Brand new characters, a lot of new and different information that we’ve barely been touched on of outside of 2 small information dumps in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which we all love because they’re different, right?

This movie was just a big set piece, setting up bigger things that should get people interested moving forward. It wasn’t all about action, more about feeding us information and getting to know new characters that we’ll be seeing more of in the future. And the future is bright, this movie doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.

A major setback in so many ways. Eternal and immortal beings who have been around defending Earth from creatures known as deviants for over 7000 years find themselves in conflict with one another and contemplating their destiny/legacy and other such things when the deviants return to attack Earth again. Directed by Chloe Zhao (hot off her Academy Award-winning run with 'Nomadland'), this is a major misstep for the MCU in a surprising amount of ways. Incoherently jumping around time period after time period throughout, a confusing narrative, thinly-developed characters, surprisingly slow pacing and development throughout, etc. Really the only compliments I can pay this film is that it looks beautiful (the cinematography is gorgeous), and it's also one of the most emotional and thought-provoking MCU entries to date, which I did appreciate at times, but it wasn't near enough to save this mess of a film. Overall, it's an alarming decline in quality in what we've come to expect in the MCU. Oh and PS, the mid-credits scene cost this film a whole star for me, that's how big of a joke it was. Expand

Similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, this is one of those Marvel properties that I had no prior knowledge of and the movie was my first foray into their story. Unlike Guardians of the Galaxy, though, it was not good.

The movie has a lot of problems and it falls under the umbrella of those flicks where the more you think about it, the worse it gets, and if you don’t think about it, it’s middling at best, as elements and players introduced by the story and trying to squeeze them in an already expansive Universe lacks well thought out writing for proper cohesion and thus it comes off as lazy and stupid. Case in point: The Celestials, the true Godly Beings that have been shown a few times before in the MCU but this is the movie where you get a proper explanation about their existence and when the plot reveals details about the Prime Celestial Arishem’s design, it’s just dumb and saps whatever interest one might have had in that part of the story and worldbuilding.

Since I have grown a bit apathetic towards this cinematic universe due to worldbuilding shenanigans that Phase 4 has shown so far, poor writing in that area alone wouldn’t have been a big issue (would still be an issue) had the characters been interesting but that turned out to be the biggest problem of this movie which stems from its own nature of being i.e there are ten Eternals, ten main new characters that are introduced in a single movie, and none of them is properly developed. As I write this review, I don’t even remember the names of many of them. On top of that, director Chloe Zao decided to have the cast give uninterested/boring and bland performances for so much of the runtime instead of being energetic and charismatic utilizing every bit of screen time they have to imbue personality to their roles. There was also lost potential of a plot point regarding Deviants, the movie just ends it in an anti-climatic fashion and throws it away.

With all that being said, I did enjoy certain things. There were some beautiful visuals, particularly with the Celestials and their gargantuan scale, especially if you don’t think about the physics of it all. Some of the fights were entertaining even with the iffy CGI, the speedster Eternal especially was portrayed how I’d wish other movies to showcase their speed type characters and you get a fun meta pseudo Superman vs Flash throwdown. Despite having thin characterization, some Eternals I did end up liking such as Druig, Gilgamesh or even Icarus, and hell I even got interested in that one Deviant since that seemed important relative to most characters in the movie. I also do applaud the director for not filling the movie to the brim with the typical Marvel brand of humour which has been getting too annoying recently and I wish strong writing was present to complement the more serious tone. Plus, the movie had both Jon Snow and Robb Stark fall in love with Sersi which I found amusing.

Overall, this is in the bottom tier of MCU movies for me. I wouldn’t say it’s the worst one, that title belongs to Black Widow for now. I don’t know how the events in Eternals will play out going forward in the MCU or whether it’ll have any impact or would be forgotten. This probably would have fared far better if it was a Disney+ series instead as that would have given it time to develop its characters at the very least even if at the loss of spectacle. Wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re an MCU fan and completionist. Anyway, if I were to rate it, I’d give it a 5/10.

Overall Eternals wasnt as bad as some of the reviews id read had led me to believe but put next to the stronger releases upto this point it definitely stands out as a messy product. The tone changes almost scene by scene and there doesnt seem to be a particular style to the direction just exposition scene after exposition scene. Not really sure i like the direction the last few marvel films have taken but this one sits firmly in the category of ok for a 'switch off enjoy then forget' experience.

It's a bit hard to swallow in terms of logic. Also, I don't think that the flashback works well in this movie. Maybe that's because they are often longer then the present sequences between them. Putting them all in sequence could have been interesting and solidified the story. The acting was very uneven. The main actress lack experience and emotional range for that movie. It was vividly apparent in contrast to some better actors. She was miscast or badly directed. It did get better at the end of the movie. Hard to understand when the secondary actors were decent enough. The FX were really good in my book and especially amazing actions scenes. I like the humour. The music was fair. I give it 65%. It was a good movie but with a wrong structure, and average actor direction. Expand

I usually do but the trailers just didn't sell me and the characters themselves I have no knowledge about it to care. Then the reviews came out and it was very negative. This was the final nail in the coffin for me. The premise is "The Eternals, a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years, reunite to battle the evil Deviants". So are the reviews correct or is this movie actually better than the reception it was given?

The most obvious praise is the visuals. MCU movies tend to be pretty dull looking for the most part. There are a few such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok where the visuals do have more impact. In Eternals, the visuals are gorgeous! A lot of the shots are incredibly vibrant and stunning. Even when it is just a shot of them standing around, it looks more picturesque than anything Marvel has done before. The CGI was also astonishingly good. The CGI of the Eternals power was great, the enemy Deviant design and CGI was great, plus the Celestials were amazing in scale and scope. Eternals also explores some interesting themes about humanity that I do like. There are also some really great action sequences in the film. The forest action sequence is memorable as it has a cool Superman-like fight scene. The final fight is also quite great too with how the abilities of the Eternals are utilised. Special praise to how they handle the Eternals, Markari, super speed power as they for once don't use slow-mo which makes it look more unique. I also think the actors do a great job. Kumail Nanjiani and Brian Tyree Henry are both a joy to watch when on-screen while getting some genuine laughs from me. Richard Madden is cool yet menacing. Lauren Ridloff despite being deaf, easily convey the right emotion for the scene. Barry Keoghan is creepy yet charming and Don Lee gives a real lovable performance.

However, there was just something off about the main lead Gemma Chan who has the most screen time. Her performance was just very wooden and dull most of the time. She has been in the MCU before in Captain Marvel (2019) and I remember her standing out a lot. So it was just kind of odd how boring her performance was in here. Although, the major reason for this could be how her character, Sersi, is written. Every other Eternal has a clear personality, views, motives and problems. Sersi just seems to love humans and has some love problems that feel very inconsequential for the most part. She is a very boring main character with the other Eternals being way more interesting than her.

On that note, this movie has too much going on. Each of the Eternals has its own problems that get brought up but immediately brushed over in a matter of seconds. For example, Phastos abandons humanity after seeing what they did with the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima, but the scene after he is completely over that! Every Eternal has an issue that could have been a whole plotline in itself that would've been more interesting than the actual plot. There is also a main deviant that starts to grow stronger, knowledgeable and more intelligent, which was a very intriguing idea. Unfortunately, the deviant is completely wasted and ends up having little to no impact on the main story whatsoever. Just there so the Eternals could have someone to punch. They could've removed this intelligent deviant and the story would still be the exact same. What a waste...

Additionally, the pacing is quite bad. There is a lot of moments throughout where the movie just slows down considerably to the point that it can feel dull. This isn't helped by the fact that this movie feels like an eternity. It is 2 hours 30 minutes but it could be cut down by 15-20 minutes and still convey the same plot. There is also an incredible amount of exposition and it can almost feel like you are getting bombarded with way too much information. Character development is also rushed. Characters will go from feeling one way about something and completely do a 180 on it in a couple of minutes. It doesn't feel natural or believable. Furthermore, there are too many characters introduced and they don't get explored or enough screen time to really resonate with any of them.

Overall, the reviews make Eternals out to be the worst MCU movie. I disagree with that as there are definitely way worst MCU movies than this. Nevertheless, it does feel like the movie crammed way too many ideas into it and did not utilize the ideas properly. Eternals (2021) could have been something amazing and unique in the MCU. Sadly the final product just ends up feeling like a complete waste of its potential. There is some genuinely great stuff in it but I do feel like the Eternals might be better suited to a Disney+ series than a movie.

TheProbably the worst MCU movie for me. Characters uninteresting. The story didn't interest me either and was a bit poorly presented here and there as it jumped around to the past and then to the present and was a bit of a goulash for me. The action wasn't bad, but there wasn't much of it, and especially it wasn't good enough to keep the film at 2 and a half hours. Like I said. The action wasn't bad, but Endgame set the bar high and this was definitely weaker than that. To sum it up. The movie itself wasn't even all that spectacular in my opinion, and when you add in the fact that this is the third Marvel movie and that the previous ones were great, this is a pretty big downer for me. I'm disappointed. The thing that scares me the most about this is that this probably isn't the only movie and there will be a second installment. Who knows? Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. But for now, I'm not looking forward to it at all and I wouldn't see it as a series. For me, a mediocre movie that I don't recommend and if anything, really only to the biggest Marvel fans. Expand

This movie was very different when comparing it to most Marvel movies, or even superhero movies for that matter. It had a vision, it had a good, solid, concept with a moral dilemma splashed among the characters and story, and it had outstanding visuals. But at the core it had some story issues, there were too many characters introduced for us to care about any of them as much as the movie wants us to, and it was just kind of a mess in terms of a consistent story, it jumped around a lot. Remember Birds of Prey how it was all over the place; because Harley Quinn was telling it and she has a screwed-up head? This movie jumped around MORE than that and there wasn't a reason for that like in Birds of Prey. Solid movie, not amazing due to the non-consistent story, but overall some great writing, core story, and just a pretty good time killer overall. Will the Eternals be as iconic as the Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy? Not in a million years. But still an enjoyable experience. Expand

I will note that I don't know a thing about Eternals, I have never heard of them prior to this movie nor had a whole lot of interest in it. However, it is a part of the MCU so it is a mandatory watch.

My biggest complaint comes at the length, it clocks in at 2 hours and 38 minutes, and this wouldn't be a bad thing if the movie was REALLY good, or was a finale to a set of movies that came before, but I didn't want to watch this movie in the theatre because I struggle with sitting down for that long so I waited until it came to Disney+ to watch it instead. The first hour or so of the movie is quite slow and focuses more on character building and its ok, but just got quite boring after a while. Things really started to pick up in the 2nd half and became much more enjoyable to watch.

The amount of characters in this movie is fine, I know there are people who complain that there is too much and I can understand that view, but I knew going into this movie that we had a big cast so I wasn't expecting a major amount of time spent on certain characters. The ones that are focused on the most are fine, the issue mostly lies with me not feeling emotionally invested in any of them. There is a villain in the movie that can absorb powers by defeating Eternals and transform like Cell or Buu from Dragon Ball Z, and I just wanted to see this guy absorb a bunch of the Eternals and keep changing forms and getting stronger, that is how little I cared about most of the characters, it isn't that I didn't like them, I just didn't feel any real emotional connection to them.

I didn't mind the plot, wasn't anything exceptional but it did the job and I like how we put a focus on basically the first superheroes related to mankind. Some of the motivations of certain characters does bounce around a little bit too much, some decisions they make made me scratch my head like one not agreeing to help the Eternals so he can be with his family, despite the fact that the world would end and he would lose his family if they failed... very odd sometimes.

The look of the movie is gorgeous, the CGI is awesome to look at and the combat when tied in with this is awesome to watch.

I can see why there may be a divide in the movie, this may not be for everybody but I think its worth a watch, especially if you are following the MCU, though I don't think it is one I need to watch again.

There's sloppy writing sprinkled throughout, actual character development is rushed to nonexistent, villains are killed off shortly after being introduced, and there are ugly CG bad guys but that can describe the majority of the MCU.

The CG fights aren't just a big messy blob, seeing how the characters interacted and influenced different civilizations throughout the ages was enjoyable and I would have liked more of that, finally getting into the meat of the cosmic side of Marvel with the Celestials and power cosmic is great, and how everyone's different powers were utilized was fun but they should have had more combos/synergy seeing how long they've been fighting together.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is the very definition of mediocre. It is not as bad, as some people make it and it is not as good as others make it. At the end it is watchable, but a bland experience, like stale bread. A few points in no particular order:

The visual effects are 2/3 gorgeous and 1/3 really bad and boring. The deviants are very generic, the whole vulcano part looks artificial, I don't buy the costumes and I find it kinda hilarious that they wear exactly the same stuff for thousands of years. That's quality! The ship looks way to small on screen, most of the time I have the feeling you couldn't even stand in it.

There is too much going on. To many characters, to many topics, to many locations, to many ideas... most of that stuff is not explored while the themes in itself like love, betrayal, not aging, one existing world vs. thousands to be born, are good! All of that could actually be really interesting, but there is no time to develop any of it. The result is, when people start dying I simply don't care, I had no time to get to know these characters. The Avengers worked because we had time to bond with these characters in their solo movies.

Some of the logic of the movie seems plain wrong. The Eternals should be really powerful, Thanos level powerful actually, yet they feel really weak. One determined Avenger could probably take down most of them and one of the Avengers power houses would mop the floor with this flying dude (sorry, still can't remember most of the names). There are very few deviants, I don't really get the threat. I don't think 10 deviants could take down millions of dinosaurs. Why is there an "alpha deviant"? There is no explanation for that. If they are space robots designed for a purpose, why are most of the designs so weak? Wouldn't it make more sense to just create 10 flying dudes with laser eyes? The movie "explains", why the Eternals didn't interfere with Thanos and Ultron, but there is no logic behind it. These events where a threat to their mission, so they should have interfered. I also don't get why no other character shows up, at least when the action is over. A giant statue coming out of the ocean should interest someone. Most actors are wasted, especially Kid Harrington and Salma Hayek. I was really hoping for the Black Knight to be in this. The movie has no villain. The deviants are more like a distraction or wild beasts without any real agenda. The betrayal part is weak and boring, I wasn't shocked by it, kinda saw it coming. Marvels Eternals is essentially a movie without an antagonist and that simply does not make for interesting story telling. The climax was like preventing an earth quake and it had no gravity to it, there was no sense of urgency or threat, it didn't feel like a final stand to save humanity.

So, all in all, I found the movie a rather boring experience. I checked my phone so much while watching it, I actually had to rewind a few times to catch what's going on.

It was a mess the story felt like dragging,
the starting bit and ending bit was engaging but in between it felt like stopped felt like couldn't get pass half a movie
the action and VFX were awesome, music was good and the Overall idea of eternals and there story in earth felt amazing but executed poorly as they are new characters james gunn did it way better with GOTG then this,
the mcu's connection too felt like conditional although the post-credits were mind-blowing.
the different cultures and time-periods were amazingly showcased,
the characters felt little dull although the kit-harrington's and karun's character were amazing to watch rest were average. This movie has more explicit things then any other mcu although rated pg13 the sex scene felt little extra. the starting GOT reunion of kit and ikarus was awesome, the whole relationship aspects in the movie like the sprite loving ikarus and others they haven't had impact on us and the whole celestial's threat was like it'll get pass although the ending was engaging after ikarus twist. the postcredits specially the star-fox one was awesome and the kit-harrington's was amazing,Overall the whole movie felt soul-less and it was hard to watch halfway through it felt dragged still A onetime watch for continuing MCU's Journey!

In addition, there are dialogues that make others feel ashamed and the same "glorious" juxtaposition of the Eternals over and over again. On the way to its goal, the film lost me again and again, despite being a bit interesting, and that's never a good sign because I pull through most films..... I actually found the credit scenes the best and gave an interesting outlook into the future of the MCU (some things also make you think).I debated whether I thought it was worse, a little better, or just as bad as Thor 2 and settled on a tie: 2/5 gold orbs.

- Deviants feel useless.
- The Eternals being responsible for humankind's accomplishments is kinda lame.

Honestly, this could've been an awesome Disney+ show.

Plot: 6

The twenty-sixth instalment of Marvel Cinematic Universe features another group of superheroes called Eternals which is not only very much unknown superheroes but even lesser known heroes than Black Panther, Ant-Man and even Shang-Chi. Originally slated for release at the end of 2020, the movie was delayed until now due to COVID-19 pandemic where theatres all over the world were closed.

A long time ago, a group of an extraterrestrial superpowered race called Eternals which consists of Ajak (played by Salma Hayek), Sersi (Chan), Ikaris (Madden), Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh, and Thena (Jolie) were sent to Earth by the Celestial Arishem to exterminate a monstrous extraterrestrial race called Deviants from wiping all life forms in the universe. Once they wiped out the Deviants, the Eternals went their separate ways and lived among humanity for many years.

In the present day and after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sersi and Sprite are living in London and the former is currently in a relationship with her human boyfriend, Dane Whitman (played by Kit Harrington). They are attack by a Deviant called Kro until Ikaris show up and save them but Kro escape. Realising that the Deviants have return, they travel to South Dakota to meet up with Ajak but she was already killed by Kro when they arrive. With the death of Ajak, the Eternals have to gather the others who are living in other countries to fight against the returning Deviants.

For the first time ever, I find this movie not so good like the other past movies. Normally, MCU movies are all great and even the weaker ones like 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World are enjoyable to watch but this one I don’t find it enjoyable. For one, the main characters are less interesting because there are too many characters in the main role which leave very little room for character developements for each of them. Salma Hayek’s role was underutilised as she was killed off early. It was a total waste for her to be this role. I was also disappointed that Kumail Nanjani who played Kingo did not participate in the final act. Despite this, the casts still give their best performance especially Lauren Ridloff who does not any lines and she relied on sign language which she does a great job.

The pacing in this movie is also bad as the movie keep switching from current events and flashbacks back and forth to the point I find it hard to follow. Combined with 157 minutes runtime and the lack of character developments, this movie is really boring at the end of the day. While the movie still have funny, heartwarming moments, great special effects and direction from Chloe Zhao, they are not enough to save the movie. I felt that Eternals would be better of as a Disney+ series at best or at least, start off as a series first before having a movie. As part of the tradition of the franchise, stay back for mid credits scene and post credits scene.

And don't get me wrong, I'm all about representation, but we all know Marvel and every company in the world get into it just to don't look bad. As for the structure, 'Eternals' plays in the same ballpark as every other MCU film: a bunch of dudes dressed like Power Rangers fighting the bad guy to save the world. Oh, and for the bad guy I mean the deviant monster that had no purpose at all. Chloé Zhoe may have tried to add some depth to the characters, especially with all that about belonging and growing up, but nothing we haven't seen before in a superhero movie.

And, worst of all, this is two and a half hours long! There was no justification for it.

The result is a mixed big, one that has many strong points as well as a number of not-so-strong points. To its credit, the film's special effects are quite eye-popping, as is the cinematography featuring images shot (or simulated) from around the world. The picture also features a narrative that refreshingly attempts to break the mold typical of most Marvel Universe releases, incorporating greater degrees of relationship development and genuinely funny comic relief than is often found in these movies. However, the complicated story line is not always fleshed out as coherently as it could be, a problem compounded by uneven character development, assumptions about viewer foreknowledge of the material and a chronic need for editing many sequences that sag in between the good parts. In all, "Eternals" feels very much like a typical Chloe Zhao movie but with a bigger budget -- and one in which her weaknesses as a filmmaker come across more noticeably than in her typical fare. It's apparent from this picture that Ms. Zhao is still developing as a director -- and should be recognized as such instead of given the blank check of accolades often accorded her. Expand

Feels like no lessons were learned or character development was made. And for something as huge as the Celestials and Eternals are, the stakes just aren’t there and there’s no real weight to anything. The first act is a drag and gets repetitive when introducing the characters. Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo is the only one that stood out to me, not cause he’s the comic relief, but because he seemed to be the only one there with any life to their performance. The re-emergence of the creatures’ in current times brings them back together, but not before several flashbacks for backstory. This impressive cast manages to pull off the performances with conviction and director Chloé Zhao has allowed them plenty of room for interactions. There are also some beautiful visuals. However, all of this drama comes at a price: pace. Even though there are decent action scenes peppered thru the plot, these slow moments get a bit tiresome, esp. at a 2:37 run time. This iteration is notable for several hero firsts, including one who's openly-gay (with a kiss), a hearing-impaired woman and several who are not Caucasian.
NOTE: As usual with Marvel, stay thru the title credits for a surprise new character and thru the final credits for a mysterious teaser.

It's disheartening. The cinematography is as amazing as the trailers made it seem but after a while the way the eternals's powers are animated becomes underwhelming. Ikaris's charater is bland. Gilgamesh, athena&ajax are forgettable. It's difficult to connect to them and believe that they've known eachother fot thousands of years. This applies to sersi's holllow but allegedly epic love story for the ages. Chemistry is not their and it strips key scenes of their desired impact. This movie would've benefited from less exposition and more fleshing out. They attempt to cover so much ground that nothing is done by the end. Kit Harrington's character is an after thought and many scenes you saw in the trailer won't appear. Angelina Jole is a shell of herself in this role. Her scenes perfect for if you want to use the bathroom and don't want to miss anything intresting. Another issue is motivations, for people who care so deeply about the human race they seem pretty detached to it. Sprite's character is a frustrating example of incompetence. Their arc made no sense and they didn't even attempt to justify it. But worst of all is the deviants. Kros is wasted potential. Where they could've explored themes of oppression and evolution they provided a throw away side villain. I wanted more from their beyond "im powerful, hungry &vengeful ". Just as we begin to learn more it's cut short in a dissatifying death. The cameras relevance is non-sensical humour kingo could've pulled of alone alongside phastos.

With that said the hate and critical panning is unwarranted(at least to that extent). There's alot of good stuff here . The directing is a higlight as well as the 1st deaf superhero Makkari. If it focused more on her i would've been very satisfied. Her signing dialogue was nice representation and her speed is portrayed the best out of every version of that power on television (expect quicksilver). Druig becomes a predictable fan favourite for the right reasons,he's wonderful. His character feels real and believable. Even whom he chooses to love makes sense. Phastos is handled well enough delivering the right amount of comedic relief. The celestials are a phenomenal sight and are given enough nuance &grandeur to be respected. Sersi's powers are so fascinating to witness. Kingo's confusing narrative injects humanity to the grey movie. I think it will be appreciated more in retrospect mostly for the risk it too more than the quality of the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a mess of a movie! The pacing is WAYYY off. And who was the genius who had the idea to introduce more than 6 main characters, and make the less charismatic one be the protagonist? I don't even remember half the name of the characters....there wasn't enough time to properly flesh them out. The visual quality was astonishing, I have to give them credit for that! but that is pretty much all I can praise the movie for(except Kingo and Theena). The "side villain", if you can call it that, was disappointing. They tried to flesh out the villain, give it proper motivation and heck....they even made it interesting...but they had to make it into a plot device/punching bag. what I'm about to say next is just my subjective opinion(and I could be totally wrong, I'm not educated enough in economy to make a statement): Disney pumped this movie out, instead of making a Disney+ show to make more money. Since they probably get less money trough their service yearly than a movie that takes a couple of months to film Expand

Eternals is a better movie than I expected, given that 3 post-Endgame MCU films released in a row (Spiderman: Far From Home, Black Widow and Shang-Chi) were of average quality.

Eternals is a film about 10 super-powered beings on a mission to help humanity on planet Earth. The director makes an admirable job of introducing these 10 heroes (plus another one) without making a mess out of it, focusing on just 2-3 main characters. Even Jolie's Thena character gets sidelined for most of the duration.

The plot has some actual drama and connections with real-world events, grounding the story and making these beings relatable to humans. Names such as Ikaris, Gilgamesh, Thena, Sersi, they are all clear references to deities and mythical characters from all over the world.

The problem with this film is that there is some potential that's never fullfilled. No actor manages to steal the show like Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark or Chris Hemsworth as Thor. And the overall plot fails to become anything more than another "save the world" kind of story. Even though there is a spaceship and lots of banter between the various characters, this is no Guardians of the Galaxy, and I doubt Eternals can become a film franchise on the same level of Guardians of the Galaxy. But it's still a watchable movie. Unlike Shang-Chi, I'm curious about the future of Eternals.

Eternals is a movie that, simply put, tries to do EVERYTHING at once. It tries to emulate the familiar hallmarks of the MCU, while simultaneously juggling ten new heroes, endless historical flashbacks, plus themes and discussions that were (supposedly) going to be the film's bread and butter.

This ultimately results in one of the longest MCU runtimes ever, with lightning fast pacing that contrasts heavily with Marvel's usual approach. The pacing and density of Eternals honestly feels more at home with Batman vs Superman than anything made by Marvel. Don't expect a scenic tour, because you'll be catapulted from character to character, and twist to twist, often to the film's detriment.

I tried to love the cast of Eternals, but there was simply not enough screentime to go around. While some members, namely Sersi, Ikaris, and Kingo get solid characterisation, other characters feel wholly superficial and tacked on. The biggest offenders here are Gilgamesh, who is unceremoniously killed halfway through the film, Ajax, who essentially only exists as an exposition vehicle, and Thena, who's arc directly cheapens the film's villains.

These disparities in development aren't helped by the film's unconventional format. Previous MCU team movies focused on gradually building smaller teams, but Eternals does the opposite, starting off with the team "assembled" and then rediscovering each member, one by one, in the modern day. This means that some Eternals (namely Makkari and Phastos), are reintroduced >66% of the way through, and a general lack of character development plagues the film as a whole.

That said, the film's performances are solid. Richard Madden and Gemma Chan give solid performances as ideologically opposed  leaders of the Eternals, and Kumail Nanjiani is excellent as Kingo, by far the movie's funniest character. Kit Harrington is also great as Sersi's out-of-his-depth love interest, and overall, the film's performances are one of the strongest aspects overall.

Another notable strength Zhao delivers is the film's cinematography, which is easily a contender for the best in the MCU. The film delivers stunning shots from start to finish, and in particular, the scene in which Sersi  learns the truth from Arishem already ranks as one of my favourite scenes, visually, in the entire MCU, with a great sense of scale and gravity.

Even better, this visual prowess translates to the film's action sequences, which are sleek, well-choreographed, and weighty. Makkari's speedster antics, in particular, are amongst the best I've seen in live-action (far better than the MCU's Quicksilver), showcasing none of the tropes that often plague such scenes. Overall, Eternals continues the trend of Marvel delivering solid, exhilarating action.

However, while the fights themselves are great, the CGI deviants being fought against were far less well executed. Towards the climax of the movie, we learn that the deviants were actually failed creations of Arishem, with the Eternals having nearly completely culled their species. Furthermore, an intelligent deviant, capable of vocalising this struggle, emerges. With these concerns being voiced to individuals who are supposed to be benevolent protectors of humanity, what exactly does the film do with this interesting moral revelation? The answer is, unfortunately, absolutely nothing. The head deviant runs off, only to be killed in a mindless fight scene at the film's climax: fodder for Thena's redemption arc. The deviants are almost entirely two-dimensional and wasted as villains, and only serve to further bloat the film's runtime.

Furthermore, the film's deeper themes often leave me... frustrated. One central discussion is the debate of love vs duty, with the Eternals struggling between their intended purpose, and their love for humanity that has grown over millenia. Some are ultimately willing to sacrifice billions of humans for trillions of future lives, or are unable to oppose Arishem, their godlike creator. These ideas are occasionally capitalised on well, such as  Kingo's refusal to take sides, but less effective examples also exist, such as Sprite's betrayal of Sersi being woefully underdeveloped for something so central to the plot. Overall, the film's deeper themes are executed decently, but are once again hampered by the bloated runtime.

In conclusion, despite possessing some notable strengths and a solid entertainment factor, Eternals is a film that simply doesn't have enough time to fully capitalise on its ambitions, and would've benefited from fewer characters and plot threads overall. Wedged between Zhao and Marvel's signature styles, Eternals reaches the full potential of neither.

The visuals were stunning and it had some fun parts, BUT this movie was slow and stupid. The movie really picks up in the last 30 mins, which means that 90% of this movie is pointless. 3 hours is too long, it's clear that they didn't understand how to tell a concise and compelling story. This movie needed stronger editing, and a director at the helm that has done big, box office action movies. The constant jumping back and forth, to various times and storylines is distracting at best, and annoying at worst. There are major plot holes, and such bad CGI issues, and just sub-par acting. This group of actors don't seem like they enjoyed being on screen together. Kumal is there for forced comedic relief and they can't even get that right in most cases. This is a big miss for Marvel. Wait for this to come to Disney+ but save yourself the 3 hours at the theatre. They are just spending it setting up the next film, and world-building. You have no emotional connection to the characters and so you don't really care what happens to them. The positive reviews are either people spamming one letter "Aaaaaa" or clearly from Marvel fanboys who didn't see the film. I was pretty disappointed by this film considering the budget, the hype, and the fact that they wanted to hinge Phase 4 on this new team. I can't understand how fans of the MCU could like this. The movie felt like it thought its audience was dumb and just spent too much time trying to explain this massive background and world-building they kept beating over our head. It was very anticlimactic in the final fight, the powers are a bit boring as well, and I don't see how they will mix The Eternals into the MCU (and maybe they shouldn't because this clearly didn't land). Till the first half of the movie, the movie was good, didnt really reming me of a marvel movie that much, but it had a nice built story, but after the second half, the movie was pure bad, plot twists all the time, the final battle was not expected to turn out like that and more. Long story short, after the second half the movie felt rushed like a rushed school project. Expand

I appreciated that they attempted to tell a less conventional story and weren't afraid to get into denser themes, but this movie really needed to be two movies or a Disney plus series. I loved the cosmic marvel elements, the sense of scale, and it looked / sounded beautiful. There were even a handful of good scenes between the characters and glimpses of good character development, but it happened across so many characters that none of it really stuck. Also, the third act really failed to do anything genuinely epic - it just felt like it was there out of necessity. The movie was entertaining and none of it was just terrible, but it felt like it needed some more planning and clear direction focused on specific characters. Expand

Which is why it's disappointing that its most uniqueIf the somewhat lukewarm reception to the latest Thor and Doctor Strange is anything to go by, even the average moviegoer is beginning to feel the effects of franchise fatigue with the MCU. Which is why it's disappointing that its most unique outing that breaks away from the mold in a lot of ways might very well be it's worst effort to date. Eternals experiments with a new tone and style, but forgets to make any of it interesting outside of its admittedly enticing ending.

The film introduces a new team of heroes who are basically a melancholy and boring version of the Avengers, or perhaps more accurately the Justice League considering one of the characters is literally just Marvel's Superman. The writers did their best to try and make them deeper and more complex than the rest of their peers by placing a strong emphasis on their struggle with their complicated origin and purpose. Unfortunately nobody onscreen comes off as anything greater than a basic motivation and a goal, while never undergoing any significant development or growth either. So it all feels like a bunch of unjustified melodrama at the end of the day, akin to what Zack Snyder gave us when he kicked off the DCEU.

It also doesn't help that they're an unlikable bunch. Few times before has an assemblage of such recognizable and usually reliable names been this uncharismatic. On top of being as dull as dishwasher, the fact that the higher powered ones all bear secret resentments towards one another to the point where they anxiously await an opportunity to "clip each other's wings" makes them seem petty and hateful. It's an old trope in these type of group movies that's never made anyone in them endearing.

Then there's the story and adventure themselves to consider, which lack excitement to boot. Kumail Nanjiani does his darndest to inject some life into the mix, but the script is working against him at every turn with bland action sequences and largely humourless attempts at comedy. Things do pick up some steam in the final act however. It's legitimately fun watching these guys and gals beat the crap out of each other thanks to their neat powers, and the shocking cliffhanger conclusion honestly had my jaw on the floor. Paired with the compelling post-credit stingers I became cautiously intrigued with the future of these heroes despite not enjoying the majority of what came beforehand.

Ultimately, it gets some points for pulling something out of its butt right there at the end to actually leave me awaiting a sequel. Although, that follow-up is going to need to improve on a lot. On top of the stuff I already mentioned, this narrative only serves to highlight how the MCU has the most convoluted and perplexing lore of any cinematic property possibly ever. Featuring more cosmic threats, entities, organizations, races, dimensions, and gods than the entire Cthulhu mythos. I will say the additions to it here do turn out to be fascinating and have immense potential moving forward if handled correctly. This was sadly just a very poor introduction to this portion of the universe that hopefully the later installments will be able to overcome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the opening fight scene, I cringed.....the diversity box ticking was so ham fisted. Then the Eternal super being who should be the embodiment of perfection started using sign language and I just about shut the whole thing off. Why would this Celestial creation be mute and forced to use sign language? It is simply checking off boxes and it really is disgusting that Hollywood is essentially killing itself by attacking what should be an artform. Yes, film is art. When filmmakers feel the need or are forced to make their characters a certain way in order to appease, that is the antithesis of art. That's what happens in authoritarian societies. It is the antithesis of free expression. However, I moved past it once I started to get to know the characters a bit.

There are a lot of characters and frankly, we don't get to know them as well as we probably should. They are ancient beings and yet they mostly behave like 30 year old adults. It's just too broad of a scope; too many characters to try to get to know. I liked Ikaris, Kingo, and Druig the most. Of course, Ikaris has to be the villain because he is a masculine straight white male; another laughable and predictable trope from modern Hollywood. What's funny is that since the only group in our culture that can be made to look bad is white dudes, by making them the villains in films, they are the only ones who get real characterization. I was rooting for Ikaris to win because he was one of the only ones that felt like a real character and had a weight to him that felt like he could be 7,000 years old. Whereas Sersi, who we also spend a lot of time with, is kind of a piece of cardboard and feels very thinly developed. There are a few saving graces to the film and Ikaris is one of them. I also love the Celestials and the story that revolves around them. The plot and the moral questions it asks are solid.

Ultimately, it is a very long run time, box checking, and a convoluted script that needs tightening that really hurt this film. I could nitpick about little things like the way they speak but I personally don't get bogged down by stuff like that. One major flaw in the film is how the Prime Celestial, Arishem, reveals to Sersi what his plans are. He TOTALLY red pills the hell out of her for no reason. The details of the Eternal's mission have been secret for thousands of years because why? Arishem keeps them in the dark because he probably knows that if they fin dout what they are doing, they will rebel. Yet, he just tells Sersi everything right at the last moment. The script should have had a much more clever way to reveal what their actual mission was because Arishem just telling them felt super lazy.

Overall, I love the film's aesthetic; the art direction is superb. For a sci fi (which is essentially what this movie is), visuals go a long way in keeping me entertained. But it needed more......the characters needed more. Paradoxically, it also needed less. I probably will never come back and watch this film again so is it a 5 or 6/10? Somewhere in there.

I was absolutely pumped for this film considering it’s director had a terrific track record, It had a talented and diverse cast, And boy did it look ambitious as hell. First the positives: The visuals were f*cking incredible and jaw-dropping, The first act was pretty good, The performances were terrific, The action was cool, And the MCU humor was still funny. But unfortunately, Now we have to get to my issues with the film. The second and third acts of the film are very confusing and crazy, The writing wasn’t very good, The characters are kinda forgettable, The film is excruciatingly long, And is kinda boring at times. Overall, While definitely not a bad film, Eternals is a so-so disappointment and is tied with Thor: The Dark World as the worst MCU film to date.

No. Is it a film that breaks the boundaries of a Marvel film? Also no. Eternals is in this weird limbo where there is a lot of stuff I like but for everything I liked, there was something I didn’t like. The film’s visuals and directing are honestly some of the best in the series. The environments and shots look consistently great. Sometimes there is the awkward visual effect but that’s expected at this point in Marvel. The music is pretty good at points but very forgettable at others which sucks because the good pieces are really gold but the bad pieces are really bad. Half of these characters I found interesting (Sersi, Ikaris, Sprite, Gilgamesh, and Druig) while the other half I found to be boring and uninteresting. Chloé Zhao is a great director but I’m not a big fan of her writing. I feel the same way about her previous film Nomadland. There is a lot of exposition that can be interesting sometimes when combined with the pretty visuals but also really boring. Sometimes they prioritize the exposition over character work which is one of the reasons I found some of these characters to be uninteresting. The action is this way as well where it can be really fun and different sometimes but other times it does nothing to stand out from other Marvel films. I am glad Marvel tried to do something much different. I truly am but it definitely could have been done better. I really hope the negative critical reception doesn’t disuade Marvel from making something different in the future. I would really only recommend this if you are big into Marvel movies. Expand

Also, why do you have to tell me two days after the movie came out that it was Blade talking to Whitman? Just because people recognized Ali's voice? But then it wasn't worth taking a simple stunt to make him do that scene. Which is not even a scene. Ali doesn't even appear, it's just five seconds off-screen. Otherwise, Ikaris is the ugly version of Patriot and Arishem seems morally correct Thanos. The plot is saved, but it's too little. Expand
