There is nothing next gen about it, there is no innovation. No, it even lacks the things that always made Bethesda RPGs so special, as the exploration and secret wonders to discover are greatly reduced in comparison to older Bethesda titles. It can absolutely be fun and addictive but has so many flaws and unfulfilled potential, that it essentially becomes both, fun and disappointing in equal measures, when it’s fun it’s an 8 and when it’s clunky and boring it’s a 5 so I can sadly only give it a 7, especially since performance even on my PC is really bad for a last gen looking title. It would even be bad if it looked like a next gen title, which it never does. Expand

This game is consuming my life. It's the most fun I've had in any Bethesda game and I lose track of how long I've been playing it.
Also, some of the best side missions in any game I've played that take unexpected turns.
There are also so many interactions with NPCs that aren't even quests, like the boy on Mars who says his mom is always sad and if you wait until night and the mom comes

22 hours in and I have to doff my cap to Bethesda.

Being a massive Fallot and Skyrim fan expectations for Starfield were obviously high but Bethesda have delivered and then some.

Tons of quests, ship building, space exploration and more, the only downside is not enough hours in the day to play, but obviously that's not the devs fault.

9/10 in my opinion. I've been eagerly awaiting Starfield since it was first announced, and have been playing since it went live on Game Pass. It has been a long while since a game has sucked me in from the beginning, to the point that I lose track of time and have to set an alarm to keep from playing past the point of reason. But Starfield is that game. An especial feature that I feel9/10 in my opinion. It has been a long while since a game has sucked me in from the beginning, to the point that I lose track of time and have to set an alarm to keep from playing past the point of reason. But Starfield is that game. An especial feature that I feel needs extra attention is that while my poor, well-loved Xbox One could never play this if it was installed, I can play on the cloud streaming service without any issues at all beyond the occasional pixelization and input lag.

    Pros:

    Immediately engrossing story and setting
    Fantastic and believable worldbuilding
    Interesting characters
Ridiculously complex ship and outpost building mechanics
    Enjoyable ship combat
Fun and vastly improved foot combat
    Addictive system and planetary exploration
Truly impressive visuals even compressed and truncated for streaming and back-compatibility
The game is almost exactly as described; virtually every feature highlighted by BGS in promotional is present and works as described, with very little over-promised or misportrayed.

    Cons:

The map system needs refinement; local maps are not helpful
The tutorial system needs expansion and rework; many of the most useful and immersive elements are not mentioned at all, many systems are not explained properly, nor are the tutorials particularly well-written or integrated well

A real shame, especially when it comes to flying the spaceship because they look great, the personalisation and interiors are cool, and the fighting is fun. But that's limited to the emptiness of space.

A lot of mechanics in the game are also pointless and retract from the experience. The main one being O2/CO2 levels where you can't even run for more than 10 seconds without getting health damage. What's the point of that? That's not fun for anyone.

Graphically it's a nice game, and there was clearly a lot of time and effort put into the design of objects and the world in general. But the stale gameplay, constant load screens & menus - just don't make it worth it.

Starfield is a massive open-world space RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It has been in development for over 10 years and has been met with high expectations. However, after playing the game for over 50 hours, I am left feeling disappointed.

The game's biggest strength is its exploration. There are over 100 star systems to explore, each with its own planets, moons, and space stations. There is a lot to see and do in this vast galaxy, and I found myself getting lost in the exploration for hours at a time.

However, the game's exploration is also its biggest weakness. The planets are all procedurally generated, which means that they can feel samey and repetitive. There is also a lack of variety in the wildlife and the environment.

The game's combat is also underwhelming. It is serviceable, but it is not very engaging. The weapons feel weak and the enemies are not very challenging.

The game's story is also a letdown. It is predictable and uninspired. The characters are also one-dimensional and forgettable.

Overall, Starfield is a disappointment. It is a vast and ambitious game, but it is held back by its technical flaws and its lack of polish. I would only recommend this game to fans of Bethesda games who are willing to overlook its shortcomings.

Here are some specific criticisms of the game:

The game is buggy and unstable. I encountered several bugs during my playthrough, including quests that would not progress and enemies that would not spawn.
The game is poorly optimized. The frame rate can be choppy, even on high-end PCs.
The game's UI is clunky and unintuitive. It can be difficult to find what you are looking for.
The game's dialogue is wooden and unnatural. The characters often say things that do not make sense.
The game's quests are repetitive and uninspired. There are not many memorable quests in the game.
I am sure that some people will enjoy Starfield, but I believe that it is a flawed game that does not live up to its potential. I hope that Bethesda will address the game's shortcomings in future updates.
    A 5/10 from me.

The game is fine, it's ambitious and has potential but executed poorly, gun play is very generic and highly repetitive. If you don't have patience, getting through, say, the first 12 or so hours will be tough, which isn't great considering the main campaign is only 15 hours. Side quests are probably the more enjoyable side of things, but without a good main story, it feels disjointed.

Best quality are the ships and space combat, I agree that is kinda fun, especially ship customisation, which again is something you'll have to wade through a lot of low-grade content to get to the ships much later in game.

Xbox needed a "Messiah" to save them, unfortunately Starfield arrived instead.

Gameplay wise it plays good enough but the fact it's so boring and I really needed to force myself to pick the game up again and again makes this game a mongo for me. And I know people say it gets better after 12+ hour or after bearing the game the game truly starts but that's crazy, a game needs to get its claws in me from the start and pull me back in over and over again and makes want to come back. Unfortunately starfield isn't that and I hate to say this because I had high hopes

    Update

After trying again and giving it a couple extra hours the game gets significantly better. Still what I said before still stand and its far from a game of the generation but it is a good game to waste some time and be entertained

Starfield, a game 25 years in the making. A game made in a 25 year old engine is more likely what Todd wanted to convey. A game made in a 25 year old engine is more likely what Todd wanted to convey. Anyone remotely interested in the game has probably seen the trailers and/or heard of the state the game was on launch day. And that's just about how much I know about the game. Because I wasn't allowed to play the game by Microsoft. "Your graphics card does not meet the minimal requirements" is the message I get when I try to open the game. On an RTX 3060. Sure, with how badly optimized the game is, my card will probably do 1080p Low 30fps. A subpar experience for sure, but that's no reason to lock a consumer out of the game right? there's people playing it on integrated GPUs on youtube. So my GPU is 100% not at fault. So what's happening here is an intentional denial of service by Microsoft because I haven't updated my Windows.

Starfield is BGS' most optimized game on launch day yet. Quite the record. And I find that only lasts the players 12-20 hours before the cracks show up in the form of game breaking bugs that ruin hours of progress because an NPC noclipped into space or something of the sort. Remember, that's 12-20 hours where a sizable chunk of your gameplay is running around and watching cutscenes for transitions between planet and space. The physics in this game however is quite the achievement, for BGS. A fraction of the object physics you can smoothly simulate in SF would crash the most community patched version of Skyrim. But then why do we see clips of spaceships spinning like a top in space for no reason? Microsoft was directing a ton of resources into the QC of this game, so the testing done for this game prior to launch probably had the greatest effort put into it in the history of Bethesda Games itself. And yet like a dozen of the initial hours of the game is all they were able to get right.

I only recently got to play FarCry5 and I realized, that game has a better system for facial expressions than SF. Facial expressions was one of the highlights of the game back when SF was just teased. Every aspect of this game makes it look like it's a decade old. A very fitting era for this game because around this time, Call of Duty Ghosts also locked players out of games for not having 6 GB RAM minimum. That got "cracked" real quick. Whether this will be as well remains to be seen. I for one have removed this from my storage. Good thing I didn't have to pay for this blueballing. But I've found on reddit others who weren't as lucky, and bought the premium version of the game. Thankfully I learned my lesson with beth games a long time ago.

Ignore all the fake reviews from PlayStation fanboys, this is an enjoyable game and comparatively quite stable for a newly released Bethesda game.

One downside is having no vehicles for planet exploration, which I hope Bethesda can add in a future update. In saying that, fast travel is quite easy for already explored locations so this is only problematic for newly discovered planets.

Not gonna sugar coat it as i'm not obligated to do that. There are some weird choices, and quality of life features that are missing from an RPG released in 2023. But at its core is still a rock solid first person RPG with a very detailed game world that is huge, and provides a lot of player choice and freedom. If you're looking for a space sim, look else where, there are plenty of options (No Man's Sky, and Elite Dangerous are the best ones), but if you're looking for an open world sci-fi RPG, you can't do much better than this, except maybe Cyberpunk 2077, and the Outer Worlds. Also, graphics look dated as frick unless you remove green filter (it makes all textures look flat) had to download a mod for that as well.
Overall some parts of the game are cool, but some are extremely lazy. It feels unfinished and unpolished.

    Cons:
    * Outdated engine. Loading screens everywhere. 2D grass and trees. Aww come on!
    * UI on PC is a nightmare. Luckily there are some mods that make UI experience more streamlined, but really, 7 years of development and you just make a dump on PC players?
    * Writing is mostly dull and uninspiring. Like an AI would write all dialogues and quests. Feels soulless and boring with some notable exceptions.
    * Characters so far are very forgettable and bland. Can't compare with Baldur's Gate 3 at all. Please hire new writers.
    * Exploration is kind a fake. Game just renders small map around you with locations of interest, but the problem is - its bloody repeating. You will run into the same scientific center, same caves, same buildings over and over again on different planets. Its ridiculous how boring it is.
    * Space exploration is also fake. You will spend most of your time in the menu clicking fast travel icons, thats all.
    * Dialogues, quests so far are very bland, go there, kill a pirate, yay, collect loot. Repeat.
    * Choices and consequences? What consequences lol? Most of dialogue options are meaningless. There's no moral dilemma, no hard choices, you just join all the factions at once and do their quests without a bat of the eye, be a pirate and anti pirate at the same time, nobody cares.
    * Cities feel fake. Main city - the New Atlantis feels just like Mass Effect's city - the Citadel (2007 game). NPCs are just standing around or randomly walking from point A to B...then disappearing. Its not believable. Nobody is eating, drinking coffee or acting like real people, there are no flying cars around, its just lifeless. Even Cyberpunk's Night city feels alive compared to Starfield city life.
    * Space combat is just terrible. Maybe I need to invest more skill points, but now its just awful.
    * Enemies are bullet sponges and there's no kill cam. Really? Will you make us pay for that?
    * AI is quite terrible. It gets stuck everywhere and just gliches out.
    * There could be more interesting random encounters and unique bosses & enemies.
    * Universe should feel more alive. Now it feels fake. In Skyrim at least there were NPCs with full day routines, some even traveling between cities. Not in Starfield.
    * Your first romanceable character is a 50 years old women with any lack of unique personality.

    Pros:
    * Music
    * Ship building
    * I am a sucker for sci-fi space games
    * Crazy modding community - ready to save the game from day one

Overall game feels dated and bland. Bethesda uses the same old engine adnd same old uninspiring approach to game development as before.
I can recommend this game only if you get a massive discount. I paid premium price for it, of course I am not happy.

While I still probably will play it and enjoy modding community's offerings, I still will set it to "not recommended", because I want Bethesda to hear us out and make TES 6 to be greater than anything made before.
If fanboys and normies keep buying 10 different versions of Starfield, Starfield Enhanced version, Starfield Ultimate, Anniversary edition etc. without ANY complaints - Bethesda will make TES 6 using the same old engine and same old commercial, soulless approach, you will see.

The perk system is new but I think it’s really nice and interesting. Anyway the game is great so give it a try if you can especially if you have gamepass. If not I bought this for $70 and I am happy with the purchase. This game might not be for everyone because it’s a specific genre but if you’re interested then try it. Expand

This game is incredible. I went in skeptical, and I feel like a fool. It has the odd bug and graphically it looks a generation or two behind sometimes. But as a game? This is spectacular. But I'm a believer that if a game can hit a near-constant 30fps, it's really not that bad at all. Starfield and RDR2 are two of the finest examples of 30fps actually being 30fps and thus being entirely playable. I would rather a game be locked at 30fps than it advertise itself as a 60fps game only for it to constantly fluctuate between 30-60fps, especially in moments of action.

This game is a testament to what gaming could be. And, IMO, it may be Bethesda's best game ever. The scale, the story, the world-building, the characters., the depth. It's an experience. This made me feel things that an RPG hasn't made me feel in years outside of my first time playing Oblivion, New Vegas, and maybe The Witcher 3. It's special.

This launching on Game Pass is insane and appreciated. I will undoubtedly be purchasing it, in full, soon for another playthrough in the future. I genuinely have no complaints that aren't just nitpicks. When I was 7 hours into this game, I hadn't even started the first actual full-on main story mission the game presents you with. I fully expect my hours in this game to come close to, if not exceed, triple digits. And I welcome it.

Around 70 hours in the game, Bethesda's new IP Starfield, is a good game with some cons that can't be left unnoticed.

As usual it's a Bethesda game, seamless exploration, diverse side quests. I'll start first addressing combat, it's a miles step up compared to their previous games (switching to FPS and TPS) and I like the new mech where you can use the gravity while you're in combat

As usual it's a Bethesda game, seamless exploration, diverse side quests. I'll start first addressing combat, it's a miles step up compared to their previous games (switching to FPS and TPS) and I like the new mech where you can use the gravity while you're in combat which is most of the time effective, Sidequest, mostly hit or miss, but those that stands out are the factions and I love the Crimson Fleet and the Freestar Collective so far I enjoy progressing the quest, other gameplay mech that stands out are Ship Building (which will take you hours just to set up what design you like), level up system/skills system (which you'll need to unlock a certain level of skill by doing some think like "kill 5 enemies using a Rifle - in order to unlock the LvL 2 skill of that category and spending skill points to acquire the ability", Outpost Building another gameplay that will consume your time and it's worth especially if you want to gather resources on using them by designing you space suit, modifying your weapons or anything related that required certain resource and also you can build your base the way you want to.

Cons, mainly playing on XSS, performance is rough, 30 FPS, with some notable bugs such as clipping, unable to use any workstation, (which all can be fixed by saving and loading), and most notable terrible AI, graphics aren't visually attractive if you're into graphics, but most notable and annoying in my experience is multiple crashing on XSS in my one playthrough like 8 hours straight and had in 8 crashes which is horrible experience.

Overall Starfield is a good game but some Cons are definitely worth mentioning. Regardless, it's a very addicting game and I'm having fun playing the game in spite of experiencing game crashes.

Larian's games like Divinity & Baldurs Gate have given us a fresh look at the brilliance of interconnected story threads & rpg mechanics. games like Horizon: FW showed us how phenomenal these worlds can be without loading (draw distance, fidelity, detail, physics). No Mans Sky showed us how space traversal can be immersive & realistic by flying to a planet, entering its atmosphere, landing & climbing out of your ship. what does Starfield show us? what screams "next-gen" about starfield? xbox cant even get it to run faster than 30fps on their series x. sorry, no performance mode in 2023 is a massive fail.

Bethesda needs to move on & join current gen. we can only hope they leave their creation engine in the dustbin where it belongs for ES6. because this stuff isnt impressing anyone anymore.

It's a big game, but starts way too slowly, and may never get interesting.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
