The latest from BGS starts off as a bit slower of a start than some of their previous games. Once some of the mechanics have been unlocked the game really gets going.

It's truly gripped me and is a game that actually gets me excited to play, there hasn't been a game like that for quite a few years.

Graphically although detailed in places the game feels uneven. Can look fantastic when there is not a lot going on, so more the art that is the winner here. Lighting can feel very flat and NPC look below average for modern day standards.HDR is a mess and looks washed out and grey, why there is no slider after the game has been delayed previously.
Positives: some quest lines are really great perhaps some of the best Bethesda have ever done , but some are really repetitive. Gun play is massively improved over their previous work such as Fallout, but don't expect Halo or Doom levels of gun play. Overall Fallout 3 is still my favourite Bethesda game, but thrwe is still lots to like about Starfield despite its shortcomings but I don't believe it has delivered on the hype that was built.

I genuinely don't understand how people rate this a 0 or a 10. This game is mediocrity personified. It was hyped up to be game of the decade, but fell short completely. Is it big? Yes. Is it worth exploring? Barely. Does it give you a high degree of freedom? Yes, but not to the level that was promised. Is that freedom enjoyable? Barely, almost everything you do feels clunky and like a chore.

    - Unintuitive: This game is clearly not for a new player. Nothing is explain. I played over 20 hours and I still don't understand most of the stuff. Tutorials and "hints" do not help at all
    - Too much is not something good: Too many things to take care of, give me the impression that things were thrown in there just so the game can be "huge".
    - Grinding: Crafting is awful - Spend 10 hours to get some skill points > Skill Up > Gather materials to research > Go research > Gather materials to craft > Get +1 bullet in your gun. This is just awful
    - NPC: Their faces... No expression, no nothing. Reminds me of the "My face is tired" incident in Mass Effect Andromeda
    - Repetitive: Activities and MISC mission in particular are boring and repetitive and gives you almost nothing. Planets, systems, starts - just a joke, copy paste assets just to give the sentiment of exploring a whole multiverse. Go to the stairs up and down > Take the elevator > wait for loading screen

Combat is ok, but its more like a borderlands game without a significant skill system based around combat, and a fairly uninspiring set of weapons to use.

Bethesda have more and more become the activation company we all hoped they would not become, fallout 76 and not starfield being quite hard to recommend that seems more interested in adding features that salesmen like to sell, but without as much substance so that players will et heaps of joy from.

Also, Bethesda, please improve your lip sync tech, its very bad compared to what's on offer these days, sometimes utterly out o sync with what an NPC is saying.

Sure, I think a few people will di it more than me, and perhaps I am over RPG FPS games, so for those I wish you luck. But its been a real disappointment or me.

If I were to sum this game up in a few words, I would have to say Elder Scrolls/Fallout and Mass Effect got together and had a baby - and Starfield is the result.

I've seen loads of reviews stating how disjointed this game is, the fact that you can't seamlessly fly from one planet to another. But that was never the intention of Bethesda. They didn't set out to build a grand space sim.

They stuck to what they know and also what they do best. Telling stories.

If like me you are a fan of previous Bethesda games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and 4) Then You should know what to expect, albeit it on a much grander scale.

This game has a very slow burn at the start, which may put some people off, however I would urge people to stick with it as the rewards are well worth it.

I have only played for around 30 hours so far and in that time, I've completed a couple of main missions, around 10 sub-missions and have travelled to about 20 locations. I've barely scratched the surface, but have enjoyed the ride so far immensely.

Yes, there are a lot of loading screens during play, but for me it really didn't detract from the enjoyment I was having. In fact, I'll go as far to say that it's been a long time since I've had this much fun playing a game (and I've played loads of different games over the years)

Is it perfect? - No, but if you look hard enough you can find fault in any game.

Is it fun? - Hell yes, the total freedom to go where you want and do what you want. Missions and Side missions that actually have some heart and soul, not just the same old “go here collect this take it to there” style missions (I’m not saying that it doesn’t have any of these, just not an abundance). This actually has a lot of variety. You can tell that a lot of time and love has been put into the story of this game.

I haven't really got around to looking into the piracy and bounty hunting aspects (or even the ship building) so still an awful lot of things to try, but from what I've played so far, I can see this game taking me through to at least early next year before I put it down for a while. (that is until new DLC is added or Mods catch my attention)

In short, this game is a blast and you really ought to give it a try. (I don't think you'll be disappointed - provided you understand what this game is and what it isn't)

I have been playing it non stop since the release and still can't wait to hop back into it anytime I am occupied by something else. The insane scale of this game is something you really need to experience yourself. Even after playing it for over a hundred hours by now, I still keep on experiencing new things. The introduction is actually not as long as people say it is. In my opinion, the vast amount of distractions (as in things to do) is most likely what causes that. My advice is to just keep playing. The game really does get better and better everytime you do. Graphically it is hit or miss. Some things look amazing whilst others could use some more polish. But, I don't mind given how massive the game is. And.. honestly when you play, you barely even notice those things anyway. You will be too busy doing mission, exploring, mining, ship building, base building and a lot more. It is so hard to review this without spoilers since there is so many things going on in the game. All I can say is; believe me when I say that anyone rating this game 7 or lower has most likely not played the game much if at all. Don't let it scare you off. Buy the game, you won't regret it. Even worse these tiny maps are just random generation environments with the same 3 or 4 dull activities randomly scattered across the map/planet. Scan, scan some more, scan some more and occasionally do dome shooting and lasering same thing and the enemies just run at you and stand in front of you. Or just randomly run from random points. At first I was enjoying the game learning the system , but after 10 hours I was just doing the same thing over and over on similar looking areas. This all might be OK if the story and characters carried you through, but its all modern cringe writing with this ugly unappealing characters we find in so many modern games. After not long I was just skipping dialogue in hopes I could enjoy the game systems..But its just shallow. Leveling is just picking perks, that's it! and then there are few generic crafting chores. Basic stuff where you can't build nothing until you pick the perk then you can use some of that useless junk that weighs you down to make more useless junk cause the game still has to be fair if you dont do crafting.
At first I liked the combat but after not long your just fighting the same red human dudes and handful of alien animals that a spread across all the planet/maps.
Off course then there the woke stuff. Yeh it's all there and it's and crap as it always is.Ugly unappealing chicks everywhere , female empowerment with all leaders being butch and manly woman.. Averting the male gaze. Even the one attractive girl that is your companion is made unappealing by sounding like an irritating posh 70 year old.
I got 15 hour and could go any further, it's just boring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can I say about Starfield it's the best Dam! Bethesda Game I ever played. Disclaimer I haven't completed it yet but 100+ hours in I think I can safely say that I know the game. Exploration: I know everyone has been up and down on Starfield because it's not your typical Bethesda exploration but I have enjoyed it so much to see and explore even if you think you seen it all a ship lands or you come across a new facility to plunder. Story : yeah it good does it blow me away like some games have no but I feel it's got more staying power and more legs than Fallout 4. It's a Bethesda game I have always said if the story was so compelling then you wouldn't want to go off the beat and path and explore.
Combat: I have enjoyed the combat it's not as smooth as some games but it's definitely fun for this type of game. Now let's address everything that people complain about :
Loading screens yes it has them does it ruin your experience only if you let it. None seamless transition from planet to space, you really have to be nit picking if you can take a cut scene or Loading screen. Invisible walls I have explored hundreds of planets so far and on a few I have just walked and you really don't notice them invisible walls it's literally 40 minutes of walking boosting ect...to even it them and I have done it once on purpose so no need to worry you probably won't run in to them.
This is where the spoiler comes in the game is slow to begin with and takes you completing a few main story missions to get you powers for the game to open up a little, make this could be a draw back for some people especially if you have like a few hours to try and get into it, but my advice stick with it you will thank me later. Bugs and glitches not seen much on series X or S it's stable had a few texture and sound issues but nothing a reload couldn't fix after 100+ hours nothing game breaking nothing that could detract from the game. I give Starfield a 8 because overall it's great experience my GOTY but little things hold it back from a 9/10 it's definitely a great game that if you like Bethesda or Sci-fi games you should definitely check out.

Ship combat feels good and gets better the more you upgrade your ship to handle maneuverability base on fighter style gameplay but you can adjust your ship around your play style (bounty hunter/transporter and so on). A major component to this is readjusting power to the different systems such as shields weapons and gravity drive during dog fights.

On planet gameplay feels good here too. Gun combat is satisfying and different feel of gravity on planets/moons is a nice touch. This gives you more verticality in gun fights as you can jump higher due to some environments having low gravity and booster feel to make you feel like Boba Fett.
Graphics to me look good including character models. Voice dialogue is convincing and really good and character models compliment them pretty well for the most part. Game runs smooth on the Series X.

My biggest drawback is the travel between planets within a same star system and when you’re in orbit traveling to the planet/moon where they are broken apart by loading screen. I would’ve loved to see what Starlink Battle for Atlas or No Man Sky implementation in regards to travel and its seamless feel between planets/moons.

Game still has some minor bugs but nothing that broke immersion and experience so far. I highly recommend this and if it wasn’t for the space travel issues I addressed earlier, this would’ve been a 9/10 but docked it down to 8/10 cause traveling is a big part of gameplay and this was a miss that baffled me.

Bethesda have done what they do best and have made one of the most immersive and expansive worlds I have ever seen in a game, to the point where I have done 3 story missions in 26hrs of playtime, there’s always something fairly captivating to do and even then simply exploring is often fun enough, the ship / weapon / spacesuit customisation / base building is incredible, the attention to detail is also ridiculously good, i mean you can literally flip toilet paper and the physics are like nothing I have seen before. I do have a few nitpicks with the game however: there is far too much reliance on fast travel and the game would be benefitted if you could fly around the same solar system without a loading screen, although i do think that a loading screen to land is justified as it would be incredibly tedious trying to land in the perfect position on rocky planets, the ground traversal and combat also isn’t revolutionary but that’s not the main pull of the game, plus it’s nostalgic for me because it feels as if I’m playing fallout 4, but the game makes up for these nitpicks in other areas. Starfield is easily on par with earlier games like skyrim and fallout 3 / NV, if you enjoyed those games you will enjoy this one, and if you didn’t enjoy those games you shouldn’t be allowed to play games at all Expand

Starfield reminds us that space travel is... just not fun.

There are a lot of things that Starfield does well, but the key marketed feature of "exploring the galaxy" and "discovering what's out there" is definitely not one of them. There are a lot of things that Starfield does well, but the key marketed feature of "exploring the galaxy" and "discovering what's out there" is definitely not one of them. I know that games like this need to walk a fine line between realism and being enjoyable to play, but Starfield does neither particularly well.

The biggest issue is the space travel, or rather, almost complete lack of it. I knew that we would not be able to enter/exit orbit without a loading screen, which is understandable. However, you cannot even travel to the nearest planet/moon without having to open menus and selecting fast travel. One might say that this is the realism of planets being so far away - it would realistically take ages to travel to them. Fair enough, but the solar system map tosses this realism out the window with the scale it shows between planets and stars (just see the Sol system). Could Bethesda not have found a happy middle ground between seemingly stagnant flight speeds and immediate galaxy warp that would have allowed us to actually fly through solar systems? Starfield's space travel basically comes down to nothing but menu selections, fast traveling, and loading screens. It is not fun or enjoyable at all. When Todd Howard said, "You can go there," he literally meant, "You can load there."

Another issue that people are bringing up is the lack of discovery on the planets/moons. This is in part due to the procedural generation being utilized and also probably the realism that Bethesda sought to convey. However, it makes the game feel lackluster and boring. I agree with the critiques along these lines.

NPC's are what you would expect from Bethesda with their positive and negative elements. Voice acting is good and they look better than previous games (naturally), but they still have the Bethesda robotic feel to them. They turn unnaturally in conversations (torsos turning while feet remain planted forward) and their eyes still seem lifeless/off. They interrupt each other constantly making it hard to hear conversations and followers are almost always falling behind. Bethesda does have NPC citizens spawn from doorways to make cities feel more inhabited, which I appreciate, but the spawns don't always make sense (dozens continuously coming out of a building that is empty inside).

A small nitpick, but when you leave orbit the game loads you facing the planet/moon you just left. This doesn't help the little space travel immersion that is left in the game. Why am I facing the planet that I just left?

Starfield isn't a bad game, but it certainly is not great. I've been playing Bethesda games since Morrowind came out and I'm struggling to have fun with this one. It has all the elements of a Bethesda game (character creation, role playing, fetch quests, item interaction, etc.) without the same sense of discovery and exploration. Imagine playing Skyrim and instead of walking from town to town traveling the world, you could only traverse a small area outside of a town before having to load to another small area outside of another town - not as an option, but a requirement. That's Starfield - you can load to a lot of places and walk around on barren planets/moons, but not travel through space in any meaningful and fun way.

I expected good spaceflight (is that the correct term?) but there really isn’t even a point to the tedious meas they call spaceflight since you can warp wherever, whenever. They took too many pages out of Elite Dangerous’ boring, tedious playbook. While Starfield isn’t bad at all (ignore people review-bombing it), it certainly isn’t 85-Metacritic-good. With a “creative choice” to lock the game at 30fps (Phil Spencer said that it wasn’t a hardware issue), it just proves that Bethesda lies through their teeth and still don’t know how to properly optimize their games and people need to stop defending them. There is absolutely zero reason the game can’t run at 60fps. Any other company would have made it run with a better frame rate. But Bethesda is known for this stuff and people keep defending it. So that really sucks the life out of the game. The main story is really boring and confusing. The characters are meh. Some are decent but most are completely forgettable. Unlike Fallout or Elder Scrolls, I have no real desire to explore or really do anything in the game. For the most part, it is just boring. Landing on any planet or moon is a barren wasteland full of nothing. At its core, the game is still a Bethesda game and still plays fine, despite them not coming up with a different formula, but it really fails to hit the mark in a lot of ways. Having said all of that, there is still plenty of fun to be had with this game. I just wish it was more entertaining. Expand

    - Enemy NPC's are still lacking in terms of programming.
    - The game starts a little slow but given that it's a brand-new IP/universe, I'm fine with this.
    - There are more loading screens than there should be.

Having said all of that, this game's setting captures you and there are plenty of possibilities gameplay-wise to keep you occupied for hours. Character creation has improved significantly, additions such as traits and backgrounds go a long way in making your character feel unique and grounded in the setting (my character had parents, a house with a mortgage, and a background as a space trucker in the UC, for example).

The game is technically sound when compared to Bethesda's previous efforts, I only encountered three "bugs" in my forty-ish hours of gameplay. The writing has seen a notable step up in quality since Fallout 4. Dialogue options are expanded and the game's persuasion mini-game is well done, I wish other RPG's had a similar system. I also greatly appreciate Starfield's new and improved lockpicking mini-game. Gunplay in this game is also a considerable step up when compared to their previous titles, though the melee combat seems a bit drab in contrast. Starfield also features a solid weapon customization system and an even better ship customization system. You truly get to be who you want to be in this game's universe.

The game's scope is impressive, even if the end result has more loading screens than you'd like. The random encounters both in space and on land are often quite intriguing. Some were complaining about the planetary boundaries on the worlds after you land, but even though I've scanned and surveyed dozens of planets and moons, I've never bumped into these barriers (it's a non issue, in other words). The environments are varied, the fluctuations in gravity and weather make for fun gameplay, and the game's settlement building system can turn any of these worlds into your own homebase.

The sidequests are as eclectic and wacky as ever, the game's companions and crew members are great, and Starfield's soundtrack and world design holds up to the rest of Bethesda's back catalogue. It may not be the future of gaming, but we don't live in the future, and I personally believe that Starfield's positives far outweigh its negatives. It is a good Bethesda game, and that statement alone puts it on the same level as games like Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4. If you enjoyed any of those games and are down for a sci-fi adventure, you will have a blast in Starfield. It's every bit as good as any of their previous titles. I'd personally give it an 8.5 out of 10, but I'm rounding up instead of down since it seems there's a lot of bad-faith review bombing going on here.

But. At no point in the game am I actually having fun in the moment. For the first dozen hours, I am instead merely anticipating enjoyment, but it never comes. This is because the developers were so focussed on the big things I listed above that they forgot to make any of the constituent elements of those things interesting or fun.

The space fights devolve into trivial encounters in which one holds a button while following another ship, or they consist of a series of jousts. The ground combat is seriously like something out of the 90s, the AI is basic AF and the layout of the missions means that an interesting stealth approach is generally unfeasible.

The missions are structured in a way that leaves one simply fast travelling and waiting in loading screens, or even worse, following a cookie cutter npc as they walk incredibly slowly towards another npc. When the NPCs speak, it is with half arsed vocal performances delivering lines so boring that one learns mash the skip button within 5 minutes of playing.

Anyone who's played Star Citizen knows that one of the best things about that game is how seamless the transition between atmosphere and space is, the knowledge that you could actually fly 2km down to the surface and land your ship enriches the (broken) experience so much. The fact that Bethesda did not allow us to fly in atmosphere and land our ships and all that is baffling to me. They go to all this effort to make different planets and outer space, but don't actually link them in an interesting way. Because of this, each planet, and space itself, feels siloed when it should all feel connected and open.

Genuinely, honestly, the highlight of this game is the lockpicking. Finally someone has found a nice middle ground in difficulty for this age-old game mechanic.

Between the interest in this, Star Citizen and No Man's Sky, we know the market for a great space opera game is out there. No one seems quite able to pull it off.

This game is so bad there is no explenation if i could describe this game with one word it would be trash can and watchin a garbage man empty the trash is a 100% more entertaining than playing this dumb game waste of money and time and 30fps in 2023

Maybe I was expecting too much of this next-gen exclusive but nothing about it feels next-gen at all. 30 FPS with tons of loading screens It's basically fallout with a space background. Something about empty procedurally generated worlds just doesn't excite me and the lack of vehicles sucks. The space exploration is mostly just combat It's all fast travel and cutscenes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will update if the game ever gets good I have enjoyed absolutely nothing so far I’m only a very slow 11 hours in. Controls super clunky, shooting very inconsistent, planets are a joke not real planets literally only a few things to do, I hate the scanning you have to be super close to scan and there’s almost nothing to scan, not like No Man’s Sky where you can scan EVERYTHING. Very very boring I’m trying to push through cause people say it gets better but this is a snooze fest so far I’m at Mars constellation mission. I’m trying to enjoy it but it’s definitely super weird and other games do everything better just haven’t had any fun yet. Expand

This is Bethesda storytelling at its best! Having a blast! The faction quests dive deep and tell very great story’s. There’s not too many fetch quests in the game which is a huge bonus.

I started out with high expectations for Starfield. The last game they put out was fallout 4 I put hundreds of hours in that game. But it was shallow. Has it lived up to all my expectations? Yes! It even exceeded most of them! There is no such thing as the perfect game. 10 doesn't mean perfect. This game went beyond my expectations. "Decent" looking for a game on their ancient, outdated engine
    Ship building
    Cons:
    - Everything is boring. The story is boring, the characters are boring, the environments are boring.
    - Exploration is a joke. This is a loading screen simulator as you simply spawn back and forth between empty, lifeless "zones".
    - Spaceship building is pointless since you can literally fast travel anywhere, at any time and bypass "space" segments.
    - Space segments are like the "zones" on worlds: you're in a box or a "fish bowl" where the planets are backdrops (that people have clipped through). Its the illusion of space "travel"
    - Spaceships are an illusion, you can't fly them over land, you spawn on a map and have to walk everywhere
    - No vehicles to traverse the large, empty, boring zones.
    - Side quests are next level dull
    - NPCs look worse sometimes than Skyrim and FO4
    - Bugs and glitches, many that are game breaking
    - Voice acting in some parts is laughably bad
    - Every world has 1-2 space crabs or lizards
    - No HDR support (Lol! Why Bethesda?!) and no Brighness options (?)
    - Most planets are flat, bland and uninteresting
    - No mining, usually not more than 1-3 points of "interest" in any "zone".
    - Worst AI in any Bugthesda game.
This is a distaster. Starfield is the crappier version of No Mans Sky, it doesn't even come close to having the features, the functionality, the interest or the competence of a 7 year old indie game.

Bethesda and Xbox deserve one another.

An enjoying the game so far. It’s not perfect and yes there are some bugs and a lack of genuine galactic exploration. It’s certainly not the dumpster fire some are making it out to be! Would recommend you getting it as part of your gamepass experience (on a side note, likening it to the failure of Redfall is so far off the mark it’s embarrassing).

However, I think Bethesda is lying to us/players. The game is not Next-Gen. The graphics are not good, and the game physics are very bad. When we jump into the water, it's as if the character hit the concrete, and when we shoot at the environment, there is neither bullet marks nor a physical reaction.
The artificial intelligence is very bad, no one in the game reacts to anything, they just stare. Where is Next-Gen?
Rockstar Games games released years ago are more Next-Gen than Starfield.
Starfield looks like nothing but a soulless and dead work.
This is not a game to be played as it is, and I think we players, instead of Bethesda, will trust the modders and wait for the game to be better.
    Well done, Bethesda.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
