Graphics is decent but some are not policed, Story is generic, AI is bad it's from other game.
you go. played 20 hours + and feels like a waste of time. you do the same thing over and over and it's not rewarding. This game was so overhyped Fallout 4 is way better than this game.

There is a fundamental lack of creativity and risk taking here. The game is disappointing, not because it fails at materializing its vision, but because of how poor the vision is in the first place.

The perfect space rpg, There's so much to do on every planet, so many random encounters, and so many ways to play. You can join the military, you can be a cowboy, a trucker, a freelancer, a pirate, so much more. And perfectly encapsulates the spirit of exploration. There's something new around every corner.

I haven't had any loading screen issues, and I'm not fast travelling at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Starfield has been out now for a week with early access. and I have to say that I share many feelings and opinions that the community do with this game. It is a very slow burn to begin with -- but once you get going, you can’t put the damn thing down.

Don’t worry — there won’t be any spoilers here in this review. We will start at the begining of the game however, not discussing the story
Starfield has been out now for a week with early access. and I have to say that I share many feelings and opinions that the community do with this game. It is a very slow burn to begin with -- but once you get going, you can’t put the damn thing down.

Don’t worry — there won’t be any spoilers here in this review.

We will start at the begining of the game however, not discussing the story aspect but just how it goes. It’s a Bethesda title so it’s a nice little tutorial. You learn basics: walking, talking, mining, shooting, navigating menus, using your ship etc…

The tutorial is a good entry into the game. There’s a lot to learn, but the game doesn’t throw everything at you all at once. You progressively learn how to things such as outposts and upgrading your ship. However, some areas such as the Digipicking minigame are not explained well enough and would have benefited from a better explanation.

During the tutorial you will also create your character. This is a pretty detailed one, you can really go in on how you want to look, choose your name (and pronouns!) Aswell as a backgrounds and some traits which can unlock some new dialogue options or alter the way you play.

Let’s not beat around the bush and ignore the main part of what makes Starfield a Space RPG. Space! The controls for your ship are basic and easy to understand after a short time using it. Space combat is relatively basic but with perks you can get a bit more advanced, taking out enemies weapons to prevent them shooting you or destroying their engines and docking then boarding their ship.

Additionally, despite space being so vast with numerous systems within the Settled Systems, it’s not always empty — of course, it will be a lot of the time but you can often find yourself encountering various NPCs who you can interact with, some are just fun little encounters, some will involve fighting. A bit of variety to make you question whether you should prepare for a fight whenever you see a ship infront of you.

Landing back on the surface, let’s talk exploration. When you land on a planet/moon you will be given a tile to explore. Various points of interests can generate in these tiles and ships can occasionally land. However we must note that it can be at times, tedious to get on/off a surface as you will experience a load screen, animation and another load screen. I must say also, the points of interests can be really interesting with some quests/hidden story & lore buried within them if you’re a keen explorer.

Graphically I don’t feel experienced enough to comment on this part of the game; but I recommend you check out Digital Foundry’s in-depth analysis.

Cities: Skylines, are beautiful. The cities feel very lived in, busy, bustling. However I’d be lying if I said the NPC civilians looked great, they can be questionable but I do excuse Bethesda bit on this as they’re meant just for background noise, the key NPCs are much better modelled.

In conclusion: Starfield is a great game if you can stomach the slow burn before you feel it start to really open up for you. The game has its ups and downs but the ups far outweighed the downs for me. There’s a lot to do and a lot to explore but this game doesn’t throw it all at once. There’s flaws such as bugs, crashes, badly explained mechanics, load screens and poor NPC models but given how far and few the crashes were, how I gradually learned the mechanics I struggled, how fast the game loaded and how rarely I looked at an NPC long enough to care? I don’t feel these detracted from the game for me

Too outdated graphic engine, very crude animations and too many loading screens to be a game of the new generation. In terms of gameplay and content it is quite extensive and fun, but it has too many technical deficiencies

Honestly, I can go on and on about this "game of the generation" but that will make me put more effort into this that the entire dev team did on MidField.
    - Game looks like its from 2015
    - Runs like **** for what it looks - No modern technology implementations. - Facial animations from paleolithic age - not bug free(AAA standards and not bgs stds) - nothing interesting even in first

    - NO minimap or map of any kind.
    - AI is worse than games from 2000s
    - Every npc or quest character dialogues are snoozefest
    - Nothing is polished or makes you say, wow that is well done.
    - movement, gunplay, looting, UI is janky.
    - Repetitive copy paste bull**** of locations in the first hours of gameplay and in the planets that TODD LIEward claimed to be handcrafted.
    - Space exploration is non existent
    - Flight controls which even games from 90s did better
    - Story is lackluster with no depth or care.

To studio: post bg3 I am expecting more. you have on a market games like star citizen and no man’s sky, you can use them as example how space exploration should work. No one is expecting you to deliver unlimited number of planets but cut scenes for land and start, limited exploration area….
My advice: don’t false advertise, do what you are good in, if game will be good and fair, gamers will forgive you many imperfections, don’t overpay your managers.

    Pros

    - Initial appeal
    - Music
    - Scenary
    - Character customization
    - Ship building/customization

    Cons

    - No memorable characters
    - Weak main story which culminates into no answers
    - All enemies are the same - combat reduced to massive bullets and grenades spam against the same enemies from start to end of the game
    - Low weapon variety and next to no creativity of how to do dmg
    - Load screens are acceptable to some extend, but overused
    - Hitboxes are absolutely awful even with weapons specialization
    - UI - basically missing, a few colors put together in paint as background, no elements, no visual explanations
    - Inventory management - mostly annoying, no search, no filter, no sorting, all jammed up together
    - Weak graphics for a 2023 AAA game, especially one focused on Space
    - No boss fight mechanics
    - While planets have several biomes combinations, exploration is reduced to landing on planets followed by 1. walking, 2. explore cave, 3. explore base, 4. kill the same enemy, 5. loot, repeat for every planet.
    - Space combat is scenery, but lacks identity - somewhere between EVE online and SWBF2
    - No immersion in cities - no reactions to player actions

Despite the major blunder of Fallout 76's launch, Starfield has proved that Bethesda is most certainly capable of creating engaging gameplay loops, wonderful stories and side quests, and interesting worlds that will hold your interest for dozens, if not hundreds, of hours.

Something that stuck out to me when I started the game was the graphical fidelity and overall look and feel of the game. There is heavy usage of procedural generation in the terrain and planets which means there will often be textures that look murky or washed out--but the handcrafted content is such high quality visually that I almost forget I'm playing a Bethesda game. With hundreds of hours split across Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, I've become very used to the antiquated Creation Engine in all its visual soupiness and technical fragility. But Creation Engine 2 is a frankly astonishing step up for Bethesda's engine. When rumors first appeared of a revamped engine, I was skeptical as these games have always had a certain jank to them. But CE 2 is a true improvement that brings much-needed modernization to the Bethesda formula. You can climb ladders now! This may be the new addition I'm most excited to see return in future BGS games. Clamboring, boost-pack jumping, and the gravity system all also feel excellent to play around with. The physics of this game are also a blast, especially in Zero-G areas, and have become some of the most unique moments I've had in a BGS game almost instantly.

But enough with the engine--the artistic core of the game largely works for me. As a huge fan of sci-fi, real world space exploration, and the mystery and intrigue that comes along with the thought of humanity exploring the vastness of space made me primed to like this game. It's clear the amount of passion and love poured into Starfield and everything new it brings to the table, even if some parts don't quite stick the landing. Something that does, however, is the music. Bombastic, intriguing, or mysterious, it manages to evoke themes of Elder Scrolls and Fallout, while still feeling distinct and "spacey". Some of the writing was a bit corny for my taste, but some of it was very enjoyable (this is true for character writing such as dialogue, but also narrative writing & plot, as well as questlines). A couple of the gameplay systems can end up feeling cumbersome later in the game, and dauntingly large early game, but if you're willing to commit to them, such as operating, building or upgrading your ship; diving into crafting weapon and suit mods; or the intensive network of resource mining, so you can craft resources to further build mods, or sell for credits, etc. There is a mountain of content and interwoven systems that seem too large to handle, but will get easier as you stick with them.

The gunplay may be the most noticeably improved system in the game, to the point where it nearly doesn't seem like a BGS title. If Fallout 4 was an RPG first with a so-so FPS haphazardly glued to it, then Starfield is an FPS first with excellent RPG systems masterfully infused. The guns feel, play, shoot and sound so tacitly. They look visually unique, cover a wide range of styles and damage types, and even at 55+ hours into the game are far and away one of the most satisfying components of the core gameplay loop.

The main story may or may not be for everyone; if you like screwing around with BGS's design choices and just living in their worlds and have only loosely engaged with their narratives, then you will more than likely enjoy your time with Starfield no matter what. But if the "big questions" about why humans exist, what our purpose is, and are there other intelligent species out there don't captivate your mind--then you likely won't find the main story all that compelling, even compared to Bethesda's other games. But if these questions pique your curiosity, then the main questline will hold your attention long enough to see what it all builds to.

Starfield is nothing revolutionary, but it was never proclaimed it would be. And if you were expecting No Man's Sky or Star Citizen, then you'll be disappointed--because that's not what this game attempts to do. It's a space RPG, not a space sim.

Starfield is a perfect example of a revolutionary, generation defining, AAA game, if this was the year 2013. The game is not bad by any means, it is actually pretty fun, but fails to hit those wow moments and is accompanied by its many flaws, of which the space exploration, or lack thereof, and planet exploration are the most prominent.

Planets give the feeling of just being empty balls

Planets give the feeling of just being empty balls of rock, with little to no actual points of interest present, for a big portion of the cave systems and outposts are just a matter of copy and paste, all the way down to spawn points and loot. The game takes a long time to get going, and when it does you see yourself in an okay-ish story at best.

Furthermore, on the tech side of Starfield, the game is definitively the most polished game ever produced by Bethesda, but it still has many issues when it comes to optimization, glitches and bugs, all capped at 30 fps. If you are a fan of the typical Bethesda formula, you will no doubt love this game, but those who had hoped and expected more are left with somewhat of a disappointment.

Starfield is one of the few games that immerses you in a unique environment. Comparing it to Starcitizen or No mans Sky is unfair, starfield has a different atmosphere and mechanics. It is an excellent game. I've been playing it for 83 hours and it's very addictive.

Hand's down the most disappointing game of the year, this was supposed to be the game of the generation, but it's just another overhyped bethestha mediocre game heavenly held back by their ancient engine.

It's a complete step back from their other big game's, even fallout 4 which in itself is already pretty meh. it's simply not the xbox comeback everyone was expecting

    Bad-
Combat is sometimes let down by frustrating enemy and companion AI; Some technical issues, most of which are rather minor.

    Thoughts-
Even after having spent dozens of hours exploring the expanses of the Settled Systems, I feel like I’ve only just started scratching the surface. And while ordinarily an experience that massive might have started wearing thin for me by now, with Starfield, I’m still ravenously hungry to consume every little bit of it. It’s an incredible experience that not only boasts immense scale, but also backs it up with actual substance and legitimate depth. In the end, it delivers a landmark achievement in gaming that’s going to be spoken about for years to come- an accomplishment that Bethesda Game Studios is all too familiar with.

Relatively good graphics, but nothing special either.
Otherwise it is boring.... empty... full of bugs... and has no soul, like most games nowadays.
Good that it's in the Game Pass... so you don't have to waste your money on it.

With my hopes up high on Starfield, the game itself lived up to my heavy expectations, with a nice story, great combat and gunplay that actually works, interesting characters, and overall, one of the better games of this year, and a Xbox Series X game not named the fantastic “Hi Fi Rush” that is actually worth it on the console.

its world felt like they pushed a super realistc take on the space world which felt weak especialy towards something like the elder scrolls and fallout which took a more fantasy approach to its world

the game lacked something like the star wars world setting
more space or alien like people you can talk or even be
it feels too realistc compard to other games they made

while combat is improved i felt the AI has not been improved
ai still is braindead and easy to cheese and now you are able to kill enemies 10-15 lvl above what you are

traveling the planets also feels mid
the invisable wall drama only made it worse as lead devs from bethesda promised it diffrently then what we got

the ship combat feels weak also and something you will get annoyed by
the story felt weak as well with you being forced to play 12 hours of slop boring stuff to even get to the "good stuff"

lets not begin about the loading screens and how that is more of the game then a real game

this release was something many say is goty or game of the century which its not
and rpg of the year it lost by a mile away against bg3

    pro
    -combat is improved from fo4
-it looks at times pretty good

    cons
    -30 fps is noticable
    -weak story
    -ship combat annoying

Yes, the game is not perfect. It does have its flaws, like loading screens and the occasional wonky NPC that shambles by. But having said that, it's still the most fun I've had with a game all year. This is easily my Game of the Year as it even beats out Zelda: TOTK, in my opinion.

If you go into this looking for No Man's Sky you'll be disappointed. If you go into it looking for a Bethesda RPG, there's a lot to love. It's a Bethesda RPG through and through. Lots of quests, side quests, random encounters, emergent storytelling, etc. You can even be a space pirate and attack and board ships and then steal their ship and make it your own. If you're into base-building and ship-building there's a lot to love here too, but I haven't dabbled too much into that.

It's also worth noting that this is the most bug-free game Bethesda has ever had at launch, which is fantastic. I haven't noticed many bugs and have had zero crashes. Some people don't want to mention this because they're sadists and want to punish Bethesda for past offenses from decades ago. I ask you, if you're a teacher and a student who consistently gets D's starts to work hard and then gets an A, do you continue to punish the child for their failures of the past or do you congratulate them for a job well done? A decent, sane person would congratulate them. Only a psychopath would continue to punish them.

It's also worth noting that this is the most beautiful game Bethesda has done. Yes, some character models are weird, but the environment art, from the natural landscapes to the cluttered base interiors, is sublime. Their Global Illumination techniques are gorgeous and work very well. Sure, the game isn't as pretty as Cyberpunk or Horizon Forbidden West, but so what? This game is doing so much more than them.

Instead of focusing on the few things the game doesn't do, focus on all the things this game is actually doing. And it isn't any one thing. You need to see the forest for the trees and see the totality of the experience. Sure, you can't directly fly from planet to planet like NMS, but who cares? NMS doesn't have the some degree of role-playing quests and storytelling. And most of NMS's planets have one biome, whereas some of Starfield's planets have up to 4 distinct biomes on one planet.

I love this game more with each passing day. It's a genuinely special experience and if you like CRPGs it is very much worth your time. It gives as much as you put in.

Note: I've been playing on both XBox and PC.

Starfield Review - A Disappointing Space Odyssey
Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios' long-awaited space RPG, has finally hit the shelves. Unfortunately, this galactic adventure has left much to be desired, earning a lackluster 6 out of 10.
    The Bad:
    1. Endless Loading Screens: Starfield is plagued by excessively frequent loading screens that disrupt the flow of the game. The frequent interruptions detract from the overall experience.
    2. No Seamless Travel: Despite the vastness of its universe, Starfield fails to deliver seamless travel between planets and space stations. Instead, players are forced to endure more loading screens when traveling between celestial bodies, making the game feel disjointed.
    3. Buggy Mess: Bethesda's reputation for releasing buggy games remains intact with Starfield. The game is riddled with technical issues, ranging from game-breaking bugs to bizarre graphical glitches. These problems are inexcusable for a studio of Bethesda's caliber.
    4. Encumbrance System: Starfield's encumbrance system is frustrating and punitive, making inventory management a chore. It stifles exploration and detracts from the enjoyment of the game.
    5. Missing Maps: Starfield lacks comprehensive maps for its various planets and locations, leaving players feeling lost and disoriented in its sprawling universe. This absence of navigational aids hampers the overall experience.
    6. Missing Vehicles: While the game's universe offers the potential for exciting vehicle-based exploration, Starfield falls short in delivering a variety of vehicles for players to enjoy. This lack of diversity in transportation options limits the sense of adventure.
    The Mediocre:
    1. Ambitious Universe: Starfield's universe is indeed vast and visually impressive. However, it's ultimately a beautiful but hollow shell, lacking the depth and interactivity that would truly make it shine.
    2. Immersive Worldbuilding: While the game's lore and worldbuilding are extensive, they don't make up for the lackluster storytelling and underdeveloped characters. The potential for a rich narrative is squandered in favor of a generic space opera.
    3. Spaceflight Mechanics: While spaceflight controls are serviceable, they lack the depth and challenge that would have made them truly engaging.
    4. Repetitive Side Content: Starfield's side activities quickly become monotonous, offering little in the way of variety or excitement. The universe may be vast, but it often feels empty and devoid of meaningful content.
In summary, Starfield is a game that promised to be an epic space adventure but falls disappointingly short. The loading screens, lack of seamless travel, and numerous technical issues hinder what could have been an immersive experience. Coupled with a frustrating encumbrance system, missing maps, and a lack of diverse vehicles, Starfield's flaws far outweigh its few redeeming qualities. It's a missed opportunity, and one can't help but feel that Bethesda could have done better. Maybe future patches will fix these problems and make the game, what it should have been to begin with.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
