This has to be my absolute favorite Souls-like and From Software game. The game delivers on its promises of retaining that soul's formula. This will come across as frustrating for some, but that's what it's intended to be. The open-world nature of the Lands Bettwen is majestic in even the most colorless regions. One of the main reasons I found Sekiro to be boring is that all locations had the same feel. Most of the enemies were natural and earthly, looking to be rememberable. Elden RIng is everything I was hoping for in a From game. And if I could give a more accurate rating, I would give this a 9.9 because Elden RIng, in my eye, is flawless in world-building and charter design. I have one major criticism of the game, and I admit it is quite a funny criticism. In my eye, it has one of the worst opening theme songs in any of the From games. But besides that main criticism, this game is flawless and my pick for a possible match of the year. Expand

Though the game doesnt hold your hand throughout like most open world MMO games it is balanced enough so that you can go out explore as much as you want and still have a sense of direction on the path to complete game via sites of grace placed throughout the massive world. With dangers around every corner and bosses ranging from small to towering giants this game has it all, the added ability to play with your friends and explore together is a much loved bonus. Because sometimes (most times) you'll find yourself needing that extra hand to help defeat a boss or dungeon. No friends to play eith? No worries elden rings also gives you thr ability early on to summon spirits to your side to help you fight and defeat enemies as well as summon random players from other worlds into yours to help, along with you being summoned to theirs if wanted. This game is NOT accessible to everyone despite what the paid reviewers have said. I should have known as most content creators are just looking to get paid, not actually be helpful in any way.

I had some experience with From games going in. I did almost beat the base game Dark Souls 3. I did play a bit of Bloodborne. So it’s not like I came in blind or unsuspecting. But watching footage and listening to “reviewers” say this game is accessible gave me hope that maybe this would be a more fun version of the previous titles I played through. Nope. This is just as painful as any other souls game. And what’s worse is I convinced a friend to pick it up thinking that and he had zero experience with these kind of games and basically ally wasted $60.

I’ve put around 30 hours into the game. I’ve over-leveled myself because I just wanted to experience the game and the world in a more casual fashion. I don’t care to be a pro at this game. The open world is fantastic. It’s one of the best open world maps I’ve ever seen. Extremely dense. No place is the same. Packed with stuff to actually find and see. It’s filled with caves and dungeons and open world bosses everywhere. I can’t even count the amount of enemy types. So the world, the combat, the exploration, are all top notch as usual.

But it’s brutal out there. I often find myself dying still in a few shoots to almost anything. Arrows and rocks are buried from across the map from enemies that will destroy you. Trying to get out of combat just to use your map again is tedious. I guess I expected the open world part to be more casual and to have a decent way for leveling but this is not the case. Glitch farming methods are the only real way you can even level in this game and it’s no wonder everyone cheeses them.

Questing is absurd. I understand and accept that this is how From does it. I’m not here to try and change it. But doing quests is insanely confusing, and I just end up watching guides because I don’t want to spend hundreds of hours and multiple play throughs to do them. Many quests can be missed.

Bosses themselves haven’t been too bad depending on play style. But again, I over-leveled with a broken farming method and play a Mage so I’ve got range and a general OPness to me. But even at that you still die in a couple shots if not careful. So anyone who thinks they can over-level to the point of 1 shoting bosses or tanking all their attacks will be let down. I hate when gaming companies do this — lure you into a false sense of being powerful. I think that happens here. Even though you can get more powerful in ER than any other game they’ve made, you won’t really feel it and still die a ton.

I think a 7 is very appropriate for this title. There’s still plenty more to say, both good and bad, but I digress. It’s a good game. It’s not game if the year. It’s not game if the decade. It’s just a really solid game from a really solid developer. It’s just a game that’s not meant for everyone, despite how much I hate that statement and think it’s a terrible one. If your not a Souls player and lover, this game is not a entry to it.

Elden Ring is a good game, but that's it. Its dated as F! In fact it brought back memories of Dragons Lair for me. Move left - swing sword - move right - back step - swing sword what year is it? The exploration in the game is by far the only reason it gets as high a score from me personally. Its super fun to explore and find new places and enemies to kill but this game is so repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. Boss battles are the same, enemies everywhere are the same. It's a great step in a the right direction but if you're going to open your world map then you got to have a reason to live in it, it has to be an interesting place for me to ROLE PLAY. Not overly difficult if you level up and explore the world for better gear and weapons, but why else would you be playing an RPG. Combat is simple and fair most of the time and by fair i mean if you get hit you get punished, that's what these games are about. Sadly because that mechanic is so old and stale once you master moving and taking small bites you can really own this game. Its good but not as good as some other RPG'S over the years. Like Dragons Lair in the arcades as a kid a lot of people got pissed off the game was so hard and wanted their Quarters back. But if you just learned the patterns to the dungeons the Quarters started to go really far. If people were still buying physical copies of games Elden Ring would have its own pre-owned bin at every location. Solid 7/10 Expand

But the the major bosses are just very, very unfair. I'm a FromSoft veteran who's completed the King's Field and Dark Souls series, Bloodborne and Sekiro multiple times. This game isn't difficult like Sekiro or Bloodborne difficult. Those bosses were challenging, but very do-able. The problem I have, is that the majority of bosses in Elden Ring just spam attacks absolutely non-stop with infinite FP and stamina, leaving an absolute minuscule window to get hits in. Soloing this game is nigh-on impossible, especially late game when the difficulty is rammed even higher and suddenly.

These games, which heavily punish the player for mindless aggression, Miyazaki is quite happy to not apply that rule to his AI. And it proves how BS a boss is when noone even drops down co-op summon signs, because they don't want to go through that certain boss again.

I'm not saying it needs to be made easier, just a little evenly balanced. But then maybe try and embrace a wider audience by adding a slightly easier mode? All you need to do really is keep runes on death, that's it. But that's just me.

Rated it a 7 out of 10, because outside of the major bosses, this is a fun game, which I enjoyed with great exploration and design.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve always loved FS games, played all of them, except for Demon Souls. The early and mid game is phenomenal! The main bosses are super cool and cinematic, some bosses do get repetitive by the end of the game like the Tree Spirit and Burial Watchdogs. The main reason I didn’t give it a 10 was because I felt as though the late game was kind of a slog. Mountaintop of the Giants and beyond, the enemies get a huge spike in health and damage, while if you’ve properly explored your damage may be reaching its max with +10/+25 weapon and the soft cap for your attack attribute. I’ve seen many people complain about the graphics but I see it as a none issue, considering Miyazaki has said graphics have never been a priority. The priority has always been the storytelling and gameplay which FS has delivered with flying colors. Expand

What you should really take note of here is these “0” out of 10 reviews, Note how much they read more like petulant hyperbole than anything close to a critique. Well that’s because to expect this game to be different than the other Fromsoft games is ignorant at best, It takes what works from the rest of their work and finally starts to trim away from the fat that made prior games more like exclusionary niche titles and opened the genre to be much more accessible. The game never seems to stop opening up into new areas to explore and when played alongside friends has created a gaming experience I’ve found lacking in the industry for a longerg time. The open world allows for moving around and away from moments that served as roadblocks in prior titles. Can’t beat that boss? No problem, just go level up or try out a new weapon set up and come back. No more banging your head against the wall as you do the same fight for the 50th time. You can go at your own place and there is more variety to the game than just big sword smash and roll. And while the graphics are far from cutting edge, the game reminded me how little that matters in a game. Thanks for the stories Fromsoft, can’t wait to see what’s next. Expand

I’m astonished at the reviews for Dark Souls 4. This is the dark souls you already know and love (or hate). To put it simply: if you don’t like dark souls or fromsoftware’s previous titles, stay away from this. It’s more of the same. There is nothing new here, other than an expanded map you can move through freely.

Because dozens of games do horseback riding better. Do exploration better.

I am looking forward to playing a real game with a real story now. But this game was pleasant enough and fascinating to play for the first 30-40 hours, then its flaws begin to become apparent.

The lack of armour, meaningful RPG elements, weapons, direction, story, and lack of polish in combat and boss battles. Not to mention getting killed through walls, glitches, poorly implemented multiplayer, and zero character development or journal to aid in your adventures. However, these flaws are greatly overlooked in favour of the beautiful world, and I suppose that is the case with most reviewers.

But, make no mistake, this is a VERY frustrating game! Which is a shame. Because it is needlessly so. As of writing, almost two weeks after its release, judging from achievements, only 15% of players have finished it yet. I won't be one of those people, I have better things to do than waste hours on boss after boss after boss. But it was a lovely world for the first 30 hours and might be worth buying just to experience it for that alone, but afterwards, prepare for an unpleasant time, quite often, interlaced with fascination at the world design.

In my opinion, the best thing about the game is the fact that it truly lets you do whatever the hell you want to. In previous fromsoft titles, new areas were completely locked behind a major boss fight, whereas in elden ring, you can find your way around just about everything if you look hard enough. Fromsoftware uses this feature in a super creative way by adding teleporting devices and even trap chests, which teleport the player to a high level area which the player can either choose to warp back home or explore this dangerous area for very valuable loot.
It’s a shame people are trying to tarnish (get it) it’s reputation simply because they think they deserve for the game to be made exactly their way

Zero storyline.. apparently it’s a uNiQue MeTHoD of Storytelling.. but seems to me just a way to 1) not have to pay for voice actors because almost every NPC apart from a choice few are complete mutes even human characters 2) hiding the lack of programming ability to maintain loops or behaviors for the NPCs - so a) everytime you touch a grace or fast travel anywhere - every NPC / flower / bird goes back to the same exact spot and starts their day like some weird Truman show - Groundhog Day **** b) no immersion and no permanence in the game - might as well just run past every bad guy until you get the main boss because as soon as you go somewhere to level up every single bad guy will be reincarnated in the exact same spots, walk the exact same paths and do the exact same thing
    c) the can’t program interactions with the bosses with the environment well and limited environmental destruction so they have to lock you in the room with every boss so you ‘can’t escape’ but realistically it’s because they can’t program these creatures to interact with the world C) Making the game a complete grind to level up “to make the game difficult and rewarding” - nah bollocks - it’s just because the game is much more shallow than it advertised and so it makes pointless grinding and one hit kill bosses you have to flawlessly fight again and again just to pad out this lifeless game. I mean seriously? How do these giant monsters survive underground in a cave etc with no food - it makes zero sense.. It’s a pretty open world game where there’s no point to anything and nothing you do changes anything - it’s just a game for people who like collecting herbs and leveling up for hours and don’t care much the story

I looked forward to this game for years, but the late game bosses just make it completely unenjoyable. It feels like beating them has nothing to do with skill or learning, but just dumb luck. It feels like From needs to recalibrate their expectations for boss design. I'll probably just play the first 70% of the game or so going forward, but I'm not even sure if I'll stick around for that.

I wish more people would give this game a try and not hate on it to be different. just because you can kill one boss come back later when you get some runes and levels. trust me it helps a lot. can someone tell me how this game looks like dark souls 3 a game that was gray and brown everywhere; this game look nothing like that not even close. Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
