I'm not going to lie to you, it's pretty hard. That being said, the game does feel a bit grindy in the beginning, especially if giants scare you. It also lacks a simple main story, opting instead to give detail and plenty of backstory to its npc's and the world itself and making you the player figure things out. Your destiny won't be found nested in dialogue options, lengthy cutscenes, and a clear-cut path, it'll be what you make it. If you're up for the challenge, get Elden Ring and enjoy one of the greatest games out there. Expand

This game is a breath of fresh air among the convoluted and bloated open world game we typically get today. It's a masterclass in level design, enemy design, combat, RPG mechanics, exploration, dungeon crawling, and more. The game is absolutely massive in scale, and with 50 hours in I've hardly scratched the surface. The reviews are justified and the hype is real. And I'm saying this not as a fanboy, but as a first time player of FromSoftware games.

I love the frenzy and difficulty that each boss fight presents. In addition, the exploitation is very well implemented because the empty areas are reduced so that it is possible to recover your runes again.

Well let's begin with all the 10/10 reviews. I do believe it is a amazing game, and I really enjoy it, but it has its flaws.

Network code: not much improvement from dark souls 3 and in general, online is a bit hard to get into. Had one item activated that should summon me into other people their world when they got invaded but never happened.

PC build/stable FPS: It is From Software their first open world and mistakes will be made. Where I didn't have too bad of a FPS drop on pc, I know others did. And I sure had some awful frame drops myself during certain fights. In the end, it will be patched out rather sooner then later so I do not feel like it is too far of a point to judge on.

Open world: Their first open world and they nailed it. The moment you step out of the introduction area, you can go wherever you wish to go in a stunning looking world. Walk around and stumble upon a cave? Well it has some neat loot in it and worth a grab. By far the best open world game for me.

Difficulty: The game can be as difficult or easy as you make it. The first boss people seem to be having issues with is Margrit, who is indeed difficult. But it teaches you to do something else. Go out and explore, level up, get stronger weapons and then return to properly fight him.

Everything together, it is a solid 8 out of 10 for me. Not everything is perfect, but which game is? A true love letter to the fans of the dark souls series.

Well, my fears were unfounded. Going open world didn't impede this game at all, it elevated it. Almost every square inch of this game is beautiful, unique, and most importantly, full of new experiences. I feel actual joy exploring this land, when usually in an open world game I just zero in on the waypoint so I can quickly kill the enemies and finish whatever lame quest I am on.

There have been a few additions to the Souls gameplay, such as a jump button and stealth. I was surprised to see stealth, but after playing a bit I can't really imagine getting around this world without it.

I could probably babble on about this game for awhile, but really I'm just writing this review to spite the babies!

Like Zelda Botw, Elden Ring goes against this grain in that it respects the players intelligence to create their own adventure out of the sandbox world that is given. Combat while bring very similar to Dark Souls 3, is the most refined combat that we’ve seen from FromSoftware. Graphics can be seen as a weak point of this game, in that even in next gen consoles it doesn’t seem to give that wow factor as much as other games that are coming out in 2022 such as Horizon Forbidden West. Though I will say the world design of this game is so strong that it outshines the (can be) poor textures. As any Other Soulslike FromSoftware game that they’ve published, Elden Ring has Excellent Replay Value, the combat has a mastery to it as soon as you begin playing the game.It being a well executed RPG it gives the player so much variations in how they can play the game that by the time you’re finished your 1st play through, you want to begin your second journey straight away just so you experience the game as a different build instead.

Every discovery you make feels like your own and is rarely guided, with dialogue and world design that compliments the intelligence of the player, as is a staple in FromSoftware's games.

Having spent that much time in the game, I'd say I'm more or less about 60% of the way through, and I am so happy about that. I never want this game to end.

RECOMMENDATION: As I have always said for FromSoft games - your first playthrough should be solo, and unguided. This game is the pinnacle of that statement. Knowing where everything is from guides kills the exploration and discovery aspect of the game somewhat.

Needed to add my rating on XSX as I have played it on both PS5 and XSX and I really hope they can patch the technical issues we seem to be having on Xbox. It's such a great game and I really want to be able to join friends on Xbox to play more but I will wait for future patches.

This game is amazing! Absolutely phenomenal work by the devs! Great job FromSoft! Yes it is challenging but that's what makes it worth the time put into it. Love the quality of life additions such as the fast travel while roaming around the map. The different possible builds already have me wanting to replay with different abilities!

I played this game for about 7 hours last night and I agree, it sucks. On my Xbox Series S it stutters at about 30 fps which is not what you expect from a “masterpiece” released in 2022. The “open world” is just a large area with lots of enemies. There are no towns or NPC’s to talk to besides a few merchants. I think I found one side quest. There are no towns or NPC’s to talk to besides a few merchants. I think I found one side quest. No matter what direction you go in the difficulty is high which forces you to grind, an rpg quality that should have been put to bed with 90’s SNES RPG titles.
The combat system is serviceable but it’s not enough to get past its other faults. Unfortunately reviews are filled with fanboys of the series and people that jump on the “masterpiece” bandwagon.
And before anyone comes out and says, "lmao you're not a TRUE SOULS REDDIT GAMERLORD", I have to ask you what the appeal of these games are?
There's no plot in sight, aside from the premise of reassembling the McGuffin Ring to save the world. The game expects you to follow a linear path of progression for the first 2 hours without even so much as a waypoint, so you're just left to die to mobs over and over until you get sick of it and check a walkthrough.
I can play and enjoy hard games, I ran through Doom Eternal on Ultra Nightmare and had a lot of fun with DMC 5 on Dante Must Die. The problem I have isn't that the game is hard, it's too damn convoluted. I'm not getting kicked down because I mistimed a dash or didn't have my combos down, but because the game straight up doesn't tell you what it wants.
The simple fact is that most gamers are willing to put in the hours to master a difficult game so long as they're having fun. People invested years into games like Command and Conquer or Age of Empires because the games were enthralling, the difficulty is just a means to an end. But if a player is getting punished by a dev that thinks trial and error is compelling gameplay, the I'll call it quits. There is no pride for me in beating a game that is meant to be beaten, or solving a puzzle that was meant to be solved. No matter how hard they are, the fun is what takes precedent.
And if trying and guessing to stay on the linear path in an "Open World game" is fun for you, then go ahead. But I'm not regretting my refund.
That's not even talking about the atrocious performance and terrible optimization. Holy **** why does this game run so bad?! The open world is entirely barren with no crowds, NPCs, traffic or large buildings to render. The thing looks almost as barren as the Shadow of the Colossus, and somehow runs 20x worse than that game does on next generation hardware!
    How is this OK?

Ignore the 'bad graphics" cry babies. If graphics were everything then most of the best games ever made would never exist. Playability and replayability are great. One of the few games out there worth the full price.

Honestly, first I must say that if you aren't a fan of Dark Souls and/or any previous FromSoftware game this is not going to change your mind.

With that out of the way, let's get down to it. This game is "bare" because it wants to give you a sense of exploration. Yes, minimaps are cool, yes quest trackers are good to have, but where's the mystery if every single thing has big arrows pointed at them? The lore is there for people that want to search, but you really have to do some digging to figure things out. Though to be fair the story is not anything different, it's been the same in all games. You're some kind of chosen one that keeps coming back to life and you have to kill some gods to become the next ruler. Good enough for me let's go kick some ass, but there's still a huge world to explore, with plenty of side dungeons/bosses if you want to take a break from the main path.

Which leads to combat, which has always been the best thing in all of the FromSoftware games. The amount of builds you can create is insane, and with new features and mechanics you can pretty much make any build viable. Want do smash things with giant hammers or swords? Go for it. Want to slice and dice with knives and daggers? Take a stab at it. Wanna stand far away and blast enemies with fireballs and magic missiles? Cast away your doubts and blast away your foes. Hell there's even a video of someone playing as Darth Maul, double-blading every enemy in their path.

The visuals are decent, nothing mind blowing but in this day and age it's really hard to improve upon graphics. Even still, the art direction and style carry the game tenfold, so while the graphics aren't amazing you will still be in awe at how great the world looks. I'm constantly panning the camera 360 degrees just to take in all the visuals and I am constantly in awe of it all.

Now to answer the biggest question on everybody's mind: how difficult is it? You really want to know? It's brutal. Maddening. It will make you rage with anger and weep with sorrow. You will cry for mommy and dial 911 for emergency help simultaneously. Your anus will hurt from the relentless 24/7 pounding it gives you. You will fail more than you succeed, but when you do succeed, and rest assured you will, you will feel like the god you are aiming to by the end of the game. But wait, there's more. Tired of getting your ass handed to you for the millionth time? FRET NOT YOUNG TARNISHED! You can summon other players to assist you with bosses meaning you don't have to worry about being stuck for too long.

Overall the game is definitely a blast. I'm playing on the Xbox One X and I have not run into too many technical issues. Yes some FPS drops here and there but no crashing and no fight hindering slow downs during bosses either. The only reason it's a not a 10/10 is because the story is basically rehashed. Well, that and for a game to deserve a 10 it really does need to be superb while also bringing something new to the table. Elden Ring doesn't exactly bring anything new to the table but it definitely improves on the old formula. It's kinda like if your favorite drink is Mountain Dew and your favorite fruit is cherry and they just released Code Red. Except it can kill you twice before you even take your first sip. Yeah, something like that.

Booted this game up thought it looked okay, kind of like an old 360 game, but whatever. Must be a good story or something.

Speaking of story I guess other than the one eyed girl and the crappy cutscene there isn't really one. Figured since it had the Game of Thrones writer on it it may be cool, but I guess this is the reason why everyone hates the damned show now. He must not be very good, probably another SJW propped up by the hollywood elites.

Dodge mechanics are pretty clunky and don't seem to work quite right.. Seems like your character's hit box is larger than Nancy Pelosi's slush fund. Clipping seems to guarantee that the enemies kill you through walls and rocks and other crap, but you never seem to go through them. I presume it's some intentional feature to create a faux sense of challenge to the game. The alternative is that the programmers lack the technical wherewithal to pull of what they're striving for. Now that I think on that though it's probably the latter with the number of bugs this game has. Frame rate drops are pretty harsh and consistently occur on boss encounters.

Maybe it would have been a cool game if the story was any interesting or if the developers were worth a lick, but they seem to be reaching for the stars when they can't even grab the dirt off the floor very well. Play God of War any of them and hard if you wanna play a real good game. I'll be taking this back to gamestop and telling them the damned thing is broken to get my money back because it's just awful.

There's no checklist simulator here, just an open world full of mystery and wonder. So many hidden places you'll find for the first time on your third playthrough. It's truly incredible seeing a dev team trust the player as far too often games are too proud of their work, so they feel the need to drag you to every place on the map, but elden ring wants you to discover the magic of this world on your own.. this is your journey, your path to cut, this is your world.

Story is virtually non-existent they were happier than hell to plug George R R Martin's name all over the marketing materials, but I'm not sure what he did. About as much work as he does on his own series I'd surmise, which is NOTHING. You get what amounts to lore dumps on scrolls and flavor text on items passing as a "story." There's no major narrative structure.

The "revolutionary" open world is hollow, lifeless, and boring. I've seen more intriguing open worlds in PS3 games. Speaking of PS3 games that's basically what you're getting here in the visuals department. I guess the AAA industry is so exhausted from bribing publishers and youtubers to give them good scores they don't even bother with the graphics anymore. Art direction is however stunning, seems to be where they spent most of their time.

Gameplay is seriously bogged down by numerous bugs and technical issues. Frame rate drops, save crashing, stuttering, janky animations, clipping errors, you name it this game has it. I guess all the 10/10 reviews are based on where the game will be in 2 years once they fix the bugs? That's some optimism for you!

The game rewards you every time you venture off the main path and not by giving you some collectibles like in other open world games but with a new weapon, skill, spell, armor or talisman that will help maybe help your current build or is even worth building towards. The sense of progression you get this way is incomparable to other open world games or rpgs. I started out as a naked guy with a stick, went on to be a knight with a bastard sword and shield and now am a powerful scythe wielding sorcerer using the power of dragons and lightning to destroy my enemies.

I can understand some people that got drawn in by the BOTW comparisons are having trouble with the combat but it‘s definitely not too hard if you‘re willing to think a little bit about how to approach boss fights. The summons definitely help a lot and sometimes even make the game feel too easy for a fromsoft game.

My impressions after about 15 hours of gameplay:
First of all, an open world game should offer the user as much interaction with the world as possible (i.e. RDR2). Apart from killing the bad guys, there is little interaction. The NPCs are scarce (where is everybody)? It's 95% enemies. Sure, you can collect stuff but that doesn't make this world a more interactive place.

Then, there is no real story. There is no substantial narrative. I'm not saying that a game should take you by the hand and lead you from one quest to the next, but the total lack of any guidance feels like there is no story at all (apart from killing everybody of course). I have no idea about the involvement of George R.R. Martin, but after 15 hours the scenario eludes me.
Sure the aesthetics of the game are fantastic, the imagery is breathtaking, but apart from that it feels like you are playing a bad version of Mortal Combat (because you only have a couple of moves and the enemies have about 100) disguised as a R.P.G.

While this is not that bad considering the character models and some environments look like early ps4 it’s disappointing. Multiplayer could be phenomenal but is bogged down by bad design choices. One example is walls that forces you to disband group at region zones and have your friends try to get to the point where you’re at alone just so you can progress after you get past the wall. Others include mounts and summons not working. These two features are so core to the single player experience that it is baffling that they couldn’t optimize their game enough to have them included. There is a lot to like about this game and contrary to popular opinion an 8 is a worth while experience so give it a try. Expand

Nostalgia. It's big business now. Seems like everyone is cashing in on 80's and 90's kids childhoods. But why? Why are people willing to pay money for something old and possibly obsolete? Why are people willing to pay money for something old and possibly obsolete? The simple answer is bliss. That exhilaration of feeling something new, The unlimited Thrill of receiving a reword for achieving what felt like an imposable goal that only a child can know. The first time you were excited and scared at the same time, The friendships...friendships before drama, when the only thing required to be friends was that you were all young and ignorant of an adult world. As we know being an adult isn't nearly as exciting and is rarely fun. So of course people (like me) in there 30's 40's and 50's will pay cash for a chance at feeling that bliss, if only for a single second, if only one more time.

Video games were my very first love. Karate Kid on the NES is the first game I remember playing. And it called to me. The colors racing by, the thrill of surviving one more screen as I scrolled right kicking and punching. Then at the local arcade it was WWF Wrestlefest and Afterburner that gave me that same thrill, That sense of pure bliss. Other games made me feel that way over the years. But it came fewer and farther between as I got older. And it wasn't just games feel this way. It was going to a new friends house for the first time, playing in a construction area at night, riding my first wheelie on my bike, my first ollie, exploring abandoned houses with my friends. when we were kids it was pure bliss all the time.

As life carries on, there are still wonders. the first time being intimate with someone, falling in love, your first promotion at work. But for most of us our day to day life's have become the status quo, go to work, be a good parent, and a good spouse. But no matter how good your life turns out, for a lot of us there will always be a longing for that bliss. That feeling of discovery we had so many years ago.

Eldon Ring absolutely makes me feel that way again. I cant exactly say why. I never liked any of the other games made by FROM software. In fact I disliked them. But this game has kept me on the edge of my seat for the 30 hours I've put into it. I'm glued to my TV in a way that I haven't been for years. My heart races, and my adrenaline has been off the charts! Not just the game either, I've had my laptop In front of me the whole time, on forums, wiki's, and watching YouTube videos. Its the most "fun" I've had as long as I can remember. Around every corner is something new and exciting, every cave, Ruin, or castle is just absolutely filled with discovery. The constant fear of losing your progressions is ever looming giving this game that fear and excitement feeling from my youth. There is nothing like discovering an area with no messages anywhere and knowing you might be the first player to ever find this place. It's constant exhilaration.

I could get into the mechanics, the graphics, what features the game has or lacks. But I wont. I could talk about the length of the game. But I also wont, Because for me it doesn't matter. Im 30 hours in and if the game ended now, or lasted another 100 hours I would consider it the greatest game ever made. What I do care about is how this game makes me feel. And it makes me feel like a kid again. Not for a second, but for hours. I never thought I would feel these kinds of emotions again. And for that I am so thankful.

I usually dont write reviews, But I had to let someone somewhere know how amazing this game is. In my opinion this game is without a doubt the G.O.A.T..

Love it very challenging just like any action rpg game and hypixel skyblock. The open world is just diverse with different bosses with different types of attack to learn and overcome. The only flaw is the performance where it keeps dropping in demanding situation ever on series x|s and ps5. Overall best game for this type of audience/gamers

An excellent soulslike with a much bigger world and giant creatures! We have all the familiar ingredients in Demon Souls, Dark Souls Trilogy, Bloodborne and Sekiro, but now with some additional abilities including mount to navigate an open world.

Good game, after 20 hours of play time I can confirm that Elden ring is just as good if not better then the previous souls games the only problems I had are minor framedorps and small visual glitiches

Poorly optimized and riddled with bugs. Don't buy the hype from the same people who told you Cyberpunk was a 10/10 masterpiece. Just another generic FromSoftware game.

Elden ring is a good game but it turns out that it is more of the same, the same difficulty, the same gameplay, simply its novelty is that it is an open world, it is more of the same when it comes to an old graphics engine. How could have almost perfect grades? I just don't get it, it's full of bugs, pop up, fog, etc. Those who rated it forgave all this just like that. That does not mean that repeating the formula gives you many hours of exploration and why not? of frustration. In general it is a very inflated game by the media, it is not even remotely what they wanted to make it seem. It is not perfect, it is not open to all, where is the objectivity? It's a shame that they behave like this. Expand

Best game Fromsoft has ever put out, hands down. It does have frame drops but if you have a VRR monitor it'll help a ton until a patch is out (hopefully). It can be a rough go for those not used to this style of a game but my advice is to not give up, if you get stuck on a boss or a big enemy maybe explore the world more, level up and try again. If you have a friend, get them to help you out or use summoning spirit's! Watch some tutorials on YouTube, the game doesn't give you much info on mechanics and tips. You will die, a lot. You will lose souls..... I mean runes, hopefully not a lot but it will happen. I've learned after playing all the Souls games, you roll with the punches, laugh it off and have fun! I love the visuals, though they have some rough edges, the sounds is great and the gameplay is fantastic once you understand it. It's a unique experience gamers should try and dive deeper cause it only gets better with time. About 55 hours in and I feel like there's so much more to discover. Expand

I didn't realize there was a cult following and fan-worship over how difficult this developer makes their games-- something I find stupid.

I had not played Dark Souls or anything else in Miyazaki's catalogue and bought the game because I love open-world RPG's and it has incredible reviews. I put 3 hours without much progression and kept getting killed. Looting system leaves much to be

What I didn't assume is there would be no difficulty settings, but as mentioned, I was not familiar with the DS series or the developer.

My favorite part about the genre is being able to cater the experience to how casual you want the gameplay to be, given these games tend to be so story-rich. Unfortunately I didn't have the patience for the difficulty in order to enjoy GRRM's involvement.

If, like me, you have played this series since Demon's Souls, you will realise Elden Ring is Dark Souls 4. Or Demon's Souls 2 - It doesn't really matter at this point.

Other than the *slightly* more open world structure (the 'Souls series was always somewhat open in structure) and Torrent the goathorse, everything is exactly the same as all the previous games, including elements from Bloodborne and Sekiro.

    Same player classes and animations?
Same enemy design, including enemy types/classes?
Same pseudo-mediaeval world, with lonely atmosphere?
    Same dead-eyed, hollow-voiced NPCs?
    Same controls and combat system?
Same telling of the opaque story and world lore through item descriptions?
    Same, boring, grindy progression system?
    Same die-and-die-again repetitive gameplay?
Enroaching feeling that you are wasting your life playing updates to the same game released well over a decade ago?

'Yes' to all of the above.

Mashing together your previous 4 games and adding a horse is in no way innovative or good, by any metric. This is one of the laziest 'masterpieces' I have ever seen.

It used to be fun, but its just the same bland thing over and over again.

Utterly sickening - i hope you like cake. And then more cake. After a palate cleanser of cake. All washed down with a warm glass of cake, chewed up and regurgitated into a pint glass by Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
