Just if you are new just give it sometime to get used to it and I promise once you get a hang of the movement’s and fighting controls it’s rewarding. But I have put in over 200 hours in this game and still find new stuff all the time. But this game deserves the praise the best I’ve ever played. Expand

I finally understood the magical game hiding behind the difficulty mask. I was immersed in the breathtaking graphics, the complex lore, and the grinding of armaments. But be warned; and this is a bit of a hot take. The game only starts to be fun after you beat the first story boss. Even though I am very far from completing the game, I can confidently say that I am extremely happy and satisfied with my purchase of Elden Ring Expand

It offers a piece of equipment but then tells you it's not useful in its current form. Young S/W developers with egos try to develop a game that beats the player. 1st review I write here, 1st souls game. This has to be a 10. Even if its not your style of game one has to admire the sheer scope and game design. Finally a recent game respecting your intelligence and time. No bloat, no railed experiences, 70h in and still hungry! Performance would make it a 9.5 but I’m countering the 0s, PLEASE don’t let those reviews fool you, this game is special

But now, I am about only 26 hours in, 33rd level Samurai.. Man, I haven’t played better balanced open world game ever - it is simply art and so much to be unfold in front of me. There probably is story (probably like it was in Diablo II back than), but I didn’t really need to follow anything, I am just discovering this massive highly occupied world, meeting these unique foes, some of them bosses, some of them over my level - even harder than bosses, so opening this map and going elsewhere discovering something new. Along the journey realising, there were very few games that got stocked in my memories as a such a enjoyment as this one and we are really going to past at start of the 90s.. There is no doubt it is GOTY of 2022, this game right now aspires to be one of the greatest since Diablo II - if you loved that one, this one is must. If You loved Sekiro, this one is must. Revolutionary title, that got far beyond of the competition. We can all speak about Horizon, we all know, that Starfield or God of War probably will be great, but at the same time we know what previous titles from these studios were, gameplay never been the first thing - not in the way predecessors of the Elden Ring were - and gameplay is the thing for me, reason I wanna play. Don’t get me wrong, I love to watch, but I have HBO max, Netflix and etc for this. If we compare this game to Witcher 3, which is another great game, full of cutscenes, first try to openworld and it was just great - I really enjoyed it, but longer I played, interest were lower, story was interesting, but I just got in this feeling that every fight is same, no challange, after 15 hours of play and that is the way Witcher I remember Expand

    A little Sneak:
    gameplay

    The heart at the end.

    a) Territories

I could rave all day about the diversity of the individual areas. There is so much to explore. Caelid, decomposed by rot, Limgrave as an open landscape with many castles and towers, Liurnia with a grandiose academy or the beautiful city of Leyndell. This is just part of the many areas to explore. The areas are a big part of the incessantly generating motivation.

It's unbelievable that Fromsoft managed to establish their level structure, the clear recognition value even in an open world that is so big. Despite the new world, you always feel at home and always try to compare some sections, places, etc. with previous parts or are reminded of them.

The drawn map is a dream. You don't have question marks everywhere, but prominent spots on the map where you decide for yourself: something could be there. From the drawing, there could be something there. Most of the time you are simply rewarded for your curiosity and basically get useful things.

Secret doors, at some point there are a lot of them, are simply part of it and I like this uncertainty that you always have at Fromsoft because you don't want to miss anything. You can always find something somewhere, whether it's backtracking or unlocking a shortcut. The top of it is that in the last few hours I've discovered so many more areas and because of that I've been able to kill a lot of bosses. Not only the boss kill but also finding an area gives you so much joy at Fromsoft.

    b) bosses

Big or small, optional or story boss, I thought so many were terrific. Radahn, Malenia, just to name two really great fights, show what boss gameplay can do. I especially liked Malenia, who couldn't supplant my favorite boss, Sister Friede. Although it is now the undisputed boss with the most tries for me, that never spoiled the fight for me.

I also liked the multitude of optional bosses. But the recycling bothered me a bit, especially e.g. the black cavalry riders, who were always ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL, was much too easy for me. The bosses, which then turn into trash mobs, are terrific and typically fromsoft, and they often made me sweat.

The game is also getting more and more difficult, especially the last three areas are really tough. The game also gives you various options to act with different bosses (e.g. Mohg).

Ultimately, the fat bosses also give you armor or weapons, and here too you have to make decisions and choose carefully.

    c) fight

Whether magician, two-handed warrior or double katana samurai. There is so much possibility to change your character in Elden Ring, even during the game. I played with katanas for a long time, but also tried different weapons again and again. Later I even trained in faith and prepared myself with invocations before every fight. Halberds, fist weapons, daggers, swords, shields, bows, whips and much more. The Elden Ring arsenal is vast and only a small part of the greater whole. All weapons can be enhanced in various ways. Frost & Bleed? YES. Fire? YES flash? YES. Elden Ring gives you a kit and you can totally lose yourself in it in a positive way.

Talismans replace the rings and only expand the hero's repertoire even more. There are also consumables and a crafting system. Especially the crafting shows Fromsoft's strength: If you read through here, if you look for the books together, then you will be given really important and good opportunities to strengthen your character. Gathering resources was never annoying, just well integrated. Each resource has its own look and at some point you also know what the item is that you collected there. It's not one size fits all, it doesn't all look the same.

In addition to the possibility of PvE co-op NPCs or online partners, you can also summon different spirits. A great feature, but I only used it more often when clearing warehouses. For almost all bosses I personally left them out. Among them there are also really cool items with great figures.

I finally used PvP and co-op a lot. I've helped people with Mohg so much because there were just so many runes for it, which gave me the opportunity to buy a lot of crafting stones to try out more weapons. PvP went much better than in the other parts (fewer lagging opponents) but there are already a lot of brutally strong meta builds here.

I played with bleeding a lot.

    Conclusion

10/10 ELDEN LORDS. I love the game and it has climbed the Fromsoft throne for me. My beloved Dark Souls III has been supplanted and in my eyes it deserves Elden Ring. I had 107 hours (+15 with my magician) of constant fun, going through a lot of emotions and just a really good experience.

The exploration is fun and big.
The art work and the graphics are awesome. Especially playing this on an Xbox Series S.
The storyline makes you want to play more.
And the best part, the rewards you get for defeating a boss, after being defeated over 100 times.

Yes there are some little frame drops here and there, to be honest I hardly notice them that much.
And yes the bosses are ridiculously difficult, but that is what to be expected from FromSoftware games. But they give you the option to always run away, level up and fight the bosses again.

This game easily is a 10/10 for me and I have to say it feels like the game of the year. Without a doubt this game is worth buying.

I’ve rescued the Milky way from fearsome reapers, liberated the nuclear wasteland, stolen thousands of cars, liberated tropical islands, won countless Stanley cups and to boot l, a few world cups. I’ve planned and built cities and I’ve protected man kind in the name if our God emperor! Ive played over 200 hours of Elden ring on my Series X , not nearly as many as I’ve spent on Dark souls one, two or three. But i predict this game will be one of the greats. One of those you keep coming back to. I truly have loved every moment of it. The open world keeps distracting you, leading you astray from your true quest. Visually stunning vistas and alluring lore that keeps you hooked on lorevids on Youtube is accompanied by stellar fighting mechanics and that ever present feeling of joy and fear at the same time. You know the one, where you never know whats next on the epic journey. Bossfights in line with what we’ve come to expect when it comes to FROM, secret and rare items, dragons, fire, magic, stellar soundtrack and of course..Patches!
This game has earned a spot in my all time top ten of games. It is a few patches from top five. (Software updates, that is ;). )

Those From Software “lifehacks” gone too far – now You’re not even forced to talk to NPC, to get a map icon info who he is…for example it completely ruined first encounter with Blaidd.
Game is vast and You’re hyped at the beginning – first area (Limgrave) has the best environmental structure (dragon, dungeons, mini-boss, big cart, camp).
Landscape is immersive and for the moment I was feeling epic adventure vibe.
Sadly, this bait for beta access reviewers is going down very fast – too big and empty, stretched without common sense, not rewarding for your time invested…
Dragons are too easy, quests are too complicated for open world, crafting unnecessary (you can’t craft weapons nor armors), legendary weapons are easier to upgrade than normal, dungeons too small, framerate at 35-50 fps, pop-in everywhere, unbalanced weapons (colossal zweihander damage and stagger equal to claymore…), etc…
    After 150 hours I’m bored. It’s a promise unfullfiled.
Elden Ring is very overrated and not a masterpiece.
From Software – You can’t put souls series into mainstream.
You sell 12M copies but people are angry and this 7,5 Metacritic rating is VERY accurate.

With this open world concept, the entire "souls" genre changes, leaving the difficulty scaling up to the players. You can try to tackle the bosses head on, doing the old school masochist style marathon to the final boss, or you can run around and explore, expand your arsenal with weapons and spells and even level up as you please, before returning to the "now very easy" headaches known as bosses.

That being said instead of praising the game I will point out my only real problem with the game. Simply put, the game is extremely unintuitive, this can be seen in the way lock-ons work, as well as in navigating the menus. This is nowhere more apparent than in the quest design, and I absolutely adore the open ended quest design, however there are a lot of times when you are given a quest unexpectedly, and then must remember a name or location with no way to repeat dialog. It's frustrating at times but the rest of the game completely sweeps away this frustration. TLDR: The HUD and Menus are bad, and the quest design is annoying Expand

I've enjoyed FromSoftware games in the past but never to this level, each hour of play is rewarded with awesome weapons, unlockable items, enemies, and jaw dropping landscapes. There are bug fixes needed, and it appears that they are being handled in a timely manner, and that is why for me this has been a close to perfect experience. Expand

So frustrating. I raged quit tonight after putting in over 100 hours. Not even due to a boss fight. The game is unbalanced in its difficulty. This game is for a tiny subset of gamers. I have a stressful job, I look to games to blow off steam and this game achieved the opposite. I don't even feel accomplished after defeating a boss, just relief. Why would anyone subject themselves to this?

I've registered on MetaCritic only to give a fair review for PC version. This game is so bad. An indie game with such basic issues would receive 0 points, so this is how much I give it. Bad controls, outdated graphics, input delays. Lacks concealed as "being hard to play", and strangely high critics reviews.

I really love this game, the way it tells its story, the bosses design, the only thing I don’t like so much it’s the necessity to spend a lot of time to be able to have a good level to defeat a boos at the beginning of the game, but I know this is how you play a Souls game, so it’s fine!

I dont like it too much. Neither aesthetics, nor balance, fights, story and this huge empty world. It requires very much time for exploring and game rewards your exploration with very little of something. Sekiro is like million times better. I also think that the dialogue and story elements are too sparse to make a cohesive feeling story. However, it’s a fantastic and well designed open world. The enemies are original and imaginative. I can see why people think they’re cut and paste, but that’s the point of the souls borne games. You learn the patterns and apply your style to each enemy as they present themselves. It has an original feel, although it’s in the dark souls format. No micro transactions or crowbarred in multiplayer. It’s a genuine, honest to god single player experience. It’s got no cynical angles to it. The grind is real but balanced.

Just don’t expect it to hold your hand!

The first experience is incredibly memorable and the main bosses are amazing, the lore is nothing to talk about, although I think it's very similar to Dark Souls and lacks a bit of originality. The problem is that there comes a point, more precisely in the second half of the game, that it gets very repetitive, the optional bosses are very forgettable, the boss repetition is ridiculously annoying and the game balance is so unstable to the point that you are OP without nor make effort, spoiling the Experience. The soundtrack is far inferior to past games, especially if we compare it to Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne, you can count on your fingers which ones are really memorable and incredible. The exploration of the world itself is phenomenal and intuitive, it's really a revolution of the open world system, but unfortunately that's only true for the first time playing, making the game have very little replay factor, as you've already seen all the new exploration. In short, the game is amazing and extremely fun and addictive, it has a lot of successes but it also has a lot of flaws. For FromSoftware's first open world game, I'd say they are to be congratulated, they improved a lot from the other games, but honestly it could have been better. If they had more creativity and time, the game would be immensely more memorable and most of the game's serious flaws would be minimized. Overall, it's an unforgettable game on your first playthrough and it's really worth it, it's not quite a masterpiece as many have said, for me it's basically an open world Dark Souls 4, but it's worth the investment, especially nowadays where the market of Videogames only cares about money and quantity, while FromSoftware cares more about the artistic factor and quality in their games. - forced into pvp just to play with friends. Stupid, lazy, and bordering on straight up jerkdom

    (1) No true local multiplayer. A family needs TWO xbox units & TWO disks to play what I should be able with one each. It borders on criminal negligence in today's game market. Period.
    (2) First From Software game. To say the survival learning curve is hideous is a laugh. You die over and over for no reason other than developers thinking it's FUN for professional people with families wanting to relax playing a video game. There's no such luck with this title. I understand learning a game and getting better skill, but there is no margin for error for simple mistakes. This is coming from someone who killed Margit at lvl 23 as an Astrologer...farmed the meteorite staff etc....I researched. I improved skill. Still the learning curve is STEEP and unnecessarily harsh. Think of the average player not the try hards or make tiers like so many other games do to fix it.
    (3) Forcing me to play multiplayer in today's gaming world when I don't want to adds to my frustration. So I have to have two systems and two disks to play the game with family already and NOW you force us to play pvp vs randoms if we try to play with help. It doesn't make the game fun for those that don't want pvp. Just stop it. It borders on being jerks to your player base. It's lazy. Make a separate pvp system without forcing us to comply with it.

Fix these three issues and my rating goes to a 9.

Pros: The game is absolutely huge. The world Is amazing to explore and almost every nook and crannie holds something to find or discover. Boss fights are epic but can't get a little frustrating if you play certain classes. The character building /level up system is pretty good as well.

Cons: The story is very hard to follow as you are told something once and you have no record of anything you were told so if you forgot something you're pretty much clueless unless you look it up online. Same goes for the hidden sidequest throughout the game. It's one of the most poorly constructed quest /side mission implementation I've ever seen in any game. The enemies that are supposed to be trash mobs running around the open world are sometimes harder than the main bosses which is ridiculous on its own.

Recap. All in all it is a good game If you want to randomly run around the amazing open world and kill stuff with no rhyme or reason or any way to look back to see what npc's have told you along the way. If you are into story or dialog this is definitely not a game for you.

The open world in Elden Ring is done better than most open world games today. That's what's considered "Revolutionary". They kept the souls-like feel despite going open-world which is more than what most game devs are able to do with their games when going in that direction. The way they reuse assets in this game is done properly. The world isn't littered with garbage and utterly useless items making the game feel repetitive (*cough cough Ubisoft games). Some of the bosses you fight early in the game become tough regular enemies later in the game making you as the player feel stronger and accomplished with the knowledge of how to defeat such enemies. The catacombs/dungeons are structured in a way that feel the same but each have their own set of enemies, traps, secrets, rewards and items. There's a reason to go into a specific dungeon because you may want that talisman, weapon, or ash. The recycling of assets in Elden Ring is done in a way that other developers should look at as an example of how to make a game feel fresh for 100 hours. The only other game that has done this well that I've played is Batman Arkham Knight

I wouldn't call the combat boring in any way even if you've been playing Souls games from the beginning. I mean, maybe you're just bored of it? I'm not a souls veteran by any means but I have played Souls 1, Sekiro and now this game. There is a clear difference in scale and choices in Elden Ring. The amount of different builds you can design lets the player choose from literally 50+ options of how to play the game. You can look up builds on youtube as there are many literally just making builds for this game. I think this was FromSoft's way of adding more variety but it may have also added an "easy mode" as there are some builds/weapons that are considered by the community OP and an easy way of running through Elden Ring. (ie. Moonveil, Magic, etc)

Overall, I highly recommend this game to any gamer. It is still difficult compared to your average RPG but will be worth the time and effort if you stick through it.

It is really fun to just explore around conquering bosses as you come across them. There are hidden secrets everywhere, it doesn't feel like any of the space is wasted like in so many open world games. It does have some problems though. The first problem is that there is no quest interface whatsoever. There are certainly quests, just no way to keep track of them without doing it manually (eg. pen and paper) or the more realistic solution: just google everything. The 2nd big issue is that co-op is just backwards. With most games with jump-in co-op you would ask for help, and people answer. In this game, people have to volunteer to help and then wait around for someone to ask for it. If you want to just co-op the entire game with friends, well you can't, it doesn't work that way. Co-op ends as soon as a player dies or a boss does and you have to set it up all over again. Definitely could have been done better. Expand

Repetitive, the most efficient way to play is to find the weapon with the most damage and do a jumping attack, pvp is lousy unless you like to be ganked by 2-3 people and if by some miracle you win the rewards are not worth it, in late game bosses are very unfair, decent game but Sekiro has better combat, Bloodborne better story.

This game is very overrated. its not a bad game but its not a great one either. There is no story, IF you are expecting a Horizon: Zero Dawn story where the characters are engaging then look elsewhere. The combat is bad and most of the enemies are frustrating. The world is huge but what's the point if most of the world is empty. If you are expecting an rpg with towns like elder scrolls then you will be disappointment.

I dont see how so many critics are giving this game perfect scores. You will spend a lot of hours grinding to level up and your character will still be weak. I don't see the point in leveling up my health by 50 levels and I can still die in 3 hits. This game is a 7 at best. This is my first souls game and i would probably never play another game from this developer. RPGs are some of my favorite games but i never been so frustrated from playing one.

The only time I've ever even considered giving a game a perfect 10/10. The perfect mix of exploration, challenge, Boss Fights, Lore, amazing sound and music and Out-right fun.

This game is not for people who want their hands held, or are hell bent on a linear game play style. Don't go into this if you're expecting another Skyrim, it will teach you a brutal lesson, that only gets more

This game is not for people who want their hands held, or are hell bent on a linear game play style. Don't go into this if you're expecting another Skyrim, it will teach you a brutal lesson, that only gets more and more brutal, as seen by many reviews. Just scroll through and most scores under 9 will be complaining about a lack of direction, or too much difficulty in a game that's about discovery and choreography, more than it is grinding to be over-leveled, which seems to be something people can't understand, very curious.

The game that breaks the mold and managed to create what i believe is the greatest souls game, and perhaps one of the greatest games of all time! In this case, most bad reviews can be seen as a good way to feel better about your own gameplay experience!

I liked the previous souls games and this one is the best so far. The world is fun to explore and looks great. The difficulty seems a bit more doable and bosses are varied. Definitely check this out if you like other from software games but this will probably not change you didn’t like previous instances.

I'll give it a ten once the game is well optimized, because I prefer smooth 60 fps gameplay without ray tracing and no 4K to 30 fps and 4K gameplay. The performance mode needs to be reviewed, you can do without a drop in resolution or detail to have a game at 60 fps anyway, make an effort for the performance mode.

Yes this is a beautiful game but it is really made to be a single player game. Also button inputs do not register they are delayed, there is also camera lock issues as well. Sorry but this is my opinion, its kinda harsh but the game i thought i was gonna get to play wasn't what i saw in leading up to the hype. Expand

Love this game. There is a ton of build diversity and plenty of weapons or spells that you can use. You’re not limited to using the “best” weapons and builds. There are a few difficulty spikes when the enemies in a new area get a lot stronger, but if you just explore the world you should be able to level up easily. This game has a lot to do and it never felt like I was grinding. ThereLove this game. There is a ton of build diversity and plenty of weapons or spells that you can use. Elden Ring has some great attributes... It looks nice, there is a lot to explore and discover, etc... But the reason I can't give it more than 6/10 is because... Well... It isnt fun. To get anywhere you have to grind and repeat over and over and over and over. I don't think I've ever put the game down whilst feeling satisfied. I usually quit feeling irritated or bored to death. There is a fine line between difficult and dumb/irritating. I'm a big Metroid fan, so hard games arent usually an issue. But this game just makes itself hard for the sake of it. It's not fun, it's just boring. The controls arent responsive enough imo to warrant the difficulty. I'm level 155 and the game goes from killing soliders with one hit to getting my ass handed to me in two hits by the same soldiers 2 minutes later. In summary, the game isnt fun. It's tedious Expand

Elden Ring is a totally average game. Don't believe the trolls and the toxic community talk. Many people consider From Software to be the originator of the Souls genre. It actually has its origins in Nihon Falcom. Therefore, according to them, Miyazaki is a messiah. However, Miyazaki and the Souls team is still making the same mistakes.

Objective problems: -Hitboxes are not good.

It actually has its origins in Nihon Falcom. Therefore, according to them, Miyazaki is a messiah. However, Miyazaki and the Souls team is still making the same mistakes.

    Objective problems:

-Hitboxes are not good. There are times when it reminds me of the DS2.
-Boss designs are very unbalanced. They didn't really work well with many bosses.
-The game gets too repetitive. Open world exploration is nice, but it gets boring quickly.
-There seems to be a lot of items, but in the end, a few items are the most useful. The game forces you for make to broken builds. Because some boss designs require it. All builds look alike. For example, more than half of even PvP uses blood builds.
-Optimization is still not fixed and every update is getting worse.
-Spells are powerful. Playing spell builds are more advantageous in many ways.
-Camera angles are not good. It really causes trouble. When the number of enemies is high, you cannot control field of view.
-Lore quality is definitely a controversial topic. However, it has the same lore in other Souls games. Only their names have changed. George R. R. Martin is just PR work.
-Enemies are just based on nonstop spawn attacks with endless stamina as like most of bosses.
-Many of the bosses repeat themselves. Most bosses are either the same or reskin version.
-The hit feeling is not good. Especially the bosses don't even react properly to your attacks.
-It has a toxic and cancerous player base.
-Artificial intelligence problems. A real disaster.
-It is a headache for some attacks in the game to pass through objects.

    Conclusion:

This game is not a masterpiece. Not on a new ip. It's just Dark Souls 4 with open world.

Full disclosure, I am a fairly big fan of the Dark Souls series of games and have been playing Souls games for nearly a decade now; so take that into consideration. With that out of the way, I would like to say that Elden Ring is simply incredible. I have not experienced a newly released RPG that has enthralled me this much with its world and gameplay since Fallout 4 - back in 2015. With that out of the way, I would like to say that Elden Ring is simply incredible. I have not experienced a newly released RPG that has enthralled me this much with its world and gameplay since Fallout 4 - back in 2015. The diversity in builds and play styles, the humongous amount of interesting dungeons and environments, the plentiful and awesome loot, and of course the difficult but very fun to fight enemies and bosses - all of these elements are done very, very well in Elden Ring. There are some technical problems here and there, mainly with the frame rate and some controller delay - but this will not destroy the awesome experience. As a send off I want to say this, Elden Ring is not short and it does not hold your hand, this could seem overwhelming to some gamers, but I want to say that Elden Ring hardly ever felt like a chore. While Elden Ring is a long game, it's so open and has so much in it that I hardly felt like I was spending too much time playing it. Even if you are crunched for time from work or school, I still would highly recommend trying out this awesome game. Expand

Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
