I am aiming to give a fair review because I feel a ton of the reviews have been inflated and are not living in reality. The Lore falls short and flat compared to its siblings of Dark Souls and Bloodborne but makes up for it for the fresh attempt. I am writing it a 7 for the boring first few hours of the game. It really does pick up near the end of the game but it is not a masterpiece by any means. It is good, not great and not perfect. But a very solid game that deserves love and should be open to criticism. Expand

This game is incredible; the devs added an absurd amount of content, all of which is masterfully implemented into a visually, audibly, and narratively beautiful world, but they forgot one thing--they forgot to make it particularly fun.

But the the major bosses are just very, very unfair. I'm a FromSoft veteran who's completed the King's Field and Dark Souls series, Bloodborne and Sekiro multiple times. This game isn't difficult like Sekiro or Bloodborne difficult. Those bosses were challenging, but very do-able. The problem I have, is that the majority of bosses in Elden Ring just spam attacks absolutely non-stop with infinite FP and stamina, leaving an absolute minuscule window to get hits in. Soloing this game is nigh-on impossible, especially late game when the difficulty is rammed even higher and suddenly.

These games, which heavily punish the player for mindless aggression, Miyazaki is quite happy to not apply that rule to his AI. And it proves how BS a boss is when noone even drops down co-op summon signs, because they don't want to go through that certain boss again.

I'm not saying it needs to be made easier, just a little evenly balanced. But then maybe try and embrace a wider audience by adding a slightly easier mode? All you need to do really is keep runes on death, that's it. But that's just me.

Rated it a 7 out of 10, because outside of the major bosses, this is a fun game, which I enjoyed with great exploration and design.

Good game for the dark souls genre. But ultimately a gimmick riddled experience where they tie the players hands in ridiculous way, thinking that’s what fun is. Does not deserve game of the year for sure. The best part of the game is the lore/story, and after 400 hours later (6play throughs) I still had to find a YouTube video explains 50% of the lore.

If you are into Soulsborne games and want to see an open world version I recommend it. If not stay away. The exploration can be super fun and darkly beautiful but beyond frustrating at times as well. The coop system is still the same so no updates to it as well. I unfortunately thought it was a big evolution but the only thing that's changed is am open world, a horse and you can a summon AI help at times. To me it's fun but can feel extremely tedious.

This game is mediocre in every way.

Biggest difference between other souls games is the huge size of the map. That means they had to put a lot of filler in to the map to accommodate for a full open world. This game has more in common than latest assassin's creed games than to souls/bourne games. What a disappointment...

Key information on items stats is hidden, for a “core” game this should be easily accessible. Most of the game’s difficulty comes from obfuscation of the game’s mechanics, so you have to resort to online guides & walkthroughs.

Honestly: I regret the 30 hours of frustration i had, and the hilarious amount i paid for it.
It basically is just a fighting simulator. There is nothing more in this game. Run around, fight difficult to impossible (for me) battles, grind endlessly, progress extremely slowly, and, from time to time, discover items that may or may not be useful for you.
You will die a lot, lose all character progress regulairly, and generally, have no idea what this game is actually about. The story is non-existent, the world is extremely lifeless, and just filled with enemies that wait only or you, and the storyline will come to an end pretty fast, because you will just not be able to beat the bosses. At least, if you are a casual gamer iike me.
Which forces you to battle easy opponents forever, as rewards and character developement are hardly more than a cosmetic feature.

Of course there are ways to exploit the game, but as soon as i need youtube in a tab to achieve any chance of progression, a game has failed for me.

My last experience in this game, after exploring the whole starting region desperately, was a sorceress who finally enabled me to learn new spells. Which gave me hope, that the torture had come to an end.
And guess what: Those spells are far weaker than the weak ones, that you start with. Its a slap in the face, and im sure, that its an intended one.
This is Elden Ring in a nutshell...

This game is NOT accessible to everyone despite what the paid reviewers have said. I should have known as most content creators are just looking to get paid, not actually be helpful in any way.

I had some experience with From games going in. I did almost beat the base game Dark Souls 3. I did play a bit of Bloodborne. So it’s not like I came in blind or unsuspecting. But watching footage and listening to “reviewers” say this game is accessible gave me hope that maybe this would be a more fun version of the previous titles I played through. Nope. This is just as painful as any other souls game. And what’s worse is I convinced a friend to pick it up thinking that and he had zero experience with these kind of games and basically ally wasted $60.

I’ve put around 30 hours into the game. I’ve over-leveled myself because I just wanted to experience the game and the world in a more casual fashion. I don’t care to be a pro at this game. The open world is fantastic. It’s one of the best open world maps I’ve ever seen. Extremely dense. No place is the same. Packed with stuff to actually find and see. It’s filled with caves and dungeons and open world bosses everywhere. I can’t even count the amount of enemy types. So the world, the combat, the exploration, are all top notch as usual.

But it’s brutal out there. I often find myself dying still in a few shoots to almost anything. Arrows and rocks are buried from across the map from enemies that will destroy you. Trying to get out of combat just to use your map again is tedious. I guess I expected the open world part to be more casual and to have a decent way for leveling but this is not the case. Glitch farming methods are the only real way you can even level in this game and it’s no wonder everyone cheeses them.

Questing is absurd. I understand and accept that this is how From does it. I’m not here to try and change it. But doing quests is insanely confusing, and I just end up watching guides because I don’t want to spend hundreds of hours and multiple play throughs to do them. Many quests can be missed.

Bosses themselves haven’t been too bad depending on play style. But again, I over-leveled with a broken farming method and play a Mage so I’ve got range and a general OPness to me. But even at that you still die in a couple shots if not careful. So anyone who thinks they can over-level to the point of 1 shoting bosses or tanking all their attacks will be let down. I hate when gaming companies do this — lure you into a false sense of being powerful. I think that happens here. Even though you can get more powerful in ER than any other game they’ve made, you won’t really feel it and still die a ton.

I think a 7 is very appropriate for this title. There’s still plenty more to say, both good and bad, but I digress. It’s a good game. It’s not game if the year. It’s not game if the decade. It’s just a really solid game from a really solid developer. It’s just a game that’s not meant for everyone, despite how much I hate that statement and think it’s a terrible one. If your not a Souls player and lover, this game is not a entry to it.

I want to really like this game but performance issues ruin the experience. Playing on performance mode, it feels like I'm getting below 30fps in some boss battles, and having low framerates when you need precise movements and actions, makes it nearly impossible to progress in some places. If you're on the fence about purchasing Elden Ring, hold off until the developers improve the performance.

My impressions after about 15 hours of gameplay:
First of all, an open world game should offer the user as much interaction with the world as possible (i.e. RDR2). Apart from killing the bad guys, there is little interaction. The NPCs are scarce (where is everybody)? It's 95% enemies. Sure, you can collect stuff but that doesn't make this world a more interactive place.

Then, there is no real story. There is no substantial narrative. I'm not saying that a game should take you by the hand and lead you from one quest to the next, but the total lack of any guidance feels like there is no story at all (apart from killing everybody of course). I have no idea about the involvement of George R.R. Martin, but after 15 hours the scenario eludes me.
Sure the aesthetics of the game are fantastic, the imagery is breathtaking, but apart from that it feels like you are playing a bad version of Mortal Combat (because you only have a couple of moves and the enemies have about 100) disguised as a R.P.G.

The game has too many technical quirks and is nothing more than Dark Souls with open world.
After all, it's more beginner-friendly since you can run away from enemies, and they don't chase you forever.

I can't rate this less than 7 because there's clearly a quality game here, but the impenetrable design and frustrating experience makes this a pretty miserable experience. After 20 hours in Limgrave and increasingly resorting to online guides to find a way to progress, I've had enough.

Elden Ring is a totally average game. Don't believe the trolls and the toxic community talk. Many people consider From Software to be the originator of the Souls genre. It actually has its origins in Nihon Falcom. Therefore, according to them, Miyazaki is a messiah. However, Miyazaki and the Souls team is still making the same mistakes.

Objective problems: -Hitboxes are not good.

It actually has its origins in Nihon Falcom. Therefore, according to them, Miyazaki is a messiah. However, Miyazaki and the Souls team is still making the same mistakes.

    Objective problems:

-Hitboxes are not good. There are times when it reminds me of the DS2.
-Boss designs are very unbalanced. They didn't really work well with many bosses.
-The game gets too repetitive. Open world exploration is nice, but it gets boring quickly.
-There seems to be a lot of items, but in the end, a few items are the most useful. The game forces you for make to broken builds. Because some boss designs require it. All builds look alike. For example, more than half of even PvP uses blood builds.
-Optimization is still not fixed and every update is getting worse.
-Spells are powerful. Playing spell builds are more advantageous in many ways.
-Camera angles are not good. It really causes trouble. When the number of enemies is high, you cannot control field of view.
-Lore quality is definitely a controversial topic. However, it has the same lore in other Souls games. Only their names have changed. George R. R. Martin is just PR work.
-Enemies are just based on nonstop spawn attacks with endless stamina as like most of bosses.
-Many of the bosses repeat themselves. Most bosses are either the same or reskin version.
-The hit feeling is not good. Especially the bosses don't even react properly to your attacks.
-It has a toxic and cancerous player base.
-Artificial intelligence problems. A real disaster.
-It is a headache for some attacks in the game to pass through objects.

    Conclusion:

This game is not a masterpiece. Not on a new ip. It's just Dark Souls 4 with open world.

The quality mode helps a little, but that mode is nearly unplayable, so hard to consider that an option. There also no quest list or journal, no map pin system, no hand holding of any kind which is kind of fun and kind of irritating at the same time. I like some bit of structure, it doesn't need to be Bethesda level of hand holding though. It also had a fun aspect to it when you're not repeating the same attempt for the 12th time. I played some of the other dark souls and blood borne games when I was younger, but didn't play them very long due to the difficulty. Now that I'm in my 30s I don't mind sticking to it longer but without that historical Souls franchise experience, it is very difficult and very frustrating. I've been playing since launch and still haven't beat the first boss. Watch video, gotten advise and still can't get it done. I would have liked to try it coop but ya know it didn't work for days and I still haven't gotten to try it. From what I've seen, it's really not that dynamic of a coop anyway so I'm weary. Overall the game is fun ut is very frustrating not just for difficulty but the broken online mode, meh graphical details, lack of basic features, and crazy clunky fighting mechanics. Basically, if you're not already a Souls die hard with a clear bias for this type of game, this game is just good but not good enough. Too bad the critics couldn't see past their bias. Expand

The exploration in the game is by far the only reason it gets as high a score from me personally. Its super fun to explore and find new places and enemies to kill but this game is so repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. Boss battles are the same, enemies everywhere are the same. It's a great step in a the right direction but if you're going to open your world map then you got to have a reason to live in it, it has to be an interesting place for me to ROLE PLAY. Not overly difficult if you level up and explore the world for better gear and weapons, but why else would you be playing an RPG. Combat is simple and fair most of the time and by fair i mean if you get hit you get punished, that's what these games are about. Sadly because that mechanic is so old and stale once you master moving and taking small bites you can really own this game. Its good but not as good as some other RPG'S over the years. Like Dragons Lair in the arcades as a kid a lot of people got pissed off the game was so hard and wanted their Quarters back. But if you just learned the patterns to the dungeons the Quarters started to go really far. If people were still buying physical copies of games Elden Ring would have its own pre-owned bin at every location. Solid 7/10 Expand

I dont see how so many critics are giving this game perfect scores. You will spend a lot of hours grinding to level up and your character will still be weak. It's an okay game. Dare I say, even good. But it's not the second coming of christ that a lot of people are making it out to be.

I just played Sekiro, and damn, that game is incredible. It's challenging, with a great story, and visceral combat. Which is everything this game isn't, so going from that to this was just jarring.

Combat in this game consists of rolling around like runaway tire while bosses spam attacks, and then occasionally getting a smack or two in. The fact that defense still consists of the same crap dark souls had 10 years ago is lame. All an agility character can do is roll around like a moron. Why didn't they at least try and put sekiro's parry in? Why isn't there a smaller step dodge that's actually useful? All you can do is roll 5 times in a row, then get one hit in.

The story is, well, vague. Meh. That's all I have to say. Coming from Sekiro's story to this was disappointing.

In past souls type games by Fromsoft, you'd adventure a while, and encounter a boss, and get stuck on it a long time then finally have that "hell yeah" moment when you beat it. Just coming from Sekiro, each boss was exhilarating. Overcoming boss enemies in this game sucks ass. Why? The density. Everywhere you throw a stone there's a goddamn boss. It's so tedious. There's no pacing, it's all just boss enemies everywhere all over the world that you'll die to 5+ times, and then actual turbo bosses that you'll die on 30+ times in the dungeon areas.

There's another issue with combat. In the open world, fighting on the horse is optimal nearly all the time. Like 99% of the time. In a game where death is so punishing, it would be stupid to not do the most optimal thing. It's also optimal to just run past and completely ignore the existence of a lot of enemies. The reward for killing them just isn't worth the time. Who the hell designs a game where you're just supposed to bypass things people put weeks of work into designing?

The open world is good I guess, if a bit monochromatic, with a few exception areas that are incredible to behold. Some areas are really fun to explore. Some are awful and incredibly aggravating. Fast travel is a thing. A big thing. There are bonfires every 10 feet. And you'll be fast traveling between them all the time because of the tedium factor involved. I really dislike fast travel like this but whatever.

Overall I'd just call this game amazing, annoying, tedious, and fun, all at the same time. It's definitely not a 10/10. It's dark souls with a bigger (and less good, in my opinion) world. It'll give you a good 150, 200 hours of playtime. I really wish they at least tried to innovate on the crappy and dated dark souls combat, instead of making us roll more than a stoner in a joint factory.

Those From Software “lifehacks” gone too far – now You’re not even forced to talk to NPC, to get a map icon info who he is…for example it completely ruined first encounter with Blaidd.
Game is vast and You’re hyped at the beginning – first area (Limgrave) has the best environmental structure (dragon, dungeons, mini-boss, big cart, camp).
Landscape is immersive and for the moment I was feeling epic adventure vibe.
Sadly, this bait for beta access reviewers is going down very fast – too big and empty, stretched without common sense, not rewarding for your time invested…
Dragons are too easy, quests are too complicated for open world, crafting unnecessary (you can’t craft weapons nor armors), legendary weapons are easier to upgrade than normal, dungeons too small, framerate at 35-50 fps, pop-in everywhere, unbalanced weapons (colossal zweihander damage and stagger equal to claymore…), etc…
    After 150 hours I’m bored. It’s a promise unfullfiled.
Elden Ring is very overrated and not a masterpiece.

There is loot and weapons and armor galore, several different spirit ashes to find and use, which are essentially NPC's that you summon to help you in battle, and numerous different talismans which give you boosts to different abilities and stats. The freedom to truly mold you character into the type of fighter you want them to be is superb. The gameplay is mostly solid, and teaming up with a friend in co-op is a whole lot of fun. The game is gorgeous and the world is very immersive at times. The ability to sort of create your own stories within the game and talk about it with your friends is a highlight for sure. I'll never forget discussing strategies for certain areas and bosses with a couple of my friends that also play the game. Cons- Terrible camera angles at times. I don't know how many times I can legit blame dying on awful angles while fighting enemies in confined areas simply because I couldn't see them due to the camera positions. The targeting system when there are multiple enemies gets frustrating, and as fun as co-op is, they make it way too complicated to summon a friend. It seems ridiculous that I have to go farm plants to craft the items I need just to play cooperatively. Let me send them an invite and roam the Lands Between at will. I don't like that Torrent cannot be used at all during co-op either. It makes traversing the vast open world with friends seem more like a task than a good time. Story... Yeah. I just don't find it interesting. Not only is it really vague, but it is also bland and essentially non-existent at most times. There isn't much to keep me going other than the thrill of the next kill and a desire to explore. The NPC's are all stoic and dull, and lack personality. You feel no connection to anyone in the game. As far as RPG's go, this is at the bottom of the list in that aspect. I also dislike the total lack of hubs. No populated areas, whatsoever. Not one single town or city with any signs of life. That is more of a personal preference than a knock on the game, because that is obviously intentional to leave this type of thing out, but still- It makes the huge open world seem very bleak, lifeless, and empty. Several bosses are repeated, as are dungeons (outside of legacy dungeons and the main bosses) and that also eventually begins detracting from the overall experience. All in all, it's solid. I have plenty of gripes and opinions on what I think would make it a much better game, but that is all subjective, personal preference. If you are a fan of Souls games, you will most likely love this one. If you are used to open worlds such as The Elder Scrolls, Witcher 3, GTA, Red Dead, etc... You may feel like I do. Expand

Pros: The game is absolutely huge. The world Is amazing to explore and almost every nook and crannie holds something to find or discover. Boss fights are epic but can't get a little frustrating if you play certain classes. The character building /level up system is pretty good as well.

Cons: The story is very hard to follow as you are told something once and you have no record of anything you were told so if you forgot something you're pretty much clueless unless you look it up online. Same goes for the hidden sidequest throughout the game. It's one of the most poorly constructed quest /side mission implementation I've ever seen in any game. The enemies that are supposed to be trash mobs running around the open world are sometimes harder than the main bosses which is ridiculous on its own.

Recap. All in all it is a good game If you want to randomly run around the amazing open world and kill stuff with no rhyme or reason or any way to look back to see what npc's have told you along the way. If you are into story or dialog this is definitely not a game for you.

Contrary to what some players claim, it's definitely not a masterpiece.

Nothing in this game makes it comparable to true masterpieces such as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Breath of the Wild. And most importantly: it's not fun at all.

Needed to add my rating on XSX as I have played it on both PS5 and XSX and I really hope they can patch the technical issues we seem to be having on Xbox. It's such a great game and I really want to be able to join friends on Xbox to play more but I will wait for future patches.

Could have been better. This game had too much hype. The game is generally looks awesome . The map is very huge and its is really fun to exploring. The bad thing is optimization. I believe, it gonna be fixed after patches. The feel also could have been better with more blood and gore and more animations on steath takedowns. Remember this is 2022 game .

    TLDR recap:
    - no local multiplayer (two family members would need two systems and two disks) $$$$ stupid
    - the skill level needed, constant dying, almost non-existent margin of error for the average gamer make the game WAYYYYY less fun. I didn't come here for a part time job. (and this is coming from someone who beat Targit at lvl 23 with an Astrologer) - forced into pvp just to play

    - forced into pvp just to play with friends. Stupid, lazy, and bordering on straight up jerkdom

    (1) No true local multiplayer. A family needs TWO xbox units & TWO disks to play what I should be able with one each. It borders on criminal negligence in today's game market. Period.
    (2) First From Software game. To say the survival learning curve is hideous is a laugh. You die over and over for no reason other than developers thinking it's FUN for professional people with families wanting to relax playing a video game. There's no such luck with this title. I understand learning a game and getting better skill, but there is no margin for error for simple mistakes. This is coming from someone who killed Margit at lvl 23 as an Astrologer...farmed the meteorite staff etc....I researched. I improved skill. Still the learning curve is STEEP and unnecessarily harsh. Think of the average player not the try hards or make tiers like so many other games do to fix it.
    (3) Forcing me to play multiplayer in today's gaming world when I don't want to adds to my frustration. So I have to have two systems and two disks to play the game with family already and NOW you force us to play pvp vs randoms if we try to play with help. It doesn't make the game fun for those that don't want pvp. Just stop it. It borders on being jerks to your player base. It's lazy. Make a separate pvp system without forcing us to comply with it.

Fix these three issues and my rating goes to a 9.

If it is this hard to find summons halfway through the game just after its release, it will be completely dead within a year. The game is too sprawling for coop to work as well as it did in DS3. A story where you would have to collect tax from Marika would make more sense than this mess.

The bar is now so low, that an OK game at best is hailed as a masterpiece. Tragic.

It may not be a popular opinion but I think this boss is "ahead of it's time" and it is hands down the greatest boss I have ever played. First off, I love the unforgiving combat system typical of souls-like games. It's a steep learning curve but rewarding when you finally get it down. The visuals are fantastic and at first I enjoyed exploring the open world. In the end, I found the world too open and too repetitive. I can see why some people may love it, but for me I just found it good and not great in the end.

Despite some annoying performance issues, Elden Ring is a masterpiece. The combat, enemy variety, exploration, music, and open world are top notch. I’ve been playing it daily across all platforms alongside other games all month, and look forward to doing that all year as I try new builds, help friends, and try to do everything I want in this triumph of a video game.

Elden Ring rewards your curiosity in many ways, be it items, runes or a pathway to another area, but mostly it’s a story to tell your friends when you are sharing tales around the bonfire. It does not force feed tutorials down your throat, but instead it leans far the opposite way by not telling you much at all and lets you explore and find things out on your own. There is no true quest log, no points of interest on a map or no arrows pointing you in the right direction, so there is a good chance you’ll miss some of the best caves and areas of the game. Because of all of this, Elden Ring is forcing me to find all of that out on my own and it is one of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I will continue to explore the Land Between for many hours to come. I’m just not in a hurry.

Elden Ring manages to draw the player into a fascinating world for many hours, with refined gameplay that fits perfectly with the freedom granted to the player. A sumptuous but imperfect work, which fails to completely overcome some of the historical flaws of Hidetaka Miyazaki's productions. Flaws that, however, can't diminish the scope of a masterpiece destined to leave an indelible mark on the videogame world and to set new standards for the souls-like and open-world genres.
