This is supposed to be one of those games where you "make your own fun" by simply going out there and explore, but the game has to PROVIDE the content to make players have unique experiences, and that's where Sea of Thieves falls way short, at least right now.

I'd go as far as to say the lack of content in this game is embarrassing, it offers a playground that is wide as the ocean.. and deep as a puddle.

Sea of Thievs, such a great potential just flushed down in toilet. There is moments, even fun moments, but then after a few hours you realise there isnt anything much to do. Dont buy this game for 60$ its more like 20$ worth at the max, and should have a earlie access stamp.

This game will die out soon, if rare dont fix it.

Let us start this review off with a question. Did some of you people that are reviewing this game even play it? How can anyone in their right mind justify giving this game a 7-10 rating?

    Pros
    -beautiful water effects
    -PIRATES
    -unique game environment

    Cons
-4 hours of content tops unless you want to spend the 200+ to reach pirate legend doing the same quests over and over and over again on an endless grind of GO TO POINT A, GO TO POINT B AND GET EXP
-0 progression at all, completing quests does nothing but give you exp and gold that go towards pure cosmetic customization of your ship and pirate
-the Kraken is literally just a tentacle simulator with a low resolution texture slapped on it that is more of an annoyance than an actual threat
-PVP is completely unsatisfactory. It devolves into players waiting on the enemy ship and killing them as they spawn with no chance of fighting back.
-Doing skull forts is impossible most of the time because if you do sink the enemy ships that are incoming 99% of the time, they spawn not even 2 minutes away infinitely with a fresh supply of cannonballs, wooden planks, and healing items. It is an arduous grind of seeing who will tire out first and leave.
-THE PRICE POINT, how can this game demand $60 when games that are worth $15-$30 have had infinitely more content, progression, and customization options on their releases.

Final Thoughts: Simply do not buy this game, it is a cash grab by mircrosoft and rare.ltd to make a quick buck off the hype train this game had going for it.

My opinion this game Sea of thieves, should still be in beta testing. for one they limit the fps xbox users are allowed to achieve, whereas they dont limit pc users fps, Kind of **** Fps is a Big Big BIG **** Deal. probably the standalone reason i dont like this game. other than that the game progresses like **** you dont get to get anything to make your character more effective in any **** aspect what so ever. its all cosmetic. but im sorry Rare thinks Cosmetics are all that matter. not really but this seems to be the case to me. you only have like 2 options to speed up the fps. thats downgrade to a smaller tv resolution and decrease your fov. FYI its not my internet. Day Z. Plays Perfect on a full server. I just wanted to let everybody know this game is pretty much **** right now.
The Best Aspect to the game is being able to steer and control the boat. which they probably stole from another game.
Im sure there going to update it and all that but they boast more than the game is currently worth.

The visuals are absolutely stunning and boat mechanics are great fun but sadly the game feels a little hollow, the way that you interact with NPCs seems really sloppy, the text boxes are annoying to navigate through and the lack of voice or cutscene just kills it for me. Would it really have hurt to add in some cutscenes when you speak to the NPCs?

Even the cosmetic items are extremely sparse. There's literally only like 2 pages of items you can get. This is in a game where cosmetics are the only form of progression! Now, don’t let the comparison to the lousy open-world title from two years ago scare you away - this game is much better. But, the game does have its shortcomings. An overall lack of content at launch is proving to be quite disappointing, as nothing has changed much in terms of the game’s structure since the multiple betas released over the past year. The game is pretty simple; board your ship, steal some treasure, and return said treasure to your homeland. That may sound enjoyable, but for a full-priced $60 game, that’s not enough to satisfy anyone’s hard earned money. Playing with friends is fun, and there is plenty of opportunity for a role-playing style of gameplay, but playing by yourself can get pretty boring. The visual style is impressive, though, and the open-world feel is quite immersive. The mechanics feel natural and not at all clunky, and the experience the game brings when interacting with other players is pretty satisfying. But, with not much to offer at launch, Sea of Thieves is a game best to be bought in the coming months - once more content is released. There is an incredible amount of potential here, and hopefully Rare takes advantage of the great foundation they’ve established with Sea of Theives. Expand

You get a quest, sail to the island you need to, get chest/kill skeleton, go turn in quest. That's the entire game. Then you can level up and get cosmetics. That is it. This game had unlimited potential and they fulfilled none of it. On top of all of that the game also has troubling bugs and other problems. Latency problems, visual bugs and frame skips are all prevalent. So while there is PVP it gets very frustrating when there is massive lag spikes and frame skips. On top of that, it has an amateur multiplayer interface at best. You have no control over your party. Usually you just have to quit out of your game entirely if you want a friend to join you. And the cross-platform party system through the xbox app on PC has never actually worked without any problems whenever me and my friends have tried. It generally has taken us 20-30 minutes before we can even get into a game together due to the party problems. Also playing solo or even just duos is the hard mode of the game. The minor fun that is to be had from this game seemed to drain away while trying to use match making or sailing in a sloop. This is not a $60 game. It feels like a $20-$30 early access game. I know you can get it through xbox game pass but many people purchased it outright. And if you were wondering you can get a refund from microsoft. Just contact them. You don't have to have a valid reason. They will refund you. So, while this game may come to fruition in a year or so, as it stands now it is an extremely poor game. Expand

After a couple of hours I had mastered the controls which are just so awkward its unreal and decided to start my first mission, it took about 30 minutes to complete it ( capturing 2 white chickens) that I was amazed my next mission was again to capture this time 1 red chicken. In reality there are only 3 types of mission

    1. Kill a skeleton and take the skull to the outpost
    2. Find a buried chest and take the chest to the outpost
    3. Capture a chicken/s and take them back to outpost

    Seeing a trend here!

I did too that is sea of thieves in a nutshell.

Never has there been a more apt game name than this as all the developers are after is your money

I’m sorry but there is literally nothing to do in this game but sail in a small map, visit the same islands and possibly fight ships which are ungratifying and offer no risk and no reward the gameplay is boring, the loop is boring and even tho the graphics are good, it counts for nothing when it’s empty it’s a game not a picture.

Sea of Thieves Rares first IP after years of doing useless Kinect titles, this was meant to be their baby a pure passion project. However after playing 3 hours of Sea of Thieves I have seen and done everything there is to do, in its current state Sea of Thieves is a paid beta test early access title, its as shallow as a puddle.

I wont lie, graphically Sea of Thieves is amazing. It has some of the best sky boxes and water physics I have probably ever seen. Its co-op is great and really rewards the player for good teamwork but it all ends there. There is little to no progression system, most of us know this already but having no progression is a mistake. It basically just turns it into a massive grind fest, with the player trying to get to Legendary Pirate status which is basically impossible without having to grind out hundreds of hours for pretty much no reason.

The bottom line is, Sea of Thieves is unfinished but it has amazing potential and in years time it will probably be an excellent title. However in its current state it isnt worth your $60 investment. You're better off getting an XBOX gamepass and trying it out before you make the decision to buy, because to be honest right now, RARE doesn't deserve your money...

Blue Whales, dolphins swimming by the ship, turtles there is so much that i have to use the word 'lazy' on the devs part. The missions get dry after about 2 or 3 of each and you get to the point when you can't even be bothered to go after a ship cos it takes too long and good chance they have nothing on their ship. Nothing that inspiring to spend your coins on. Just confuses me when developers spend so much time and money thinking of a great concept and making a game look amazing and to think that's enough.I honestly question if they even like pirates. The idea and concept is amazing, drift on the wide seven seas as you fight other pirates and collect the booty.
But this game is not that. This game is not at all what was promised. The game looks beautiful and you really come to admire the cartoonish yet amazing artstyle. Furthermore the music in the game is amazing and you'll be dancing to the tunes as you set out on your pirate adventures. But the flaws are there.
Their is not progression you only have reputation and becoming a "pirate legend" to look forward to. I feel as the game should have been more mmo-esque. What I would have liked to see is a skill tree, not that would make things unfair but i their has to be some kind of objective. Voyage's get old fast and in the beggining they are a real joy, but quickly feel like a choir with voyage's repeating themselves constantly and to my experience, there are almost no other pirates at sea and it just feels like a PvE game only and not a hybrid ( PvP and PvE ).
The game's asking price is unacceptable regarding the fact that you get so little descent content at launch, the game feels like it's in beta and I do not, at all reccomened buying it for 60 dollars, wait for the price to go down to maybe 15-25 dollars or just get it free for 14 days through xbox game pass!

graphics are really good but there is literally no game play. 3 mission types. Kill someone, collect an animal, or find a chest. The sea travel is boring once you have done it once and you just end up going from one island to another doing the same mission over and over. The rewards are bad too, its all cosmetic. Another flop from microsoft in the exclusive department.

Very atmospheric, very fun, amazing water effects, can be fun with the right people.

    Problems:
Sluggish combat system, trying to switch weapons too fast will make it so that you don't actually switch weapons, and therefor not switch unless you spam the button so that way you switch when you actually can.

Not much to do honestly, the quests are enjoyable, but there needs to be a wider range.

The spawning system is atrocious. The skull island raid is great, but the pvp there is nonsense considering if you win and sink a ship, they are back there in 2 seconds because they spawn at the closest outpost. This game was made by millennials for millennials, so even if you lose, you get to retry retry retry retry retry retry retry retry retry until one crew gets sick of it and leaves. Honestly, if you lose the least that should happen, is you spawn on the other side of the map, what I would like more, is for you to switch servers so that you cannot come back. This would force the community to get better at ship combat by making them actually repair their ships, or do drive by's... not hey lets anchor and everyone on cannons and blasting and hope they sink before we do, then repair when they are gone.

So the lack of content pushes everyone to do the ONLY skull island out, and you get a never-ending battle where skull island takes 1-4 hours to do. Also, where is the damn variety in monsters, its just skeletons over and over and over.... god put some ai pirates and stuff like that driving around with rewards for killing them... something... anything... PLEASE!

So there being only 1 skull island, and galleys on the server that can just keep coming back, a solo/duo on a sloot that want to challenge themselves to do it, can't... period... infinite spawn of galleys won't allow you to.

Changes that should be made: Faster combat system, more weapon variants, maybe a 2 hander that has longer range and deals more damage but is slower, a sword AND shield where you can block bullets. A better scoped sniper rifle, maybe even a different type of rifle and submachine gun. Add 1 more weapon slot so that we have a little more ammo, and more capability in combat. Add ammo slot upgrades that gives you 1-5 more bullets. When a ship is sunk, that crew needs to spawn on the furthest outpost away that has no one at it, not the freaking closest one. And honestly, Galleys should be on their own server, and sloots on theirs. I've seen too many galleys only go after sloots, and completely ignore other galleys because the crew is pathetic. Also, how's about when you finally get the kraken and defeat it... how about some kind of freaking reward... how do you guys reward people for losing with 800 chances... yet a crew that wins vs a kraken you give nothing too. Who is making decisions for this game? They need to be fired, and allow someone else to take the helm.

Also, how is this a $60 title? Can anyone come up with a legitimate answer other than these guys just wanted to make a quick pirates plunder and then hope everyone doesn't care? This game is probably worth $20, but definitely not worth more than $30.

I've talked to many of my friends about how much I was anticipating this game, then after playing it for a few days they asked about it, and I told them straight up, not worth it, because it isn't. When a ton more content is added for us to go do, and they figure out and add the things that i've put in here, I'll change my opinion, and tell people to get the game, but as of right now this looks like a cash crab with 0 passion, because they would have realized that there wasn't much to do in the game.

I had a lot of faith in rare, but I will never.... EVER buy another title from them, and everyone else should do the same. We need to stop these companies from making quick bucks and moving on and exploiting gamers that just want to play a game that they want to love, but then get rick rolled with 30 minutes of content.

This is a game that features the studio's signature charm and humor and holds to its core design philosophy of making unique and interesting games that buck the industry trends. This is perhaps the best title we have seen from Rare in over a decade, a studio that never quite felt in control after they became a part off Microsoft. The mechanics of the game are simple in nature but are effective and rely on a player's own ability to make reasonable conclusions based on how things work and behave.

Steering the ship can feel cumbersome and difficult but that is because it takes practice and finesse. Navigating the map can be challenging but once you get used to identifying the unique characteristics of the island it becomes second nature, with no need for any automated assists that games so often feel obligated to provide. In terms of the rules that govern the game, it feels like an open canvas that you can interpret as you like. Getting used to the basics doesnt take long but mastering the finer aspects of playing the game is something that may be difficult to pick up on.

Bear in mind, this is a game all about social interaction. You can play it solo but the open seas are a lonely place. Not only is it very challenging to strike it on your own, but it also misses the point of this game. This game is meant to be played with other sea worthy mateys, not only to work is best but also gives the best opportunities for strong emergent gameplay. This game is most about the stories that you can tell and remember, stories involving exploring shipwrecks, dueling with other players, fending off the kraken, and many other things thar can happen.

I have spent many hours at sea and have only explored a handful of the locations. The way missions work are largely randomly generated quests so it can feel repetitive when there is a lack of variety in the objectives. Bear in mind though that the quests do get stronger with multitiered goals as you increase your ranks. The people saying there is nothing to do or see after just a few hours seem to take assumption that the game is solely based on the early types of quests given. They don't seem to understand that player interaction adds to the depth and scope of everything they experience in this game. They don't see the ocean for its islands, if you will. This isnt a game about grinding to an endgame, it is an evolving experience that with time and updates will flourish. Rare is back!

Then there is the Gaming Community that is currently taking the game as hostile.
There is a larger group of players that has found out that 4v1 or 4v2 players are a real easy target. Especially if you are a console players. You will end up getting spawned killed over and over and over and over on your ship. You will get hunted by the same group of people even thought they killed you and know you dont have any valuable gold on your ship. Just because its easy for them. and think of it . PC vs xbox in a first person shooter who wins that fight ?

Taking it up on the forums is pointless because the same group of people are active on the forums and made any discussion about this just toxic , this ranges to threats to personal attacks while moderators dont handle this to make sure you have a constructive discussion. But using swear words like Sh*t is not ok that will get you a warning or even a ban.

Then there is the ingame content. From the alpha to beta to final game there has not really been added allot of content .. actually it seems from beta to final game they even downscale the game ? merchant missions are simple fetch and catch missions. other missions are ok though.

The game is also riddled with allot of bugs that where not in the alpha or beta, Joining is a pain because on peak times its basically pointless playing since you wont ether get in or you wont get or keep your progress. Full character deletions or most items gone for ever have also been part of ongoing issues. Rare seems not to care to much ether here and tells people just to wait its a bug that re logging fixes and ignores people reporting that its not and that the bugged state is actually saved to your account now. all in all

This is way to expensive ,
Gets soon microtransactions to even milk people more.
Ingame PVP mechanics are bad and abused allot.
Community overrun by toxic players making this for sure not even a 12 year + game when real bad proofanity . threats and other harassment is screamed both in game and you get harassed on the forums while moderators refuse to take actions.

And now Cheaters are also on top of that reported with rare responding .. Just report there name and proof.. Issue is you cant see other peoples player names. Its like they dont even care.

With all thats going on , issues , bugs, double moral , rare not caring .. the high price (btw that might differ from country to country but in Australia its 100 $ right now and other people report same high local prices ) i can not in anyway recommend this game

Launch Day for SOT was absolutely god awful, the servers got so flooded Rare barred new players from joining, and after 3 stress tests over the past month it is unacceptable that launch day was literally unplayable. Some would blame the Xbox Gamepass for the flooded servers, and being that this is the first major Xbox Exclusive to launch as part of gamepass it is very possible they underestimated the amount of people who saved up their two week free trial for Sea of Thieves.

As a kid I played Pirates of The Caribbean Online with my friends and we heavily enjoyed our pirate adventures and I am happy to say Sea of Thieves scratches the pirate itch I've had for years. The graphics mostly the water, are absolutely stunning, my only complaint is the in my opinion, awful looking characters in most cases. For a game based on being YOUR own pirate it is kind of odd that you are stuck with a wonky random character generator, I myself spent 47 minutes trying to find the perfect character model only to not be able to connect to the servers on launch day.

The gameplay is fun solo or with a team as you learn to work together and operate smoothly in combat and how to pull maneuvers like a dogleg to gain an edge in ship battles. At release the game has only a few things the betas didn't, the kraken and certain factions to trade for. I myself haven't encountered a Kraken yet but rumor has it that it's very disappointing. Chest grinding for sure gets boring and the game can become very repetitive however sailing the seas looking for other pirates to plunder or become friends with is extremely fun. Sea of Thieves is a game that you can play for 12 hours if you wish or just pick it up for an hour or 2 after a long days work. Overall the game is good and has great potential but if Rare does not get some fresh content out soon the game will tank.

Sea of Thieves is a great example of what NOT to do with a video game in 2018! It is a boring experience that calls itself a "Pirate" game which has an awful sword fighting engine, and a mere 3 weapons, (pistol, blunderbuss, sniper) and even worse only 2 types of ships (galleon, skoon). Now I generally enjoy playing games alone and obviously thats almost impossible in this game. And evenSea of Thieves is a great example of what NOT to do with a video game in 2018! And even though it is possible it lacks any type of fun whatsoever. Theres basically 2 mission types, fetch and deliver, or find an island, fight waves of the exact same skeleton until a Commander appears, then kill him and bring his skull back to the merchant. There is no XP system, no upgraded weapons or even mods. And the only progression whatsoever comes in the form of different skins for all your items, weapons, clothes and boats. You can't even create your own pirate. You just choose from randomly generated ones which took me nearly 30 monutes to find one that didnt look stupid. Then i decided to try to get into it and play online with others including one friend and even then it just wasnt any fun. We spent nearly an hour trying to get to an island on the map to pick up and make a delivery and sunk our own ship time after time. Once in a storm, and another I honestly dont know what happened, i wasnt even on the ship, got the chicken and omw back my friend said the ship is sinking. I realized then that all the time to get there was wasted and had to start over. I turned the game off. Came back online later that night for one more try and this time i went and lolled skeletons until i got the skull i needed and on my way back to the order of souls another ship of players came and i completely meant to mind my own and they attacked. I actually killed two of them and then my friend was killed and our ship was sinking which then cancelled the quest again. It was truly the biggest waste of about 10 hours i have put into a game in my life and because of the sheer lack of content. No xp system or any better weapons, (cosmetics DO NOT COUNT!) And the fact that its the worst game I have nearly ever played, i dont even feel its worth the 10 dollars for a month on xbox game pasd and therefore i must give it a 0 because on my opinion its a game that IS NOT WORTH PLAYING and i had to make my first metacritic account just to write this review because that's just how bad this game is and to get people to save their money! Even if rare puts tons of content in this game in 2 years tome it isnt fair to the people that pay 60 dollars on day one. They suffer having to wait and we as gamers need games like this to fail so that developers DO NOT CONTINUE THIS TREND OF RELEASING A GAME WITH PROMISES OF CONTENT LATER. Because then one day an incredible game concept will. Ome out, sell hundreds of thousands of copies and then the developer pulls the plug and reaps the rewards of their false promises. This must stop now. Sea of Thieves is exactly that. A Sea of thieving game producers and developers who are getting paid now while making the game later. If that was truly the case go to kickstarter where tons of amazing games have gotten the funding they need to release several fantastic games. I am cancelling my xbox game pass immediately following this review so that i save myself 10 dollars because i pretty much own all the good games on it and this game isnt worth it for free. Expand

I literally made a metacritic account just to warn you all that this game is an insult to us all. I feel duped for spending $60 on a game that's no where near complete. As a community we can't just keep buying incomplete games and cross our fingers for future DLC to get the game we wanted/expected. Play on the Xbox pass at the very most.

You play this game for the fun of playing with friends, chatting, sailing, cooperating, digging and hunting, getting in to storms with a full ship of treasure and nearly losing it all, getting attacked by other players half way through a fort fight as they try and steal your winnings, seeing two other ships in the distance having a fight, and deciding you need in on this and all the loot should be yours.

    All the mechanics are solid.
Sailing works well, fights can get very tactical, and there are lots of hidden items and emergent quests that come along as you are sailing around.

The only thing I dislike is that fundamentally you are doing three types of quests, kill skeletons, dig up treasure, or collect animals.

I feel they need to add some more AI interactions. Skeleton ships to attack, or pirate hunters who come after you when you have lots of loot on board.

All in all it is a fun game, especially with friends. But the joy of the game comes from when interactions occur between players. The base mechanics itself can drag.

There is a huge lack of content and the content in the game feels to much the same. It's getting repetitive and boring fast as all three factions give missions that are similar. Take quest, go to island A, get what you need, get back. And when you progress that faction you get another "trickier" quest. Take the quest, solve a clue, go to island A, go to island B, get back... ZzZzZz

Don't get me wrong though. The core in this game as of graphics and mechanics are awesome and with more content, the right content, this game has the potential to be really awesome and fun co-op experience. One could just hope they have much content in the loop for the near feature. If not, the game might be dead before even reaching it's full potential.

I'm also really tired of games that comes out lacking content with the promise to build as they go... Can we just get what we pay for for once? 60US$ should be a content rich game, not just a platform that in the future will expand.

What a joke this game is. How can today, a triple AAA game like this, charged full price, be delivered with no content at all? You play 30min and that's it you saw everything. Sure, it is fun with friends for a little bit, but it get repetitive SUPER fast.

For the time you want to spend here it’s a laugh riot WITH other people IF you can also find other people while in the world. I’ve never seen water look this good honestly. The bad for me is how simple this game is & I do mean simple.

There are 3 factions and each one gives you fetch quests to go and get something to bring back to them. Each time you do it you will get a faction number to rise which unlocks a cosmetic, exclusive to that faction while getting some gold. You then use the gold to buy skins for your character(that you don’t get to create), your weapons and ship. That’s it. There’s no story, there’s no other quest elements. All of the gear is cosmetic and plays the same as what you start out with. There are chests worth more and some do stuff like fill up your boat randomly with water if it’s a cursed chest.

Overall it feels like a game still in beta and maybe one that was gonna use the loot box algorithm. I’m really disappointed in Rare & for the millionth time this gen, Microsoft. It’s not worth $60 and I felt like the $35 I put into it was too much also. I’d have paid maybe $15 for it, if anything honestly.

This is very much the “Destiny” of pirate games and what I mean by that is another sixty dollar title has little content, a very buggy launch and is very repetitive. It is far worse in that sense than Destiny, but so people know where im coming from that is what I mean. I don't see this making it very far even with some changes due to the slew of games coming out this year, including what looks like a more ambitious pirate themed video game.

Beautiful world but sadly the gameplay isn’t as deep as the sea it takes place in, considering the game was 4 years in the making it just feels far from finished. Such little content it feels more like a budget title rather than a full priced offering, just another example of how far Rare have fallen.

This game is an skeleton of a great game. The dynamics are there, the graphics are there. The environment... its just not there. Not only there is a giant problem with the lack of cosmetics, quests types, progression system, there is a giant one, and falls in the problem of the emptiness of the world. The world just feels empty, some handpicked npcs, and empty generic islands all over the world.

It was made very clear that this would be a different sort of game with no overarching story, instead focusing on making your own story with your friends. The game has great sailing mechanics, and a fun and interactive world, but the game is not fun without a microphone and friends. I was slightly let down with the lack of appearance customization as this is the only progression in the game, but the team at rare has said the game will be getting many updates and events as time goes on. I personally love playing this game and i can easily spend an entire night sailing around the seas and joking with my friends. I do wish there was a little bit more in the sense of people you can get reputation with, but the challenging parts of the game (the skeleton forts, the kraken) are somewhat rare which makes it very fun and surprising when it happens. I'm happy with this game but i believe everyone should fully do their research before purchasing this game. It is definitely not a game for everybody. Expand

This game while it has nice graphics is in need of some real interface work. Take a page out of Pirates of the Carribean game. The steering and shooting should be easier to manage. The story line needs to be more intuitive. Go here get this bring it there. There should be an option to purchase gold as well. Don't know why this game was released without thinking it through.

If you're a person that doesn't like to choose what you do and buy games for the shooting aspect or the role-playing aspect of it than SoT might not be the best game for you. I love it because I can fight skeletons, fight other people, or just look for chests depending on what I want to do.

We have nothing but respect for Rare's vision with Sea of Thieves, but it is a game as likely to chew you up and spit you out, as it is to embrace you. If the wind is in your favour then it can be a delight, but a storm is never far off if you lose momentum. The real test of the quality and efficacy of Rare's plan will be in how it manages to evolve and grow in the weeks and months to come. [Issue#199, p.67]
