What a fantastic game! Forget the negativity, it deserves so much more. Fair enough it looks similar to previous games, but so what, that's the nature of this business, building on the good stuff, and making it better! The game is a dream to play with loads of great new features and modes. Absolutely brilliant!!

More of the same... Those who control the release of CoD should stop selling these games for full price and should sell them as an expansion pack because that is what it is. This is not worth the $60 they ask you to pay...

the argument of iteration vs innovation is a valid one - at the end of the day, both are worthwhile pursuits, and it's clear that activision is playing it a little safe by introducing small changes (my favorite being the ability to level up guns) rather than introducing drastic overhauls. the original MW game was such a huge breakthrough you can hardly blame them for sticking close to it's playbook, but that said, if you didn't like it then you're not going to like it now. but for those of us who enjoy it, MW3 is just about what we'd hoped it'd be.

Truly the most polished game to date. Excellent single player with even more epic set pieces. Great Multiplayer which has improved in many areas. Spec Ops is the crowning achievement this time around with an amazing amount of depth and fun to be had. Overall outstanding game which I will be playing till the next one arrives. Well done to everyone involved.

congratulations Robert Bowling for taking everything good about the multiplayer for MW2 and Black Ops and totally screwing it up. All of the bugs of MW2 and NONE of the features or configurables of Black Ops. Well done. Totally broken multiplayer experience. A round of applause, please, for the man that could take a winning recipe and actually screw it up and get away with it.

I was weary going into this game because MW2 was kind of a mixed bag, and from what i had heard the 2 games were very similar. When I actually played the game i was sold, the campaign is great, the spec ops mode i fantastic, and the mutliplayer is the most balanced and enjoyable of the series. COD is mainly a multiplayer game though so i will focus on that. None of the guns are overpowered, the perks all have there ups and downs, and the new strike packages allow every breed of player to have a good time. Now this is not a perfect game though, the campaign once again skims on character development, and the multiplayer maps are a little small for my liking, but by no means do these things overpower the great qualities of this game. Soooooo..... unless you have actually played this game, DONT WRITE A **** REVIEW FOR IT! Expand

I'm actually going to write a review against all negative critics. I have been playing COD franchise since COD1. I bought all COD but this time I thought it is time to switch to BF3. After watching both reviews on GT, BF3 scored 9.2 and MW3 scored 9.3. That little 0.1 made me change and I decided to buy MW3 instead. So why am I giving a 10/10 for MW3? Here is why: COD4 was a huge successI'm actually going to write a review against all negative critics. Here is why: COD4 was a huge success and I have to say it was really my first FPS I got addicted with and played COD4 for 1500 hours. COD4 was great and finally a GOOD welcoming change after CSS, Quake, Wolfenstein and TF engines. I remember though at that time people wanted to go back to WW2 style. So Treyarch decided to make WaW which ended up to be a pure disaster. Finally MW2 came out! Although it was a great game, lack of dedicated servers on PC did not make me want to play MW2 a lot. Therefore Treyarch then decided to release BLACK OP re-installing previous dedicated servers. I have to disagree with 85% of negative critics posted here. It is true that MW3 resembles a lot to MW2 but who cares? seriously? I know the franchise has been releasing a game every year? Get it over it lol again who cares? If they want to make money let them be! MW3 is, to me, an awesome game. I started it and I got addicted instantly. MW3 combines all previous years of experience this franchise has gained from COD4, WaW, MW2 and BLACK OP. Guns are really good, I haven't tried all of them yet - but so far rifles are well balanced. SMGs are SMGs. Melee got nerfed slightly to make it more realistic and finally many perks have been reviewed, changed and unlike in BLACK OP, akimbos are now only secondary guns. I am relieved to not see P90 akimbos anymore. As you would expect, MW3 maps are truly well designed. Although there are a lot of openings - you can't really "own" a map as MW3 is based on fast-pace style. It is good (gives new players the opportunity to kill and respawn is almost instant) and bad (for veteran players, it can be sometimes very frustrating - veterans can be killed from any corners) I am also very happy that Infinity Ward has introduced a whole new system in MP that allows you to level up a gun. I also enjoy new perks that can make you invisible to Air Support/Choppers. Finally, perhaps it is only me but I feel like MW3 really learnt from MW2 mistakes and Auto matchmaking on MW3 is fairly solid. The engine is really consistent. New modes such as Survival and Co op mission are really great! See I never really liked Co op mission. But MW3 made me change my opinion! Also if you are a "zombie-fan-kid" like I was in BLACK OP, you will love the survival mode Infinity Ward has introduced in MW3. In addition to people's critics: 1. No real innovation? I don't think so, I think there is when it comes down to perks, guns etc. Although it is minimal it doesn't really bother me like most raging kids. 2. Another cash? LOL so what? seriously who cares? 3. Bored of Campaign? At first I was very excited about MW3 SP, but the more you play the more bored you get. Why? Because you try to finish the game in 7 days. I'm pretty sure if you space out your gameplay you won't find Campaign as boring as most people think. It took me 8hrs to finish Campaign on Veteran mode. 4. MP is exactly the same as in MW2? Yea pretty much and I'm happy about it. BLACK OP wasn't much for me. Im more an Infinity Ward fan Expand

Interesting that everyone is so quick to bash the graphics and the linear design of this game when all shooters are like this. Modern Warfare 3 is an excellent new edition of the Modern Warfare series with new environments and an interesting storyline, however predictable at times. I will admit that I was a little disappointed that there seems to be less sniper missions than ever before (those were always my favorite) but that aside, the game is awesome. Special Ops missions are really fun, and survival mode is pretty cool too, though I haven't fully sampled all the different levels. In short, if you don't like this game, chances are you don't like shooters in general. There is nothing unlikeable about this game, and the complaint that there are no new mechanics to the game-play only attests to how polished the first Modern Warfare was when it came out. I'd like to point out that Black Ops actually took a lot of the same mechanics that Modern Warfare used, so it's not really fair to bash Modern Warfare 3 for using the same mechanics that it used in Modern Warfare seeing as how the mechanics were (and in my opinion, still are) so advanced when they were first introduced. I do wish they incorporated the running dive that Black Ops had though. Expand

And DICE goes on about the limitations of consoles, yet Naughty Dog proves them wrong by outshining them on PS3 graphically with Uncharted 3, even impressing some PC gamers - I'm sure. I was bored quite abruptly with Battlefield 3, the Single Player campaign was dull and the story was too similar to Black Ops' - the only thing I found any enjoyment in was playing Co-Op with a friend. On MW3 I was actually more impressed with the Presentation than I was expecting, especially considering that everything was running at 60 FPS around the even most intense moments. The rating here is unfair, it's become a trend to hate on something that's popular, and I can't say I'm surprised. There is so much content in this game, and so many hours of enjoyment. In regards to Single Player it ties up the story of the Modern Warfare trilogy, otherwise it's more of the same with lots of improvement, which is not a bad thing really. EA has treated their customers poorly by limiting their game to certain stores, and has said that they are going to ruin the Call Of Duty franchise once and for all like they did with Guitar Hero. So I'm not sure the haters of CoD know who they are following here, because this kind of attitude is damaging to the industry as whole. Expand

However, the campaign is great, the multiplayer is just as good as ever, if not better, and Survival mode is sweet if you have friends unlike me. Sure it may be a little repetitive in certain aspects but, its that same form of repetitive run-n-gun gameplay that attracts people to it each year. The campaign doesn't bring anything too new to the table, but thats doesn't take away from the fact its a fun story to play through filled with some exciting (although, predictable) set piece moments. In terms of co-op, I actually enjoyed spec ops more here in MW3 more than in MW2. At least in MW3 they actually feel like missions rather than challenges or something. Finally, there is the multiplayer, which is what the majority of buyers buy Call of Duty for. Odds are if you enjoyed MW2's multiplayer, your going to enjoy MW3's. The money system from Black Ops is gone, so your back to having to work to get all the attachments/camos for the guns. The maps sometimes feel cramped or too large, but still deliver the action that your used to. In short, MW3 doesn't change anything. But thats not a bad thing, because as the saying goes "If its not broke, don't try to fix it." I have had my complaints with Call of Duty games before and after sinking a few hours into each of MW3's modes I can say that it is without a doubt the most balanced and refined experience any of the Call of Duty games have ever delivered. The campaign is a non-stop adrenalin rush that keeps moving you from one crazy set piece to another. In multiplayer the game feels better than it ever has before with new point streaks and strike packages to help give the game a sense of balance that was sorely missed in MW2. Personally the highlight of the game comes in the new Spec-Ops survival mode. This new mode highlights what makes Call of Duty such a great gaming experience; online or split-screen co-op, fast past gun fights that increase in difficulty and a leveling structure similar to the online multiplayers offering allow this mode to become a very satisfying and addicting treat that will let players enjoy MW3 for a very long time.

AND It really is a shame what people are doing here by rating the game low simply because THEY do not care for Call of Duty at all. Most of the bad reviews have come from people who never actually played the game. I saw an article on IGN.com about how bad these reviews have been from users so i thought i would give my honest opinion on what i thought of the game and how i felt about the sad trolling and/or blatant misinformation that has been posted about this game. I was afraid that the game would not have been created!..I was also afraid that it would not feel as smooth as MW2 but they pulled together and got it done! I'm happy for sledgehammer and infinity ward for creating this excellent game. Either way..for such a BIG franchise, if they change it too much, people complain...then if they don't change enough..they complain. Expand

The game is very similar to MW2. So if you like MW2 you will be happy. This is my impression after 2 hours of play on several maps. The map complexity and detail is much improved over black ops with several good sniping lanes and multiple tiers for height advantage. I played over 250 hours of black ops and I think the hit detection is much better. The new "kill confirmed" game mode is interesting. In this mode you have to collect a dead player's dog tags to score points for the team. You can also collect your teams dog tags to keep the other team from scoring points.

At this point, COD is not going to change. If you thought you were going to boot up the disc and your character was going to be a small furry wolf shooting skittles and skipping on clouds, you're an idiot. The ground rules for COD are set a this point. You're going to kill people. You're going to have perks. You're going to have killstreaks. You're going to play game modes designed to kill people, to hold flags, to capture flags, or to blow stuff up. Sure there will be little wrinkles in each release, but at this point COD is less like a video game and more like a sport-- like football or basketball. The variety comes not in the changes to the rules, but in changes in the people you play against. Activision will not, and should not, dramatically reinvent this game every year. So IMO, the best you can do as a legitimate critic is to rate the game based on how the game plays, based on map design, and based on overall execution. Half these "zero" reviewers didn't even need to buy the game to complain about the things they're whining about, so they're not doing anyone a service with the reviews. If you don't like COD, just don't buy the game ever again and shut up.

So after all that, I'll say that the game appears to be an improvement over Modern Warfare 2. Gone are many of the player abuses from that game-- the constant grenade launching, commando knifing, etc. Only time will tell if new abuses will arise and how responsive Infinity Ward will be to fixing them. I like the addition of weapon proficiencies, where they have moved some of the weapon specific perks from previous installments. It's too early to tell what the full impact of the new killstreak system will be to gameplay, but the game does seem more frantic because so many killstreaks are active. That could hurt the quality of play in the long term. But the variety of having assault, support, and specialist killstreaks will also keep the game fresh so it's a balance. None of the new game types (kill confirmed, etc.) will supplant favorites like TDM or Domination but they do provide some interesting variety. The maps in this game are small, making this one of the fastest paced COD games, but it will take in the game to give a fair review of the map design. But for right now, I'd say this game is an 8 of 10.

The single player is an edge of your seat cinematic thrill ride much like the previous two Modern Warfare titles. The multiplayer takes what was great in the first two games and refines and tweaks the formula. There is a fair number of multiplayer maps ( I counted 16) and they are well designed. The devs also made improvements to the Spec Ops mode which further increases value you are getting for your money. I would recommend this game to anyone who is thinking about getting it. I am not sure where all of these bad user scores are coming from. If you have enjoyed the Modern Warfare titles in the past, you will enjoy Modern Warfare 3. No game deserves such low scores, unless it was an unfinished product. Are you people telling me that this is the same quality game as Rogue Warrior? I swear this is the biggest bandwagon on the Internet. I just wish people would stop such childish things. BATTLEFIELD AND CALL OF DUTY CANNOT BE COMPARED. Yes, they are both modern shooters with pretty graphics and good gameplay. Outside of that, though, there are NO notable similarities. COVERS MULTIPLAYER AND SPEC OPS ONLY

Anyways, the game is still just as good as previous iterations. The series has decayed over time, and what felt fresh and exciting in Call of Duty 4 feels generic in 2011. Despite this fatigue, it's just as addictive as ever. I'm already level 25, and it has barely been two days since it was released. The Spec Ops mode was fantastically addictive as well, and is the freshest and most fun part of the whole package. I've played the first few levels of single player, but haven't beaten it so I wouldn't want to talk about that aspect without completing it. All in all...buy this game if you are a casual shooter fan. If you are a hyper competitive multiplayer gamer, and find Battlefield 3 too "open" for your tastes, pick this up as well. I'd normally give this an 8.75, but since this scale wouldn't allow anything besides full numbers, and this terrible and suspicious backlash, I'm giving it a 10. I know it won't affect the score, I just want to point out the hard work people put into making this fun game and hopefully knock some sense into these idiots.

When you have been gaming for a few decenia like I have this is a very troubling development to observe and I hope it is one that will end soon, however I am fearful the opposite might actually be true and this is just the beginning of an actual movement of marketeers influencing kids into thinking they have but one choice when it comes to a certain type of game. Every big release seems to be positioned opposite a different game of the same genre and even before they have been released a battle of words ensues on the internet as to whose game is better, more advanced or prettier and of course the ever present used-so-often-it-lost-all-its-meaning "fanboy" crops up in every other sentence. What you guys need to realize is that you are not fighting your own battle, you are actively involved in the marketing of a product and are willfully doing the job someone normally gets paid to do. You can drink Coke AND Pepsi, you can wear Levis AND Dockers, you can eat Big Macs AND Whoppers, you can read Harry Potter AND War and Peace, watch The Shield AND The Wire, you can play Dark Souls AND Skyrim, CoD AND BF, etc. It is baffling to read 'reviews' on this site and at the same time be 100% certain the persons who wrote them did not play the game they're reviewing for 1 second but are actively repeating the same lines that have been said over and over again for hundreds of such 'reviews' in a row. The actual lines put into their mouths by the "other company" trying to outshine their competitors. I want metacritic to reflect the opinion of people playing a game and providing me with insight into their experience again, just as it used to be. Maps are alright but as a whole they are poor due to the total lack of variety. The story is very good though, and is the only reason this game gets a five. Graphics: Nothing fantastic. Nothing horrible. But at times it seemed glitchy and some of the cutscenes seemed unrealistic (planes flying through stuff). Its not awful but its far from perfect. 7.5/10
Multiplayer: Much like the gameplay but I just wanted to mention how little the maps seemed to have changed and appear to be simple rehases. A lot of work has gone in however to make sure that there is no part where you have long vision and firing possibilties to prevent strategy 5/10

There might be much of the same here for MW3 but it delivers. The game is hands down fun no matter who you are. All the new tweaks hit where it counts and the new game types are great such as kill confirmed. Brings out all the campers ;-)

you cant get a game as reliable as call of duty. it is a garaunteed good time whether by yourself or with friends. Sledghammer changed it up and i believe that they took the best of call of duty 4 and modern warfare 2 and combined them. they have made me a believer. i would have liked bigger maps, and more updated graphics. small complaints which is why it did not recieve a 10 from me

Sure there are only minor tweaks since MW1 and 2, but you don't see sports fans hating on yearly updates of sports games. As long as we - the consumers - continue to consume the Call of Duty series, Activision will continue to publish them. Last I checked, something like 4+ million people had logged on in the first day - on Xbox alone. Remember that the 360 is over the hill and it gets harder to push the limits of an aging system. Is it a 10? Probably not, but it's close and definitely the best of the series. People who purchased and enjoy the game for what it is (a mindless, yet highly addictive and well-polished action arcade shooter) need to help balance out all the negativity surrounding this release. Because one thing it is not: a 0.

Clearly haters (and Battlefield fans) gonna hate.

I have played the game (even bought the extortionate hardened edition - for elite access, but I guess that's for another gripe later if they ever get the service up and running) and where it is a very good and compelling campaign it helps to finish the story - isn't that what we've een waiting for?

I was looking forward to the Spec Ops side of the game - my favourite part if I'm honest and it hasn't let me down, it's challenging in places but not too much that I wanna throw the controller at the screen.

The biggest let down is (wait for the screams of derision) - multiplayer! Go ahead, scoff!!!

The reason I say it's a let down is that the illustrious makers have (again in my opinion) spent more time on the scenery rather than actual gameplay - too much on scenery, maybe that wouldn't be a problem if I could walk over a stone on the ground without being able to move (other than moving left or right to walk around it!).

Let's also just take a moment to mention weapons - now I'm no expert (only in my own head) but as far as I am aware a shotgun (no matter what kind) doesn't need nor can or should it be fitted with a silencer not to mention the fact that it is not a SNIPER RIFLE and therefore CANNOT kill from great distance with one shot - hell, in accordance with COD a .50 calibre sniper rifle needs at least 3-5 shots to put a man down!

Hey, it's not just COD that falters with the weapons but that's just the way I feel after all the hype and the wait for such a poor show of what should have been a fantastic game. Thanks if you have waited until the end to berate my opinion - guess I'm off to play some BF3.

MW3 is the more balanced game, and may be the most balanced COD title to date. The game has a bit more detail as far as graphics go. Less explosive damage is a welcome addition to MW3, as well as no commando. Nice weapon balance (apart from the Type 95, and the Striker). On a negative note, the maps are crap. They're the campiest maps ive ever played, and they are flat out boring aside from hardhat, village & dome. Lack of innovation, & poor map design drops my rating for this game to a 7. The only innovation amounting to a slight reskin in a different colour. While this might allow Activision to churn out a game every year, it's gotten to the point where the franchise feels stale and tasteless. There were times I wondered if the level designers competed with each other over how many explosions and collapsing buildings they could cram into each level, and it's clear to see the drop in quality after Activision prudently fired the majority of Infinity Ward's developers. Setting aside the linear on-rails progression, the casual hand-holding and the 4 hour completion time - I can deal with those annoyances, as long as the game is fun and engrossing. Unfortunately Call of Duty 9..or whatever number they're on now isn't. Throw in the weak, unrealistic gun sounds, the whack-a-mole rudimentary AI, unremarkable missions and the generic 'America saves the world all over again' storyline and you're dealing with quite a turd. How reviewers are giving this game a perfect 10/10 is honestly beyond me, and why this game (and this game alone) retails at 10% above the price of every other game confounds me even further. I would honestly rather play through the original Call of Duty again. At least that game provided an emotional attachment, as it wasn't based on pure fabrication. Expand

The new killstreak system isn't that drastic a change, and doesn't do much to change the game. It only slightly adjusts the individual users experience with the game. I hate to say it, but Black Ops was the better game for many reasons including: Better maps, better modes, and an overall fresher take on the series. If anyone out there needs to know what shooter to pick up this holiday season, then my honest answer is Battlefield 3. They delivered a smart, and deeply rewarding multiplayer component this year that improves over its predecessors in every way. It's also worth mentioning that the community behind BF3 is much more mature and tolerable on the whole when compared to the 'typical' **** hole COD player. I'm giving it a 2 because the survival mode is entertaining. Of course, we've all played horde modes before, and that modes fun will not last forever. At the end of the day, this game just didn't try hard enough. The only problem with this series is that it's based on a very popular genre, the FPS. Once people start getting annoyed of shooting, there is really nothing to turn too. The market is already flooded with FPSs and I'm afraid we are at the spike in terms of intrest in FPS games because of it. Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
