Modern Warfare 3 is the exact same game as Modern Warfare 2. That's not to say it's a bad game. In fact, that's far from the truth. MW3 is a fine game that will appeal to the same people who enjoyed MW2. However, there is not enough content in MW3 to justify it being released as an entirely new game in the franchise. Very little has changed from MW2 and the original MW. The graphics, impressive in 2007, are lack-luster and dated now, kill-streaks are still too big a part of the game (as they have been ever since MW2), there isn't enough emphasis on gun-on-gun gameplay, and the single-player is the shortest in the series (which is a shame considering I am someone who has enjoyed the storyline in the franchise). Simply put, MW3 adds barely anything new to the franchise and everything IW and Sledgehammer did add could have been patched or added into MW2. Expand

for real, this is the worst game i've ever played. Not only is it a copy paste of mw2 and mw, it is a sheer insult to the intelligence of the human race. The amount of mindless people buying activision's crap is ASTOUNDING. I can no longer trust the reviews of any site. Just play cod 2, it was better than this garbage.

the game is not bad but the xbox 360 cannot handle the game.
poor graphics on xbox360,and poor gameplay also.
when i have played this game on ps3, i was really thrilled.
online is not as good on xbox live than on psn.
Looks like call of duty has gone with the wrong lead platform.
    PS3 it should have been.
xbox 360 really sucks to the core

Boring story, graphics are just TERRIBLE muddy looking. SAVE YOUR $$$. Nothing more than a simple Michael Bay Film. This game is absolute garbage. The campaign just felt absolutely forced and was completely forgettable by the end of it. Spec Ops is trash because zombies in WaW and Black Ops was just so much better.

It's way too fast passed, to the point where the only way to get a high killstreak is by camping in a corner. In addition to that, the game has become even more about who sees the other player first/ who has the better connection. There's hardly any skill involved. WTF right? what a useless thing to add to a game. it's just going to make the game more unfair as will the stacked killstreaks. running is very akward and the shotguns suck. spec ops is no where near the level of zombies despite it being more complex. i played the game for 8-9 hours and honestly i can say i will stick with black ops. might even return it unless they patch some stuff out in upcoming weeks. to sum it up all in one word: MW2.5
The only thing that has been added to the game was a new campaign, some weapons and a "weapon-progression" system. The graphics is still the same, lame old repetitive sounds from MW2(just new for the weapons) and still the same ol Run-n-Gun idea from COD 4.

Play MW 2 but add different maps and a couple new guns, that's all it is. At this point the only thing keeping the series alive is the new update to Spec Ops which I found very enjoyable, yet not enjoyable enough to prevent my eyes from bleeding over this so called "story". The story is nothing more than a Michael Bay movie with the production fees equal to the of the cost of Bill Gates house. And I'm talking about his house that makes NASA look like preschoolers playing with some Legos. The story doesn't waste anytime in shoving you straight into battle. You walk down some streets, shoot some guys, explosions, repeat. By the time you get through a few more levels a "big" plot point occurs which is supposed to "shock" the gamer. It doesn't. The characters are very stiff in every way, which doesn't help the story at all. When characters are supposed to feel sorry, they sound the same. When there supposed to feel relieved, they sound the same. I'm looking at you Price. All in all, no matter how much we hate it, the odds of the CoD series dying soon is about as likely as Activision admitting they have enough money and they don't need anymore. Expand

Activision doesn't bother to make a new game engine. It continually copies the same game year in and year out. I'm tired of spending 60 bucks for a carbon copy of a game I played last year. I said to myself I would never buy a COD game again after Black ops. I'm tired of being fooled by activision. I DID play this game at my friends house. A lot of my friends are still under Activisions spell. They don't realize they are getting ripped off. The game is essentially the same as Modern Warfare 2. The campaign is the same, and so is the MP. The survival mode is new, but nothing special. PEOPLE NEED TO STOP BUYING COD GAMES SO ACTIVISION WILL MAKE A NEW GAME ENGINE!!!!

If people keep buying COD games that reuse the same engine, Activision will keep making a carbon copies of their games. We need to send Activision a message and teach them a lesson that we won't fall for their money hungry tactics anymore. From this moment forward, promise yourself that you wont:

Buy a Carbon copy of a COD game. DON"T BUY NEXT years COD!!

You wont pay 15 dollars for four maps

You won't wait online at midnight to buy a rehashed game

The list can go on and on.. but the bottom line is, Activision will keep using their customers if they keep buying this crap. Stand up and don't take it anymore. As gamers, we deserve better. Activision hasn't changed their engine since 2007. Thats complete garbage.

IMO, I felt W@W & Black Ops were rushed, unfinished, unpolished, & poorly made, & all the negatives that were in those two games, have resurfaced in MW3, and then some. A whole lot of and then some. I'm not going to go into all the problems, but trust me. It may look like a MW game, it may sound like MW, heck, it may even smell like MW, but this trash doesn't deserve to hold the title that has come to represent an overall excellent gaming experience as far as FPS go. Once you get into this game & checking under the hood, You'll see things don't work like they should. So, so many things are just "off" and broken.
Everyone is intitled to their opinions, but to all game reviewers that have said "This is the best Call of Duty yet." I'm sorry but either you're Full of Poop, got paid for your endorsement of this game, or have never played a video game before in your life. Yeah, I'm attacking journalistic credibility I'm so P.O. right now.

I've never bothered to write a review about anything, but I am so letdown, so regretting that I bought this garbage, & so disheartened with the C.O.D. series at this point, I have to say something & hope someone will listen. I know a lot of people worked hard to make this game, but bottom line, obviously the heart & soul of the IW crew that made Call of Duty: Modern Warfare such an event in the gaming world, left due to the fallout with Activision, and they took with them the know how & quality of the series. I cannot believe the hype for a game that is basically the same thing over and over again. Sorry but I played this game 3 years ago, nothing new. Graphics are dated, I have seen better, sounds are just pathetic and don't get me started on the horrible campaing mode. Save your cash if you already have Cod 4, you will not miss out on anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Be advised if you not a massive fan of MP this is rental. Very short campaign locations different but little else. This is an insult to anyone looking for a decent single player experience. MW1 was the pinnacle I'm afraid. Also I'm informed by friends elite does not work.

This lazy development process needs to be stopped. My advice is rent to find out if it is for you or not but with other more worthy games out there such AC, Skyrim and Skyward sword to name a few this poor effort is an afternoon rental at best.

For example: one said reviewer also gave Battlefield 3 10/10 twice!!?! and MW3 0/10! and there are many other accounts of similar happenings, just check a few user's other reviews if you have the time. I have been playing Call of Duty since COD3 on the 360, I also own a PS3 and have played a lot of MW2 and Black Ops on both platforms. For me (as I'm sure it is for most) it is all about the multiplayer, though I have some fond memories of hiding in my Ghillie suit in MW1. In my opinion, there is simply no other multiplayer experience like it. It is the closest thing to digital crack. The gameplay is very tight and fast paced, and it feels so satisfying when you are doing well (also terrible when you are on the back foot, this is part of the magic) With the leveling, the challenges, and the accolades, it feels like you are being rewarded every time you play. It's a great feeling the first time around, but there is a sense of diminishing returns after you prestige. Not to worry, because the gameplay is so much fun. I have played 11 hours of online MW3 already and had many unforgettable moments that will stick with me. The new maps are awesome. Kill Confirmed is a great new multiplayer mode, which is so addictive now when I play any other mode I am already conditioned to look for the tags. I have a few criticisms: I have already noticed a few lag switchers in game, but I promptly saved a video from the theatre of their antics, and reported them. I hope that Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer Games will deal with them accordingly. The fact that Elite wasn't working on launch date was a big fail. Yes the game engine is old now, but it runs at 60fps and is smoother than a baby's buttocks.

Despite any shortcomings, I support this game and the developers who put all their hard work into it. I just hope lots of other fans come out of the woodwork and say their piece.

Most of their criticisms are the "small maps","lack of vehicles", and "lack of destruction". If you want those things play Battlefield and stop hating on a game because it outsold yours. Honestly I have been playing COD since the original and it has consistently set the bar for first person shooters especially for console players. I would have purchased this game even if it had no single player campaign at all. I find it extremely hard to play single player when the multiplayer is this addictive. In my opinion a game would have to be completely broken and unplayable to warrant a "0" rating and this game is far from that. The shooting mechanic is still the best on the market and firefights are always frantic and exciting. Personally I love the close quarters combat. There is no better feeling than turning a corner, catching a glimpse of 2 enemies heading your direction and having the skills to get both kills when they have the upperhand. So Im sorry to all the users on here that played MW3 for a couple hours online, got slaughtered by me, lost all self esteem and rated this game a "0". The multiplayer is top notch but I wish they would have incorporated 4 players into Survival Mode. Also I'd hoped that playing Survival Mode would help to rank me up in multiplayer but they are 2 separate things. If there were some kind of reward to playing Special Ops that would carry over to your multiplayer that would be great. The beta for BF3 convinced me to go with MW3 (not to mention most of my friends were getting this game).

I've got about a dozen hours into the MP and feel that it's very comparable to MW2, but with some interesting (but good) changes and better graphics. I realize a lot of people are complaining that it's similar to previous installments. My response is, "yeah, and??". They're supposed to be similar. You can't make sweeping changes to the game and expect to keep the core audience. This particular formula has made COD the king of the hill of first person shooters. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The campaign to this point (about 5 hours in) isn't great but is definitely a step up from MW2. I'm playing through on veteran and am thoroughly enjoying myself with it. As with all COD campaigns, the gameplay and shooting is phenomenal. I find myself not overly interested in the storyline, but if I want a story, I'll read a book. I play games for gameplay and fun, and this campaign delivers on both accounts.

My favorite part of the game is definitely spec-ops. I've got about 15 hours into survival mode and am overly impressed. This (imo) is what makes this worth the purchase. As I mentioned earlier, I've been playing COD forever and don't really care too much about the MP any longer. This mode, however, will keep me wanting more. Single player or coop (coop is defintely more fun). I haven't even had time for the spec-ops missions yet, and I really enjoyed them in MW2.

Overall, this game is about a 9.25 for me. It's not an all time great, but is worth the price of admission. I can't speak of BF3, which a lot of people seem to be whining about on here, but I can't imagine it offers more as a whole. I really think it's a shame that there are so many degenerates posting reviews on a game. A zero, really? A 2, really? Even if you hate COD, rating it as a 6 or 7 will get your point across. But marking it a 5 or under is just plain hating and has no business here. A lot of us read the user reviews on sites like Metacritic to guage whether or not we should get a certain game, and the dumba$$es marking the score down are doing all of us a disservice. Please grow up!

All the colours are pale grey or orange, and the graphics bleed and pixelate. The soldiers do not even look like soldiers, they look like R2D2. They're way too tall and skinny and dressed in sci-fi gold uniforms. They waddle around like cheap action figures and it looks nothing like human movement. The guns shoot like laser guns and sound like powerless laser guns. And not a bit of recoil on the weapons.

And the maps. Maybe the most important part. The previous 2 installments had some great maps, if there were weak maps they certainly were not broken. And they contained some element of modern design, within cities or landscapes where modern warfare would occur. They were not very realistic maps but contained thoughtful design. The maps of mw3 could not have been a map pack, they are terrible, it is a completely different game. The maps are a random assortment of pipes and corridors. There is no scale to the soldiers and the corridors are nothing like anything you'd ever imagine for modern warfare. Every map is exactly the same. Take the smallest black ops map, add 4 more corridors for every three, and make sure it is a random assortment of industrial junk. There is no thought to the maps whatsoever and no skill involved in the game because of it.

This game is like stepping back into time to poor Halo knockoffs. There is nothing resembling Modern Warfare here. For those that complain of BF3 fanboys, well, the point is obvious. BF3 offers the best multiplayer gameplay since Left 4 Dead. As for a modern warfare game BF3 offers human soldiers, scaled environments, balanced maps, strategic structuring of teams, and vehicles. MW3 offers R2D2 warfare, no strategy, and consumerism. It is obvious which game is better, and there must be comparisons to BF3 because it is the best warfare multiplayer to date. MW3 only gets such great reviews because of Wall Street business tactics. It's an absurd joke on all of us who spent money on this game. I should have purchased Man vs Wild or something.

Simply outstanding. Great balance between Modern Warfare 2 and Black OPs. The maps are the best yet and keeps you coming back for more. Loving ever minute of it, and that's just the multiplayer. Single player is short but sweet and spec ops will keep you going do hours on end, facing endless waves of juggernauts and choppers. Tremendous sequel

If they would have changed MW3 anymore it would have been a different game. When I bought it i knew it would 'feel the same'- but that's what I want! Everyone complaining, don't tell me you didn't watch gameplay footage and trailers before buying the game, you all knew what to expect. Your bad internet connection in relation to servers is not a reason to give the game a low score. Furthermore if you do not like FPS games to begin with, don't tarnish the titles name since you have a hard time with the point and shoot mechanic- not for this game, but for all future FPS games. I play Final Fantasy to save the world, I play Halo to jump around, Gears to blow people up, and CoD because its CoD! Lastly, remember that its always gameplay over graphics. Expand

The same goes for CoD fanboys that played their first few games, died a lot, and felt the need to displace their rage on here. You all need to grow up, drop your laughably pitiful elitist attitudes, and stop trying to compare two shooters that are virtually incomparable.

Now, with all that out of the way, this game honestly deserves the critic rating it got. The way that sledgehammer changed the way you get unlocks for guns, and the addition of gun perks for guns is truly one of the things that makes this game shine. I loved the unlocking aspect of MW2, i would grind through all the unlocks for guns in MW2 because it was fun, and rewarding. MW3 just amplified this aspect, and it makes the game extremely rewarding, and gives it an extremely high replay value through all the prestiges. As for the gameplay, it feels almost identically to modern warfare 2 in the character movement aspect, and as for the guns, it feels familiar, but not the exact same. Guns now have more recoil than MW2 had in all aspects, even if you put kick on any gun, there is still no gun that could be considered anything near a MW2 ACR laserbeam. The maps of the game are smaller, which makes for some insane action. Granted, there are some more gameplay styles that can be used for larger maps, but the smaller maps almost turn this game into a full on twitch shooter, with extreme fast paced action and frantic spawn switching. The spawns in the game right now are a little on the crazy side, but does anyone remember the insane spawning problems black ops had on release? Who says sledgehammer won't fix this like Treyarch did? C'mon people, the game hasn't been out for a week yet and you've yet to see how supportive Sledgehammer is going to be. I'm sure they're going to add in tweaks, and they'll only make the game more refined, and more enjoyable.

All in all, the game has great composure, and sure, there's some stuff to work on. But there's no extremely pressing imbalance issues or anything. The game is still all-round fun, fast, and rewarding, just like a Call of Duty game should be.

It seems much more realistic with only a few bullets needed to register a kill, almost like a mix between hardcore and regular game modes on the previous versions. A game with an exciting campaign mode and new and inventive on-line game play. MW3 keeps you on the edge of your seat during campaign mode with its breathtaking action sequences and sharp shooting. While the on-line mode is more challenging and intense than its predecessor, it tends to lag from time to time which makes things slightly more difficult. All round a good game with no major flaws.

Excellent Game. It is not MW2. But it is similar. Lets face it, that is what we are looking for when we buy COD. We are not expecting something brand new, because we buy COD because we loved the previous, because of the game. Therefore this should be similar.

The game seems to improve on the multi-player I am accustomed to as well bringing the balance MW2 needed as well is getting core mechanics right which is what Black Ops needed; but where the game falls flat for me is the maps. I don't like the new direction of the maps they all seem very similar and feel like an ant tunnel. They just seem like mindless running about with no strategy or structure and there seems to too many routes and entrances to any position and there is a serious lack of the verticality MW2 maps brought to the table. The spawns only exacerbate the situation and are at times extremely poor. For some reason they also seem to have backtracked on the scaling; poor scaling of objects, buildings, doors, and character models can be frustrating. The dislike of almost all the maps is an irredeemable factor for me and no amount of map packs can fix that which is very unfortunate because the game could of been the best one yet. This is also the first time I bought the hardened edition which only makes it worse. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't like smearing a game like this. But honestly, early previews suggested nothing exciting about this game, and the biggest aspect of its appeal to me was its story; and while I have enjoyed my time with it playing with my friends, and I have a modicum of fun with it, I certainly agree that there is nothing here which hasn't been done before, specifically in Modern Warfare 2. This game needs to be the last time Activision rests on its laurels, lest next year be the Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock/ Tony Hawk Ride of this series. People say its the Madden of shooters, and this years is that in spades. While I haven't finished Campaign yet, so far its been a largely predictable bit of set pieces, retreading the same old gameplay "variety" we've had since Modern Warfare is a bit trite. I started the story on veteran and have had little difficulty at all moving through it. The story seems ridiculous the more I think of it -- the notion that all of the world would go to war over one American body found at a terrorist attack? We couldn't disavow this guy? All the footage of the four OTHER guys, one of which, at least, Russian? (Don't get me wrong, I felt that sequence in the airport was very powerful, and a great device for the story, and the consequences were handled well enough too. I felt something seeing suburbs burning as Ramirez.) But I digress. So I will say lastly for the story so far is that the sequence which has been most controversial so far, was not at all necessary, and is rendered less effective even for how out of place it is, as there are no other children in the story, or any where. So I feel this fell flat, to be frank, like they only included it to A) Try and cram drama forcibly down our throat, or B) Tried to cram controversy down our throat. This game plays solidly, and has plenty of bro worthy moments, but no more or less than any other Call of duty ever has in its online play. THis is fine. And the fact that millions have bought it, thats fine too. But it is sad, in a way. As you see I feel this game was mostly phoned in, and if you feel like Professional reviewers were paid off , I feel similarly. The spec ops mode is unorginal, but I had fun with MW2s, and I enjoy survival, as well. I will continue to play Multiplayer, just to hang and compete with friends. But I will not pay another dime for dlc, I will not get Elite. The changes I can note are only two fold: Grenade launchers don't kill in one shot, and strike packages. This was overhyped. Halo 2, was hyped about right, maybe a lil bit over. But not as much. Expand

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
