The new MW is the same as the old MW. Just pretend you are in a movie that consists of all the James Bond films' action scenes, randomly strung together, with a few war movie classics thrown in for good measure. I realize that this is probably all many people want but I prefer a game.

For some reason, I'm especially bothered by MW3's continued, pretentious use of famous and out-of-context, quotes. Quoting MLK is especially perverse, and this is why I'll give it a score of 0 rather than the 5 or 6 it probably deserves. MP is still solid but hasn't changed much since MW1. A certain other shooter is leaps and bounds ahead now, both graphically and game play wise.

This is obviously MW2 with some new perks/weapons and maps. The graphics are horrible. Words alone just cannot describe how bad this game is so i'll leave it to this.

The first thing that struck me playing this game was just how shamelessly similar everything was to Call of Duty 4.. and 5.. and 6.. and 7 for that matter as well. This goes beyond simply re-using the same 13 year old quake 3 engine; the art direction, textures, weapons and environments all seem to have been re-used. The only innovation amounting to a slight reskin in a different colour. While this might allow Activision to churn out a game every year, it's gotten to the point where the franchise feels stale and tasteless. There were times I wondered if the level designers competed with each other over how many explosions and collapsing buildings they could cram into each level, and it's clear to see the drop in quality after Activision prudently fired the majority of Infinity Ward's developers. Setting aside the linear on-rails progression, the casual hand-holding and the 4 hour completion time - I can deal with those annoyances, as long as the game is fun and engrossing. Unfortunately Call of Duty 9..or whatever number they're on now isn't. Throw in the weak, unrealistic gun sounds, the whack-a-mole rudimentary AI, unremarkable missions and the generic 'America saves the world all over again' storyline and you're dealing with quite a turd. How reviewers are giving this game a perfect 10/10 is honestly beyond me, and why this game (and this game alone) retails at 10% above the price of every other game confounds me even further. I would honestly rather play through the original Call of Duty again. At least that game provided an emotional attachment, as it wasn't based on pure fabrication. Expand

Wow, this did not turn out at all like I expected. I didn't want to believe it was just more of the same even though the signs were deffinately there. The franchise that has rules the FPS genre for years now has finally turned into nothing but a cash-milking machine.

Game only took 9 months to make, where as the average COD game takes 19 months to make, I knew MW3 wasnt gonna be great, maybe Modern Warfare 2.5, but didnt even do that. Call of Duty 4? nope, COD4 was better, this game should be considered Call of Duty 3.5. Multiplayer maps seem like the developers just threw stuff together, had no vision for maps, all together trashed game.

Twelve months ago, the CEO of Activision, who was bred in a test tube with fertilisation donations from the risen ghost of hitler, called for another game to lengthen the turgid slick of mediocrity that is Call of Duty. Featuring another uninspired campaign of betrayal, shooting foreigners, on rails gunning, and controversy, (think car bombs in London and twelve year old girls) interspersed with witless dialogue and explosions that appeal to the lowest common denominator, this game can only be described as terrible.

It seems no effort was made to make a good game. The graphics are poor in comparison to well made recently released games that will cost you the same amount of money, the campaign is a recycled version of the last 4 years worth of call of duty's. The multiplayer is EXACTLY the same as every other game in the series, but with a collection of new, poorly concieved maps and ideas to create weapon imbalance. In short this game's only redeeming feature is that if you put it in the microwave on high, I believe it will crackle up in a small light show.

Don't get Modern warfare 3, you worked too hard for that money, and you don't want to encourage that lazy bunch of developers. It seems the most effort they made with this game was to beg for people to overlook the lack of quality and give the game a good review. This is a company that had a press release with one of their Modern Warfare 2 map packs, stating that a price rise from the usual 800 MSP per map pack, to 1200 MSP, is in the interests of consumers. Stay away from this game, I have it on good advice that it is one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, gathering strength with every sale.

Important note: The game features a car bombing in London, and, while I'm all for poorly timed walks of the dangerous knife edge that is taste and decency, capitilising on devastating terrorist attacks to create the illusion of storyline and plot, and to generate anger out of teenage boys, it must be noted that the scene is handled with the sensitivity and delicacy of a drug mule's full cavity search at an Indonesian airport. Also PARIS LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THAT!! The furthest the developers must have gone in their 'research' was the McDonald's nearest to the 'development' 'studio' , while their leftover MW2 disks had the 3's printed over them.

The developers sank as low as to beg for good reviews (absolutely shamless) - originally the user score sat at less than 2.5 - now, sadly, it is rising because of the flock of sheep that follow the developer around blindly. It is not worth 3.

Being that MW3 used the same engine and nearly all the same people worked on the game I expected it to be similar to MW2 for the most part. Maybe a MW2.5 even, and I was ok with that because the maps and the game play were really solid. You had a good mix of maps, meaning that the cartography of the maps were balanced in what you could do. If you liked run and gun you could play that style. If you liked to snipe, the map layouts on some maps were brilliant for that but they did include areas that you could run and gun. One map like this would be Fuel in MW2...minus the rock you could hide in obviously. Fast forward to today and as someone that enjoyed sniping, I feel that the cartography of the maps in MW3 are so boxy and corridor like that the only style of play style that is effective is run and gun. The elevation difference in the maps just doesn't seem to be that of the MW2 map Estate or in MW Creek. I'm not saying there needs to be open maps like MW2 Wasteland but maps like Fuel, Creek, Estate, High Rise, Afghan, Derail, Rundown and Underpass would be nice to have in the multiplayer. I feel like those maps had more of an organic feel to them and there were wide open areas and some not so open areas so you could snipe if you wanted but you could also run and gun. This lack of elevation change makes a lot of the multiplayer maps seem like the same thing over and over again just difference scenery. Out of the current set of maps there isn't one that I feel has that, oh this is going to be a classic map down the road and that isn't good from a multiplayer standpoint. Hopefully with DLC they can go back to the drawing board and rethink their cartography to give the maps a bit more of what they did in past games. Expand

It is a polished MW2. Not a new game worthy of a new title. Everything in the game is stale and unoriginal and a let down for an enthusiast of all the COD titles and FPS shooters. MW3 is a good game. But not the great game that the new Infinity Ward could have produced. Now for some nit-picking on my part- Multiplayer level design resembles Nuke Town on every single map. It concentrates the players in choke points with very few vantage points. There is no strategy except for killstreaks and perks which eliminates any objective for playing a game type. The wide fluctuation of connectivity between players is also dismal and favors frustration. Half the time I have a killer connection. Half the time there is a 2 sec delay. I have a consistent

I enjoyed MW1 multiplayer a lot, MW2 wasn't quite as good due to the focus on killstreaks but was an good game none-the-less, but MW3 does not live up to the Modern Warfare name at all. I was very disappointed in Black Ops for many reasons, namely the amount of lag and the map design that promoted a camping mentality to do well and I'm sad to say this has carried over to MW3 somehow. MW2,I enjoyed MW1 multiplayer a lot, MW2 wasn't quite as good due to the focus on killstreaks but was an good game none-the-less, but MW3 does not live up to the Modern Warfare name at all. I was very disappointed in Black Ops for many reasons, namely the amount of lag and the map design that promoted a camping mentality to do well and I'm sad to say this has carried over to MW3 somehow. MW2, among it's faults, was a good, fast paced game that actually rewarded people that moved around the map, and not in the corner to corner sence. As a 'run and gunner' I pride myself on being able to rely on my reflexes and perception, not on the amount of patience it takes to sit in a corner waiting for someone to run past and I did well as a runner. In Black Ops and MW3 this was lost in the combination of corners, choke points and bad map design. I don't understand how a team with many staff that built MW1 and 2 could create a game so closely resembling Black Ops which is made by a different developer. Everything from bad spawn points to shotty map design to lag that shouldn't be there to bad hit detection and even the graphic design mirrors Black Ops so closely that you could be forgiven for not knowing there are two different developers.
If they had taken the MW2 architecture and netcode system, added the new maps and weapons and all that jazz and left it, it would be a decent game, but at the moment the only saving grace is the fairly interesting spec ops.
The fact that I still actively play MW2 but am already sick of this game and it's dodgey calls and decisions shows just how dissimilar they are even though they are direct sequels, then add on the hype about lack of camping spots and choke points that came from the developers themselves and it almost boils down to a blatant lie to the consumer in that regards (much like Black Ops and it's oh so many promised features that where never fleshed out).
As a parting word, all I can say is the multiplayer is a hassle to get through not the fun experience it is meant to be and a practise in frustration and my private, offensive vocabulary every time I play a match.

With a bleak selection of weapons and perk choices It feels more and more like expansion pack territory in all but name. I would love to of been able to give this the usual score of 8+ out of 10 but with such a pedestrian franchise update and the many problems, lag, poor hit detection, no Elite Access, (Paid For Hardened Edition) no Founder content accessible and irredeemable avatar DLC, I feel giving a score of 5+ here is too generous for the problems faced, I had high hopes but low expectations coming in, but not this low. Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer has no charm in my view. The maps feel rushed and unpolished compared to classics such as Backlot, Crossfire and Crash (Cod4) and the game play still has the usual frustrating broken points that came with its predecessor. Hit-markers are still a massive issue. Shotguns in particular- I have, on many occasions, one shot kill someone to the body from a good 5-10 metres away. But then i've also had multiple times where someone has been point blanc in front of me and i've shot them in the face only to watch in amazement as they don't die. Don't get me wrong there are some occasional fun times to be had. But one game on MW3 leaves me more frustrated then I ever was in my whole time of playing Cod 4 or even Battlefield 3. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Modern Warfare 3 stands alone in what is the largest expansion pack ever released, and here is why that is so. (Minor, ever so Minor Spoilers) First the campaign - As many people know, Modern Warfare series has had some, short, but decent single player options, from the first time you **** your gun on the hull of the rocking ship in Call Of Duty 4 to the epic invasion of the USA by Russia in Modern Warfare 2. The Single Player has never disappointed in its cinematic offerings and didn't disappoint in MW3 with the Defense of New York being the set piece opener, but after this exciting opener, the single player fizzled out, maybe resurfacing this excitement at a few, extremely short set pieces. One with a Zero G fight in a plane crashing to the ground and a James Bond esque level in a Diamond Mine. The conclusion to the Makarov - Price story sees the campaign fall flat on its face. I found myself asking, "Is that it?" and also, the little attempt to conjure up some emotion does not deliver on what it should. With the gameplay having a good variation, from being on the ground running from a tank to being up in the air in a AC-130 but these sections last for a short while then end, leaving the fun at the last checkpoint. The orchestra of Hans Zimmer (a personal favorite of mine) seems to fit greatly, with music that harkens back to the first Transformer film but It is unfortunately dround by the gunfire and screaming, usually, I wouldn't get annoyed at this as, after all you are in a war zone, but the lack of an option to control the audio settings for Music, Effects and Speech left a bitter taste in my mouse. It seems infinity ward have taken out most of the user control. I'd give the campaign a 5 in comparaison with the other MW campaigns, and a 7 compared to most military shooter campaigns. After finishing the somewhat dull conclusion to a story arc I personally really enjoyed, I turned my attention to MULTIPLAYER, the main part of the Modern Warfare series.

Entering my first game, I picked my class, and was dropped straight into a match of Team Deathmatch.
I immeadiatly found the multiplayer game to be exactly the same as MW2's. I shrugged this off, seeking some change which I found in the form of how the kill streaks have been turned into point streaks now, which allows all people to have an even chance of gaining a support, attack or special package. After a few games I found myself distraught, the spawning system is broken, I found myself at one point spawning in exactly the same place as I died and spawn killing is rife within the maps. The maps..
The Maps are dull, and no overgrowns, no classic maps came out of the map rotor which I found depressing and the lack of large maps leans towards run and gun gameplay giving no chance for any snipers to have a chance. At least they took out stopping power and juggernaut. In Black Ops, I found myself enjoying the option of being able to create custom gamemodes, with myself creating a zombie game type with different types of zombies that could move slow, fast, have more health or less. I found you could do the same so I went to create the zombie game type all over again only to find Infinity Ward have taken out the ability to change class attributes! Its like Infinity Ward have taken everything Treyarch have done and removed it which is fair enough but when some of those things are good, why bother taking them out? I'd give the multiplayer a 6.

    I have been awaiting the arrival of MW3 for ages, and in my personal opinion I am really enjoying it, there are pros and cons to every game out there but I still believe the pros to this game outweigh the cons;

1: Campaign - Now I haven't played much of the single player being a fan of the multiplayer aspect. BUT from the offset the game has thrown you into a very visually impressive location, (despite the dated engine it is run on) they have made the best use of the tech they are using, the story mode has never been long and to be honest I quite like it as the story doesn't outstay its welcome. Although I would like a longer campaign to immerse myself into I'd be worried that Sledgehammer/Infinity Ward would be fluffing the campaign with un needed levels that would essentially bore a person, or leave them a little confused! Campaign = 5/10 - little short, but spectacular visuals (despite tech)

2: Spec Ops - ok I see where most people are coming from here, Zombies was fun very much enjoyed it especially with 3 of your mates joining in the amusement, Spec Ops Survival I feel is a little more focused, so does take away the "party" feel about it. but I personally prefer the focused team work and the joint need to work together to get to the next wave. the missions are fun and do test the players ability to work as a team. I'd have liked to have seen a little story to the mission modes rather than random scenarios but all in all a good way to waste time when there are only 2 of you online. again my personal opinion is that while Zombies it a great game, the Spec op Survival and missions allow a more focused team game and feels a little more "hardcore".

Spec Ops = 7/10 a fun focused team based game, feels like a game in its own right.

3: Multiplayer - I have lost MANY hours to MW2 and have enjoyed every second of it! MW3 should be no different. The maps are cleverly manufactered to allow for a more skirmish based gaming experience. I absolutely LOVE the idea of Support streaks that allow the not so amazing shooters to feel they are achieving something while playing! I like that they have kept the basic concept of levelling up from MW2 and that they have made prestiging a longer task. the only negative I can come up with at this time is that the game itself is not visually different, (nephew walks into room - "oh you are playing MW2" "No this is MW3" "Oh it looks the same" hmmm not a goo thing to hear really? bit like buying an iphone 4s. Great idea but they look exactly the same as the iphone 4... how is that going to show people that your phone is better than theirs if they look the same. Same as MW2 and MW3, an upgraded game which you can see when you are playing the game with the tweaks they have put into it. but as a spectator or someone walking past they wouldn't be able to tell this is a new game! other than that I love it. Love the maps and still have as always the COD bug

Multiplayer = 7/10 - Love the whole experience, but how can people walking into you room know you are better than them for owning the newest CODMW?

So here is the deal, I bought this game for the multiplayer, who didn't, it doesnt mean I won't play single player or anything else, just that my main goal is to enjoy multiplayer. CoD has offered a very specific flavor of multiplayer that I have enjoyed, but this iteration actually felt off, not quite as good as MW2 or Black Ops. More importantly, the maps for multiplayer, are bland, mostly too hectic and feel ugly. I haven't found a single map that I have enjoyed greatly. That is not a good start. Even remade maps would have served better. The Single player so far is boring, disjointed, and already I feel disconnected from the characters I love, Soap and Price. They don't have the same flavor, and the (SPOILER) guy meant to protect the Russian president being shot by Makarov..... that felt rehashed and boring, I'm not sure I will even bother finishing single player. Survival has been enjoyable, but its just like another form of zombies, good but in the end nothing unique at all. In the end Ill play it, probably more then it would seemed based on my review, a little hypocritical I know. Ok so what is going on, usually it;s the critics that are really harsh and the users that aren't.

Anyways, I think that they have done it again. Without a doubt this game is an all round improvement on the previous titles which we all thought couldn't get better. The single player takes off straight from MW2 and had me glued to my seat until I had finished it. The story line is like that of a movie that keep you interested to the point where you say to yourself: 'I'll just play this next little bit so I know what happens', which is what I want in a game. The multiplayer is yet again a giant leap. It combines all the stuff we loved from the previous titles and improves in every single way. From the simple things like being able to connect with your friends over facebook (simple but brilliant), to the new way in which the kill streaks work allowing you to select assault or support depending on your gaming style, to the new game modes available.

The game mode that stands out the most to me is without a doubt kill confirmed. I find myself thrown in to a game with complete strangers who I have never gamed with before but who all work as a team. Now to me that is what makes these games successful, the ability to make people work as a team. Of course all of the other game modes are still there so you can play your classic favorites but give the new ones a go, you might be surprised.

The kill streak system now makes the game a lot more accessible to players, meaning that not only the elite, 30 kills no deaths players, get to use all of the toys that undoubtedly increase there kill to death ratio even more. Now you can choose assault, where your kills reset when you die and the rewards are used for assaulting the enemy, or support, where your kills do not reset when you die and the rewards are used to support your team. My friends who are not as good as some of the players on COD find this great as they don't have their hard earned kills removed from them when they die.

Overall I think this is a great game and it baffles me as to why it has got such low reviews when you consider the amount of people who have bought the game already and the amount of people playing the game who keep saying that it is brilliant.

I think people who are expecting a brilliant single player will be more than pleased with MW3 but those expecting a long single player game will be a little let down but you have to take into consideration previous games, and I mean all previous games. I have played near enough every first person shooter imaginable and what you tend to get is a brilliant and long single player experience with a pretty shoddy multiplayer experience, or a rubbish and short single player experience with an amazing multiplayer experience. Now I think it's safe to say that MW3 has a pretty healthy balance of the two which is rare in first person shooter games.

For those who are not into your multiplayer gaming online and just buying this for the single player: you are missing out and quite frankly foolish.

Cheers to the development team that worked on this I think you have done a fantastic job.

After playing MP for two days i can truly say that this is an amazing addition to the COD series.
Spec ops is definitely more interesting this time around. Survival mode is brutal.
I haven't been n00b tubed once... which is pretty sick! haha

Now I feel locked into a simple run and gun game that stifles creativity and makes what looks (graphically) the same as the last 2 COD games feel tired and boring. It feels like whoever made this game took the original IW team's hard work and listened to the biggest whiners and crybaby players and turned what used to be a diverse game into a vanilla shooter with a few new gimmicks thrown in to try to satisfy us. I remember watching the Robert Bowling hype videos on XBL and listening to him talk about "listening to the community" and taking out the most annoying aspects out of the game. To this end they have but have allowed a whole other of contingent of annoying aspects to thrive. This game, like most things made by a commitee, in a community people pissing and moaning and yelling in the annonyimty of the internet has produced a substandard product. Expand

This game is the same recycled stuff of 2007....Battlefield 3 is hands down the better game online.
MW3 is that bad that Sledgehammer games have taken to twitter to ask people for fake positive reviews!! How can you give a positive review if the game isn't that great?

The game scores a 9 with Elite up and running. Until then I must go with a 7. I beta tested Elite. It was awesome. Now I can't even log in Expand

I was expecting this game to at least be an improvement on the others but I get nothing. The game is actually a downgrade in the graphics from MW2, it looks like COD 4, maybe that's because it is using the COD 4 engine, which I think was a bad move. Spec Ops was alright for the first hour or so then it just gets repetetive and boring. Whats the point of having Co-op if you can only have 1 friend play with you? I don't know what you were doing for two years but it sure as hell should have been alot better. How the hell can you downgrade a game? I never thought this was possible until today when I played MW3. Also, the campaign, it's just linear, predictable and unrealistic, with your average slo-mo part scattered here and there. This game is nothing special... And after your done taking our money on a downgraded game, you try to suck 65 dollars from us for a Call of Duty Elite subscription. Get real. Expand

Alright, let's look at this as a game on it's own, and not as part of a series. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's single player campaign plays like a movie, with little emphasis on exploration or tackling objectives in your own fashion. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's single player campaign plays like a movie, with little emphasis on exploration or tackling objectives in your own fashion. Behind all of the explosions and mayhem is a glorified set of corridors in which you do exactly as you're told, or else you cannot progress. Shoot the helicopter with this conveniently placed RPG, jump here, bomb these red squares here, follow this guy, and so forth. One part of the game attempted to make me feel something, but it didn't. Anyone else who played through the campaign knows what I'm talking about (it involves a van). The gunplay in the singleplayer seems to be a lot like whack a mole, with you trying to shoot the bad guys before they pop into cover, without much variation.

For a lot of people, the main meat of the game is in it's multiplayer. This mode contains your standard modes of play such as deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and so on. You get perks, which are like attributes that improve your abilities in certain areas, like sleight of hand which makes you reload faster. You also get certain "streaks" which are rewards for doing well. An example would be killing three people in a row and receiving a "UAV", and this UAV grants you the ability to check a minimap for the location of your foes. You can also get "streaks" for doing various teamwork related actions.

A third mode is the "Spec Ops" mode where you can attempt a few challenges either alone or with one friend. There is survival mode within this mode, where you fight wave after wave of enemies for as long as you can, while being able to buy upgrades and other weapons between and during waves to heighten your chances of survival. It's basically like the game Killing Floor with some more running. The other chunk of spec ops is a bunch of varied challenges, like "kill these targets within a certain time to receive stars" or "collect these samples". The stars you receive allow you to unlock more challenges, and playing the challenges on higher difficulties rewards you with even more stars.

Now, I can't give this game two ratings, but I'd like to. If this is your first time playing a game in the Call of Duty series, I'd give it an 8. If you have played games in this series before, 6, because it is very similar to the earlier ones.

Single player is very short (beat it in 5 hours 40mins on hardened) and totally throw away. There are too many turret/on-rails sequences and the stealth sections allow for very little improvisation. However no other game can rival its coop and multiplayer modes.

Maps aren't exactly amazing also. This is a classic money grab. Do not buy this game you WILL regret it.

Graphics - 3 (Compared to many games on the market this fairs poorly what would you expect with a lack of innovation)

Gameplay - 3 (Exactly the same as Modern warfare 2. While that gameplay was alright for a period it already feels old)

Sound - 1 ( Almost all the sound is the same from Modern warfare 2. Gun sounds, Ambient noise and the various explosions sound exactly the same. They weren't great to begin with.)

Overall - 2 - A game like this HAS to get slammed for this type of behavior. This is clearly a money grab by Activision. We all knew it would be a copy from Modern warfare 2 but i don't think anyone thought it would be even this bad. This game deserves a 2 for its complete lack of Innovation.

MW3 is exactly the same as MW2 and MW2 was trash. So you're paying for the exact same you already paid for. Oh and by the way MW2 was a rehash of COD4. If you enjoy spending sixty dollars on the exact same product every year then go ahead and continue buying COD games. If I watched someone play MW3 and they didn't tell me whether or not it was MW2 or MW3 I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I feel like activision is afraid of taking risks on making a good product so they just keep doing the same thing over and over again and that is the biggest risk of all. I would say save yourself the money, if you still own modern warfare 2 and weren't tired of playing it just pop that in and go to town.

    WOW IT'S LIKE I'M REALLY PLAYING MW2!!!!!!
This game just screams of a rehash, from easily recognisable assets from previous games, to the unchanged controls and game mechanics. The campaign is nothing but over-the-top set pieces connected by rooms of generic baddies, with virtually no variation, and the online isn't worth talking about.

Not quite a brand new game but does enough to make it feel fresh, sp is a bit of a let down but fun nonetheless, however the mp is once again as fun and addictive as before, most of the "brokenness" of mw 2 seems to have been rectified. Maps are a bit disappointing but we''l see what the dlc has to offer.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
