You can easily spray with any weapon and land most of the shots. This series is just losing its tactics and strategy behind it. It's gotten to the point where it feels like quake with modern assault rifles and weak player characters instead. The only draw to this game comes from some new weapons, maps, and a new killstreak system. Which in a way is kind of better but that feature alone doesn't change enough...let alone sell the game. The new maps are also uninspired and don't give you many options flanking. Trust me, after a couple hours the game just starts to feel like the same old stuff. You might as well go back to the first Modern Warfare from '07 if you want a better experience. Remember more does not mean better. Expand

Great game! If you don´t like it, go cry and play this crap called Battlefield 3! (: The singeplayer is short, but way more intense then Battlefield 3. The multiplayer isn't just an 'add-on' like a lot of battlefield fanboys say.. There are so much new things: New weapons (a lot!) , new locations & a lot of new killstreaks. And even a new multiplayer mode! So hell yeah, a 10!

This game is great! Very revamped for the multiplayer with 16 maps to start out with! the spec ops is also really fun I play it with my brother all the time and have a blast. The storyline is great if you know all of the previous modern warffare stories. Great game.

MW3 doesn't break the mold set by the other games in the series, but instead refines and perfects. But hey, if it aint broke don't try and fix it! The franchise has become so popular because of it's slick multiplayer and explosive campaign. I have no problem recommending this game. If you like online mulitplayer, this is more than worth the cost of the game!

    Story didn't make sense
Game play felt overused and dated
Engine is again out of date
    No new on-line mechanics
Where are the advances in technology as shown in Battlefield such as new lighting effects techniques!

The main changes are the new perks and new guns thats all.

It's rare that the third game in a series is the best but MW3 is, in my opinion the best of the CoD MW trilogy. Yes, it's easy to say it's more of the same - on the surface it is, it looks and feels comfortable just like the innovations in FIFA 12 or Forza 4 but look below the surface and you realise this is a game with depth. Yes, it's easy to say it's more of the same - on the surface it is, it looks and feels comfortable just like the innovations in FIFA 12 or Forza 4 but look below the surface and you realise this is a game with depth. Firstly the single player campaign is a cinematic roller coaster ride. The story is worthy of a good action thriller and the action draws you in. If you are a fan of the series I'm sure you will enjoy how the game ties up all the loose ends, as always there is clever use of flashbacks to add story detail. The campaign is one of the few I will replay, it really is that good. Spec Ops adds another dimension, survival mode is frantic and the challenges are well executed. Solo play means you can get to enjoy this mode even if your friends happen to be busy and you don't like the idea of teaming up with the randoms on xbox live. The use of the XP / levelling up system works again well here. Again similar to before but just that little bit better.

Multiplayer is of course where this game really excels. The real innovation here is what I call for the rest of us. If like me you don't dominate the leader boards and are often middle to low on each round scoreboard previous versions of MW could be frustrating. As a result of the previous MW series bias toward only the best player I was always more of a Battlefield fan as there were simply more ways to gain experience than having to be a deadeye marksman. Now with the support packages and kill streaks that carry through deaths there is a chance to level the score. There is also a much greater sense of progression - probably because the playing field has been levelled slightly by the support packages - both in rank terms but also with each weapon and various attachments. If you were one of those who just liked to dominate everyone else in the game you probably don't like it - for the rest of us it's a big improvement.

By sticking to the same success formula with a rip roaring single player story and by levelling the playing field slightly in online MW3 is the best of the series.

hmmm, a game by Activision, the company that fired the CEO's of Infinity Ward. Also the company that re-staffed Infinity Ward to make it's next installment of the Call of Duty franchise, which is what it is for Activision, a way to make money. Don't waste your money on this remake game, go spend it on a game made by a real company that deserves your support.

When you have been gaming for a few decenia like I have this is a very troubling development to observe and I hope it is one that will end soon, however I am fearful the opposite might actually be true and this is just the beginning of an actual movement of marketeers influencing kids into thinking they have but one choice when it comes to a certain type of game. Every big release seems to be positioned opposite a different game of the same genre and even before they have been released a battle of words ensues on the internet as to whose game is better, more advanced or prettier and of course the ever present used-so-often-it-lost-all-its-meaning "fanboy" crops up in every other sentence. What you guys need to realize is that you are not fighting your own battle, you are actively involved in the marketing of a product and are willfully doing the job someone normally gets paid to do. You are not living in world where you need to chose between drinks, books, games, etc. You do not live in an either/or world. You can drink Coke AND Pepsi, you can wear Levis AND Dockers, you can eat Big Macs AND Whoppers, you can read Harry Potter AND War and Peace, watch The Shield AND The Wire, you can play Dark Souls AND Skyrim, CoD AND BF, etc. It is baffling to read 'reviews' on this site and at the same time be 100% certain the persons who wrote them did not play the game they're reviewing for 1 second but are actively repeating the same lines that have been said over and over again for hundreds of such 'reviews' in a row. The actual lines put into their mouths by the "other company" trying to outshine their competitors. I want metacritic to reflect the opinion of people playing a game and providing me with insight into their experience again, just as it used to be. What I do not want is to read hundreds of nerd-rage fuelled marketing stooges supporting one developer or another not being aware that their fueling of the fire is actualy equivelant to putting money in their pockets. Stop it, now! Expand

I am a massive modern warfare fan and have been looking forward to MW3 since black ops first arrived, however, I am sorely disappointed to say the least, MW3 avatar is slow, and game play seems to be even slower than MW2, I dont believe this is a worth while release and am taking this straight back to gamestation, not only this but I played for 2 hours under double XP reaching level 26 when I logged back on later I was for some unknown reason level 8 ?? I dont think any of the 16 maps are particularly big infinity ward have managed to make them all feel like you are playing a map consistently the size of nuke town (just for reference) I will not be giving this another try, however, I will try the new treyarch title in November next year which I believe is going to be a black ops sequel. Once again I cannot stress how diappointing MW3 is and honestly believe it should be taken off the shelves and given some serious work as MW3 feels like a step backwards towards MW2 rather than a better experience than black ops. One the other hand I have never been a fan of battlefield either but I think there is going to be a big shift in sales towards the Modern warfare rivals come the next installment. I would say well done to infinity ward but you are leaving everyone I know devastated after waiting for so long. Expand

The game is just a copy & paste from MW2. They have just added a few weapons and a predictable story to release another Call of Duty and hoard in the money from all the under 14's out there who are willing buy anything will 'Call of Duty' on it. Every level is well thought out and varied requiring you to keep on your toes. Enemies react and flank your position meaning you can never have your back turned for any period of time which makes healing a nerve racking experience if you haven't gotten a check point.

The difficulty of the game on veteran was a little disappointing considering the shortness of the campaign. I was able to beat the game in roughly 6-8 hours and had I played through on easy you'd be looking at a 4-5 hour game. Modern Warfare 3 is the one to beat. Next years Call of Duty better aim high.

The maps, oh the maps..., are the exact same thing I've seen in MW for a while now. Each one is just laid out different and with different textures. Actually trying to use knowledge of the map to your advantage fails horribly because by the time you try to circle around any enemy they are either gone or already killed by the fast paced nature of things.

The list of game modes available, while impressive, still lack ways to differentiate from each one, mostly due to the lack of map uniqueness.

The only thing that saves it for me is the single player campaign.

simply boring. I would rather go to sleep at the steering wheel then to play another 5 minutes of this game, constant bugs and glitches, no innovative gameplay, at all, just a different way of accessing your killstreaks and perks and weapons, but overall the game feels cliched, and exactly like MW2 except more like an expansion pack. So it has to be obvious, the morons are being paid to give this game a good review so that Activision can get and 15 million copies sold. Its starting to become about money and not quality when it comes to Activision, Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

Who ever buys this game and like it, is a very generic human being and has to be put down at once. Way to sad to see peoples lifes rot away as they play MW3

BF3 really makes this garbage stand out even more. I have had it with these big companies squeezing the last drop of blood from us consumers by selling and hyping junk like this. truly disappointed.

You have the same infinitely spawning enemies that try to kill you before you and your team reaches the objective which just leads to a somewhat dull story telling experience. But in the end 98% of people don't buy the game for the story they buy it for the countless hours of multilayer enjoyment that we all come to love with modern games. Sadly I just don't feel they delivered what we all were expecting when this game was being hyped up. Its the same graphics same sound and unfortunately the same feel as the past two games just with a new name and a brand new game price tag slapped on a box. But it is a structurally solid game and I haven't encountered may bugs that cant be attributed to release day bugs but I just cant get past it having the EXACT same feel as the past two games had. This game is not very good at all. I played Call of Duty: World at War, and it is basically the exact same gameplay as that with little to no innovation...why does Activision have to keep publishing these terrible games, take A FEW YEARS to develop something good? The controls are faster, smoother and tighter than they've ever been before. New guns, new perks, new point streaks and new maps will keep me hooked for months. Unrealistic physics, players are able to stand over 1 inch objects, killstreaks are excessive, overall experience feels way too arcadey. At the end of the day, if the game favors an unfair advantage just by having the fastest connection, the quality of the game suffers. I can deal with the asthetics and sounds, but the overall immersion of the game promotes lone wolf gameplay. Even on the team based objectives. Sometimes its not good to change what's not broke, but in this case, this is the same game made in 2007, only with different maps, a few boring new game modes. I feel that because the damage is so beefed up that the game now doesn't rely on tactics and strategy as it is too strongly now based on reaction time and latency, this issue punishes those of us that don't have super low pings. Tied to the first issue, because the game is so fast my friends who havn't played as much CoD and don't react completely on instinct (there isn't any time to consciously think about your actions) do not enjoy playing the game (so much for 'anyone can pick up and play") which makes it more difficult for me to enjoy. Another issue is team play. IW and SH keep coming up with ways to reward the individual for objective play under the guise that they are promoting "team play". If you want tips on how to promote team play you need only look at BF3. Because the game is so fast now there is no reason to call out to a friend about enemy locations because by the time they are able to react the same enemy has cleared out the room before you could finish the sentence. As far as map design an sniping is concerned... There are very few places you can legitimately snipe. The maps are so tiny that it only lends itself to quick scoping, by and large alienating people who want to kick back, take it a little slower and snipe from range. like normal snipers.

In my honest opinion. the game needs to be slowed down by reducing damage in general to be somewhere between black ops and MW2.

There is a reason the user score is so low IW/SH. These are only some of my concerns from my experience. I just hope they are listening.

Whatever happened to innovation in games? Sure, MW3 introduced some new game modes and leveling system, but enough to be allowed to release a new game every year? Not at all. MW3 is nothing but a rehashed version its predecessors and there should be no reason that they make us buy a new title every year when they're not offering us anything new.

It looks, feels and plays almost exactly like MW3. And not in 'MW3 reminds me of MW2' but in a 'What exactly is the difference between these two games?' way. Save yourself 60 bucks and just keep playing Black Ops.

The stages are larger and more detailed than they ever have been in a Call of Duty game and the multiplayer experience is far more polished and balanced than MW2's online offerings. This is a game worth picking up.

The single player campaign is the first stop I make for every Modern Warfare game. The game is a visual and aural delight; at times I found myself taking a break from the battle around me just to appreciate the finer details the developers worked in. The sound design has improved immensely since the last installment, too. Guns pop with satisfying force, the voice actors put on a convincing show, and explosions distort sound more realistically than ever.

However, I will admit that this is not the strongest single player experience in the Modern Warfare franchise. It is everything I expected it to be, but nothing more. Joining the cast are several forgettable new characters, which is a shame considering the legacy of memorable (and occasionally infamous) characters in the previous MW games. Rarely did I find myself invested in the story, which suffers from pacing issues and fatigued plot devices. I did find some parts of the game pleasantly tense, but the campaign is predictable and shallow otherwise. MW3 definitely feels like the third in a trilogy in this regard, rather than a narrative that can stand on its own two feet.

Thankfully MW3 finds its footing elsewhere. Spec Ops has been rethought and restructured and it plays great. The addition of online play is a welcome feature and the loose tie-ins with the campaign mean that even those playing solo have something to enjoy.

Of course, the real meat and potatoes of any CoD game is its multiplayer offering. MW3's multiplayer is the most polished and feature-packed entry to date, outclassing last year's Black Ops in nearly every way imaginable. The developers worked to make the online mode a more balanced game and their effort paid off. Weapons are better adjusted, maps seem more focused, and the new strike packages provide players a whole slew of new battle tactics. Gone are the days when campers owned the game, which is refreshing considering this has been an issue for almost half a decade now. New game modes and a larger variety of weapons ensure that the newest installation in the CoD franchise feels fresh.

Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer have crafted the best CoD package yet. Pick this game up and give it a go. You might be surprised at not only the volume of the content, but its depth as well.

And why did they quite using vehicles in the multiplayer after Call of Duty 2. I don't have any intentions of buying the game, I just rented it for a week. Next week I will start playing BF3, already bought it. Here's a thought, bigger maps, vehicles and use some maps that are in the campaign... awesome set pieces. I know guys who only buy for the multiplayer. Come on MW.... get with it. Too, bad really the campaign is awesome. Expand

Kill Confirmed and Team Defender are a nice new twist to the usual CoD multiplayer. Don't believe the trolling 'mature' BF3 fanboys. This is a great COD game. Single player is as good, maybe even better, than COD4. The multiplayer is a breath of fresh air, a totally different feel than previous games in the series. My only gripe is that there aren't any standout maps. They are good but nothing stands out as a classic.

Though lacking in the innovation department, Modern Warfare 3 excels in just about everything you'd expect it to: action-packed high octane single player? Check. Incredibly deep multiplayer? Check. An even better co-op mode to play with a friend online or off? Check and check. Whether you like it alone, with a bud or with a group of strangers, MW3 has a mode for you.

Unfortunately, though, this game is kind of like climbing the same summit with a helicopter. The developers did not challenge themselves. Innovation is what attracted everyone to call of duty only a few years ago. Activision is fortunate to have such a massive, casual fanbase that will buy their games no matter the quality of the product. They need to use this to their advantage! Take some risks! The people that blindly buy a company's every installment aren't the people writing lackluster reviews for the product. The developers need to realize that it is okay to take a year off to recalculate and mess around with the unknown once again. Call of Duty does not need to continue as the Madden of shooter games. I have trouble reviewing the game on a strictly standalone basis because of the painful familiarity. The positive aspects of the game were emphasized in my glorifying review of MW2. This time around I just have more complaints. 6/10 Expand

I love it and at the same time I'm not too fond of it. Sure the single player story isn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it and how it ended the story arc. I was a little bit disappointed on the multiplayer aspect of the game. I still can't believe that after so many years IW refuses to use dedicated servers for consoles and relies on the asinie P2P hosting. I am so sick of the whole I shot first but when I watch the kill cam, no rounds came out of my weapon and the other person got the kill because they have the faster connection. Also, the maps seem very claustrophobic compared to the other Modern Warfare games. Like Black Ops, there aren't many sniper friendly maps. AND QUICKSCOPING! Why has that been brought back? It has to be the most annoying feature I have ever seen. It does not make you a badass player. It just makes you an annoying prick who relies on the aim assist because you suck at aiming down the sights. I really hope IW monitors this game and does not let hacking overrun it like COD4 and MW2. I really hope the new maps coming out are less claustrophobic and more along the vein of COD4 and MW2. I'm sorry but this will be the last Call of Duty game I purchase and if Infinity Ward doesn't step up their game, then this will probably be the last Call of Duty game for a lot of people. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD INFINITY WARD! GO BACK AND FIX CALL OF DUTY 4'S MULTIPLAYER! FOR ONCE I WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK TO THAT GAME AND ENJOY A ROUND OF TEAM DEATH MATCH WITHOUT BEING KILLED BY SOME DOUCHEBAG WHO IS GOING UNDERNEATH THE MAP OR USING WALLHACKS! Expand

I am a bit irritated by all the negative reviews by users on here. Just like everyone else I felt like COD as a franchise was getting old and needed a break, or at least a shot in the arm. While MW3 isn't revolutionary, it is definitely one of the strongest outings yet. The game definitely feels like MW2, yet it is a lot more balanced on the online front and manages to stay fun. Even when you aren't getting kills you can have more fun than you did in Black Ops or MW2 because you can actually support your team and get rewarded for it. The game definitely isn't n00b friendly, but it manages to reward you for everything you do. I think that future Call of Duty games need to follow a similar path and MW3 is a great start. The new survival mode is great and I feel it fills a gap for those who want to play COD, but are easily frustrated by the multiplayer. BF3 is by far the superior game, but MW3 isn't a disappointment by any means. The haters can talk s*** all they want, but the truth is that 90% of them went out and bought this game on day 1 and are probably going to buy the map packs and the next COD that comes out. If you want Call of Duty to fail don't muddy up their scores on Metacritic, STOP BUYING THE GAMES. I on the other hand will continue to enjoy MW3 for the next few months instead of griping about the graphics. Expand

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
