It has certainly lived up to all the hype, with decent graphics, amazing multiplayer, definitely the best in the series, and a good campaign, MW3 is an amazing game!

Keyword, INNOVATION! CALL OF DUTY HAS LOST ALL CONCEPTS OF INNOVATION!!! Every year its the same game just from a different developer. Treyarch royally s****ed up zombies so they kinda went out the window, seeing as though they always make steps backwards in Call of Duty games, good ideas on paper, but poor game play overall, and IF, I'm sorry but there are so many things that just exploded in this game that screamed to me. One explosives are no longer explosives! I'd feel better throwing a pillow than a grenade, one because they tend to bounce off of everything and two, The guy literally has to sit on it for it to kill him! Next thing is mobility, I like how they varied it up with the guns, but honestly? You run like a moron at maybe a half a foot per second if you use anything bigger than an assault rifle, which screams, "Shoot this idiot!!!" Campaign really lacked any strong moments that drew you in or any super BA ones, all of it was predictable and what about these fancy new game modes? In my eyes kill confirmed is dreadful unless its in team tac, you say it encourages teamwork, I say it encourages camping since kids just sit in the center of the map and camp dog tags! The game itself is structurally sound, but there is no way it should be hailed like this, I agree with the others this isn't MW3, this is MW2.5. I will still play it, but not as much as BF or Halo or Skyrim which brings me to another thing. I paid 50$ for CoD Elite and signed up the first day, so far the servers are still down, I don't have the Founder status yet and I don't know if I ever will get it and who knows what this means for the DLC schedule. Poor poor poor poor poor POOR planning on activisions part! Expand

I bought MW3, but this will be the last time I purchase a CoD game until the make some significant strides in improving the game engine and the gameplay itself.

For those of you complaining that all of the bad reviews are by Battlefield fanboys, I'd like to point out that those of us who have been playing CoD since the beginning are really used to a more Battlefield type game. For example, CoD: United Offensive was almost identical to the type of gameplay you find in Battlefield. Even as recently as Word at War, BF and CoD were very similar, especially when playing Conquest/Domination or Rush/Search and Destroy/Demolition. The difference here is that DICE has continued to upgrade their engine and refine gameplay in a much more progressive manner than IW has done with CoD. Until Activision stops churning out a yearly rehashed sequel, I'm done with CoD.

Now, players can shoot right through riot shields. This shows a great unbalance between primary weapons. As if that wasn't horrible enough the overall surface area of the riot shield is to be laughed at. It is high enough, but the arc is not long enough, but to barely cover the front of your player. ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, every person in the world feels the need to throw every single kind of tactical/lethal grenade at riot shielders, and blast shield doesn't work..... I had countless lives where I was using blast shield bro and would be stunned, and killed by grenades. This frustrates me very much and I was very glad that I rented the game and did not buy this filthy trash. RIOT SHIELDING TO THE END! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't like smearing a game like this. But honestly, early previews suggested nothing exciting about this game, and the biggest aspect of its appeal to me was its story; and while I have enjoyed my time with it playing with my friends, and I have a modicum of fun with it, I certainly agree that there is nothing here which hasn't been done before, specifically in Modern Warfare 2. This game needs to be the last time Activision rests on its laurels, lest next year be the Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock/ Tony Hawk Ride of this series. People say its the Madden of shooters, and this years is that in spades. While I haven't finished Campaign yet, so far its been a largely predictable bit of set pieces, retreading the same old gameplay "variety" we've had since Modern Warfare is a bit trite. I started the story on veteran and have had little difficulty at all moving through it. The story seems ridiculous the more I think of it -- the notion that all of the world would go to war over one American body found at a terrorist attack? We couldn't disavow this guy? All the footage of the four OTHER guys, one of which, at least, Russian? (Don't get me wrong, I felt that sequence in the airport was very powerful, and a great device for the story, and the consequences were handled well enough too. I felt something seeing suburbs burning as Ramirez.) But I digress. So I will say lastly for the story so far is that the sequence which has been most controversial so far, was not at all necessary, and is rendered less effective even for how out of place it is, as there are no other children in the story, or any where. So I feel this fell flat, to be frank, like they only included it to A) Try and cram drama forcibly down our throat, or B) Tried to cram controversy down our throat. This game plays solidly, and has plenty of bro worthy moments, but no more or less than any other Call of duty ever has in its online play. THis is fine. And the fact that millions have bought it, thats fine too. But it is sad, in a way. As you see I feel this game was mostly phoned in, and if you feel like Professional reviewers were paid off , I feel similarly. The spec ops mode is unorginal, but I had fun with MW2s, and I enjoy survival, as well. I will continue to play Multiplayer, just to hang and compete with friends. But I will not pay another dime for dlc, I will not get Elite. The changes I can note are only two fold: Grenade launchers don't kill in one shot, and strike packages. This was overhyped. Halo 2, was hyped about right, maybe a lil bit over. But not as much. Expand

It is fairly obvious that a 360 degree riot shield would offer much more protection in the fray of the battlefield. I was looking forward to going to war with a riot shield, but now I am disheartened by the disadvantage they have. I am really disappointed in Infinity Ward's apathy towards the quality of this game, and equally disappointed in Activision's decision to publish such a poorly balanced game. The new games modes provide a little something for everyone and offer a wide variety of choices to takedown the enemy team. Not to mention the new survival mode offers a fresh take on the ever popular "horde mode" giving players hundreds of hours of playtime which never goes stale. With Battlefield 3, Dice was more focused on the competition as opposed to making an actually solid game that met its enormous expectations. I've enjoyed Call of Duty since I first played COD2 on the 360 all those years ago. For me personally, after COD4, the series has gone downhill for me - a lack of new innovative features and tiring gameplay meant I had very little expectations for MW3.

The game itself is a mixed bag - if you're a massive COD fan, you've already made your mind up or already have this game. If you're not a COD fan, this won't change your mind about it. MW3 does very little different when compared to previous versions (a couple of new multiplayer modes and "revamped" killstreaks aren't enough) but I suppose it doesn't need to based on the popularity of the series, especially with the casual gaming crowd. However, the single player campaign is definitely one of the strongest in recent years, probably since the original MW. It has plenty going on, massive set pieces and a solid enough story with a couple of twists. There's very little downtime in the campaign, giving it a very exhilarating feel. It's as polished as ever and has the production values of a big summer blockbuster. For those who care, it easily trumps BF3's campaign.

Multiplayer was the big disappointment for me, and the reason I'm trading it in. There's nothing new introduced into multiplayer, aside from previously mentioned killstreaks and modes. And for me personally, I find the maps to be quite poor, no real memorable ones that stick in the mind. If you love COD multiplayer, then there's no doubt this is more of the same goodness. If you're not, or if you're tiring of it (as I am) then it isn't going to help you change your mind regarding it.

Overall, it's a solid game but fails to add anything new to it, which is a major downside. Plenty of user reviews have slated it for this, giving it 0 out of 10 etc, which to be honest I think is harsh. It's not the masterpiece that so many publications have described it as but at the same time, it's definitely not the abomination that so many users believe it to be.

The maps are the bane of MW3. I enjoy the other minor changes to online gameplay, but the maps are what makes MW3 an extreme disappointment. I cannot comprehend how the devs didn't notice that EVERY single map is practically the same: small, confined, and noob friendly. Why bother getting an AC130 when you can hide from it almost anywhere in any map. There are no long distance shooting skills needed, SMGs (UMP) are favored in any situation. There is no flow to the maps, just chaos. You constantly get shot in the back, there is no feeling of a standoff like in previous COD games. I literally could go on forever with how bad these maps are. It's obvious the map makers of IW were the ones that left, because these maps are atrocious, and kill any sense of fun or accomplishment online.

For all those complaining the multiplayer is the same as MW2 but with new maps what did you expect? The Xbox 360's hardware can't get any better, the CoD games are popular and keep breaking records every time they are released so they must be doing something right, and you'd be pretty annoyed if they changed everything this time round - for example if FIFA 2012 was released as a rugby game you'd be outraged!

Still the best first person shooter multiplayer on the market. Still one of the worst campaign modes of any game. If you liked the other games in the Call of Duty series, you'll like MW3. In my opinion the maps are getting a bit repetitive. It feels like they're taking bits and pieces from older maps and combining them. It's fun, but it's not as innovative as the previous chapters.

Now that another C.O.D has said to becoming out next year (surprise) I hope whom ever makes it leaves the comfort of the C.O.D bubble and changes the series completely. Take a step outside of the box and change the formula, use a new graphics engine, and let's not make it about Russians. Seeing as Nazis have been over killed in the games, it seems the whole terrorists working with Russians or visa versa will get old as well if it already hasn't. And yes that goes for Battlefield. I've heard that the game feels like a $60 dollar add-on and that's what it does feel like. Did I pay for the name or the game? Probably the name. If anyone from Activision reads this, take some pointers from EA and DICE, and expand and change and try new things with your game. So far your a one trick pony and after awhile your oohs and ahhhs will become boos and blahs. I'd be bad if you ran the C.O.D franchise in the ground like you did Guitar Hero. And how did you manage to do that? By releasing more than one every year and sometimes more than one a year. I only actually could get any kills if I myself was caffed out of my gourd on speed or Extreme Mountain Dew...the reflexes were too fast, and the tolerance for different playstyles (I like to be a medic and trap killer, and suck at twitch-shooting and streaking...) I just hated that game. I actually literally gave it to a poor youth a few months ago and never missed it. This Mw3 takes all those qualities you hated about Mw2...and makes them not only more extreme, but finally, in the final analysis, uninteresting and boring. Black Ops was alot more fun to me...while it did not revel in them, it at least tolerated different styles, and I could rank up. That said, it really only kept my attention to the first map pack or so, and then got swiftly boring. There's none of that here, so if you were bored by Black Ops after a few months, here you'll probably be bored in a few HOURS.

I hear they changed the new MW3 so that you can play different style of play and still get points (ala the BF series, where you can be the high score but not necessary have the most kills, etc.) and I'm excited about that...I wish that were true. It's the same game, different day. And there you have a microcosm of the Call of Duty community. I find the game still fun, but only after this community mitigates after a few weeks of release...if then. And let me say right here, as someone who has played ALL of this series, even back to the pc only Call of Duty...this formula has gotten stale to me. It looks to me like they completely refined the formula from the last MW games, and kept the base of fans, and it's troubling that apparently they cut and pasted wholesale sections of graphics from the other games, but that said, I'm sure they've perfectly brewed up a superior product..to their last game. Is it superior to any other games on the market? No, it's weaker and more stale.

The campaign (even though a bit short) was very good, it follows on perfectly from previous stories and allows the player to get very involved with the plot itself. The only criticism I would have is the length as it only takes an average of 5 hours to complete, at least another 3 hours would of been welcomed or DLC for further missions. The online play again is very good, sticking to the same format the maps are fairly small but the introduction of the new strike packages are welcomed as if you are not very good you can still rack up kills and proceed to get kill streaks.

The only criticisms I have as stated before was the length fo the campaign, other then that this is a brilliant game and you get what you expect from the Call of Duty series.

Now to the bad side, the campain ending is really predictable and unfinished, they didnt even talk about where did nikolai or the others goes or what happens afterwards. Everything in the campain feels the same as MW and MW2, fighting russians, fighting terriost, terriost attacks/bombs, its just like they are reusing the same killing russians and chasing makarov idea over and over again which leads to an really expected storyline, it feels unfinished considering its the last of the triology, spec ops is really, and when i say really, i mean REALLY boring when you play alone even with a stranger, your partner runs everywhere leading to fails and frustration really messes up the whole spec ops experience. The multiplayer does have a great variety of customization but it lacks a great variety of new, refreshing gameplay experience, anyone who play any COD have already player MW3, still the run and gun experience, still alot of campers, alot of people frequenly quiting games in the middle of a match, and alot more. The maps are really the same maps from MW2 but repositioned and remodelled, you will find all the maps really similar to the maps in MW2. MW3 still have the one-sided feeling for every match, the team that wins one game, most of the time will keep winning untill someone left or someone joined. What really brings MW3 down to a 4 and not a 5 or 6 is that when i search for a game such as TDM, i see more than 100 thousand player that specific gametype and it can tell me no game are avaliable, then i try kill comfirmed, domination, and other gametypes, none, i can search no games at all, not even one, that is really dissapointing. I have played the game (even bought the extortionate hardened edition - for elite access, but I guess that's for another gripe later if they ever get the service up and running) and where it is a very good and compelling campaign it helps to finish the story - isn't that what we've een waiting for?

I was looking forward to the Spec Ops side of the game - my favourite part if I'm honest and it hasn't let me down, it's challenging in places but not too much that I wanna throw the controller at the screen.

The biggest let down is (wait for the screams of derision) - multiplayer! Go ahead, scoff!!!

The reason I say it's a let down is that the illustrious makers have (again in my opinion) spent more time on the scenery rather than actual gameplay - too much on scenery, maybe that wouldn't be a problem if I could walk over a stone on the ground without being able to move (other than moving left or right to walk around it!).

Let's also just take a moment to mention weapons - now I'm no expert (only in my own head) but as far as I am aware a shotgun (no matter what kind) doesn't need nor can or should it be fitted with a silencer not to mention the fact that it is not a SNIPER RIFLE and therefore CANNOT kill from great distance with one shot - hell, in accordance with COD a .50 calibre sniper rifle needs at least 3-5 shots to put a man down!

Hey, it's not just COD that falters with the weapons but that's just the way I feel after all the hype and the wait for such a poor show of what should have been a fantastic game. Thanks if you have waited until the end to berate my opinion - guess I'm off to play some BF3.

The worst, they have tossed out. The campaign is no shorter than the BF3 campaign. and i found it more difficult. I sold BF3 the day after getting MW3. It is fun (bf3) and has great graphics, and very realistic. But the realism downplays the replay ability. It gets boring. CoD MW3 is and improvement. And it was two years ago when IW and Activision released a CoD title. Black Ops had NOTHING to do with these two development teams. I give it a nine, because i have not experienced the "noob tube" effect. (the one annoying feature which drives a player crazy) that ruined MW2 for me. and the game is an improvement from previous titles. It loses the 10 score because they should work on dedicated servers. only flaw in my eyes. I wasnt looking for an entirely new game. i was looking for MW3, the last in the trilogy of MW. Innovative, no. But it is the best CoD title to date. Expand

This game is great. Honestly, every part of it is brilliant.

Let's start with the single player. It's short, yeah. Everyone has come to expect that from the Call of Duty franchise. The campaign is filled with Michael Bay style set pieces, and cinematic moments that will be stuck in your mind for years to come - much like previous moments in Call of Duty 4, and Modern Warfare 2. The campaign delivers a sweet ending to the Modern Warfare trilogy, complete with epic moments, and emotional moments. The game really leaves me wondering, though - What is next for Infinity Ward?

Once you've completed the campaign, you've got Spec Ops to look forward to. One mode is similar to its MW2 predecessor - going through moments from the campaign with different objectives, completing them by yourself or with a friend, either on Xbox Live or in split screen. And now, you can even search for people to join you if you're lacking in the friends department. However, Spec Ops is more than this now. There's the newly introduced Spec Ops Survival mode, that puts you and a partner against waves and waves of enemies, ranging from your run of the mill soldier, to dogs with C4 strapped to them. This mode also comes with the ability to rank up, unlock new weapons and killstreaks, such as calling in a Delta squad to assist you in taking out Juggernauts. Overall, this mode is a masterpiece from Infinity Ward.

Multiplayer, the piece of the game that the majority of players only care about. The internet has been littered with haters screaming, "It's the same game!" Well let me tell you something - It's not. This game plays very differently to MW2. Sure, it's the same style as all of the previous Call of Duty's, but that's because it's a sequel. Infinity Ward would be stupid to go out and completely redesign Call of Duty, when they've got a formula that is almost perfect, and the game increases in sales every year. Packed with new features, weapons, equipment, and maps, this game is definitely huge.

Modern Warfare 3 is definitely the most balanced Call of Duty to date. As well as that, it is also the most fun, the most action packed, and brings the most content to the table.

In conclusion, this game is so packed with content that it will take a long time until it's forgotten about. Is it revolutionary? No. Does it need to be? No. The Call of Duty series shows no signs of dying, and you're in denial if you think it is.

Enjoying the game! Don't believe the negative user scores. Not a perfect 10 all games have faults. If you truly loved previous COD games you will not be disappointed. The story is a thrill ride, multiplayer is action packed, Spec Ops is almost a standalone game in itself. Graphics not the greatest but one of the best. Worth your money!

I gave this Game a 0 out of 10 for one major reason and that is that on some maps they copied and pasted entire buildings from previous modernwarfares (not even updated the textures or graphics on them) that makes parts of this game at least 5 years old. In my opinion directly copying material in such and obvious way makes this game little more than a cheat. and money spinner.

Repacking the same game for the third time in a row. The SP is anemic, MP identical and the DLC gouging of customers remains the same. MW3 should have been sold as 15$ expansion to MW2. There is simply no excuse for the consistent lack of creativity and shady business practices revolving around this series.

I only played this game for 2 days, but I can agree fully with some people here. MW3 would be more of an add-on than a full game. There are no innovations in terms of gameplay, the layout resembles Black Ops and one cannot play well the game in a calm and tactical way. Still very fast and arcade, good to spend some time, but unworthy of more than 7 points.

The menus are unnecessarily cumbersome. I find setting up my custom classes gets pretty annoying. I'm not sure why these changes were made. Still, I could get used to this if I were to keep the game long enough, which I probably will not.

The multi-player issue can be described in three words: Poorly Designed Maps.

Every map is basically the same. Regardless of size, the surroundings force tight game play. Each battle takes on the same result. Whether its blown up cars, walls, hills, ruins, etc., players are forced through choke points. Very few maps offer any areas of visibility. This leads to games that feel like walking through an amusement park haunted house, around each bend another player jumps out on you. This gets old pretty quickly. Camping in corners and shadows, or in windows or darkened doors, is the norm. Overall, this just has the feel of being a cheap COD knock off rather than a true COD game. I played MW2 until Black Ops came out, and played that until this was released. Looks like I will have to find another game to fill my usual gaming time as this just isn't cutting it.

Oh man...modern warfare 2 does not offer this. It only gives you kill rushes. Thats it. And im sure mw3 does the same. I...cannot accept this over the massive stimulation I get from battlefield 3. I get less kills, but The overall experience is better.

The maps are all very similar in feel, closed close combat maps with few open spaces and half the size of some of the MW2 maps, when playing with 12 to a team it is incredibly cluttered and teamwork is impossible. Larger maps with an emphasis on teamwork would have been an innovation I could have lived with but it's the same old running and gunning and the victories go to those with machine pistols and sprint. The much touted new weapons etc don't make that much a difference really because the maps are so small you only really need an auto and a quick trigger finger.
Comparing it to BF3 is a waste of time as they really are totally different games, comparing it to it's predecessor MW2 or Black Ops more appropriate and sadly MW3 doesn't stack, MW2 is still a superb game and I regret trading in my copy of Black Ops for MW3.

First let me say that COD has always suffered from not using dedicated servers. Someone gets picked as host who has the best connection and it's a guarantee that person and who ever connects well to that host will see you a good 1/2 sec before you see them, which for this game is instant death. BF3 uses dedicated servers and it shows. But here is the main problem with MW3, there are NO medium to long range maps...90% of the maps are small close quarter street and alley type layouts that have no areas to hold down or go after and really no buildings to go in. They all play the same, just super fast paced with the same perks and guns from before. Forget maps like Wasteland, Terminal, Estate, Derail, Afghan, Carnival, Trailer Park, Overgrown....maps with personality letting you go in planes/airports, C130s, trailer parks, train yards, open areas with long lines of sight, etc. Most maps are single level with a few stairs for multilevel but the line of sight is terrible. Forget sniping. It's useless. EVERY MAP IS LIKE FAVELA IN THE LAYOUT EXCEPT YOU CANNOT GO IN 99% OF THE BUILDINGS. This is a sad rehash of MW2 with HORRENDOUS map design. So for a game that is based off a host connection, all these stupid little street/alley maps will literally make you so mad because someone will kill you before you even have a chance to react. Oh so they added something new in weapon proficieny eh? What a load of junk, just a sneaky way to give you a 4th perk (as if 3 wasnt chaotic enough) except it applies specifically to your gun. 2 weapon attachments? Sounds like Bling perk. Increased bullet penetration? Sounds like Deep Impact. Focus? Who the heck will ever use that since you die immediately. This game is pure trash. Bobby Kotick needs to know what if feels like to be fed the same thing over and over. I wish i could feed him eggs for breakfast one day, then eggs over easy the next day. Then eggs benedict the next day. Then eggs sunny side up the next day. Then repeat that same process adding a little salt and pepper. Honestly I hate to make the comparison, but BF3 is a MUCH better game. It has its flaws too but it's so much more realistic and fun to play and is at least something different. Maybe if BF3 was more fun, some of you would be playing it instead of coming here to hate on MW3.... Expand

There is nothing suspicious about low review scores, MW3 is garbage! The only reason i gave it a 3 is because i get to shoot my friends in their face online. Otherwise, it would be a 0 !! They got rid of personalized emblems for the same old tired mw2 emblems and titles! Lame! They beefed up the guns and made them louder and faster, which is great but i have to shoot someone three timesThere is nothing suspicious about low review scores, MW3 is garbage! They got rid of personalized emblems for the same old tired mw2 emblems and titles! Lame! They beefed up the guns and made them louder and faster, which is great but i have to shoot someone three times in the face to get a kill, and at distance at least 5 times. The maps are terrible, complain all you want about WAW and BO but treyarch had great maps. Scenery is blurry, hectic and the elevations are ridiculous, you cant climb except stairs! Kill streaks have been changed to allow objective focused players some benefits (thank you)! Problem is now every 10 seconds theres another chopper or reaper or stealth bomber. Activision has let this game drown in its past glory, like that idiot guy you see around town driving the same car since 1983, because back then it was the coolest car on the street. Unfortunately you cant tell them that because their blind to the truth. This game is worn down, out of date and in need of an innovative over haul. I recommend do not buy this game at a store! There will be a million on ebay by the months end.! Expand

Wow... just finished the single player... Everything was; Wave->kill, Wave2-kill, run up 5 steps, Wave3-kill, Wave 4-kill, cut scene.

Battlefield 3 has a better camp IMO, not good enough, but better.

MW2 Single player is better than this by far, and also better than BF3.

Bad game MW3, only thing improved is the methods to induce addiction.

New box art, same sad game. MW2 was bad enough then they repackaged it and called it "MW3". Very disappointing, they should offer refunds. They spent more time on marketing and coming up with stupid themed accessories than they did coming with something new for the actual game. They recycled entire buildings!

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
