I'm very disappointed. This is the same game, again. No better graphics, no better gameplay, no better multiplayer from MW2. No multiplayer across multiplatforms.

Sure there is some awe inspiring visuals in this game but the whole process from start to finish is completely scripted where even though your in the game you never feel like your doing anything, kinda like sitting in the passenger seat of your car while someone else drives it. This game is like some major deja vu mind **** to any one that's already played mw1/mw2. Mission by mission is just a replay of the original mw and although it was great then with a new game you expect something new or it quickly becomes tedious as is the case with mw3. In short i feel the developers of this game took the original layout of the game made a few slight changes and then relied on mw reputation to sell this game rather then risking doing anything innovate or ground breaking. I wont get started on the multi-player or the elite superscription as that is a bigger let down then the campaign I just really, really hope they pull something out of the bag for mw4 or just don't bother at all. Shocking game!
A simple MW2 ripoff, pathetic attempt at an FPS which hasn't been innovated on since CoD2!
Absolutely nothing new here, I really do hope this is the LAST Call of Duty game they make!

This game not only offers a great single player experience but also now the game offers a newly revamped spec ops mode, allowing players to further expand their solo experiance in a range of tactically challenging missions or complete the tasks with a friend in co op, not only can a player complete missions this time around but also compete in a mode fairly similar to horde or a more combative zombies in the mode called survival, as you progress through the waves of continously stronger enemies fighting to survive with the limited munitions you gain from the beginning and with a skilled player can turn the fight against the hard opposition with the use of killstreaks, perks and other equipment. And finally to the prestigious online mode which is already one of the best in the market now is better, with a feel of both modern warfare 1 and 2, 3 offers a player now a larger range of gameplay through the use of the newly formed strike packages giving players the ability to use a range of different kill streaks that will help their type of player. This game also offers an huge amount of challenges giving the player a big sense of achievement when his/her screen displays the players achievements and gains titles and emblems to show offer furthermore the bigger range of camo's that can be earned also giving the player more bragging rights. simply a great conclusion to a great franchise!

In both modern warfare 1 and 2 there were levels I just wanted to play over and over. But this time I would probably only play the campaign to get achievements at most. There is nothing new to the campaign besides awesome weapons. The story is short about 4-6 hours on normal at most. And what little story there is, it is just a reboot of the combined ideas of modern warfare 1 and 2. I had no "wow" moment I had more of a "here we go again". For the campaign the gameplay is the same but the story is old and feels like a reboot. The multiplayer has become more "balanced" or as I like to call it become more "unrealistic". Shotguns are now pea shoots at most. And the multiplayer is mostly the same as modern warfare 2. The addition of survival adds a lot of fun but getting stuck with the guy who leaves his post to take your kills and results in you getting flanked by the enemy gets old fast. Survival is enjoyable but it does not allow you the customization nor the number of guns that you can get in multiplayer. As a result it feels unfinished and not as enjoyable as it could have been. Spec ops is back with no difference what so ever to modern warfare 2. All and all the campaign is a disappoint; as it brings nothing new to the table, same with both the multiplayer and spec ops. The only thing remotely new is survival and that is incomplete. All I can say is congrats Activision on sucking the life out of another great game. Expand

The major Call of Duty fanboys will defend COD games regardless of what was served up by Activision and the developers but as an unbiased gamer I can give a true and accurate review. The campaign is not great which is expected given past form. It is very rare to see a top quality FPS single player and I would say the last top quality ones were Half Life 2 and Episode 1 & 2. Multiplayer though is even worse and any comments about this being MW 2.5 are well justified. Visuals and audio are second rate and the map design is poor with maps being too small and quickly forgettable. Then there is the fact that there are still no dedicated servers which makes online gaming still a game of chance and don't believe this nonsense they have spouted about dedicated servers costing 'billions of dollars' as it is complete lies. The fact is the Call of Duty series is living off the success of COD 4 which was a good game in its day but the last three instalments have been well below standard. The series is simply now aimed at the 15 and under who will insist it is still brilliant but take it from someone who knows what is quality and what is not. This is just not good enough. Expand

But was it worth it is the question? Now true enough it does provide some fun hours online with a decent multiplayer progression system we all know and love. And even provides an ok campaign which sadly is extremely short. But in my opinion MW3 was nothing more than a modern warfare 2 expansion pack that at best should have been sold at no more than $39.99 if that. The graphics, while decent, were slightly up from MW2 and of course for the battlefield 3 faithful they will say its no where close which is absolutely true. But of course graphics is not the main draw for any game... what good is graphics if the game just sucks? MW3 does provide a decent balanced multiplayer which to me is the most balanced to date. The lag is minimal and the net code seems to be great with awesome hit detection.. BUT there are some weapon balance issues that need to be work on with a patch. The campaign is very predictable but does keep the pace decent to keep you entertain but dont expect any OMG moments. The campaign is also short which if you are a average player expect to breeze through with about 4-5 hours of gameplay.. longer on harder difficultites maybe of course. Bugs were minimal throughout my playthrough so it was a tightly knit experience with maybe some AI issues here and there but nothing out the ordinary. Speaking on AI in MW3.. nothing has really changed.. constant spawn until you move up or clear an objective but this is not a tactical game.. its basically an extreme rail shooter.. and it does it well. So with that being said.. if you go into this game just expecting a decent fun time with great multiplayer moments with friends you may be pleased.. IF you fell for the marketing hype and the "biggest launch in video game history" you will most likely be disappointed when you pop in the game and have a play-through. Its not a bad game at all.. but its nothing innovative. It is a modern warfare 2 expansion pack for 59.99. Kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I say it deserves a decent.. good.. old.. average.. run of the mill.. 5. Expand

They brought in new guns and perks, gun levels, and gun perks. Those are all very good. But, some of the new guns are extremely over-powered. The game has been sped up to make it better for people who like to rush in. There is very little strategy involved, especially in the modes of Team Deathmatch and Kill Confirmed. The only strategy there is "look here, look there, try not to get shot, and kill enemies as fast as possible". This game is really built for the types of players who want to race to see who can get the best score, the fastest. The last part is what I have a problem with. It also seems like the maps have been made more compact, with shorter ranges of sight requiring faster reactions and higher sensitivities. In addition with the fact that players move more quickly, this makes the game frustratingly fast-paced. It's so sped up, in fact, that the fire-rate on most of the automatic weapons makes it seem like someone hit you once and killed you. This is a step down from the level of Black Ops. It's probably even worse than MW2. I suggest to anyone considering getting this game to take little stock in the "critics" who gave this game high scores, and instead listen to the actual players. Instead of this game, get Skyrim, Saints the Third, Battlefield 3, or something else that you find interesting, because this game is not worth a $60 investment. Expand

However, the similarities to previous titles and multiplayer frustrations really bring down the score for me. Disappointing. Now I here that the developers are begging people to give it a higher score on this site...maybe instead of trying to pad ratings they should actually read these comments and figure out why it is scoring so low. It sells well I guess so they will keep on pushing the same game out every year. Oh and also COD Elite isn't working properly, of which I paid $50 so that is another rip-off. I am overall pleased with the weapons and the killstreaks and such, although they do seem a bit worse than the MW2 system, so i give those a 5. The maps and servers however are terrible. The lag is tremendous because there are no dedicated servers and the maps are the worst of the past 4 COD games. They are flat with no multi-level fighting and awfully cluttered. Overall they are a disaster and receive a 0, therefore this game rates a 2 on my scale because it doesn't deserve to be rounded up. Expand

Alright, first of all let me say a couple of things:
    1. Most of these negative reviews are Battlefield 3 "fanboys."
    2. The game is NOT similar to MW2 and COD4, look at the graphics. You critics need better glasses. 3. Riots Shield break? What do you expect, Captain America shields? 4. Overpowered weapons? Stop putting it on the weapons and look at yourself. Review: The Good: - Lengthy

    The Bad:
    - Cliche scenes.

I actually really liked Call of Duty MW 1 because that game did something new and innovative not only for COD but the FPS genre in general but since than Call of Duty games have done nothing for me and have gone completely downhill. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was looking forward to this game even though it is a yearly release. I am still very impressed with the awe dropping performance of the single player campaign even though there were some annoying querks. For instance, shooting from the back of the truck in the chase will lead right to death once the doors are opened because the bullets were able to go through the door from the attacking Russian Humvee from behind. I got stuck in that part for a 5 hours before I had to restart the mission since I had a repetitive cycle. I could not change my strategy either because of a forced Quick time event. Dont get me wrong I like quick time events, in my opinion, they add to the cinematic experience. Something that also happened was random RPG's shooting and killing me when I am trying to kill other people that are shooting at me. I think that part needed a little more QA and that is something I didn't expect since it was never in the previous modern warefare games, the game has such high production budget with so much hype and attention to it, and not to mention 5 Activision studios putting their work in this game. Overall, I did like the Campaign though as the story was great! the cutscenes were great, and the environments look amazing as well! I have not had a chance to play spec ops mode yet, but I played a few hours of multiplayer and I was dissapointed than ever. Enemies spawn too much behind the player, so every time I am spawning there is always an enemy next to me or one that has visibility to me. That is not good because sometimes it takes a while to get used to where you and your team are after spawning. I don't think there was enough repo steps/QA in order to make sure that multiplayer functions like it should. I know it is suppose to be a fast past arcade style shooter, but you can still make it fast, balanced, and fair. One thing about this game as a mechanic or feedback loop that I hate is when I get shot, and I try to shoot back simultaneously and I cant because my upper body seems to want to jolt up when I get shot to prevent from shooting back. This makes no sense to me and it is completely unnatural. Even though the single player was solid besides a few placed quick time events and random RPG one hit kills that happened too often...It is a mediocre game compared to the first and second Modern Warfare games. Innovation and time would have been better, as well as making a longer single player and/or more spec ops missions. The other part that kills this game is lack of PC support (hence why pc sales did bad) for graphics and for ranked dedicated servers. This game is not worth $60. Expand

We have the giant explosive set pieces that we grew to love in this games predecessors, that used to leave us in awe wanting more, but now we find ourselves bored and weary of this repetitive formula that Activision has churned out. The younger generation will find themselves jumping straight into the multiplayer and turning a blind eye to the campaign for a few months to come, and will most likely be satisfied with screeching at other players for their superior play style and on the other hand, shouting 'noob' at the top of their voice when they've secured the game winning kill.

For the rest of us, however, this is a different story. Where we find ourselves staring at what seems to be just a shameless copy of Modern Warfare 2, whilst complacent Activision and their new counterpart Sledgehammer Games are sleeping in their piles of money, not giving a toss about what the user base wants. I even think Sledgehammer's studio head, Glen Schofield, cry for help was just a stunt to get its loyal fanbase of under 16's to up its metacritic score to help him sleep in his piles of money at night.

However, I can see some good coming from the biggest entertainment launch event of all time. I can see a revolution, where gamers will eventually stand up to the money making machines and say 'Enough is enough', and demand some innovation and ingenuity from the people that are making billions of dollars from their pockets. Maybe we will eventually see 'reviewers' actually giving a game an honest view based on the pioneering qualities of a game, rather than what the fan base, and studios, want to hear. Maybe we will see studios realising that using the same recycled code and graphics with the same linear storyline over and over, isn't productive (I mean, what else can they be doing with their time?) and needs to stop.

This game is an incredible addition to the series, and I don't understand half of all the hate this game is receiving. People complain about how the game appears to be a "MW2 map pack" or a refurbished version of that game, but this rings true for many sequels and MW3 shouldn't be the only game chastised for this. People complain about how the game appears to be a "MW2 map pack" or a refurbished version of that game, but this rings true for many sequels and MW3 shouldn't be the only game chastised for this. A few recent titles that come to mind are Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, and Uncharted 3, all of which were great games in their own right, but brought very few innovations to the single player / multi player experience where as MW3 has brought a myriad of new ideas to the multi player experience.

If you consider the addition of the strike packages to the kill streak system, not to mention the new kill steaks themselves brings a new dynamic challenge to the multi player experience. The support package allows for more tactical and team based game play, a fix to a common complain that the call of duty series was simply an "arcade run and gun shooter". New multi player game modes such as kill confirmed also support the new team based play styles the franchise is supporting. Horde mode has been introducted to the series, and while it lacks the 4 player experience other titles have had, it is a good first attempt for the series. A big problem is that many people consider the treyarch and infinity ward / sledgehammer games versions of Call of duty to be synonymous, where as veterans of the series can attest that this is not the case. The new additions to MW3 may have existed in Black Ops, but it is new to this franchise and thus worth noting. Split screen multi player is another new addition that makes LAN parties with your friends a much easier experience. While the wager matches have been moved to strictly private match and LAN parties, they have added new modes such as Juggernaught which adds a new dynamic to this experience as well. Last but not least the returning mode of Spec Ops has been revamped and improved upon. The campaign provides the same sort of evocative and emotional storytelling and game play that many modern shooters lack and skip over, and provides an adequate conclusion to the epic story that began back in 2007. Overall Modern Warfare 3 is a superb shooter overall, and provides more innovations to the experience than the last Call of Duty installation Black Ops. This game does not deserve all the hatred it receives, and this reader suspects it is perpetrated mostly by internet trolls and active members of the Battlefield 3 community. As a final note I will leave you with this, if you don't like sequels being similar to their successful predecessors don't buy them; Modern Warfare 2 was an amazing game that broke sales records both within and outside the gaming industry, and as such the plan of improving upon an already successful game by keeping its roots and adding new innovations make sense to me.

The worst thing in this game is the camping if anything this game allows more camping than the past games there is just to many spots to sit and just pick people off with out having to put any effort in. Another thing that feels broken is the re-spawning which places you way to close to the enemies and vice versa effectively stopping you from continuing your kill streak . Despite having 2 studios working on this game you can actually notice the drop in quality now that half of the original infinity ward team has left activision this game was rushed and should of stayed in development for a longer time instead of pushing it out so quickly just to make money. It's very clear to me the map makers at Sledgehammer are not CoD players at all. They took MW2 and multilated it. What an absolute disappointment. My hope lies solely with Treyarch. Sledgehammer needs to be dumped by Electronic Arts ASAP!

A bit disappointed by the moment. The campaign is ok but the visuals look outdated and recycled from previous COD games. The multi is more similar to Black Ops than MW2, especially the clustered maze-like maps with horrible spawns. I recommend to try it before buying.

Multiplayer only impressions. Positives - good quantity of maps (16), noob tubing no longer an issue, shotguns now primary weapons, no ridiculously overpowered weapons (as was the case with the M16 in MW1), smooth 60fps, fewer cheap claymore deaths, interesting having to choose between the different strike packages, killstreak bonuses seem less overpowered vs MW2. When news broke out about the whole Infinity Ward / Activision fallout over the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West, I became very skeptical about the future of Modern Warfare 3. After playing through the campaign on Veteran and giving the online multiplayer a week of play, I must report that the skepticism was well deserved. This is by far the easiest COD I have played on VeteranWhen news broke out about the whole Infinity Ward / Activision fallout over the firing of Vince Zampella and Jason West, I became very skeptical about the future of Modern Warfare 3. After playing through the campaign on Veteran and giving the online multiplayer a week of play, I must report that the skepticism was well deserved. This is by far the easiest COD I have played on Veteran difficulty, taking a mere 6 hours to complete from beginning to end, and feels more like an interactive roller coaster ride than anything else, shooting popup targets as you go.
Multiplayer is where longevity comes into play for an FPS, and to be perfectly blunt, this is what I was most pissed off about. The fun to be had in multiplayer is evident, but the feeling that you were ripped off soon sinks in when you realize this is pretty much the same game we were playing 2 years ago with a new paint job. The new killstreaks aren't as enjoyable to play around with, all the "new" perks and weapons are just retweaks of existing COD staples (even the deathstreaks and weapon perks are just conditional perks mostly from older games). Compounding the distaste is the horrible map designs and spawn locations. The game launched with over 10 maps to play with, but the fact that most of the maps are similar in confinement and lack any real creativity is a shame.
Weapon imbalances are abound, which will hopefully be rectified via patches ala BlackOps. Some weapons such as shotguns and some smg and AR's are completely outclassed in everyway by others.

Gone are all the stats menus that came in-game with BlackOps, instead you are relegated to using Call of Duty Elite, an app for your XBox that employs clan connectivity and allows you to see in-depth stats, and of course if you want the real meat and potatoes for this app you need to pay an annual fee. The new highlight of the multiplayer is Kill Confirmed, a mode of deathmatch that tries to discourage camping by forcing players to gather tags off downed enemies in order to score. The only problem is that it actually employs camping as well, as many individuals will use the tags as bait. This is not a problem of the game itself, but the community at large who wish increase their personal kill to death ratio than actually contribute to a winning game. In conclusion, I would have felt much more comfortable paying $40 for what feels more like an expansion pack than full-fledged new game, but at the current $60 retail value you are paying too much. And considering the fact that Activision will be releasing maps packs often for this game, over the course of the year you are looking to spend atleast $90 for this game alone, even more if you are a subscriber to the COD Elite service.

Don't forget the times that BF3 servers where down, (MULTIPLE TIMES) which also happened on day 1 of release. Besides, why would they change a ton of stuff in MW3 when you knew the story had to continue, EVERYONE! loved MW2, so why would they change everything about MW3 if people enjoyed what they where playing already. I honestly don't know why this game is scoring so low with other user reviews. This game is a sequel, as such it's going to build upon what the games before it had already laid down. It's not going to be a distinctly different game, and it shouldn't. If it was going to have completely different core mechanics and gameplay, then it wouldn't be a Call of Duty, it would be a new IP. On multiplayer, the tweaks such as Strike Packages, new perks & guns, weapon leveling, and new modes (Team Defender/Kill Confirmed) all do good to expand on the prior entries in the series for an overall good multiplayer. The campaign is much the same as the rest in the series, and anyone who thinks the campaigns in any Battlefield/Call of Duty game are a focus point doesn't really get why the game was made in the first place. It's a compliment to the game, but wouldn't hold on its own without multiplayer. Survival in Spec Ops is a great idea, but its biggest downfall is not allowing 4 players like the Zombies modes on the other Call of Duty's. These modes are best when a group of people get to coordinate to play....not just two people. Lastly, Elite seems like a good idea, but as of this writing, been plagued by server issues so it's hard to say how or what that will bring to the series. Overall, a fairly good entry in the series. Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
