MW3 shows evidence that Activision and IW have been severely impaired by the loss of Camp, Zampanella and the better half of IW's staff. Kudos to Bethesda and Rockstar for keeping their integrity (so far) in publishing only reputable developers and for their active involvement in developing themselves.

It´s Modern Warfare 2.5. A Michael Bayeiysh campaign with no real impact from the player but fun. Multiplayer finally polished, but old.

Same thing*, different day. It´s been the same formula for what, seven sequels? Playing Call of Duty it´s like being in Truman Show - you are a mere spectator in a big budget Michael Bay show, always following someone who´s telling you what to do. The Call of Duty series is creating a whole generation of dumb players. What a shame.

Sadly MW3 has ruined the franchise for me - multiplayer has lost it's fun thanks to an unbalanced kill streak system that just takes all the skill (and the fun) out of the game. If you like being blown to bits by random explosions, predato missiles or attack helicopters every 15-20 seconds (it really is that bad), then go nuts - but it's not for me...

Let's be honest. Most of these negative reviews are from Battlefield fanboys who have never played this game. Pathetic. The truth is, this is the best COD since COD4, perhaps even slightly better. Great singleplayer, multiplayer and spec ops. This game is similar to MW2, but that is because it is a sequel. BF3 is VERY similar to BC2, which is fine. This game improves on the already great formula.

Honestly here, the only reason I seem to find why this game has a bad user rating is because people complain how it is "too much like Modern Warfare 2". It's like saying Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was too much like the first movie. (Enough Ranting) Now this game is, in my opinion, a very good game. The multi-player is a great upgrade from the last game and the new kill-streaks and the (new) types of perks make the multiplayer much more enjoyable. Now I do agree, they could of used a different engine for this game unlike their last one, but it is hardly noticeable. You will be too much into destroying the enemy team than standing and staring and rocks and bushes to see how "real" they are. Now with the campaign, it is just fantastic. It combines a good sense that you are actually in a world war and not just another video game. The story is fantastic and always keeps you on edge with twists and the epic battles. The campaign was interesting and entertaining, but I beat it on hard and found all the intel within 12 hours. Spec ops is actually the best part of the game. Again, all the missions I have beaten withing 12 hours and now I am working on the survival mode. There is a decent amount of replay value at the survival, but in no way will you be able to play as long as a zombies match, and personally i find zombies to be more entertaining. This leads me to the multiplayer, wnich is the reason I bought the game, and where I expect to get my value for the game. I cannot stand to play the multiplayer. They have taken steps back from mw2 and black ops. Every map is extremely similar. Quick scoping is back, 2-3 bullets gets a kill with any gun. The assault killstreaks barely can get kills since everything is indoors. And the support killstreak has a stealth bomber which is overpowered and will end anyone who is using the assault packages streak. Its not enjoyable, I bought the hardened thinking i was going to log countless hours, and after less than 20 i cant stand to even play more than 1 game. Save your money. They tricked me but hopefully someone else will save themselves from buying a terrible game. Expand

If you need a new call of duty game to play with you friends, then Modern warfare is the game for you, but if you game for any other reason, then avoid this at all costs. Campaign is short, but well paced, reasonably fun, but not especially compelling or thought provoking, the issue being that the majority of the campaigns most impressive moments are essentially first person cut-scenes. The combat is solid, but has lost its edge, where call of duty was the example of flawless first person shooter mechanics, it now feels clunky and awkward, while 60 frames per second keeps everything on screen smooth, your movement as a player is not. Crouching, running and vaulting over obstacles feels clunky and slow, and weapons have an unnatural accuracy and lack of recoil that just doesn't feel right. Graphically the game also falls short, while the various studios that produce the game clearly put a lot of detail into many of the levels and character models, the games low muddy looking textures aren't worthy of the these efforts. Lighting also fails to impress, being almost entirely baked into the textures, with little to no dynamic lighting, with the only change in light being the shadows on your weapon. Weapons also look peculiar, a step back from previous titles, the guns are all held at strange angles, and are oddly proportioned. Survival mode is worth you time, but if you have ever played a call of duty game before, then multiplayer is useless. Only buy this game if you have to. Expand

In my opinion Modern Warfare 3 is a $60 map and gun pack for Modern Warfare 2 (MW2 is also a map and gun pack for Call of Duty 4) that has a horde mode taken from Gears of War 2 and a very short and boring story. The Online part of the game has the same problems as MW2 where you have enemies spawning on you and bad maps to play on.

Good, but we've seen it before. One of the complaints I've always had with the series is that the scenery rarely wows me. The issues with MW3 come in multiplayer. It's laggy and, as you can see from other reviews, it is so so so much like MW2. Very little has changed. Some perks have been replaced but the replacements are the same thing in the end. The maps are ridiculously like the MW2 maps. In fact you will have no problem recognizing every map and where it comes from in MW2. Titles, emblems, etc just aren't exciting anymore.

Is this game worth the money? You 'll probably be more entertained by other titles this year (Skyrim, for example) and you'll probably play BattleField 3 a little longer (but that game is frustrating in its own ways as well). If you have the money to spare then get MW3 because it does have memorable moments but only if you have the money to spare...

A step sideways for FPS and the series. I found the gameplay to be much the same as previous MW games while the maps were less fun and worse designed. I would not recommend this game, and would suggest to those interested in the COD experience to pick up MW1 or MW2 for a better time.

All they had to do was take away the extra explosive damage perks and it would have been fine. Certain perks and heartbeat sensors and knifing still beats a gun add an unrealistic feel to the game. If they wanted to take this game to the next level they should have teamed up with Bungie and added the vehicle element to the game on multi-player. The multiplayer, however, is what they took a big step backwards on. The maps are completely uninspired with the spawn points being far worse than the predecessors. The graphics and the gun sounds are recycled from previous games (even cod4). The hit detection is far worse than MW2. If you still enjoy Call of Duty, you're better off saving 60 bucks and continuing to play MW2 or cod4. The developers still fail to innovate. A new streak system, very few new perks, and a survival mode that resembles Zombies is just no reason to buy this game. By the way, Activision already announced a new Call of Duty game for 2012. This is not a game, it's a business plan. No innovation at all, it's just the same copy and paste game as ever before. At least games like BF3 have some new features, but the only thing that changes in COD are the perks and slightly different guns, it's all the same.

There isn't a line of sight long enough to make a sniper rifle useful. And the connection problems are ridiculous. All the weapons feel like they have been nerfed. And from a financial stand-point, this is wise for the designers, because it will be harder to get a kill, thus harder to level up, and so you play longer. Well played Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, whatever you are now. Did they even hire military consultants? Or did they just watch a marathon of Rambo and Delta Force? I began playing COD4 Modern Warfare years ago and thought it was a good game but it wasn't enough to get me away from Halo 3 at the time. Modern Warfare 2 came along and blew me away. I was really excited about Black Ops but in comparison to MW2 it was a horrible game. Black Ops took away many of the things that made MW2 great. All the weapons seemed to be vastly under powered and it felt like it took 10 rounds or more to get a kill with an assault rifle. On to MW3. If you enjoyed MW2 you will be annoyed by a number of things that they either took away or split up so you have to decide to have parts of what you would have had. For example, I used to use Slight of Hand Pro as my first perk in MW2. It gave you faster reload, faster swapping weapons and faster ADS (aiming down sights). In MW3 you can have Slight of Hand as your first perk but you only get faster reload and faster swapping weapons. If you want faster ADS you have to choose Quick Draw as your second perk. We'll come back to this in a minute....

In MW2 I used to have a shotgun as my secondary. MW3 followed Black Ops lead in not allowing a shotgun as a secondary. The only way that I can have a shotgun along with my assault rifle is if I choose Overkill as my second perk which allows me to carry a second primary weapon. So, do I choose Quickdraw for the faster ADS or Overkill for my secondary shotgun? Other aspects include some things I miss and others I don't. -In MW3 they added a lot of sway to your gun when looking down the sights, more than what you would experience in real life. In MW2 if you aimed at something it wouldn't sway even a pixel (which I loved).

-I don't miss Commando (as I never used it and would always get frustrated that someone would lunge 15 feet to stab me).

-I do miss Stopping Power because I feel like it takes too many rounds to kill someone. -I do miss the fact that Scavenger won't allow you to pick up more Claymores. -I have mixed feelings about not having OMA (One Man Army) because of all the people that used it to keep reloading the grenade launcher. I would use it on occasion to replenish ammo on a Scar-H that didn't have much ammo to start with or to replenish Claymores. -Explosives are WEAK! (especially the grenade launcher)

-Maps are horrible! MW2 had so many multiple level buildings and maps with open spaces. MW3 just uses corridors with multiple entrances and it makes it feel claustrophobic.

-Spawning placement is horrible. It seems like every time I kill someone I immediately get shot in the back. Every time I spawn I feel like I get to shoot an enemy in the back. I thought I was crazy at first but my friends mentioned the same thing and then I read other reviews on here mentioning the same issue.

This game feels more like Black Ops than another Modern Warfare although its no where close to as bad as Black Ops. I told myself I would level up and give this game a shot. I just hit level 80 and I'm going to continue to level up a few more weapons but I feel myself wanting to return to MW2. Hope this helps!

The funny thing is that the game critics always criticize every new sequel that doesn't bring any originality or any innovation, i.e. something new to the table, but for some reason COD is always excluded from the category.

And the fact that they went on twitter and begged people to rate the game good so it would show a good score on meta-critic, is just pathetic. PATHETIC I SAY!

MW3 becomes more polished with each iteration and this is no exception. . The maps are terrible. The voice comms are scrambled, the local search option has been removed, the dive to prone option has been removed, and the mechanics of the game mean that the host advantage is significant making for some very frustrating games. Seems to have all the same glitches as MW2 at launch. People putting button images in clan tags, glitches to get under the maps, being able to use sniper rifles like one shot kill assualt rifles due to being able to 'quick scope'. These things should never make it out of testing. The couple of new game types in MP are good though, kill confirmed and team defender.
As for the single player again this is poor. It's basically 80% cut scene. Just because you can control the player doesn't make it any less of a cut scene. Even played through on Veteran it's a breeze.
The only redeeming feature seems to be survival mode. It's basically the MW3 version of Zombies. This would have benefited from allowing more than 2 players though.
This is also the first title to integrate with Elite. That has been a complete disaster and over a week after launch it's still not working properly. How they expect people to actually pay money is beyond me. The fact that people are paying says a lot about the power of the COD franchise.
Overall a poor and lazy effort. Absolutely no new ideas here, a rehash of MW2 with worse maps.

yikes. thank god I didn't end up spending any money on this. It was immediately obvious when I started a match at a friends what a horrible remake of MW2 this was. BF3 was a great investment.

I have played all the COD games for years. MW3 is terrible!!! Single player mode is very predicable, they did nothing new 4 hrs and your done. Most of all multiplayer was very disappointing. Its like a $60 map pack. I have never played any of the battlefield games but I will give them a try. The only good about this game is the 2012 Jeep 4x4!

Modern Warfare 3 is just another rushed call of duty game with practically everything re-used. Most likely just compete with Battlefield 3.
The only people I found to be buying this game is the non-gamers that play once in awhile. Which don't know a good game when they seen one.
Over-rated. Should of called it MW2.5

There is absolutely nothing new about the newest Call of Duty. It is essentially a $60 map pback. No updated graphics and is definitely missing the crotch grabbing enthusiasm of the MW2 story line. Additionally, it has some of the worst multiplayer maps that I've ever seen and as such holds little to no replayability for even the most enthusiastic fps fan.

While MW3 may be fun for 15 dollars I don't like to pay sixty dollars for map packs. Other than new maps all this game brings to the table is a campaign that doesn't know the word juxtaposition, new guns, and new perks. I remember when a sequel to a game used to be a new experience not a rehashed slightly prettier game. Overall just not worth it to the average consumer

I give it a 10. Common its Call Of Duty...Its the best game you ever played. The reason these scores are so low is because people who enjoy it don't want to put the controller down long enough to review it. It's tough to argue the sheer amount of people playing the game!

This game does not deserve the low scores. Sure the formula is a bit stale now. But if you forget about the 4 games that came before it and score it on its own merits it's actually a good game. Then there is the Spec Ops with Mission Mode AND IW's take on Zombies with Survival Mode to keep even the most hardcore gamer happy for days on end. The Missions are longer than MW2 and this time around can be played with anyone online, Not just friends.
You cant review a Call of Duty game without escaping the Quickscoping and Camp fest that is Multiplayer.
Straight away you can tell it has had more love and attention than Single player and Spec Ops but has it payed off....
No it hasn't to be honest. A lot of the guns seem under powered and those EVIL Quickscopers are still there with their stupid ways of getting easy kills. My biggest gripe with MW3 MP is the game modes like One in a Chamber, Gun Game and Infection are for PRIVATE MATCH ONLY. Which is a shame because if Black Ops had one thing over MW2 (Apart from Zombies) was the different types of game modes available to play with people all over the world.
Sure the engine feels outdated and Elite is Broke. But if you want to know how WW3 ends you need this game.....

The game play was fun too...again with AC130 which is enjoyable...A10, remote control drone etc...the Spec-Ops is full of options and is fun too!

The Modern Warfare games were once innovative and interesting, but this is simply a copy and paste of Modern Warfare 2, with absolutely no saving grace. The story is predictable, the graphics are unchanged, the gameplay is identical, and the story is boring. Unless something is done, this game could be one of the final nails in the first person shooter genre.

Until patches start to roll out (hopefully) this game is sub bar. It has unbalanced perks/guns, lag issues, map glitching, horrible matchmaking system and awful maps. Add CoD elite not working 95% of the time to that mix, and you got one big mess in your hands. Only good part in the game is Survival mode in spec ops. Even single player is this time dull and boring.

The original game was a genre-defining masterpiece, and whilst the second chapter never lived up to that standard, still it was far from a poor game. That being the case it would take something very special indeed to disappoint this time around surely. Sadly, that's exactly what we got, an incredibly disappointing game that bears no relation to the games that have preceded it. It is a pale imitation of the former glories of the Modern Warfare series, a very cheap knock-off. There are three core elements of gameplay;

    1. Single player campaign - this is actually pretty good, and in most ways is actually far superior to the campaign in Modern Warfare 2. Gameplay is varied to a degree, and a satisfying resolution to the story started in CoD4 is provided. 2. Spec-Ops (co-op) - what they'd done here is take the spec-ops missions from Modern Warfare 2 and split it out - half of the game is the traditional spec-ops objective-based missions, the other half, "survival" is a poor attempt at a Modern Warfare equivalent of Treyarch's "zombie mode". I'm afraid it's incredibly dull and loses what little appeal it has very quickly. It's incredibly easy and you'll find yourself getting to round 20 before it even starts to provide a challenge. 3. Multiplayer Campaign - frankly, this is why most people buy these games, and I'm afraid Modern Warfare is a complete and utter mess. If you bought into the hype then it sounded great - no game-ending nuke, no infinite sprint, no infinite noob-tubes via OMA (in fact noob-tubes were even going to be nerfed!), gone was the commando 'death lunge/stab' - it sounded great. Unfortunately, it's all irrelevant. The maps are incredibly mundane with little variety. Judged against their CoD4 and MW2 counterparts they're incredibly poorly designed. That's just the start of the problems - hit detection appears to be way off. Again. You'll find yourself shot around corners far more often than you've ever been before on any of the other CoD games. There's also an extraordinary amount of lag, particularly when you're hosting. Rumours abound of 'lag compensation' which automatically screws whoever is hosting. Whether or not this is true, I don't know. I just know that when I'm hosting, it says I've got a 4 bar connection, yet the lag makes it almost unplayable. In conclusion, after this shambles of a game I can't seriously see myself buying another CoD game. Activision clearly couldn't care less about fans, otherwise they'd never have let fake IW and Sledgehammer games get away with such shoddy testing. Any amount of focused testing should have driven out all of the issues that currently blight the game. The fact that they're in there leads you to wonder if they even bothered to test it at all. A terrible game that barely deserves to be considered a Call of Duty game. Activision should be ashamed that they've hoodwinked so many people into buying what is essentially a broken game.

Terrible game. Dated, incoherent, unbalanced and over priced. The single player is short but not short enough to make the holes in the plot disappear. And it lags terribly on the unbalanced, poorly designed multiplayer.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
