Over hyped.... Mainstream.... Commercial.... Definitely not worth the price, I feel like Iv'e been ripped off. Better off with Crysis 2, Rage, or even Homefront!! in my opinion Call of duty died after No 4 ( the best one) So keep away from this waste of money and go buy a decent game that is not going to rip you off.

It goes through the paces, stuff happens, and I wasn't thrilled. The problem is nothing is too fresh in the campaign and a lot of the game feels the same. I am not entirely sure what they could have added or changed but either way they didn't do a ton. I feel like there should have been much more. That being said, the reworked multiplayer is a blast, especially with the new killstreak system that appeals to both hardcore and casual players alike. I love it. The Kill Confirmed Mode is a blast. Weapon leveling is pretty cool. Haven't tried everything yet but so far multiplayer has impressed. Has not wowed me though. If you really liked Modern Warfare 2 and aren't thrilled with anything else out there right now, then I would say go with Modern Warfare 3. If you want to do something really different, go with Battlefield 3 (Haven't played it myself but it has gotten good reviews and I am fan of the series). Modern Warfare 3, some cool new stuff, exciting, new game. Would have given it a 8.5 otherwise. I am docking 1.5 points for the campaign, but docking another 1.5 for the fact that I played a lot of this game before and with 2 years in the making, I should have been wowed, not just impressed. Call of duty. It's good, it'f fun, it's the same as it was in the original MW. While it's fun and good to play there is almost nothing really new here. If you've played any other call of duty, then you've played this. If you haven't then this is a great game.

to quote someone else, who said it perfectly, I have to agree...

"This is the most disappointing one after BO and MW2. Looks exactly as CoD 4, with barely any change in mechanics and gameplay."

It's the same exact game you have been playing for the last 4 years. You've got to be kidding me, why is this game 60$? To me it doesn't make sense to keep releasing a new game every year when the games are rushed; it feels as though every COD is a cash-in. Quit wasting your money with this game.

Spec Ops has been upgraded into Survival mode. It is a very fun and is a great part of the overall game but i feel it could of easily have been put into Modern Warfare 2 as downloadable content. There are also the Spec Ops missions. These missions are built from the campaign. These also could be downloadable content. Multiplayer is the same as Cod 4 but with improved guns and killstreaks. You also have the introduction of Strike Packages which is the best addition to multiplayer. The maps on the other hand are dull and boring and are not very exciting to play. The Graphics and Gameplay are the same as previous Modern Warfare's. With the introduction of Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2 engine, Modern Warfare 3 is way behind the other game engines. It is the same formula that the community loves and that is why Call Of Duty is so powerful now. But for future Call Of Duty games, a major change needs to happen. Expand

The single player of this game is good. However nothing really new here. The multi player would be awesome if they would fix the lag. I see people jumping all over the place. Also what's up with the lag... I get killed by a single bullet...but then in the theater it shows the other guy shoot a whole clip... clearly it's time for dedicated servers an no lag correction in the software.

Made an account to specifically put an end to this nonsense. It's funny that some of the negative reviews come from people who aren't good at the game, especially when IW made support packages for the sucky players. No logic there huh? Lol. You can't just buy a "new" game and expect to destroy everyone, period. That's just how it works. You play, get killed a lot and eventually get better. So to "those" players, stop quiting so easily and giving a game a 0 because your not destroying everyone. Now that that's outta the way, time to address the majority who keep saying its the same game. These are the EXACT same people who loved mw2 but complained when the problems came. All of them, I mean ALL of them said the exact same thing. "if they fixed the problems with mw2 it would be the BEST game". Well unfortunately they couldn't fix it.....until now. They give you exactly what you nipple babies wanted and somehow you still cry. Makes sense, doesn't it? They give you the best of cod 4, mw2 and black ops and still, you cry. Enough already. I'm seeing close to a million people online everyday, but yet it gets a 0? Stop it. To make matters worse, a lot of you keep crying about "innovation" but yet you really only wanted the problems to be fixed for balancing issues. Bunch of morons. Do you even know what you want? Also, to the battlefield community who rags on this game because theirs is "innovative"......you are also morons. Just like cod they add a couple different tweaks and things with their games and you think it's groundbreaking? Guess what?? It's the same thing as cod. If cod said they were running a new engine and it looked the exact same, you would swallow it all up. Every last drop. With no complaints and asking for seconds. I hate to break it to you, but bf3 and bfbc2 ARE THE SAME GAME. Just with different tweaks and things. Nothing extraordinary. Definitely nothing innovative. It's been the same for years just like cod. Nothing more to it. Last note, if you bought this game just for the single-player only to turn around and say that it's short and/or horrible....your an idiot whose parents locked you in a closet for their childhood. How do you not know its short? Do you not have any connection to the outside world? Idiots I swear. Just like the people who expected a whole different game. It makes a lot of money for a reason. Last bit of advice to everyone who doesn't follow this rule. Be your own person. Like the things you like and hate the things you hate. Don't jump on a bandwagon because it's what's "in" because in case you haven't noticed by now, hating this game is definitely what's "in". Expand

The story just felt like a ridiculous Michael Bay movie, storming castles, diamond mines, and hotels, all while controlling helicopters with iPads. But the story alone wasn't anywhere near as disappointing as the multiplayer. Or maybe it was just a map pack. I'm really not sure anymore. If it is just a map pack, it sure was a bad one. There may have been two or three maps I really enjoyed, but with such a low ratio it's hard to play through the usual rotation of bad maps. Frankly, I'm upset at Activision. And now with Sledgehammer practically begging for positive reviews, I think it will be a long time before I give them my money again. My copy of MW3 is back where it belongs, returned to the store. I will go through each aspect of the game, MW3 is the sequel to MW2 but has been released after black ops as part of the two year cycle, and with its release after black ops one would expect similar improvements on the previous game but MW3 looks almost identical to MW2. For the most part the gameplay is very similar to MW2. In Black ops (multiplayer) we could change in game sound settings, e.g turn game music off, choose type of sound system (headset, 5.1, 2.1 etc...) we never were able to do that with MW2 and its the same with MW3. Why on earth can we not change that? Black ops would allow us to turn the aim assist off (so did world at war), MW2 didnt and neither does MW3, I mean why cant I chose to disable it? I have been a call of duty fan since the first one many years ago and have since loyally purchased every game since, but this is where the line has to be drawn. Many people will not know Infinity Ward had lost many employees during the days of MW2 and since had to merge with another game developer, which was not an issue, but there are real signs of lazy work. Apart from what I have mentioned, there are some buildings which have been directly copied from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 1 and these buildings have had graphical updates. The voice chat quality online is horrible, black ops implemented an update which used the new HD codec provided by Mircosoft (a few months after black ops was released) so why did this update not make it to MW3? Again this is another copy any paste job by the looks of it. Im sure many will remember the hacks in MW2, 10th prestige lobbys, god mode etc...well clan tag hacks are back in MW3 and so are the worse ones (check certain forums). Modders have the exact same hacks running on MW3 which are not yet public but will soon be. I spoke to a casual gamer friend who previously purchased MW2 and black ops, when he first played MW3 his first comment was "Its exactly the same as MW2", he then stated his desire not to purchase the game. Im not a BF3 fanboy, I have a youtube channel with all sorts of games/gameplay and MW3 might be the best selling game of all time but its not worth the money I have paid for it. The only thing I can commend this game in the multiplayer realm is the fact that it is balanced but thats it. There is no innovation, new ideas or even passion when this game was created. The gameplay is good but I persoanlly dont think its worth the investment, I would suggest playing other games that have been released recently like batman, assassins creed, saints row. Those games will provide a decent experience because there will be an underwhelming feeling after playing this, Im already bored of it. I do not troll as I am trying to become a fair games journalist, but the review sites get paid off to give good reviews of games. MW3 deserves a very low score due to the lack of change or improvement but mainly because of the laziness of the developer who has clearly copied and pasted many aspects from previous games. All I can do is enjoy the other games out there and wait for GTA V. Expand

If you don't know anything about the drama going on between Jason West and Vince Zampella vs. Activision, then I suggest you do some catching up at IGN.com. Do a search on IGN.com about the lawsuit going on between these two guys (the original creators behind the Modern Warfare series) and Activision to learn more.

Once you know what's going on in this lawsuit, you will then know that MW3 was not made by the original creators of the Modern Warfare series. Actually its something like 30 of the top developers left Invinity Ward to go work with Zimpella and West over at Electronic Arts. So none of the top talent behind the series worked on MW3.

So in my opinion this is why we have a game that is no different, if not less, than what came with MW2 (graphics, controls, maps, story, spec ops, etc.). This is why the game brings nothing new to the table.

I agree with most of the users on this site in that this game is no more than MW2 2.5. I think Activision should have done something different with the this game. They should have realized that there's no way any team could have lived up to Zimpella and West's standard and creativity in such a short period of time.

What they should have done is made this game a summary of the Modern Warfare series on the these systems. They should have made a game that sort of paid tribute to the series and gotten themselves ready for MW3 on the new systems coming in a few years.

They could put this game out with all the fixes that annoyed people, included all the map from MW1 and MW2, included all spec ops missions, and just straight blew out of the multiplayer experience, really paying tribute to the entire series. And then maybe had a trailer that announced MW3 for XBOX 720 and PS4. I think doing this would have given Activision the time it needed to find a team that could really put something out that lives up to the standards we all expect from the MW series. But I still give it a good review. You should still buy the game because its still a solid experience and the multiplayer is still good, but not great. The multiplayer does feel a little slimmed down compared to its predecessor but it doesn't deserve a zero. I give the game an 8.0. I will give Activision another chance with the next Modern Warfare. I also can't wait to see what Zimpella and West are up to.

I am highly disappointed in this installment of the series. I am mainly interested in the multiplayer aspect of the game, so that is where I will focus: The maps are a jumbled mess. Every map feels like the same maze with different paint. From an objective-based perspective, you spend more time navigating the maze to reach an objective than you do assaulting or defending it.

    Much hate

Every map feels like the same maze with different paint. From an objective-based perspective, you spend more time navigating the maze to reach an objective than you do assaulting or defending it.

Much hate for bringing back Quickscoping. I know the fanbois love it, and they can feel like "real men" by pwning somebody with a sniper rifle, but it ruins a multiplayer game for me. In 3 hours of gameplay, I was quickscoped from across the map 9 times. A sniper rifle should be made to function as a sniper rifle, plain and simple. And don't get me started on the wannabes running around with the sniper rifle like an assault rifle. It should be nigh impossible to charge an objective with a scoped rifle and take out 4 defenders using submachine guns. But, in their infinite wisdom, the developers have catered to the fanbois again, and made qs even easier than before.

The graphics are... eh. Nothing eye-catching, but nothing horrible, either. It's just standard, run-of-the-mill scenery. Can't say I hate it, but wouldn't say I like it, either.

The lack of realism is offensive. Landing 9 shots from ANY gun should drop anyone but the Juggernaut, but this isn't the case. I can't count the number of times I've emptied a clip from the MP5 into someone, only to have them spin 180 degrees and drop me with one or two shots from their assault rifle.

The number of killstreak rewards bombarding the playing field is incredibly stupid. Running the Support class, you continue gaining your killstreaks THROUGH YOUR DEATHS. While this seems great in the beginning, it gets old quite quickly. You are constantly on someone's radar, and when you aren't, you are being hammered by Reaper rockets or other high-explosives.

The sound is horrible. Even running turtlebeaches, 9 times out of 10 you can't hear someone sprinting up behind you for a knife kill.

Anyway, there is much more I could complain about, including lag issues, matchmaking, and lack of originality, but I won't. Suffice to say, I'll probably make this my LAST Call of Duty purchase.

All of this was very foreseeable and has simply made me happy that I got this game for free from a friend who can't play it anymore after his PS3 broke (little sister poured milk on it :P).

The main problem with Call of Duty is the constant use of the same exact gameplay with close to no changes in each sequel. Now, you might be saying, "Well if Call of Duty made a huge innovation many people wouldn't be happy!" and you would be right. However, there is a solution to this. Stop. Making. New. CODS. The series is already on its eight title, and has failed to make large changes since the fourth one. Even worse, the only good change since the first one is the graphics. The major change in call of duty 4 was the addition of class customization. However, it's safe to say this wasn't a good change. I'm not saying that Russians shouldn't be using M4A1s, and that Americans shouldn't use an AK-47, like how it is in Battlefield 3. Call of Duty isn't meant to be realistic. If it was realistic, no one should be running around with a 30 pound sniper rifle faster than with a 10 pound light machine gun. However, the problem with all of this customization is that due to the serious lack of limits, players are free to exploit a single imbalance with the correct customization kits, forcing everyone to use the exact same class if they want to play a fair game. In battlefield 3, with the exception of a certain scope (which is being fixed soon anyway), the limitations on our customizations balance the game quite a bit.

That being said, the MP does get a bit too frantic and can be very frustrating due to the tiny maps that reward people who run laps around them. Kill confirmed and some of the new playtypes are a happy addition to the sometimes monotonous team deathmatch. Overall I wish IW branched out a little bit and added some bigger maps and more options for those who do not always want to run and gun. Although easier to get into and less tedious than BF3's maps and MP, MW3 can learn a thing or two from their main competition.

Either way, if you are a fan of shooters and have a high tolerance to being overwhelmed occasionally in MP, then get MW3. Too many people are just rating the game a 0 b/c they want it to fail, not b/c it is a bad game. This metacritic rating system is flawed, but hopefully enough rational individuals will give their honest opinion instead of just bombarding the ratings with 0's.

Stop your Twitter groveling Glen Schofield, your game deserves a "0", MW3 and Activision DESERVE it for disappointing MILLIONS of fans who were devoted countless single-player and multi-player hours into the Modern Warfare series to give us this rushed, tacked-on, copy-cat, sloppy, un-inventive, game that you dare to slap the "Call of Duty" mark on it. A little history about me: I've dropped easily hundreds of hours into MW2 multiplayer until all the hackers, quick-scopers, and all sorts of crap started showing up without a single patch to balance or fix the game and I dropped MW2, ticked beyond belief, and went to Battlefield instead. Black Ops brought me back with innovative and different feel and Zombies zombies zombies.
Now here comes MW3, like your ex-wife/girlfriend who comes back into your life after so many years after your bitter break-up, now all dressed up in sexy clothing and make-up trying to seduce you back...and when you fall for the trap...BAM, you realize you got played...underneath it all you realize that you're dealing with the same BS that made you hate the wench in the first place!! That was the feeling I had when playing my first hours of both Single Player and Multi-Player.

Some Lowpoints, to name a few: -- Lame single player campaign - "Lets chase Makarov around the globe, again and again storyline", Sequences are all rehash of MW2 sequences: bang bang, kill kill, sneak sneak, cheap deaths, many innocents die but we don't care, rehash AC-130 sequence, run run, someone "important" dies, boo hoo (not really), game over...all in a matter of a handful of hours where you simply...just...don't...care. -- Multi-Player - Spec Ops, rehash of single player, nuff said. Multi-player - Within THIRTY MINUTES of my experience, I got "quick scoped" over and OVER again!!??? ARRGHH!!! W...T...H!?? The cheap tricks are back!!?? They obviously DID NOT listen to the fans at all = Activision does not care about you. Strike packages are lame, especially the Support package which still REQUIRES kills to "support" your team. Kill streaks happen every 2 seconds with no breathing room. -- Multi-player maps are about 50% SMALLER in size it seems, where spawn-and-die is the recurring theme. There are no dynamics or good feel about ANY map that I have tried with any game type, and Kill Confirmed is a lame tack-on and forgettable. Weapon balancing is terrible no matter how you think about it.

In summary, my buddies and I who ran and pwned both MW2 and Black Ops multi-player literally STOPPED playing after just two hours of BS on MW3 multi-player. We all also play BF3 and HANDS-DOWN find that it is a better, more in-depth experience that MW3 would ever HOPE to achieve. So Glen Schofield, you've made half a billion dollars off of your loyal and devoted fans, and yet here on Metacritic your game stands at a lowly 3 score. Take your money and run, Infinity Ward got it right when it left Activision in the first place.

You'll be bored with them after a day. The Campaign is mediocre at best. It is painfully obvious that the COD:MW franchise has exhausted all of it's Shock and Awe in the first two series. It throws nothing shocking at you like "No Russian" or your guy dying in a Nuclear blast. The new characters it introduces are forgettable and the plot just has a predictable, flat and sudden end. I wouldn't complain if I had only spent like 29.99 for this down the road. But this isn't worth forking over $60. Now I have to wait until my next payday to purchase Skyrim.

Please do yourself a favor and save you $100 for something else you might want because this game is terrible. I had high hopes for this game after Black Ops was so bad but this game is unbelievably worse than Black Ops. Multiplayer is absolute garbage and only looks to make you angry rather than get any enjoyment out of it. If it is not the terrible lag getting you killed, it is the the terrible spawns. Just imagine killing someone only to have him spawn right behind you and shoot you in the back. Sound like fun? Then there is the $50 rip off that is Call Of Duty Elite, the service does not work! It is a glitchy, buggy mess, and they can't fix it.

On a positive note I guess I won't be wasting any time playing this game, which is probably a good thing.

The single player campaign was okay. It tied up the loose ends from the previous two COD MW games. I haven't tried Spec Ops yet. The MP is typical COD fare with a few new interesting game types. I really like the "Kill Confirmed" game type and the new strike packages. I feel that the game allows players to customize to their playing style with the different strike packages.

At the end of the day, COD is COD and other shooters like BF3 are different. Its like comparing Need for Speed to Forza 4, anyone with knowledge of the genre can tell you those games while with similar structure, differ insanely. The point is this COD train has already gone far off the tracks, and cannot be stopped. Every year now a new one in the series HAS to come out. So obviously, with a game based around what is essentially a point and click system with different colored walls to spice things up, asking for great innovation in between titles is a foolhardy notion. This game, like or hate the rest of the series, is the most solid well rounded of the titles. Sure the campaign was over the top, and was basically an endless corridor run, but the set pieces were interesting enough to keep me interested for the 5hr to beat it. Multiplayer is what these games are bought and played for, and in this regard this game shines. Spawns were greatly fixed from BO and the killstreaks have not only been toned down, but are now tailored to your play-style in terms of when and what you receive mid-match. The spec-ops mode extend the games value further. And if you have a bud to sit down with these missions are not to be overlooked.
In review, if you like to play your shooters alone, or at least lone wolf most of the time, go with COD. If your a team-based kind of player than BF3 might be a better choice. But don't knock COD because it hasn't 'evolved' or 'changed' over the years, what series has? Halo? Gears? Resistance? Killzone? All of these titles see little bone structure change between installments, only their graphics, weapons, and environments have been altered. If you want a varied and ever-changing genre, buy an Iphone, or get into the RPG scene. As shooters i believe will be emulating this game for many years to come.

Survival mode is a feature that has been added in this year and to be honest, as a big fan of WAW and BLOPS zombies i thought it would try to be too much like that and fail, put simply it's not the same, and it's great in its own right. The multiplayer, obviously without changing massively, has some new perks and guns but to be completely fair is a little of the same, but that in itself has allowed it to be polished to a high standard, it will NEVER be everyone's cup of tea, but then again what will all I know is it's my cup of tea and my favourite multiplayer by far! I have little sympathy for games that call them selves sequels yet do NOTHING to heighten the experience from before- are game companies not wanting to take any more risks? there is the usual abundance of titles rallying for that almighty Game of the Year, forking down 60 bucks annually for the exact game as before just seems wrong.

Me and my brother played through the campaign criticizing it the whole way through. Playing through the multiplayer I found no new innovations that really changed it up too much, and the small maps with a small amount of players annoyed me as i'm used to 64 players on massive maps that I find in my PC version of Battlefield 3. I am not a strict fanboy of Battlefield, and I should probably not judge the game by it's style of gameplay, but Jesus Christ, at least have the decency to not charge $60 for what felt like uninspired DLC that is just proof of Activision's tendency to prefer quantity over quality.Sure the experience is worth more than the $2 it cost to rent it, but not full price. Just like they say we could go the way of the dinosaurs, I feel Call of Duty will go the way of Guitar Hero. Metacritic has rejuvenated my faith in the online game review by allowing the community to rate games instead of a possibly paid off individual. On my way to purchase Skyrim I notice a fairly young child running to the MW3 shelf. This not only shows the audience this game is designed to appeal to, but also how sole "gamer" reviews are almost entirely useless in representing a product. They will berate lesser known titles for lacking innovation or copying mechanics, but when Activision sends out a re-skinned MW its "THE BEST MODERN WARFARE YET". I am not saying however that the original MW was bad, it just upsets me when companies can continue to make the same damn game and charge full price along with overpriced DLCs and Elite packages. Even after playing survival (zombie ripoff) mode it continues failing to impress. Expand

Maybe there's not much innovation, but there are definitely changes. The multiplayer is better then ever before, the story is Epic and the new survival mode is also great

A true sequel to the series, bringing it to a holistic level, should however bring the series to a closure for a different next installment. Great realization for this system, probably to its limits. Bring it on!!

This is insane. Im trading this in because ive already played this game a few years ago. Cod4, WaW, CodMW2, BO, And CoDMw3 are all the same friggin game again and again and again just with different skins but the same graphics that our completely outdated. Ove four years...the game has remained the same. I hope the devs are listening because i dont want another friggin Cod next year, iThis is insane. Look at the difference between battlefield bad company (which i didnt really like much) and battlefield 3 (which blew me away and converted me from Cod) i can fly a jet in that game, i can spawn at my base and not have to worry about enemies spawning behind me. I will only by another Cod if the evolve it, caus right now the only smart ppl who play Cod are playing Cod4. Expand

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
