But what is it? I do not fool me again again! Every year, take a game and the only thing they change is the subtitle, nothing but care about money. But who cares about the users? right?

The term "milking a franchise" is thrown around for series like Assassin's Creed and Guitar Hero, but why not for Call of Duty? This is a series that clearly gets milked the crap out of. This game gets a 0/10 to adjust for the inflated hype it received (which anyone with a brain could see lacked substance). What's changed this time? Not much. This is a series that clearly gets milked the crap out of. This game gets a 0/10 to adjust for the inflated hype it received (which anyone with a brain could see lacked substance). What's changed this time? Not much. You've got a few new modes to multiplayer and a change in presentation. That's just about it. The singleplayer continues from the embarassing plot line from MW 2 and continues to prove that gaming devs can be some of the worst story-tellers of all time. The game runs under the same engine as every previous game, dating back to Call of Duty 2 from 2005. If you do a side-by-side comparison of Call of Duty 2 and MW 3, you will see how little progress has been made graphically 6 years later. Since the engine is still the same, the physics, AI, and everything else that goes into gameplay is still the same. This is clear laziness on the developers' parts and shows that this franchise is going nowhere fast. I own every Call of Duty except for Big Red One and MW3, and for good reason. This review contains to silly bias, as I've been a fan of the series much longer than 99% of its fans even knew the series existed, let alone played one of its installments. Take it from me, this series is dead and if you're a gamer with accelerating preferences, this is not the game for you. If you're wondering whether to purchase MW 3 or Battlefield 3, buy neither. Unless you have a high-end PC, Battlefield isn't the game for you either, as its console versions are a poor representation of the series. Unfortunately, the biggest concern with MW 3 is how it will impact the rest of the industry. Perhaps more shooters will adopt the Call of Duty model of shooters, and anyone with preferences like mine will give up on the genre all together. Expand

Perhaps I'm asking for too much from a sequel. I can handle simplification, or elimination of mechanics. I can understand trying to take something in a different direction but ultimately failing. But what Modern Warfare 3 manages to accomplish is to rehash the same game - yet again - and expect me to shell out sixty dollars for it.

For starters, they have the nerve on trying to force the single player campaign down my throat. Since Modern Warfare 2, the single player campaigns have felt like filler, being there simply because it's expected to be there. My time with the campaign was short lived, as I didn't find it particularly enjoyable by any means necessary.

Moving on, I decided to go to the bread and butter of the game: the multiplayer. I'll admit to enjoying Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2, as I did find them fun. However, my time with multiplayer in MW3 was absolutely horrid. The menus lagged, the game almost froze up on me, and when I finally entered a game, I was having terrible framerate issues. No, I did not install it on my hard drive, but such a problem to exist when it's literally one of the selling points they've been throwing out there for the past several months is unacceptable.

I've since returned my copy, and don't plan on picking this game up ever again.

Overall, I'd find some other game to play, specifically one that runs on an advertised framerate.

This is a decent looking game with good gameplay, and good finish to the modern warfare campaign, a fun, replayable co op mode and hours of fun worth of multiplayer. It introduces new gimmicks and ideas. Could have a better connection to multiplayer though.

Mw 3.0 is a massive disappointment. The level design in this game is the poorest attempt by any call of duty, survival mode is terrible and just bad in general the only good step forward are the kill streaks.. That is seriously the only good thing about it. It's not worth a 0 out of 10 on it's own but compared to what it should be then yes it deserves the 0.

This game doesn't change anything from the past 4 Call of Duty games. All it does is have a slightly new story in campaign and make one or two new multiplayer modes along with a new set of maps. Overall almost same game as MW2, same graphics engine even.

If someone is hiding in a building, you should be able to blow the wall down with a rocket or tank round, or oh wait, you already can, and it's called BATTLEFIELD. I don't know why I bothered with this game, I barely played Black Ops. No more peer pressure, my true love is and always has been Battlefield. THOSE guys know war games. They do their homework on weapon sounds and handling. When you play that game, hearing the symphony of realtime gunfire and explosions is like being smack in the middle of Black Hawk Down. But you know what, let COD exist if only to keep the kiddies and noobs out of my Battlefield so us big boys can have our fun too. If I want an arcade shooter experience, I'll stick by the pioneer, HALO. Otherwise, when I want to play a real war game, BF3 is where it's at. Let's face it, Activision is going to bleed COD dry just like they did Guitar Hero. The franchise will die of overexposure, which is a shame, because a long time ago, it was a decent game, that is, until DICE let me blow down walls in an M1 Abrams tank! Expand

MW3 maps are trash , not fun .. they all have the same feel .. everything has invisible walls .. even bushes. This game really just feels like a expansion with tweaked multiplayer. I spent alot of time on MW2 , and even WaW and BOps , however am having a very difficult time forcing myself to play it. The single player is of course sort of neat .. but mainly only because of the special wow moments of the destuction happening in the background such as the falling of the eiffel tower. None of course is really interactive. The rest of the game is just shoot and take down a swarm of unrealistic AI enemies which are set to come when your player reaches a point or until to reach a set point to make them stop and continue with the story. Then as if a 60 Dollar price tag wasnt enough .. you can purchase a 50 dollar 1 year membership to basically get the expansions when games like Battlefield will have the first expansion and its free which is releasing in December. So just for the basic version plan on dishing out 110.00 Bucks to play everything. Modern Warfare 3 is a okay game .. however you can see the difference in quality from when Infinity Ward was truley a sole company and when the leftover Infinity Ward and SledgeHammer games get toghether and put out a "sequel" Expand

When I got the game and instantly hopped onto it, I got what I expected, the same experience from all the other Call of Duty games I have come to enjoy. What I am disappointed in is the fact that this Game felt more like a content pack than a full game. I feel like I've just wasted $40 on a bit of reskinning, a couple new weapons and attachments, a recycled story concept, and some original multiplayer maps maps. While the game is fun to play, and shares the same addictivity as the other games in the series, I found that it felt dated in both the gameplay and presentation departments. There were no new additions to the multiplayer system, aside from the two types of kill streaks, and a game mode literally ripped from Halo Reach's headhunter mode. Initially I thought that the Weapons Proficiencies were a good idea, it took me about 2 minutes to realize that it was simply the MW1 and MW2 weapons systems simply retooled, tweaked and given a nice sugar glaze coat for the public. The graphics, while they are sill good, are dated. While activision manages to keep the framerate steady at XX fps (whatever it is), it appears that they sacrificed the overal model texturing and antiailiasing, instead relying upon epic moments to make up for graphics deficiencies. Overall, while I do like the game, it's lack of innovations and recycled elements detract from the "bang for your buck" value of the $60 purchase, leaving something that feels like it would have fit better in a $30 DLC or expansion pack. Dear Christ get real. Anyhoo, dear discerning readers and prospective buyers, all one has to do is simply READ the reviews. So far I haven't seen a single super-negative review that doesn't list off their points for rating this game as such. Not a single negative review I've seen even makes mention of BF. The only times BF gets mentioned is when the super fanboys (and no I don't arbitrarily consider one who simply enjoys COD to be a "fanboy" -- I'm referring to, as I mentioned earlier: the ones who put this game on a pedestal simply because of what it's called and spend more time on the internet trolling sales figures than providing valid points for what actually makes this game anything good... damn that was a long parenthetical eh?) come on here, see the negatives and make such baseless claims. Be warned people: If you are on the fence about it and haven't bought it yet, it literally is not worth the full price. I can't stress this enough. This game is, at best, a $19.99 expansion. Failing that, a 1200 microsoft point DLC pack. People ARE NOT exaggerating when they label this game as such. Of course the die hards making twenty accounts to label this game a perfect 10 are going to take offense to this.... but take a look at their responses (for a little fun in sociological study):

You're probably asking yourself, "Why is this such an insult?", and the simplest answer i can give you is that aside from "strike packages" and "survival",nothing has changed. I would put the value of this game at a expensive DLC for MW2. Despite the fact that the game has a new campaign it is incredibly short, I beat it on veteran in under 5 hours. Not to mention the fact that it is almost impossible to not see what is going to happen next, and just about every level consists of shooting hordes of enemy troops that come out of every alleyway, skylight, or some other incredibly obvious route of attack. In only a few levels are you doing anything else (I wont say what specifically but i promise you it is nothing new to this franchise). Getting back to multiplayer, the addition of strike packages is no significant feat and the incredibly unbalanced "support" strike packages destroy the experience, where it is a significant feat to get a juggernaut suit with the assault strike package, the support juggernaut suit doesn't get an M60 but instead a riot shield and USP which makes your very formidable regardless and you dont have to get every kill on a single life you can die as much as you like and on top of this objectives count towards whatever you have on this class. Lastly Spec Ops "Survival" is a very easy "copy paste" job of multiplayer maps with units spawning in waves and simply given the AI that is used in campaign which consists mainly of charge into the player and shoot. It feels like a feeble attempt to copy treyarch's success with zombies. Then your regular spec ops missions are recycled campaign maps with a few changes. Then off to the side of the game itself you have the "Elite" service which can run you just as much as the game itself, which as of now is very buggy and the lack of dedicated servers for multiplayer is simply being cheap (Don't we love it when someone rage quits from the middle of a game and he happens to be host and you lose all progress made during that match). If you're looking to buy the same thing you bought 2 years ago feel free but I implore you to not feed this shoddy remake, it simply isn't worth your time or respect. Expand

New to this version is survival where you and a friend can jump in and survive wave after wave of increasingly difficult enemies while unlocking different weapons, perks and air support. The real time in this game of course lies in the multiplayer, with over 40 weapons, 15 upgradeable perks and the new strike package layout it is the most balanced and fun experience to date that will provide months if not years of entertainment to all who WANT TO PLAY IT, when it come down to it MW3 expands on the first two titles without going to far out of the comfort zone of the developer which is totally fine in MY OPINION because the first two were fantastic experiences and i for one cant wait to beel this one dry as well Expand

The campaign, given the track record for "modern age" military shooters is passable, albeit short, but isn't likely the main reason people buy the game anyway. The multiplayer, being the core reason most people will buy the game, is very similar to MW2, and took out a lot of the things Black Ops had (credit system, the way the killstreaks work), which makes sense given the transition in developers between games. My biggest complaint regarding the maps is many of them are flat, yet have so many corners that it is almost impossible to not just spray and pray around every corner just to protect yourself. I'm assuming that means IW is taking the DLC route to address this with better maps. Still, it doesn't deserve the score it is getting from many, its a competent shooter and deserves a play through if you want some quick action in your FPS games. Expand

This game is now the most grossing game of all time. And what did you get for your time and money. Well for most of us we got what we expected. The game is VERY similar to previous renditions. The game is so similar that many of who love the series are very disappointed in the fact so much has improved over the previous releases. You can go into much debate over the positive and negative of each title released. However, much to be said is that there was always things that improved. I would say that COD4 was a breakthrough and even MW2 was revolutionary in many ways. Black Ops brought us the "Currency System" of buying your perks and weapons and for some that was huge and a great add-on. But mainly you saw improvements that have become staples. Examples:
COD4 - First "Modern" war shooter for the series and really moved the genre forward to that. Think of it this way, how many WWII shooters exist these days. World at War - Introduced us to Zombies and who would have though they would be so addicting. Modern Warfare 2 - Brought us back to the Modern shooter and added some much needed improvements to the game play (Except for Quick Scoping - which is short for "I cant aim")
Black Ops - This brought us the Wager Matches and who would have thought playing games like Gun Game, Sharpshooter, One in the Chamber and Sticks and Stones would be so much fun. They also started the ability to Split Screen online. This was huge for those with families and multiple people wanting play at the same time.
Modern Warfare 3 - Kill Confirmed and Team Defend which are nice and have their positives. I think everyone like the campers being gone in Kill Confirmed and Team Defend has its positives when playing with friends. So what else did MW3 bring us. "Survival Mode" - No wait, that is Zombies in the modern war style. "Wager Matches" - No, these came from Black Ops. "Split Screen" - No that was from Black Ops too. "Modern Shooter" - No, this is from several renditions now. So really all we got was two new game modes. Taking the same weapons and adding a few new ones with a little shuffling of the perks does not make a game. It makes an Expansion. Let's look at Multiplayer and see what we have. First of all the Balancing of Weapons is way out of wack. You should not be able to snipe someone from across the map with a LMG in 3-5 shots. That is not possible. You should not have people aiming down the sights and turning a corner and getting a head shot when you were barely spawned and they have no radar or UAV up. Can you say "Aimbot" and cheating? To see MW2 aimbots working with MW3 on release day says they didn't even think to fix them. I can't believe the developers don't surf the websites and download all of the aimbots and think to patch them so they don't work. The maps are the same scene over and over again. A city scene, a bazaar, a city scene, a warehouse, a city scene with a downed helicopter. Really? In the previous releases we have been to the jungle, a ship deck, warehouses, cities, container yards, training setups with plywood, etc. Lets have some imagination again. With the weapons so over powered, the cheats in use so early, bad map designs and bad spawn locations you get very frustrated with the game. I know, so you are doing good in the game and disagree. Well I am a better then average player. I maintain a typical 1.2 Kill/Death ratio in most releases and so far in Modern Warfare 3 I have a .5 K/D. I think there is something wrong in that. The real crazy thing is I have about a dozen friends (Online and in real life) that are similar players or much better and none of them have a K/D over .7 and are complaining about the same things. Some of them have K/D ratios above 3.0. Then take the leader boards for Accuracy in MW3, and explain to me how the first 250+ people have a 100% accuracy. How is that possible? There is nobody that good and they should all be checked for cheating. Since Elite records all games it should be easy to watch the game and see they cheated. Really 30-0 in a TDM game. Is that possible without a hack? Most will say it is not.

Now you have the developers going on Twitter and asking "Fans" to come to Metacritic and "Boost" the user score. Really? If your product is good you will get a good score. Even if it starts out negative, as those who play it see its good they will balance out the score on their own. But if you have to ask your fan base to boost the score, you know you did something wrong. In my humble opinion, Activision screwed up in letting the two original IW developers go and they got a second rate person to handle the MW3 development team and such they got a second rate product. For me the release was something I looked forward too.

Someone obviously loved using the copy/paste tool because there were hundreds of models littered around the map making the flow of the multiplayer very difficult. Even for a person with a keen eye, it's difficult to keep an eye out when you have obstacles every other few cm in your way. The levels were really frustrating as a result of this.

Stealthing is very hard. I'm not a camper but the UAV's coming in every second and heavy footsteps even when crouching made it very hard to approach an enemy comfortably nested in the corner. Because levelling up takes a long time, you don't get to unlock anything of any benefit until at least around level 40, which is probably about 12-15 hours of game play!

Until then, you're a deer in the middle of a stampede, you're Simba in The Lion King (you know the sad scene where he is almost trampled). You're fubarred.

I understand it is a different developer from Black Ops, but gee, they could have at least taken some good ideas. The matchmaking for one, the fact it doesn't constantly spawn you RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE ENEMY and then spawn them RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU at critical moments! I think I waited about 15 seconds a time to spawn and instantly be killed for about 6 or 7 times in capture the flag at one point!

Oh, they didn't include locale match making too. It was great when I could play against people with connections closer by, when lag was less frequent and you could see enemies before they saw you. I'm in the UK and I'm guessing mostly Americans play this, which is great for them but not for us Europeans who have to send data to the states and back!

What's with the support packages as well? Do we really need a UAV called in every few seconds?

The main problem is with the multiplayer match making, it sucks and it is too difficult to find 'free for all' or capture the flag' matches. However, I did not buy this game. I bought battlefield 3, and I borrowed this from a friend. The first thing I did was play the campaign, as I always do. Being a veteran of past call of dutys, I fell right into it and had a great time, the graphics haven't changed much in terms of cell shading and textures, but there is much more scale and the amount of onscreen action almost rivaled killzone 3, and it runs at a nice framerate like all cods and the gunplay is still good. The campaign is simply non-stop adrenaline, and the devs did a nice job of finishing the story. The spec ops missions are a blast. Play them with a friend is the best way to go and the survival mode is simply brilliant. Giving money to your alley, calling in AI allies, and dropping airstrikes, was, in my opinion, a better experience than nazi zombies. In all, it doesn't make that many advances for the genre, but I believe that it is a worthy sequel and that infinity ward and sledgehammer games have a bright future ahead of them. I don't know about the multiplayer, as my live membership is gone and I play on psn, but I would stick to battlefield or killzone or whatever you favor for your online warfare. Expand

Infinity Ward's take on the Zombies mode featured in Treyarch games. It's actually pretty fun. Other than that, this game isn't worth buying new. Get this game pre-owned or just rent it. Call of Duty 2 = Fantastic. Call of Duty 3 = Alright. Call of Duty 4 = Revolutionary. Call of Duty WaW: Brilliant. Call of Duty: MW2: Pretty good. Call of Duty Black Ops = Ok. Call of Duty MW3 = Not very good. The Franchise as a whole has begun to start taking steps back. Why rely on the same old formula year after year? Terrible campaign, enemies infinitely respawn, and run past your AI partners just to kill you. The spec ops mode is uninspired and dull, and the maps for online multiplayer might as well have been a download map pack. Definitely not worth 60 dolars and its getting old really fast releasing a game year after year, running on the same graphic engine and not changing any of the gameplay mechanics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Modern Warfare 3 is claimed to be the "Most anticipated game in history", as i recall from the launch trailer, yet, for some this may be true, but for others, it is not. The single player campaign has always felt engaging like the multi-player but with more control, like difficulty and pausing. The story is both a triumphant and tragic tale of where everything is lost, all to defeat a single man, and feels like a powerful conclusion to the story of Price and Co. The multi-player, however feels neither powerful, nor triumphant when victory is achieved, and the progression in multi-player feels unusually fast paced, and undermines many unlocks gained (apart from Gold camouflage of course, ha ha). The multi-player, however IS a great step-up from Modern Warfare 2's formulae of multi-player, promoting more "Gun-on-Gun action", for example. And whilst this is true, the sky seems just as saturated with point-streaks as any other CoD, making some Perk choices such as Blind Eye a must for an Anti-air class needed to prevent most targets from mowing down the team, or just your self in the the case of free-for-all. The strike packages are a great addition, but feel a bit too rewarding for some tasks, such as the support class granting an EMP after 18 point-streak, which may seem like a lot, but for the player with an overpowered class, the reward is always within reach. Overall, the multi-player feels like some changes are needed and some things simply removed. Some maps, for example, feel too small, and some feel too easy to exploit. While the multi-player is not the best, it still provides many hours of game-play, especially with friends, which, feels like the best group to play on-line with. The single player, while epic in its scenes and story, felt marginally brief for a first time play-through to simply absorb the story. The Spec-Ops, by the way is just as great as its predecessor and the survival is a neat addition, as well as the levelling system, making progress more worth the time.

Overall, as a package, MW3 delivers to most, but not all. The Campaign is for a great story of a roller-coaster ride, Spec-ops for the dynamic duos of buddies who enjoy working together (or alone if desired) and the multi player is, as usual, the instant jump-in action station people hunger for.

While that's good for the hardcore CoD fans, it's disappointing to the rest, that such a "cheap" game still turns out to be one of the most successful games of this year...of course many sales are accounted to the good name and reputation of "Call of Duty" and more soever "Modern Warfare" and "Infinity Ward". I say Activision has to step up it's game and stop with the annual cheap CoD sequels and make something worth our money. If I were a gamer, not sure whether to buy MW3 I'd go and buy MW1, which is cheaper, had it's original creators working on it and has less problems than MW3.

To that I say: There's always room for improvement, no game's perfect.

I like the fact that your weapons level up separately from you character, so you don't have to tie up a perk slot to have multiple attachments. I find surpressors a MUST in COD...and the fact that I can add range to my surpressed UMP45 is a HUGE perk in my mind. This game to me has only become good when playing with a group of friends. It's sickening to see someone coming around a corner, aim down your sights and shoot them only to be killed by them, then when watching the kill cam it shows that apparantly they got a 5 shot head start on you. Or being shot at, running behind a wall, only to die from delayed and horrible hit detection. In MW I feel as if I should always bring a knife to a gun battle, it's ridiculous attempting to kill someone who is even remotely close to you, cuz all you'll see is a quick movement and then... death... a knife kill from 5 feet away... ask somebody in the military, if you're 5 feet away from someone, in order to "knife" them you'd have to lunge at them... unrealistic knifing. If you want to knife someone in MW then they need to add a struggle system, make people work to get knife kills just like we have to do with guns. How about this sweet flaw that has yet to be fixed: I die... I spawn and take 7 steps before being killed from behind... How about setting up designated spawn areas for both teams with NO spawn camping, hell if u need to, add turrets near each spawn that kill any enemy trying to camp around them, point is, get rid of spawn camping and get rid of enemies spawning behind us for easy kills! This game is frustrating on so many levels. I am in no way an elite player, but I consider myself a really good player, however, if you play with random people who know all the camping spots and know the hit detection and auto-aim really well, you will literally be destroyed and made to look like an amateur. Battlefield 3 is my game of choice between the two. I can play Battlefield with friends and myself, but MW3 is a game I only group up with friends for, that way, when I start getting pissed, somebody can crack a joke and keep the mood fun. So my suggestion, if you havent given BF3 a chance, go out and do so. The aiming is better, the maps are better, and skill truly shows in that game. In BF3 my KD is a 2.7 and I run and gun, in MW3 I am a 1.37. Expand

After a disappointment in world at war I bought modern warfare 2 in high hopes that it would be a worthy sequel, which it kind of was...it added many features tightened the multiplayer and continued the story. I was willing to overlook the fact that it was ALMOST the same game, they were coming dangerously close to over saturating the series. Inevitably this happened a year later with black ops which was pretty much a clone of all that had been done before. After all this nonsense we hoped for a glimmer, modern warfare 3...a game which we all hoped would live up to the legacy. Unfortunately all modern warfare 3 really is is and exact replica of all that made up modern warfare 1 and 2. Nothing truly original was added to the experience. Activision has gotten all kinds of greedy. Forcing out games yearly at a full retail price knowing full well they are selling an unworthy product...not taking into account whether or not the consumer is getting what they paid for. The fact that the fans will buy it is apparently enough to justify tossing together some explosions and new maps and putting a new number on the end. All I ask is why? I am not a fan boy of one gaming device or the other, or one gaming series or another, just someone who doesn't understand why this is not only acceptable to you fans, but you will actually defend the games quality. Nothing is truly different about this game then the other major call of duty releases every year since 2007, nothing was stopping them from releasing small packages, more maps, more modes...nothing. Instead they put together not an inferior product, but a slap in the face. All of this has been done before. I've bought this before. You've bought this before. Before you think of buying this garbage and support these publishers who think it's ok to take advantage of loyal fans...think of what you could do to force them to make a modern warfare game that truly lives up to the standards of todays games. Was this much of a review? Not so much...not a rant either. I just want people to realize that the graphics are outdated, story still generic, game play rough, sound poor, and multiplayer virtually unchanged not because they can't but because they wont. Take a stand. Play your last call of duty if you have to a little longer until they see they can't treat people like dirt anymore. If you read this far I hope you see where I'm coming from and live up to my hopes that we will one day see a modern warfare 4 WORTH praising, not this thrown together mess, thank you. Expand

I feel the graphics are beautiful but of course they can always get better. People need to understand that writing a graphics engine is no cake walk. People cry about the graphics, why not assist them in making a new engine? It usually takes years of development. I'm rather certain they are not slouching here and we should see something new in 2012. So everyone QQ shadap. Be happy the franchise exists otherwise you would have never had the same pleasure and joy of any COD. Expand

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
