Same game slightly different scenery, even more mmo-wanna-be added. This game still cant make up its mind, is it a tactical game? Is it sun and gun? Is it an mmo? In another effort to be everything to everyone it ends up being mediocre at best. There are no tactics, little to no team play, constant un-preventable back dooring, pandering to the lowest common denominator of gamers.

I haven't played the single player yet, but multi-player is as fun as ever, sure it's just like the other CoD games but that's to be expected. There's a few issues with lag, the lag compensation in the game feels like it punishes players for having a solid connection. But all FPSs have lag issues, and at least MW3 is still playable (unlike some other recent FPS launch). Unfortunately the multiplayer experience is destroyed due to the horrible lag created by the lag compensation. After about 15 hours played online it is obvious that the game artificially introduces lag (sometimes up to .5-1 second) to "even" the playing field with those who do not have good connections. This typically results in many wtf moments when engaging into 1v1 gun battles (which the developers repeatedly said would be the focus of the game) where you see the person first and start shooting first but you appear to die from 1 bullet from the other player. Watching the kill cam shows a different story. The other player sees you first and starts emptying most of their magazine into you, clearly more then the 1 bullet that was shown earlier. Multiplayer is unplayable with these problems. These issues were in other CoDs however I have never experienced it as bad as now. If you want to run 'n gun look elsewhere.

The maps are terrible. Tight corridors with numerous corners and overlooking windows lead to excessive camping. All the clutter in the environment is too easily abused for cover where what looks like the tip of someones head above an object is shown to be the barrell of their gun in the kill cam after they kill you. Additionally the spawns are terrible. Enemies spawn on top of you, in you, to the side of you, etc. The same happens when you spawn. It is not uncommon to spawn and take a couple steps and get killed. There is no logic to the spawn locations which seem to be random in nature. The developers stated numerous times that they wanted a fast paced game. If by fast paced they meant chaotic and illogical they succeeded.

Gun damage is inconsistent, likely due to the terrible network compensation. One kill may take 3 bullets the next may take 6. Assault rifles are by far the best weapons in the game dominating the close, mid, and long range. A majority of the iron sights are ridiculus. For example the G36C iron sight covers up nearly 1/3 of the screen while ADS forcing the use of red dot sights. Perk selection has changed little since Modern Warfare 2.

The only gameplay improvements I can see over Modern Warfare 2 are less power and prevailent noob tubes and air support has been toned down slightly.

Single player experience is average. Your "buddies" are dumber then ever just standing around waiting for you to do all the work generally ignoring enemies that are right next to them. I watched many of the developer videos on YouTube and the IGN exclusives. It is clear that many of the pstatements made (gun vs. gun, 3-5 hot spots per map, better spawns, etc.) were not true. I spent $100 on the Hardend Edition and it was a rip off. Call of Duty Elite (included with it) doesn't work reliably and offers less features then what was included with Black Ops combat record! To make it worse, Elite isn't even integrated into the game! You have to exist Modern Warfare 3 to view the more "detailed" stats.

So yea, lots of complaints. Very dissappointed.

For those who are browsing these reviews looking at all the negatives, I advise you to ignore them. They're either trolls or people who get kicks out of venting their anger. Either way, no game deserves a 0 unless it is completely broken or unplayable from the start, which it surely isn't. With that being said, if you're thinking about getting this game, ask yourself: "do I enjoy Call of Duty multiplayer?" If the answer is yes, then you will enjoy this game. It's as simple as that. The multiplayer does have new features; they're not mindblowing, but they are there. There are new maps, weapons, perks, killstreaks, etc. Call it Modern Warfare 2.5, an expansion pack, or a clone if you wish. The fact is, the multiplayer experience was already a good system, which they improved upon. It's more accessible to new players while still retaining its appeal to hardcore players. the ONLY--and I do mean only--complaint I have of the game is concerning the maps. Most of them are small, filled with buildings that cater to CQC players such as SMG/Shotgun users.

As the old adage goes, don't fix what ain't broken.

ITS THE SAME GAME!!.I know Mugatu will feel the same way. same graphics engine, same multilayer. I seriously don't understand how people can get so worked up over it. My little brother got this game, i walked in the room, looked at it forgetting MW3 came out and i swear to god i thought the game was MW2. Than i go on to realise that CoD elite is 4000 MP. It is honestly ridiculous. I played it for a good 3 hours and i just got sick of it. It literally frustrated me. Activision and Inifinity ward need to realise that we are sick of them milking the game and we are sick of paying $150 each year for the same game. And its the CoD fanboys which allow them to do this, who just pay anything for the game. Dont get me wrong, MW1 was fantastic, and so was MW2 ,but that was because they were both relatively new and were therefore were fresh and exciting. Next year i wont be surprised if its $200, and you have to pay in order to pay for the map packs.I just cant wait for Activision to fall. And on that day, on that day. Jesus will come down to us, and forgive us of our sins for playing these forsaken games. and he will come down in the form of Halo 4.We we will be rectified and reconciled. Instead of another CoD game with a new variation on zombies or survival or whatever. In my honest opinion if you want to play another first person shooter this summer, i think bf3 is the way to go, or even reach with its new upcoming map packs, beleive me if you are not a CoD fanboy, and if you are not obsessed with CoD, dont get this game. There are much better affordable games coming out this summer also skyrim (which is absaloutley amazing) and AC: revelations.
p.s i also love the fact that Sledgehammer Games' Glen Schofield is complaining about the scores and wants his beloved fan boys to give it a high vote. Maybe people would vote high for it if it wasnt such a POS game.

It's really disappointing to see the game take a step back, it doesn't justify the £40 price tag when I have three copies of the exact same game, COD4, MW2 and Black Ops. All feel the exact same so I'm not spending my cash on this game as a long term fan of the series playing 70 days+ on the previous three games except WAW which was also disappointing.

The same goes for CoD fanboys that played their first few games, died a lot, and felt the need to displace their rage on here. You all need to grow up, drop your laughably pitiful elitist attitudes, and stop trying to compare two shooters that are virtually incomparable.

Now, with all that out of the way, this game honestly deserves the critic rating it got. The way that sledgehammer changed the way you get unlocks for guns, and the addition of gun perks for guns is truly one of the things that makes this game shine. I loved the unlocking aspect of MW2, i would grind through all the unlocks for guns in MW2 because it was fun, and rewarding. MW3 just amplified this aspect, and it makes the game extremely rewarding, and gives it an extremely high replay value through all the prestiges. As for the gameplay, it feels almost identically to modern warfare 2 in the character movement aspect, and as for the guns, it feels familiar, but not the exact same. Guns now have more recoil than MW2 had in all aspects, even if you put kick on any gun, there is still no gun that could be considered anything near a MW2 ACR laserbeam. The maps of the game are smaller, which makes for some insane action. Granted, there are some more gameplay styles that can be used for larger maps, but the smaller maps almost turn this game into a full on twitch shooter, with extreme fast paced action and frantic spawn switching. The spawns in the game right now are a little on the crazy side, but does anyone remember the insane spawning problems black ops had on release? Who says sledgehammer won't fix this like Treyarch did? C'mon people, the game hasn't been out for a week yet and you've yet to see how supportive Sledgehammer is going to be. I'm sure they're going to add in tweaks, and they'll only make the game more refined, and more enjoyable.

All in all, the game has great composure, and sure, there's some stuff to work on. But there's no extremely pressing imbalance issues or anything. The game is still all-round fun, fast, and rewarding, just like a Call of Duty game should be.

Chaos, pace, hectic crazy gameplay. Exactly how shooters used to be before this tactical rubbish. Brilliant game. Obviously it offers the extreme other end of the spectrum to Battlefield 3. It needs some different maps thats for sure and some minor balance issues sorting but its good as it is.

ahh why critics why did you give this game so much positive feed back the only things they did was add a map pack in the multiplayer added some tweaks to guns and killstreaks. The story line yes the game is good for the story line is good and have some memorable moments but overall its just the same game as modern warfare 2. Over all the game is a meh for me.

It's frankly sickening that developers are able to get away with this pathetic practice. There's nothing else to say - the blind sheep will buy it, and the ones with any sense of free will or dignity will put their foot down for once. The gaming industry needs to understand that this is simply not ok.

Okay, so this is my first time posting on this site and my first time ever really criticizing the call of duty franchise. To be honest, I was really hoping for something awesome here. I gave the last game they sold a pass because I thought they were just going to make up for it on this one. here's the thing, this game is exactly like the last three games I have played. So much so that it takes away from the fun and originality that could have been possible with any amount of risk taking or changes in the game. The fast-pace arcade style game just got even more fast paced, and now feels almost like a cartoon. I mean sure, when your standing still the graphics are pretty amazing, but who stands still in this game? Who even has the skills to stand still in this game? People stop caring about graphics when they are trying to rack up as many kills as possible in a constantly moving dead space. I gave it a try I really did. Maybe I'm growing old (being a huge fan of the ww2 based call of duty 3). I've seen it through the last 7 years, I've watched the COD game creators turn from genius and uninhibited fun makers, to plain Janes - who milk cows dry (for the simple fact they can).

Please, Please, Please change it up and create some kind of monument that amazes the world! Not just another paved road.

What does it bring? The exact same gameplay. A hokey, Michael Bay-esque campaign that I beat in less than seven hours. An aging engine. Zero innovation. It is sad that people buy these people waste their money every year on what basically amount to expansion packs. Save your cash. Buy something like Skyward Sword, Skyrim, or Batman: Arkham City if you must buy a video game. If you must play Call of Duty, just play an older one. You're not missing anything here. Yes, this has slick voice acting and likeable characters, but in terms of gameplay, it's the same game I've bought twice before.

Maybe MW2 and MW3 should have been campaign expansion/map packs for MW1! That would have been superb. Say $20 for that as downloadable content, instead of $50 as retail, where a staggering 30% goes to the shop, and a further 15% on distribution/manufacturing anyway!

Saying a game sucks because it resembles the older version is idiotic. If something's not broken don't fix. And don't even get me started on graphics, graphics don't make a game GOOD. they also don't make a game BAD. They make a game LOOK good/bad, they don't cause the overall game to become exceptional. Look back at those 8-bit games, those were pretty fun, and are still fun. Look atSaying a game sucks because it resembles the older version is idiotic. If something's not broken don't fix. Look back at those 8-bit games, those were pretty fun, and are still fun. Look at pac-man, not very good graphics, quite linear but very fun and addicting. The Modern Warfare engine has been working fine previously, so for them to change not only will it cause unexpected glitches, and problems(suddenly changing things never ends well...need I remind you the javelin glitch, and care pack glitches in Modern Warfare 2?) The only problems I have with this game so far(playing over 100 games I think I can give an accurate review) would have to be spawn points, theatre mode, sniping, shottys, scavenger, the Osprey gunner/Escort drop, advanced UAV. First off the spawn points need some massive fixing. The spawn points are just horrendous. I died by a guy, and spawned into his crosshairs. I also killed a guy only for him to appear behind me. That's just ridiculous. Secondly theatre mode needs tweaking, a lot of tweaking to be exact. Here are some problems I've experienced, and heard of. 1. When you record and open a laptop it records the laptop, not the kill streak used. 2. Clips get cut off if they go on for too long, there was a private game I was doing testing various things and it cut off at 27 minutes. Mind you I was testing a lot of things using the drop zone game type. 3. When you're recording and you pause it at a certain point and begin recording again, when you playback it pauses after when you actually paused it. 4. It would be cool if you could see the scoreboard during theatre mode like in Black ops, it's useful when you want to do commentaries and show your score. And lastly letting us see 1st person from other peoples perspective would be nice, instead of seeing them in 3rd person. Just to see how they saw their demise. Now sniping needs to be de-buffed. In mw2 I wasn't that good in sniping, I'd go positive but I'd miss a couple times at times. In mw3 I just hit anywhere and it's instant death for that person, way to easy, and overpowered. I don't even always have to hit them, it could just skim them and they die. Now for shottys, they are really, really underpowered now. They hardly kill at close range I need to be like inches away from someone to kill them with a shotty now. I'm not saying let us kill them from across the map like the spas did in mw2. Just don't make us have to be close that we can count the hairs on his face. For Scavenger let us pick up equipment from dead enemies, even if it has to be scavenger pro, let us do it. Just picking up ammo, and having more mags is kind of useless. Equipment is needed, if we have multiple flank routes we need two claymores to cover ourselves. Have it like mw2 where you can only have two claymores set up. Don't let use resupply under barrels, just equipment. Now for the osprey gunner/Escort drop, I'm going to talk about these together since they are the same kind of killstreak basically. First Osprey gunner, for such a high amount of kills needed can you allow it deploy flares, or make it less impossible to spot? Allow it to move around, or be user controlled, make it less huge, etc. For the escort drop, don't let it be shot down make it liek the emergency airdrop in mw2 where it can't be destroyed. and make it take less time to come down and drop the packages, it shouldn't take so long that the game ends before it lands. And lastly the Advanced UAV, don't let people be undetected by it(it kind of ruins the point of using it) also don't let be able to be shot down or destroyed. For the amount of kills it needs, it should stay up it's whole duration without any complications. Other than that I'm pretty much fine with this game, and I know you can release updates to address these problems, even if it has to be gradual keep releasing updates it would be worth your while trust me. If you fix the problems a majority of the community has with this game they might respond more positively towards it and not criticize it as harshly. The problem is you hardly fully listen to the community and that's what causes each game to have a lot of the community become haters and just sit waiting for the newest COD game only to be let down again, and again. Addressing the issues people have will make that 3.1 user score become higher, towards maybe an 8.0 if not more. Also make game longer/require more kills, or at least have a different game type where games last for longer times for those who like long games. like needing 10,000 score for team deathmatch instead of only needing 7500. or you need to confirm 100 kills instead of 65 in kill confirmed. Long story short, I got the feeling of been there, done that. Even de ja' vu at times. Story won't blow your mind; however, it does do it's best to tie up loose ends in this trilogy. If you loved the previous two games, you will like this. Can be a little "samey, samey". You know, like Michael Cera's movie characters. Seen him in one movie and that is what you can expect in every single movie you will ever see him in. The multiplayer is more of the same, as well. There is an entire category of gamers that fall under the twitchy trigger finger shooter category, you show them a different game and they will want nothing to do with it. COD is all they want, and for this kind of person this game is probably a wise choice.

The campaign is fun, the multiplayer I really have lost intrest in. It seems harsh, but it's true, I poured many hours into COD4s and MW2s mutliplayers, I thought they were both great games. Black Ops got boring too fast, but that's not because it wasn't a good game, it was just the same old stuff. MW3, as a multiplayer game has lost my intrest, to be fair the entire COD franchise as a multiplayer series has lost my intrest since I started playing BC2.

MW 2.5. This was not worth $60, rather, it felt like a DLC. I feel as though I wasted my money when I could have simply stuck with the older Modern Warfares, which were the EXACT. SAME. Small variances do not justify a new 60 dollar price tag.

It's sad really. This game is total trash and rehash and I don't think I've seen such a hyped game that was this bad. MW3 really sucks and you really should stay away from it. Boring maps, rehashed guns and a load of whiny 10 year olds asking their mom to make them food. What's even sadder is how IF and Activision have been reacting to reviews like these. â

The biggest problem with Modern Warfare 3 is that lots of great changes have been made but none of them are apparent to the consumer. All they see is that the graphics are comparable and the game-play is extremely familiar. These are two very true comments and because they are all that is perceived they tend to overshadow the changes that have been made. Single Player: In true "Michael Bay" form, the campaign is a strand of epic set pieces designed to make your eyes and ears say "What the !@#$." This is getting harder to do since we've been exposed to the same style of presentation for at least two Modern Warfare's before this one. What really resonated with me is that this game ties all the events of previous two games into a coherent and surprisingly good story. The flashbacks and explanation of events happening outside of the players awareness in previous titles was awesome and it made me want to play the other two titles again.

Spec Ops: The tried and true co-op formula is exactly the same as it was in Modern Warfare 2 except for one major detail which is the addition of Survival. Survival is just plain awesome. I love that the waves of enemies are infinite. I love that we can level up and use all the things that make traditional multi-player awesome like perks, attachments, kill streaks, etc. Survival is also a useful learning tool for players to get used to weapons and other errata of the game without the pressure of performing well against the online masses where stats are tracked and permanent. These two aspects dictate the entire feel and pace of the multi-player games and it's unfortunate because it renders so much in the game useless. Sniper rifles are really just there for show for instance. Multi-player: It's always hard to judge this segment because frankly it takes a long time to figure out the tools and the maps in order to use them efficiently. However, there's two things that I've notice that in my opinion act as the stem for virtually all the problems in the multi-player. First, the maps are significantly smaller than other iterations in the series. I can't tell you how many times I was surprised at how close Domination flags were to each other or how quickly an enemy was already bearing down on me at the beginning of a round. Secondly, even on the larger maps the amount of collusive objects create short lines of sight and make the maps feel and act small. These factors create maps that are chaotic and relentless. Spawn killing is much easier, tactics are less viable, and a lot of the tools and perks are useless because they can't be reliably used in an environment where your lifespan is mere seconds upon spawning. The good things that have changed are aspects that a lot of players probably won't pick up on. A good example is how corners are handled. Many of the corners aren't flat walls with a definitive edge but rather a stack of objects that create an uneven edge. This means players have to gauge their line of sight based on their height in relation to the object and also where the enemy may be coming from. It gives the person approaching the corner a small field of vision on someone who may be sitting around that corner thus making camping a little bit harder. Some corners are completely see-through like glass windows or brush. These provide a murky field of vision on a corner but still leave you vulnerable to damage. These create great risk vs. reward scenarios that the players have to consider each time they approach a corner and I love them.

Summary: I miss Modern Warfare 1. That's it, what else can I say really? This game is an obvious and predictable evolution of the first Modern Warfare and I feel really underwhelmed playing it. In fact, I must have sat at the menu for 30 minutes wondering why I couldn't convince myself to play multi-player. Instead, I ended up playing Spec Ops all night and I loved it. I guess in contrast to all this I just miss the simplicity and near perfect balance of Modern Warfare 1. Where maps were diverse and sniper rifles were useful. Where gun-play was king and air traffic didn't completely drown out any other sound in the game. And I know this is in high contrast to popular map design but I really miss choke points. Modern Warfare 3 is a great game with liquid smooth game-play and a deep and interesting progression system but in the end, it still isn't enough to make me sell Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

If Spec Ops wasn't to your liking, well you're a **** moron. And if it's single player, well grow up and buy a real game. This was a multiplayer purchase first and foremost. If you didn't realize that when you bought it, I really do feel bad for you.
    b) The little tweeks that make CoD come out year after year, the reason they keep making as much money as they do is because the fanbase is there. Hell for a radically different example, look at Halo. Halo has not **** changed at all over the 10 years it's been out. Shield, healthbar, death. And hell, they're upgrading the pistol to its original form here soon! They're reverting back to the old ways and that particular fanbase is PAYING to play that!? Seriously though, CoD comes out with a different game every year. If you're expecting big, radical changes, you're into the wrong game series.
    c) As someone who took a year off after MW2 came out because I hate **** Treyarch and because 3 months after MW2 came out the Tac Nuke was being overused in my typical gametype, Hardcore TD, I **** love this game. This game took what was good from MW2, mashed it with what originally worked in MW1, and put it in a nice little bow where they improved upon the hit boxes online as well as the 60FPS frame rate.

To all you who are mass producing the 0 grade, you're review should be thrown out because it serves no purpose but to bastardize a great game. Wanna make a statement next time a CoD game comes out? DON'T **** BUY IT AND STAY OFF THE **** SERVERS.

A lot of people have thought this is just some piece of crap game that doesn't deserve to looked at bought and should only be made fun of. To those who think this is true you are all wrong. Is this a sequel, yes, but is it a crappy game, no. While people complain about no innovation I'm sure that if there was a big change people would be mad. But let's get down to the real business, is this game even worth $60 and many hours of your time, that's your choice, for now i will tell you mine. This game isn't worth $60, maybe $50, probably $40 but not $60. Even not being worth $60, it is a very well made game with good but short campaign, great co-op missions, the awesome zombies like survival, and the famous (whether it be god or bad) multi-player. In my book there are very few games that offer a truly good overall package, MW3 does this but if your only buying for one mode then save your money and buy an older call of duty that has what you are looking for. I hope this can help somebody who is a long time fan who doesn't want to feel cheated because he spent $60 on a game he already played.

I wasn't expecting a whole new experience, but there is nothing that I can point to and say "This is really cool.", or " x problem from the last games seems to be much better." The spawn system and the quick scoping, which seems to be much more reliable in this iteration, takes you out of the game and results in squashing any atmosphere. I don't see any improvements for those who actually enjoy sniping. It is still mostly geared to "run and gunners" which results in more camping than usual. The game play has lost it's novelty after this many attempts and has been reduced to points grinding sessions instead of actual fun. IW is going to need some major kick a$$ DLC.
The last thing I will comment on is the Elite product. This is wrong in so many ways. This reeks of a project that was hijacked and perverted by nothing but greed. Will I still play this game? Yes. But it will be a lot easier to break for other games .

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
