I had been looking forward to this for some time and couldnt wait to really get into it. It is indeed just like the last one. The minor changes do not warrant a new release and a $100 ad campaign. I think my expectations were too high, but I really feel let down. I was not a fan of Battlefield 3 either, but at least they have taken steps to move forward. I hope Activision takes note of what the fans have said and put something new on offer next time around. If they want to keep the old- then by all means just release more map packs and content. But there is nothing to differentiate this from the last. Poor effort! Expand

It doesn't take the most powerful game producer in the world to repackage the same old game, all it takes is the will of blind console gamers. It is a marvel that this game generated 1.1 billion, or rather is expected to. I am a fan of both franchises but I have to say Battlefield has won this round. On another note, I find it very pathetic and outright embarrassing to be asking us gamers to post better user reviews and scores on metacritic. We are the fans and we support these works of art that you give us but when we find that we have been let down by you then and even though it may be a tough pill to swallow you must gulp down the criticism because we the consumers have definitely taken the loss of our hard earned cash like champions. I grew up in the 80's and I used to love Police Academy movies, then they released Police Academy 4 - Citizens on Patrol, which tried a bit too hard, but was still entertaining. As a stand alone product, it would have probably been taken much better, but us fans were hoping for a lot more. After that, there was absolutely no point to those movies, except to make money.

BLOPS was a lot like police academy 4 - the start of on the fence, derivative, 'lets do this for the money' kind of stuff. Even if the COD series hadn't been to vietnam before, others had (many years before) and they'd done it better. And now we have MW3. Which, is entertaining for sure. A solid COD game. And its always nice to get new maps for multipalyer. And if MW3 had only been the 5th game in the series and the year had been 2009, then I'm sure it would have been considered one of the greatest FPS's of all time. But its not. Its been 2 years since MW2 and we the same thing with slightly different environments and new singleplayer. Imagine if Apple re-released the i-phone 3 in 2011 with 2 new case colours...

I've got enough COD games in my closet andd on't get me wrong, I love dusting them off occasionally, but this game is the 7th in the series and it brings nothing. In my opinion, its time for the series to die.

I question when people say "its the same game as the previous two.... the graphics are the same" but this is nearly always the case in most games out today. Look at the Elder Scrolls Skyrim, a great game but hardly any great graphical improvements but yet everyone is raving about it (to me it looks no different to Oblivion). The same can be said about the Mario games. Yes the story may change slightly but the bad guys are the same, the graphics are generally the same but that doesn't make it bad does it?
All i can say Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer games, thank you for making a fun filled singleplayer and fantastic Multiplayer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hi I have read a lot of damaging reviews on this game and a lot seem written by anti cod gamers, and fanboys of other games, (not mentioning names)

Firstly, The graphics are great, sure its no frosbite 2 or cry engine 3, but honestly bf3 doesn't look mindblowing on console, I own it for xb360 and pc, and its worthy of all titles on pc, on xbox howerver still a great game but nowhere near polished as pc,
Back to cod, the engine may be old, but it works, 1080p 60fps and looks and moves great, better than other games in the fps genre on xbox,
The story is among the best out there with Michael bay levels of cinematic action, sure its a little on rails and sure enemies spawn like mad, but still entertaining and fun, not as long as I'd of hoped for but good noneless with some amazing scenes like the airplane level, sheer brilliance.

Spec ops play is cod's answer to horde mode, adding another layer of depth to an exiting mode from mw2 so another plus, But the multiplayer is where it is shining, quickscoping makes a frustrating return, some dissconnection issues but infrequent enough to pose a problem, sure the kids who ruin cod are back with rapid fire controllers jump drop shot mods, and I'm sure iv seen one hacked player on launch night with 8th prestige at 00:15 from the UK! But as in black ops we have the means to report players for these things and vid capture is the evidence needed, I'm sure after 1 or 2 updates this game will be perfect, its amazing as it is now, I like the smooth but fast pace to the game, guns feel dangerous, and killstreaks are now availible in different guises thanks to strike packages such as support mode, never again will a camper ruin your stealth bomber! Because all actions from assists and captures count and roll over to your support streaks! New modes like kill confirmed add some fresh fun to the stacked playlist as well as all your favourite hardcore varients, It would have been nice to see the return of 3rd person modes as they allow you to appreciate the great detail and animation of the game.
Levelling up is not a chore no more, your weapons have profficencys which adds to your persistence too.

Overall its level design and fast pace lend back to the the best cod ever cod 4! But with fresh ideas better graphics its a massive improvement from Cods of late, Don't get me wrong I loved black ops, loved WaW until hackers ruined it, I loved mw2 but my favourite was still cod 4! Now obvious comparisons to battlefield are ineviteable but pointless, they are 2 different games, they look feel and play different but are equally as good in my opinion but for different reasons, Realistically this has more to keep you playing than bf3 due to spec ops and a addictive levelling system

My only downpoints are Quickscoping! Get rid of it or make a specific game mode for it!
I'd like to see what is possible from activision sledgehammer etc with a new engine, as good as this is, it will begin to fall behind! Get elite fixed as I purchased the hardened ed!

That aside, the main reason that this game got a 5 is the story mode. if the online play was better, i would have no issues giving this game a higher rating; the fact is that the online is unacceptable. the re-spawn algorithm/coding is quite possibly the worst that i have ever seen, in any FPS. the graphics are poor, the game engine is recycled, and the audio is garbage. I have enjoyed CoD since the beginning, but this game feels stale. The movement animations are still fluid and crisp, but the entire game platform is simply a rinse and repeat. This series peaked at the original modern warfare and has been slowly declining since. the campaign has the feel of last-nights-leftovers, but in this day and age, originality and creativity are gone. As for the online play, there is always a xbox error, host migration, glitch, etc, that is hindering the online. if you want a better campaign, buy this. if you want better online. buy battlefield. Massively disappointed with this game. To get straight to the point, I picked the game up on tuesday, and I am trading it in at Game today for Skyrim.

Although some of the features of the previous game have been "tweaked", I find that the overall multiplayer experience is nowhere near as good as black ops. The gameplay is still quite borked, and every map is the same "run and gun"

I heard about the incredibly unbalanced user score that MW3 has received on Metacritic from IGN, and decided to create a Metacritic account just to give an unbiased and objective review and score. And to help even out this Very low score for an obviously above average game, I mean sure MW3 is not perfect but 3.1 out of ten is bull***t. First off I would like to state that I am not a COD Fan Boy and not a little kid, I'm a hardcore gamer that has been playing games since the early nineties. I play all manner of games on PC and PS3 and have also bought MW3's main competitor BF3. I have played about 30 hours on BF3's Multiplayer and have a 3.30 Kill/Death Ratio so am no noob when it comes to FPS. Even so I was disappointed with the overall products of both Battlefied 3 (which got boring faster than expected) and MW3. In the end I scored MW3 8 out of 10. It is very similar to MW2 but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Singleplayer was OK, similar to the last two Modern Warfare's (overall uneventfull and boring with only some good bits) Spec Ops Missions are fun and exciting, especially if you have a friend to play them with and Spec Ops New Survival Mode is great addictive fun and a good addition to the series, I would say, and this is just my opinion that this is better than Zombies (playing with a mic is essential). Than you have Multiplayer which love it or hate it is pretty much the same as MW2 but with Strike Pakages, different killstreaks and different variations on old perks, some new guns and some new maps and game modes. Noob tubing, Nuke Killstreak and One Man Army Perk are gone but Quikscoping and Drop Shoting are still the order of the day. Also Spawn Deaths, Hit Detaction and Lag Issues can become a bit annoying. But with a half Decent Connection, a bit of skill and a touch of class you should be able to overcome these shotcomings to have one of the sweetest FPS Online Gaming experiences you can have at this time. I won't lie somtimes the multiplayer can have you screaming at the TV about the injustice of the last 5 Cheap deaths that made no sense whatsoever. But with a bit of patience even without the Elite Functions you get to know the layout of the maps, the spawn points, choke points, best class layouts for specific situations and maps. You will receive better weapons and figure out which strike package work best for you, and then your experience will start getting better. And to everyone saying COD is unbalanced that's BS, because there is a strategy and counter for everything your adversaries can throw at you. So after everything is said and done what it really comes down to is skill (and who has more of it). Overall, taken all the features packed into this one game and the weeks and possibly months of enjoyment that can be had, it's impossible for me to see how this game can receive a score below an 8 let alone a 5. If your a fan of FPS or games in general this a great addition to your game collection. Definately not MW2 DLC, and for only $50 to $100 are you that poor/cheap to complain about purchasing a great game and depriving yourself of fun just because a bunch of pathetic PC BF3 Fanboy Sheep/Followers decided to flood this site with negative reviews. It's Up To You. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not the same Call of Duty that I came know and love. Multiplayer maps are all about close quarters now which a real shame (remember overgrown?). Singleplayer is absolute trash. The game just feels too fast as well. I understand that the game is suppose to be all out war, but my god does every mission have to have explosions and over the top set pieces? It's stupid how Sledgehammer thought it would be moving to kill off every single character (except Price by the end). Whats sad is that i didn't feel sad or mad even though I've been playing Soap for the past two games. MW2's Ghost and Roach death scene was at least descent. I just felt no emotional attachment here. Because every level is all about racking up bigger explosions, there doesn't seem to be a single moment of quietness or intensity like "All Gillied up" or "Shock and Awe" Call of Duty died when Activision sucked the life out of Infinity Ward where most of its development team left. I was really looking forward to wrapping this up story up, but it left me cold and disappointed..... Cod 4 was like Black Hawk Down. MW3 is like a mindless Michael bay movie with no substance. Expand

I am enjoying this game quite a lot, the single player campaign may be a bit short but it says all it needs to,
The multiplayer is what Iv come to expect and the special ops & splitscreen modes have been improved quite nicely....To all those people giving 0's, grow up!!

A VERY expensive DLC... but who am I kidding. COD pioneered expensive map paks. Activision knows how to milk. They have made it an art, and in the video game industry they are A number 1.

A stale series is finally getting the criticism it deserves. F**k Activision and their plea. Give this game the low score it deserves. Hopefully this will wake them up and tell them they can't release the same game over and over again every year.

I can see where some of the criticism comes from. It does seem a lot like MW2.5 rather than MW3. I'm a little disappointed that it's pretty much a better version of the game we've already had for the past two years. Every COD game has been substantially better than the previous one. MW3 seems only SLIGHTLY better than Black Ops and MW2.

THis game isn't worth 60 bucks. They could have easily released this as an extension pack for mw2, because its the same exact engine, same gameplay, same everything except for a few new multiplayer maps. its just a very lazy attempt to cash in on 60 bucks.

The good thing that MW3 has going for it is the large array of maps. There are enough maps that you a person shouldn't get sucked into purchasing DLC over the next 12 months. I picked this one up mainly because all of my friends were. This is once again, another busy holiday season with tons of games coming out and the quest for finding that 1 or 2 that standout is the tricky part. I first went through the campaign. I was excited about it because MW2's IMO was great! it was fun, and the story did fully flesh out and complete itself, but it was predictable. The trailers showed way to much that it became easy to piece 1 & 1 together. Also, where MW had the AC-130 scene, MW2 had the boat chase and breaches, this game recycles both of those in ways that aren't very entertaining. It is like going into a Michael Bay movie and thinking that there won't be explosions. Not that it is all bad, but it seems like when the creative team at Infinity Ward left, they took the best talent for originality. Some of the levels feel recycled from previous versions of single player except they are in different parts of the world. Even that is lost. Its like they took random famous bits of architecture and threw it on a generic map. The special ops mode in this game is almost identical, just on different maps. it seems like almost every one is either blowing something up, or going after some generic leader. The survival mode adds a few new things to the mix, but instead of reinventing the wheel, all it does it change it from a wagon wheel to something with a little more shine. The multiplayer that is so well know and loved in the COD series is back and still has just as many problems as ever, just given that new car smell to try and avoid exposure to the many flaws. Quick scoping, drop shotting, strike packages (aka kill streaks) are abused even more so than all the previous installments. The community is full of underage children that like to complain and try whispering the occasional profane word to try and boost the e-ego. The hit detection is still off as I somehow missed a player that was away from the system from about 3 foot away. It shows when in a hot gunfight and a player misses your head, yet gets a headshot. It is a very annoying code error. Lastly, they still need to fix the servers to try and reduce he atrocious lag. Lag is still a veteran COD players worst enemy. Probably even worse than all the people actually playing on the map. This is a game that I strongly suggest trying before buying. It might be a game for you, but personally I think I am going back to MW2. At least the maps were better... Expand

Talk about Tony Hawking or Guitar Heroing another series. There is nothing new here that one has not played before in Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops. Sure, you get updated graphics on a tired Modern Warfare engine and a few new doodads. Yet, nothing game breaking or innovative. This series is going the way of Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero. Two great series who were milked dry by annual releases.

I love how they changed the way guns are upgraded, acogs are actually effective and useful- no 1 man army...but thats about it. The percs have all been nerfed and muddled with, some are totally pointless, some of my favorite percs have been turned into 2 percs (ghost!), some have been divided into the same catagory which breaks my balls. The spawn system is 100% broken, i dont know what they're thinking. I play free for all A LOT, but it is U N P L A Y A B L E as you spawn literally FEET from the enemy. (I mean feet, Ive literally watched people spawn in front of me within shotgun range, and ive noticed people have made a habit of spawning and planting a bouncing betty at their feet which kills the next person that spawns there) quick scoping is back and worse then ever, yAaaaaaaaaaaaay. Theres a new air burst grenade launcher that is devastating, complete with 4 round clip and abundant ammo. A lot of the guns almost always require scavenger, which is in the same slot as slight of hand, which really bothers me. And I havent scratched the surface, the 3 worst things about this game are the guns damage (you spawn and die before you know whats happening- too many one shot weapons) the maps are cluster F@&$ed and jammed together (Theres about 1000 ways into a area, which I thought I'd love but it just exasperates me getting shot from 10 different angles, there is not 1 map that resembles their classic formula, not one feels like a call of duty map) and there is debris and crap EVERYWHERE, making every inch of the maps prime hiding for campers. Everyone camps in this game, and I think its because people are intimidated to move sense you have the potential of being shot from 200 different angles. I wish I could return this game, I've never been more disappointed in a game in my life. This game is redeemable if they patch the guns, remove quick scoping, fix the spawning, and release some decent classic feeling maps. All of this is reasonable, they have nerfed guns in the past due to being over powered (like the ak74u) and fixed quick scoping, I dont get why they went the opposite direction this game. Expand

For the review. The multiplayer seems more fast paced to me because the way the maps were designed. I really like the point streak system. This is very friendly to new gamers also. The graphics seem slightly improved from Mw2 not really noticeable, but thats not that bad of a thing. I thought Mw2 graphics were fine in the first place. Look at Battlefield 3, it pushed what everything as far as they could for our consoles and although buggy it has some of the most incredible moments in console multiplayer......ever and it's less than a month old! I wish that it wasn't a double standard. If the single player is great and the multiplayer is bad a game can still get a 100/95 or 90/9. This game is great if you're 12. It's been nothing but a bunch of little kids running around no-scoping for 3 days now. The graphics are terrible and the maps are tiny mazes of hallways and corridors. The campaign is short and too over the top. I don't recommend.

So many people hating on this game. It may LOOK the same, but it FEELS completely different. IW knew they had something amazing with MW2, they just didn't execute it to it's full potential due to a few missteps. People say the graphics haven't been enhanced at all. However, if you actually take notice to things other than sharpness of picture, then you will notice an upgrade on the graphics engine. The online is the bread and butter of this series. MW3 has a phenomenal multiplayer system. By far, the most balanced of the series since cod 4. No overpowered killstreaks or air support. Explosives have been significantly reduced while not being rendered completely useless, and above all, no constant grenade launchers flying across the map. Bravo IW & Sledgehammer, I will be playing this game for many months. Don't let the negative comments from angry little kids affect you, you have made a great game. So what if the interface is similar. The maps could not be more different from MW2. This makes for a completely different FEEL. Expand

If I wanted to spend COD points on a certain upgrade I could and so on, and I felt it gave me a great sense of freedom to do as I please. MW3 does what it always does, force feeds me the same upgrades regardless of whether or not I even want them based on a level I achieve. As for the maps, not very excited about them. There are a couple that I really like, but a couple out of 16 is a big let down to me. The maps seem very small and rely solely on who can outdraw who, and even then if you have a slower connection, you still lose. I enjoy a match that has some strategy drawn in to it, and allows for teamwork, a lot of these maps do not have it, just run and shoot run and shoot etc... Expand

As long as we - the consumers - continue to consume the Call of Duty series, Activision will continue to publish them. Is it a 10? Probably not, but it's close and definitely the best of the series. I have to say up front, that I'm not a big campaign guy. The campaign might be excellent, but I don't buy these games for the single-player. My ratio of single to multi player is probably around 2:200. But that's just the problem, the multiplayer is awful. Rather than being innovative, IW decided to stick with their same upgrade system to enjoy perks and weapon addons. Say what you will about Black Ops, but it did revolutionize multiplayer "earnings" with COD cash that was useful in skipping boring sights, weapon addons, etc. so you could get right to your preferences without waiting until level 70. This game goes with the same boring method of earning your way to everything, something that just won't peak my interest after the honeymoon period.

We are still stuck with the same engine, that pretty much makes it easy for people to die yet harder to kill. I am still baffled at the fact that with such a complex dynamic database, I am still playing maps I don't want to. Why am I still playing with idiots that barely touch my level of FPS skill? Is IW really still having trouble trying to fix multiplayer? I know this isn't IW because bad matchmaking was why I quit playing Black Ops. I just cannot understand why I still have to be placed on a team with idiots. Is it really so hard to match skill level?

Spawning seems as worse as ever. Can no one figure a decent algorithm for spawning already? Are we still stuck in 2002? At least place more spawn zones. The entire map should be spawn zones so that the usual "furthest from enemies" algorithm will work better. It certainly doesn't help that your maps are like a Swiss cheese of obstacles. Imagine a maze. Now imagine all vertical lines removed. This is what these maps are playing like. I could hide behind one half wall for security, but I'm completely open from 3 other angles. What's the point?

Could someone PLEASE work with committees to get this game right. I would gladly fly out on my own dime to be apart of a committee because these things are so easy to detect and fix before you release anything. You need review and QA committees because this game is just awful when it comes to so many factors. I want the product to succeed. I want people to get back what they are paying for in quality gaming. I fear that if you keep releasing this stuff without checking in with others, you will eventually lose your franchise to a competitor. I remember when IW used to listen to its people when Bungie didn't. This is EXACTLY what happened with Halo.

The multiplayer is exactly the same as Modern warfare 2 and Black Ops. Perks, Unlockable guns, and killstreaks are all apart of the multiplayer. The only difference is that we get a new mode called survival. Survival is the only reason, in my opinion, to get this game. It is fun. The only thing is it is two player. It Would be better with more than two players.

The game gets a 7 in my opinion because the campaign is enjoyable. It, in my opinion is the best of the "trilogy". I played through on Hardened and had to play through again on Veteran. It was an awesome, cinematic, action packed campaign. Short, though.

The multiplayer is the same old stuff, though. It really is. People are within their rights to refer to it as MW2.5 when it comes to the multiplayer. It's time to take a leap in some other direction IW/Treyarch!

You'd think with all the money this franchise brings in (9.3 million first day sales) that they could throw a few dedicated servers our way. As long as someone with basic Internet (I'm looking at you DSL for 19.99/mo) can host a match, the obvious issues will never go away.

So that's it from me. The game works, the campaign is well worth the (short) time. The multiplayer might as well be any of the last few Call of Duty games.

The cinematic moments were awe inspiring, unforgettable. My jaw literally dropped when I saw the Pairs Tower fall, and everything else. The scale of MW3 is just so much larger then any other Call of Duty game yet, and it's so beautiful. Now I'm not one of those super huge COD fan boys that thinks COD is better then anything else and everything else sucks. I've always liked the Call of Duty games, but I've never been obsessed over the series. I was already excited enough for MW3, with it being all about World War 3 and continuing a story line that I was already very in too. So like I said, my expectations were blown away! Although MW3 may have nothing new to offer when it comes to gameplay, that is no reason not to love this game and everything else it has to offer. Those who are just in it for the multiplayer are coming in short handed and not even experiencing half of what MW3 really has to offer and the amazement that comes with it.

Hands down, MW3 is more then worth buying. It's a game the other game designers should really envy. The only reason the ratings are so low for most of the gamers here, is because they only play the multiplayer and are not getting MW3's full experience. (Not that the multiplayer is something anyone should be disappointed about.) Either that or the Battlefield 3 lovers. Or the COD haters all around. **** you guys. The storymode feels like a convoluted, slapped together, rushed out failure that just tries to continue the story when the whole thing will keep you interested if you have the attention span of a microorganism, which is probably equal to the average CoD fanboy. This is what you get when you spend a year to make a game. Sure, they kept it the same because it works. Look at **** Valve though. They took 6 long years AND suffered being hacked, but they gave us Half Life 2, which is only good in the eyes of true gamers whereas CoD fanboys say that it sucks because it doesn't have HD graphics or Iron Sights. Moving right along, it's visibly clear that they just took models and textures from MW1 since they have LOADS of the same building models and textures from MW1. There's little kids who make original models, maps and textures for Garry's Mod, but developers for some big name company are so frigging lazy that they have to reuse the same models from a game they did 4 **** YEARS AGO?! Well, that's all in vain when it comes down to this asstastrophe, because it's just a mindless **** Example: I start up, and 1 second after spawning, I get pegged in the **** face with a throwing knife. How is that fair? That's cheap **** right there. That's only the beginning when you have people getting frigging choppers raining in a hellstorm of bullets with no way to stop it, people camping and getting continuous kills at your team's spawn, and the most overpowered perks that people got by wasting hours and braincells playing multiplayer. Even worse, when you try to use a sniper the right way by picking a spot and hiding, waiting for a target and a good shot, you get a thousand, prepubescent kids yelling over the mic saying, "YOU HARDSCOPING CAMPER NOOB!" and get the story about how they could quickscope better than me. They even award you for dying multiple times with deathstreaks- ooh yeah. Cheap **** like the ability to Kamikaze people with C4 to the ability to see where the guy murdering you is on the map are only some of them. Why the **** are you rewarding deaths? Dying should encourage you to better yourself, not just get **** kills with explosives. I've even seen little kids who purposely get killed just to get the C4 and get a 6 person kill later on. Speaking of little kids, there's thousands of them in this game, swearing every word in the **** book at everyone. And whatever you do, don't mention ANY OTHER GAMES otherwise you'll get bombarded with rage from everyone else. I just mentioned that I spent more time playing Counter Strike than CoD and the little kids and even some adults were saying "COUNTER STRIKE IS A NOOB GAME, IT SUCKS AND IT'S OLD AND COD IS BETTER, THE GRAPHICS SUCK!". It's almost insulting that they just rage at every other game. And on the topic of CS, the wager matches, A.K.A. Gun Game, was a total rip from CS. But oh "It's an original Idea" says the ****all developer. Thanks **** now whenever gungame and CS are mentioned in the same sentence, CoD fanboys will be the first to say Cs ripped it off when it was made before CoD even existed. So that's my thought on the multiplayer. Just a bunch of ripped off, cheap **** kid infested, garbage fest game modes. The only things left are the spec ops mode and survival, which are just as ****. Spec ops is more like Spec Ass because it's the same **** thing from MW2, which was as equally overrated and overhyped. Survival is fun for about a good hour or so before you lose your interest. It's sad to think that this series went from being pretty fun to being an outright attention whoring game that blinds so many people into thinking it's the best. There's so much more out there to choose from, but instead games are bashed for looking anything like CoD. So my final verdict is that it's a poorly made game and to all of the CoD worshippers out there, I just want to say that it's the same game and that you shouldn't just jump straight to blaming BF3 for everyone's rage and that graphics and Iron sights don't make a better shooter. Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
