If you have Modern Warfare 2 don't waste your money on this game. It is the same exact game with a different campaign. There is nothing Innovative about this game it is seriously Call of Duty MW2. Stop giving the developers 60 dollars for the same game.

What a fantastic game! Forget the negativity, it deserves so much more. Fair enough it looks similar to previous games, but so what, that's the nature of this business, building on the good stuff, and making it better! The game is a dream to play with loads of great new features and modes. Absolutely brilliant!!

This is another great installment of COD, better graphics, new maps, fun new kill streak rewards and new co-op game play. There is more new here than people seem to realize. The only knock is the single player mode which has never been great for this series. Overall, the game is good fun.

I was expecting a game to entertain me my kids. I got what I paid for. The campaign is like being in a 10 to 12 hour long block buster movie. I'm not a big online player so I appreciate the survival mode where I can sharpen my skills without dieing every ten seconds.

More of the same... Those who control the release of CoD should stop selling these games for full price and should sell them as an expansion pack because that is what it is. This is not worth the $60 they ask you to pay...

There is a clear case of "fanboyism" that allows this franchise to continue to perform as well as it does and that is simply because fans of the series don't care about innovation, individualism or any other aspect of game design, they simply want to shoot loud guns and see gruesome kills. Call of Duty's publishers should be ashamed that they are clearly only interested in milking franchises for as much money as they could possible get from consumers. However the blame clearly lies in the consumers and the fact that some people are willing to lay down hard earned dollars on the counter for the same game recycled again and again. I for one am done with Call of Duty and will happily not be looking back. Expand

Granted, there are a few things that could be fixed, but I'm not sure where all these zero ratings are coming from. People keep saying it's just a mild update of MW2, but I just played MW2 last week and this one is significantly better. It's only slightly better than Black Ops -- which I didn't like as much as MW2 when it first came out, but ended up playing more than any other COD. The best part about this game is that it's smooth... if you like to move around a lot, it's easy to stay focused without everything being a blur. Also, the weapons are not bad at all-- it drives me nuts when all the weapons feel the same, but these have distinct personalities... you will instantly notice the difference between an M16 and AK47 (the COD games have always been pretty good at that though). And I'm loving the maps... the layout, the size, the atmosphere... it's mostly top notch (with just a little complaint, below). Connectivity and matchmaking have been very very good. It's a BIG improvement on MW2 and a slight improvement over Black Ops. Out of about 100 games, I only had a few that were "two-bar" connections. If you see that you have a two-bar connection, leave the lobby at the end of that match and join a different one... you will struggle.

So here's the bad: Maps have a lot of crap in them... stuff that ruins your flow and is easy to get stuck on. Also, if you run into a team that knows what it's doing and you just have strangers on your team... well, good luck. I'm not sure if it's just that there are a lot of people new to the COD series playing, but it seems like the gap between good players and new players is really really wide. In situations like that, if you like to play the objective like I do, then it's pretty much something you'll have to sacrifice in order to stay alive. On that point, checking lobby leaderboards to see teammate/opponent skill has become a guessing game. Black Ops had the points-per-minute stat which really told you how much of an effect someone would have on the game, but now it just lumps overall kills (which would be more helpful if we could see deaths at the same time) along with overall score and other useless facts. Headquarters is a bit more frustrating also... you won't get points for helping capture the headquarters (ok, well you get 10 or something), but only the first person there gets credit, which is just stupid. Even if I'm usually the first person there, my teammates need incentive to help me take it. Lastly, the guys that I usually play with are all hurting in the kill/death area, for some reason. A lot of 2+ k/d ratio guys are struggling to stay above 1 right now, which puzzles me. I'm the biggest rusher out of all of us, but my k/d has just stayed about the same. Perhaps that'll change... we'll see.

MW3 did away with any innovation that Blackops brought to the table. It seems all they did was to take MW2 and throw a stupid amount of killstreaks/perks/unlockables at it. The maps are again very disappointing, too tight and maze like. There is a reason why CoD4 is hailed as the best in the series, its simplicity created good gameplay, which neglected the need for silly features. I don't understand how hard it is to look at the maps that people like the most and create more like them. I think that this poor reiteration of an ageing CoD formula is the icing on the cake, people are fed up and want change. In my opinion, take a step back, don't rush to release a new CoD game purely for revenue as it is only going to hurt you in the long run. Instead, look at the feedback from the user base and ask them what they want done differently. Another option would be show us the changes, and get feedback, instead of just pushing it out on release day and hoping for the best.

After Modern Warfare, with the release of Modern Warfare 2, i thought - Yeah that's as far as it should go - but along came Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2. And "nothing" has changed, and by nothing i mean nothing fundamental, because that, again, would be too much of a risk.

If you played Call of Duty the last years, this episode won't give you any kicks, same old formula in the campaign, same old formula in the multiplayer, same old engine, and that's getting old.

Battlefield 3 on the other hand, even through its flaws, seems much more refreshing and appealing. It doesn't bore me, because i haven't been playing Battlefield 3 for ages. But i have been Modern Warfare 3 for years now.

Well dedicated servers are even laggier than the P2P ones and when you are prone and aiming down the sight at the same time, you can't move sideways at all. Ah well, the game was meant for people that don't aim anyways. Noobtube is the first default class available when you start the online game up for the first time. First off it's smooth. Super smooth, a 60 frames per second makes this game look crystal clear. A little sharper graphics, that are tough to spot at first, but once you see the first car explode you will know exactly what I mean. Buildings collapse when you hit them with a missile from the chopper, balconies collapse when you man the mini-gun. The water looks real, trees and grass blow as a storm approaches, and I actually stopped more than once to look around at the sky and the sunset. It was that beautiful. Bigger scale. MW was about a few guys in Russia, MW2 was about defending the eastern states in the U.S. MW3 is about the entire world under attack. And you feel it. Cool set pieces for firefights that are multi-level transitional. Not just where you've got guys on the second story (and stay there) and guys down low (and stay there) you've got people running up and down stairs using the environment. One time i saw an enemy running towards me, and I was thinking "what an idiot this dude's gonna get shot in the face, stupid A.I.," only to see him actually running up to a car, he opens the car door, and hides behind it! I was blown away.
A beef i had with Black Ops was that sometimes it felt like a shooting gallery. You would walk forward it would "trigger" the enemy spawn, they line up in a row, and you kill 'em, and move on. But here i felt like there are people everywhere and all the time! And there's always this rushed feeling of progression, where if you try to camp and kill everybody someone yells, "C'mon we gotta keep moving!" So you didn't feel like you had to kill everyone, but that the mission was more important. A major improvement is the feel and sounds of the guns. They feel great, and I can't tell if it's extra vibration in the controller or what, but it's different. It's crisp. I love breach scenes. i swear I'd buy a game where all you do it breach every room.
Now before you declare me a CoD fanboy, remember, this is all just the campaign I've been talking about! I haven't even touched the multiplayer or the special ops missions/survival. Those are what will ensure that you will never need to ditch the game just because the campaign is over.
This game is loaded and if you can put aside the "it's cool to hate on modern warfare" fad that seems to be all the rage, you'll be blown away at this masterpiece. I love Modern Warfare 3 and I don't care who knows it.
    P.S. Airplane level FTW!

Changing kill streaks to point streaks, while good for rewarding some objective play doesn't encourage much teamwork as intended. The maps are TOO small and the model for unlocking attachments is worse than Black ops' method which I enjoyed IMO. Overall the graphics are dated, the multiplayer is much of the same from the previous MW's and singleplayer doesn't provide the thrill of MW or MW2. Not worth it's price tag IMO. Expand

I give this game at least an 8- why? Because I like it- what it does, how it does it and how it looks doing it. MW3 may have a medium-short length campaign, but it works! The story gets told (and unlike most it seems, I followed it) and unlike the cliche riddled, CoD ripoff of a campaign in BF3 (get real BF fans, something bad happens before the game, you get interrogated/forced to explain it, and just before the end you get out of the interrogation and help 'save the world'? Black Ops people, did that already. And what the hell is with all the 'I'm on a machine gun! OH NO A ROCKET CRAP I BLEW UP AND NOW I'M DAZED ON THE GROUND!" moments? How many times did that happen? And those stupid quicktime events that appear no where else in the game? At least CoD's consistent between single and multiplayer) and told well. Now, having not played the BF3 mutliplayer (and considering this crowd spamming low scored for competing games, I probably won't) I can't speak out against it, but from what I have heard the multiplayer is the only thing BF3 does right. So, kudos there. MW3? That multiplayer is still fastpaced and hectic. Which game would I buy and play? MW3, handsdown. Which game would I play? Both. Unlike the morons spamming 0 scores for games they're too immature to understand have a right to exist, I won't write-off a game just because it's competition to a game I like. Then again, considering how many problems BF3 had when it launched... I think I'll stick with the people who know what they're doing. Expand

I'm in Ireland and don't have a great net connection but at least with dedicated servers I could find one with good ping but what's the point if you cant rank up on them, so I am forced to go the P2P option, which is, for me at least, a very inferior way of playing. You are at the mercy of lag, whom ever is the host has the advantage. Also with the p2p games it just feels like I am spending more time in game lobbies waiting for players to join than in game and when in game you get the always annoying mitigating host message. spec op is as expected, fun for a playthrough with a friend, but nothing more

survival mode, the new mode is a blast, but IW/sledgehammer/activision really dropped the ball, its only 2 players! i it was 4 people, it could be the new zombies/horde mode.. but with only one other person its nothing anymore.

multiplayer is the biggest let down, i was hoping for he COD4 glory days of fun and frantic fire fights. instead the hit detection and lag is terrible.
you can get shot one time and die, but on the kill cam your shot 5 times. terrible. also magic bending bullets return, the series signature lag feature.

the killstreaks are back but you can have weaker killstreaks that wont reset on death good for people who don't game and run around like me, they also generally help your team instead your your K/D so i enjoy them
the maps are terrible. these can be the worst maps to be put in a 360 game. they also completely recycle COD4 buildings, which isnt bad but if you do that just remake the amazing cod 4 maps.

all in all, the game is a rent. i picked up battlefield 3 and its loads more fun then Mw3, then skyrim comes out Friday so this will be left in the dust.
if your a huge fan of the story, rent for the single player, it doesnt leave you feeling empty and is worth a playthrough

    not worth a buy

I am a fan of the new maps although, camping does seem to be a major factor in the development which is really disappointing for a game classified as "hand to hand combat" or in other words run and gun. With so many dark corners and small windows this installment is yet again another noob tube/campers/snipers dream land. For me the multiplayer has not taken any steps forward. Black ops (although Treyarch is generally hated on by Ward followers) is a far superior game. They hit it home with allowing for claymores, tac inserts, ect as a third button and not having to replace your grenades. However, the most dissapointing part of this game for me is the perks. They have not been changed much from MW2 which was one of the biggest complaints about MW2. Major problems with the arrangment in the 3 slots as well as the pros not really having to do much with that perk at all. Example: Slight of hand pro = change weapons faster? While needing to use a whole other perk to gain faster aiming down the sights. What about marathon? Their is no long even an option for unlimited sprint in a game that is suppose to get back to gun to gun combat. Sure they have extreme conditioning which allows a minimal added time for spint but its in the same slot as 2 other important perks. How about having to use 2 perk slots to accomplish what black ops did with ghost pro. I could rattle on and on about how much better black ops and even MW2 is than this game but in the end I'm truly dissappointed with how much this game has evolved from first person shooters skills to hiding in a corner or by a window and shooting a noob tube toward the area of an enemy or shooting them in the back. The only reason I still rate this game with a 6 is because I do truly enjoy the new map packs for MW2 however not worth $60 and waiting in line at midnight for the release. Expand

THE ONLY REASON I AM GIVING THIS A 3 IS BECAUSE as a sequel, it is deffinitely a rinse lather repeat for the devs (you wonder why they didnt just release it a month after Black Ops because it doesnt even seem like they did much work...)

THE GOOD... there are a few nice adjustments since the last installment of the series. MUCH MUCH MUCH better hit detection. It no longer takes an entire magazine of ammunition to kill your enemies. No more instantkill nube-tubing (the 'nube tube' or grenade launcher is still in, just fixed so it almost never gets an instant kill). Much less lag from any other of the COD installments (I have been playing up to level 30 and have not seen a bit of lag yet. Occasionally, but nothing gamebreaking). The graphics have been polished a decent bit (You can see the sunlight reflect off of the dark gun metal in front of you, and the nice simple details of the environment around you are almost nice enough to make you stop and smell the roses once in awhile). They now offer a wider ability of items and killstreaks SPECIFIC to helping your team-mates and playing the obective rather than just being a lone wolf. What is also pretty cool is they have a whole other killstreak set for those who are really good at lone-wolfing. Instead of killstreaks, you get more and more perks, giving you six perks and a major advantage for one on one combat.

Thats a lot of cool stuff, but thats about it. Heres where the game loses its luster...

THE BAD... For those that have already experienced the COD series, you'll be a little disappointed. Not a lot has changed. In fact, its almost like playing a new map pack on MW2. Not even an exaggeration. If I were to put MW2 in your console and right as a match were about to start, tell you it was MW3, it might actually take you a few minutes to realize it was just MW2. It takes forever to unlock anything decent (I was using the pre-set classes they give you up until level 30 because nothing else I had could compare). Not only that, but you dont even look forward to unlocking anything (except perks of course) because the weapon selection is just so bland. There is little to no customization (hardcore Black Ops players, sorry) and I've tried to log on to ELITE only to get booted off or rerouted back to the game.

The point of my review is to allow people to know that they are being fooled into buying the same game every year for a high price from a company who keeps milking a large franchise for only profits and not to give their loyal customers a quality product, it explains why Modern Warfare 2 is still $60 at retail stores. Maps are alright but as a whole they are poor due to the total lack of variety. The story is very good though, and is the only reason this game gets a five. The other half (Multiplayer) is a big fat zero due to easily exploited flaws in the system and total inability to bring together teams and reward them for working together. I've gone positive twice out of hundreds of matches. My skills haven't changed but this game has. Being killed in THREE bullets no matter the gun means that as soon as you take damage it's a death sentence. And with a mess of kill streaks there seems to be no balance as your pummeled by a million random things making it impossible to keep a "point streak" going in anything other than a support class. (doesn't reset after death.) Your movement speed is awkward as hell. The garbage all over every level makes it difficult to pick people out. And I die a lot. Not because I'm a noob but cuz I feel this game is broken. MW2 was broken with one man army noobtube but did they fix it? Nope. Will they fix this game? Probably not. The way this game is set up is to reward the camper. Because running and gunning isn't possible as you'll lose almost all one on one fights trying to run around. I can't camp. I'm just not that type of player and see no fun in it.

With all my friends who converted to BF3 I held out my judgement and said c'mon guys give this game a chance. COD is fun arcade like fast paced action game. How could they have gone wrong? Well they did. I will be trading this game in next week and I will be waiting for treyarch's black ops 2 hoping that the series that I love isn't completely gone and that a decent about of balance and regular updating that made the game fair, balanced, and fun will return.

I have played this game for several hours now and everything about it has me sick to my stomach. The audio, the graphics, the twitchy gun play. This game hasn't change anything at all since Call of Duty 4. If you are buying this game in hopes of something better or different don't, but if you don't mind paying 60 dollars for new maps then by all means help yourself.

A very good game again how much fun it was Call of Duty 4, has the same graphic of a Modern Warfare 3 with minor adjustments, but that does not diminish the good. The multiplayer is more fun and much more variety in weapons and customization. Excellent game.

Oh and don't feel proud of your first prestige because as soon as you leave the Game for the day, they will reset everything and give a lame excuse that they were unable to receive data of your level. Also don't get me started on the $50 "SCAM" that is cod elite. No double exp. ( so much for the so called 2xexp week debut) no clans, no founder status or anything they said we would receive and to top it off after there HUGE mistake and UNTESTED NON WORKING product they want YOU to give them a 48 hour wait time for this to be fix for when after the 48hrs are over they would have made your $50 in interest in their bank account so they won't give a s*** about you the consumer. Same ol thing, nothing new here. Sounds, maps, guns and a bunch of people riding for the brand. Time to fire IW and get some new talent. At least Treyarc thought out of the box and actually developed a decent Co-Op game! IW nice try, better luck next time.

Activision and its companies associated with the development of the Call of Duty franchise reach a new low. For starters, this game has not offered any innovation like the its prequels. The last few Call of Duty games play and look the same. Each year, it is just a routine of including new weaponry, levels and maps within the developmental process. And content which has been introduced has usually been lame and unimaginative. This indeed the case for Modern Warfare 3. The storyline is generally rushed, unforgettable, ridiculous and generic. As for the characters, I simply could not find myself caring for any of them. This is intended to be a dramatic conclusion to word war 3. Yet it relies too much on action, characters dying, and scripted events to make it remotely interesting. There is no sense of 'humanity' or drama within this game. Instead, it is like playing a Michael Bay movie. No soul, originality or depth; but very eye-catching. But still, the gameplay and graphics are almost the exact same as Modern Warfare 2. I find that especially weak because I found Modern Warfare 2 to be mediocre at best. Neither of both fields received any substantial improvement within Modern Warfare 3. Just run, shoot, use grenade and camp. That practically summarizes the Modern Warfare 3 experience for both campaign and Multiplayer. What has been introduced is either sub-par or broken.

In conclusion, you can find far better games this year. I urge you consider buying Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3 and others instead of this rehashed garbage. By buying this game, you essentially doom the video game industry to an era of video games which sell millions based upon which franchise they belong to without even offering a shred of innovation. This game simply does not merit the amount of praise and sails which it has received.

Another solid entry in the MW franchise. It seems that they have really tweaked the multiplayer and eliminated everything you hate about the last few games. The new kill streak system is really nice as well. My only problem with the game so far is that the campaign was not as exciting as the last few games. Still worth playing to finish the story though. MW3 follows some of what Black Ops started with a more gun on gun gameplay and improves on the Modern Warfare brand. From what I have played of the campaign it is compelling and action packed. The MP is loads of fun, especially the new kill confirmed mode which comes in hardcore, regular and 9v9 ground war varieties. Best Cod since Cod4.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare 3 feels similar to it's brethren, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game. The single player element is still exciting, and multiplayer has more options than ever – if you're a fan of Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3 is a no brainer.

Modern Warfare 3, while still an excellent thrill ride in its own right, feels far too similar to MW2 or even Black Ops for my taste.
  3. I never expected Modern Warfare 3 to go toe-to-toe with EA's juggernaut this year, but it came out of the gates with a tour de force campaign and co-op mode. It loses points with a perhaps too-familiar multiplayer that caters to the juvenile on Xbox Live; though don't be mistaken, Modern Warfare 3 is one hell of a shooter and a highlight for a series that just won't die – no matter how much we wish it bloody would, at times.
