I had never played a mario game before and I was worried about wether I'll enjoy this game with a weird looking stereotypical Mexican character that sounds really high-pitched :p

But I love the game :3 The levels are really nice and fun to explore around. It's not linear at all like I expected, but at the same time it's not like Breath of the wild. It's by no means an open world game

It's by no means an open world game but at the same time you can freely explore where ever you like ! I love this fact, and every inch is filled with secret and interesting things to explore! I was worried about this game being too easy, and while the main game (going from the start to the end of the story) is very very easy the secrets and everything make it a little hard! So I believe you'll have fun regardless!

The plot is well...... pretty awful.... More than awful.... I guess Nintendo isn't just good with stories :p (only played 3 of their games though I'm a new fan!)

so if I would rate it

    Music 7~/10:
It's nice and cute but nothing amazing!

    atmosphere 9.5/10:
lots of different levels and cool looking environments!

Gameplay and mechanics! I would rate that a 8.5~/10 It's very fun!

plot is obviously 3/10 :p But I wasn't buying it for a mind bending plot or anything,

Overall the game is amazing and feels kinda magical :3 I mean I don't know why I enjoyed it so much :3 But I just did a lot! this has been the case for the many Nintendo games I've played lately :3 (well I've played 3....)

Some of the music here is also top-notch, with the Cascade Kingdom music being a highlight.

My only criticisms (fairly minor) with it are that Power Moons (replacing Power Stars and Shine Sprites from previous games) are almost everywhere, thus making it feel like less of an accomplishment when you receive one. Whereas games like Super Mario 64 awarded Power Stars for completing sometimes lengthy missions, here, you're given Power Moons where you'd likely find 1-Up Mushrooms in other games. Also, there is an odd lack of music in some areas.

Ultimately though, I think these criticisms more come down to personal preference, so Super Mario Odyssey still gets a 10 from me. It's a fantastic adventure and highly recommended to any Switch owner.

I have played all of the main Mario games starting with the very first one where I started on the 8bit. And over the last 30 years, I have seen the transformation of these Mario games become amazing! I love Mario and the entire cast (Luigi, Princess, Bowser, Yoshi, Toad, and etc.)!

After clearing the story mode, I am now going back and getting more stars but I am feeling like its a chore and not fun. Having said that while I love Mario Odyssey, I personally think its missing several things to the game - creativity! I loved the Galaxy series much more because the each of the planets offered a different perspective and challenge. This seemed more like the same with different setup - Fire, Ice, Water, and etc. I enjoyed this Mario but I don't think it its a Masterpiece that everyone is calling it. I think the Galaxy series was way more fun and challenging! The story in the Galaxy was so much better too! This game seemed a little to basic and entry level for Mario players except the DARK Moon!

Story - 7 - Lack thereof. Could have had more characters (Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Toad) to play a more important part in the game
Controls - 6 - the controls is the reason why I die most of the time. The camera is not fixed but it should be able to determine how far or away much easier from certain things.
Gameplay - 8 - seemed almost the same for each world using the magic hat. It's gets a little old. I wished they pushed more toward having different characters and their abilities to help Mario on his quest.
Graphics 9 - great graphics and 60 frames is great both on TV and Handheld
Music - 9 - Wished they had more of it!
    Overall - 8

It seemed as though they were running out of ideas and so they just rushed the star idea to place them everywhere. MORE IS NOT BETTER! And wished they did more on the story and interaction of each characters. I think the professional reviewers aren't being really honest if they have played all of the Mario games this is definitely not the best. Having played all of the main Mario games I can see the differences and creativity in each. The "magic hat" while it was fun I think they over played it too long and shouldn't be the entire game.

The costumes as someone else mentioned, while they are nice and fun to look, but weren't integral part in the game! They could have easily made the costumes important to the game mechanics which I agree could have helped break the "HAT" trick idea. I felt that the hat was a great idea but it was over used and wished they would the outfits play a part into the game!!

I think Nintendo doing great things and love my Switch, but this is just not a Masterpiece as the Galaxy Series are! And to be honest its definitely NOT best in the Mario series and people are over exuberant about playing another Mario game and the reason they are raving about it, But after the dust settles they will realize that the Galaxy, Sunshine, and Mario N64 games were much better in design and creativity.

My only real criticisms are power moons and the Broodals.

I like that I don't have to exit and re-enter to get another power moon. I don't like how cheap they are to get. In 64 and Sunshine you had semi-elaborate plots playing out for each shine, and other shines you could get as a side objective. Power moons are just rewards for doing obscure tasks around the kingdom.

Broodals were fun the first time around, boring the second time, and annoying the third time. Why recycle the same fight THREE separate times? Defeat all four of them, rinse and repeat. Nothing changes.

The soundtrack is forgettable for the most part, but there are a few good tracks. Mulitplayer mode is disappointing. Playing as Cappy is boring for Player 2 and makes the game less intuitive for PLayer 1. In terms of difficulty, Odyssey isn't particularly difficult. There are no lives. Whenever you "die", you lose coins. There were a few tricky sections, but for the most part Odyssey wasn't extremely challenging. But that's not a bad thing at all. It’s your standard Modern Mario game; you run, you jump, you kill little mushroom people under the command of a giant fire-breathing-demon tortoise in the confines of a claustrophobic level roughly three and a half jumps in length. And yet, there is something about the atmospheric sound track, brightly colored visuals, and happy go lucky shouting of the small Italian plumber from Japan.
The game clearly draws inspiration from Super Mario 64 with multiple hub levels that you travel through, collecting enough Power Stars – er Moons in this one for… some reason? – to move to the next level. I wasn’t a fan when Nintendo did this with Super Mario 64 and I often find myself wondering why everyone is so crazy for the old 64 Classic. Maybe it is because I took my rose-colored glasses off about the time Nintendo re-released Major’s Mask for the 3DS, but other that the evocation of childhood nostalgia, I don’t have anything positive to say about games from the N64 Era.

And yet, even though Odyssey is following the same formula as it’s N64 counterpart, I find myself enjoying it immensely. I do wish the game lasted a little bit longer, all in all the story runs you roughly 2-3 hours with the rest of the replayability coming from the Power Moon Collect-athon that follows. While it’s fun to go around trying to find all the Moons you can, I also feel a little jaded at the fact that there wasn’t more to do. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting a 30+ hour long story line typical of a JRPG, it just feels lacking. Considering the hype that was built up for Super Mario Odyssey since its initial announcement, I feel more should have been done to increase the length of the game.

Although the Worlds of Odyssey are small they are packed with things to do. Each nook and cranny are filled with different things to do in order to collect the Power Moons. So much so that you might almost consider it oversaturated, but at the same time; the oversaturation of things to do makes up for the lack of room to move and run.

I think the thing that has drawn me into the game the most is the music and sound design. Although the sound of Mario triple jumping can become a bit tiresome after you’re required to do it 13 times in a row; there is no doubt that it is an iconic sound and Odyssey would have suffered without it. My hat is off (ha) to Nobuyoshi Suzuki on his work. Each song for each world and each event feels unique while also drawing inspiration from previous titles to not only give you the feeling of a Mario game but the feeling of something exciting and new.

I really don’t know what else I can say about Super Mario Odyssey other than this; The game is by no means a disappointment, but it is a little disappointing – if that made sense? I went into Super Mario Odyssey expecting a Mario game and in all honesty, that’s what I got. I just wish that with all the hype, all the buildup leading me into Odyssey there was more to it. I do still recommend it to any fan of Mario, Nintendo, or the Switch; but I’m not sure that I can recommend it to anyone else. In addition to that, if you were thinking about buying yourself a Switch, just to enjoy Super Mario Odyssey (like I did with Zelda) I’m not sure I can recommend doing that either. The game is good, but I don’t feel it’s good enough to drop a couple hundred dollars on.

    - There are no hard game overs so making small platforming mistakes that result in death will only cost players a handful of coins
    - The addition of costumes is great and it’s nice that they don’t have unique attributes, otherwise you’d have to run back and forth from the Odyssey to complete different puzzles
    - Everything about the ending sequence on the moon
    - There’s plenty to explore and collect after the story is over and there is a ton of incentive to continue the journey after the credits roll
    - Great Soundtrack; Completely Orchestrated
    - The hidden photos make great use of the Switch’s screenshot feature

    Mixed:
    - The story is lacking a lot of charm that other titles brought to the series … but that ending sequence on the moon made up for it all brought it all back!
    - You can blast through the story in about 4 or hours if you really wanted to but there’s so much to collect along the way; players should take their time
    - You can only get certain moons after the story ends, which they don’t make very clear; on the other hand, players can see the worlds grow before their eyes, which makes them even bigger than they initially appear
    - There are over 800 moons to collect but a lot of them can just be purchased from shops post game for 100 coins each

    Bad:
    - Some actions can only be triggered by motion controls and they can’t be adjusted in the options
    - Some worlds are only used for a single boss fight which was disappointing considering the potential of their themes

It was simply delightful the whole way through, and the Balloon World is not only a great addition of gameplay, but also grants much-needed coins for those striving for the 100% mark. A great Mario title, and a must-play for any Switch owner.

In terms of gameplay, the game reminds me a lot of The Legend of Zelda: there are tons of puzzles and challenging fights that even experienced gamers may have trouble getting through. What makes Odyssey stand out from other Mario games is that it is completely open-world and you don't spend the entire game going level to level. You have to figure out where to go and how to get there, and it's not always obvious. The other main thing that separates Odyssey from previous titles is the map. There are so many different worlds, each with decently large maps. Also, each world has a store with exclusive souvenirs to decorate the Odyssey. CLASSIC MARIO! Builds off Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy to be an amazing true mario game while also having a lot of fresh new stuff. The main storyline is pretty short, and not very hard. Going back and trying to get every moon is where you'll get the most time in-game.

    GRACIAS NINTENDO.

Each Nintendo console has a flagship Mario game, and usually is one of the best games for the system. Odyssey is no disappointment, certainly going to be considered one of the best Mario games and by extension, best video games period.

Odyssey is not a "hard" game or deep. You have your basic Mario premise, Bowser has kidnapped Peach and it's Mario's job to rescue her going world to world chasing Bowser (in this one Bowser is going to marry Peach, which is new). But the defining new game mechanic is Mario's hat. Originally Mario wore a hat so they didn't have to animate hair on the NES, but now his hat allows him to attack enemies and more importantly, take them over! By throwing your hat at a Goomba, a Hammer Bro, a Fish, a freaking Dinosaur Mario becomes said enemy, able to use all of their abilities.

It's by this mechanic that Mario opens up new sections of the Worlds, defeats the bosses, and you have a dozen different ways to traverse the World. There's no linear method to beat the World. Sure, there's goals, but you can hop over the walls, go around the back of the mountain, climb the stairs, whatever you want! The controls on Mario's quintisential jumping and platforming skills are very tight, though somewhat annoying that they are semi-motion controls (I'd prefer not at all), but that's my only gripe with the game.

It's a beautiful, fun adventure, easy enough for a beginner/amateur to beat, but challenging to the expert if you want to get EVERY Power Moon. It's a game that every Nintendo Switch player needs to play, and is almost worth getting the console just to play, but certainly the Switch is worth it just for Mario and Zelda.

This game is an amazing work of art. Each world is lively and enjoyable with TONS of collectibles throughout. The main story line was cute, but really short. That's why I'm giving it a 9 instead of a 10. I love all the thought that was put into each Kingdom. Each kingdom is vastly different than the next which kept the game interesting. I will continue to enjoy this game for many more hours.

It's absolute fun exploring the kingdoms and seeing throwbacks to previous titles, the mix of the 2d and the 3d together works fantastically and there were definitely some "oh cool!" moments.
The production and sound value is phenomenal, it's such a fun Mario game to play and explore.

I, instead, had low expectations because ever since 2010, I've felt the franchise had experienced a serious downfall, and my hype was on Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade 2. Instead of seeing a masterpiece in the trailers, I just saw a 5 or 6/10 game, but decided to give it the benefit of doubt, and not jump to immediate conclusions. Eventually, I got my hands on the Switch, and Super Mario Odyssey as well, and decided to give it a chance. And as you can see by this 8/10, I believe it's pretty clear that the game largely exceeded my initial expectations, but it still left something to be desired.

Firstly, the game marks the first time Mario's cap serves any purpose besides being part of Mario's design. In this game, the cap is an entity named Cappy, who assists Mario on his journey to save Princess Peach, because Tiara (Cappy's sister) was taken by Bowser as well. Cappy can do multiple things in this game, such as allowing Mario to control other beings or acting as some sort of platform for Mario to extend his jumps. The game features several areas (kingdoms) to explore. In them you can collect Power Moons, which are required to advance in the main story. There's so many Power Moons in the game that it can take a long time to gather them all, depending on how much time you dedicate to the game. I also love the visuals in this game (best-looking Mario title I've played), as well as those segments where you become 2D Mario in segments that resemble the original Super Mario Bros. back in 1985. And it's also cool how you can customize your ship and get special outfits for Mario.

However, I have several complaints. The story is pretty much the same as always. The difficulty is low for most of the time, except in some Bonus rooms or in Boss Rematches. It's cool how Mario can wear several types of costumes, but I wish they served any other purpose aside from allowing you to get access to some rooms, like having some sort of special ability, a strength and a weakness. The bosses are awesome-looking, but nearly all of them are underwhelming in dificulty, even Bowser himself. The music is very forgettable, except for maybe 2 or 3 tracks. The motion controls in the game feel so forced. Cappy may give a lot of gameplay options, but character-wise, he's the worst companion Mario has ever had. And Nintendo seems to have attempted to create a group of villains to replace the Koopalings, but they failed terribly: the Broodals. All of them are highly dislikeable, have extremely easy boss fights and are so generic and boring.

Super Mario Odyssey is a good game to a certain extent. Sure, it exceeded my 5/10 expectations, but it still isn't the first game I'd recomend parents to give their son/daughter for Christmas with a Nintendo Switch. However, the game is fun, and you will probably enjoy it all the way.

I am usually a lot cheaper than that lol. But Super Mario Odyssey was definitely a system seller for me and the first Nintendo system I have owned since the SNES back in the mid 90's. The last time I played a Mario game was to its end was Super Mario 3 and I guess as I got into my teenage years my tastes for games started to change so I left Mario and Nintendo behind. But now I have a big boy job and want to own anything I can afford so here we go I got me the Switch Odyssey Edition.

The first thing I noticed right off the bat was how tight the controls feel even with my pro controller. At no point did I ever even think about input lag and Nintendo should be commended for making this a priority. The detail in the world is just incredible given the hardware limitations. So much detail in every corner of the map. Mechanically this one of the most clever and well thought out games I have ever played. Every move that Mario and his captured enemies can perform has a purpose and the platforms are designed based on these abilities and not the other way around. The story is simple yet fun. It is not a punishing platformer but rather enjoyable to discover and explore. I fell in love with the 2d sections that really brought me back to the Mario that I loved back in the day and these sections felt great to play as well. My favorite part of the game was the 2d platforming section in New Donk. What a nostalgia trip. Lastly, I would be doing the game a disservice if I did not mention the amazing soundtrack.

I only have few criticisms but they do bring this all-time great down just peg in my book. After you get through the main story the game does become a bit of a grind. Really all there is left to do is collect remaining moons, get new outfits and replay boss battles (that were slightly above average to begin with). As you collect more moons you unlock the ability to go to the dark side of the moon and the darker side of the moon. These are just boss gauntlets. I hate boss gauntlets in any game I just feel like too much of the focus was on the main story and left us wanting more in the post game but did not deliver.

With that all being said this is still one for the ages and definitely one I could see myself replaying down the line. It really makes me want to go collect older Nintendo systems and play all the Mario games that I missed over the years. 9/10 Amazing.

There's a few objective problems with the game that nobody can disagree with, like the lack of a viable control scheme that doesn't include motion controls despite all of the duplicate button functionality. Makes the harder content unplayable or overly frustrating with the pro controller or playing in handheld mode. Even with the joycons, the motion isn't reliable for some actions, and the analog sticks are so sensitive at high speeds, some of the moons are more difficult than using a pro controller where the sticks are more subtle. This is big enough to take any game out of 10/10 contention. I feel like if a reviewer only plays on a television using the joycons separated from each other, they will never understand the pains with the other setups, and that's a very big problem for a console that is supposed to be as flexible as the switch and this is their flagship title.

I also think there are valid criticisms about the lack of variety and mechanics, as well as how padded out the game feels, although each person will have a different opinion of that. Once the novelty wears off, I can't help but think that Galaxy is just a better game.

I think this is more like 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

Super Mario Odyssey is as close to perfect as any game can be. After hitting 100% completion, I have to say it's one of the best games I've ever played, and would have been my game of the year for 2017 if not for Breath of the Wild.

What makes it so good? To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games.

    What makes it so good?

To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games. There's something magic about being able to become practically every enemy you encounter and learning how to use their unique characteristics to your advantage. However, even without that fantastic new addition, the basics are all incredible. Movement is fluent, and the quest to find all 880 moons, and the many regional coins hidden in each kingdom, is fun - they make the game a lot bigger than I expected and the challenge presented by the sheer volume and creativity of the moons (which will surely be appreciated by completionists) kept me playing for more than 55 hours (the addictive minigames and leaderboards helped to bolster that playtime). After seeing everything the game has to offer, I was happy with the varying difficulty. Furthermore, Odyssey has an excellent tone, never taking itself too seriously, whilst being incredibly charming. There's a certain polish applied to everything in the game that keeps it consistent and keeps it feeling alive. Every single kingdom is impeccably well designed, from the soundtrack to the characters and creatures that live there. There isn't a single forgettable location, with it even making something memorable and interesting out of snow and water levels. I don't think I could pick a favourite nor the worst - every kingdom is truly special (however, I think it's only fair to give the stellar Metro Kingdom a mention). One of my favourite things was to discover what each kingdom had to offer, because of how distinct each is from the last. There's so much to see, and its a pleasure to be able to get absorbed in the excellent soundtrack and interact with the brilliant environments.

It's fun. I don't see how anyone could dislike it - the variety is so intense that it's hard to imagine that there isn't something here for everyone. It's far better than any other Mario game I've ever played, and far surpasses the likes of Super Mario 64. This is one of those games that is so good that people will be using it as a benchmark for years; it's raised the standards for modern platformers and collectathons.

Every single moment spent playing Odyssey is a moment well spent - this is an objectively perfect game that is deserving of it's universal praise, and of it's name. Odyssey, meaning epic journey, couldn't be a better fit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tl;Dr It's brilliant. If you want to get it, knock yourself out. I mean, yeah, it has been a bit broken by modding, but it's still a fun, enjoyable, exciting and sometimes frustrating experience.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead. Proceed with caution.
So, where do I even begin with this game?
Super Mario Odyssey is, by far, one of, if not the best games currently out on the Nintendo Switch. Retaining the same linear-open-world-style feel as Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 and 2, it more than improves on the format with a host of new game mechanics, a lot of stages and collectibles that'll have you reeling for hours, and one very horrible obstacle at the end. Well, I say horrible, but very difficult. I am, of course, referring to the Darker Side of the Moon, and not the regular Moon Kingdom, with its incredibly long course, incorporating everything the game has thrown at you once more. But, I'm losing track, and I'm going off on a tangent. The motion controls provided by the Switch's "Joy-Con" controllers also compliment the game well, with the throwing gestures feeling almost second-nature very quickly.
I mean, sure, the game has its flaws, such as broken online gameplay in the Balloon World and Koopa Freerunning minigames, with hyperspeed mods ruining the course leaderboards for Freerunning, and impossible-to-reach balloons in the Balloon World.
Overall, the game has a simple but exciting feel about it, and is definitely a must-buy for any Switch owners. If you enjoy a good open-world platformer with simple controls and new features that add a new layer to the game, then you are going to love Odyssey. Oh, and don't get me started on the soundtrack. Trust me, you are going to randomly start humming "Jump Up, Super Star" or "Break Free (Lead The Way)" at some point (not that that's necessarily a bad thing). Kate Higgins does an impressive job on vocals, and on voicing Pauline, who finally becomes a major character, as the mayor of New Donk City - the fictional city within the Metro Kingdom.

It was an absolute joy to play through, and I love that they've structured the game to have a ton of replay value/new game plus features. I can't put much more without spoiling, but i will say this: get the game. Expand

I would have liked the whole game's use of the capture mechanic to be like in cap land, where there were Winged Goombas that you could capture for fun. I didn't really like to capture many enemies though, I felt they were clunky and very situational. Some of the best ones like the tank, winged gooma, Tropical Wigglerr Flying Dino Dude and Dinosaur are fun because they shake up the game play so much. I was hoping the levels would be bigger, like maybe all Sand Kingdom size, but I know that it's quality over quantity. Some of the moons felt like Korok seeds, just because they were so easy to find.
I've been negative, so now what I liked. I loved the fact that Cappy can be used as a platform to jump off of. It made me feel like a bad ass when I could scale a wall from my platforming ability. The moons that have some form of a level I really enjoyed. Being able to jump from a high place and being able to get to a platform made me feel cool. Moving around felt fun, platforming was fun and the levels were never badly designed, maybe just bland at some points. The motion controls were really, really well implemented in my experience. The cap attacks like homing cap were easy to perform consistently. I have not finished the game, so I might redo this review if my opinion changes.

Plus, the motion controls feel uneven and convoluted on first try.

Regardless, Super Mario Odyssey is still worth checking out. Great level-designs, unique details, crisp animations, and has that palpable sense of joy that most Nintendo games possess. The lack of challenges is a little off-putting, so I can't say it's as memorable as Breath of the Wild. Still very good. 8/10

Super Mario Odyssey is by far the best 3D Mario title that Nintendo has ever produced. It owes so much of it's success to Super Mario 64 and is extremely creative and innovative with the new "Capture" mechanic. It owes so much of it's success to Super Mario 64 and is extremely creative and innovative with the new "Capture" mechanic. However, I am only giving t a 9 out of 10 because of the issue with the motion controls. While they are appreciated, Nintendo could easily map these motion control options to actual buttons. For example, rather than having two buttons to throw Cappy, have one to throw him and one to do the spin attack. This issue could easily be solved in a patch or update though, and when and if that does happen, I would increase my score to a perfect 10 in a heartbeat.

The graphics in my opinion are absolutely gorgeous and are a massive step up from Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube and the Galaxy games on the Wii, outputting to 1080p 60fps when in the dock and 900p 60fps when in handheld mode, which is very impressive considering how massive the game is.

The main object of the game is to collect Power Moons, which are the equivalent to Stars in Super Mario 64. While Super Mario 64 had only 130 stars, increased to 150 on the DS remake, Odyssey boasts almost 1000, and that number could go up even further inf Nintendo decides to make and release DLC that increases the number of moons and kingdoms, which by the way, there are currently 17 kingdoms as of the time of writing this review.

Another great addition to this game is the various 2D sections where if you go into a pixel pipe, you come out the other side as a]m 8-bit 2D Mario, paying tribute to the original Super Mario Brothers game released on the NES in 1985.

What also amazed me about this game is Nintendo's incredible attention to detail. For example, when you enter an 8-bit section, the music alongside the game turn into an 8-bit version of itself and whatever outfit you happen to be wearing for Mario a the time will also be represented in 8-bit.

In conclusion, not only has has Nintendo produced 2 incredible games, Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, both of which are 10/10 quality on their new smash hit system, the Switch, but Super Mario Odyssey I think will go down as one of the absolute best video games... OF ALL TIME! WELL DONE NINTENDO!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In Super Mario Odyssey, there are lots of places to explore. This game focuses a lot on the capture abilities, and many areas are based around them. I really liked this mechanic, and each and every capture is different, except for a few exceptions. I also liked the kingdoms in this game. While some are pretty small, they all feel big in their own way. Each kingdom holds various moons, which are similar to the stars and shines of previous titles, but also the korok seeds of loz botw. I was shocked finding out there is 883 collectible moons in the game, and even more shocked when you can buy the rest for a total of 999 MOONS. Each collectible moon feels rewarding, but I don't really like how you can buy them. I can take one point off for that, since instead of doing the hard work of finding all collectible moons you can just buy them. Each of the platforming sections feel difficult to the skill level they are targeting, and some sub levels in the kingdom do have difficult challenges for a rookie platformer like me. Most enemies were not difficulties, but that makes sense, since in this game enemies are to control, not kill. Though I didn't like how easy some bosses were, another point off for that. The only boss that seemed hard for me was the dragon boss.
In summary, Super Mario Odyssey is a great game that celebrates this great franchise, but it does have its share of flaws. I enjoyed this game to my hearts content, and loved exploring the diverse areas of the beautiful game. I hope that when you play this game, you feel the same.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game, while in my non platforming or collectathon fans opinion is near perfection and is undoubtedly a masterpiece is not without two faults that stop it from being a perfect ten in my honest opinion, (the only other one i consider myself a true fan of is Mario 64) the two faults lie within only moderate parts of the game, being the repetition of bosses , forced fights with Bowser's minion wedding planners multiple times each for the main story, while i could see why they did this i would have really preferred some more moons in different smaller areas, well hidden or even in plain sight/ awarded for completing a mission like the others, this bleeds into the post game where as a chunk of the challenges are re fighting the bosses, yes this is pretty common in video games but over the years the Mario series has proven to be more creative than this, that said i know a lot of people like boss rematches are popular but ive never really liked them, aside from maybe going back to fight ganondorf because of the epic nature those fights are presented with and usually only fought once in the game, also a bonus kingdom shares in this theme with the dark side of the moon housing a boss rush tower and seemingly not much else, the icing on the cake however goes back to when the amiibo were first revealed in their packaging , logos for the kingdoms are shown on a globe completed across all three boxes, isle delphino from Mario sunshine to my knowledge being the only one not to be in the game, while the mushroom kingdom was shown but was never in any trailer, serves as the love letter tribute setting of the post game in the form of peach's castle from super Mario 64 , complete with Yoshi still hanging out on the roof waiting for Mario to come say hello and throw his hat to control his reptillian friend, a couple of things i forgot to mention are the oddly real looking dragon boss, sent at you by Bowser as well as an escape sequence right befor the credits with the final area collapsing around you, which brings back flashbacks of escaping hyrule castle in ocarina of time, the only big differences being that there is no swerve extra boss phase and that you actually get control of Bowser himself to get yourself and Peach out of there set to a track that puts even jump up superstar to shame. In conclusion i can say without a doubt this game stands as my all time favorite Mario and platformer and these few small admittedly personal gripes should not deter anyone from buying this game, it is a must own for any switch owner Expand

I was struck dumbfounded in my first visit to Tosterenna with how many moons there were to collect, and even more so surprised finding out there were over 800 moons in total for me to discover--which gives this game hours upon hours of gameplay even after the main story is completed.

I've only got one major complaint: the controls. Sure, for basic gameplay they're acceptable. But playing tabletop mode makes Mario's movements limited as you're unable to preform so many of the hat spins and throws. Even more so when playing in docked mode with two separate joycons the actions never seem to work. I've never once been able to flick my hat up or down--and spinning it in a circle is always a hit or miss. This is obviously frustrating, as I'd like Mario to move, jump, and act with as much fluidity as possible.

That being said, still an amazing game overall, and definitely worth the purchase price.

It brings delightful mechanics and new interesting exploration that hasn't been seen in the series since Super Mario 64. The textures, framerate, and cartooney-graphics on the switch are a match made in heaven. This game is definitely worthy of being ranked amongst some of the best video games of all time. While I'd love to give this game a perfect 10/10 there is one major gripe holding it back; the controls. The controls are, well, not great. For the best experience the game should be played with the joy-cons separated due to the motion control aspect of throwing "Cappy." I have issues with the joy-cons for separate reasons that I won't list in this review. But in summary, the controllers don't sync well from a distance (i.e. which is not so good for home theatre setups), the thumb-sticks are in an awkward position, and the motion controls aren't always super accurate. I can't tell you how many times I went for a circular throw of Cappy only to have Mario throw him straight forward. I originally thought that the motion controls were a gimmick until I saw them being integral in games like the new Zelda. Games like Super Mario Odyssey make me concerned for the future of gaming on the console. There is a reason I went out and bought the $70 pro-controller. I didn't want to have to deal with the gimmicks or the cramping. The controls really disrupt the experience of the game and makes it much more "choppy" than its handheld controller predecessors. What's worse is that the other two methods of playing aren't much better either. If you want to play in handheld-mode get ready to shake that switch worse than a 90-year-old with Parkinsons. Want to play with a controller? Have fun trying to get accurate motion controls. That's what justifies the two point deduction. All-in-all this game is a must buy if you own a switch. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not buying this game. Expand

Each world you visit in your journey doesn't overstay its welcome and is very consistent and smart about treating the player to wonderfully designed sandbox environments and well thought out mini challenges. The real highlight however isn't what we already know about 3d Mario, its what's new to the party. Mario on his predictable yet charmingly traditional journey to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser meets a new friend, the top hat shaped ghost named Cappy, who allows Mario to possess and control new and old enemies. One cant help but wonder how Nintendo come up with these insane ideas, but this mechanic is more than just your typical gimmick and proves that Nintendo still have the skill and genius to successfully supply joyful and mind blowing moments. Playing as a Bullet Bill, Goomba and other old enemies is beyond satisfying, but surprisingly the new enemies prove to be the best monsters to capture and play as. As well as your standard minions stopping you in your path, you'll also meet some of the best bosses in Mario's history, one of them in particular left me speechless and I'm sure will do the same to you. The game is a jaw dropping package of new ideas built on a solid foundation made by previous Mario games, and im thrilled to say that this is yet another Masterpiece by Nintendo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a while now I have felt that Mario games were getting stale. They were always fun though since the Galaxy games every new entry felt the same with little creativity. Well it seems as though Nintendo finally let out their crazy ideas at once for Super Mario Odyssey as it is the most creative and wacky Mario game in ten years. To start, Super Mario Odyssey is a game that is simply pure fun. It is the modern day Super Mario 64 with tons of collectibles, great music, and colorful environments. The main thing that makes Mario Odyssey great is how fun it is to control Mario. He has many of the moves from past games such as the triple jump, long jump, and dive. But the thing that really adds more to this installment is the new hat character Cappy. Cappy allows Mario to make insane jumps and control his enemies making exploring each Kingdom exciting and unique from one another. The game's main story is short which may be disappointing though I feel the game really gets going after the final boss as each area gets filled with more power moons to collect and even a post game kingdom longtime fans are sure to love. Some of the areas in this game are undoubtedly the best in the Mario series. The best kingdoms are the largest ones such as New Donk City, Steam Gardens, Tostarena, and Mount Volbono. Though some Kingdoms are lackluster due to their small size and lack of areas to explore. There is one kingdom in particular later in the game that looked really unique aesthetically though there weren't many things to do in it which I felt was a really missed opportunity. There are some areas in this game where I felt Nintendo could have done more with.Super Mario Odyssey is probably the first game that really shows of what the Switch can do. The power moons are quick enough to get individually for handheld play but also satsfying to collect for long play sessions on the TV.. I also believe playing with the detached Joy cons is the best way to enjoy the game as they allow quick movement and allow you to target your cap throw to enemies, objects and collectibles. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is the most fun Mario game since the Galaxy games. It returns to the sandbox style of Mario 64 which makes the game feel familiar but the surprises of the kingdoms and capture abilities gives a much needed breath of fresh are for a franchise that was starting to feel generic. Super Mario 64, one of, if not the most loved 3D platformer of all time set the standards, along with Crash Bandicoot, of what this type of game should be. They set the bar high, and not many other titles have been able to reach it, let alone exceed it. Along with games such as the remastered Crash Bandicoot "N-Sane Trilogy" and "A Hat In Time" This particular 3D platform feels like a special tribute in honour of the 3D Platforming era of the mid-to-late 90s. It's smooth gameplay, remarkable graphics and it's cute and charming story makes this game what it is, and the possession cap ability adds an extra layer of gameplay. The hidden collectibles on each map makes every space used for something that isn't just platforming. Overall, this game is a beautiful, remarkable achievement in gaming history, and it's selling fast, as well as the console.

    OVERALL VERDICT:

    10/10 - Masterpiece

It's amazing graphics, attention to detail and smooth, responsive controls makes this game shine through all the other titles of this year. It's beautiful soundtrack makes it stand out, and it is an essential game to buy in the new year.

Super Mario Odyssey. Need I say more? Really? You're making me have to go through another review. fine.

Pros: Mario jumps up to crazy heights. Literally. A mix of the F.L.U.D.D pack from Super Mario Sunshine, and the triple jump dive combo in Super Mario 64. Cappy. He can capture ALMOST ANYTHING. Even a hand in the Knucklotec fight, to revive the feel of punching goombas. The number

Cappy. He can capture ALMOST ANYTHING. Even a hand in the Knucklotec fight, to revive the feel of punching goombas.
The number of moons. 833 not including Crazy Cap ones. I salute those people who 100%ed this game, as there is so much content.

Crazy Cap stores. Tired of regular ol' Mario? If you earn enough kingdom specific purple coins, you can buy a new outfit for Mario. There are a total of 42 outfits and 41 hats.

The difficulty progression. As you get further into the game, the difficulty increases. Take the Cascade Kingdom and compare it to the Darker Side for example. You probably get it now.

I've been adding lots of pros, and I don't want to add more because it would take a long time.

Cons: Not really many. The number of moons would go here too because there are way too many.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this game so much First one thing people seem to bash on about is the difficulty, some say its the same old 2d game slapped into a 3d game.2 Words you are wrong first its a Mario game just look at Mario galaxy 2 and tell me that the final boss is even partly hard and I will face palm myself.Just tell me how you could compare that final boss to you freaking possessing a trex in the 2nd world thats about 11 or 12 kingdom's before the final boss the final boss,Some say its total old content. When in reality have you possessed a tank, yoshi,a trex, and Bowser!Or get chased by a trex in new donk city. Then later have a section where you go pixel mode and play jump man aka donkey kon the first game Mario aka Jumpman debuted in?In fact the only reason I consider giving it a 9 is because of the motion controls and thats it.Added Sarcastic remark The games totally easy its not like every single technique has its situation use which takes time to practice and the fact every transformation has a limit you have to go and find a way to make it useful example People who don't know how every transformation is useful someway:Oh look a useless goomba it can't jump high it's useless.People who do know how every transformation has a use:Hm a goomba what should I do.1 minute later finally I stacked 100 goomba now I can jump to the sky. Also side note for people who don't know you lose 10 coins and you can buy stuff with it in a non mario rpg game! Super Mario Odyssey is a brilliant game which seamlessly throws back to the classic while mixing it up with innovations like Cappy and the new kingdoms to explore. This game also allows Mario to control and move way better than any of his predecessors. With so much to do even after the main story, Super Mario Odyssey will bring you back after time and time again, like it has many others.

This game features a welcomed and appreciated return to form, with the platforming akin to the days of 64 and sunshine. but it still struggles to escape the shadow of Super Mario Galaxy, a game which it has failed to top in my eyes. Some of the tedious missions, but mostly a real lack of interest to collect them all, keep me from liking this game as much as Galaxy or 64

This game is one of the best I've played in a long time. The controls are extremely fluent, the story, though very basic on the surface, has different subplots which do a perfect job at keeping the player gripped. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here we are, guys. The mostly-anticipated game for the Nintendo Switch and of course, as one of them, this year. Super Mario Odyssey attempts to bring new ideas to the table without going overboard and right away it just straight out worked. Sure the changes to certain Mario gameplay may be a huge hit-in-the-spot, but you can easily ignore all of this game's problems due to the way this game's presentation is being shown right when the game is being played. Just how many games do I need to give this very high score anyways? This is the best game of all time on the Nintendo Switch. You get to explore different worlds and it's a very relaxing game. It's doesn't exist words for how good this game is, it's that good. Expand

Super Mario Odyssey is extremely repetitive, easy, has a pitiful story, the environments are ugly, and the core mechanic with Cappy is no different than hitting a question mark brick. Problem is, people cannot look at this objectively and instead bad mouth whoever has the dissenting opinion. Super Mario Odyssey literally is looking for moons to power your ship to fly to the next location to look for more moons to power your ship, that’s it. It doesn’t even make finding moons a challenge, you literally turn a corner and there is one, you go to the next corner and there is another...it totally diminishes the value of finding a moon. All the bosses inbetween including the final boss are three head stomps to win, there is no challenge in that. This seems like this was rushed by Nintendo...it’s basically the Korok seed portion of Breath of the Wild with a Mario skin in a smaller environment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. In my opinion, it is the best Mario game of the franchise. All of the kingdoms are quite lovely and offers a great variety places to explore. It is what I consider to be the true sequel to Super Mario 64 from the Nintendo 64 era. Though, the main story is quite short and easy and can be completed in around an hour, that isn't what makes this game amazing. So if you're someone who doesn't like collectathons and trying to get every little thing then this game might not be for you, but for someone who loves to 100% games then this game will be perfect for you. There are over 850 moons in the game (maxing out at 999 moons including the ones you buy from the shops infinitely) and most kingdoms have regional coins which you collect to buy stickers or props for your Odyssey (usually 50 or 100 regional coins per kingdom). The game is NOT perfect in any way, and that's the only reason why it doesn't get a 10 from me. Just to say though, that is not a bad thing to say about a fantastic game like this, I want games that are not perfect already as it'll give room for improvement in the next lineup in Mario games. You will get a TON of hours out of this game, as I currently have around 700 moons and already have 52 hours into the game. Solid game, definitely worth the $60 you must pay for it. Expand

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
