Super Mario Odyssey was so fun that I ended up beating the game twice. It constantly throws new gaming mechanics at you that are fun to master. The only major problem I had was that the game felt like it had too many moons to collect.

Awesome game yet lacking some challenge. It is very much family oriented and therefore, at the begining it can be way too easy and therefore, slow. Once you beat the game, the real challenge starts and that's where long time fans start enjoying a homeage to that Mario challenge Nintendo used to put in their Mario games.

One of the greatest Mario / platform games to ever exist. Hours and hours and HOURS of fun (and maybe some expected hours of frustration) but this is one of the smartest and most thought out games of its kind that I’ve ever played. Can we please get a sequel, Nintendo!?

The best Mario since 64. Thought is was ok. Sure there's a lot of new Mario abilities but they're not all necessarily fun.

Super Mario Odyssey is breathtaking. I truly had no words while playing it. Everything about it is remarkable. This is peak level design and gameplay. Everything flows in a way that is hard to describe unless it is played. Do yourself a favor and play it.

A joy to play right off the bat, and a slam dunk for the Mario series. It's not my favourite one, and could've enjoyed more co-op play the likes of Super Mario 3D World enjoyed on the Wii-U. But the graphics and homage to certain older game in the series was a welcome treat.

Nearly 2 years later after the release of Odyssey, I feel like this game was a bit overhyped in some ways. I definitely thought it was fantastic and the game was very much worth it. I must say though, I don't think it is a masterpiece like Galaxy 1 and 2. It also didn't bring me as much joy as I had playing Super Mario 64 and Sunshine over the years but that might just be nostalgia. Even though I thought the game was a bit too easy compared to past entries in the 3D Mario games, the amount of content in this game is truly amazing. It took me around 90 hours to 100% this game with all of the costumes and the worlds are very exciting to explore. I don't think its up there with BotW though as after I beat it I didn't want to come back to it nearly as much as with BotW which I think is a bit better overall because it truly innovated the open world genre. Negative things aside, I think this game is truly fantastic because there are still many great things about this game and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the 3D Mario games like or a near perfect game in general.

You guessed it. Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser and it's time for the mustached hero to save the day again. Admittedly this is my first time picking up another mario platformer since probably Super Mario 64 back in 1996. I was more hooked on the party games and the Paper Mario series versus the genre staple.

The new design for Odyssey is based around your new friend Cappy.

Your old red hat bites the dust and you meet a race of hat people who just happen to be able to turn into special hats. The special twist comes from you can throw your hat on to a bunch of different things in the game. Mario physically takes it over like some voodoo mind control, while forcing all things to don a mustache. A T-rex with a mustache. Hysterical.

Platformers stick to the tried and true recipe. Collect so many of these items while maneuvering around tricky landscapes and enemies. With a skill that needs to be precise otherwise a quick death and starting back from the beginning. Odyssey hides a number of the special star items cleverly around each world. You only need about 10% of the total stars to progress through each world if you want to rush down Bowser. For the collectors out there, there is definitely a time sink waiting if you want to 100% the game.

Overall I enjoyed my time jumping around the different creative worlds in Odyssey. The levels were beautiful and all based around the theme of the world. Samurai, Dinosaurs, Snow etc. There were even outfits you can spend coins on to buy world outfits and make your Mario look flashy. Or spend 1000 coins to have your Mario run around in his boxers. Whatever your heart desired.
The annoyances came from the 3D platforming. Gone are the easy days of 2D side scrolling where you just worried about forwards and backwards. It takes precise control making the timed jumps needed in most levels, using the switch joy-cons as intended, one wrong slight angle and you are plummeting to your death. Jumping down from a height and thinking you will land safely, only to overshoot it by a hair and again….die. Frustrating but not terrible.

Just throw your cap to become one of the creatures and use their abilities. From a simple frog jumping higher, a plant that spits fire or acid to glider that can fly through entire kingdom. And yes - just beating the game is very simple but there might be one or two levels where you get stuck for an hour repeating it until you beat it. And with every failure you feel that it was your fault and you want to get better, because the controls are so smooth and responsive that you just can't blame anyone but yourself. The nostalgic parts that tie into previous Mario games are also very soothing to the soul. It is a must play for lovers of Mario and just relaxed fun.
Here is where I have to dispel this almost perfect 10 for 10 score. First let be saying that I am a hard critic. I have never given a game a 10. For a game to be a 10, it has to be perfection level on all my categories. Mario gets a perfection for level design and performance. In those, it was no doubt a masterpiece. Game play was Exceptional (9), but where it lacked was the shoehorning motion controls and most objectives were purely centered around collect em style play. Nothing unique here, and the reason game play gets a 9 is because of the uniqueness of accomplishing those goals.

    It's detractors are the following
    - Story (same Peach has been kidnapped, go save her) Nothing new, but worth a 7 because at least they're consistent.
    - Graphics (Clean and smooth, but we're still working off the Swtich here, and will never be able to reach the potential Mario can with an underpowered console)
    - Collect-em gameplay. Game is just centered around get power moons from this world, go to the next, power moons, move on, power moons, move on. Very redundant.

Overall, the game feels like a true next evolution of Mario games, but does not stand out among all other games to warrant the near perfect review scores it receives from nostalgia driven critics.

I started out this Mario adventure skeptical. I felt like I'd seen enough "tablet" gaming that I felt this couldn't be a "REAL" Mario game. After having beaten the game, I can honestly said, I was proven completely wrong! This not only is a Real Mario adventure, this is one of the best Mario games I have played in years. I remember the novelty of Super Mario Galaxy's really cool planetsI started out this Mario adventure skeptical. I felt like I'd seen enough "tablet" gaming that I felt this couldn't be a "REAL" Mario game. After having beaten the game, I can honestly said, I was proven completely wrong! This not only is a Real Mario adventure, this is one of the best Mario games I have played in years. I remember the novelty of Super Mario Galaxy's really cool planets and thinking "Oh the next game has to be Mario Universe, right?". When it was announced that the next game would be an Odyssey on a single planet, I felt like "There's no way this could top Galaxy or Galaxy 2." but it certainly has.

When you first start out the game, Peach has yet again been kidnapped by the notorious Bowser. Of course, he plans to make her his bride, but in doing so, he's also kidnapped the princess of another land, the Ghost Hat people... ok... I know that sounds really weird, and it is, but it's still fantastic. In this game, Mario LITERALLY wears different hats. Sometimes these hats provide perks and there are many outfits that match each hat. Mario can use his hats to posses various creatures/enemies and become them. Yes, he very much takes over their possessed body and can use their powers. Often times these powers result in Mario locating his goals, in this game, that being Power Moons instead of stars. Which is different... somehow.

Moving on, Mario's controls have evolved over the years and all his staple moves have returned with a few more added to the fray. Mario can toss his hat and even spit and toss his hat so that it flies around him in a circular pattern, bopping every enemy around him. It's a really cool move that when done correctly, is very satisfying when you kill a big group of enemies with it. Furthermore, when you posses enemies, their controls work as you'd expect and they are very responsive. Possessing bad guys is so much fun, you'll want to try every creature you meet just to see what their powers are and what secret areas they can help you sniff out.

Speaking of which, the level design in this game is no different than past Mario adventures, in which I mean it's completely brilliant! The themes that are provided throughout the game have accompanying outfits/hats to go with them and each time you get to a new land you can get excited and say "I can't wait to see what cute little outfit Mario's going to buy in this land!" My favorites are Clown Mario and MexiMario. They are so adorable.

Ultimately, what's the bang for your buck? TREMENDOUS, if you dig in! There's a lot to see and do in this adventure if you give it time and seek out every nook and cranny. It's easy to get hooked on looking for all the power moons and since Mario is such a joy to control, the game is super addictive. Furthermore, you can purchase Amiibo characters from the store and provide Mario even MORE outfits! If you own a Nintendo Switch and have ever been a fan of Mario, GET THIS GAME! I have been with Mario since he began his adventures through the plumbing tubes and I'm so happy to see where he's at now. Mario is a great mascot and will continue to enchant people of all ages for years to come. You'd have to have a heart of stone to not look at Mario in his cute little outfits and gush like crazy. IF YOU PLAY THIS GAME, AND YOU HAVE A HEART, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

It's a good game, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it was very "zeldafied". I prefer Marios where the course itself is the challenge, like Super Mario 3D Land, rather than picking up compelling items to progress. But that's just my opinion. -Inconsistent Art... the assets are very different its like each kingdow is a diffferent game... it is not cool.
-Some odd Art design... Why Real humans... Why? Whats the point to mix cartonish and real humans??? Doens't make any sense to me....
-The game have just cool good Kingdowns... [Sand, Metro and Flower]. The rest are just ok... But, some of the kingdowns are really bad and lazy... Cap, Sky, Snow, Moon, Ruined are very worst level design ever...It is wast of potential, unbelivebe bad... Such nice atmosfere and bad level design...

-The game is VERY SHORT, the 900 moons is just fack advertise... lot of those moons, looks likes "Coins" The moons looks so random... you even need a TOAD to hint whaere the moon are, coz, it is very bad design.... The level design should be enough to the player figure out where they should go to find the moons... but we need a HINT in the map... it proves that design is bad...

The game could be better, with 120 well designed Stars... the moon is not bad... but should be a second intem not the first...

Super Mario Odyssey is a Mario game that has elements from every 3D Mario game. The main element (capturing enemies) is probably the best addition to a 3D Mario game to date. The level design, music and gameplay is amazing. I'd say Mario Odyssey is the best Mario game since the Galaxy games.

Musical y graficamente increible. Muy recomendado.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how good are the puzzles and the challenges, if the story isn't good the game is forgettable and just a pastime and for that, Mario Odyssey works perfectly.

I finish the game in only 9 days. I got about 190 moons and there are a lot more to collect. I know It sounds lame but I think It could be longer than that just giving you more moons to fill the Odyssey power. I still strongly indicate this game. There are a lot of easy challenges and you could get through the game fairly easily by following the main objectives. But if you want to go beyond the main game there is a TON of extra challenges and difficulty to keep you going.

There were a few Power Moons that were tedious or insanely difficult, but if you're just looking to have a great time you can totally bypass them. But if you want to go for 100% completion the game isn't unfair at all. Everything is doable. You're just asked to master the tight controls, which in itself is enjoyable. Nothing is perfect, but Super Mario Odyssey is amazing and deserves 10/10 in my opinion.

Most kingdoms also have some very unique captures, which, unlike most games , are all fun( besides one of them which i'll not spoil). By the way, Mario's movement options are so fantastic (you can even beat the game without jumping!) and diverse that even in the late game when you're trying to collect the 800+ power moons it is still(mostly) fun. Also, 99% of this game's power moons are rewarding and feel really good to collect(besides 4 of them). This game ISN'T too easy: The main campaign won't be tough, I'll admit , but it's really fun, and go past that and you'll find some really tough-but-fair moments, which are equally as fun, and since the campaign isn't long, you won't have to wait much to get to the challenge( but if you try to complete
this game, which the developers really make you want to, it won't take more than 70 hours). Super Mario Odyssey™ pleases every Super Mario™ fan( besides the Mario maker™ ones ):Galaxy, 3d World , 3d Land, 2d fans will have great pure-platforming sections and clear goals, 64 and Sunshine fans will have exploration and collect-a-thon gameplay( you can just skip the goals and have just as much fun), Mario Sports/Party Fans will have tons of (mostly) fun minigames. This game is just suited for any playstyle, and you'll have fun in any way you want to play, and anywhere, since this game is well-suited for short gameplay, due to the power moons , and for long sections, due to the huge kingdoms that don't make you quit them when you collect a mission, making it kinda of addicting, since you will originaly be looking for one goal and suddenly you'll find another moon, then another, then another...
However, the game isn't flawless. The nowhere platforming gauntlets are really great in level design, but the least creative in the game, even compared to 3d Land or the New Super Mario Bros. series, but they are still fun.The parts where you don't have cappy are really annoying, and forced and unresponsive motion controls( which would have been OK in the days of the Wii ,but this is the Switch, and even when you're are clearly playing it in handheld mode or with the Pro Controller the game still shows tutorials( which is another problem, the game shows tutorials even when you are in the final kingdom, but not as frequent as something like Skyward Sword)of actions you can only do with the split joycon ,which turns it somewhat frustrating),and the Co-op mode feels really rushed and unpolished,so if you want to play with your friend, you should look elsewhere (even Mario Galaxy's is better). With that said, this game is really worth-buying,despite these negatives, and the campaign is aproximately the same length as this review.

This game intriduces things we had never seen before in a Mario game, and of course the most important one is the new character that turned up for the first time in nintendo universe: Cappy. Thanks to him we're able to take control of goombas, fireballs, dinasours and many others crazy things. We'll aways be looking forwards to see the next thing we can turn into. However, the essence of a Mario game is always there, so this is the perfect mixture of innovation and loyalty.
Other good things about this game i'd like to mention are the beautiful graphics it has and the so well designed controls, both things make this game great to play over and over again.
In despite of all the good thing that make this game one of the best for the Nintendo switch by now, it has mistakes. The game is even easier than Breath of the wild... They don't even punish us when we die, we just lose some coins and that's all. It's true that there's a great variety of different worlds to explore, but they're very few and some of them too short.
I feel that this is not the ultimate Super Mario 3D game... It's close, but others like Super Mario Galaxy and its secuel were better.

In Odyssey the game just goes on once you collect a moon, making them unrewarding. (I see why they did it, and it's probably better than returning to the Odyssey every time you collect a moon.) Not all moons have this con, especially the main story moons or those special rooms.

Whenever you reach a new kingdom there are a lot of visible "side-moons", which roughly takes 30 minutes to collect them all. When you're done with that you'll have to go searching for them, which felt dull most of the time. I felt like I was wasting my time, going through the same area for the 30th time. (I know that's the key feature of the game, I just didn't like it)

I'd think of Zelda or Skyrim when I hear someone talking about an open world exploration game, not Mario. Mario should contain linear levels which lead you to the final boss

All in all, I give the game a 9/10 because the experience was a bit dull for me. The game is wonderful, one of the best Mario games content- and story-wise, I just didn't like the genre.

-The main story is an alteration of the "damsel-in-distress" kind of story. Bowser kidnaps Peach (and Tiara which is the sister of our cap friend mentioned below) once again... but this time, Bowser is stealing all the "wedding stuff" (like a giant ring or a wedding dress) in all the kingdoms and is organizing a forced marriage with Peach. Mario, once again, has to save her from this marriage with his new companion which is also the new main mechanic of the game, Cappy, and the new ship which let you go from kingdom to kingdom, the Odyssey. The usual Koopalings we see in Mario games in general are replaced by new enemies called Broodals (wordplay with "brutals") which is, for me, the Deadly Six (except they're four) of the Mario series. For me, they're gladly welcome, despite the fact that the character design of them is average (I still prefer them more than the Koopalings). At the end (thus the spoiler tag), there's a cool boss fight and after beating it, you control Bowser with Cappy and, once again, that's a cool feature. And for those who expected Mario to marry Peach, well, you will be disappointed. Peach refuses both proposals and fly with Mario on the Odyssey. That's how it goes.

-The controls are responsive. However, to do the famous technique which consists of launching Cappy, do a dive jump, bounce to Cappy and re-do a dive jump needs a of bunch of practice. Especially that Nintendo rewards the skilled players with from 200 to 500 coins for going out of bounds (on the Sand Kingdom boss' ceiling for example). The motion controls are responsive too (despite the fact, I've played without it).

-The graphics are really amazing. Some people will not like the brutal design change at different kingdoms (like going from the Sand Kingdom to the Metro Kingdom (the famous New Donk City)) but overall, it's beautiful. The kingdoms are detailed, colorful, (I'll exaggerate here) despite the fact that Mario's shadow is at his feets instead of having real shadows like the NPCs (but I understand why).

-The sound design is cool as well. The game also contains multiple sound and music references from the previous Mario (and some Nintendo) games like the 25m music from Donkey Kong on the "Odyssey, ya see" segment in Jump Up, Super Star, the bonus music from Super Mario World in the bonus level of Bowser's Kingdom, the Bowser theme reprisal in the music of the Escape section of the final boss, etc.
Also, Kate Higgins' (Pauline's voice actress and singer) interpretation in both Jump Up, Super Star! and the theme of Escape section of the final boss is well done. There's also Japanese versions of these songs but, even if I prefer Japanese voices in video games in general (like in Fire Emblem Warriors, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round or even Sonic Adventure), I prefer the English versions of the songs here.

-Let's now talk about the lifetime and the replay value of the game and... gosh, it's huge. Once you beat the game, there's a ton of things to do like finding Peach & Tiara in the different kingdoms, collect Power Moons appearing only after beating the game, unlocking the two "Champion's Road-like" kingdoms respectively called Dark Side and Darker Side, buy all the costumes unlocked by collecting more and more Power Moons, etc. It's even possible to reach 999 Power Moons by buying infinite Power Moons at the Crazy Cap store (which is the costume shop in the game). You can also collect them by completing achievements. The rewards of these can be collected in Peach's Castle by talking to Toadette. Even if it's annoying to talk to her again for every single achievement completed, it feels good to hear that Super Mario 64 "Star Get" theme.

-Speaking of references and Easter Eggs, there's also a bunch of them. From the start to the end, there's always a reference somewhere like the 8-Bit Cat Mario and Cat Peach (and also 8-Bit Rosalina in the Dark and Darker Side) at walls or the secret room in the Mushroom Kingdom which is a room straight from Super Mario 64's Peach's Castle.

-Concerning amiibos, it's not required to get them. You can even cheat with Wedding Peach's amiibo for example. It heals you everytime you use it, even when you're fighting the Dark Side bosses. And you can use it without any limits, the only thing you have to do is holding "Right" and scanning it fast since holding the button doesn't pause the game and you can eventually take a hit or die when trying to do so.

In short, Super Mario Odyssey is, despite the flaws the game has, a nearly-perfect game, thus the note. If you're planning to buy a Nintendo Switch, get the bundle with the game... and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with it if you want more challenges. This, Zelda, Persona 5 and NieR: Automata will seriously compete to be the Game of the Year for sure.

I had great time playing this game. It's beautiful and feels great most of the time. It rewards exploration and features good challenge. Filled with charisma and joy, Mario is the definitively the best 3D platforming experience available.

Great game, was not going to every buy it until i saw someone streaming it, so happy i did because this is the best Mario since 64 and would rival that game in pure awesomeness, so many hidden treasures to be found, i have played for over 7 hours and only just finished the 2nd level.

I haven't finished this game, but it is definitely a masterpiece. However, I do not like that fact that certain abilities require you to use motion controls. But the boss fights were easy and you kill 'em in 3 hits, obviously, its difficult in some cases if you want to complete the game %100. And... Where is Luigi? WE NEED LUIGI IN A MARIO GAME!!! I'm not saying the game is bad, its great and I loved the Mario 64 Suit, it filled me with nostalgia :) Expand

Una gran sorpresa de parte de Nintendo. Con este videojuego demostraron que no se necesita potencia en una consola para que sea bueno. mis expectativas dicen que este es el mejor Mario.

I was skeptical about Super Mario Odyssey at first, mostly due to the realistic setting bearing similarities to Sonic 06, I thought that this would be the first bad main series Mario game, I have never been so wrong about a game before. First the soundtrack and visuals are amazing, to say the least. In fact, as of now it is the best looking game on the Switch bar none, though Sonic Mania slightly beats Mario Odyssey in terms of the music. Mario Odyssey’s weakest point is, like most Mario games the story. Summed up it goes like this Bowser kidnap Peach and Tiara the sister of a magic hat named Cappy who Mario has to wear after his normal red cap is torn to bits in the opening cutscene by Bowser. And that leads us to the gameplay and a sandbox Mario game has never felt this good before. Mario controls excellently during normal gameplay with the controls feeling super responsive including the motion controls which had a couple of problems in galaxy. The main gimmick of Mario Odyssey is Cappy who can control enemies, kill enemies and be used as a jump pad which I have yet to use. Cappy when controlling enemies feels like a whole new game that had and equal amount of effort into it as the main game I will leave it at that. There are also 2D sections that aren’t designed well but are so short they dont have time to start getting annoying. You can also buy clothes at a store which dont do much but can be pretty funny to wear. One last criticism I have is that after taking a hit you cant restore health by grabbing a coin which has been a has been in every Mario game that has a health bar up to this point. The main objective getting moons is a blast since each moon either given to the player as an objective or is hidden for veterans to find while wandering around the kingdoms this game has to offer. Mario Odyssey is a great game that is only a few steps from perfect due to some missteps like the 2D sections, story and the life bar mechanics! Expand

Every world - called kingdom - is packed with details and gameplay, especially the transformations which replace the power up: Mario can use his cap to take control of various elements or ennemis. It’s technically beautiful, charming, innovative.

Nintendo made the formula a little bit different this time: the moons you collect can be easy or difficult depending on how far the player wants to go. There are so many... In other words, the player choose the difficulty. It can be frustrating, but the curious ones won’t have any problem looking around.

The game is enough to justify the Switch. It’s one of those industry changing games that you get every decade or so.

    The game is fantastic

Even my non game playing girlfriend is playing it

Its as easy or hard as you want it to be

Not going to give it a 10 as I don't believe any game can be perfect.... yet

Honestly never been a fan of Mario games but still got this when I got my Switch to see what the fuss was about.

Anyways, guess I'm a Mario fan now. This was incredible and so well balanced with fun stuff to do. There is literally no down time when you get bored. Nintendo really knows what they are doing.

If you aren't into searching every last corner of an area, this game isn't for you, or at least you wont get the full enjoyment. Some of the moons are just ridiculous, like the one that requires you to kick a specific rock 50 times, with no indication it has a moon. This is what really brings the game down. If these ridiculous moons were removed this game would easily get a 9 or 9.5. The core game isn't deserving of a 10, as many people will say it is. The hype has created an unrealistic vision of the game and so many people are blinded to their favoritism and bias towards the game.

The game is fun, but a lot of the best parts are hidden and hard to access. Instead of providing a fun challenge to get the moons, a lot of them are just scrounging every little corner of a map to see if, for example, one was obtained by sitting on the right bench. The few that have genuinely engaging challenges are hidden even more and unless you want to 100% the game you wont get to experience most of them. If you aren't going to, you will still like the game, but you wont get much out of it,, but if you are intending of doing every little thing in the game, you will love it.

The real game starts when it ends.

The level design is very refined, making every aspect of a level in Mario Odyssey important in finding new collectables. Mario Odyssey has a fun way of keeping players engaged in new content constantly, there are 3 final bosses and each provide a true challenge. The environments are absolutely beautiful with kicking soundtracks to go with them which causes me and a lot of players to be in the right mood for this game. Mario has a new gameplay feature which is throwing his hat at enemies to control them, this is a smart move because this opens multiple gameplay opportunities for each level. The levels before the final Bowser battle are truly entertaining, and the 2 secret levels that are unlocked after saving peach are true challenges, truly amazing.

The only thing that keeps this game from getting a perfect 10 is that they reuse a lot of bosses after Bowser is defeated, you have to fight each Broodal a total of 4 times in the game and it gets a little annoying, but this is my only major complaint.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
