Easily one of the most fun Mario releases in the franchise. Nintendo seemed to have approached Odyssey with just enough nostalgia mixed in with their new Cappy system. The writing for the NPCs was hilarious at times, and most of the levels are designed beautifully. Beating the initial game was easy enough, but farming the post-ending moons and making it to the additional worlds was another game in and of itself. It promotes replaying each world and collecting all of the challenging moons during the second playthrough, forcing you to master some of the more complex controls that you may not have had to use often the first time around. This game is amazing. I love the mechanics. Just like 64 and Sunshine, this game has amazing controls and moves that Mario can do. But, when you finish the game, there’s nothing much to do. You can get the moons, but there really isn’t any point for that.

Epic. Simply Epic. This game is the best Mario game ever. Super Mario Odyssey harkens back to Super Mario 64 as an open sandbox type game and this is what makes this game so great. The history is corrent and is graphically nice. The main game lasts 16h but, but it last a hundred hours, ore more, to collect all the moons.

Here is why. Mario feels perfect to control. There are so many options to move around massive, beautiful, and breathtaking locations like a colorful volcano made up food, a rusty greenhouse and deep scary forest controlled by friendly robots, the black and white cap kingdom, and even bower's castle is unique, having a Japanese/samurai theme. Mario moves perfectly, the controls are the best in any Mario game, and there is so much to see and do. Many mini games, like racing, playing volleyball, doing jump robe, racing tiny micro-machines, and so much more not counting the main collectible, moons. Like with Super Mario 64, you can collect the moons in (mostly) any order you choose. However this time Moons are much more common and you can collect them in many different unique ways like planting and watering seeds, completing an obstacle course, finding hidden treasure, getting a high enough score in a mini game, ground pounding in certain spots, solving a puzzle, using hint art, or even just finding them lying around randomly. However, this game's biggest feature is the capture mechanic. Instead of traditional power-ups, Mario can you his new companion Cappy to possess almost every enemy in the game to solve puzzles, defeat bosses, collect hidden moons, or even just for faster travel. Story missions are fun and varied, and you can even skip most of them if you so choose. This a speed runner's heaven, as there are so many tricks, secrets, and shortcuts to find and discover to shave seconds and make your run extra efficient. This is especially true with the amazing controls. If you are looking at getting into speed-running, this is the place to start. Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece beyond words, and if you have a Nintendo Switch it is a sin to not have this game in your library, physical or digital. Even if you somehow don't have a switch yet, this game alone should sell you on it. It sure did for me. Expand

Super Mario Odyssey is literally my favorite game of all time. It is really the successor to Super Mario 64 in almost every aspect. Like really, it does a lot of things so well. I've just finished the game (100%) for the second time and it's just that good.

Super Mario Odyssey is literally my favorite game of all time. It is really the successor to Super Mario 64 in almost every aspect. Like really, it does a lot of things so well. I've just finished the game (100%) for the second time and it's just that good.

The story of this game is simple and straight to the point. It is very easy to follow and it's not just like your generic Mario game. Sure, Princess Peach got captured again, but this time it's different. I won't get to details because spoilers, and I want this review to be as helpful as possible. It may not be as good as Galaxy 1, but I do appreciate the amount of effort put into the story itself.

Throughout the game you will go through a lot of kingdoms that have never been explored in any Mario game until now. Every kingdom gets the sense of freedom, platforming, fun... just right. Cappy is the new ally which will help you throughout the game. And he is just perfect. If F.L.U.D.D. from Mario Sunshine was good, Cappy is just perfect. The amount of stuff you get to do with him is incredible. Some people say he's broken, and I don't agree with them because 1 important reason. If the game wasn't designed around all these things he can do, sure, he would be broken, but... The game IS designed around Cappy himself. There a lot of places that Cappy can go over, and the game lterally congratulates you for doing those amazing jumps. And the capture mechanic is just... perfect. It is literally the evolution of power-ups in older Mario games, and I love it. The main collectables here are power moons. there are over 800 of these. Some are easy to get, and some are well hidden. Also there are these exclusive purple coins per kingdom that with them you can buy outfits, and also the fact coins DO matter in this game. I swear, this game i sooooo different from any Mario game, that is probably why I consider it my favorite game of all time. The graphics are pretty nice to look at and the music... phenomenal.

Even though it's my fav game, it does have some flaws. The motion controls (that are incredibly well done btw) are very stiff to use in handheld mode, and also that you don't get a lot for 100% this game. So U reccomend you to 100% this game if you're a hardcore Mario fan or just simply a Completionist.

There are a lot of stuff I haven't talked about but you get the point. Super Mario Odyssey is a must play. It is soooo different it's just soooo good. Hope you all try it because, believe me, it's worth 60 bucks.

Super Mario Odyessey is like Super Mario World's sister and Super Mario Land's brother. With the epic experience that Super Mario World brought, the addition of kingdoms from Super Mario Land, along with more enemies, and the 3D feel of Super Mario 64, this is a true masterpiece.

The games graphical style is varied and filled with whimsy, and the same can be said about the score. Almost everything about this game is pure perfection. Almost.
I only had one real gripe with my time with Odyssey. The role the motion controls play is far too prevalent. There is a setting to "turn off" motion controls but then you're advanced movement mechanics are essentially wiped out. I could very well be a bumbling idiot and just not be able to find button combinations for these mechanics, but, in my defence, those combinations should not be hard to find.
With all that said, Super Mario Odyssey is a milestone in modern gaming and will be revered for years to come. It is an instant classic.

Super Mario Odyssey is an awesome game, and it's a loveletter to everyone who's been playing Mario since back in the day. The controls and movement are smooth as butter, tight, and so satisfying. EachSuper Mario Odyssey is an awesome game, and it's a loveletter to everyone who's been playing Mario since back in the day. The controls and movement are smooth as butter, tight, and so satisfying. This game goes right up there with 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, taking the super fun 3d Mario mechanics and refining them, and then going all in on the level design and exploration elements. Each kingdom you visit has its own charm with so many things to discover and have fun with. The music, the graphics, the controls, the gameplay, it's all so so good. Each kingdom is completely full of content and someone going through for the first time will find dozens of hours in it to explore everything. No idea how they'll top this with the next 3d Mario.

There are a couple small reasons that my rating is a 9/10 instead of a 10/10. One is that there are some weird quirks to the motion controls. I found myself discovering moves I had no idea Mario could do well over halfway through the game because I moved the controller by accident, making Mario throw his hat a certain different way or something. It also seemed like there wasn't a way to do some of the hat throws without using motion controls which is a bummer - I found throwing the hat in a circle around you in particular to be very inconsistent and annoying to execute. If there's a way to do that without motion controls, I would have loved to know it for my playthrough of the game.

The other reason is that some of the kingdoms (like the Wooded kingdom) are absolutely amazing. They are full to the brim with enticing exploration opportunities, innovative level design, and just dripping with charm. I got absolutely lost in the Wooded Kingdom the first time I went there and just lost 3-4 hours running around doing whatever. Then there are other kingdoms that are... just a bit more bland. They're not bad, or boring, they're just not quite up to the level of some of the others. In these kingdoms, I was glad I was done with them by the time I got to the end so that I could get to better ones. It's not to say I had a bad time with any of the kingdoms, but some definitely outshine others.

Overall this is such an amazing game from Nintendo that takes everything that made 64 and Sunshine so awesome back in the day and refines it down to the last detail. This is a must-play game for everyone with a Switch.

This game is packed with challenges and stages that are super satisfying to blaze through once you get good with the complex jumps and bounces, yet accessible enough that a 6 year- old can play the game. I absolutely love how Nintendo rewards those players who choose to challenge themselves to reach places that look as though they aren't accessible, and rewards us with big shining piles of coins.

Every single kingdom also feels different, and you can always choose to travel the straight- forward path, or if you want to challenge yourself to be able to skip the more tedious parts. The bosses are a great example of this, where all of the bosses take several minutes to beat, but can be defeated in less than 30 seconds if you really know what you are doing. It is just so satisfying to skip the longer phases of boss fights, given that you dare to challenge yourself.

The kingdoms are also beautiful, and are large enough that your movement doesn't feel limited, but are not so big that the size slows you down. When this is accompanied by a great musical score, every moment of collecting power moons and searching for purple coins becomes amazingly fun.

The story itself, and core gameplay is not that great, however, and never require you to do anything more than a basic jump. It is such a shame that Nintendo didn't make this game a bit harder, and didn't encourage the players to challenge themselves more. I have recommended this game to countless people I know, and some have told me they didn't like it, as it was to easy and bare- bones, and I totally see how players feel this when they don't actively try to challenge themselves.

For those that do, however, this game is an absolute blast, and nearly perfect for a game centred around gameplay, rather than story.

This game deserves all the praise it gets and I think is genuinely the best 3D Mario game. This game does an excellent job at making you feel like a child again, playing one of your first games. I think most of the arguments made against this game are very weak. The 2 main ones I hear are, "it's to easy" and "it gets repetitive". For starters, its a game aimed at kids, what did you really expect? I wouldn't even say the game is a complete cakewalk, as some parts towards the end get genuinely hard and some moon puzzles can be tricky. Admittedly, a bit more challenge would be appreciated, but I expect easy gameplay from a Mario game. The other argument is it gets repetitive. If you simply complete the main story, that point does not apply at all. I feel it only gets repetitive for completionists. Which I did 100% the game because its that much fun. But hey, if you had to come up with 880 objectives, I think you may want to repeat a few. Again this game isn't a 100% masterpiece, it has some very very small issues. But I think its as close to a true masterpiece a Mario game has gotten. If you own a Switch, you have to own this game. Expand

Still the best Switch game to this date in my opinion. Where Zelda BotW has some slight issues here and there, Mario Odyssey just contains everything that you want from a perfect game of the series. The story is pretty subtle as always but it´s solid for a Mario game.
The cut scenes and the general graphic presentation is really well made and almost never has any frame drops.

The cut scenes and the general graphic presentation is really well made and almost never has any frame drops.
There are some worlds that stand out, but in general every single one is incredibly charming and detailed. Nintendo just let their creativity flow and came up with tons of fun ideas and secrets, that keep you busy for a long time, if you want to.
Some might say the game is too easy and yeah, you don´t have to be a pro to beat it. Even my sister did without that many struggles.
BUT that´s just the genius thing about the game design I think, because everyone can get through it in his own tempo and just enjoy himself.
There are definetly some quite challenging moments in the game, if you search for them. And if you found one, the perfect controls will never give you the feeling, that its the games fault that you´ve messed up.
I would call myself more a Zelda than a Mario Fan, but I really think, Mario Odyssey is even a better game than BotW. It has the potential, to ether create great childhood memories or to make you fall in love with the Mario Series again.

Oh i didn't told about the moons...the moons are like the stars in Mario 64, but in Mario 64 when you get a star, you go back to the hub world, but in Odyssey (since is a open map not a stage) no, you just collect the moon....and thats it, you use the moons like fuel to the Odyssey, a ship in a hat form, you use the Odyssey to travel to other Kingdoms and you can't travel without a certain number of power moons.
I won't tell spoilers because im a cool guy.

Oh and you use cappy to "capture"(Mario its actually taking control of their bodys) enemys to solve puzzles.

A wonderful game through, with each area feeling different and memorable on both aesthetic and gameplay aspects.
Not much of a story, but it is as you expect from a Mario game, not plot but lots of character to every little thing.
The music in this game is a bop. Highly climatic tracks that are fun to listen to even outside of the game, but also fit their moments tremendously.

Gameplay-wise, it's the best Mario has moved thus far. Cappy (the ghost in Mario's cap) makes for a great addition to moth movement and combat, as well as introducing the possession ability that is the main draw of this particular game over other Mario titles. Each enemy/obstacle that can be possessed and controlled offers unique abilities, or funny secrets, that add a lot to the game's enjoyment.
Overall this is a must-play for the Switch, no doubt about it, it's easily a masterpiece for the Mario series as a whole.

It’s not really a game I’ve enjoyed playing by myself though. And I’m not big on hunting for all the moons, so I’ve found myself playing other games. I beat the game with my nephew and we played for a while after it was beaten, but once you move on, there’s not much reason to come back. Lots of people love the game though, and the praise they shower it with is earned. To me, it just isn’t fun without a kid enjoying it with you.

If you’re a Mario fan, this is the Mario game to get on the Switch. If you’re looking for a game to play with a young kid, then I honestly can’t think of a better game than this one to do just that.

IAfter watching the Nintendo Switch reveal event in January of 2017, it was very apparent what were the two pieces of switch software everyone would be craving for. The legend of zelda breath of the wild, and Super Mario Odyssey. I bought my switch solely because of those two games. Breath of the wild immediately didn't disappoint, where as Odyssey is much different, for many reasons. I envisioned myself getting lost in the kingdoms and mechanics of odyssey after all of the fantastic trailers we were treated to, but sadly at first that never happened. I found myself having fun but not immersed. The cappy mechanic wasn't as engaging as I thought it would be. I beat the game fairly quickly and was finished. I decided the game was a decent 7 or 8 and was done with it. My intentions wasn't to go back and play the game but with a portable console sometimes you just need to pass the time. Much of 2019 I've found myself exploring all of the kingdoms and searching for as many moons as I could. I never did this during my first play-through and that was a big mistake. What I've learned in doing this is the moons aren't there as some worthless collectible just to pass the time and find on your way. The moons are there to encourage the player to explore the world and its mechanics. I've had a blast exploring each and every corner of these kingdoms to find my next moon. You instinctively check every box, every corner, to find those elusive moons. There's real enjoyment in trying something different or looking in the areas you've never looked and adding another one to the collection. And along the way you see the real beauty of the game in doing so. Super Mario Odyssey deserves its praise and is a true quality exclusive for the switch. As far as my opinion? It isn't perfect but it's so very close to that mark. Looking forward to seeing what's next in Mario's legendary journey, because if odyssey proves one thing, it's that's there's no telling where we'll go next. Expand

Very good game overall, but the Cappie possession gameplay mechanic was not my favorite, some may like it more? Also not a fan of the Mario hat attack in like a motion control move? Either make it motion control or don't! Galaxy games implemented motion controls well where it mixed traditional Mario gameplay with limited motion controls, but this game makes one of the main offensive moves a motion control option in a game that mostly doesn't use motion controls?

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
