An absolute treat for Switch owners alongside Zelda: Breath of the Wild that'll certainly give no one any second thoughts about picking up the new system just to experience it. Tight controls, beautiful soundtrack, inspired level design and probably one of the best (and not to mention unexpected) ending sequences I've seen in any Mario game to date. A definite 10/10*

Great Graphics, scaling game play difficulty, easy to learn hard to master, vivid soundtrack and great level design. Nintendo brought forth an incredible new addition to the mario 3d series and it is as great as everyone says. It deserves the Game of the Year award more than any other game out there.

This game has amazing variety and really makes you feel like you're straight back in the Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. I give this game a perfect score and I really recommend it!

Story: 4/5 This game wasn't meant to be huge on story, so I am going to lower the score to out of 5 for story specifically. Not too confusing, based on the end alone you most likely won't be disappointed. Just don't go in expecting the most complex story ever.
Level Design: 15/15 One of the major parts of the game. The game is linear if you want to just progress, but it seems huge despite the average sized maps if you are going to 100% or at least at your own pace.
Music: 10/10 Songs like Cascade Kingdom, Jump up Superstar, Wooded Kingdom, (Trying to avoid spoilers) Second to last Kingdom, and the ending song are just a few of the many good songs in this game. When you enter a 2D level, the 8-bit Remixes are just as good.
Battle System: 5/5 Lowered to 5 because it's simple but not confusing at all. With the capture ability you have many options for fighting. This is shown well in many of the unique boss fights in certain kingdoms.
Replayability: 10/10 Amazing replayability. However, if you 100%ed the game on your first run, it could remove some of it. You may want to replay using certain challenges, to fins more moons, to speedrun the game, try out different options etc.
Difficulty: 10/10 "The game is too easy" Yeah sure I want to see you attempt the Volleyball Challenge for 100 and the Final Level in the game. This game is easy if you want, and hard if you want. There are several easy moons but MANY more harder ones.
NPCs: 10/10 Really creative. From skeletons with hats to forks to humans, this game has many unique NPCs. The new bosses and enemies are also really unique and all have a different way to be beaten.
Graphics: 5/5 Graphics aren't everything, but this game has amazing graphics.
Length: 5/5 Again, the game is as long as you want it to be. You can breeze through the game, collecting just the amount of moons needed to progress through each kingdom (120 minimum are needed to complete the game, taking about 1-5 hours), or you can 100% the game, try to beat you record on one of the many challenges in this game, or simply take your time with it (about 45-72, 2-12, 15-25 hours respectively)
Exploration: 15/15 Out of 15 cause this is one of the main components of the game. The maps may be average-sized, but they seem HUGE. There are so many moons to be found. The game rewards you for being curious. There are MANY ways to get most of the power moons, and there are A LOT of moons.
Impact on the series: 10/10 Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are fan favorites for being an open, sandbox-like game with a lot to do. This game brings back those genres and it does not disappoint. With it being 7 years since the last sandbox style game, Super Mario Odyssey just leaves me wanting more.

Odyssey is pure joy. While not as emotionally deep as Galaxy, Odyssey is so absurdly fun. The worlds are deep and simplistic, while still maintaining a complex nature. The music is great, and the gameplay is better. Odyssey brings about that youth-like enthusiasm that we can't bring out in ourselves. Odyssey has a special whimsicality to it that will never be forgotten.

This is not a traditional Mario, its a pseudo open world game where you search for hidden moon stones. Some are hidden, some are in hard to reach places, some are quests and some are held by bosses. So far no mushrooms or fire flowers instead you have a form of hit points and throw your hat to attack like flower power.

As an adult the game is quite easy. having 3 or 6 hit points allows for many mistakes and even if you die the penalty is very small. There is no life limit and you re-spawn at your last checkpoint, which there are plenty of. In fact since its an open world game and you often have to back track to explore other paths, sometimes dying is welcome.

Boss battles so far have been quite easy. Deaths have only come from misplaced jumps into pits or "camera" deaths where you cant see whats going on because the camera angle is fighting you.

There is a "shake" controller mechanic that allows for special moves and auto targeting. There is no non-motion version of this control, even if you turn motion controls off. Fortunately so far the game is so easy that this mechanic can be considered optional. If you plan to use the shake mechanic it makes the game difficult to play in switch tablet mode and found my self struggling to balance the tablet on my lap while holding the controllers. Instead now I opt to play on the television

All in all the game is fun to play though not very challenging. If you are looking for a relaxing game that you can spend hours exploring then this is great. I feel this game does not stand up to Nintendo high expectations and doesn't provide an adult challenge. Its a good game but falls short of greatness.

Thus, an OK score of 7/10

Gameplay - Now this is the game's main strength, Mario games has always been the first in line in platforming/puzzle games and this game isnt different, the puzzles are awesome, many, unique and keeps you interesting until the end of the game. Its an added bonus that you have like 800+ moons to collect which makes it more worthwhile. In addition, I love how they somehow delved into semi open world genre which has different and unique worlds to explore. A very good mixture of 3d and 2d gameplays elements was executed in whole. It is also good that an addition of cappy usages was added also as well as its possesion/capture mechanic which gives you a chance to use enemies in game. All in all, a masterpiece in this aspect. A score of 10/10

Graphics - I love how the different worlds of Mario Odyssey is different and unique with each other and has different colors (though the colors looks plain and lazy.) Design though of the characters, enemies and npcs was for me is pretty below average as well. However, I love how the game is 60 fps and you could really enjoy it smoothly. Thus, a score of 8/10

Sound - I love the music of this game. I love its in game songs, the music of each and every world and the sound effects of its gameplay. Kinda childish but doesnt really affect it much. As to the character voice though like the zelda games are all awfully done with childish moans or scream. It is still stupid how after all this years Nintendo is still Lazy to hire voice actors to add identity to their characters. Therefore, a score of 7/10

Fun factor - A new scoring system on my review. Now despite all of what I have said above. I really enjoyed my whole experience in the game. Athough personally this game is much more easier and forgiving compared to its galaxy counterparts. It is still decent cause its fun. Regardles, personally it is one of my GOTY candidates for this year together with other great games like Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Divinity Original Sin II. Thus, a score of 10/10.

    Average score - 8.4

The soundtrack is phenomenal, possibly grammy-worthy. The sheer amount of collectibles found in the game will keep anyone coming back for more. Very few games have ever made me cry tears of joy at the ending; Odyssey is one of them. If I had any complaints about the game, it would be the story's length. But the good thing about that is that you can play it again and again. Super Mario Odyssey is the greatest video game of all time, and I can't give it a high enough score. -The new inclusion of outfits. It's like I'm in mod heaven. Some of the outfits in the game will give you goosebumps if you've played any other Mario titles before this

-The capture abilities. There are over 50+ captures, and man, do they provide gameplay variation. I'd had expected to avoid them due to having a limited moveset compared to Mario's renown ability of parkour, but that never seemed to cross my mind. It isn't a gimmick, it definitely improved my enjoyment of the game.

-Mario's moveset. It harkens back to the ol'64 days, and I love it. As you can probably already observe, people have broken the boundaries of this game with Cappy and still are rewarded for unorthodox gameplay. Nintendo truly tries to appeal to both a casual and hardcore audience, and it pays off beautifully.

-I have to admit, the best kingdoms are definitely the ones Nintendo did not show off.

    Negatives:

-In some ways, I feel like the *actual* platforming in Odyssey in the main kingdoms is slightly lacking. I know it's meant to be similar to 64 with that adventurous feel instead, but the Sand Kingdom, dear god, is far too vacant. I would prefer if Nintendo at least included more lumps of sand or at least some hurdles to force me to take advantage of Mario's moveset more, rather than rolling around everywhere.

-The background aesthetic is incredibly mundane in most of the secret-esque levels, akin to Sunshine. It's rather off-putting and makes me less inclined to want to play them.

-The broodal boss fights are just plain boring. The rest however, (like local bosses) are **** amazing. But that's mostly because they are unique (using captures exclusively) rather than just jumping on heads.

In other words, I'd say personal improvements for me would be that I think the kingdoms could be designed a bit better, otherwise I believe there should be more. Nintendo could definitely force you to be more creative with the capture abilities as well. They have untapped potential.

Again, this game took quite a few risks that are in their infancy for the Mario franchise, similar to BOTW for Zelda (where it nailed combat, over-world, health, scavenging and accessibility in roaming, but failed in puzzling variety and dungeons). So I don't expect perfection off the bat when it comes to innovation. I can definitely see any direct sequels to these titles easily improving on their respective formulae. Which is insane to perceive when these games are already almost rated 100 on Metacritic, implying they are already perfect.

The surprises from this game keep making you want to come back and collect as many power moons as possible to get all endings and there is plenty of variety when it comes to clothing Mario with the various unlockable outfits. The difficulty of levels and puzzles stays at a steady pace throughout the majority of worlds and those dealing primarily with story content, however, when you start getting into the harder puzzles, it will definitely leave you wanting to throw your Joy Con at your tv. Nintendo has put a lot into Odyssey to challenge players. The boss fights seem to be lacking though when pertaining to the "Broodals". They are smart addition to the line up of enemies Mario has come up with over the years, but the fights are boring, predictable, and leave you with a feeling of "Oh no, THESE guys again? The depth of collecting is huge with over 800 moons to collect and the powerings of the hat are admirable and fantastic. Controls are fluent and all around this is a top tier game for this holiday season.

I didn't think I liked Mario games anymore. The last one I played was Mario 64, and while I enjoyed it for a while, I've never gone back to it.

But Odyssey is kind of amazing. It plays like an updated version of Ocarina of Time, yet with Kirby-like power stealing mechanics. Brilliant decisions, both. We get a format we're familiar with, intuitive controls, and satisfying abilities.

The only negative thing I can think of is that after "completing" the game, you can go back and collect more moons from each stage, and that's not quite as fun as going through the stages for the first time. Overall, though, it's just incredible.

Before the Switch released Shigeru Miyamoto gave an interview in which he said Nintendo had "mastered the Unreal Engine" in regards to the development of Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, and you know what? He was right, because I've never played a Mario game that feels as good as this game does, nor have I ever played a *platformer* that feels as good to play as this game does. It's beyond all comparison, even to past Mario games.

I'll refrain from posting spoilers but it's just impossible to describe how much joy this game will bring to anyone who's grown up alongside Mario. I've played over 30 hours thus far and have beaten the main storyline as well as discovered the additional post-game worlds, but even after all of that I still have a hundred (or more!) moons to collect. It's absolutely staggering how much care, love, and thought was put into this game.

At this point I'm genuinely concerned Nintendo will never be able to top it, because never in my life have I enjoyed anything as much as I've enjoyed Super Mario Odyssey.

The controls where perfect and I felt at no time that when I died it was the game's fault when I died I felt like I made a mistake. Speaking of controls I found the motion controls pretty fun as well but this is probaly because I used the sperated JoyCons and not the ProControler so if you want to use a ProControler then you probally wont enjoy them as much the ideal way to play is with the JoyCons. There is something that gives the games controls the extra step to being perfection is Cappy. In this game your new sidekick is the hat ghost thing Cappy. With a press of the Y button or a flick of the JoyCon you can toss out your Felt Friend and grab coins and kill small baddies. The reason he only kills small foes is because when thrown at a normal sized enemies is that when Cappy is thrown at them he will "Capture" them, but its more like possesion because you go inside there bodies and take control of there brains. This adds a fun new twist onto gameplay and makes some fun boss battles based around these Captures. Another thing you can do with Cappy is when he is thrown you can dive onto him which will give you a bounce then you can dive again to get some serious style points this can used to get to seemingly impossible areas. How about the worlds you use these controls in well they are fairly compact with tons of moons they really remind me of Banjo Kazzoie but with like way more jiggys they are fun to traverse and have memorable NPCs and locals. All around I would say Mario Odyssey is my favorite game of 2017 even more than Breath of the Wild Expand

Nintendo are amongst the best in the business when it comes to producing quality games and that's especially true when those games involve wide open world's full of content that will satisfy everyone from kids to self proclaimed hardcore gamers.

Super Mario Odyssey takes the best bits from previous Mario games and mashes them altogether in this latest instalment. The first thing to strike me was just how gorgeous the game looks. Nintendo continue to amaze me with what they can do with the power available in the Nintendo Switch.

I'll not delve too deep into the story because it's a Mario game and by now I'm sure e all know roughly what the plot will entale. It's a fun story though that develops at a good pace. I'm going to concentrate on the gameplay because that's where this game really shines.

Super Mario Odyssey takes place over a number of different kingdoms each having it's own unique feel and design. There's much more detail than you might first notice and there's plenty for you you to explore. The game world's have been expertly created as you might expect from Nintendo but they're just so clever in how they're done it's staggering.

Super Mario Odyssey is a 3d game and the control scheme compliments it and works brilliantly, especially with the joycons. You can throw cappy (your new sidekick) by gesturing with the controllers and its on point with its responsiveness. Theres a wide variety of creatures for you to possess and doing so will help you to collect the in game currency and power moons that you require.

Speaking of in game currency, each kingdom has its own unique currency that you can use to buy outfits. They're plentiful and rewarding. You feel a great sense of satisfaction when you change Mario's clothes to better suit his surroundings.

One of the best parts of the game by far is the use of 2d, 8-bit style sections. You'll see the iconic green pipes going into a wall. Walk into the pipe and you're in a 2d section where you can enjoy a throw back to the 80' and 90's. It's a stroke of genius and is my personal favourite part of the game.

Super Mario Odyssey has been picking up perfect score from all quarters of the media and I'm sure you're wondering if it's really that good. In short yes, yes it is. The game is as near perfect as you could hope for and is just so much fun to play. Since the game landed on my doorstep it's been a race to get to the Switch as my kids can't stop playing. This is surely a contender for game of the year alongside Nintendo's other big success, Breath of the Wild. It's been an amazing year for Nintendo and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

I have finished the game and realized I have only collected 1 third of the moons. I wanted to say many things about this game, but no words would make justice. Get it now and enjoy!

I never had a chance to play Sunshine or dabble with the N64 cult classic, so I went into this Mario without the glasses of nostalgia or any prescribed expectations. All I wanted is a neat, fun, interesting 3D platformer, that will require of me precision controls, mastering the many movement options, solving some in-space puzzles and be enjoyable in the basic game loop.

And oh boy, Super Mario Odyssey delivers in spades. I was truly shocked about how well paced and tightly packed the game is, when still managing to offer something new pretty much behind every corner!

First, the plot – It’s as rudimentary as you can expect from a Mario game. Big B kidnaps Princess P, this time to marry her in style. He has henchmen, who are silly. You, the plumber-jumper, must save the princess, but this time you have a magical buddy who wants to save his sister (in form of a Tiara). That’s it. Your goal? Chase the big Baddie through various maps, gather LOTS of same thing to fuel your travel. Simple, but that’s fantastic, and here’s why – It gives clear goals for every stage and shiny, singular objective for your whole journey. You don’t get muddled down in your fun, you don’t worry or bother about character arcs or some big turmoil. You jump between beautifully crafted maps to tackle the same problem in vastly differing way. You know there is certain amount of Things To Find, but gosh, each level varies with enemy types, environmental traps and game mechanics needed to cross it. And it works fantastically because…

The map design is mind-blowing, to a point, that I believe it will be taught in game design courses. The game is not Open World. It’s just old stage-after-stage gameplay. But that’s amazing, because every stage differs VASTLY from another. In music, style, visuals, but also in core gameplay mechanics needed to traverse it, focusing on different skills and different approach. Some levels are superbly vertical, some display tremendous amounts of hidden passages and nooks to find out. Others are riddled with hazards to cross, while other are vastly open, and require a curious eye to look for irregularities to spot. Every level feels like a breath of fresh air, always delivering something new to pick a player curiosity to explore and experiment. Maps are also very tight. They are not small, most of the time, but they are also not vast and empty. In fact, every corner of the map is an offering of a new challenges, both minor and major.
Another beautiful thing is the scope of game difficulty. It’s organic, in a way, that you can finish the game with minimal challenge. Each level requires you to find a certain amount of Power Moons. And to get them, you really must do a series of rather easy tasks, most of the time. BUT each stage consists of so many more Power Moons than you require, and its unique currency… And to gather them all, you will face challenges that are much, much harder, and will truly test your patience and great skill in mobility.

So, the gameplay is stellar. It’s fun, it’s as challenging as you want it to be, it’s always fresh stage after stage. And it looks amazing – it’s colorful and cheerful, of course, but every level feels as its own creation, conveying the theme and mood beautifully, with spectacular music helping greatly to set an atmosphere.

Lastly, it’s important to notice the astonishing controls. Nintendo really nail this stuff, and Mario moves with pinpoint, godlike precision. Every jump, run, roll and bounce is so precise, you can execute some stellar moves to cross long vaults, narrow lines or other hard mobility tests in game. And playing on two Joy-Cons really shows how smartly they used the motion of their pads. It’s fun and precise, and I love it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do I even begin. After spending 3 days playing and paying my life into this game, and just starting my second playthrough, I am extremely pleased to say that Nintendo is on a roll this year with their newest podium console. Both this game, Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reinforce that fact and despite the Switch's multiple flaws and technical issues since its launch back in March, I truly believe this year is one of if not Nintendo's best years of gaming since the iconic year of 1985. Though onto the game. After my full playthrough and grinding in getting as much moon's as possible, I can definitely consider this game (along with Breath of the Wild) a masterpiece. From the start to finish, this game truly represents an exciting, creative and outstanding (as the title suggests) odyssey. Our Italian plumber friend does not stop with his adventures in defeating Bowser and saving Princess Peach ("WAIT, Why is that so familiar, OH YEAH!"), though this time Bowser seems more serious and intentional on marrying Princess Peach than I have seen him in almost every Mario game including Sunshine. Mario continues to impress me with his cunning and practical skills when it comes to completing these courses. Despite this being considered an open world Mario game, it would not be a 'Super Mario' game without those courses to further progress through the game. However the way that they have been implemented in this style is very very (about 10 more times) creative. Every single kingdom despite most being fairly small feature multiple courses, puzzels and secrets that you come upon when exploring whether it is on purpose of intentionally. And somehow, the game was even able to implement the classical 2D style courses that Mario enters via a pipe inside a wall, cliff, mountain etc. And even better, they didn't just put all of these mini-courses in for the sake of it, most of the time you will need to get through them if you really want to progress through the game and collect enough moons to power up the odyssey and travel to the next kingdom. On paper it may sound a little repetitive, but in reality it is not. Thats what I mean when I refer this game as creative. Every single kingdom is different and unique in its own way with multiple different courses and secrets scattered around the small kingdom where some can consist of up to 50 MOONS! Exploring further into the kingdom is up to the player however. Collect all the moons that you need from completing the main (3D) courses and defeat one of Bowsers mini bosses and move to the next kingdom, or keep exploring it like I did. When I did this I was and still am extremely ecstatic and intrigued of the amount of secrets and hidden courses to find all those moons. I haven't discovered this much secrets in a video game world since Assassin's Creed. Even Breath of the Wild wasn't this wild with its secrets. And Mario is not alone Oh No. He has a new companion! Not his brother Luigi, or Toad or anyone like that but a cap. Though not just any old or just an advanced version of Mario's own red cap (which is destroyed at the beginning) but it is an actual character. A ghost who has the physique of a hat who has many powers which include harming enemies when thrown, shapeshifting into a different type of cap and the ability that not only makes him stand out but make the entire game stand out over all the Super Mario games is being able to possess creatures such as goombas, frogs, wigglers and DINOSAURS, or enemy machines such as Bullet bills to literally transform Mario into a rocket or a tank to blow up everything (In some way). Without cappy, this Super Mario game would not be the Odyssey that it really is, even at one point in the game where cappy is abducted and you're forced to recue him without using any of his powers. Because of both the team and relationship Mario and Cappy develop throughout the game, this was not an easy thing to do as you're forced to get through obstacles using Mario's own (old school) abilities to rescue Cappy. It also proves that Cappy is not only a great companion but a necessity for Mario. Together the two of you are travelling through all the kingdoms, collecting all the moons, finding and discovering new things/secrets and defeating Bowser and saving Princess Peach (OBVIOUSLY) along with saving Cappy's little sister who is being used as Princess Peach's tiara and is most likely her companion. In conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey is yet another Mario game that does not disappoint in any way and another amazing Nintendo game to promote the Switch console and put Nintendo back on top after the failed launch of the Wii U. With this games surplus amount of secrets and hidden courses/puzzles, its content for the games main progression and all the versatility at your disposal with Mario and Cappy makes this game (along with Breath of the Wild) the best game for the Switch and the best Super Mario game since Galaxy released 10 years ago! So what does Mario Odyssey offer what other Mario games do not? Well the first most notable is the new 2 player feature, which allows players to enjoy the Mario experience with friends and family! The setup is that similar of Mario Sunshine which was an absolute ground breaking game in the series, and a much improvement on the big seller Mario 64.
The special ability to over take enemies like Hammer bro, Goomba, Bullet bill and even a T-Rex...... A FRIGGIN' T-REX!!! An ability introduced into the game makes it really enjoyable to play, and it's good to see from Mario Sunshine that Nintendo EDP have come up with innovative ways to keep Mario fresh with a change of ideas by involving these abilities as apart of a story.

Now I use the term "story" loosely as Mario doesn't really have a story, well a good one anyway. Now if like me you're thinking "who buys a Mario game for the story?" then I can level with you, but the fact that they have tried to implement a story (and a weak one at that) tells me that they didn't really take in consideration how weak it really was. It's so unnecessary, that you don't even need to pay any attention to it, the ending is only stupid anyway.

It's far from an amazing game, but if you want fun and easy game time, then this is a certain purchase for you.

The bosses were pretty easy in general, but I like the fact that you need to be smart to hit them a few times instead of easily hitting them 20 times. I completed the main story in about 8 hours (about 80% of purple coins and 261 moons). I was not looking everywhere, but I was looking. There is a power moon and/or a mini-game every 2-3 minutes if you look properly. I really like collectibles, but 999 power moons is just too much lol 250 would have been more than enough. I think I will replay it to try to gather 500 moons, but I am not sure yet. The music is good as usual, but nothing incredible. I personally played with the detached joy-con and I really enjoyed the experience!

The gameplay is fun and intuitive... that said there are like 3 moves that you cannot use on the unless you use motion controls; cap throw down, cap throw up, and homing cap... yes you can use it with your controllers attached to the grips but it would've been nice to have every move mapped onto the controller. there is also the way Mario does a spin cap attack... you can do it without motion controls but it is not as instant.

Now the positive, as I said above, the controls very intuitive and fun. once you get used to the main controls (which won't take long) your up and running and playing the game. like most, all Mario games the controls are super tight and fun... it will make you fall in love with Mario and Nintendo again.

    Graphics:
The game runs at a fluid 60fps throughout the whole game as far as I know... there might have been frame dips but they were so negligible I didn't notice them. I did, however, notice the antialiasing but to run this game at 60fps and smoothly I think it is forgivable.

    FunFactor:
The fun factor of the game is out of this world... the main game itself is super easy... but that is not where this game shines... the game shines in its exploration, Nintendo gives you massive worlds to play in... I mean huge worlds (except for the few little ones scattered in the game for story or tutorial reasons). it is like Nintendo built each person a bunch of playgrounds to just explore and have fun in... of for that I say thank you Nintendo.

Yes, you can breeze through the game in a few hours and be done with it... but if you want more out of the game you need to delve deeper (use tricks and advanced moves)... you will need to work for some of these moons. but if you are inexperienced or a casual gamer, there are plenty of moons to find randomly in the world.

so to end my review, if you have a switch, pick up the game, if you don't buy a switch and get the game... if you can't try to get someone to buy you a switch and this game lol it will be well worth it.

Like me, you're scrolling through this and are seeing 10, 10, 10, ..., 10. it goes on.
This is why I created an account; to give newcomers an UNBIASED review of this game.

Yes, I play many, many games not limited to just one console and I love Nintendo and Mario games.

    First, who are you?
    Yes, you!
Don't just look at the scalled up reviews of fanboys and fangirls, see the 10/10 score and thing, "I'm going to love this game! I have to buy it!"

Stop, just stop. WHO are you?

    Do you seek any challenge?
After playing open world games do you have an unrealistic expectation that this game will be immersive?
Are you looking for story, for reason, for thinking outside the box?

If you are a person which greatly appreciate the above, only rose tinted glasses will keep ou from being disaapointed in this game. Because, if you are that person, you should be dissapointed.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is an underwhelmingly easy game devoid of any real push to continue playing and drive you forward. There is, of course, no story and the environments could not be less immersive; obstacles appear to be cut-n-pasted there, 'just cause'. The worlds are VERY small and disjointed.

So is Mario Odyssey bad? Absolutely not!
BUT, it depends on WHO you are.

Are you seeking a game with a playful setting and gorgeous art-style? Are you looking for a game which you can pick up and play after a long days work? are you looking for a game accessible to anyone and enjoyable to anyone? Are you seeking a game to pander to your rediculous side and creativity (only in art-style)?

If so, this is the game for you. You will love it.

    A few pointers overall:
Mario is a beautiful, fun and creative game which everyone can enjoy. If you play any sort of game even semi regularly though, you'll fell like a god playing it. The puzzles are completely underwhelming and predictable, and the only time you'll die will be from a misplaced jump.

This game is very surprisingly small. The worlds you go to are very inconsistent. Most are very small and do not excite you; they are a chore and bring down the quality of the game. Other worlds, however, are amazing and are definitely the right size. Unfortunately, these worlds are few and far between. Don't expect to play the game longer than 25 hours before you feel you should put it down and play something else. Multiplayer is quite a gimmick.

Regardless of who you are, this game will never reach 10/10 if you are being unbaised.
It's important to think critically and fairly.

Should you buy it??? That's why you're here isn't it???

It depends on who you are!

It is a fun game. I can say that. I enjoyed it.

I love the controls. A lot of people dislike the controls but I find them very easy to work out and use. I played with the detached joy cons as that's what the game recommends and I like that style of play anyway. The motion controls and "HD" rumble were fabulous and to my surprise really added to the game.

Overall it's a great must-have Switch game and my advise to anyone who hasn't yet played it: Go slowly. Take it all in. Explore each world. I know you want to get to that next kingdom, but it's more fun to go slowly.

These collectibles were used for progressing in the game and collecting all of them would give you a special bonus. Mario Odyssey's collectibles are Moons, and there are (from what I've seen) 999 of them in the game. However, about half of them are very easy to get. Still, a lot of the Moons are really fun to get, sometimes requiring you to solve a puzzle, beat a boss, or do some sort of platforming challenge. Getting all 999 Moons may seem like a pain but the design and music make the game much more enjoyable while hunting for moons. The music in this game is phenomenal, but that goes without saying. The Nintendo Switch cant run SUPER strong games, but the game is still beautiful and pleasing to look at. The colors and graphics make the game very appealing to look at, sometimes making me forget I have 450 Moons left to collect...The story, while not groundbreaking, is certainly a step forward for Mario. Peach is back to being a damsel in distress, but thats not TOO bad. The game opens with Mario and Bowser already fighting, and Mario is blasted off the side of the ship, landing in the Cap Kingdom where he meets Cappy, who posesses Mario's hat and is now able to be used. Cappy is a joy to use. Capturing and controlling enemies is a really great mechanic. Cappy can also be used for platforming, as you are able to jump on him. Moving around in this game is so much fun. A lot of people say Mario Sunshine has some of the best movements in the series, and I agreed until I played this. Mario can roll, dive, ground-pound jump and spin jump now. It feels really nice to move around. Nintendo certainly has outdone themselves this time, and I'm happy to say, so far, Mario Odyssey is my game of the year. Expand

Super Mario Odyssey is the freedom of movement of 64, the bizarre charm of Sunshine, the spectacle of Galaxy, and the exploratory collection of the Banjo-Kazooie series rolled into one. The main campaign is designed to be easy enough to get through for pretty much anyone, while offering an exorbitant amount of challenging optional content for platforming veterans. The movement and utility of everything you possess through the Cappy mechanic is nearly interesting enough to be a game all on its own. Super Mario Odyssey tries to be all things to all people, and in my opinion, it's the only game to ever succeed at such a daunting undertaking. Expand

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
