This game is really amazing. The movement is nice and the gameplay is fun. However, after playing through the game a couple times, it can feel a bit repetitive or boring. But the best thing about this game is the speedrunning. Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best games for speedrunning, and even I started to speedrun it to.

Good ass game. I like the open world value in it, and has tons of replay value. I always love looking for new places to find all the moons out there. I'll definitely be checking this out more often in the future!

Very charming, very addicting, very well-made. It was cool to experience a 3D Mario made in HD, 60fps, and modern lighting. The problem is that about 97% of this game was not challenging at all.

Out of 880 moons, maybe 15-20 put up a challenge. Moons lying everywhere: In the dirt, in the grass, under rocks, buying them with coins (why?). Not many moments that raise your blood pressure.

Even the special level was a long string of easy segments. The hard-mode bosses is what should've been the normal.

Mario's movement is the most mistake-forgiving and easy to execute to date. Controlling creatures with the cap was great, but so many missed opportunities to do cool challenges with them.

Balloon World also punishes you for being too good. People don't bother with hard balloons because the risk-reward and ranking system favor the easy ones.

Overall it's GREAT if you consider it more of an adventure game that won't scratch that action-platforming itch. This Mario game is more Zelda-like than Breath of the Wild, which went the survival crafting route. Devs will change a franchise to a completely different genre and get praised for "innovating".

In the end, Odyssey is accessible for the Animal Crossing audience and recommended for beginners. Mario 64 remains KING.

Pretty good. Good graphics, a lot of replayability, chalenging but not too hard... The gameplay, in my opinion, was oriented towards experts, many things were hidden and impossible to find without a guide, and the art style was bland.

nintendo uses this really jewish and lazy technique called if its not broken don't fix it what i mean by that is nintendo recycling almost everything from previous games like bosses needing 3 hits to die and they did took features from mario 64 and mario galaxy although they did add some new stuff like new and refreshing bosses and awesome good looking maps but even after all the new stuff it felt like i was playing another typical mario game that except for the hat ghost didn't put anything new there were cool moments in this game like the wanna be new york kindom and a dragon boss and the ending boss (bowser) but except for that they always throw at you these team rocket wanna be bunnies that work for bowser and you fight them almost the whole game again there are bosses that aren't them but most of the bosses are these 4 bunnies and i really don't understand why there are no power ups like i understand that you can just possess a monster and get its powers but still even one power up could make the game better after you finish the game there is endgame and the game asks you to collect a lot of moons and i really mean a looot of them but the reward you get for it is awful you just re battle boswer and at the end you get a thank you and some fireworks which is really stupid so don't bother to 100% the game because there is no satisfying reward awaiting for you another thing i don't understand is the co op in this game because one of your friends plays the hat ghost and the other mario basically meaning that the one that plays mario is doing all the work while the other that plays the hat ghost does nothing and sometimes just watches

At the end i did enjoy this game and there were moments where i wanted to just turn of the switch because they were repetitive but the game is a cool time waster and its not serious at all so you can take it anywhere i give this game a 8/10 i do recommend it but after the price drops a little bit

This game is pure platforming fun. Each level requires you to go through the level and acquire moons to get to the level. Simple, but the level design is so good you’ll go moon hunting far beyond the required number. There are many costumes and collectibles to go after. Possibly the best Mario 3D game, loads of fun here.

Super Mario Odyssey is perhaps the greatest Mario game I've ever played. It's a must have for any switch owner, and if you don't have a switch, this should be the game that sets you over the edge to get one.

First there are the superficial stuff, looks, sounds, smells, tastes etc. The visuals are so wonderfully stylized, ditching the "plastic" vibe from 3D world and Mario + Rabbids
Super Mario Odyssey is perhaps the greatest Mario game I've ever played. It's a must have for any switch owner, and if you don't have a switch, this should be the game that sets you over the edge to get one.

First there are the superficial stuff, looks, sounds, smells, tastes etc.

The visuals are so wonderfully stylized, ditching the "plastic" vibe from 3D world and Mario + Rabbids (which are still great in their own right) for a more realistic - yet still cartoon-y feel. There's so much polish and flair, yet it still remains technically and mechanically accurate. I don't have much more to say for this one, but just know that they're fantastic!

The soundtrack is bar none the best in any Mario game to date, with just about every song perfectly matching it's environment, while being great as standalone songs too! The obvious highlight being Jump Up! Superstar, which has quickly become one of my favorite video game songs. And the sound design is as high quality as you would expect from a Nintendo game, with quite a few being taken from previous installments. Not that it's a bad thing, of course.

The story is about what you'd expect from a Mario game. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and mainly only exists to tie up the whole experience, but that's okay! You don't play Mario games for the story, so I can't say that it was a disappointment. It's fine. I'd quicker say it was above average, than below.

Then there are the Controls, which are by far the best in the series.

Mario's main move-set controls so smoothly, with new moves like the roll - a great and satisfying way to get around quickly. Then there's the ground pound jump, which DID originate in 3D world, but given that games more linear structure, it wasn't particularly helpful. Now though, it's the easiest way to get the most out of your jump. Then there are returning moves, like the triple jump, which is the most forgiving to preform it's ever been, and the dive, which we'll talk more about later. The only casualty this time would be the side flip, which is a bit harder to do now that 8-directional movement is gone, but isn't much of a problem after the first hour or two.

This, is the best new addition to Odyssey - Cappy. Cappy is like a cross between the punch from 64, F.L.U.D.D. from sunshine, and the luma from galaxy. You can throw him on the ground as an attack, or in the air as a course corrector, then use the aforementioned new and improved dive to jump onto Cappy, then throw him, and dive again. This simple move set opens up a HUGE range of possibilities, in fact there have already been discoveries of incredibly precise shortcuts, some intentional, some not.

The motion controls are where things get a little bit controversial though. I personally think they were handled pretty well, not great, but just fine. Shaking the joy-con/pro controller allows you to roll faster, use a homing attack with Cappy, and all around play more efficiently; but at no point are you required to use them. The only problem is that shaking the entire system in handheld mode doesn't feel too great, and thus you always feel like your at a disadvantage when using said mode. Though unless you're doing a speed run, it really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Finally, the most important part, the gameplay.

Mario Odyssey goes back to the style of 64 and Sunshine. Instead of going the galaxy route, where there are tons of levels, all being linear platforming challenges, containing a couple of stars, there are a lot fewer, open worlds, each containing quite a few of the games main collectibles, power moons. Dozens of these guys are scattered all across every kingdom, some you get for solving puzzles, some for exploration, and some for completing challenges.

Now time for the main game-play "gimmick" of Odyssey, being the ability to capture enemies. It's amazing how they managed to make almost all of them feel so great to control. Each kingdom has it's own few capture-able enemies; they don't drag on with any of them either, they're always quickly moving on to the next one before the previous one gets stale. Throughout the game they make you use every capture in a plethora of unique and creative ways, forcing you to know the ins and outs of how each one works.

In conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey is a blast from beginning to end. I'd have to give it a 9.8/10, but seeing as how I have to choose between a 9 and a 10, I opted for 10. While I don't think it deserves a 10 per-say, (but what game does?) giving it a mere 9 would be criminal. Go get this game right now.

The game's a pretty good platformer, yes, but besides some new and inventive landscapes (the Luncheon, Ruined, Snow and Metro Kingdoms), and brilliantly handled in-game camera, this game just feels like a babified Mario Galaxy. With blander environments that are either too blocky or flat, many Power Moons being located in easy-to-find areas (even just being available to BUY with the in-game currency, meaning you can just grind for coins to get them), a FEW good songs in the soundtrack with the rest being quite forgettable and barely that much difficulty besides the Dark and Darker sides of the Moon (two places that you can visit after beating the main piss-easy game might I add) I don't think this game lives up to games like the Galaxy Duology, or even Sunshine or 64 (despite being a successor to the latter two games). Odyssey is an instant classic and alongside BOTW an essential Switch title.

I still remember how in awe I was when i played Mario 64 on the N64 as a teenager, Mario Odyssey really reminds me of that game, it really is a true follow up to Mario 64 and while due to the times that initial awe is a little harder to achieve over my playthrough a similar awe developed for Mario Odyssey, with the 2d sections the HD rumble and motion controls and the fluid and creative movement of Mario and the possibilities each world holds. I wish the story was more rung out. I hate how most of the bosses are just re appearances, and that the story is able to be complete in 24 hours. However after the story there are still Kingdoms to find! and if you cant find any power moons, just go to the hat shop and buy 10, 100 coins each.

So far, this is definitely my favorite Mario game of this last decade. It keeps most of the mechanics from classic Mario games but improved in almost every way. The wide variety of movements not just remember the Mario 64 times but brings back the feeling of challenge to clear the levels missing in some of the latest entries.

Of course now it's even more pretty! the visuals are simply attractive and beautiful. For sure the best looking visual mario game you'll find on the market.

However the mario gameplay style in this game is quite unique and genius at the same time by using your cap you can use the action "capture" to for example be in control of a goomba or even a cheep cheep, I mean wow... I've always wanted to be one of those, also who would've imagined that you could even be in control of the humans it's very interesting and very exciting on what this capture action can do and gives us nintendo switch players a brand new way to play and explore new things.

Mario is trying to save Princess Peach from Bowser as Bowser is trying to marry her the plot is actually a little different although it's still the same "save peach scenario" which still works as you have to fight through multiple boss battles although I feel as if it's quite easy to beat them but overall I find the game so easy to just explore and have fun it's the most exciting game in years. This is a true 3D mario game that's for sure, I recommend picking it up as you'll have hours of fun with this and explore and find all those power moons, if you don't have a nintendo switch right now this is the perfect excuse to get one.

Some have complained about the graphics being low res however even when playing docked on a 4k TV I struggled to be over critical of the graphics especially when I'm hyper focused on gameplay the story is compelling and if you are a completionist this is the next game for you as there are so many extra hidden power moons in each level than the ones needed to move on to the next world.

This game also gave me major nostalgia back to super Mario 64 from my childhood as soon as I put the cartridge in it felt instantly familiar. So if you loved that game or any of the other super mario 3d exploration games like sunshine or galaxy then defiantly give this a whirl you won't regret it and you'll find yourself like me wondering where the last 8 hours went!

To sum up this really is a killer app for s switch and hopefully helps establish switch to stay around for a while and shift some more systems this Christmas. also hopefully it attracts some attention from 3rd party dens to make some more epic game for this awesome little console.

As I've stated before, I love most of the kingdoms like the Metro Kingdom and the Snow Kingdom was a very pleasant and better than expected kingdom too. I also like the art style, being the typical Mario art style (so not ultra realistic 4k), it doesn't necessarily feel 'kiddy' like Mario is stereotyped to be, I've never really believed Mario is a childish game, however, others do... especially those ignorant cool kids all over the place. Anyway, I got a off track, as I was saying I like the unique little challenges given to us, they're fun and simple. The boss battle for the majority of the game are a little on the easy side, however, gives Cappy a lot of use. I'll also like to mention the new companionship between Mario and Cappy being absolutely great and giving us more creative and fun puzzles and ways to play.

The reason why I didn't give it a 10/10 is because I believe it's a bit short and a few kingdoms I was slightly disappointed with, especially the Cascade Kingdom. Reasons being I expected it to be a large challenging kingdom nearer to the end. However, I was left disappointed to see Nintendo didn't do more with it when they could've done countless things to make it better.

Overall, a great game, worth the money I spent, fun and creative. GG Nintendo, you've defeated me and my money again. Definitely a competitor for Game of the Year 2017 behind The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A breath of fresh air from Nintendo, they have to win GOTY.

At first when Nintendo showed Mario Odyssey I was worried because of the "look". It had a more realistic and less bright and artsy vibe. At first I assumed it was because using the UE4 engine and trying to give it that "new" feel. But I was very wrong and the game has so much going on and the art-style may be the best part of the game for me personally. As of just finishing the main plot..At first when Nintendo showed Mario Odyssey I was worried because of the "look". It had a more realistic and less bright and artsy vibe. At first I assumed it was because using the UE4 engine and trying to give it that "new" feel. But I was very wrong and the game has so much going on and the art-style may be the best part of the game for me personally. As of just finishing the main plot.. Its time to give my take. And it is filled with almost zero complaints. Nintendo is always trying something fresh but not make things awkward and Cappy is a genious addition which allows so much freedom and abilities I never thought I would want in a Mario adventure... But now I cant live without!!

Visuals: Amazing to say the least.. The way Nintendo is doing this FPS optimization with games like Odyssey and Splatoon 2 is something I really enjoy. Keeping a 60FPS on the action in game is very nice and adds to the overall look and feel. The worlds are stunning.. some take a more realistic vibe with real world creatures/humans.. while others are filled with gorgeous ice caverns, temples, candy worlds.. and so much more. Costumes are a blast to grab and while they are mostly cosmetic, some open events and secrets. Simply put the game is what anyone should expect from Mario and the minds over at Nintendo.

Gameplay: 60 FPS achieved with Nintendo's fluctuating progressive meter.. using this method as stated above makes not only a more smooth gameplay experience but adds to the visuals as everything is fluid. Mario moves with all the classic abilities and even adds some new combos off classics such as the butt pound. All Kingdoms offer new gameplay mechanics with the use of Cappy and some are genious. Controls are really spot on and mario feels really well when controlling using either the joy-cons attached or unattached gives you extra motion control options. I chose to use the pro controller and turn off motion controls in the options. I still had to use motion shaking for climbing poles and such.

Sound: Sound is very well done. Everything you would come to expect from a major Nintendo release. The main Odyssey song even has the lyrics printed on the inside cover of the game case. There are many throwback and classic tunes about the kingdoms... Enjoy and check every area.

Overall 10/10 Mario Odyssey is a game that will take around 15 hours to check out most Kingdoms but the levels have so much to collect that you cant possibly see everything as beating the final boss will unlock each Kingdom and another anywhere from 10-50 or more moons are available to collect all with new characters and puzzles. GO GET THIS NOW!!

I am not a "critic." I am a gamer. I have played every major Mario game since the original Mario Bros. 1983 arcade game (the NES version, anyway), and then from then on the Goomba squashing Mario we came to know and love as the first ever mascot of gaming (after Pac-Man, of course - though I wasn't around then).

After playing the Galaxies, I did not think Nintendo could ever make me love Mario again. Between Sunshine and Galaxy 1 and 2, the traditional Mario (Mario Bros. Wii) fell by the wayside for me... Sure, it was fun, but it just didn't have the creativity of the other three games. And then the Wii U happened... and everyone hoped for a Galaxy 3..... and we got a Mario Bros. Wii reiteration, and then a "3D" gimmick of that same formula. These were fun, sure, but they were a sort of mundane fun... something you did not really feel like playing again after winning.

(I personally think the Wii U was Nintendo's grace period to figure out what they needed to do, with EVERY franchise, including Mario, because they were screwing up. And boy am I glad they figured it out.)

Mario Odyssey is the game that could not be a Wii U game. This much is clear. The fluidity of animation without frame drops, the wonderful controls, the seamless flow of throwing Cappy and using him and jumping on him, the wonderful return to actually great music... Look, the truth is, as you play this game, you will find not just remnants of Mario in it, but also remnants of Banjo-Kazooie's little side quests.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will end on an honest note: if you hated the specificity of controls for that not-so-great Zelda game, Skyward Sword, you will not like the controls here. However, if you give them a chance, you will notice they are much more responsive (the Joy-Cons have much better technology in them than the MotionPlus Remote did).

If you loved Mario Sunshine, Mario 64, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Banjo-Kazooie, and even Mario 3D World, you will truly enjoy this game and rage a little here and there at some of the more difficult places. As for the difficulty of the game, it isn't difficult as a whole. A few people are upset that this game doesn't use a "Life" system; it uses coins. Many of them thought this stupid, but the truth is, you NEED those coins for some of the funner factors of the game (no spoilers), so it does not pay (ha! pun) to lose them by continuously dying - I have no idea why anyone who actually played the game and understood the coin system thought that it was stupid, but that's that.

All in all, I have to give this game a 10/10, because the only shortcoming is that it isn't longer - and yet, no game can last forever; not all games can be Breath of the Wild. For Mario, especially, this is a good thing. The pacing of the game is enough to keep you in wonder, and that's what all great Mario games have done since he landed in 3D space.

I love this game. It's fun, enjoyable, and an all around good experience. But there are a few gripes I have with this game that make me not rate this a 10. The motion controls are very wonky at points. For example, sometimes when you try to do a spin throw, you throw your cap up or down, or vice versa. The camera is slightly annoying at points. As far content though, it's very good.

And the bosses fights are dynamic and a little challenging depending the boss you fight but the most impressive part of these fights is the mechanics to defeat the enemy. And the story is pretty good for a mario, it kinda breaks the prototype that nintendo created years ago, and the lore seems huge. If we talk about graphics i could say this is the best looking game on switch, it has so much details and beautiful landscapes.

I don't find this to be much of a problem but it would extend the gameplay and would develop the skills of the player for later in the game. What i'm referring to is the power moons, other than the main ones these take a while to collect and some of them are pretty hard. Other than this one flaw this game is definitely in my top 10 games of all time. Everything is perfect, tight controls, fun travel and easter eggs. Just get this game Expand

No suprises here, this game is brilliant. The controls are mostly fluid, with exception of the motion controls, I turned them off and play in tablet mode yet I still have to waggle and shake now and again which is just pointless and annoying. The game constantly surprises me with new ideas and mechanics . I only bought it yesterday and am already about 7 hours in. Well worth every penny.

Quite simply, Mario’s Super Magnum Opus.

An avant-garde of the interactive arts, a Switch seminal successor, and, quite possibly, Nintendo’s savior.

Amazing. Just amazing. Let's get straight into the review.

The game looks stunning, feels stunning and the controls are stunning (sometimes).
This is worth a buy, and no it isn't your average Mario game.
The gameplay is fab! A free roam Mario game?.. Since when.. Since now....

GET THE BLIMMIN GAME. Nintendo is going against themselves for GOTY with BotW.

Mario Odyssey is innovation at its finest. This game is the most creative, most enjoyable, most visually stunning game I have ever played. The soundtrack is also amazing. The only thing I did not like was the gliding sections in the Lost Kingdom and the confusing and boring at times Luncheon Kingdom. With that said those kingdoms are still amazing. This game also innovated the death system, usually when you die you would have 1UPS and when you lost all of them you went to the last world. This system was pretty frustrating so Nintendo updated it by taking 10 coins away from you. In this game coins matter because with them you can buy extremely fashionable clothes, more hearts, and even a power moon! I do feel the bosses were kind of easy but the final boss is really hard. In the post game there is even some fan service I don't want to spoil. This game is a must have for any game ever. Expand

It's amazing how this game not only lived up to the hype, but surpassed it by any and all measures. The graphics are great, the visuals are popping and unique, and it has the overall creativity and great game-play Nintendo has come to be known for. This game was so good it was the only reason I created this account, and you definitely get your bang for your buck. A definite must-play.

While the core adventure may be somewhat easy, it's the matter of collecting all of the 800+ Power Moons that grants the game charm and fun. A very worthy successor to Super Mario 64 and a fantastic game to boot. Ignore what the salty negative reviews in the user score section have to say otherwise about the game -- this game is absolutely well deserving of the attention it's been getting and is hands down the best game of the 2010s. An obvious labor of love, somewhat marred by the Action Guide which you will want to ram through someone's skull by the 4th or 5th world, shoehorned motion controls that make it feel like Nintendo is still clinging to the Wii's gimmick 11 years later, and navigation that manages to be overly cumbersome at times in spite of multiple fast-travel systems. The readiness with which the game spits Power Moons at you diminishes the feeling of accomplishment somewhat, with upwards of 60 of them on some levels -- but there's enough of them to keep completionists scouring for quite some time, and multiple opt-in hint systems to keep you from getting stonewalled.

It's less remarkable a shift and revitalization of the IP as Breath of the Wild was, there are some pronounced annoyances, but as another solid entry in the mainline open-world Mario series, it's hard not to recommend.

What can I say that hasn't been expressed better already? Not much! This is game design meeting form and function for the uniquely hybridized Switch and taking the idea of what and where gaming can be shifted dramatically to the next level.A landmark in gaming for gamers new and old alike. An absolute joy and history is made. Again!

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
