I give it 9/10 because I personally don't think it is quite as good as some previous games, such as the Mario Galaxy series or Mario 64, but it is definitely amazing nonetheless. Great Game!!!!!!!! This is a one of a kind game!!! When in Earth did they show Mario's nipples!!!!! I'm proud of you Nintendo! i'm giving you a 9/10 instead of 10/10 because you've got to understand that you can't just add nipples on Mario without a bellybutton. Find this helpful if you agree.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I recently replayed the game and all was well until I started to play Lake Kingdom. I really hate drowning damage and Cheep Cheeps moved too slow, so I turned on assist mode. I really don't like the 6 bonus hearts, because they make the game too easy in my opinion. I toggled assist mode off for Wooded Kingdom, not only because of the extra hearts, but also because disabling instadeath when falling off ledges is boring. Then I got to Seaside Kingdom and turned on assist mode. Ground pounding the squid was pretty hard, but I managed. After that, I went to Luncheon Kingdom, struggled to capture the fire thing, fell into the lava, repeated the process twice, and then ragequitted. However, the rest of the game is awesome and fun. I just wish there was an assist config like in Celeste and Darkest Dungeon because just two options are pretty limiting and extreme. Overall, I recommend this game if you can get over these annoyances. Expand

The Broodals are too cute. At one point you fight a gigantic dragon that makes me wonder why Bowser is necessary. A magnificent 3D platformer, full of references to older Mario games.
Graphically it's stunning for a Nintendo game, the musical score carries the whole thing majestically and the controls are neat as we're used to in Mario games, while offering a few new concepts which are refreshing and probably becoming a staple in future Mario games.

It felt boring, and bland. How could something so epic be something so boring and bland? After many years after trying to replay the game, I tried out something different. As after my first time beating Odyssey, I attempted to find as many stars as possible, making all the fun and interest in the world go to waste. I learned that in order to enjoy Odyssey again, I should explore at my own pace. I started to move on to different worlds once I wondered around. And you know what, it worked. I never had as much fun in Odyssey, until I started to learn to enjoy the game. And once I finished it, it really did make me glad I finished it. Odyssey is such a unique game. The amount of style is unmatched. While Odyssey is not my favorite Mario game, it sure is one of the best. You just need to learn to enjoy the game. Only three things I can complain about are simply the game being easy, that there should be more to do after the game ends, and that the story does not grab me as other games such as Super Mario Galaxy did. Mario Odyssey is just another example of how unique the 3d Mario games are. The only thing to note is that in order to enjoy the game, you need to enjoy the game! Not overwhelmingly focused on getting the moons and beating the game as fast as possible. Playing Odyssey reminded me that you need to see games like you were a kid again, not focused on all of the challenges, but by letting your curiosity go on. Expand

This game is the most overrated childish nonsense I have ever played in my entire life, from my gaming beginnings with NES and PS1 all the way to Switch and PS4. Mario Odyssey is so overrated it is a symbol of how hollow this industry has become.

How on Earth can any reviewer give this anything higher than 7? It makes no sense. This game is only perceived as good because it is a Mario game. You take Mario out of the equation and any person with more than two brain cells will tell you that this game is mediocre at best. It has the worst level design I have ever seen in a platformer, but also the ugliest. This game is ugly as hell. The graphics are not blatantly bad, but its design and style lack so much originality that it is very sad to witness. The enemies are also designed with laziness. Heck, the entire game is lazy; it's as if they didnt want to make any effort and decided to put the first designs that popped into their minds whilst using rehashed and cheap ideas from the past.

Why does this happen? why do reviewers lack attitude and respect towards their readers? how is it possible that such a mediocre experience receives accolades just because of the franchise it represents? 97 on Metacritic? Is the gaming world gone idiotic?

The main issue here isn't that the game is bad and the reviewers are catering to nostalgia-driven products, nor is the fact that the game never ever justifies a full AAA purchase, but truly the problem here is that these near perfect scores speak terribly of this industry and robs other properties, those that really make an effort, from the limelight that is always reserved for these nostalgic franchises. A concurrent 10/10 on both IGN and GameSpot? that is not only absurd, but also disrespectful and irresponsible. All the games that have received 10/10 on both websites have proven to be amazing, regardless of how much people like them or not. But this? this is garbage compared to any 9/10 game, imagine when compared to a combined 10/10. Then what is the point of these scores? What is the point on waiting for these so called promising games that can offer us wonders when such garbage receives the same score? what was the point on being amazed by the scores of Metal Gear Solid or Zelda or Chrono? What have I been playing all these years?

I believe that if this childish garbage of Mario Odyssey receives such scores, then I guess VIDEOGAMES ARE NOT ART. If this is the highest standard in gaming, then there is no hope for this medium ever being anything other than a hobby for toddlers. Shame on you IGN and shame on you GameSpot and shame to all the reviewers who are so blinded by past experiences that they lie to their readers into spending full price for something that shouldnt even cost half price. I paid more than EUR 50 for this crapfest of a videogame and honestly I dont even know how I can trust any review ever again. This is the worst experience I have ever had in my life regarding videogame and their respective scores. Reviews are opinions? NOPE. Reviews are analytical essays that, influenced by opinion and personality (but not driven by them), produce an objective valuation of a product. Objectively speaking Odyssey is nothing but a disparate toddler set of minigames. I honestly will never ever buy a Mario game in my life again. I really dont see how any human being with a brain can consider this a game with perfect scores. I have lost a ton of faith on videogame with this experience, and you have no idea how disappointing that is. Thankfully, I liked BotW, but without it I see less reasons to buy a Switch. I love my Switch, but considering that these two games were two important reasons to justify the console's purchase, now I have to say one of them is a disappointing and biased crapfest.

My last Mario game was Super Mario 64. I am generally a PS gamer. I had PS1, 2, 3, 4 and will be getting the 5. Still, I got a Switch because I know it is a great system. As a person who doesnt normally play platformers or Mario games, I believe I see this game for what it is: a videogame, not a Mario product. As a videogame, it fails colossaly to justify its scores. Most importantly, as a Mario product it only shows how sadly biased our industry is when it comes to franchises of historic appeal. Mario and Pokemon are clear evidence of how reviewers dont see the videogame behind the product and are marred by their nostalgia. Utterly flabbergasted in the saddest of ways. Shame and you, biased reviewers. In the future, reviewing should be regulated so that these websites that fool consumers could at least take their words back and think twice when considering a review again.

    Pros:
+ Gameplay: Masterfully executed within every kingdom. There was more variety in the gameplay of Odyssey than in previous Mario games.
+ Soundtrack: I'm probably alone on this, but Odyssey's soundtrack is the best Mario has ever had. Galaxy's soundtrack can't come near this in my opinion.
+ The Kingdoms: I personally LOVED every single Kingdom. Whether it's for the beautiful setting or the minigames, they all had a LOT of charm.
+ The Objectives: While there are a number of effortless moons, they are excusable since they are OUTNUMBERED by the better moons (unlike Korok Seeds that require ZERO effort to obtain other than looking up a guide because BotW does a poor job with Korok Seeds).
+ The Graphics: While not the best I've seen, they are definitely THE BEST Nintendo ever pulled off. The graphics alone pulled me into the game.
+ The Bosses: Ok, maybe the Broodals might not be the best bosses in a game, but at least they aren't Blight Ganons. All the other bosses, however, made me actually have to try. Plus, the bosses are unnecessarily AMAZING.
+ The Ending: This might be a controversial statement, but I loved the ending of Odyssey. Yep, I said it.
+ Camera Mode: Why isn't this in every game?

    Con:
    - Nose Physics: It's so minor that I don't know if I could even call it a nitpick, but it ruins pictures sometimes.

Overall, like I said above, this game is a SOLID 10/10, my GotY from 2017, and my personal favorite Game of all Time. I have never experienced this kind of fun before in my life.

Damn was I hyped about this game. I really loved the first 3d Mario there was: Mario64.

I expected way more levels, way more rewarding mechanics and in general way more on everything. I believe Nintendo was too focused on details and design. I wished they would have put as much effort and challenge into the game as there was in Mario64. Nevertheless its still a solid and good game,

Nevertheless its still a solid and good game, but not what the hype was promising

I agree fully with Gatsby's review and want to quote it:

"This is going to hurt me more than it will you. i was hyped for this game, Mario 64 is one of my favorite games. So you can imagine my excitement when i got this game early, what you can't imagine is my dissapointement.

The Length: It's disappointingly short, it took me a few hours and now all thats left to do is collect moons. But for what? The moons don't feel rewarding, they are a chore. You get them for everything, its almost like they wanted you to think that there is alot to do by adding hundreds of moons to level but it does not feel like it, It's an illusion of content. You would criticize any other game that dares to be this short, why not this?

The Levels: They are bland and sometimes straight up ugly to look at. This game is not openworld like some people want to make you believe, the levels are small and incoherent. It feels like they put everything in this game that was cut from other marios.

The Bosses: Fun but easy, like almost everything in Odyssey. It's the usual "Do a thing 3 times" boss mechanics, with every boss. Some bosses look like they are straight up out of Sonic, yes i said it.

Capture Mechanic: This is a fun one and the best part of the game.

This all sounds terrible but it's not that bad, it's just not what i expected and after seeing all the praise im baffled. This is not the best game ever, or the generation, it's not even the best mario game of the year, that's Mario+Rabbids. I feel like those reviews are based on nostalgia and because it's nintendo. I wish we could stop with this praise mentality and focus on the good and bad. There is no one out there that can tell me that there isn't just as much bad as good in Mario Odyssey. "

This could have been the greatest Mario game of all time, and maybe it actually is, but there are a few big issues that keep it from being a flawless masterpiece. As I am a pretty experienced Mario player (having 100%ed every 3D game with the exception of 64 and Sunshine), allow me to sum them up.

    1) Controls
The core controls are wonderful. They are on par with - if not better than- the magical controls of the Galaxy games. But the forced and awkward motion controls are a huge missed opportunity. They work fine enough and you can comfortably get through the game while ignoring them, but you'll miss out on a few useful cappy moves that keep things moving even more fluently. Having the option to customise the button mapping would have solved this issue.

    2) Length
You can beat the base game pretty quickly; in my case over the course of a weekend. There's still a lot to do in post game, but it's balanced pretty poorly. I would have preferred a main game that was say 5-10 hours longer, with a shorter and less tedious post game. You could make the argument that this makes secondary playthroughs and speedruns more interesting, but even for those the game is too short for my liking.

    3) Difficulty
This is the game's biggest problem. If you thought Galaxy 1's main game was easy, this is something else entirely. Even the dedicated platforming challenges can get pretty boring because of the lack of tough segments. There certainly are a few collectibles that require some skill to get, but the overall challenge for me (so far at least) has never really gone beyond "tricky". Even so, the game has a "super handholding mode" you can activate at any time for newcomers to video games. So if you're looking for a hard 3D platformer, well... Maybe give Crash Bandicoot a go.

Okay so now that's over with let's talk a bit about the fun stuff.

    1) Presentation
This game is gorgeous. The graphics and art style work together very well to deliver a sight to behold that only gets prettier the further you get in the game. Important to note is that the framerate tends to take a bit of a dive sometimes in New Donk City, but overall it stays at a fairly steady 60 fps.

    2) Level design
Apart from the relative lack of challenge, I love the level design. There are tons of collectibles everywhere, with a lot of them being hid away very cleverly. Exploring the beautiful worlds is a ton of fun, and even after finding big important items the level doesn't end, so you just keep going for as long as you want. That way the pacing keeps up the entire way through and you're always busy with something.

Okay, to prevent myself from rambling too much let me try and wrap this up.
Despite its problems, this is a fun game. You may not find a challenge here, but what you will find is a huge smile on your face from beginning to end. It oozes with the timeless Mario charm, callbacks to his entire career, adorable characters and so much more.

Switch owners, you definitely don't want to miss out on this one (though I don't really think that will be the case).

First let's start of as i said before the game is way way way too easy and should have had some difficulty options in order to liven up the gameplay a bit a lot of the enemies at time just feel there to pad the world rather than be an obstacle to Mario.

Moons . . . too many damn moons what is Nintendos issue lately? with putting way too many collectibles in their games to a point that it starts to feel more like tedium than a fun aspect, I collected almost all of the original moons in the game and a lot of them felt a joy to get they were often hidden well or required some puzzle or platforming to reach after the game however . . . You essentially double all of the moons by touching moon cubes and not only do they mark all of them on your map but a majority of them are just there no work, no puzzle, no platforming It begs the question of why? The other issue with this being you don't need to collect them all to progress the story so what felt like quite lengthy playtime from me i quickly came to realise would be a couple of hours maximum if others weren't too bothered about the collectibles

My last gripe is with the costumes I understand that we have Cappy so we are supposed to get powers and abilities from others but at the same time all those moons we collected mean nothing more than just cosmetics =/ they should have added slight and subtle effects like the most obvious make the underwater areas suit allow you to swim slightly faster etc. some of them are cool throwbacks but other than that they just seem a tad pointless.

Either way overall Mario Odyssey should be picked up for the switch it's a great looking and controls superbly I do wish we had more worlds rather than moon cubes so i could have enjoyed spending more time in it's worlds but regardless this is totally a must buy

So I bought Zelda and this game, and I got disappointed about Zelda unluckily. So I was really praying, I would end up loving this game, but I can’t say my prayers were heard. This wasn’t a big success for me either, and actually thinking heavily on getting rid of my switch. But luckily Pokémon is still coming out eventually, and I’ll keep it until then

What started off as a fresh and new adventure turned very quickly into an unwelcome slog through more and more eye searingly bright "kingdoms" that had more frustrating moments than fun.
The movement tech felt clunky, Mario felt too heavy and unresponsive, the button combos for doing some of the more advanced movement was the opposite of enjoyable, and when there were ice physics... just no... stop.

It is very clear from this game and BotW that Nintendo has a long way to go when it comes to developing engaging and captivating open world games, because this felt like a less charming Banjo Kazooie in a bigger, less planned out as a cohesive world, sandbox with little nuggets sprinkled throughout.
It was like being given a meatball sub, but more than half the meatballs were just cubes of bread.
None of the parts of each level flowed into the next, it was all very segmented, and some of the "Kingdoms" made me want to leave literally as soon as possible. The "Kingdoms" were so unmemorable that I cannot even recall the names of them, where as for other Mario games they are stuck in my memory forever because they were fun as heck.
All the floor is poison zone was the worst offender, I think I spent all of 15 minutes in that world and I never ever ever want to go back. And Lunchmeat land made me want to gouge my eyes out.

The only zone I actually enjoyed was, of course, New Donk City, where it was abundantly clear that it had the vast majority of development time spent on it. Out of all the worlds that was the only one where exploring flowed naturally into more exploring, jumping from rooftop to rooftop was fantastically fun, and that was the only zone I got more moons than I needed to just peace out.

None of the bosses provided even the slightest challenge, I just stood facing them and waggled my left or right hand, depending on what flavor of waggle I was feeling like at the time, and they all fell first try.

All in all I was very disappointed by the bland, repetitive and all in all uninspired game-play.
It's a good looking game, it is good for a bit of fun, kids will love it.
But it is sadly only just a good game, nothing great, nothing outstanding.

Mario Odyssey tries really hard to go back to its roots and capture the free for all sandbox design of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine while using floatier physics like Super Mario Galaxy. On the topic of movement, it's wonderful in this game. Using your new hat partner Cappy to jump is satisfying. The new ball roll is extremely quick and fun. The return of the dive last seen in Sunshine, while not as versatile, is a nice addition. Overall movement feels like the best it's ever been because it combines elements of every 3d Mario game. I think that last sentence there best describes how I feel about Odyssey. It is one big mashup of every major 3d game but doesn't really do anything new. I'll try to highlight this in the next topic: the kingdoms of Odyssey.

The kingdoms are fine. The level design overall pretty low in quality compared to the other Mario games. Take Pinna Park from Sunshine. It's a complete joy to jump and run around the park because of the rides there complete Sunshines wonderful movement. In Odyssey, the kingdoms feel very typical. Non are really groundbreaking and amazing, the only exception being The Metro Kingdom. The Runied Kingdom and the Cloud Kingdom are disappointing. They're only existence is for boss battles and they contain 7 moons total(most of which are easy to get). I don't understand why Nintendo couldn't have made these kingdoms fleshed out, they honestly feel incomplete. That's not to say the level design of the kingdoms is bad, they're just decent.

The moons in the game are very similar to shrines in Breath of the Wild. Few of them are challenging to get and feel like a reward, while the majority of them are just kinda sitting there or have a glowing clue to there presence. The number of moons is staggering there are 836 of them. However, this brings up the debate between quantity vs. quality. Odyssey is a very easy game so getting most of these moons is extremely easy. The quality in receiving 120 shine sprites in say Sunshine is higher because it offers more of a challenge getting those shine sprites. Bigger isn't always better. This also goes for the sandbox nature of the games. It tries too hard to be a playground of fun like 64. This game is not truly non-linear neither is any 3d Mario game, so if you're looking for that experience you won't find it here. Mario works best in a linear fashion, that's why the galaxy games are great. Odyssey has barren worlds minus New Donk City, which is a lot of fun. While the music is excellent in levels in Lake and Seaside Kingdom swimming controls are significantly worse than any other 3d Mario(at least the cheep cheep capture ability solves this) The post game opens up a lot of these easy to collect moons. It makes the game fillied with mediocre content. One of the post game kingdoms hoever is a lovley callout to a previous Mario game but I don't want to spoil it.

This ties into the capture ability of Mario Odyssey. Sure it is a lot of fun becoming a frog, fireball in Luncheon, and the gust blowing enemy in Shiveria, but is it a groundbreaking fundamental? Compared to the spin from Galaxy and Fludd from Sunshine no it's not. This ties back to level design. The level design of Odysseys predecessors complimented the gimmicks each new game introduced. Most of the time the capture abilities are only used to get to a new platform or for a grand set piece. Compared to the tricks you can do with Fludd and the spin manipulating panels in Galaxy there is no moment in Odyssey where I say wow this use of the capture ability is genius and revolutionary. By no means is the capture ability bad in fact it has a lot of potentials to become better and it's a lot of fun. It would be even better if the levels were designed around using it in smarter ways.

The graphics in Odyssey are wonderful. The style is a true joy to the eyes. The story is competent for a Mario game, it's much better than Galaxy 2's and Sunshine's. The music is excellent with the best being Seaside Kingdom's bossa nova feel. And the bosses are decent but the final boss is one of the better Mario final bosses in recent memory.

The mini 2d sections are so minute that they don't matter that much. They're cool neat additions. The attention to detail when a bullet bill goes from 3d to 2d is astonishing, however, compared to 2d Mario games, Mario kinda controls like crap.
I won't spoil but the bonus for 100% completion is very very disapointing.

Overall Super Mario Odyssey is a very fun and decent game. However, it lacks some of the awe and polish other 3d Mario's set before it. I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to have a good fun 3d platformer and who has enjoyed Mario's previous 3d outings.

Super Mario Odyssey is a great game to get for your kids, so long as they aren't easily frustrated by awkward camera controls or Mario running as though he's on ice or slipperier ice the entire game. The main challenge is figuring out how to make Mario do what you want him to do without facing the wrong way, succumbing to inertia, or throwing your cap-panion in the wrong direction. I am astonished, quite frankly, that other reviews have touted the responsiveness of the title character in this game. My experience was quite the opposite. Dexterity and patience with the camera controls, that is, are your main opponents in the game.

The puzzles-- the parts of the game I wish were challenging-- are remarkably simple and the basic story is dull, repetitive, and short (not to speak of its depressingly archaic gender roles, Mayor Pauline notwithstanding). After my initial interest in the main conceit (Cappy controlling your enemies; more on that later) I became more and more disappointed with what the game had to offer. I was not compelled to explore any of the worlds because everything I found was basic, and, eventually, without joy. After the closing credits I read Cappy's exhortation to explore more worlds and gladly exited to the Home screen to close the software, never to open it again.

The one shining point of this game is the main conceit of Cappy. Being able to take control of the various enemies that Mario has faced over the years (and a few other beasties as well) had me grinning for the first several hours of play. This too became tedious after a while, but those few hours are enough to make me think that children will be captivated by this game for quite some time. The puzzles may be challenging enough to maintain their interest, the Candyland graphics may enchant them, and they may not be disappointed with the terrible controls.

I would have accepted the game if the main quest was easy if the post game was easy, but no. The post game is easier than the main quest. That has to be some kind of joke. Not even the final level was that hard. There were only a few times I genuinely had fun which were the 8-bit gravity shrine in the Mushroom Kingdom and when you get to be Bowser. Other than those, the game is just constant rewards. The visuals are good, not great. The mechanics haven't changed from Mario 64 which is why it didn't receive a 0 from me. This game is great for children but look elsewhere for any form of a challenge that doesn't involve mindlessly collecting oddly shaped purple coins or moons. Unfortunately, this is simply a paint-by-numbers, unimpressive participation trophy.

So the gameplay was fun and all but what really pissed me off was the story:
You play this little man trying to save a princess from this bowser chad who wants to "force"-marry her to him (isn't this a bit **** up by itself?) and after you went through all those worlds to find out that bowser stole something special from each world for the wedding, you arrive at the moon to crash the wedding bowser spent so much time setting up (I still don't understand how the princess kept wanting to be rescued after all the nice things bowser got for her) After the player beats bowser, the pricess doesn't even thank mario or anything and just leaves him hanging while bowser gets rejected as well after they both try to "win" her by offering flowers. The ending ruined the whole buildup in my opinion.

For me Mario is the Star Wars of Video Games. I want to like to it, I don’t and it makes me sad that I don’t like it.

I picked up Odyssey hoping it would be different but I just don’t like the way Mario controls. His jump feels floaty and I often times find myself dying a lot more than I would like. This franchise is the perfect example of different strokes, its just not for me but I’ll keep trying.

This game looks great, from conversations with my friends they think it plays great and by all accounts its a good game that I do not like.

Odyssey returns to the same sandbox style gameplay last seen in Mario 64 and it is simply a joy to explore each of the games numerous kingdoms. No matter which way you turn there always seems to be something to see and do and the game biggest new feature, the ability to take control of many of the enemies by throwing you cap at them, is brilliantly implemented into the gameplay allowing for some excellent puzzles and platforming challenges.

And just when you think it's all over the game gives you a whole host of new challenges to tackle.

More games like this please Nintendo!!!

And in Mario Odyssey, the places you can go and the actions you can take are all worth exploring which keeps you peeking around every bend for the next hidden treasure. No game in recent memory has filled me with more warmth and pure joy than Mario Odyssey. It is a love letter to all that Mario is and has been while also flipping the formula upside down. I honestly can't imagine not having Cappy in future installments as he opens up infinite gameplay possibilities for the future. Do yourself a favor and play Super Mario Odyssey. Story is simple. Yet again, Bowser kidnap princess that is always in another castle. And Your job is to get her back.

Graphic and sound are great. They are not jaw droping but Nintendo consoles were always about games itself and not much about power. Still game look very nice and "mario like".

Story - well story is really simple.

Level design is AMAZING. You will find here everything and you will always discover something new. Like that you can throw a hat, make it spin and jump on it to launch yourself to places you were thinking are unreachable.

And you can be a TREE!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am just lost for words. How am I going to start this?

I currently have 526 moons within 1 week of play purely because I couldn't put the game down. Infact, I am actually trying to slow down because I don't want it to end just yet.
From my first moments of playing, it is evident to me and probably most of the people who have played this that Nintendo have gone all out with this to give us what we wanted.
I personally haven't seen a game with this much excitement, attention to detail and personality in a very long time. Probably since Banjo-Kazooie on the N64. I am STILL discovering new areas and secrets! There is just a mindblowing amount of things to do in this game and I've had a smile on my face the whole time.
In terms of longevity, if you are gathering moons just to unlock each world with the occasional extras you stumble across, you will most likely finish the main game with around 150-200 moons from memory, out of the massive total of 880 moons that are waiting to be found. That's not even a quarter of the game!

The game is insanely fun and it holds a very even challenge while being fair, but also challenging the people who want to play further or to the end.
The best part is, it's fresh throughout its entirety and looks stunning. You will always be wanting to explore and discover new things since every world has its own style and characteristics. Consistency is at an all time high as there is not a single point where the game starts to hit a downfall (cough yooka-laylee)

If you have a switch, there is no reason to avoid getting Mario Odyssey. It will have you hooked for hours. I've marked it as a 10 since its a 9.8 from me. Literally the only thing that drops it from a perfect 10 is how easy it is to get a lot of the moons. In saying that, there are so many well hidden and challenging moons that make up for it. Since the game is incredibly fun, the easy factor doesn't really become a major issue.

I'm calling it. This is my favourite 3D Mario game ever. Not Mario 64, Not Mario Sunshine, Not Mario Galaxy, but this. It has the DNA from every one of them.
Eventhough all those games are fantastic as well, I personally think that this is the pinnacle now and also a key indicator for other developers to take notes on how a successful platformer should be.
    Much love Nintendo :)

Now, later in the game, for those aiming to get all the moons, it gets much more challenging and fun - and sometimes frustrating, too. The good side of that game is that it offers a lot of post-game content and replay value, even for experienced platforming gamers. After 30 hours of playtime, I collected about 2/3 of all the moons and I'm still having a lot of fun with the game. I'm recommending this one for everyone, but most gamers will likely have to spend several hours before getting into the fun stuff.

Playing as Mario himself is as simultaneously tight and fluid as ever and the way some levels transition between 2D and 3D platforming really showcases the best the series has to offer in every dimension.

All of the different kingdoms are intriguing and beautiful with tons of secrets to find and space to explore. The different costumes you can collect inject a humorous customization aspect and provides plenty of extra incentive to keep playing and collecting long after the credits roll.

Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece and manages to stand out and leave a mark even in a franchise crowded with masterpieces.

Even when you finish the game there is so much to do. Such as revisiting kingdoms to collect more power moons and playing mini games. You can even customize Mario and the odyssey. They also make coins useful in this game. It can be used as currency to buy stuff and you loose 10 coins when you die. There are also purple coins that are unique to each stage which can be used to customize Mario and the odyssey. The most comparable came to Super Mario Odyssey is Super Mario Galaxy. The game takes so many traits from Galaxy, sunshine and 64. For example the health bar from Galaxy, cappy-less stages like flood-less stages from sunshine, and the fact that you can change into the old 64 Mario model in the mushroom kingdom is absolutely awesome. there are so many 64 references that you have to play to have the full experience. It is an amazing game and I don't see why being easy is bad. The game has a high skill ceiling. Well, first I'll explain what a skill ceiling is. A skill ceiling is a point where any improvements you make are unnoticeable. And it's awesome how assist mode works. I've played through the game twice, once with the assist and once without it, and it does really help. It's the only switch game I play now, and I literally haven't taken out its gamecard since I got the game. I literally got up, applauded, and whistled at the credits, and it's seriously cool. I love the sheer amount of content, and describing how amazing this game is would take well over 5000 characters. Let's run through what you can and can't do here. THIS IS THE PART WITH SPOILERS!

Capture said Gushen, glitch through a wall, and zoom off? Check, although they should probably fix that.
Throw your hat at Bowser, capture him, and take off running through a collapsing moon? Check.
Visit Peach in all the kingdoms? Check.

With previous installments of 3D Mario games taking a more linear approach (Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World), Super Mario Odyssey charts a new, yet familiar, direction by encouraging players to explore large sandbox levels packed with collectibles. Not only are there Power Moons (the main collectible in the game) scattered everywhere in each level, there are also coins one can use to purchase clothing, and purple coins to purchase level specific materials. The new and main mechanic of the game is using Mario's hat and companion, Cappy, to take over enemies and utilize their abilities to further explore and discover each area. The game also allows players to play at their own pace and to control the extent of their exploration. If the player explores and takes risks they are rewarded with Power Moons, coins, and extra challenges. Don't expect anything new story-wise (this is a Mario game after all). The focus is the game play and level design; and they are both phenomenal. If you are a fan of Super Mario 64 and the several 3D platform collectible games that are like it, Super Mario Odyssey is cut from the same cloth and you will enjoy it. While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.
