Egg hunting style Mario games aren't about difficulty, they are an experience. This game is what I consider to be a modernized 3D Mario game. It feels like it took elements every Mario game ever made, and combined it into this ultimate experience. This is one Mario game that keep you playing and not want to ever put it down.
The story itself isn't long at all, but it hardly makes a impact

The story itself isn't long at all, but it hardly makes a impact on the game itself. It might actually be a favor so that the player can play at their own pace. Peach is kidnapped and Mario needs to save her, same old thing, but like almost every Mario game ever made, the game isn't about the story. However, I will say that this game holds the most cutest ending that I have ever seen in any video game.
Once the story has been finished, the content increases by huge margin. The amount of Moons you can collect is numerous, and there are so many different outfits for you to try out, the fun just keep going. The content is so great, the game stays fresh from beginning to end.

I can't explain how fun and how happy I feel when I play this game. No boring worlds, no boring story scenes, ALL FUN.
To me this is the successor to Galaxy, Sunshine and 64 combined with a 3DWorld feeling and I absolutely love it. It is insane how Nintendo has put Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey the same year, it just amazes me.
I rate this game a solid 10 and of course if you have a Nintendo Switch, buy the game if you have the money, just buy it, it's worth every euro/dollar/etc of it.

So here is it Super Mario odyssey or better say super Mario galaxy 3(Easy laughter complete of nostalgia). Everything that you need to know about this game is that it is very qualitative 3d platformer lately which will steal from you devilishly many hours! And honestly it is enough to tell this reason to play this game.

Nintendo took all the open world Mario games like Mario Sunshine, SM64 and Super Mario Galaxy to name a few and mixed it along with new mechanics and into what is now called Super Mario Odyssey. The game, in all honesty, was mostly easy. That begins to change when you realize that you need to collect all 999 Power Moons to unlock something once completed. Aside from this, the gameplay was fun! Very, very fun! The story was fantastic, the ending BLEW MY MIND! I don't want to spoil the ending, so it is best you buy it and play it yourself. The game's rating is definitely well worth. Nintendo is leading a great future, and I, along with others, will support them till the end! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Odyssey can be described in one word: joyful.

Every minute I play this game, I have a huge smile on my face, enjoying every minute. From the kingdom to the last, every moment is just a joy.

Mario controls better than ever before. Cappy is a great innovation to the series. Movement is much more varied than before, thus bringing a ton of creativity into how you can get from one place to the next.

    Spoilers from here on:

My two favorite levels have to be the final level of the main series after defeating Bowser and, by far my favorite level in this game and probably any game ever, is the festival at the end of New Donk City. The amazing song mixed with the incredible throwback game play truly made me emotional and close to the point of tears for a video game that, with respect to the game, has no right of doing. I have cried during two games before for different reasons. The Last of Us because of the raw drama and storytelling and Super Mario Odyssey because of the sheer beauty of the game and joy I have playing it.

That all being said, I genuinely think 2017 will go down as one of the best years Nintendo has ever had. From the success of the Switch to the grandiose Breath of the Wild to the joyful Mario Odyssey, this has been a great year for Nintendo. Even games that aren't as popular, like Splatoon 2, are still phenomenal games.

Nintendo has truly hit a home run in 2017.

U. Returning to the exploration-based formula from Super Mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey provides a fantastically open adventure with the most non-linear Mario game released so far. Most of the main bosses can be skipped if you find enough Power Moons before you encounter them. The game takes many new and experimental leaps for the Super Mario franchise, with many additions such as giant sandbox-like worlds, memorable NPCs and enemies, and the first song in a Mario game with full lyrics, “Jump Up, Super Star!” (not counting spin-offs and promotional material) The controls are tight and responsive, and even though some moves with the capture ability require motion controls, there are button combinations for many of the moves that seem like they require motion. (Example: with a captured Cheep-Cheep, you can shake your controller to attack or press the B and Y buttons.) The capture mechanic is fun, and I had a blast finding out what I could transform into. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a fantastic experience that will be remembered fondly as the Super Mario 64 of this generation of kids. If you have a switch, buy this game. Expand

The motions controls feel so intuitive and really enhance the gameplay. Cappy serves as a great sidekick, with his boomerang and capture abilities providing a refreshing take on the classic 3D Mario Mechanics. Visually, it is a gorgeous game. It maintains 60 fps consistently in both mobile and docked. There seems to be a variety of different environments in this game, unlike Super Mario Galaxy and Sunshine. While those games followed a common theme, Odyssey takes influence from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World in that there is a (Spoilers) desert world, ghost world. tropical world, metro world, etc. The music is phenomenal. I recommend that everyone use a headset to truly appreciate it. I had chills running down my spine once I heard the theme from the Switch Presentation Trailer for Odyssey. No other franchise has made as big of an impact on the gaming industry as Mario. He is the Micky Mouse of gaming. This game can be enjoyed by anyone. Enthusiast gamers. Father/Mother playing with his or her kids. Teenagers. Anyone. I had lost faith in Nintendo during the Wii U generation. They have absolutely blown me away with putting out masterpieces such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. These 2 games make the Switchh worth it. I must also add that this year has been incredible for gaming. Besides Mario and Zelda, we had Persona 5, Cuphead, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier, Nioh, Divinity. Instead of debating Game of the Years. I've never played a 3d Mario game but I did a whole lot of research and learned that 3d Mario's were getting more and more linear, so people were excited for this. Then came E3, I thought the game looked amazing during the trailer and the gameplay, I was super hyped. I wasn't as into it as Splatoon 2 only because Splatoon 2 was coming out later and Mario + Rabbids was leaked. During the week before it's release I was way too hyped and I'm happy to say that it lived up to that hype. It's approachable and the exploration rewards you for everything you do. For example, the fact that you don't take any fall damage just rewards players. It's fun, as you know this review contains spoilers because of this line. When I entered the Forgotten Kingdom I was ecstatic that it was only about exploration and nothing else. That only scratches the surface of what I like about this game and love about this game but to not make this review too long I'm gonna stop here. So I give Super Mario Odyssey a 10/10 Expand

You will not be disappointed with this purchase, it is well worth $100 with all it's content and stellar design. Buy this game if you have a Switch, and if not, buy a Switch bundled with this game. In my opinion the greatest mario platformer out there as well as one of the greatest mario games ever made! The story is very unique for a mario game and gameplay, level design and soundtrack are near-perfect! This game might lack replay-value, but the other things make up for that! A must buy for any Nintendo Switch owner!

This is one the best 3D mario game ever. There are so many kingdoms that are fun to explore. There is so many things to do in these kingdoms. What keeps you coming back to the game after you finish it are powermoons. There are 999! All of the details put in to the game are just amazing. Best mario game ever

Super Mario Odyssey is a game which made by the end of it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. When i first bought it and played it, i felt this great feeling wash over me, realising that i can play a mario game which look as fantasic as this on the go. It still amazes me. The mechanics feel great, the controls and levels are very intuitive and i much enjoyed collecting the moons. The mechanics feel great, the controls and levels are very intuitive and i much enjoyed collecting the moons. However, i felt underwhelmed by this games storymode. Sure, many could argue that the story in a mario game is really not important in the grand scheme of things. I mean, look at Super Mario 3, or 64. However, compare this to Super Mario Galaxy, a game with a great story. In Galaxy, there was more to that game than great game mechanics. And the great story tied in with the difficulty of that game, which felt very appropriate. However, mario odyssey's game difficulty in relation to story progression felt very unsatisfyingly easy, and was very bland for a 3d mario game. I could skip parts of the story just by collecting moons. And the boss battles, an exception being the last bowser battle/sequence, were lacklustre as hell. I know Mario games usually have a young fan base, but still i wish there was more challenge in relation to the story. I'd trade a good story for a higher difficulty anyday. However, i have learned that the best way to play this game - for me - is just to treat it as a scavenger hunt/puzzle game. Collecting all the moons is a challenge in itself, and because of the switch's nature, i can pick up and play for 10 miniutes intervals and collect moons in that time, slowly collecting all of them. And that is when Mario Odyssey shines, when you don't focus on the story, and explore the worlds around you, and their puzzles buried in them. Expand

Super Mario Odyssey was the first proper 3D Mario in 15 years. There have been Galaxy and 3D world/land, but those were level-based and linear. Odyssey is open world, like 64 and Sunshine. But some people don’t think it’s the true successor. It isn’t. In fact, it’s better then 64 and Sunshine and Galaxy and all 3D Marios. Why? How?

But some people don’t think it’s the true successor. It isn’t. In fact, it’s better then 64 and Sunshine and Galaxy and all 3D Marios. Why? How?

The plot is the same; Bowser kidnapped Peach. It’s never said why he does this, but now he wants to marry her. So, he pulls out all the stops. Mario tries to finish it quick, but Bowser destroys him and sends him flying to a place called Bonneton. He then meets a Bonneteer named Cappy who’s sister was taken by Bowser and placed on Peach’s head. Wow. I did not expect a decent story.

The gameplay is that Mario is in a big world which he needs to explore and get Power Moons. Power Moons are used to power up his ship and fly to the next area. If you remember 64 or Sunshine, the stars and shines are more mission based, but you can find these moons anywhere, making the world seem bigger. I like this more because there are all these little nooks and crannies in every kingdom, and you get a nice reward for finding them. To find some, you need to “capture” an enemy. To do this you have to throw Cappy on their head. Then, you posses them and can play as them. This seems weird on the surface, but it’s actually a lot of fun to be a Cheep cheep of Hammer bro and see what it’s like for them.

Super Mario Odyssey looks great while running at 60 fps. You can see every hair on Mario and all the scratches on the Chain Chomps. I don’t really have a complaint with the presentation. The locations are very creative and reflect on the presentation nicely. Take Toastarena. Sure, it’s a basic desert, but instead of being Egypt themed, it’s Mexico themed. As a person who lives in a desert very similar to it, I have to say they did it justice. There are also 2 vocalized songs which both sound very good.

Odyssey is short. About 10 hours. It’s also a bit easy. But all the content comes from 100% the game. People who don’t like it didn’t play the post-game. In fact, 100% the game will take 70 hours. Wow. You don’t get a game like that often. After you 100% it however, the only thing you can do is play Balloon World. Balloon world is not a reason to go back.

A lot of people demote it saying that there’s no reason to play it now, and I kind of agree. But if you haven’t played it before, definitely do. It’s the 6th bestselling Switch game for a reason. It was so good that I, and many others, have it a standing ovation when completed. 2017 was a good year thanks to this stellar game.

The capturing mechanic makes the blandish but beautiful worlds sooo much more interesting, you can capture your run of the mill goombas and also you can capture other things you would never expect. If you don't like the capture idea you probably won't love the game, that's the biggest aspect of it so if you think it's some gimmick you definitely should run from this game. Cappy also makes the game a lot more spicy, he is a cute loveable character that is the F.L.U.D.D of Odyssey. Except he's a lot less controlling and is not overpowered.
My only gripes are that the main story is entirely too easy to run through, the requirements are way too low but there's so many moons per level that doing your first 100% run could take you a hefty amount of time. Also the boss battles are way too easy, they don't get hard til after the main game, you can really beat the bosses in the first few tries including the final boss.
But the finale is amazing, you do something you would never expect to do, and a lot of stuff unlocks in the kingdoms after the boss so the end of the game is far after the final boss.
Yes there are some small things that put a small damper on the game but that's a small price to pay for all of the good things you will experience. Super Mario Odyssey is one of Mario's best adventures yet and it is the switch's best title thus far!

I think this game is really fun, a bit on the easy side but after you beat it, there are challenges that will be sufficient for people who want them. If you have a switch, definitely get this, if you don't have one, this game makes a decent case as to why you might want to pick one up.

The only negative thing is that without using the 2 Joycons (when using the Pro controller, for instance), you don't have all the options to control your cap, but it's still perfectly fine. I don't know, that's just for saying something, because I don't find flaws in this game! It has renewed platform games, it has opened a world for them, like Zelda BOTW did with its genre. I mean yes, this is a good game. Very good in fact. A really solid, highly polished 3D platformer that ticks a lot of Mario boxes, but I can't be the only one who sees the very obvious flaws here?

Like the difficulty level, maybe? I'm not a "git good" type of guy, but this is very, very simple throughout and takes very few chances with the difficulty curve. I get that this makes it accessible to all and that's the main aim of a family title like this, but aside from interesting game mechanics (which are numerous to be totally fair), the difficulty makes the whole game feel one-paced. You'd expect the bosses to provide the challenge at the end of a level maybe, but no - they are by and large the same uninspired 3-hit-and-done affairs from Mario 64, which was the biggest weakness of that game - even if you're a rabid Mario fan, surely you can admit that these should have been improved big time by now?

Or maybe a bit of critique about the moons? You know, how unlike the stars in Mario 64, where they were a legit objective and felt like an achievement grabbing each one, the moons here are tossed around like candy and it's harder to NOT collect them? The game would have been infinitely more enjoyable if the moons had more of a point and there were far fewer of them - yes, I get that it's a collect-a-thon, but even Yooka-Laylee and, more obscure but still very good, Poi got this balance better.

The abundance of moons plays in to my next big gripe with it - the length of the thing at its' core. Yes, collecting as many moons as possible artificially extends the game, but you don't have to (and indeed I can't see why you'd want to), and you can beat the game pretty quickly as a result.

The levels themselves are hit and miss. New Donk City is fantastic, whereas others feel cut and paste jobs; like they are tickboxing what should be in a Mario game and going through the motions.

I know the above makes it look like I hate the game, but I really don't. It really is well polished, the controls are sublime, the outfit changes are inspired and add a myriad of options to game play, the trainsitions to 2D are flawless and add an extra level of depth, the visuals are the best since Sunshine and the whole thing does a tremendous job of building a pseudo-open-world. It is very much a very good game.

But an instant classic? The best Mario ever? It's... really not. Honestly. It's good enough to recommend, but people have gone way, way over the top on praise for it. For the Switch itself, it's not as good as Zelda: BotW, and it's arguably not even as good as Mario+Rabbids. In terms of Mario games, it's not as good as Sunshine, 64, 3, World... It's just a very good yet second tier Mario game. If you love Mario, you'll love this - just don't go in expecting to be blown away, which is the danger if you're taking the frankly odd review scores into account.

You gave us a "Super Mario" game PACKED with content, collectibles, and new things to do. You made a "Super Mario" game that felt like what we wanted, but also evolved the franchise and kept things fresh. You created a love letter to the entire "Mario" franchise (and even some side-franchises), a game that reminds us of why this franchise has survived for so long and has churned out such wonderful titles. And best of all, you made a creative, fresh, and all-around brilliant video game, a game that I might go as far as to say is one of the best in your long library of excellent titles.
"Super Mario Odyssey" is truly a wonder to behold. It's creative, it's inventive, it's fun, it's gorgeous, it controls wonderfully, and all-in-all, it's just incredible. It's a game that's easy to get into, but one that brings more than enough challenge to the table. And with 999 Power Moons to collect and plenty of different creatures to capture, all leading to different gameplay mechanics, there is PLENTY to do in this game. The mechanic of being able to capture enemies and characters also allows for some incredibly varied, and all-around fun, gameplay that will keep you coming back for more. Earlier this year, I mentioned that "Super Smash Bros. Melee" was my favorite video game of all time. Well, I can safely say that there's a new #1, and that's "Super Mario Odyssey." This game is an absolute must-play: if you don't have a Switch, I can say it is absolutely worth buying one for this game. The adventure begins in the midst of a battle between Mario and Bowser that ends with – gasp! – the latter defeating the former and making off with Princess Peach, whom he intends to marry just as soon as he can gather everything he needs to put on a top notch wedding. In many ways, Super Mario Odyssey is the weirdest that Mario has been in years. The game takes place across more than a dozen Kingdoms, many of which feature some of the sorts of themes you might expect from a Mario title – ice and lava, forests and spooky levels full of darkness.
The problem about this game, ITS TOO EASY for veteran players, the lack of challenge are everywhere and the Bowser's formula is kinda annoying yet. There's a constant back and forth between education and challenge as the game teaches its mechanics. At first, discovery is the game's reward to you – then challenge becomes its own reward as Odyssey tests that discovery. This is what Mario has done for 30 years more effectively than almost any other franchise or idea, and it's just as successful in Odyssey. It's present in the platforming sections, which avoid the mistakes of other games deftly (most of the time), but the purest articulations of that philosophy are in Odyssey's boss fights. But if that’s the worst complaint to be levelled at Super Mario Odyssey, it’s in pretty good shape. Indeed, one might go so far as to call it one of 2017’s essential gaming experiences. It will remind you of everything you’ve ever loved about Nintendo platforming games while simultaneously creating new Mario memories you’ll cherish for years to come. If you needed a reason beyond Zelda to invest in a Switch, this ought to suffice.

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that easily lives up to the Super Mario title - and is an excellent addition to the 3D lineup - if you own a Switch, this game is worth the purchase. Now let's get into the details.

    A: Music/Sounds

Unlike Breath of the Wild which had a rather lacking soundtrack, Mario Odyssey has a soundtrack which easily surpasses most of the other games in the Super Mario franchise. To be specific, I'm referring to the 2 incredible vocal tracks in the game - a very jazzy style which really feels refreshing to see in a Mario game.

The individual sounds aren't outstanding - I mean, there's not much to be good at - you have Mario noises, coin sound effects and the like.

    10/10

    B: Graphics

The graphics on Super Mario Odyssey are by far the best out of any Nintendo Switch game that we have seen thus far. Mario has never looked this good - and Nintendo knows it, since they added the surprisingly fun Photo Studio mode. Mario's nose literally has wobble physics. Need I say more?

All the environments look superb. On the top of my head, I really can't think of anything specific that had poor graphics. I'm literally not lying when I say that these graphics look like they're from a PS4 game - they're that good.

10/10 WITH my Thumbs Up of Approval

    C: Gameplay

The gameplay is as superb as ever. Platforming feels smooth and you never feel like you're accidentally misjudging where you're going to land. Every location in the game has a large variety of Moons to collect - which is fun, and adds dozens of hours of content, but I can't help but miss the level design of previous 3D Mario games like Super Mario Sunshine - where you'd have a specific objective to, say, clean a certain eel's teeth underwater.

Additionally, there are a few kingdoms in the game which are pretty much only Boss Kingdoms and have barely any Moons. I kind of wish that they didn't introduce kingdoms for them to almost be immediately dropped.

The shops which allow you to purchase outfits for Mario and souvenirs for his Odyssey ship feel really refreshing - it seems like the developers took some ideas from Breath of the Wild in the dressing-up aspect.

7/10 - Fun gameplay and collectibles, some underused kingdoms and not enough real missions

    D: Story

The story in this game isn't bad by any means. It's fun to essentially chase Bowser across the entire world to rescue Peach - and it's not like the story of previous Mario games were much more detailed...

The little mini-stories that are occurring in many of the kingdoms are also really fun to participate in, but they sort of take away the urgency that the story SHOULD have - it feels more like Mario is taking that vacation he wanted to have in Super Mario Sunshine.

The final boss battle/ending is really something special though - definitely one of the absolute highest points in the game, and is much, much better than pretty much every other 3D Mario title.

One thing that the game actually has which is really unique is the post-story content. In most 3D Mario titles, the game will pretty much forget that you ever rescued Princess Peach and she'll revert back to being imprisoned. In Super Mario Odyssey, things take a very welcomed turn of events - and once you beat the game, it will stay beaten. The post-story content isn't the best in the world, but it's certainly better than having none at all.

Unfortunately, I feel that the story is a little bit of a step down from Super Mario Galaxy - which easily had the best story of any Mario game ever. I mean, can things get any better than saving the whole galaxy whilst simultaneously rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser? The book on Rosalina's backstory was also really touching - and it was certainly a surprise to realise that Mario games could have such touching moments. As a result of this, it's a little sad to see just another super happy Mario game with no real dramatic moments at all - it's not surprising, but I feel that Mario games could use more moments like this.

9/10 - Post-story content, fun story - but nothing really new is brought to the table.

In conclusion, this is a really fun game which will provide you with many hours of content - after getting the game to 100% completion myself, I had racked up 75 hours of gametime. If you have a Switch, you should get this game - don't just beat the story though, as this game is worth getting to 100% completion. It's definitely a worthy entry to the Super Mario franchise.

8/10 - Incredible graphics, unforgettable music, fun gameplay and a good story - with some aspects leaving something to be desired, however.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's face it. This game is really easy. I am not a particularly skilled player, and I got to the Bowser fight after a dayfull of playing the game. The Bowser fight wasn't that hard, but harder than everything else. I would recomend this to those who have never played video games before (it'll be a challenge at that level, but still fun) and for players who have played scince the NES. The game is shock full of a collectable called power moons, that you use to power your airship, the Odyssey. The game also has purple coins in each kingdom, ussually 100. Some are easy to find, some a little harder. 100% -ing this game will take a lot of time. This game earns 10/10 because:
    - Having Cappy as a companion is very usefull, and a fun twist on the traditional Mario vibe. Capturing enemies never felt "over powered," or game-ruining. But, rather, fun and a good mechanic.
    - The Moons are wonderful comparable with Stars in previous titles.
    - I personnaly like the way the Odyssey works. Some people seem dissapointed that it is not a hubworld, but I like it better than a hubworld.
    - The art style. Just wow. Mario never looked this good. And the addition of the new
    - snapshot mode is amazing. Very nice to be able to freeze and move the camera for that just-right capture. Similar to SSB for 3DS and Wii U. 's camera funtion.
    - Never a dull moment. I would say this is one of the best games I have ever played. No joke.
Mario Odyssey has gotten mostly good reviews, but some dislike specific aspects. I think that if you have a Switch and can find $60 you almost absolutly must buy this game.

The critics are going crazy and the audience loves it. It runs smoothly, docked or undocked, it looks gorgeous and seeing the amount of detail that went into the game is fantastic (amazing to see the actual hairs on Mario's mustache) The gameplay is great - however the issue with the camera controls is a bit 'eh' at times and can really mess with the player and make them miss their jumps at time. Another issue that I found is that the game is easy. A lot of the moons that can be found are just spoon-fed to the player (However, there are quite a few that are difficult to acquire, to fully get 100% it isn't extremely easy) Expand

Early this year I thought Breath of the Wild would easily run away with the title of Game of the Year. As I played farther and farther into Super Mario Odyssey I realized BOTW had some real competition and now I can't decide what of the two is more deserving of GOTY.

I've seen people criticize SMO for being too easy. That'd be a valid complaint if the game was only the story content but

I've seen people criticize SMO for being too easy. That'd be a valid complaint if the game was only the story content but there is so much more to this game. I personally look at the ease of the story content as a strength as it allows more people to experience the ending when paired with the wealth of content that opens afterwards for people to challenge themselves with.

The gameplay is both familiar and new, giving Mario his wide range of movement abilities he's built up over his history while adding some new ones using his signature cap. I'm personally not a fan on motion controls and thankfully even through the game tries it's best to encourage you to use them you don't actually need to. I played almost the entire game using the Joy-con grip and an occasional flick if I really felt like it.

As the name "Odyssey" implies exploration is a big part of this game. The locations are spacious and varied giving the player plenty to see and do. My personal favorite was without a doubt New Donk City. Everywhere you turn there's something to discover and I can see spending hours hunting down every last collectible.

I think the absolute most important thing in a game is how much fun it is and I can safely say that this is one of the most fun games I've played this year. This is one game that virtually essential for any Switch owner.

I played through the game with my friend and i can say that this game is amazing! It is however a little short in my opinion but It's still a good time. All of the kingdoms in the game (I think 12 gonna have to check) are brilliantly designed with a lot of variety, negative reviewers either say it's too easy or they put effort into saying why they don't like it. I thought giving a world map for the world of Mario's wold was great providing areas in which we have never seen we always just see the Mushroom Kingdom we may get another game just like it. When i first saw all the worlds you could visit in the game,i was disappointed but after you beat the game you unlock many different things to do if you're a completionist this game is great for you! If you collect all the moons you can unlock many varieties of costumes and an entirely new kingdom! This game is a great time and if it's not for you that's ok, but don't shat out a bad review if you haven't played it. The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage.
