The world is as charming beautiful and creative as ever. Even more spin forbidden west. Jaw dropping vistas like las the reactivated las vegas creates unforgettable moments. The combat is better than ever. The machines are still amongst the best enemies in a video game. The story is still intriguing. The worst thing though is the slow start. The slow start is what makes people view this game as another generic open world game. Which is a shame because this is far from the case. Once you get to the Poseidon and Demeter quest. It’s so incredibly hard to put down. It’s a shame that the horizon series have been overshadowed twice now. A lot of people only take on look at the game and pass judgment without delving deep into it. This game is well worth the purchase. Was the first game I got on ps5 and it disappointed me so much. I love tropical locals and I love Machines. Yet this is a copy paste game, with terrible characters, story, and a glossary of jargon so big without one nothing makes any sense. The jargon is so bad it feels like teen fiction. Most weapons suck. Generic ice bombs or some **** traps… Crafting mid battle is stupid. TropicalWas the first game I got on ps5 and it disappointed me so much. Tropical locals showed off in the state of play trailer and the games cover are tiny. Huge world with nothing in it but the same activities randomly strewed about. Feels like all the people working on the game don’t actually play games…Literally was forcing myself to enjoy it before a glitch snapped me out of it and i just stopped lying to myself and played Ratchet and Clank ( An actually fun game) instead. If they make a third Horizon I wont be buying it. Hugely disappointed. I think Guerrilla should go back to linear games. Expand

I think the people who give this game a bad review are the ones who like to skip cut scenes, side missions and just brag "look how fast i finished the game mommy!" But if you want to take your time explore every settlement when you get to it, then this is a great game. And then you got the "the game is to much like the first one" complaint.....well if it aint broke don't fix it!

Main campaign is quality also is the combat (as Zero Dawn), Tallnecks , Cauldrons & Ruins which are actually a challenge if you don’t cheat by looking for the solution online.
The rest of the stuff like some Side Quests, Gauntlet runs, Errands & Salvage contracts is unnecessary padding which ruins the game IMO.
Also because of the length of the game (due to the boring padding), it’s not something I’d likely return to.
Great game but compleationists will hate!

After finishing Elden Ring I decided to finally sit down and give my time to this game. My experience can be summed up by my most used quotes.

-"Aloy MOVE!!!" -"Why are you so bad at jumping" -"Why can't you actually hit the person that is right in front of you!!!!" -"OMG MOVE ALOY!!!!" -"Seriously! Who runs like that?!!!" -"I hate this game so much!" -"God I hate this game"

The game is beautiful! But the combat is sooo bad!! I am literally forcing myself to push through it! The machines can move across the field in a second, but Aloy has trouble hitting any target in front of her. They built a melee system, but the system has no targeting at all. Every time you go to aim, it's like the AI is programed to notice and forces the machine to move. This is such a frustrating game!!

Good. Not Great. I really wouldn't agree with everyone saying it's better than the original. Bigger is not always better. The main failure is they have gone too heavy with Aloy becoming a bit of a know-all and you feel she is patronizing to the NPC's (leading to alienating the player slightly) due to the script writing. Some of her dialogue is literally cringe-worthy at best. The story becomes very convoluted because of this and there are no real surprises. Aloys constant narrative about where to go and what to do does become grating after a while. If the script was in place then maybe this wouldn’t matter so much and you would overlook it. Where the first game succeeded hugely, I feel this falls flat, if there is a third installment, I hope they can get the script and the flow right. This game should really have been a discovery of the West - like in the first game you felt as the player you were discovering the world and her story, just like she was. The heavy-handed ‘Aloy is here to save the world and she knows everything’ approach really should have been saved for the third game. I REALLY cared about Aloy in the first game – not so much in this one… I felt like I was just along for the ride. Expand

The important stuff that was kind of bad on Zero Down was not improved at all: the jump, climbing, walking over rocks....still feels bad. The brought A LOT of new stuff, but a lot of stuff doesn't mean good stuff. Mostly copied from other games, like pushing blocks to reach second flor (the oldest mechanics in game), the paraglider from Zelda, the grappling hook (that never works as you want it to), they even put a game inside the game very much like Gwent in Witcher 3.
It gives you so much option that serves the same purpose: meals, potions, bravery boost.....and all feel cluttered and meaningless. The bravery boost shows a quick animation video but it doesn't stop the time during it, so if any enemy attacks you during it you gonna die right after the video is over.
Story-wise is the biggest letdown, it starts with a bad intro making it feel like the same game we played before, not showing new areas like the beach was used in the trailers so it would feel new for us....no. It keeps like the same game for most of the way. The story is confusing and just ok.
They stress so much the combos you can make, but in real combats you just keep to avoid the new big guy that throw rocks from wherever he is and always hit you no matter what.

It looks awesome but play worse than Zero Down

I have rated Horizon Zero Down as 7 so I basically have to rate this higher. The game is much better than the previous one. Especially when it comes to repetitiveness. The enemies are much more unique and I was never bored with that game unlike the previous one. The dialogues are little childish but maybe I'm just getting too old..

It looks great and plays great and if I think about it its a bit tougher that the previous game. I am disappointed with the level of customization on offer. And I mentioned the story is crap. The last boss battle makes no sense at all. It feels rushed. The writers were probably given a month to think up a story and they went on a bender for 3 weeks and drunkenly put this together. And now theres going to be a third game with ridiculous antagonist.

Horizon: Forbidden West (HFW) is a sequel to 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn - a game which I loved and platinumed. Because of this, I was incredibly excited to play HFW. Unfortunately, I would not enjoy it nearly as much as the original.

First off, the pros. I enjoyed the story, and the graphics, acting and facial animations are all great. The characters are also a highlight, with Aloy as the obvious standout. I really like when the main character has flaws, as it humanises them more - instead of the standard Mary Sue that a lot of fiction uses.

Sadly, this is where my compliments end. The game strikes me as one where bigger is not always better. I understand that others enjoy it significantly more than I do, and that I'm likely in the minority, but I'll try to explain why the game left me feeling frustrated instead of fulfilled.

While the map size is bigger that the original Zero Dawn, it apparently isn't significantly bigger. This surprised me, as it seems a lot larger when playing - and not in a good way. There is an overwhelming amount to do, and sadly it's not all engaging content. The biome diversity is nice, but it doesn't improve the mindless tasks that litter the map. I feel like the map size could have been cut in half, and it would have resulted in a much tighter experience.

Combat also received an overhaul, and it is perhaps the most frustrating aspect of HFW. Enemies are much more aggressive, and dodging was nerfed. Combine this with the longer animations when recovering, bad hitboxes, and sometimes Aloy refusing to jump 2 feet to hit an enemy, and I found myself avoiding combat whenever possible. This is exacerbated by the sheer number of weapons, outfits, etc. that are present. There are dozens of types of hunter bow, dozens of outfits, dozens of warrior bows, etc. Each one requires separate upgrading, and they all have stats - which make earlier weapons and outfits straight up useless in the later game. I ended up dropping the difficulty down to "Story" so that combat encounters would be over faster - not because I was dying, but because they were tedious.

Now, for the "feel" of the game. Things like traversal and exploration simply didn't feel good. Animations seemed to have a lot of pauses between them, making things like the hookshot feel slow to use. Even climbing felt slow - and while it may be more "realistic", I'm not playing a game set 1000 years in the future with robot dinosaurs for realism. Another common occurrence would be getting stuck on debris during fights or traversal. Tiny rocks will bring Aloy to a complete standstill, or block your path while you're evading an attack. This is constant, and makes the moment to moment gameplay feel awful.

We'll now move on to the technical quality of the game. I'm playing this over 4 months after release, and every play session is plagued by bugs. These can be categorised into serious bugs, and minor issues. On the serious front, I encountered a few cases where quests broke - particularly the melee pits. Fighting the pit master would get stuck, with the quest stating "talk to the pit master". Every time I would deplete his health, he'd get back up and his health would refill. This forced me to quit out of the game, load back in, and then go do other quests before coming back. Another serious bug I encountered was some of the audio cutting out entirely. Music and some sound effects would play, but others wouldn't. This also required me to turn off the game. Another bug that I encountered several times was getting stuck in a combat encounter where the enemy ran off in the opposite direction, and just kept running - resulting me in spending minutes chasing them down to kill them, because without doing that I couldn't save or fast travel.

The minor bugs weren't as bad, but were far more prevalent. This would range from people talking over each other, animals clipping through the ground or just straight up disappearing, Aloy's hair going crazy in cutscenes, the screen randomly fading to black like I had just saved, my mount stuttering and stopping every step, NPCs teleporting around, or items being below the ground and unlootable. I'd generally hit these bugs every few minutes - and it really broke the flow of the game. I can overlook some bugs, but this went far beyond an acceptable handful.

Overall, I can see what the developers were going for, and I can understand why others enjoy the game. For me, however, the game feels like an unfocused and bloated sequel. By the end of the game I was simply trying to speedrun the main mission so that I no longer had to play. I would much prefer a smaller, tighter, and much more refined game - like I got with Zero Dawn. I wanted to like Forbidden West, but I just couldn't.

While I did enjoy most of my 65h playthrough, there are quite a few negative aspects of the game that prevented me to give it a 10/10.
    1. annoying bugs. I've had a Leaplasher jumping all around me as if I didn't exist, duplicated machines that have no physical contact, and audio disappears randomly during cutscenes. not game-breaking, just annoying
    2. the path waypoints need significant rework. it does not point out the exact direction for you, but rather a pre-selected path for you to follow, which means sometimes it will ask you to go in an entirely opposite direction before it redirects you to the right one. it's frustrating and stupid.
    3. some side contents are just BS on any difficulty that is higher than normal, namely the Arena challenges. there is no f-ing way anyone can complete them in such a limited time. and it makes me question the design decisions.
    4. Aloy's character development took a very very long time. i disliked her so much in the beginning, it demotivated me to engage in any side quests because she always says the same thing to everyone who wants to be nice to her, "oops, sorry, no time to talk, gotta go" "I don't need no nobody, I've got a world to save, get outta my way"

Enough ranting. As I said, I still enjoyed the whole game and there are plenty of reasons for me to keep playing. Not to mention the gorgeous graphics and really impressive animation work.

Beside that, the game is amazing and beautiful, but I can't go any further cause reopen the game every time he crashes, kill the mood of anybody.

An OK follow up on Zero Dawn, but with a story lacking and flow to match the ambitions for this follow up. The story and bits were trivial and full our different political views instead of an interesting story like Zero Dawn's many background stories.

The graphics are nice and it plays smooth. It just feels like empty calories after a couple of ours and not an epic adventure again. OK game.

The mini-game has so many rules, and the design is poor too - it's hard to get where is your figure and what it can / can't do. You can't even compare this mini game to Gwent in Witcher 3.

You get to the spacecraft where you feel like your really interacting with the surroundings and the first boss OMG... The snake thing wowwwww I was in awe !

    Then the game starts...

I was disappointed by the lack of animations. You collect a plant and it just disappears, you make a potion and nothing is shown on the screen... then I remembered this is a game about shooting stuff like a one person living army and running all the time...
You never get to breath and look at things after that anymore, you just run your typical boring open world game...
Skip the sidequest they are a waste of time.
The landscape is really only beautiful when lit by the moon at dusk.
I never cared about exp pts and the skill tree, completely irrelevant.
    Attakth game is wasted programming.

Stop trying to do like all those other companies, stick to your strenghts and enhance your main objectif instead of copying every other genre altogether. For the sake of every gamers, stop making sidequests that makes you go back everywhere, which you have already visited because its an OPEN WORLD GAME and lots of them you come back a 3rd time because you don't have something yet to open the passage... It felt like a chore most of the time.

Main quest is good, lost of details about aboriginal cities structures and cultures. Thats it.

    Too many similar items.
    Potions useless
    Food useless
Ultimate they call Valor surge useless
    Armor coloring useless
Every character feels innocent like they were born yesterday...
Most enemies jump like fish out of the water and try to slam you twice...

I wish they cut a 2/3 of this map and made the whole thing deep and thought-out like the beginning,

I think this is the last time I play these kind of games. Even if something feels unique or is good looking graphically. Too much boring and repetitive stuff. Stop it with unreallistic inventories !!!
    I want mature stuff.

I could detect no inspiration or artistry outside of a general "barbarian good!" ethos, and the silhouettes are largely the same bottom heavy, minimal waist, ugly hat theme from the first game. The gameplay is great, outside of the very floaty and unfortunately still amateurish melee system. This includes machine melee attacks with enormous hitboxes and no clear indication of the avoidance window/s. The weapons and upgrade system are noticeably more bloated and cumbersome as well. However, it's mainly the writing and acting, particularly for Aloy, that ruins this game for me. If you don't notice how bad it is I could see how you could really enjoy this game, but once I realized it there was no going back. Aloy mistakes volume for intensity, and since her character has no sense of humor she is almost always intense. Therefore no matter the circumstances, whether it be mourning a death, or scrambling down a hillside pursued by giant machines calling out instructions to some npc, she will speak just above a whisper to let you know she is very serious. I liked her a lot more in the first game, though she was by no means a great character then either. Aloy's responses and actions can be predicted to near certainly after you spend about 30 minutes with her. She will turn down help at every opportunity, since she's the only one on the planet capable of handling danger, and she will speak haughtily and condescendingly to those that ask for help or give advice. Putting aside Aloy's tragic lack of personality, her environmental dialogue, as well as that of any npcs that the game manages to foist on her despite her protests, becomes laughably banal very quick.

Example: Oh look a locked door, I better explain out loud how necessary it is going to be to find a key so that I can open that door. Oh look, a key, I better say out loud that wow, now I can open that door. Oh look, I opened that door, better mention how I should go through that door now to reach the next area... etc. ad infinitum. In fact, the bizarrely hand-holdy nature of all these bits of dialogue was the only thing that caused me to laugh out loud in the game.

The last thing I will mention is the pacing, and it's hard to think of a triple A example where it's done worse. There must have been 400 fetch quest writers for every person working on the main story. The tying of significant abilities to advancement of the rather short main plot while bombarding the player with side quests, many of which they can not complete until they unlock those abilities, feels extremely poorly timed and executed. I was shocked when near the end of the main quest line I unlocked an ability that vastly improved exploration, only for the game to end after basically the very next mission. I feel sorry for whoever put the work into that, since almost all my side quests were done and there was no reason at all to keep playing or exploring.

Too bad. A phrase which literally and figuratively sums up this game on multiple levels. Glad I borrowed instead of bought, and I think I'll just watch a summary of the next one on YouTube since I do like the overall story concept. I put 86 hours into this hoping it would redeem itself, but that was not the case.

Quality mode is tempting. As good as 60fps feels, quality mode looks so much more realistic. There is no right or wrong answer on which mode to play.

The story in the game is just as great as in the prior game. Masterclass is the the best way to describe the story from bits of lore in the world to the main story and side stories. This game is like the PS5’s The Witcher 3 moment. So far, the PS5 has seen a few timeloop games and PS5 upgrades of PS4 games. Only now are we getting a truly giant AAA game to show off the system. (No disrespect to Ratchet and Clank. I’m sure the game is great but at $70, I will wait for a sale.) My play through of this vast world took 89 hours and I still have 11% of the game left to complete (although I have no idea what else I could do!).

The game continues the addicting robot fighting. The same rules apply although traps seem less useful this time, maybe because of the trap limit (starting with 2). The robots seem more aggressive, like they did in the Frozen Wilds expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn. At normal mode, death is no stranger and many fights will exhaust health and healing supplies. Scab your enemies to plan accordingly. Even after finishing the game, I feel the itch to fight machines. Maybe its the design of the beasts. Why is there no toy line to accompany this game?

This game is not perfect. I usually buy a game on sale long after all the bugs are fixed. There are a few graphical issues like items floating or enemies stuck in the environment. The most inconvenient bug is when you cannot interact with a quest item. Reloading from a save point has fixed these problems for me. There are few items and interactive objects that appear as leftovers from the development process. These may be easter eggs.

The game also overestimates my patience for grinding for upgrade gear. Levels are obtained quickly enough that unlocking skills was a non-issue. But upgrading gear is a chore. Too much of a chore. My advice is to select “Custom” for difficulty and choose “Easy Loot”. Even with Easy Loot, you have to destroy a dozen of the same machine to upgrade high level gear. Maybe don’t bother. Many of the upgrade issues have been resolved via patches, and your experience will be better than mine. The robot dinosaur fights have their own issues. Traps seem less useful. The robots are a little too aggressive. You are supposed to shoot off a weapon from the robot and use it against them. Good luck. By the time you pick it up, the robot is on top of you or spamming you with area of effect attacks. The best strategy is always to find a piece of cover above the robot’s spawn point and a safe distance from its area attacks. I would love to see more strategies that are just as viable, such as fighting from a mount or leading the robot into a gauntlet of traps. Or maybe I’m playing it wrong. Sandbox games like this can support many strategies.

All-in-all, Horizon Forbidden West is a must-play experience. Because of the patches since launch, I can give this game a perfect 10/10. However, the game really nails the accessibility options. You will be able to finish this story and have fun doing it. Not sure how you handle a Fireclaw on ultra hard. Those were tough fights.

No doubt a great game, The story is interesting and the combat is consistently engaging, albeit sometimes a little janky with some encounters. The graphics are great, and the art design perfectly compliments the technical aspects.
Where the game falters, though, is almost everything outside of the main story. For me, seeking 100% completion was tedious and ultimately not worth it.

Where the game falters, though, is almost everything outside of the main story. For me, seeking 100% completion was tedious and ultimately not worth it. Specifically the Melee Pits and The Arena challenges. These combat experiences are incredibly annoying and seemed like an afterthought from the devs to just fill the open world with useless time consuming combat. The game would be perfectly fine without these features. I'd much rather developers make the main story longer and more expansive than add random filler combat experiences filled with encounters that aren't anything new.
Some of the side quests are fun, but there are just too many and not enough variety in goals and missions.
Ultimately the main issue for me comes to the open world game design that, despite developers best efforts, feels hollow. However I would certainly recommend the game to pretty much everyone, just maybe stray them away from grinding to 100%. Looking forward to the conclusion of Aloy's story and hopefully other games that develop the story and lore.

Firstly, I feel the fights are not as strategical as its processor and can be chaotic at times and at times I was getting flung around the place like a pinball. The bugs in this game nearly had me close to destroying my controller and are the real disappointment here. The races especially were infuriating, especially when I got stuck against the side, or when Aloy get's stuck against a tree for instance when trying to flee the chaotic fights. The vista points were equally just as frustrating and I just ended up googling them to get the answers and have them out of the way. All in all a great game which just fell short from being a classic. Hopefully in the months that come, there are fixes that sort these issues. Expand

The actions of the hero and the passage of side tasks do not affect the final result in any way, it's a pity for the time spent.
On the positive side, beautiful graphics and pleasant, complex and varied gameplay, sometimes challenging at high levels of difficulty.

Great game, worth buying. Story is fun and there is loads of optional stuff to also enjoy.
The puzzles in this game aren't particularly great. It's always just something being in a hidden place which gets annoying. Why don't you just show me where everything in and then have a specific way of it going together? That is much more fun then just hiding something in a stupid place.

There is a few bugs. Sometimes textures bugged and stuff aswell.
Humans survive headshots (Hard difficulty). Surviving a headshot is just stupid. Why not just have stronger armour?
This game also has way to much grinding. Like for example the arena has 20 rounds all must be completed within a certain time but the time isn't easy to beat at all so it's rinse and repeat. You should still receive rewards for the completion then lock a gold trophy behind the time limits. At the moment you get nothing unless you beat the time?
I feel like most of the stuff in this game is stupidly long winded. I don't mind stuff that takes long but when everything takes long it gets boring and repetitive. If I wanted a long grindy game I would download an MMORPG. All of this is of course optional so you can just skip it and do main missions. But the best weapons in the game ten to be locked behind the grind content.
Some machines don't feel as balanced either which is weird because this wasn't an issue on the 1st game. Like the Tremortusk is harder to kill then most of the bosses that you come across it after? The Tremortusk on 2 occasions has shot me down and continued to shoot me whilst I'm unable to move, completely wiping a full health bar? This is after being 15 levels higher then the quest to kill one?
I do like allot of the balancing that's been added thou. Plus weapons now have their own unique elements rather then 1 size fits all like in the previous game. Coils are now a small bonus rather then making up for 75% of the weapon.
You can now upgrade weapons giving you something extra to work towards if you want an aid on your journey. There is plenty more to do and explore.
Side missions are now much improved rather then feeling like a longer errand like before. The game is great fun but I just wish the devs didn't wanna make everything be a grind. I know these things are optional but it's about finding the balance of what should be simple and what should be a long puzzle. It's like this game is Tomb Raider robot extinction addition.
The story in this game does a great job in honouring the 1st game making sure that it remains consistent and doesn't completely forget about certain aspects. I always wanted to know what happens next. Allot of games tend to have a great start then just slowly spiral down hill but that is not the case with either of the horizon games. I highly recommend you play Zero Dawn before this one but you could get away with not doing so. But you will find this game far more fun if you do play the 1st one before.

People also need to stop post bad reviews because Sony blocked the store in their region. This is not an issue with the game but an issue with Sony.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

And the good part about that is the fact Guerrilla learned from the first game and designed all of the side stuff excellently in this game. One of the most notable differences for me was the huge change to character animations during cutscenes or whilst talking to NPC’s, making it feel a lot smoother. Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
