Gameplay improvements and visuals are amazing. The new enemy types are cool and welcomed. Alloy is slightly less likeable in this game but the supporting crew makes up for that. i highly recommend this game. 9/10

I really wanted to play this game, after the first part I remained in anticipation of the continuation of the series of games. But in Kazakhstan they have disabled the ability to buy the game on-line, and I am very upset. I hope in the near future Sony will solve something with the problem of buying games in their store

Best game I've played in a very long time. The graphics are nothing less than amazing, and the upgrades from the previous game are plentiful. What amazes me the most is how even the side missions have so much content and story that they end up feeling like part of the main quest. Gorilla and Sony did an amazing job. This is definitely game of the year for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers are at the end of this review; I will mark before starting into them.

This game builds successfully on the gameplay of the original, adding new machines, weapons, and play styles. It successfully deepens the combat, making melee combat somewhat more viable, and human enemies a bit more challenging than the previous game (where they were quite dumb). Taking down machines remains one of the most satisfying combat experiences in any game. Finishing it took me about 50 hours: that includes doing all of the side quests that I found, but ignoring the vast majority of errands and collection quests. I appreciated how the optional content was truly optional: I don't feel that I missed anything crucial by avoiding types of quests I didn't feel like completing.

It was also completely gorgeous on the PS5. If you have one, I can't overstate: play this game. I have complaints, sure, but it's very good, and I wouldn't be giving it a 9.0 if it wasn't. It takes the original game, and improves on it in almost every conceivable way. If you liked the original, I don't see how you could not like this.

It's not all perfect though: sadly the story is a letdown vs the previous game. It's not bad: the scenario is just far more generic than the previous game—which had one of the greatest stories in a video game, ever—and isn't super engaging. Its beats and betrayals were obvious, and it didn't really satisfy. However, it's pretty well told, and so while it's maybe not the reason to keep playing as in Zero Dawn, it's not like it's going to make you stop playing. I did like the various relationships you built throughout the game however, and the characters are likable. I would've liked to see more side quests with them by your side.

The weapons: there were just too many of them. That was fine, and it didn't ruin my enjoyment in any way, I just ignored a lot of them. Also upgrades were difficult to perform on most "very rare" and above weapons without actively seeking out the materials, and in the end I just left most of them fairly un-upgraded. It would've been nice to be able to find other ways to do so; by the end of the game I had stacks of cash, nothing to spend it on, and a bunch of un-upgraded weapons. Kind of a bummer.

I also would've loved to see expanded stealth options. Also just like the last game the pain of thinking you're hitting "stealth attack" only to have it change at the last second, causing you to jump out of cover with a feeble attack is very real, and happens too often.

    Spoilers about story below:

This game has middle-of-a-trilogy syndrome in its story; the "resolution" at the end was a total letdown because you discover "oh no, a huge threat is coming (please wait until the next game)" without feeling like you've really "won" in the scheme of things. That's… fine, honestly. But paired with the overall predictable story it left me feeling pretty empty by the end. I don't think I'm giving it a fair shake in the scope of "video game stories" which are almost universally bad, and this one was fairly alright. But after how good Zero Dawn was, it is a disappointment. Especially for a game that overall builds and improves on every aspect of the previous game, except for this. Also a few scenes are just very badly written (I'm thinking specifically of the audience with the Chorus at Plainsong).

The original writer had nothing to do with this, as far as I can tell, and it shows. I hope they shape it up for the (obviously planned) sequel.

Still: it's a really good game! I'll be excited to see some DLC for it, and the sequel.

Locations of interest and dungeons are starting to become repetitive, and as a completionist this is extremely frustrating because I like to check every question mark available.

Combat is the same as before with machines being overly aggressive which makes combat a rolling/concentration fest with a lot of traps that in the end like in the first game becomes repetitive and unsatisfying. Spear combat has improved for sure, but I rarely use it when fighting machines unless I go for critical hits.

aloy although retaining most of her skills and abilities from the first game got nerfed in weird areas and now even the weapons are nerfed and you need to level your weapons if you want real damage also most weapons got nerfed in terms of recourses for arrows because they were "to strong in the first game"

the only good add ons to this game are without a doubt the swimming and the special abilities every weapons has

but most of the time most of the things in the game felt like a check list of oh breath of the wild had a glider lets add a glider or the Witcher had a cool mini game lets add a cool mini game which the game didn't need and it didn't fit in the world of horizon

Bandit camps are also suffering from past game’s direction, stealth in this game is never as satisfying and not there yet and it feels like they don't really fit and make sense in this game

also aloy talks wayyyyy to much at some point i had to lower the dialog volume because she kept saying obvious things that i can clearly see for myself

in short the game feels like a better looking and better feeling expansion for zero dawn it felt like i played this game before because it just copies and check marks a lot of preview third person open world games

i wont even bother giving a proper review to this game because i already reviewed zero dawn and this game feels for better or worse exactly like it

so my final score to this game is a 7.5 out of 10 its a good console game and fun at times but just feels like an over priced slightly better expansion to zero dawn rather then game of its own.

It's good, but not quite what I was hoping for after a five-year wait. Like I mentioned, I was very much in on this for a continuation of the story from the groundbreaking original game, but I was left with the distinct impression that not much had been resolved in terms of plot points or my lore questions. In many ways, the can had just been kicked down the road for the next installment, and that's a disappointing thing to have to endure after a half-decade's patience.

Back in 2017, open world game design was already stale, but robot dinosaurs and the overall setting were intruiging enough for me to enjoy Zero Dawn to completion. For Forbidden West, that intrigue is completely gone. The graphical presentation is amazing, but the gameplay is stale and rote. Every system is technically improved, but nothing feels truly innovated on.

Finding a new mount is a pain. Discovering a new location, only to be locked out by yet another tool is frustrating. The open world is largely barren, apart from machine encounters that have lost their excitement. Aloy's personality is way more annoying than before, and her constant mumbling is intolerable. The micromanagement and poor controls during combat make it a slog. The game pushes me away at every turn. Hell, the glider is hardly even useful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is truly incredible. I have never seen such a beautiful open world in all of my gaming adventures since the days of Skyrim. If you’re wondering whether or not you should play Zero Dawn first, the answer is YES. Its story is fantastic and so lore heavy that newcomers to the franchise would be overwhelmed if Forbidden West was their introduction to the series. This game’s quests are refreshingly engaging and story-driven. They don’t become repetitive like so many other games in the genre. I was thrilled when I learned we would have new mounts to ride, but I never would’ve guessed we’d be flying around on Sun Wings! That was such a pleasant surprise. The flying can be a bit janky and considerably slow, but I get that such elaborate environments take time to load into view. It’s also worth mentioning that the voice & motion-capture performances of the actors were out of this world! Everyone was incredible, but I think that Angela Bassett stole the show as the (initial) antagonist. Every scene with her character (Regalla) gave me chills. My only complaint with Forbidden West is the direction the story went. Zero Dawn did an amazing job toeing the line between reality & fiction, whereas FW takes a deep dive into sci-fi and it can be a little bit jarring from clones to aliens (I am exaggerating a bit). The surprise antagonists toward the end of the game just seemed poorly thought out. They weren’t present for very long, and the final battle was just bland compared to other moments in the game. We had no time to become emotionally invested in any of it. What’s worse is that the villain that gets set up for the next game seems even worse. I can’t help but think of the missed opportunity they had to bring back Ted Faro as the ultimate antagonist. Everybody wants a piece of that guy. What they did instead felt like the ultimate let down. And then there’s Gaia. I had always imagined that we would work toward the end goal of rebuilding Gaia and it would be the ultimate emotional payoff that would have us sobbing. Instead we revive her early in the game, and she & Aloy’s introduction is awkward and anticlimactic. It’s these aspects of the story that make me wonder whether or not the writers truly understood the themes they conveyed in the original game. Granted, it’s difficult to tell a compelling story after saving the world the first time. The stakes will never be higher. But griping aside, I absolutely loved playing this game and can’t get enough of its combat & machine variety. I love the complexity of how to fight something and where to hit it that seems inspired by games like Monster Hunter World. Everything about it was groundbreaking and blew me away overall (with the exception to the second half of the story). Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend it. Expand

First of all Aloy is absolutely beautiful, and second even if she wasn't it is insane to give a bad rating because you don't find the female main character unattractive. Shame on you misogynic haters. Feels like Aloy is dealing with idiots not only inside the game.
Now to the gameplay. Horizon: Forbidden West is setting a new standard in graphics, must be the best looking game I have ever played so far (I think no one can deny this). The voice acting (especially the difference in tone between Aloy & Beta) is amazing. They improved a lot of aspects people suggested after Part 1 - better facial animations, more free climbing and a grapple hook system, and at least they tried to make better side quests. The flying option is magical, how the Slitherfang wriggles up on rocks or small towers is so intimidatingly cool, there are new interesting twists to the cauldrons and the Tallnecks, the new diving system especially in LasVegas is nice. The landscape is far more diverse and richly filled with life - really breathtaking landscapes, I like the many Faro robot corpses lying around together with other leftovers from the war, especially amazing are the Horus Titans here and there - you can see the war was far more intense in the West than in the areas in part 1. The story is a good continuation but fails to reach the originality and goose bump moments of part 1. I also like the development of Aloys character and I love the new introduced characters.
But there are negative aspects too, the weapon system became too complicated (f.e. too many amunition types, some of them don't even have a explanation or not as effective as the were in the first game) and the spear became quite useless (can't upgrady anymore, machines constantly stunlock you with damage too fast before you can combi attack them). So I liked the fighting system a lot more in Part1. I am still missing interesting side quests (the side character related quests were a good improvement tho), and I don't understand why the really nice flashpoint option to chose between dialogues (heart, brain, fist) is so rarely used. I also miss the wonderful richness of audio and text massages to find about what happened in the past (but this is kind of owed to the fact Aloy already knows most thing about past, the datapoints were one of my highlights in part1) - most of the ones in part 2 are quite boring. Upgrading good gear or armour becomes too hard after the first or second upgrade already.
Overall Forbidden West is a 8+/10, sadly still not a masterpiece. They improved a lot of aspects while in most other aspects they failed to reach the greatness of part 1. I am really looking farward to part 3 and my biggest wish remained unfullfilled - I WANT TO FIGHT A HORUS TITAN!!! EVERYONE WANTS TO FIGHT ONE OF THESE MONSTERS!!! :D PLEAAAASEEEE!

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
