The game's story is quite boring and after a few hours I started skipping dialogues. I don't know if anyone can manage to listen to all the dialogues including a ton of optional ones. I hope the next part of the game will contain half of the content but will offer interesting gameplay and a main storyline. Graphics 9.5/10, game mechanics 6/10. Expand

What an amazing ride! I personally played on easy on the PS5 and enjoyed the spectacle and pacing of the narrative. Almost every frame is a work of art. It’s amazing that it’s all in real time. The mechanics feel refined over the original so I’m definitely going to play on a harder difficulty on my next play through.

The enemies animate so well, the environments are dense and intricately

If you have any time to spare at all, Forbidden West is worthy of it.

I started on hardest as always and the game is clearly not made for that. Biggest issue in is movement since it also affects lower difficulties. Aloy often jumps on walls during fight and its very slow animation both up and down. Since on hardest its either 50% hp or instakill, if this happens you are dead. Another movement problem is mount. It gets constantly stuck on smallest bumps and since everything giving me IK mount is actually slower than walking because of really good chance that you will just get killed when you cant move for 20 sec. Why i do think game is not made for hardest difficulty is amount of grind you need. Health bars of machines are something. It became common thing for me that I just cant finish quest bc i just shot 100 expensive arrows to weak point I run out of ammo and machine is like nothing. That is very annoying since game makes you to grind in order to progress the story, because its not really about skill but about numbers. So you cant check how much hp enemies have that means you also have no idea if you are prepared enough. Now you have to grind, well not I have side quests right? You do but they are no different to grind maybe even worse. Constatly same premises "machine problem", "rescue" or "we need supplies". Dont get me wrong every rpg have this thing, problem is they cant make side characters interesting. They always just whine and ask you for help or they are arrogant and you prove them wrong. There is nothing interesting about them which is sad bc there is **** load of side quest. Maybe it changed later but after 15th side quest im just skipping scenes because scooby doo had more different stories than this side quests. Only thing I enjoyed is main story, plot is changing and kinda mysterious thats why i dont rate it as total garbage. Idk maybe if I put it on easy i would enojyed game since i could progress in main story which is only interesting and new thing compared to ZD but that's game fault. Expand

I liked first game but Forbidden West is boring and dull. I don't like dialogues, i don't like side quest and i don't like pase and sequence of the plot. The game is not for fans of first game but for who then? For sjw activists? because the only thing that i see clearly is "diversity".

An absolutely stellar game -Great combat, fighting anything has so much depth and strategy behind it. Even the human enemies have received a massive overhaul -great exploration, that glider is a godsent, unique scenarios around the world -good story though stakes weren't as high as the first game -Great boss fights. -Great open world lots of lush biomes each with its own distinct visuals.
-Great side quests, some of which also change the landscapes and clan leaders. Overall had fun 90% of the time
    -great customization options
-great weapon variety each with their own skills and moves -Elaborate skill tree -The combat has so much more to offer than what it did in the first game -Machine strike mitigate was fun same thing as gwent in Witcher 3
-great visuals especially on 60 fps performance mode on ps5
    Cons
-Lmae ass melee combat. They need to scrap it in the next game and fully focus on range combat --Not much variety in world activities
-managing coils and loots is a nightmare -Robotic npcs and dead towns -copy pasted settlements, you won't see any city on the grand scale as meridian in the first game.

Horizon Forbidden West doesn't quite live up to the previous installment, it's more Horizon but feels quite a bit more clunky and bloated to it's predecessor and would have been better if it had a more focused approach. It's another game that had me missing probably quite entertaining content because I was bored and just wanting to finish the main story.

The combat in this game felt like a huge downgrade, weapons like the cannister rope gun seemed entirely pointless because the creatures move so fast it's impossible to actually ignite the cannisters once they've been attached. Maybe this is a different story on PC.

Every dialogue interaction is so drawn out I found myself hitting skip, sometimes less is more.

    Pros:
    Excellent presentation
Good map design and interesting locations
    Good weapon selection
    60FPS for fluid gameplay

    Cons:
    Clunky combat
    Hours of quite boring dialogue
Clunky controls (Swinging to hit an enemy and flopping off a cliff happened frequently)
Unintuitive Control Scheme (I found myself pressing the wrong button constantly)
Far too long (too many sidequests and too much filler content)

Forbidden west is a true masterpiece.
Better than the original in almost everything.
Great story, great characters and mega art direction/graphics. For me the only flaw was some aspects of the gameplay design, mainly in climb controls and some in combat. I do think they have some more ground to cover in the gameplay design to make it more precise and responsive. And NO microtransaction

Beautiful graphics and interesting gameplay were ruined for me by the portrayal of Alloy as condescending and arrogant toward the people she runs into on her journey. I'm not sure why writing for the second installment took such a turn for the worse after a decent story of the first game.

Most things served a purpose and there was a manageable quantity of "things" to collect and do. In Forbidden West I feel that they just got the "content fever" that plague so many open world games. They put too much of everything. There so much crafting parts that you now have to use a lot of time specifically to get parts, it's fun at first but it becomes redundant very fast. There are so many weapons and armor with very minor differences between them that it isn't so obvious what the purpose of each is.

This game is still enjoyable, though I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to finish it. I much preferred Zero Dawn which I completed pretty much entirely. Developers should stop designing jobs into their games, that's not what I'm playing them for. If you're a fan of tons of more or less significant content you'll have a lot of fun with this game, if not, it'll most likely feel tiring at some point. I preferred the more focused approach of Zero Dawn.

Horizon Forbidden West is very visually impressive and plays well enough too. Unfortunately, it feels very outdated at the same time with predetermined climbing selections, a very limited arsenal, no friendly NPC interactions/reactions when attacked, etc.

It oddly feels a lot like Far Cry which adds to an overly familiar and boring experience imo. I think new gamers will enjoy it, but

Let’s talk about the positives parts first. The game is absolutely gorgeous in both performance and Quality thanks to recent update that solve most of the problems of performan even tough they still are pop up that subsist and some shimmering but it is one of the most beautiful game I ever play. The character models and animation improved a lot compared to Zero Dawn. Some of the side stories are really well written and may feel even better than the main quests. If you are used to play open world adventure games, you might be able to at least appreciate this game.

Let’s talk about the negative parts know. The worst part in my opinion is the combat system, it was already bad in Zero Dawn and while it improved a little it still doesn’t live up to today’s standards. You can’t lock your ennemies so if they jump or fly too much or you are fighting multiple robots at the same, it becomes an unfun mess. Not quiet sure how the devs fought it was find not to include a lock system for the enemies but here we are, the combat are the worst gameplay parts in the game. And while dodging enemies attacks, it’s not rare to get stuck on parts of the decor that you couldn’t see thanks to the bad camera. The AI that « help » you on some fights are completely useless. The main story isn’t that good either, it tries too hard and some parts are hard to swallow or make little sense even of the game take action in the 30th century. The game took a lot of inspiration on other popular games like Breath of The wild, The Witcher, AC, Mass Effect but somehow manage to do less than all of those games in the part or copied. And if you enjoyed the liberty that some of those games gave you in character building, you are out of like. The game barely let you make any decisions and you can’t really influence Aloy personality and how she choses to deal with things. For a true RPG fan, it might be a big deal. The games still to this day still have technical issues and bugs, I got stuck in the air and it decors a few time or enemies that walk on the air, their AI isn’t that good either, you can walk in front of them and they won’t see you. The combat system is just weak and boring. In that kind game, not being able to influence the conversation makes you care less and not wanting to listen to all of those conversations. So yeah if you are used to some higher profile RPGs, this game is playable but it won’t live to those standards.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Forbidden West is pretty much the same deal as Zero Dawn (obviously excluding the story). The open world is rich with various sidequests and activities to do. The graphics, facial animations and lip synching are among the best I've ever seen yet, and the voice acting, particularly from Ashly Birch as Aloy is great. Unfortunately it's just not as good. It consists of a decent story but ends inconclusively, the climbing controls are even more finnicky and unresponsive than the first one, the underwhelming combat was not improved, the tutorials and challenges in the melee pits are simply badly designed and there are way more bugs including some that even required me to reload a save. That would've been acceptable had it only affected the PS4 version, but there's no excuse for it to happen on PS5. It's still mostly a fun game, just a step back. Bigger but not better. Expand

The overarching story has no real direction other than to stop a group of enemies (humans that escaped the old world thousands of years ago and have extended their lives with technology) from ending the world. You stop them and then you learn there is a messy blob of mechs and AIs following the old humans through outer space to Earth to kill them, oh boy that's some lazy BS from writers setting up Part 3. There are some nice sub-stories regarding the relations of various tribes, and many side quests are actually entertaining, but the main course is just bad. Whereas in Zero Dawn we had a slowly unfolding mystery that captivated us and carried us to the end.

Aloy in this game is just an emotionless piece of wood. She learns some news, doesn't care. Someone talks to her, she acts bored. An emergency happens, apathy. She escapes death, she's cool. She's being flirted by the final boss (a scene that made me cringe...), acts like it didn't happen. I could go on and on. Where is the Aloy from Zero Dawn who wanted to passionately discover the world and worried to save humanity from the machines?

Melee combat was poor on Zero Dawn. It has been vastly improved compared with Zero Dawn's simplistic one-button attacks, but it's still nowhere near decent. There are various combos to learn but are a bit complex for an action game, and timings to continue combos are vague. It's not as difficult as a fighting game, but I skipped most of the melee combat because it's not intuitive and good enough, unlike 2018's God of War or other action games.

The game's world map is undeniably gorgeous. There are definitely cues taken from Zelda: Breath of the Wild in how you traverse the world. By the game's end you even unlock a robotic pterosaur to fly anywhere you want to, much quicker than on foot or by riding a quadruped machine.

Graphics in this game are very good for what is a cross-gen game that has to run on PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5. On PS5 you can choose between Fidelity Mode (30 fps at 4K), Performance Mode (60 fps at 1800p checkerboard) and a new Balanced Mode (the Fidelity Mode at 40 fps with dynamic resolution). There is even an option for VRR if you have a VRR-compatible screen. I played the game at 60 fps even though the Performance Mode hadn't been patched yet. It used to be plagued by shimmer and blur, but it was fixed a few months ago and it looks very nice and clean, finally.

Even if you are a fan of Zero Dawn and want to see what happens next, I'd advise to buy this game only when on a big sale. Full price is definitely not worth it. And keep your expectations low.

Here are eight reasons why this game is worse than its predecessor:

    - Bugs and glitches
The game started right away with a game breaking progression bug in the tutorial (Seriously? Get your **** together Guerilla Games) and overall its one of the worst PS4/5 exclusives on the technical side. Bugged quests, bugged npcs, bugged enemies, Aloy has broken hair physics all the time, and lots and lots of minor stuff. HZD was clearly better in that department.

    - Clunky controls
Playing the game feels way worse now. Its still not bad but not nearly as smooth as HZD. Lots of stuff has weird controls, for example you have to awkwardly jump up to activate your grappling hook, and when you want to drag stuff with it you cant move by yourself. Wtf? Combat is imprecise due to a missing lock on system, puzzling is often very tedious, climbing is janky, and diving is a hot mess with a broken camera.

    - No next gen graphics
As the title reads, the graphics are good for a PS4 game but native PS5 games like Rift Apart or Demon´s Souls are outclassing HFW. The game doesnt look much better than HZD five years ago.

    - The Zelda BotW ripoff glider sucks
Its slow, the flying animations look terrible, and the open world simply doesnt provide the verticality to use it effectively. BotW is the most vertical open world game ever and even had insane stuff like downhill paths that where play tested to have the perfect angle so you can smoothly glide over them. HFW doesnt have any of this. The glider is so useless that I often forgot it existed.

    - The Witcher 3 Gwint ripoff minigame is boring
The presentation is stale, it lacks good music, and there arent nearly enough people to play against. You cant play during missions or against other characters. Its bare bones compared to Witcher 3 or RDR2 minigames.

    - More bad story
The weakest aspect of HZD was its weak story with poor writing and generic characters, so in HFW you have way more story with way more boring dialogue and fifteen minute long cut scenes. Its often very annoying. Skip Skip Skip.

    - Identity politics
I rarely complain about these things, Im a tolerant person and I think everyone should get a fair and equal chance. But in this game its just aggravating. HFW makes almost every white person in the game look like an unsympathetic prick. Most of the population in this game is black/hispanic/asian anyway but almost every time you seen a white man or woman they have a very ugly or evil face and voice and they do dumb and evil things. Why? HZD handled this much better.

    -Price tag
This game is $80 on PS5, which is a straight up scam because the PS4 version is $70 and contains a free PS5 upgrade. There is no point in buying the PS5 version at all. Besides that no game should be $80. I bought this game for $25 on discount. Dont buy $80 games!

    Summary:
They tried to make the sequel bigger and better, with more features and stuff to do, but all they came up with was copying other games while they made the things that made HZD a good game worse. Also the PS4 is probably holding the game back but that doesnt excuse all the technical issues. The game still has good graphics, gameplay and exploration. But it just seems game developers can go to the best universities and learn how to make the best graphics and animations, but talent and genius like the teams behind Zelda and Elden Ring have is something you cant learn anywhere. This game isnt a masterpiece, its a fairly solid entertainment product but nothing more. And it lacks the novelty from the first game. 7/10

the only criticism i have is that the story does not feel as unique and exciting as i thought. it's very predictable and does not have this surprising moments as in the first game also Aloy sometimes has uncanny facial expressions and looks weird in some scenes.

I was looking forward to this game all year. The first Horizon is one of my favorite games and was not disappointed with the sequel. However, I think the combat feels worse than the first one and the parkour seems off too. I played this right at launch so maybe they tweaked it since but I haven't dabbled with it since I beat it. I enjoyed the first one a lot more. Maybe due to being introduced to the world for the first time and falling into love with the lore and this one just carried on from the previous one. I still enjoyed it but overall felt like it was a step back besides the graphics and the glider.

It's okay, beautiful to look at but it just turns into another open world map marker slogfest. The combat is pretty awful. Dodging is pointless because it seems every enemy attack homes in on you so it becomes less about skill and more about how many healing items you have on you. I'd give it a miss and play Elden Ring instead.

    2. A game touting its accessibility features lacks the easiest to implement of all, a colorblind filter.
2a. How many purple items are there in this game anyways?
    3. Guerilla Games is attempting to rely on the hyper-realistic graphics, while offering zero substance or innovation for gameplay, story, narrative, dialogue, or character development.
    4. Absolutely zero water collision mechanics between the playable character and the water.
    5. Character models are very poorly optimized in their routing.

I was waiting for half a year for bugs to be fixed and some of them are quite persistent. Can you imagine, that in this game sometimes the loot just disappears in front of your face? And this is happening with stupid random loot system. Weapons irritated me the most. Like why do you put the same effects for arrows or bombs or whatever in the same weapon? Why do I grind like an insane person to get a legendary bow and you give me normal arrows and two types of plasma arrows with different amount of damage? Why some blue and purple weapons are better and more interesting in terms of projectiles than legendary? Costumes don't even worth all the hustle you have to go through. Why some details on machines just disappear if you don't shoot them before it dies? How stupid is that? What difference does is make if I shoot it or don't shoot it? It's just a drag to make it longer. I don't even want to start talking about weapon improvement and how much time you need to improve each weapon and armour.

Climbing is an unresponsive joke where you have to click R3 every time to check if Alloy can climb.
Movement on top of machines is like a hello to Roach from Witcher 3. It catches every bush, tree and stump and doesn't move anymore. If you made it like a shout-out to Geralt - good job there.

The ending was clearly remade to make the third game, because it is sooo stupid. I'm 100 percent sure, that originally this was planned like a final ending and was changed to get some more buck from the 3rd game.

I can mention some positives as well:
For example character animations in dialogues are great (even though the dialogues themselves are too long and mostly boring). For some reason reminded me of Cyberpunk animations is dialogues a bit.
The world looks great (even though it has lots of limitation in terms of graphics because of PS4 version).

Sony, don't play these games with us. Don't even try CoD or Assassin's Creed business model - it will backfire.

Game mechanics are tedious and a total joke. Shooting arrows when the monsters move like lightning and stun you. This game forces you to play in this fashion: dodge-roll, shoot, dodge-roll. That's it. Stealth is worthless. If you don't like shooting tiny hit-boxes, well too bad. That's all you will be doing.

Quests are derivative. Gameplay reminiscent of the 2000 era. Do yourself a favor and buy Elden Ring instead. This game is nothing but a quick cash-grab by a lazy developer who likes to borrow ideas from others, because there aren't creative to begin with.
At least with the first game you kinda felt the effort. With this? It just wastes your time with a dull story, bad overall quest design, stupendous Ai where robots stand still while you fire arrows in their skulls, dozens of bugs & glitches, horrible and confusing UI, lackluster melee combat and multiple crashes all for $70. It's not worth the disc it's printed on.

For me, two things let down the game which also let down the first game. 1. The world feels very empty. Very lifeless. I easily got bored and lost interest in the world. It got to the point where the world just felt boring and towards the end I didn’t feel like exploring the world anymore. 2. The side quests just like the first game felt very tedious and time consuming. It got to the point where I couldn’t care less about the side quests, especially the side characters and their stories, who they are, what they do, how they got into that particular situation and their struggles. The side characters weren’t unique enough from the other side characters. I didn’t care what happened to them and weren’t interested in them at all. The main quest was very entertaining, the main characters I did care about. The combat, gameplay, and graphics are some of the best I have experienced in my time as video game player which is why it merits an 8/10. If the former is rectified in the third and final game then it will easily be a 9 or maybe even a 10.

It’s like they copied the giant spiderweb trait trees from FF15. I’ll be honest, I did not want to grind gear, weapons and coils so I played most of the game on easy and story mode.

Environment- it’s beautiful, but the color palette was all the same as Zero Dawn. You don’t feel like the world is anything new. (except for the beaches). When I finished the story, I had no desire to go back into the world and finish 6000 more side quests.

In summary I think Guerrilla games tried to do too much with Forbidden West's gear and upgrading systems. It was already at a fine point in the original game. I would have MUCH rather seen Guerrilla put more effort into the middle game story and fleshing out the Tenakh characters to be more likeable.

Absolutely beautiful game. And i want to make a point in a word "GAME". Many high rated projects lack gameplay these days and are good FILMS, with linear, boring gameplay.
There is a Great story and a stunning gameplay, with GREAT side quests, highly recommend.
This game is all about WANTING to explore every bit of the huge world you are in.
    11 out of 12!!!

I loved HZD. But Forbidden west disappoints. It’s just kinda average, it feels like a filler game. And the fact that aloy bosses me around and tells me what to do and talks to herself is quite annoying. I’ve never played a game with built-in spoilers like this before. Very disappointing.

I initially wrote a pretty bad review, mostly because of the graphics artifacts / shimmering / blurry quality. Those things have been fixed, so now the game deserves it's proper score.
The game still suffers from wokeness with a few references and influences.
And lacks a little bit of innovation from the first game. Edit --------- Game is woke a every corner. They use every chance

Game is woke a every corner.
They use every chance they get, to tell you WHAT TO THINK
They use every chance to tell you, how evil men are, especially white men.
And how wonderful, smart and powerful women are.
There is 76 genders in the game, and some is currently transitioning.
    This game is a joke.

This is the perfect example of a potential masterpiece that gets bogged down by too side content. The side quests and errands are substantially longer in HFW than they were in HZD, and there are a lot of them. The fact that a thunderjaw in a side quest was more of a struggle than the actual main endgame bosses just shows how immersion breaking and anticlimactic it ends up making the game. Hopefully Horizon 3 ends up being more innovative and going deeper into Sci-Fi with less emphasis on tribal and blood feuds. Expand

One of the best Open World games so far. Graphic is really mindblowing. Gameplay is also great, especially the combat. I also liked the riddle ruines. The Story is I would say ok, but not as good or groundbreaking as in part 1, but I expected this.

They have "overdone" it a bit in my opinion with the amount of weapons, items and upgrade options. This was better balanced in part 1. But

They have "overdone" it a bit in my opinion with the amount of weapons, items and upgrade options. This was better balanced in part 1. But lot's of Open world games have this problem of too much content. Maybe they fear people complain if it is to less, and rather add 3 new weapon categories than getting complains for "not enough gameplay"

The story is I would say all in all ok, not as good as in part one, but It would have been nearly impossible to repeat this. Zero Dawn was great because the world was completely new. You had no idea what happened, and it was great to find all the clues so at the end you understand all of it. It would have been quite difficult to repeat this, and dangerous. If you give people a too different game, they may complain as well.

Of course In Forbidden West they also added some "political correctness" stuff to the game, like it "must" be done now for every game now. I assume this is the reason for some bad reviews here. I'am also not a big fan of this. For this I would reduce the score at about 0.5 because of this. 0.3 for the story and 0.2 for too complex weapon system. So at the end it is still a 9/10.

    Now, waiting for the DLC.

Great sequel to the Zero dawn. As it continues where it ended from the first part. Love the new mechanics and enemies. Only met some glitches, but its fast to reload the game with this console.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon: Alloy's quest to get more titles than Daenerys

I don't think I have ever both loved and hated a game like I did Forbidden West. At some points, it can be stunning and entertaining while sometimes so dull, boring and uninspired.

Technically, there weren't many issues. Occasional bugged quest here, clipping there. Especially Alloy's braids. I swear those things are alive! Dialogues could use a bit of polish.

Gameplay is pretty much the same as in HZD with few very nice QoL features like glider, stash and finally a frelling FLYING MOUNT. Melee combat got a bit of love with some eye candy combos but is still far inferior to ranged combat. Still no block. Why? New weapon types - some great, some not so great. Prompts (critical/silent strike...) were very inconsistent. New machine types were awesome.
The world is beautiful with plenty of extra stuff to do/explore but the resource farming was a bit too much and the climbing is the ABSOLUTE WORST.

Story is... meh. Too many plot holes, predictable. HZD made my eyes water (in a good way). HFW made my eyes roll. The last mission was very disappointing. It was basically just few Spectres, climbing, one fight against a single Zenith, climbing and then a fight against another Zenith in a Power Ranger morph of a machine very easy to beat (had more trouble fighting enemies like apex Thunderjaw/Stormbird). The majority of the final battle happened in the background.

Characters? That's a big WTF from me. Characters is where "the message" comes in. BIG TIME. Cranked up to the 11^2. There's plethora of new characters and, without any exaggeration, 98% of them are either black or female (mostly both though). If I don't count badguys, a-holes or straight up morons there are only FOUR! white man characters with more than 2 lines of dialogue. One is Erend who was shamelessly reduced to a comic relief and mule who gets smacked around by a (female of course) vegan hippie. The other three are literal clowns... oh sorry... performers.
Everywhere you go, every time you meet a new group or find a new settlement, a woman is the leader. Most of the quest givers are women and men are just the weaklings you need to go save in that quest. There are two enemy human factions. Guess who is leading both of them? A black women. During one of the ingame activities you start hearing about this tenakth called The Enduring. A legendary warrior who was never beaten and very few people earned the right to even challenge The Enduring. You obviously earn that right, you go to the challenge site and who is waiting for you there? A little scrawny old (no joke she's at least 60) woman who happens to be the toughest human enemy in the game (including Eric, the only Zenith you actually fight directly).
I like Tomb Raid series. I consider HZD to be one of the best games. I always play a female character if the game allows me so no, I am not just another guy who hates powerful women. Forbidden West just took it way, WAY too far and for all the wrong reasons.
The whole Utaru tribe also feels so out of place. I mean a vegan tribe? Come on...
There is only one new character I liked - Kotallo.

Still, HFW provides an enjoyable experience. I've finished it at 85% completion in 77 hours. It was a bit disappointing how easy getting platinum is though. Worth a playthrough? I'd say yes. Definitely yes if you can borrow it from a friend or get it at a discount.

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
