This is a game I have been waiting an entire console generation for, and to be brief - I am disappointed.

The single player is lackluster, its missing core features like GT league or Cups/Championships. There aren't enough ways to engage with the single player, it's all rolling start races which takes all the fun out of racing. The multiplayer is embarrassingly bad, which has me worried

The multiplayer is embarrassingly bad, which has me worried for this games future.

The physics and customization are 10/10 though. This is where the game shines, the tracks & cars are pretty much perfectly modeled and the driving itself is quite punishing (in a good way). The game also does a great job on teaching you how to be a better driver.

Overall a massive letdown for a game that was advertised as being the ultimate gran turismo experience. Feels more like a glorified $30 game.

Now a week or so after release they patch the already grindy payouts to force you into purchasing credits with real world money (it even reminds you that you can EVERY time you get any credits added to your total) and mess the update up so much that the game has been offline for a while now so I can't even play it!

I hate to have to say this but please avoid this game in its current state, I would be looking to refund if I could and wait to pick it up at what it should have cost (MAX £20) when they have completely redone the game.

Edit - they have gone some way as to rectifying the issue but alot more needs to be done yet.

To add to this the recent update has reduced race payouts hugely with some going from £100,000 to £40,000 which adds to what was already a huge grind for the best cars in the game. This all comes after reviews have already been published which stinks from the developers. Gameplay is great and would have given it a 9, but a single player game is unavailable to play because the servers are offline for two days in a row. Also it is offline because they are including a patch to give less credits for race wins pushing you towards pay-to-play. A discrase for the franchise.

While there are lots of short missions and license tests, there's only a handful of Championships and actual races, so you can quickly run out of incentive to keep playing.

This is made worse by the poor payouts from races, which make the game more grindy than it needs to be. Rather than making you feel like you are working to earn more expensive cars and parts, it instead feels like it is pushing you hard to spend real money on microtransactions.

Coupled with just a few tracks, this game sorely lacks replayability for a game that costs €80

    DO NOT buy this game.

The game is beyond grindy for AAA game that costs 70$. For example there are legendary cars that cost around 18-19 mil credits. With how things are you have to keep grinding the same race over and over and over again for the next 25-30 hours or spend 200$ via MTX. If I wanted to grind THAT much i might as well played one of those F2P games and saved myself 70$.

    The bad:
    - Clunky as useless dialogue/conversations with NPC. In the early game some NPCs would give you helpful advices about cars & circuits. But as it gets into mid and late game most npc dialogues became literally rubbish ("I really like xxx car!" "I will be competing in this xxx! It's fast!" ... ya, as if I care).

    The Terrible:
    - Microtransactions. And the nerf to credit rewards.

Microtransactions for credits & cars would be a totally acceptable business model for f2p games, but absolutely NOT for a FULL PRICED game like GT7.

Credits are already hard to come by in game, and on top of that they slashed the credit rewards for the most efficient races. AND even on top of that they release a letter claiming they did it because they "don't want players to mechanically repeat races."

WTF? How does nerfing rewards solve the problem? If I had to mechanically repeat 100 races to get a certain car, after the nerf I have to repeat 200~1000 races to get the same car. Tell me how's that not mechanical now??

In the same letter they mentioned they want to tie in-game car prices to real world prices to reflect the cars' rarity -- that's another WTF.
Dude, most of us will NEVER get our hands on a Ferrari or Lamborghini or a legendary racing car, and that's exactly the reason we buy GT so we can have a taste of driving it in this "real driving simulator"!!
"Real world PRICE simulator" is NOT called for, it's not what ppl buy GT for.

    - The roulette tickets
The visual effect (roulette process) is an utter waste of precious gaming time, and the rewards are often ridiculously meh or USELESS (e.g. tuning parts for cars that you'll never buy).
I'd rather you just give us a fixed amount of credit and take away that RNG factor.

    TL;DR

    - A wonderful game, but ruined by a greedy & malicious business model / management. SIE / PD please stop implementing this disgusting, EA-like microtransactions-everything business model. It may make you money, but it destroys your reputation and gamers' trust in you.

Game also needs the return of race qualifying as constantly starting at the back of the pack (and why always rolling starts?) Isn't a good way to do a racing game. The removal of selling gift cars though as not surprising is a pretty terrible move forcing people to either grind extensively or pay real money for in game credits to purchase cars which wasn't a deal breaker for me as race rewards still weren't that bad but the recent update reducing all the race rewards is just embarrassing and needs to be called out. Polyphony needs to get back the the roots of the GT series and if they do need funding for future content it should be done in the way of paid DLC and not micro transactions. Expand

There's still a lot to improve the in-game economy, and even with the new changes, it's still far from perfect, but at least we're getting somewhere.

Some major underlying problems still exist, and need to be addressed, such as the ability to play the game offline (Kaz excuses this as a way to prevent hacking and cheating, but in reality, it's due to the game's FIA involvement for Sport Mode), and another thing that is equally as important is to make all the cars in the game a rental car in the Arcade Modes.

As stated in my previous review, when played normally under normal circumstances, you don't have any rental cars in the Arcade Modes (Arcade Races, Time Trials, Drift Trials, Custom Races and Two-Player Battle), and only 13 of which when played offline or in the two-player mode.

There are pros and cons to implementing every car in the game as rental cars in these modes (both for all the cars we have already and those added as DLC in future game updates), such as:

    Pros:
    1. It allows players to drive any car on any track that they want (once the tracks in question are unlocked by means of game progression) for casual fun, either in single player or two-player battles. It would also be a necessary option for players if they don't want to grind and just get in their favorite cars.
    2. It gives players the incentive to test drive a specific car before deciding on buying them from their respective dealerships in the game's career modes. This is even more important considering that two dealerships in the game, the Used and Legendary Car Dealerships, have a rotating line-up of cars that change their availability in real time, meaning it could take long for a car to show up there.
    3. Rental cars in the Arcade Modes don't go through performance degradation (such as the oil, engine and chassis rigidity).

    Cons:
    1. Remember that they are *rental* cars restricted to the Arcade Modes only, where you can borrow them for free. You cannot use them in the main campaign unless you buy, collect and earn them in your Garage.
    2. Because of them being rental cars, you cannot apply tuning parts, custom liveries and other such customization items. Only car-specific default colors, liveries and variations can be used from the color/livery selection, and that set-up tuning will only be based on the car's default setup, wherever possible. All tire compounds are freely available for use, however.
    3. As opposed to using cars from your Garage in the Arcade Modes, they should make it where you won't earn credits and Daily Workout progress driving a rental car, in order to keep things balanced.

That said, the Cafe is NOT a campaign, more of a side mission. For a game that literally took 2 console generations to complete (remember, GT6 was released on PS3), that's a huge blow.

This game felt really good in the beginning but the negatives ruin it for me.

Wow what a mistakes they made on this one. 1. The microtransactions is BS 2. Cant sell cars 3. The Music 4. Where are my best times per track in single player? 5. The roulette tickets: I never had any other price then the lowest 6. The payout per races I am thinking about returning it. To bad GT

    - Basic UI/UX designer has been probably on vacation during the whole development. I've never seen so much menu diving and so horrible user interface on any game. Why do I have to go through multiple screens every time if I want to tune my car or even buy tuning parts when tuning? Where are all the shortcuts?
    - Why in the heck is the replay always the default option and I had to do multiple presses instead of just going forward? And no, I really don't want to look at replay of those license training sessions where I just accelerate and brake
    - There is always too much screens and all other crap than just driving, you will spent as much time on the menu diving as driving the cars.
    - and of course the worst part: - forced online so they can disable the game from you when they want to and also force you to make micropayments if you want to use this as a normal game.

Avoid and wait for better games that actually concentrates on driving and not annoying users.

Now in GT7, they've made the MTX 10x more expensive, the in-game currency harder to earn, AND the game requires a connection to run, which means that they can shut down the servers in a few years, as Japanese game companies love to do, and you'll never be able to play it again, because they want you to buy GT8 and GT9 and so on, EA-Sports-style.

Oh, and of course, also in EA style, they disabled the MTX until AFTER the reviews went out. So you see something like 90% from the "journalists".

    No. Just, NO.

On top of that, it looks like the shaders were designed by someone who hasn't worked in graphics since PS3 days. Sure, the resolution and draw distance are great, but the cars all look like plastic, the foliage and grass don't look remotely real, and it all just looks... super fake.

It's really a tragedy that such an important series in gaming history has come to this.

Great, you have raytracing in Gran Turismo 7 but not in any actually playing / race mode. The actual surrounding around the track (the trees, the fencing, the stands, etc) all feel like a Fifa flipping shortcut flat with no uniqueness... it looks Sus if every rod in a fence is exactly the same. And don't get me wrong, this is a simulation... and it still doesn't simulate wall crashes or accidents and still win a race. How is this considered a "Great" Sim Racer at this point? It is just an average good game... but not any 10s worthiness as some reviewers say.

The mighty have fallen hard. People are suspiciously leaving higher marks now saying the payouts are higher. I have just reviewed this game, I started playing two weeks ago and have spent 150 hours in game to give you an idea of my experience. The money you make in game is so low it just makes you feel like you're moving in quick sand. Every aspect of the game, win money, difficulty, roulette tickets, invitations to buy cars, car parts and upgrades, all of it is based on pushing you to buy the currency, it's been a year, if Sony cared or this was a mistake it could've been fixed in five minutes. Now to do online race you need a good set-up, because set-up can give you over 3 second advantage (same car, different set-up). Café race are boring, the: you start last, overtake 10 slow cars in 2 laps was good in PS1, but now you have to do something new. However the worst thing is that they want you to pay real money to get in-game credit, online race gives you about 15'000Cr, and every online race last at least 15 minutes. License tests and missions give a laughable amount of credit too. A Gr.3 car costs 450'000Cr, the last week meta car for a daily race was 1'000'000Cr. On the top of that witch 1.07 they removed the only way to grind credit (1,6 million Cr in an hour if you are good).

Only good thing are missions and license, those are good.

Conclusion: GT7 is just a pay to get cars GT sport with some new cars and tracks. It could have been so much better

I was excited to play Gran Turismo 7 on a PS5, but I had to settle on for PS4 version. I actually grew very tired of waiting to find a PS5 at a reasonable price, so I decided to buy an XBOX Series X (and don't regret it). Once I got to experience the Horizon and Motorsport titles, I must say that I was highly impressed with them all. They are beautiful visually, audibly and gameplay is a blast. I can see now why so many people were always saying that Forza is better than GT. Gran Turismo 7 actually pales in comparison to even the older versions (on Xbox One). I’m not here to bash Sony, PD or GT7; I’m here to say do better. It’s going to take some work to win back this GT7 fan over again. I’ll still get a PS5 sometime in the future when it becomes more feasible to do so, but in the meantime, I’ll be waiting on Forza Motorsport 8 to drop. Expand

The difference between the GT Seven and the GT Sport is basically two: they added customization (which was great!) and reorganization of the game design.

    Only that!

Paying $70 for the same GT Sport is offensive!

I can't understand how franchises that have budget and less production time available, such as RIDE, Grid and Project Cars, can deliver SEVERAL AUTODROMOS from all over the world, but Gran Turismo doesn't. In fact, after Gran Turismo competitors began to appear, the Sony franchise was never able to keep up with the market competition, as it always had a small number of world racetracks. The most modern supercars, hypercars and racing cars have always been absent! The latest Gran Turismo games, like GT5, GT6 and GT Sport have always lost to competitors in the market in terms of supercars.

If Playstation Studios gave the same time and budget to the people at Milestone or Kunos Simulazioni, I'm sure they would deliver a RACING GAME content much more varied and fun than this game from Polyphony! And to make matters worse: Sony has the cynicism to charge real money in order to purchase cars that are impossible to acquire for normal in-game credits.

I played it in VR, really liked it, so purchased a 2nd hand racing rig/wheel which elevated it to a completely new level. NEVER have a enjoyed a real racing game like this. Progression seemed good at the start, unlocked a few of my fave cars ever early on ... then a few hours later I was persusing the Legends Garage and saw a beaut of a car ... with an eye-watering 20,000,000 credits price tag??!!! Hmm ... surely an oversight/typo/bug?? Ive noticed these 60 minute races for 1,000,000 credit prizes.... so i'd need to race 20hrs of these extended sessions to afford ONE car!!!??? I then innocently noticed the credits "top-up" option next to my total credits. Ah ... a convenient (and obviously affordable way) to purchase vehicles without grinding ..... HANG ON - SOMETHINGS SCREWY HERE!!! £15.99 FOR 2,000,000 CREDITS!!@@**???? So to buy that single 20,000,000 piece of CAR SOFTWARE "DLC" with real money would cost me £160 quid OR almost an entire day of racing non-stop for TWENTY HOURS!! I LOVED this game, I adored collecting all the cars, viewing all my dream cars in the VR showroom and it actually got me HOOKED on a racing sim for the first time in my life. Im now realising that this is nothing more than a sinister, cynical, anti-consumer, greedy, rip off .... tailored to perfection to get kids spending more money than the £70(!!!) the actual game costs in the first place!! The enjoyment I got from collecting the cars has dwindled as I realise I dont have the time or REAL money to acquire anywhere near the % of cars that would be satisfying.
AND THOSE SCAMMING PRE-DETERMINED ROULLETTE TICKETS!!! You should have 1/5th of a chance of getting the best prize every time. The game seems to have already decided to ALWAYS give you THE WORST PRIZE. You cant even press a button to tell it when to slow down which would make it fairer. Instead, the game forces you to watch on helplessly and hopelessly as you get repeatedly shafted! Just got a 6 STAR (no less) ROULLETTE TICKET tonight .... my prize ... a shaft (the irony) rod for a crappy Mazda I dont own with a value of (wait for it) .... 4,500 CREDITS!!! Thats a 6 STAR PRIZE!!!??? Somethings gone awry with this nonsense. I will keep playing as I do enjoy the racing, which is probably BEST IN CLASS, even though I know the rewards will be scant and i'll never get the enjoyment I should have got from it. Ive given it 3 star and that seems very high and overly generous compared to the 2.2 average score. Never have I felt so elated AND disappointed by a game before. Shame on the greedy, cynical fat cats who designed this cash grab of a business model. Hope you choke on it!!!

But you can spend $40 on top of the $80 you paid for the game for that one car. The game is just going to push the next on you anyways. For a game that tries to put forward a philosophy of “pure racing” and the joy of motor sports and automotive admiration, it sure does love to hide it behind paywalls and gacha lottery tactics. It’s a shame, because the gameplay is enjoyable, but all the trappings around it are soul-sucking. It feels so repetitive and boring because the track designs and the mechanics (playing with a controller) are one of the worst I have ever experienced in racing games. The game is unbalanced in almost every way where microtransactions are not micro but megatransactions. Alot of cars are unobtainable or you have to play 1000 hours and imo this game is not even worth 25 hours of playing. The multiplayer lacks content, is very bad designed and is very boring. Sony should be ashamed that this is an exclusive. Being an exclusive is also the only thing that is unique about this game. I would save your money and skip this one or pick it up when it is like 15 bucks, because imo it is not worth more. I am very very disappointed. Expand

When GT Sport is a better single player game than Gran Turismo 7, you know something is seriously wrong.

The game is linear and short, barely has anything of the GT flair.
The credits income is nerfed, car sales are disabled, designed to encourage micro transactions, or excessive grinding.

After waiting 8 years for this game I feel utterly betrayed by Polyphony.

The driving is amazing. The force feedback is faultless. The game however ? Rolling starts and fight your way from the back arcade style goes against everything else in the game. There is lack of any real campaign after you complete what feels like a long tutorial , that’s it … now grind buying all the cars, which by the way after nerfing payouts forces you towards microtransactions.

    - the ticket roulette is basically a piss take. You get shown some cool stuff like cars and parts. But almost all the time you only get cash, and then only the lowest possible amount (5000 credits)
    - game tries to force you to buy credits with real money with tactics like FOMO (some tickets will grant you the ability to buy a very expensive car for a short amount of time)

    And also, GT7 looks like it's a 95% copy/clone of GT Sport.

It almost seems like Poliphony and Sony are trying to steal money from their loyal fanbase and try to milk their cows until they are empty.

With all the flaws and misconceptions currently in the game, I give a 3 of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When released, Gran Turismo redefined car racing games, it's team were known for their cutting edge programming and graphics. Games like Forza would not be here if not for GT. To me, if feels like recent entries in the series have become lifeless, regurgitating the same features but with a new coat of paint. There is no vision, ambition or innovation any more. Even the once legendary lighting feels lacklustre, instead of it leaving the completion in it's wake. I can think of many features that would really put this game back on track again. Kazanori once said that he does look at his competitors games but he really should. Has Kaz just got bored of making games or has Japan really fallen so far with game development since the golden ear? Add to that the micro transaction where you can buy real cars cheaper than the in game ones and useless offline play leaving players stranded, unable to play for days at a time. I can't even get my money back but I can promise never to buy another game from this studio, despite being there from the very start.. sad Expand

Gran Turismo 7 is a love letter to motorsport history and an impeccable technical showcase. The franchise's traditional formula gets good improvements, but it's still extremely true to its roots. One of the best racing series ever shines spectacularly on the PS5.
