As a long time GT fan, it beyond pains me to see the current state of this beloved franchise. The scariest part is that the fiasco is not caused by incompetency by Sony or PD. It is a cold and calculated operation to deceive and manipulate the playerbase to maximise profit at all costs. They knew what they are doing. Did they anticipate the backlash? Most definitely. Did they care? Most definitely not. They did their math and knew the minority of whales would more than cover the damage done by alienating their loyal fanbase of 25 years.

The whole game has been designed from ground up to maximise MTX. Elements to promote MTX has been weaved into almost every aspect to the game. From obvious ones like the inability to sell cars and FOMO, to the subtle ones like the background of the credit earning screen made to resemble a top-up card.

After the community made their voice heard, PD and Kaz effectively doubled down on their appoach while offering nothing but empty and vague promises. The appearance of the McLaren F1 (a fan favourite) for 18.5m following by the Porsche 917K at 18m following the backlash is almost hilarious.

Given how Sony and PD have reacted, there is unfortunately little optimism that they will backtrack from their "ostrich head in the sand" approach. A shame really, how this once legendary franchise will end.

Had the potential to be a 9.5 game, but I cannot give more than a 0 for the disgusting way Sony and PD had deceived and betrayed their loyal fanbase.

I'm not going into the recent error with the update or the microtransaction situation, although Polyphony is getting greedy. There was always something I fancied taking for a spin.Oh and don't forget shuffle racing! This was removed from number 6 and was a tell tale sign that Polyphony no longer cared about the fans, about what made rooms fun. From then on its been lacking in content and focused on FIA integration which about 0.00001% of us give a t*ss about. Such a shame. No more city circuits except for the rather boring Tokyo route, still so many classics missing too. The campaign mode is boring compared to older titles. You have to go to cafe, get new thing to do, go back to cafe, rinse and repeat. Pathetic. They've giving it a nice coat of lacquer and it does look good, not amazing, only the cars really look just about next gen, but overall it's good. Problem is, it runs horribly sometimes and races can be consistently stuttering throughout, others every now and then, ruining any immersion. When GT 5 couldn't hold 60 it had screen tearing, which I'd take over stutters any day. If number 5 was still online, I'd most definitely still be playing that. Have fun shuffle racing with a great community and then kit up some everyday cars and have a laugh. It's all gone and what's left is the empty shell of what once was great. This feels like less than half a game when compared to the PS1/2 and 3 era. More than disappointing, to any real GT fan, it's a disgrace. Expand

The game is brilliant, albeit a bit short (Cafe is over in under 30, even 25 hours easily). Graphics, sounds, music, physics, controls, all are excellent or at least, very good. That's it for the positives.

    - Always online even for the single-player is unwanted, unwarranted and plain frustrating. You can't play the game if the servers are down, and what happens at end-of-life ? You're left with a useless box. I get the "online" thing when it comes to multiplayer, online races etc, but this strategy is meaningless for single-player and it became painfully obvious just days after release.
    - Grinding is a part of GT, always was, BUT it had some purpose and clear net "profits" until GTS. After 1.07/1.08 update especially, it's just plain useless, I can't grind for 330 races and 20 hours !!!! to buy a SINGLE legendary car
    - Microtransactions (Sony and PD playing it loose with "micro") should NOT EVEN EXIST in a full-priced AAA game. I won't even go into the whole "store was hidden from reviewers in order to get favorable reviews", which is plain straight scam.
    - To add insult to injury, Kaz said that "he wished players could enjoy the full game even, EVEN, EVEN without microtransactions". THAT'S WHY WE BOUGHT IT AT FULL PRICE!!!
    - I won't go into the pricing of the cars and the microtransactions (MICRO !!!! at 20euros), because they are highway robbery at best, because again, they shouldn't EVEN EXIST in a full-priced AAA game.

Anyway, since I finished Cafe, Licences and Missions, since I don't have the time, nor want to grind and I obviously won't pay a single euro in their microtransactions, there is nothing else to do in this game, so I'm putting it away and waiting to see how Sony and PD update GT7 in the future

The poor payouts for single player events and the exorbitant cost of cars within the game shows that they nerfed the payouts to herd players towards buying in-game currency with real money. I can almost get behind the idea that they wanted to make the really expensive cars to feel special and hard to obtain but the introduction of micro-transactions point to a cynical cash-grab.

Also, all single player races are essentially start 40+ seconds behind the leader and try to catch up. No qualifying to determine your starting grid position. This points to severely lacking AI in single player mode where all they could do to make it competitive was to make the player start 40+ seconds behind the AI.

All in all, an absolute **** for a classic playstation exclusive. I've never left a Metacrictic review before but I just had to find somewhere to shout about how disappointing this whole fiasco is. I've been playing Gran Turismo since the PS1 days. It has had it's little moments of controversy before, but this situation is just indicative of the whole modern gaming landscape. Let's charge people a premium price for a product and then nickel and dime them for every cent they have just to enjoy the game.

Unfortunately I've already bought the game so they probably couldn't care less about this opinion. All I can do is leave this comment to warn other people, and not play the game until something changes.

Poor show Sony/Polyphony Digital. The user review backlash is throughly deserved.

I have updated my score as of the 21 April. Polyphony have made some great changes to address some of the issues in my previous review. The score will not change until they address the always online section of the game.

Old Review: First of all, i like this Game, i like how it plays and how it looks but considering the shady and senseless practices Sony has done with this Game i have to give it a 2/10 right here. The BIGGEST issue that me and everyone has with the Game are the MACRO-transactions and how they were implemented after launch just for the game to do good in Reviews which is something that's truly illegal and was never done before as far as i know and then reducing the Winning Prices for the Hard Level Races in 1.07 which was something completely stupid since now the easier level races now have bigger winning prices than these events, this is all done with the purpose of making people buy their stupid "Micro"transactions which are probably WAY BIGGER than any other Game that haves them and they even duplicate the Game's full price, yeah, we still have other methods to Grind Credits but if someone doesn't do anything about it, they will make the In-Game Economy even worse than it is right now, someone has to go and sue Sony for making these greedy and shameful practices because like i said earlier, they're not legal at all. To be honest, it's really sad that a Game like Gran Turismo 7 that was made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Franchise and with a huge potential is getting ruined by terrible decisions like this.

The UI is horrendous for a current game with a lot of clicking to move around. The avatars that interact with you look like stolen clip art and very unoriginal. They have never ending dialogue and the cafe owner wants to lecture you on cars every time you try to get new races.

The music is also a mix bag of annoyance, Final Fantasy and 32-bit golf. Why did they feel the need to remix classical music as digitized jazz? It will then flip to a modern song which is jarring. Forza at least offer channels so you can decide what genre to listen to.

The game has also become a live service with all of the trappings of loot, real money for in-game currency and prize wheels. Why do I have to sit through a long, drawn out animation, to see what prize I get.

Both Sony and Polyphony should be ashamed of this game and where it has gone. They took a series that was 100% about cars and racing and made it 10% of a bunch of modern garbage. Spent all the money on ways to make more money and not on the heart of the game.

There are time-limited cars where you are only presented with the opportunity to buy at specific points in the game. If you don't have the in-game credits necessary at this moment (which you likely will not), well that's just too bad. . You don't earn nearly enough credits from online and off-line events alike to be able to buy and modify the cars you want, and as of the latest 1.07 update these credit payouts have been reduced substantially. The meta of grinding a certain single player event hundreds of times to be able to afford some expensive in-game purchases develops with an economy like this, which is just mind-numbingly repetitive and boring. The developers may try and defend this game design by saying that the most expensive vehicles *should* take a long time to save up for. But in reality if you're an adult that works a full time job in real life and you can allocate some limited time on your weekends to playing online/singleplayer and accumulating say oh I don't know - 300,000 credits per weekend? ... you're looking at needing to play this game for years and years, decades even to be able to buy all the vehicles in the game. And that's without the price of modifying them considered! You'd probably have to play the game for the rest of your life if you wanted to modify them all too, lol. You cannot sell cars to gain extra credits like previous GT games, and the in-game spinning-wheel prize feature basically always gives you the worst prize out of all shown, bit of a slap in the face. With all that said, why would they design it this way? Oh of course - there's that sneaky little feature of microtransactions; being able to spend real money to get more in-game credits. And that's the direction they're pushing us. Out of principal I won't be spending any money on microtransactions. You should not have to after what you've paid for the game itself. I'll put the game down and move on to some other enjoyable activity to spend my free time on before it comes to that.

And in addition to the above, the game requires a constant internet connection to even play single player mode. When extended server/update issues happen like they have done today, that removes everyone's ability to play the game they've bought offline.

The strong vehicle physics, dynamic weather and time conditions (hopefully they come to all circuits in the game) has the potential to make for some amazing online racing, with tyre, fuel strategies coming into play.

If they fix up the in-game economy of this game it will go from a 5/10 to a 9/10 in my eyes.

    The bad:
The 3rd person racing view makes the cars look very bad, they lack details, reflections and textures. Requires permanent online connection to play the campaign and “off-line” championships such as GT Sport. Non-existent collision engine (after crashing fully, the control of the car remains the same). If there is a disconnection in the middle of a championship, you lose the progress of the races and when the connection returns you will have to start from the beginning of the event, you return to the starting grid (pun intended). The sound section is rare, taken from pre-made sound libraries, like those comic TV series, only the recorded laughs were missing. It is not possible to start a championship and let the days go by. Anachronistic, boring, absurd and redundant menus. Day 0 already has extra payments and DLCs in the store to buy cars if you don't want to be stuck in the first races always. Cars that in GT Sport cost 4 USD here cost 40 USD. Ray tracing only in photo mode (it doesn't have it in the race). Decent car modeling on a poorly lit gray background to make a visual trick and highlight the car modeling (very cheap programming trick). The coffee mode is boring, there are no “text only” character voices, so let's read

    Lo Meh!:
Accept it once and for all, Gran Turismo stayed in the 2000s and no longer knew how to advance, the last "Great" Gran Turismo was 3, after that neither the press nor the fans accept that the saga is well dead. This game looks more like a Gran Turismo Sport re-skin. Unless you have a lot of friends in garages and you want to dazzle them (or sell them) with those car posters that stick next to a model in a bathing suit, that's just what this game will do. I don't care if they say it's a "Prologue" edition and then they release a VSpec or ASpec version, I don't believe them anymore so save it.

Camera angle is crap and the AI are horrible. Throw in Microtransactions and you've got GT7. Rolling races over and over at the back of the pack. Slow grind with the intent to make the player purchase microtransactions. Never again. Just stick with Forza as it's much superior as a simcade.

Great looking game and great racing mechanics. However the always online for single player is a big issue...especially when it made the game I paid 80e unplayable. There is also unfortunately a grind for credits and an over pricingof cars. Very poor damage mechanics really make this a poor all round package. Particularly disappointing when you know polyphony can do better!

The core racing feels excellent. The graphics are good, but I wouldn't say great. The cafe menu campaign is actually really well done and a great way to help non-hardcore players into the game(like myself). Overall I had a lot of fun with the game and there is a lot to like.

However, two major issues bring the score way down. Always online, I actually wasn't worried about this as I always have internet. However, a basic patch ended up bringing the game offline for over a day. This is not an mmo, the always online is mainly to save your progress. And the bigger issue, the cost of vehicles vs the amount you earn. It was already at a point where you would probably only experience 15% of the vehicles without grinding. Then with the latest patch they greatly reduced the earnings of many races that we could previously grind. Now it is nigh on impossible to unlock anymore high end vehicles unless you pay for DLC.

If you go in knowing you only will have access to about 15% of the car lineup after completing most of the SP content, then go for it, still a good game. However, if this is not okay(and you don't like always online), vote with your wallet.

If you're not online, you just can't do anything with this game as it will be stuck on a loading screen.
There's more, as if your Internet connection isn't stable enough, like if it sometimes disconnect for a minute or so, and you are in a race, then the race is stopped and you lose everything you did since then because 'it can't save your progression' (is there no space to store save data in this console I bought 500€ ?). Like you're in a 20 laps race, last lap, Internet fails for a second, race stops and you have to do your 20 laps all over again — hoping that internet will not fail this time.
That's absolutely outrageous that you can't play a 100€ solo game without being connected to these non-working servers or if you have a quite cheap wifi. I hope they will fix that, if not I won't be able to trust PlayStation studios anymore.

They had so many years to develop GT7, there was so much anticipation for it and yet, the actual content of the game was a complete let down. Yes, DLCs will be released but that hardly justifies anything and it's hardly something to be hopeful for if the DLCs just end up being more tracks and cars from GT6. GT Sport DLC's were mainly just common cars that should have been in the game from launch. There is hardly anything distinct from GT Sport's selection right now. GT2 and GT4 provided details and a vast choice of cars and tracks. The used car dealership in GT7 is a flop, like 15-30 cars in there at best. We let polyphony slide with GT Sport since they innovated and implemented the penalty system which was new to the franchise and a new direction. GT6 had standard cars which were cars that we're ported from GT4 but still rendered as PS2 graphics, which was a complete joke. GT7 was suppose to hit the nail on the head.

The execution and presentation is gorgeous. The details are so ultra real and beautiful, it is a true therapeutic experience you will not get in any other game. It's cannot be overlooked, it is truly a graphical marvel. The menus and design as good as the latest Apple product trailers. I will forever respect and admire the minds behind the creation of Gran turismo games, but consumer enthusiasts of the franchise are getting sick and know it's always something with them. And what the heck is that BS "music" mode? Forza Horizon 4-5 have an excellent selection. So good that Gran Turismo most likely can't ever match at this point. I am honestly looking forward to Forza Motorsports 8 as well. I presume they will actually use the time wisely and develop something nice.

After many years, we have a new version of the Gran Turismo series. The title marked with the number 7 turns out to be a game with two faces.

The positive one is the driving model, changing weather conditions and the changing time of the day. You can feel the differences in driving between individual car models and the influence of the installed parts on the driving characteristics even more than in older GT games. This is the basis for making Gran Turismo 7 a very good game in the future.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game makes it mediocre. One can get the impression that Polyphony Digital designers stopped with knowledge about User and Customer Experience in the 90s.

Badly designed game screens. For example, after a race in the Cafe menu, you have to click OK more than 10 times to exit. If you also get a car and gain a level, the number of clicks reaches about 15. Who designs games like that?

Players cannot enjoy split-screen mode until the completion of specific single player challenges. It is no different with the online mode. What's more, when setting up a room in online mode, we can only choose the tracks that have been unlocked in single player. Do you seriously want to decide for the players how to have fun? It is as if LEGO forbid building own sets from bricks and restrict customer to building only the one from the manual. This is ridiculous.

Back to online. Qualifications removed, room settings cannot be saved, existing room settings cannot be edited, grid cannot be edited. The game has been devoid of basic functions that allow players to have fun with theirs friends. Instead of progress, we have regress. GT7 is unplayable in this aspect. Anyone who plays Gran Turismo with friends will stay with the Sport edition.

The lack of new tracks, well-known single player challenges from previous games, and few new cars make the GT7 feel more like a remaster of previous parts than some new and special game. A small number of changes can be understood in a series that is released every year like FIFA, NBA, etc. But not in Gran Turismo that is released every few years.

The characters added to the game are uninteresting, their presentation is more like a browser game than AAA (avatar and written text). Their statements are as boring as if they had been prepared by some poor text generator. It’s better to read Wikipedia.

Back to UX / CX again. Changing screens activate playback of a new song, so it’s impossible to listen to entire song. It sounds more like jingles. Car descriptions cannot be scrolled using the steering wheel. The Thrustmaster T500 steering wheel works with the PS4 version of the game, but not with the PS5 version. HUD is not customizable. Videos (as boring as those generic texts) cannot be skipped. I could go on and on like that.

Generally, Polyphony Digital does not learn anything, GT games are painfully repetitive, good solutions from competing games do not go to GT. In fact, even good solutions from the series disappear (online lobby settings).

Considering what I wrote at the beginning, there is hope that GT7 will become a better game. I hope as soon as possible, before GT7 disappears forever from the disks of our consoles.

We need SPEC 2.0 ASAP that will especially fix online lobbies.

    Pros:
    + driving model
    + weather conditions
+ change of time of day

    Cons:
    - unplayable online mode
    - no new track
    - challenges pasted from earlier games
    - no significant changes
    - terrible User and Customer Experience

Some customizations such as engine swaps, are locked behind an rng gift/reward system with very dismal odds. Overall, with the pacing of the initial release and the patches, I would recommend to buy this game when it is at least 30% off. The racing is fun, but the economy, rng issues, and the abnormally long campaign/license system that keeps some things locked from you for a pretty long time- makes this a “wait-worthy” purchase.

Microtransactions are fine as long as you dont tailor your $70 game around them…but they did this time. Every single car has seen a price increase (an s2000 is $100k) and payouts from races are TINY compared to previous games. The game is completely unfinished, half of the licenses arent even used in the “campaign”. There isnt a real campaign. Theres a stupid cafe system where you can finish in 3 days and thats with only a few hours played a day. PD is actively patching races with large payouts so players dont get money too fast. The number of courses is miniscule and dont include many courses featured in trailers. The physics for some rwd are completely wrong (ie 350z has snap oversteer like an s2000 with bad tires. These are both cars ive owned and tracked irl). There are many glitches, crashes and flat out errors that are getting worse with every patch (for the past week, tires on dozens of mission races and licenses have been bugged making the missions/licenses near impossible. TLDR: absolute mess of a game. An embarrassment for a 25th anniversary. Wait and I mean WAIT long to buy it, perhaps a year or more. Completely unlike the PD of old, but anyone with a brain could have seen this coming after the launch of GT 5 and GT sport. Those were just tests to see how little content they could getaways with and how gullible the fanbase was.

The game is extremely grindy and dangles pay to win solutions in front of you at any chance it gets. It’s non sense that the micro transactions were hidden from reviewers and the fact that most of the present critic reviews don’t reflect the experience users are currently playing is unfortunate and deceptive. -Anyone looking to buy the game should first visit r/granturismo in reddit and read the reviews

-Very limited content even in terms of cars available, most older than 10 years old and you have to wait for them to show up in a used car dealer which only refreshes once in a long while...

With predatory microtransactions, lots of bugs, online options removed from the previous game and no way to play the full single player experience without an internet connection, it's not worth giving Polyphony your money right now. If they listen to their fan base and fix this games problems it could be an excellent game but for now it's just another rushed-to-release Triple A failure from a company that doesn't seem to understand the community. It's nothing short of heartbreaking for a long time Gran Turismo fan like myself.

EDIT: They have, for the most part, solved my main issue with the game since I originally posted this review with the 1.11 update. The in-game economy is much improved since launch. It is now much less time consuming to grind for in-game credits and the game is much better for it though it still needs work. My rating of this game has gone from a 2 to a 5.

I get free 2 play vibes from the economy in this game( You can’t even sell cars). Only difference is that you have to pay full price first. Then we have the lack of communication during these server maintenance windows that never seem to end. The ongoing maintenance while writing this review was supposed to last 6 hours. Instead it’s been 24 hours and not a peep from Polyphony. The game went from a solid 8.5-9 to a 0 for me. I can’t play this disgusting piece of sh*t. And that’s not just because it’s impossible to even start during the maintenance. But also because the complete and utter disrespect to the fan base. Congratulations Polyphony Digital. The first time I started the game, everything was there in the right place: memories of the old GT, fun, effort, all with technical improvements and fantastic graphics.
Day after day things were starting to get worse, there was no way to play offline, split screen with a few preselected cars, 2nd driver in split screen couldn't reach the same speed as 1st driver with the same car.
Dream cars have unreachable prices, but they were fine because I don't care to collect them all in the first 2 weeks, but now you have managed to let it be more difficult than ever with this latest update, forcing us to pay to win.
I understand that the "real driving simulator" must simulate the fact that only the rich can afford to race in real cars, but we have bought your games so far to have the chance to dream even without money in our pocket, now you have ruined it , thanks Polyphony Digital.

Ask me a week ago, and I probably would have rated it a 7, but in that time, the developer has completely tarnished the Gran Turismo name. I already paid $70 to be able to drive cars that I can’t afford in real life, but now it will take me months just to be able to afford them in this game. The push for microtransactions is absolutely sickening. As esports become more popular, this pay to play mentality is disgusting and will price out hopes and dreams of youth who may have tremendous talent. I have an idea for the developer - instead of trying to pull more money out of your players, how about developing multiplayer games that completely level the playing field - that really make you think and strategize like a racing team would? And while you are working on that, make it easier to earn credits so the microtransaction crap isn’t necessary. I know, that will probably take years to develop, seeing how long it took to release GT7 - a game that feels like it could have been released 5 years ago based on the lack of content.
