Attempts too much and delivers far too little. A lot of the story seems unnecessary or unoriginal (like Brok dying; it was like an Assassin's Creed game all of a sudden, where death is the only thing that inspires vengeance in the player), and important moments are solved off-screen in five minutes (like the unification of Alfheim or the recruitment of Hel's army). Nowhere near enough character development to justify Sif suddenly being a good guy on her fifth line of dialogue in the game right at the very end. Plot armour is apparent and obvious and is not cleverly hidden from view like you'd expect.

Core gameplay is fine, but lacks the excitement of being novel. The focused triumph of GOW 2018 has been replaced by a rushed game that should have been chopped in two to allow greater exploration of themes and characters. Seminal moments are reduced to backdrops and 'What was the point of that' moments. Large pieces of the game can be removed and nothing changes from the game's resolution. Garm/Fenrir and the creation of the Jormungandr can be removed from the game and nothing about Ragnarok changes.

Rather than wax lyrical about all the game's contradictions I will simply say; what a disappointment. It fails to deliver and is a sprawling mess that can't decide what it wants to be and what it wants to be about.

magine buying a $200 plastic hammer in the hype and getting it for this. Oof.

God Of War Ragnarok has been called a "masterpiece" by practically every reviewer on the planet but sadly it far from being a masterpiece. The biggest issue that this game feels no different to the first game, they've added a few rather pointless elements to the combat and skills which ultimately just make things feel cluttered and confusing. Other than those minor changes it's the same very linear gameplay, where you're funneled down very specific paths with little to no room to explore your surroundings, along with the same old rather tedious puzzle elements and the very tired video game trope of smashing f*cking pots! Then there's the cross gen thing...the amount of very slow crawling under, over, through behind practically everything in your path gets old VERY quickly! it's quite clear after just 20 minutes that this game should have been PS5 only. Basically this game is a huge disappointment as far as i'm concerned...oh and atreus..is really f*cking irritating. Expand

Also, I feel like they added far too many puzzles. They arent overly hard but it interrupts the flow of the game to a point where its tedious and annoying. Some of the new elements to the puzzles are just bad.

Level design is annoying also. I am constantly getting turned around and leaves me with a feeling of missing things. I realize that the game wants you to come back to these areas but still..

The first game was amazing and I couldnt wait to play it again. I am 15-20 hours into this one and at this point, I just cant wait for it to be over.

Does what it does correctly, but the hand holding is inexcusable. Devs need to stop catering to the lowest common denominator and realize that most people can actually grasp very basic logic in puzzle solving. Prompting the player literally seconds after a small challenge presents itself is baffingly bad.

God of war Ragnarok is a true master piece of a game, picking up right where 2018 left of and adding more depth and life to all the characters into the game. in this game they addressed critical issues in from the 2018 from enemy variety to the process of kicking down chains. The game has quite a few puzzles throughout the story though not very challenging they add a nice break between the exciting combat moments so you don't get worn down. The combat in the game was much better than the 2018 game adding more moves and abilities to characters and even a new weapon. The story writers and developers did an amazing job adding shocking moments to the game and evolving the experience by making Atreus a playable character. The ending of this game was very touching and emotional and I just hope the find a way to bring Atreus back to the future games. Expand

The setpieces are nice to look at but as soon as you try to explore this game you´ll be confronted with invsible walls everywhere because the creators don´t like you snooping around before they showed you the mandatory segment.

The dialouge is a catastrophe, it´s like a superhero movie, with modern language in a ancient and mythical setting, they couldnt make it sound out of place more than they did, an total atmosphere killer.

Difficulty settings only define the healthpools and attackdmg of the enemies, you can clearly see that the developers not really had any intentions to make the gameplay deep and worthwhile. Balancing? What for, you can kill bosses in the easiest difficulty with a few hits, while the highest gives you damagesponge enemies. The encounters per se are still the same as the were in the 2018 version of this game.

It rather feels like a DLC than a new chapter.

The game starts immediately after the end of its prequel, so in terms of narrative and storytelling it requires to have beaten (at least) the main game, although its highly recommendable to have been through the side content as well.
In terms of gameplay, the game feels more agile and intuitive than its prequel, especially in specific features as climbing. The combat mechanics are deeper, more polished and have more variety as well. Moreover, the number of environments and scenarios you can get immersed into is greater, and visiting the different Realms is an audiovisual marvel, as the technical quality of the game is beyond question, as well as its performance, which has been pretty solid during my whole gameplay (at least playing the PS5 Favour Performance graphic mode, which was my choice to enjoy the game). However, the fact that the game was originally developed for the PS4 is evidenced in some hidden in-game loading screens (in form of corridors, fissures and other spaces).
Regarding the length of the game, it can take from 20 to 25 hours to beat in the normal (Give me balance) difficulty, which is a really satisfactory duration. Furthermore, God of War: Ragnarok contains some of the best side missions ever designed, many of them focusing on the story of the secondary characters.

Their relationship in this game feels like the well-deserved pay off we get after all they went through in the last game. I could follow Dad and Boi's story for countless more games!

Far too many elements like puzzles and loot are constantly repeated. Normally I try to explore everything in such games. But here I can't explore everything in the first playthrough because I'm missing items for certain puzzles. Only when I have them can I come back. But don't worry. In the course of the story, you pass by everywhere

In the course of the story, you pass by everywhere 3 times anyway. This means that you have to pass the same places very often.... Phew.

The battle system is also overloaded. They should have done it in Dark Souls or Elden Ring. I didn't use all the options because I always played my way anyway. Besides, everything doesn't seem as precise as in Elden Ring. You always have the feeling that you lack control.

I really expected much more at the end of a mythology as great as the Norse.
Another point is that they recycled everything from Athena and Zeus (2018)
the whole game feels like filler trying to make it long.
Kratos being good and not wanting to kill anyone seems silly and boring to me.

The way they intertwine their creativity towards norse mythology by curating and writing the stories in unique ways that fit the purpose of the narrative while still representing the original norse scriptures correctly was done in a very thoughtful manner and was an epic experience. Santa Monica have really exhausted their skills into crafting this masterpiece and their passion and hardwork is seen through and through this game. Would definitely recommend this title to anyone who hasn't grabbed it on the PS5 yet as it is 100% a must have running silky smooth on the system or to anyone that enjoyed the 2018 game as this is basically that but dialled up to 1000. This is definitely GOTY for me hands down. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I did enjoy some parts of the game, I had the most dissatisfaction with the story and characters. Let me list some pros and cons

    Pros:
    - Satisfying combat, more enemy variety, verticality
    - Beautiful art direction
    - Barely any bugs, smooth gameplay

    Cons:
    - Story: Based on the trailers, I had the bare minimum expectation of an epic story. The story, however, was very bland and unambitious. Jormungander did not play any significant role. There was no time travel. Everything in the story went against what we saw in the murals from the last game. It felt like the theme of "denying fate" was an excuse to not include events depicted in 2018's murals. No (real) Tyr leading us into Asgard, no giants raiding Asgard, etc. Did we even get to see who blew the horn from 2018's game? I hated playing Atreus as well. The segment in Ironwood was so boring and dragged out.

    - Characters: I felt the characters were rushed. Characters like Angrboda and Thrud were easily forgettable and annoying. I did not have any problems with Atreus in the previous game, but in this game, man is he one annoying **** He's the typical angsty teenager depicted in early 2000's shows. Makes me feel like I'm playing Abby the ogre from the Last of Us 2. In this game, one of the themes was trust between a father and son, but Kratos did not reveal much about his past to Kratos, but instead to Freya and Mimir. Like what? I wanted to hear Kratos talk about his pale skin, red tattoos, what he did in Greece, etc. to Atreus! NOT FREYA AND MIMIR. And boy was Thor a total letdown. He did not provide the level of excitement that was presented from Baldur. Only 2 fights with Thor that wasn't as grand as the ones with Baldur. They tried to make us sympathize with Thor and his family issues but I just couldn't. I'm playing GOD OF WAR, not GOD OF SYMPATHY. All in all, this game lacked the epicness and ambition from previous titles, it was not exciting to play.

    - Boss fights: The boss fight with Thor in the beginning and the fight with Heimdall were somewhat satisfying, but the others were bland. The fights with Niohogg and Garm were so lame. I guess it's just me hoping for boss fights like in God of War 2 and 3, but seriously, fighting in a flat arena and hitting the bosses when they are vulnerable for a couple of seconds gets so repetitive and boring.

    - Asgard: What a total letdown. I was hoping to see the pinnacle of Norse architecture after climbing the wall but all I see is a small wooden village.

All in all, the game felt rushed. I heard that they were originally thinking of making the Norse saga into a trilogy, but instead compressed it into 2 games which may explain the lack of content that I was hoping for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a solid game. It does everything it needs to and nothing more. The faults this game has are with its’ hand holding nature and linear pathing. Outside of combat the game nearly plays itself. Atreus, Freya and Mimir answer all the game’s puzzles before you even have a chance to solve them yourself. There’s too many QTE (quick time event) situations that are needless. I understand the original trilogy of games had them but it’s an old trope. These would just be better served as a cutscene. The Game is on rails outside of combat, almost literally. As you go on these Disney Land-esque train and boat rides to hide the loading screens. Thankfully the game does provide plenty of lore and backstory to make the trek more bearable. The combat is fantastic and almost feels like a fighting game with extensive combos and a variety of awesome moves to choose from. The enemy variety has improved since the last entry. Plenty of different enemy types and epic bosses to slay. I just wish the in between battle stuff was more engaging. God of War Ragnarök feels like a walking simulator at times. Many PlayStation games as of late follow this trend. However the sound design is awesome! The voice acting and music are top tier. The animations are both good and bad at times. Sometimes you’ll sit in a boat with your son Atreus and he’s stiff as a board. Other times he’s galavanting around with smooth motions. I will say the graphics are phenomenal as well. God of War Ragnarok tells a heart warming and engaging story with glorious combat. But everything outside of that is a slow, tedious, and relatively thoughtless trudge of pressing random buttons to activate switches, mechanisms, and doors. The puzzles are so simplistic they might as well not be there at all. Especially because Atreus and Mimir act as kratos’s brain throughout the game.

The second half of the game (after 15 hours of play and climbing a massive wall) improves the overall experience. The battles get bigger and better, the story takes a few unexpected turns and the combat improves after receiving an awesome new weapon. Highly recommended getting through the messy first half because the game excels in the second!

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
