Mighty No. 9 isn’t perfect, but it is something that anyone who grew up loving any kind of Mega Man game should check out.

It's not perfect by any means, and the overall quality is not on par with the core Megaman franchise, but still the new work from Inafune-san mixes action, platforming and difficulty spikes in a balanced way, enough to win a recommendation.

I had forgotten how fantastic it can feel to play a good Mega Man game. Mighty No. 9, with its wonderful boss fights and amazing combo system, is a good Mega Man game.

Mighty No.9 is a great old school action platformer. Although it doesn't reinvent anything new, it shows a remarkable game, although weakened by some ingenuity, especially technical.

Mighty No. 9 will not conquer the hearts of new generations of gamers, because of the poor graphics and because it is really old school, difficult, demanding. It really recaptures the spirit of old Mega Man games, although we can see that some ingenuity of old times is lost, especially in the not always perfect level design. Old schoolers will definitely enjoy, except for the graphics.

Mighty No. 9 suffers mainly from one problem: An identity crisis. Technical difficulties aside Mighty just can’t manage to step out of MegaMan’s shadow. It feels more like a solid homage than a serious contender.

The big problem with Mighty No. 9 was being overrated by consumers and even by its creator. The game fulfills its objectives halfway because, despite its very bad presentation and technical problems, it is faithful to the promise to give us a challenging and fun challenge that will be loved by old school gamers.

Even though it's enjoyable, there's nothing particularly relevant or outstanding in Mighty No. 9. We've had fun with it, but it's technically poor and its level design is quite uninspired –definitely not what you would expect from such a successful Kickstarter and Inafune.

Mighty No. 9 is an extremely niche product. The efforts of the developers do not reflect the millionaire crowdfunding campaign that gave birth to the game, but the final result is still more than decent and can be really fun for those who love this videogame genre.

After all the hype, controversy, and delays, the end results are satisfying. Some may be turned off by the shortness of the standard game, others may be turned off by the toughness of some of the bosses, but there are plenty of nostalgic and challenge-seeking players that will get a kick out of Mighty No. 9. There’s a hope in me that there’ll be a sequel, one that really pushes the formula forward, but for now, this is just another Mega Man game – make of that what you will.

Mighty No. 9 is a tedious and bland platformer and while I have never played a Mega Man game before, I have a feeling that this game does little to live up to the legacy that those games had.

Mighty No. 9 is the spiritual successor for Mega Man, but has its own identity. This is not always a good thing however. The game contains a few way-too-childish elements, but the gameplay should keep you satisfied for hours.

It still has a lot of baggage to unload (the 3DS and Vita ports aren't even dated yet), but most Mega Man fans will find solace in the fact that it didn't end up being a disaster. Other than the art style, of course.

Mighty No. 9 began life as one of the most anticipated concepts in recent memory. While there is fun to be had – especially where boss fights are concerned – there is an overall lack of fresh ideas to bring it all to life.

While it can feel rewarding to eventually squash a boss, you’ll very rarely be having fun while doing so – and that’s a feeling that carries through the entire experience.

The spiritual successor to Mega Man lacks context and piles on the technical mistakes. There's something to build upon here, but as of now, it's not exactly what we (or anyone) would call great.
  17. 60
Even with dull visuals and a little too much reliance on the past, in a world where Capcom has seemingly forgotten that the Blue Bomber exists, Mighty No. 9’s enthralling boss battles make it an okay substitute to fill that void for the time being.

The point is, despite its flaws, Mighty No. 9 is a good step toward reviving the Mega Man style in all but name. Hopefully the team will learn from their mistakes and make the next game the classic fans want it to be.

Not the instant classic we hoped for, but at least it can be fun for the hardcore gamers.

This is one of the most obvious times that a game just tries to capitalize on what you could call the 'nostalgia factor'. It doesn't offer anything you couldn't see in any of the earlier Mega man games and it isn't even more enjoyable than any of the classic games. Just a failed product.
  21. Jun 20, 2016

Mighty No. 9 appears to be caught in two minds about whether it wants to make a Mega Man-style game for novices or veterans, and that indecision unfortunately prevents it from being anything close to mighty. Combine the release's well-meaning but misguided attempts at accessibility with sub-par graphics, puzzles, and an insane difficulty spike towards the end, and you end up with a title that's not very mega at all.

If you Kickstarted this game, you’ll likely be fairly satisfied with how Mighty No. 9 turned out. However, it’s far from ground breaking in terms of its visual style, has some rather rage inducing sections of the level design, and the dash is imprecise. That said, the majority of the game is fairly fun to play and it certainly captures the spirit of Kenji Inafune’s Mega Man franchise, it just lacks a certain amount of polish.

Mighty No. 9 is a game hamstrung by its own hubris. By choosing to rely upon archaic design decisions and outdated level design it fails to achieve the level of success so clearly desired by the developers.

With all of the delays this game has seen, why do these problems still exist? Mighty No. 9 isn’t a terrible game, but it isn’t a good one either. With an end result like this, I feel pity for every person who backed it.
  26. Jun 20, 2016
    56
Despite its pedigree, Mighty No. 9 doesn’t seem to have a good sense of what was fun about Mega Man, or 2D action-platformers in general. There are brief moments where its pieces come together, but even then it’s hamstrung by its visually joyless art and animation. The soul of the Blue Bomber just isn’t here, and worse yet there’s no endearing personality of its own, and as a result, Mighty No. 9 feels much more like a second-rate imposter than a spiritual successor.

Even without its specific history, Mighty N° 9 would have been a disappointment. Unable to bring innovative features, the new game from Keiji Inafune also fails to modernize the classic recipe of the Megaman series.

Keiji Inafune fails in his attempt to resurrect his own son Mega Man. The fans won't find that the level shown on the classic. Novices will feel it as a tedious and generic game.
  30. 55
Mighty No.9 fails to recapture the spark of its Mega Man heritage in any meaningful way. There’s not much inherently wrong with how it plays, but it is haphazardly presented and not quite as enjoyable as it could be.

Mighty No. 9 then is definitely a missed opportunity, not only in terms of crowdfunded gaming but also as a homage to what made the Mega Man games so great in the first place.

If you were waiting for a new platforming masterpiece from Keiji Inafune you will be disappointed. If you were waiting for a decent platforming game you will also be disappointed. Mighty No. 9 looks like a rushed product, devoid of any pathos in its making.
  33. 50
It was certainly compelling enough for me to want to finish the game. There are also plenty of challenges to help hone platforming skills which ultimately do help in finishing the regular levels. As a game that is clearly supposed to appease Mega Man fans who will likely never get a new game in the series ever again, it falls spectacularly short of their expectations, particularly those that assisted in the crowdfunding campaign.
  34. Jun 27, 2016

Mighty No. 9 can have its moments when its platforming and shooting tickles that same nostalgic bone that makes us love Mega Man, but its poor design makes it more frustrating than novel.
  35. Jun 23, 2016

Mighty No. 9 had an incredible amount of potential. The pedigree of talent behind the project justifies fans’ expectations for a platformer that is full of personality and high-quality action. This game has neither of those things; sure, it works, but the game feels completely lifeless. Characters lack the charm and depth that they need to be memorable, and the story is underdeveloped and plain.
  36. Jun 23, 2016

Mighty No. 9 attempts to breath fresh life into the 2D platforming genre but it lacks the polish and magic that made Inafune’s iconic series such a staple of 90s gaming.

This highly anticipated platformer falls flat on its back, having inferior controls, level design and overall presentation compared to the game series it attempts to recreate.

It’s an unoriginal platformer built around nostalgia that plays an awful lot like Mega Man, except it’s not 1987 anymore.

    50
Mighty No 9 does present a few concepts that feel like they could have been the next iterative step. Even if it had avoided its many pitfalls and baffling design choices, though, it's likely a few decades too late for such minor improvements.
  41. Jun 20, 2016

Frustrating to play and a pale imitation of Mega Man, Mighty No. 9 is unlikely to command the same reverence as its older cousin.
  42. Jun 20, 2016
    50
For a game that's meant to bear the legacy of a classic series, Mighty No. 9 barely succeeds. It may rouse excitement from time to time, but by and large, it lacks a pervading sense of artistry, both in its level design and presentation.
  43. Jun 20, 2016

It's so pervasively dull. Where other prominent throwbacks have recaptured the beating heart of the games that inspired them, Mighty No. 9’s familiar pieces are thrown together without a driving vision. Hopefully the super fighting robot’s next successor is more worthy.

  51. 40
Mighty No. 9 just never does enough to justify its price tag, when so many downloadable titles offer equally solid side-scrolling gameplay. Ultimately, Mighty No. 9 is a competent side-scrolling platformer, a nostalgic game built from a franchise that veteran gamers have never ever forgotten...But unlike Mega Man, this game is destined to be forgotten.

If Keiji Inafune wants Mighty No. 9 to become as beloved as his blue-and-cyan predecessor, he and his team would do well to think deeply about modern updates to his classic formula to figure out what it is that makes them work so well. As is, Mighty No. 9 is a mighty, mighty failure.
  55. 40

Mighty No. 9 was designed to be a spiritual successor to Mega Man. If any of that spirit was ever here, it's long since decayed. The game is incredibly frustrating, suffers from bad design choices throughout and offers only middling enjoyment.

Mighty No. 9 is a game that does not have any impact on the videogame industry. We were promised the rebirth of the Mega Man saga and instead we face an empty promise. If you want to play a good game made by Inafume, switch on your old Nintendo.

There is a germ of a great game at the heart of Mighty No. 9. The central rhythm of barreling through stages and softening up foes with expertly placed shots before zipping in at the perfect moment to collect your reward deserves to be better fleshed out and more thoroughly explored. But it also deserves a game that doesn’t send huge amounts of your progress up the chimney because you got a game-over, a technique that ought to have gone extinct back in the arcade days. It deserves a game that isn’t so tragically generic looking and a soundtrack with at least one song worth whistling.
