This is a game about discovery and once you start looking you begin to see that the developers have laid the foundations for another great series. Sprinkled throughout the quests and lore in the game it is obvious that there is a lot of intrigue going on; What happened to the Milky Way? Who is the Benefactor? Where did the Scourge come from? Who made the Remnant? What makes this all more delightful is that with the foundation left by the original series, there is room for countless theories and endless speculation on all these questions and I expect the answers we get will be great.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a game laboring under the burden of a herculean legacy. Unfortunately because of this it means that it will be picked apart and compared to the nostalgic memory of its ancestor. When you boil it all down, I feel that Andromeda sets the stage for a series that truly has the potential to outshine its predecessor.

I have played just over 20 hours of Andromeda and i'm loving it, the story is good, the characters are interesting (especially the squad mates), the combat is excellent, the graphics are good looking even on the base ps4, it's exploration is good and the facial animations are much better than at launch.

but it's not perfect, the character creator is okay at best, and it has frame rate issues sometimes but thankfully not when it matters the most. I was obviously playing a patched version and if i had played it on launch like most others i would have given it a lower score but the fact is Andromeda has seen it's fair share of fixes and there are definitely more to come

Disclaimer: i am not a Mass effect veteran and i did not play the originals, but i did watch full Youtube letsplays on all the original games and loved the stories in those games as well.

The game is good. There are minuses but they are everywhere and facial animation and the like. Bioware have repeatedly said that they work with these technologies in the first races before everything was different according to this, they can forgive it, but in general the game was like. Only she is too tolerant here they bent the stick.

TL;DR - Try this game for yourself before listening to the negativity, but wait a couple months before buying.

My honest score would be an 8.5, but the amount of hate people are giving this game without giving it an honest try is going to deter people who may actually love it. Launch day user reviews for a 100+ hour game simply cannot be accurate. I've played about 40 hours of this

I've played about 40 hours of this game now, and I'm addicted! The worlds get more impressive as you go and the environment art is stellar. Yes, the facial animations seem jarring at first, but I haven't noticed them in about 20 hours now. I've been too preoccupied jump-jetting around massive worlds, picking off baddies with the impressive (and deep) combat system, and gliding on ice in the Nomad. This game isn't without bugs, but it's nothing we haven't all seen in other games. And many will be patched in the coming months, hence my advice to wait before buying. I'm not a very sentimental person, but there was a moment I was wandering around the Nexus (Citadel 2.0) after completing a story mission, and I nearly teared up at the overwhelming feeling that I was back in the Mass Effect universe. They catch that unique vibe that made the original games so great, you just have to endure a few hours of rushed dialogue and exposition first. But the good stuff is in there, I promise! You will find the space hamster again if you look hard enough!

The multiplayer is very similar to ME3, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've loved using the APEX HQ app at work, and returning to the game at night to a bundle of goodies waiting in campaign mode.

Too many of these reviews are fueled by fans still hurt by ME3's ending or people who care ENTIRELY too much about the animations that occur in the decision wheel conversations. If that's your big grief that's ridic. it's such a minor portion of the game. I've played the full EA access trial and I'm about 15 hours in at this point. This is a great game. No doubt about it. Is this game perfect, no it definitely is not, but I challenge anyone to find me a game of this size and scope that's fully polished upon initial release. It rarely if ever happens. I'm sure someone can find something wrong with every initial launch of a game in current next-gen era. We've demanded so much perfection from these dev companies that is quite frankly unrealistic at times. We demand more content, open spaces / worlds, multiplayer, high-end graphics, and expect it all to run at a smooth 60fps. Sure you'll get a gem from time to time, but I wouldn't say it's the norm. Every major software has bugs and is addressed via fixes in subsequent releases. Not sure why the video game industry is viewed so differently. I've been a huge fan of this series and I'm enjoying myself so far and I keep wanting to play more. Please don't be discouraged by the negativity surrounding this game. 90% is not warranted and based on unrealistic expectations in my humble opinion, but reviewers are reviewers and have to bring the controversy. I am 20 hours in to this game, and I see people who I suspect have not played or made it out of the trial, rating this as a 0/10. This is not a perfect game but I am giving it a score of 10 to balance out the zeros. My score would likely be an 8.5 to 9.

Positives: Fantastic fast paced combat with awesome environments. The characters seem to gel, and the story is really a great new take on the Mass Effect lore. There is so much to discover here, with such a balanced and detailed experience. Good side quests are back as well. I could complain about lame fetch quests that appear, but every RPG has those, even the Witcher 3.

Negatives: I miss the power wheel, and I hate that the weapon wheel is mapped to the centre button on PS4. I also wish you could select the specific powers your squadmates use in combat, as of now, you can only direct them to specific locations, not their actions. The dialogue delivery from supporting characters is not as well done as the original trilogy and some characters have a dead stare in their eyes. Inquisition like conversation wheel is not as enjoyable as Paragon/Renegade, but this grows on you to be fair.

If you are an RPG fan, and especially a story driven third person combat fan, you should purchase this game. If you are a Mass Effect especially, I don't personally see how you could miss this title. If you have never played Mass Effect or are not a big fan of the above, you should wait for a sale, because you will likely not have the patience for any of the story development.

Since Scott Ryder looks like an identical twin of a certain handsome game review I know, not mentioning any superken from superkengaming names...
    I didn’t have to edit a thing
But if you do choose to customize, the game will make a twin version of your character who does show up in your story…
Mass Effect fans seem to hate this entry...
But im not a mass effect fan and I loved it.. I played the first 2 games in preparation for this one and found them to be pretty boring... Mass Effect Andromeda is more of my play style… and without having played mass effect 3, As of right now, Andromeda is my favorite game in the series…
For the fans of the series, there’s a lot here to love as much as there is to be desired…
    And I don’t mean just the aliens…
There are tons of missions to do here outside of the campaign, including loyalty missions like everyone loves from mass effect 2…
But there is a noticeable lack of emphasis on your crew this time around…
Because the story is about making a planet inhabitable for life forms to call home
    Wasn’t really interesting though…
So lack of interesting story, boring crew members... I understand why fans of the series don’t like this game... what about the rest
Lets get the elephant out of the room right now
You cant romance natalie dormers character
I should honestly stop the review right here and give it a 0/10 for playing with my heart like that…
But they did throw some real nudity and booty in here.. So slightly forgivable... but... Natalie Dormer guys...
How could you do this to me?
But the worlds in mass effect Andromeda are beautiful and the campaign which takes about 12 hours one its own is actually fun to run through…
The direction system does a great job of telling you where to go, though the command to show the point on the map frustratingly doesn’t always work…
Not sure on the rules behind when it will and when it won’t…
But the fact that clicking down doesn’t always show you where you’re going to is annoying…
And many missions here are set in an open world that you can explore with the nomad, that drives perfectly…
You also have a jump pack for hopping gaps and doing sick in air kills with your weapons that are equippable with mod slots…
And you can upgrade these weapons as well as unlock special moves for you and your crew with the skill points you get for leveling up…
My only issue with the campaign is the annoying scanning…
You’re asked to scan items way too frequently, stopping the flow and excitement of missions…
And the final stretch of the game feels recycled… and therefore feels like a grind…
I was happy with the games ending..
But the boring final stretch to get there almost seemed unworthy it, especially with a forgettable throwaway feeling boss fight…
I understand why mass effect fans don’t like this game... its very action third person cover based shooter heavy... very few dialog options that matter to make this feel like an rpg…
But if you look at this as just a game without the name mass effect attached, Andromeda is a solid experience…
People have noted animation problems.. but I didn’t notice any in my play through, and besides a few awkward transitions, my play through was fairly clean of bugs
And when you’re done with single player you can hop right into multiplayer where you’ll spend 15 seconds and realize you’re not going to waste your time on this garbage just like ea should have
This mode is a lazy and boring co-op objective based wave mission mode.
Every game developer in the world play uncharted lost planet 2 and lost planet 3 multiplayer
IF you don’t plan on making anything like them in your 3rd person shooter
save your time and money and don’t bother.
Despite the disappointing multiplayer, and disappointing RPG bioware DNA elements…
Mass Effect Andromeda is a solid experience that as a 3rd person shooter action adventure fan you shouldn’t pass up
    I give Mass Effect Andromeda
    an 8/10

People seem to have taken all the hype about the animations and blown it out of the water, as if the game is now unplayble, while they are annoying in many cases, humans especially they aren't game breaking, the devs know and have said that it is in their plans to fix them, which in all reality means you can wait alittle bit before getting. The game has a decent story, its nothing oscar worthy, but still enjoyable if you liked the universe that the other mass effects were in. Its refreshing to see some new faces and to see where they will go from this game. The aliens species look great, its mostly the humans animations that need the work, because on many occassions it looks like your character is starstruck or dumbfounded by the conversation but this game is better than most "supposed" bad games,

My advice is stick with the critic reviews, but seems that most of the real user reviews are drowned out by those still salty about the ME3 endings, feminists or like the one guy who claimed he played 50+ hours when the game only allowed 10hrs early access and less then 24 hrs after the release of the game. The bad reviews are quite hilarious so i won't stop you to read them, some good ones in the mix, but most are just laughable, but enjoy, good luck to you!

It has a compelling story about adventure, discovering a part of a new galaxy, finding never before seen (by Milky Way inhabitants, at least) technology and meeting new species of people. This is everything that I hoped ME:A would be.

The music's pretty good too. The moment I turned the game on and heard the music for the title screen, I loved it.

Based on the reviews I've seen, most of the negative reviews come from people who probably didn't even play the game and just hate EA because it's the popular thing to do. A few even criticized Bioware's inclusive policy more than the game itself, which is a useless critique.

To anyone taking the time to read this, try the game out for your self. If the bugs worry you, give it some time, because Bioware will patch those out and make the game even better.

Based on the bugs that the game shipped with, I would normally rate this game a 7 or 8 out of 10, and then increased my score once patches came out that fixed the problems. Thanks to the toxicity of the "fanbase," however, I'm giving it a 10 to help offset some of the BS reviews I've read on here.

You know, like when you used to pick up a broom and take the head off, and pretend it was a wizard's staff and put yourself smack bang in the middle of an epic moment on a battlefield? When I got my hand on the game, I closed the blinds in my apartment, turned my TV and sound system on high, and let the immersion begin. However here in lies some of M.A's biggest faults, "Immersion".

I am sure anyone reading this review already knows what I am referring to (bugs, comical facial expressions or lack of expressions). The environment that you are thrown into is beautiful. From the very first planet you try to make habitable, to the exterior and interior of your ship, to the combat system, it is all absolutely perfect. But humans are naturally programmed to recognize facial expressions and body language, so much so, that it makes up the majority our our interpretations of the subjects intentions and emotions. I hear in the voice acting what the writers are trying to tell me, but it doesn't gel with the characters facial expressions or lack there of.

The story line is acceptable. I feel for some characters and not for others. For example, when I return to my ship after having done all I can on a planet, I fast forward through the conversations with some of my team as I have no interest in their story. Whilst there are some characters that I care about, and even one character that I tried to stay faithful towards, but I fell into temptation with another female character and hit the "sure, let's fool around" command.

For exploring you are given a mean looking 6 wheeler rover to explore planets with, along with a satisfying build tree for skills, weapons and armor. You do not however get to build armor for your teammates which is a bit of a let down, and their skill tree is a bit limited, but you can still make them stronger in the begging in certain areas to choose whether or not to party with tanks, snipers, etc.

The online game play allows you to do something different in between quests which I thoroughly enjoy. It also gives you in game single player rewards for your main story which is a nice touch.

Look, I think the only thing that holds this game back is the bugs on the characters faces, body language and some game play. Otherwise this game has amazing game play features, good story line, relate-able characters, a fantastic and gorgeous open world galaxy to explore, and replay value.

M.A Andromeda is detailed, there is lot of l.o.r.e to imerse yourself into, the quests and interesting and even though some side quests can be repetitive, there is still a great satisfaction clearing a planet of all quests. M.A is a great game and shouldn't be judged by reviews, but rather by keeping an open mind and realizing that if you had fun as a 12yo pretending to be a wizard in your own mind, then you can easily become a pathfinder in the Andromeda Galaxy using a PS4 Pro and 4K TV.

    Enjoy comrades.

The story is engaging and while at the beginning it lacks the "weight of the world" feeling of the trilogy, the pressure rises with time and oh does it get personal.
I loved the combat system since I've greatly enjoyed using melee weapons and vanguard strategy combined with tech. I did not encounter many awkward animations though I have seen some minor bugs with npc's stuck in weird spaces - nothing game-breaking.
The music is a bit underwhelming, especially at the last fight of the game but I found myself addicted to a few dj compositions you can find in your Pathfinders quarters or bars/clubs on certain planets.
Overall, I would give this game a solid 8,5/10 but since everyone is trashing it waay more than it deserves things hot personal and I raised the note. Fight me!

Mass Effect Andromeda, while an alright game (about 7-8/10) is definitely a flawed game. I don't think I have to tell you about the numerous animation bugs I've seen in the game. I'm pretty sure memes helped enough in that regard. I will say that I myself personally thought the story was okay. It didn't seem to have the same urgency or weight as the OT, but I didn't really expect it to. We're not fighting Reapers again in this game. As well, I thought the beginning part of the game was rather slow, with the first two companions you receive not being fleshed out as well as they could've been. However, as the game went on I did enjoy it more.

In the end, while not being the perfect game I expected, it still was alright.

This game is by no means perfect, but it certainly doesn't deserve the number of negative reviews it is receiving. Sure, the human facial animations are a bit weird and awkward at times, and I've noticed a few technical issues here and there; but honestly, it's not that much different than my experience with Dragon Age: Inquisition or Fallout 4, and it doesn't break the game experience for me.

I don't expect top-notch graphic/technical quality from Bioware - they produce great stories and great characters and have always had some short-comings elsewhere. To expect differently is to be deluded. Most companies do not have the time or freedom to produce a game to whatever insane standards people create for them. And I'm looking at you Witcher 3 and the arm-less dwarf and book-in-head woman and crashing to grey geometry world before a horse race. You can still call a game good or even great even with it's flaws. Andromeda is one of these games that people just need to give a break to.

So far, I've found the characters interesting. The voice acting can be iffy at times, but most of it is pretty decent. The environments are beautiful. I was near immediately engaged in the story and the mystery of this new system. I've enjoyed doing the side quests around the Nexus. I've enjoyed exploring Eos. I know there is so much potential in this game, and I can't wait to discover it all. I never expected some grand new twist on "let's go planet to planet and fight aliens" - that is exactly what Mass Effect is. Why does it need to be some ground breaking amazing story? I haven't seen a ground breaking amazing story that was super original anywhere in entertainment recently, but there HAVE been lots of many good or great stories, and so far Andromeda is shaping up to be one of them.

The menus can be a bit daunting at first, but once you figure out where everything is, it's smooth sailing from there. My only major complaint is the travel time between systems and planets on the galaxy map. It looks gorgeous, but it's slow, annoying, and wastes time. I still explored and read about every planet I could though. Some people also find the scanning tedious, but I don't mind throwing up my scanner for everything.

At the end of the day, it's truly not as game-breakingly bad as everyone makes it out to be. Give the game a chance and judge for yourself. Bioware never promised things that weren't given. Andromeda is, 100%, exactly what I was expecting, and in fact, it's surprised me in many ways.

The story doesn't have the complexity or intensity of, say, kotor, but it's still interesting enough to keep me engaged, and it really does have a bunch of *really good moments*. I don't *love* all the members of my crew, some are falling flat (looking at you Cora), but others are more interesting, and I've only gotten a few steps into my relationship with Suvi so it's too early to say how interesting the romancing gets. I'm a little overwhelmed by the million little sidequests which, if I were to do them all, would make it feel like an eternity between story points, but at least they're not mandatory. Just wish they'd spent their energy on fewer quests / no multiplayer and put it into other aspects of the game. Oh, and because the mako was terrible, gotta say I love the nomad! I love a vehicle I can drive crazy reckless in and not crash, that's pretty practical for someone who drives like a Montrealer.

However, once the first couple of hours are completed, the game opens up into a true open world(s) game that is utterly incredible. The story lines are compelling, the characters are very likable and relatable, and the dialogue is very realistic. Conversations don't fit the typical rigid and over exaggerated format common to many games, which may not work for gamers who are more accustomed to interacting with video game NPCs than having conversations with people in the real world. After 60 hours of gameplay, Mass Effect: Andromeda has impressed me more than I had ever expected and has become one of my favorite titles. I enjoyed this game even more than the original series. The story isn't quite as interesting as the reaper concept, but the rich open world exploration teeming with fun missions to do combined with the amazing lore the Mass Effect series has built up made this one of the funnest games I have ever played. Neither me nor my wife has experienced any glitches or strange/ugly facial animations with our Ryders. It took me a couple tries to design one that I liked, but once I did I had no issues throughout my play through. It seems that a lot of the people giving Mass Effect: Andromeda negative feedback are going into the game expecting to find something bad, only instead of reviewing it objectively, they critically search for flaws to reaffirm their expectations. This type of behavior, along with people rating it who have never even played it has left a game easily worthy of a 10/10 with a user score of 4.6. Expand

I suspect a large part of the negativity comes simply because of anger left over from the very end of Mass Effect 3 (which I also hated). It is fair enough for a follow up game to do less well when a previous game did something wrong, but this reaction was far overboard.

When I finished the game a few days ago, I almost immediately started replaying it. This is a fun game, where the problems are less important than the good parts. I debated between an 8 and a 9, but this game gave me a lot more enjoyment even than games I've rated higher. It is definitely better than other open world games I've played. This is not as good for its time as the previous titles were in theirs, but it still has numerous improvements over the trilogy, and only a moderate amount of worse parts. I'm a huge fan of the trilogy, and this isn't that, but I really hope they make a Mass Effect Andromeda 2.

Note: This is a significantly more difficult game than earlier Mass Effect titles, and some people may not like the design of the encounters.

I have about 30 hours put into the single player so far, about 15 hours in MP. Definitely a letdown compared to the original ME trilogy - especially in regards to the technical aspects of the game. I'm actually enjoying the story and re-integrating myself back into the lore. Multiplayer continues to be a treat.

The technical issues is where this game just fails for me They're glaring and really can't be ignored.. From the game locking up when cutscenes don't initiate properly, to horrible teammate AI, to the oft-memed facial animations and static eyes. I feel some of the same issues that plagued the original trilogy are still here and then some.

Overall - I'm enjoying the game. But the glaring technical issues make me believed this is a rushed release - which is likely out of Bioware's hands as we know EA loves their money. It's a damn shame too. I also can't fathom how they added only two new species to the game. We're in a completely different galaxy.

Multiplayer 9/10 for me though. Having a blast playing it with my buddies.

The Multiplayer is great too. Less waves than before but new weapons to unlock and new classes to explore, while the old favourites are still there. There both is and isn't a lot of new weapons in game. After a certain point you can only do variations of existing weapons in any game, though they do expand the weapons where they can. I really like how it integrates into the singleplayer too. Makes it feel way more involved. Also it's kinda fun sending out the Apex teams on missions too.
They use the frostbite engine which works great though they did drop the ball back in beta when it comes to the animations. Stick with the default character until that's fixed and you'll be fine though. I did restart after about 4 hours, and it took me about 20 minutes to catch back up, by skipping all the cutscenes.
Anyway, back to the game. See you all in the MP!

Is it perfect? no, no game is perfect in my opinion, cause if a game is perfect that means there is no room for improvement. Are there flaws? yes, but they are less apparent the further you get in the game. Do the human like characters(this includes asari) look derpy? yes, does it need work? yes. Are all games perfect on launch? no. From what I've seen in my life as a gamer no game is 100% perfect off the start, this isn't the days of old school where you had to get it right off the bat. With today gaming publishers can patch as they go, players just need to voice feedback. Will the flaws get fixed? pretty sure they've said a patch is on the way, or in the works. Anyways, everyone is entitled to their opinions, but atleast make informed reviews after actually playing the game. Most people seem to be trash talking the game for the sake of trash talking it, because it's the in thing to do. Now if you actually played the game and decided you didn't like it fine, personally i'm enjoying myself greatly. The campaign is fun and new, combat is sleek and fluid, and multiplayer is a blast. The combat system is top notch, the skill system is better than any previous game (you aren't locked down to one style for the entire game, but can rather fluidly switch back and forth), the graphics (aside from some animations, which I will comment on) are beautiful, and the story actually benefits from the lack of railroading of the previous games.

You actually feel like your trying to colonize new worlds. The exploration is rewarded and doesn't remove you from the experience like it did in the previous games (there's never a justifiable reason to go mining when the Reapers are destroying worlds). The character interactions are real, not always polished, but neither is life. There's more humor, more awkwardness, more stuttering, and less incessant heroism, but that all goes together to make a more meaningful galaxy.

There are 4 different difficulties to suit your style. There is a multiplayer that follows closely on Mass Effect 3. There is a condensed ship with no loading screens between levels. There is a great deal of quality of life improvements from start to finish.

The only down side (and I struggle to call it that, because I didn't even notice until it was brought up by others) is the animations of some human characters and the apparent lack of diversity in the character customization. Since I use the default on Mass Effect games, I haven't realized the latter claim (which is true, there's not enough options in customizing your own Ryder), but the animations aren't gripping and terrible. In fact, unless that's your number one focus in a game (and for some it is), you'll probably barely notice. I don't.

Don't be fooled by 0 and 1 score reviews that make the claim that this "Isn't Mass Effect", as this definitely is a Mass Effect game, and worthy of the name, despite its handful of flaws. Expand

This is what EA wants. It's not Mass effect, it's SPACE BATTLEFIELD- Boring Single Play and Mega Funny Multiplay. I like battlefield a lot for good multiplay only, but it's not I want from Mass Effect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is my review of Mass Effect Andromeda (Spoilers):
Story - The story is flat out amazing, having the concept mechanics and plots of all the previous Mass Effect series and have the new generation take place 634 years into the Mass Effect 3 future gives a fresh start on an old series. Seeing a new galaxy, planets, along with their environment and aliens give a nice relationships to all Mass Effect veterans. Archon is the most memorable Boss to remember and he exactly reminds the veteran players of Sovereign back in ME1 and for the Kett along with their culture does remind the veterans of the Collectors and Reapers knowing the Kett take any/all alien species and splice their DNA into their own to achieve "perfection" in all the galaxies. But it got me disappointed that Andromeda did not remind the veterans of the reapers, the ME3 war, Shepherd, the Normandy, the crew, Quarians and mentioning an Asari leader in the Nexus for both veterans and new players to know about.
Gameplay - Love the gameplay, changing the activity from free run or combat run anytime gives whole new perspective in the Mass Effect franchise especially the open world. Driving the Nomad is fun as well as the player can never get stuck no matter what environment the player is located. Character customization is amazing as Alec Ryder's face gets copied off from the males custom face that the player created. Only problem from the male customization is the lazy left eye either before and during gameplay, as for the female customization is perfectly fine. The level up system brings back the ME3 style of choosing whats best for both the character and the player when exploring planets, fighting tough enemies and completing missions. The only problem I believe it's an issue is the player cannot input allies powers on the power wheel to select them for helping out in situations and to perform combos. Even though having combat, biotics and tech powers in one chart to have the player perform unique combos with them is amazing as well.
Characters - Ryder and the title pathfinder have given out a name for themselves in the franchise, the pathfinder finds a planet, finds a way to make the planet safe and to be colonize by activating secrets Vaults who were created by ancient beings that were similar to the Protheans and gives the player the option of having the place be filled with either scientist or military to keep the planet safe. The crew is great as well and give so much reminder of the original Mass Effect crew. I'll talk about that in another video when I have the time but in conclusion for the crew they are interesting to talk to and deserves to be part of the Mass Effect series. What's disappointing is there is no Paragon or Renegade anymore along with the QTE's of either Paragon or Renegade but the player can change their Ryder's personality in which their allies perspective changes and which dialogue to choose from during conversations. The player can choose either the Heart Warming comedy Ryder who cares for their allies or be the Smart serious Ryder who gets the job done, in which all depends on how the gameplay goes.
Multiplayer - The Multiplayer is exactly like Mass Effect 3 but only has one mode called Horde Mode with only the Kett and the Remnant to fight on each wave the player progresses on. There's not much lag when playing online with other players nor does the server crash when constantly playing online for a while. The multiplayer's accessories is a little disappointing, but the combat gameplay of constantly fighting Hordes of enemies will never cease to be boring.
Conclusion - Story does not give proper references for veterans, gameplay is fantastic, characters are well remembered and the Multiplayer is fun but boring at the same time. Mass Effect Andromeda is a welcoming Sci-Fi open world game for both Veterans and New Comers of the Mass Effect series and hopefully the next one's story references will be better.
Final Verdict: 8/10 - The game is supremely fun to play and could play the game again just to know what happens when the player chooses the other choices and exploring the Andromeda galaxy.
Buy, Not Buy or Rent: Buy - There aren't many other Sci-Fi games that have an open world like Mass Effect.
P.S. I romanced Vetra and romance Suvi in the female version.

The combat is insanely satisfying. The upgrade tree, class selection and weapons all come together to allow you to tailor it to your style. Jaal and Drack were the stand out characters in terms of depth, the rest were good but felt pushed to the way side.

Glitches and dialog are really what let this game down. It turned from the ultimate space nerds dream to a bit more of a bro shooter. The dialog at times is really awful and cringey. Glitches were also a problem, one such glitch was so bad I had to turn my PS4 off just to get out of it. It also glitched on the end level which set me back hours. However this wasn't a huge problem as I enjoyed the combat, which really held the game up. 75 hours of gameplay later, and I certainly feel like I got my moneys worth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have almost finished this game and I'm willingly going to play again. The issue with this game, besides the graphical glitches which can be horrifying if using the default or just using an unedited pre-set head, is the same issue I have with Dragon Age Inquisition when you start out. That issue is a boring and overly long first act. Things really do kick up after you escape the Archon for the first time and characters start to open up the exact same way they did in Dragon Age.

I actually blame the writers for the dull characters since most of them seem to have written characters the exact same way in, you guessed it, Dragon Age Inquisition. This is on the other hand and change of form for the Mass Effect franchise that not a lot of fans don't like, and it also feels like a reboot of the first 2 games smashed together which I admit was something I had already thought before playing but those thoughts were only reinforced. I felt for each of the characters after the first act, I wanted to see them succeed and not get hurt even though I know they are fictional. And I have to give the writers credit since I didn't give a **** about a lot of characters from Dragon Age Inquisition.

There are issues with the game running like crap sometimes for seemingly no reason at all. It could either be in a field of grass on a planet or in the Tempest, it will just start to chug near the end of the second act. Also, the facial animations, although some of them might have been fixed since I saw some online that I never saw in game, it's unacceptable that they would focus so hard on the combat to leave the most basics part of the game so ****ty.

Speaking of combat it is great. Similar to MGSV where the gameplay was it's saving grace, for me at the very least, Mass Effect Andromeda's combat is good and I didn't even take advantage of all of the gimmicks they added. It's fun and I don't complain when I have to fight in a quest or just in the story. I feel like a badass without trying too hard and not having to fight every little thing.

Most of my complaints can be fixed with a few patches so maybe after it's all done I can feel good about giving them a 8 or 9 but pretty worlds, convincing characters, and tight combat doesn't make up for the fact that there are tons of problems and BioWare should have maybe delayed the game again to iron them out instead of going with the build that they tested over the holidays.

After +20 hours played. Andromeda is a fair successor to the ME trilogy. Don't get me wrong, it is not a great successor, just fair.

The characters and writing are not nearly as bad as many first hour user reviews lead on. In fact, I personally quite enjoy the story so far, and the characters are easily distinguishable, albeit, after 20 hours of gameplay, I really like only two of them.

In fact, I personally quite enjoy the story so far, and the characters are easily distinguishable, albeit, after 20 hours of gameplay, I really like only two of them. That's one less than in the whole ME trilogy. I also enjoy the flippant version of Ryder quite a lot, and I think the writing of the main character is great.

Combat is OK, but not great. The cover system seems unfinished and on some areas there is virtually no viable cover available, making the battles pretty one sided. There is something oddly clunky about going in and out of cover as well, mostly because it is not always obvious what is a cover and what is not. I haven't messed around with the skills that much yet, but they seem to work as expected.

Graphics is a major gripe for lot of the red naysayers, and let's be honest, the animations look horrible. Coming from titles like Horizon, it's like looking at a PS3 game. The faces are just plain bad, and there is no excuse for that considering you spend 40% of your time looking at one.

The exploration is a bit of a hit and miss. On one hand, you are constantly wondering what you're going to encounter, but on the other hand, the free space exploration is dumbed down to pointless. The mini game of resource farming from planets is really, really, pointless from space, and mining on the rover is a huge pain. But, I like diving into new areas, and see what I can find, and that part is done well in this game.

Besides this, there are game crashing bugs riddled across the board, that are frustrating. Luckily I've only had a couple of minutes off roll-back so far, but I'm saving a great deal more often after crash number five.

As for the game, what little I've been able to play seems lovely. I57500k, 16GB DDR, GTX1080 and everything runs beautifully, looks wonderful too. Judging from the first couple hours, don't play it as ME4 but instead as its own standalone thing and I think it'll be fine.

Starting with the bad stuff: At the time of writing, the animation definitely looks a little odd, and I definitely ran into a few glitches which had me loading a recent save. The characters you meet are a bit hit and miss, with some seeming on a par with the earlier series, and others seeming a little underwhelming.

But, those are basically its only flaws, I couldn't put this game down until I had finished it. The combat system might be the best one yet in mass effect, the only thing I missed being the ability to control squad-mates more precisely, while there is a huge range of additional tactical options for your main character. The story sets up a new series very nicely, with a tonne of possible avenues for the game to explore.

I get the feeling that some people just wanted more of the original mass effect, which just wasn't possible given how that series ended. Taken as its own game, however, the only thing which lets it down are technical glitches which Bioware appear responsive to.

Andromeda however, much like it's template Inquisition, is a classic EA cash grab, attempting to capitalise on ignorant gamers drawn to a familiar logo. This iteration struggles to replicate even the most seemingly basic aspects of what a mass effect game should be. Interaction in dialog is heavily reduced from the previous entries and the facial animations have taken a huge step backward to a point where the game is immersion breaking and unintentionally hilarious, however, when the game does attempt to be humorous with inappropriately timed jokes amid combat it makes even the most cringe worthy of disney jokes seem passable. Ironically the shallow linear based gameplay of mass effect 2 and 3 are significantly more enjoyable than the tedious exploration based gameplay of Andromeda. Expand

Performance. Poor. Could have been better. Encountered some frustrating bugs, had some crashes to PS 4 "desktop". Also, sometimes there have been some severe FPS drops.

Plot. Fresh, interesting, felt like ME 1. Lots of exploration and backstory. Just what I needed.

Characters. Main Female character (Ryder) is great. Wolf is an amazing voice actress. All companions and main allies also are great. Except for Peebee, awful character, awful voiceover, awful everything.
Face animation did lack something, overall it was fine, with some minor setbacks though. Body animation is astonishing.

Visuals. Frostbite did it thing. Even on PS 4 the game looks really beautiful. All five main planets are masterfully done. I wish there was a planet with something close to pacific islands.

Gameplay. Great! Shooter part is challenging and pretty balanced. I really enjoyed the idea of changing character profiles on the go. RPG part is also present and it is a classic Mass Effect. Choices are hard and rewarding, hope to see them matter in the future.
Maybe to much scanning is involved, other that that nothing to complain about.

I expected something much worse from Bioware after their leadership problems and poor Inquisition. They impressed me once again. Reminded me why I love Mass Effect so much. I hope to see more games like Andromeda in future. Bioware still alive and kicking!

Gone is the platinum setting, so only bronze, silver, and gold remain; however, the waves seem harder. The same basic character progression is in place (six skill levels, first 3 with one skill, and the next 3 with 2 skills of which you choose 1). Leveling points are the same as well. I'm not sure how points for purchasing items in the store compare, as I have yet to make it through a bronze level 10. The weapons are more limited, but they will likely release more with DLC packs or updates. The maps feel like a step back from ME3. In fact, everything kind of feels like a step back from ME3. And in this missions you will be surprised by things which you did not seen in main story, so its worth to do them.

It seems like all that most people needed to trigger their latent feelings about Bioware was for reviews to validate their opinion. I cannot find any different explanation for the fact that Andromeda gets trashed for things that were equally wrong in the previous games (lack of new races, occasional meh dialogue, banging everyone) and Bioware games in general. The last time that Bioware did something (fairly) original was Jade Empire - Dragon Age is a derivate of the Lord of the Rings (and not even a good one, more like "movie fan" LOTR than someone who had actually read the book - even though the game itself is good), Mass Effect is basically Star Wars - what I mean is that any reasonable gamer doesn´t go to Bioware for originality. There´s always going to be pretty archetypical characters, bad guys, dialogues, ton of "romances" etc. Andromeda does not deviate from this much, however, overall I actually found it MORE original than its predecessors. I really liked the feeling of settling a new galaxy and discovering new places, and I actually really enjoyed the dialogue options, especially "logical" - it´s something you don´t see very often and it is a really nice alternative to the boring "good guy / bad guy" dichotomy.

The people who give it 0´s here are a little crazy too - have you actually ever played a 3/10 game? That would mean absolute boredom, control problems, horrible writing, prohibitive tech issues etc. Review scores should not be relative, nobody cares how much you love Bioware or what exactly you expected - some poor soul will come here and think that Andromeda is a 4.7 game, which it really really isn´t :))

Second of all, the dumb ass developers had the balls to re-add the terrible driving mechanic from ME1, and everyone HATED that. And now Bioware brings it back? What a bunch of bungling fools. I'm having so much fun with this game! The characters are fun to interact with, the locations are varied enough to keep things interesting, and the fetch quests I keep hearing people complain about are optional, so if you don't like them just don't do them! If I can happily spend over a hundred hours on a game and not get bored, I'm a fan.

It has been said that the game is too big and has too many side missions. Easy remedy: don't do em. Yes, there is some filler in there, but you are an explorer, so it gives some pertinence to, well, exploring. I've also read that the dialog is uninspired. Ok, some of it can be cheesy, but overall, I'd say its better than its predecessors. I'd go on to say that the voice acting is actually superior to 1-3 (which I also enjoyed). Not sure if it was an EA thing, or a Bioware thing, or hell, maybe just a bandwagon hate thing, but the scores on here are undeserved. I'm not an apologist for these companies (couldn't care less), but had to give my 2-cents on the bias scores. My definition of a good game is one that I want to continue playing after the credits roll. This game most definitely fit into that category.
PS This is my first review. Hopefully someone finds it useful. thanks
PPS I do agree that there are too few alien races in this game (could be a reason for that tho)

I thought this was a massive improvement on the desperately poor dragon age inquisition and the utter trainwreck that was ME3's conclusion. Given the open world nature i thought they managed to maintain a good level of interesting story content within that. Typical of bioware games there's an interesting and well crafted cast of companions. Peebee & Cora were my particular favourites.

There's a number of the original races present. Outside of that there's the mysterious remant, which left me constantly wanting to know more about. We get to meet a new ally, The Angarans, who certainly bring a new perspective to the table. The Kett(whilst lacking the grandeur of the reapers) seem to have been set up with potential for future development. I lost count of the amount of times i had to sit and think when presented with challenging grey choices.

Only real disappointment for me was a main villain who was slightly lacking and as someone who isn't a huge fan of characterising auto-dialogue, Ryder at times felt rather more fixed as a character unlike ME1-2 Shep where i as the player had more control over the character's personality.

Some of them (Sara, Keri, Lexi, Drack) have the potential to become my new all-time favourite characters in the ME Universe. All in all the game presents a good foundation for future adventures in Andromeda or the ME Universe in general.
The main storyline was very well done and offered a lot of fun, suspense and excitement, however, it could have had "more meat on the bones" in that it felt somehow somewhat "shorter" (without having a direct comparison at hand) than what I remember of the previous ME games. Especially some plot lines that relate to the Andromeda Initiative and its background could have been answered in the game and would have made the experience more satisfying to me. As is, I am left to wonder and wait (which is not a bad thing per se) for a resolution through DLC or a potential sequel.
The lighter tone of the game despite the dire circumstances after arriving in Andromeda was something I really enjoyed, especially in those character-focused moments (the bar fight with Drack, for example). Having played as Sara, the voice acting stood out as being very good. She had me in stitches at times. Overall, the quality of voicing the characters and bringing them to life was as enjoyably well done as in the original trilogy. Considering Andromeda is only one game, that is quite an achievement already.
Unfortunately, the game seems to suffer from a fair amount of - fixable - bugs. I experienced minor issues where I could not finish 2 side missions due to unknown reasons and having a couple of "accidents" in cutscenes where characters or the camera was not where it should have been. Aside from these problems - personally I found only one of them really very annoying - the game suffered from performance issues, especially on the player's ship and during the cutscenes prior to the finale (the "space battle" before the mission on Meridian).
It would have been fantastic if these issues had been taken care of before the launch of Andromeda, but considering that patches have already been issued and are in the "production pipeline" along with DLC, I am willing to "forgive" Bioware, considering how ridiculously good their games usually are (Mass Effect 2 - I am looking at you). Real people's facial animations aren't necessarily substantially better or worse than Andromeda's, in my subjective perception ;)
Summing up, I think Andromeda is a great tale and offers a solid foundation for future (character-driven) stories in the ME Universe and generally does more things fantastically right than abysmally wrong. :)

Some visual and audio issues remain. It's almost criminal how EA has treated this game, and a couple more months of quality control would have greatly helped this game's reputation. If you are new player and can download the patches, you will have a much better experience than any did at launch. The game remains the low watermark of the Mass Effect franchise, but it is better than most of the turkeys the big game companies have been churning out this generation.

Continuing the trend of disappointing sequels this generation, Mass Effect Andromeda comes in as the worst entry in the series. As much as I played it and enjoyed parts of it, I cannot ignore the utter boredom of scanning things and roaming mostly empty open world areas. I also cannot ignore the bugs, mostly because about once a day a bug would break the game and I would have to load a save game. I picked up the game after the first patch and recently played after the second patch. These are just band-aids and Bioware should be embarrassed about this product. EA, the publisher, should never have released the game in this state.

The gameplay is actually pretty fun. You can jump, dash, claim cover, and use a variety of powers and weapons. If not for the bugs and terrible, utterly awful inventory and load-out system, this would play like a typical well polished AAA game. The story isn't bad either, and the grand finale rates with the best in the series. The ending is followed by a nice epilogue perhaps in response to the negative reception to Mass Effect 3's ending. The connection between the player and this new world seems real, and reaching 100% viability for the Milky Way colonists seemed worth doing. This is very much a Mass Effect game.

The story also isn't very good. The dialogue is objectively terrible. Try as you might, you cannot make the main character seem competent. At some point I had to give up and just play as douche. For romance, I picked squadmate, Peebee, with equally cringeworthy dialogue. The only compliment I can give is that the voice lines were well delivered. (That is when the voice lines aren't played over each other because that's also a bug.) The story is also hampered the game's need to have you drive around an open world area. Remember how Arkham City forced you to drive the Batmobile whether you liked it or not? At least that Batmobile had guns. The Nomad in Adromeda has no weapons and ascends hills about as well as a WWI tank. The worst part is that driving around hardly seems worth the effort to find another identical base with another identical set of enemies to clear out. Simply put, the story problems with Andromeda start at high level and continue down into the most minute interactions.

The greatest sin of Andromeda is perhaps its laziness. The addition of alien races is lazy. You have two new races that are both humanoid and less alien than most of the creatures in the first three Mass Effect games. The main enemy, the Kett, is also lazy. They have no personality and seem to serve as an enemy for the sake of serving as an enemy. You can forget about the political manipulations of the first three games or talking down enemies with deft dialogue options. This is clearly the effort of the B team. Mass Effect fans should be offended. I know I am.

There's a bit of Fanservice for the old fans of the franchise and a lot of improvements in the craft / skills / combat areas. There's a lot of side missions and most are important to unlock more missions, loyalty from people and all. It's a very massive game, exploring every inch of the planets will take you a lot of hours per planet. My only complain would be that some missions end up being repetitive, so as some mini bosses (as Architects or Ascendants)

I only had 3 bugs in the gameplay. Animations have improved after the patch, playing a couple of hours won't give you the feel on the game, I honestly played the first 10 just exploring, no priority missions, people have been extremely absurd about rating this game below 7.

This game succeed in combat and driving simulation. I like all the new companions as much as the original, IF I remind myself that Andromeda is 1 game... not 3 game worth of character growth/attachment. A few narrative gems exists in the plot like Kadaran main quest. I wish those gems had been extended to take over the main plot.

Writing wise, there is a ton of rehash. A lot of "this is just a crappier version of the original." Lots of good political critique that fail to deliver entertainment value. Compare this to the original's balance between gripping narrative and morality lessons, it's quite clear new Bioware writers don't understand that the patrons giving them money deserve more than a peach that they didn't sign up for.

I still like my idea of Mass Effect 4 more. Reapers are in Andromeda, Shepard and crew goes there through a super relay, capable of transport. Story completely and directly inherits from the trilogy with all the fan favourites.

For those who have played, I've got to the point where we rescue the Anggaran from exultation opening up a lot of missions on Aya. That will be my frame of reference of how much I have played the game so far.

I have to say that I'm really enjoying my experience with the game. The overall premise of a large group of settlers from the Milky Way travelling for 600 years in stasis to try to establish a home in a new galaxy is interesting. Being tasked with the job of the Pathfinder to make the decisions and actions is alluring and I've been hooked on progressing through this game since I started.

First I will start with the cons:

    - I'm enjoying building relationships with everyone on the crew, but I guess I'm not exactly seeing a huge effect on my choices and maybe if there was a way to chart and easily see the status of my relationships with the main and prominent characters would be a good thing to look at.

    - The 3rd person movement can be awkward to control at times. It's not terrible, but not exactly smooth.

    - Though there are nav points in the game, there are times were following them in a straight line doesn't get you to where you need to go. It'll lead you to a wall and you gotta walk around the entire monolith in order to find where to go. Wasted a lot of time doing that so far.

    - Not a fan of the weapon wheel. While it's nice to go back and forth between your last two guns by holding down square, you eventually will have four weapons, and it just didn't seem effortless to switch to a specific gun.

    - The world do seem kinda barren, wish there were more areas to do some exploring on the side.

And for the pros of the game:

    - Though many are blasting the dialogue, I have really enjoyed all of the interactions with my crew on the Tempest. Sometimes I'll spend a good deal of time on my ship just running around talking to everyone after completing a major event.

    - While the movement can be awkward at times, I'm pleased with how well the combat works overall. Wasn't initially a fan of the automatic cover system, but it's grown on me over time.

    - The weapons and the abilities for combat have a great variety.

    - I like the upgrade system for yourself and your team. I like how it branches off to give you a choice later on too.

    - I really like how you can scan to earn research points which you can then develop and build weapons with. It's actually much better than buying from merchants until you get a perk for lower prices.

    - I haven't gotten too far into establishing a ton of outposts yet, but I'm intrigued with how it unfolds, with the new species in the new world mixing in with the species of the Milky Way and how they will work together. Just the overall notion of starting over in a new world is fun.

This game isn't perfect, but it isn't the 0 that so many people are giving either. People just like to be negative to be negative and you have to wonder if they actually put more than an hour into the game or even played it at all. It takes a while to fully get going and be able to branch out into different missions. It's pretty linear to start, but most RPG's are. I've fully enjoyed all the time I've put into the game and I'm just getting started.

Graphics and combat were amazing, but story and characters were not that good, for me that was the dissapointing part of the game. But it was fun, and i think Bioware can do a lot better.

So my thoughts on Andromeda. I think it was hyped far too much, trying too hard to mimic Dragon age Inquisition in terms of marketing. This was clearly a mistake as it was no secret that Andromeda's production suffered allot of issues, with most of the original creative team from the original trilogy either not coming on board or outright leaving during production. So essentially Andromeda was kind of starting from scratch. In all fairness, I think this was a good thing, after all, Andromeda was trying to establish itself as its own story, away from the original trilogy.

Sadly, with a fresh team also means inexperience, not necessarily in ability but with familiarity with the series. It is evident that the writing is very diluted, making it the weakest in the series so far. Clearly they wanted to add allot of dialogue to the game, and they did, but quantity is not better than quality. It seems to me that either the writing team was too small, or was rushed (likely, given EA's history.)

But, it does have some truely great moments and the writing does improve the deeper into the game you get. A shame that the game doesn't give a good first impression in that regard. It is clear that so much more is on the way as there are plenty clues and open plot points, but the game really could have used some more strong foreshadowing. It does foreshadow a bit, but too subtly.

Visuals are ....? Character models and up close animations are really sub par for this generation. There is no excuse since the Witcher 3 clearly showed this can be done better. But it's not always bad, it seems the human models were the ones primarily affected. The Krogan, Angara, Salarians and Turians did all work pretty well in that regard. Now the environments on all worlds were gorgeous. Each world utterly beautiful and its own. However, I never did manage to get my brightness setting right. It was either too dark, or too bright.

As for the main cast, I do feel they are underdeveloped. Drax and Jaal are pretty flushed out, Peebee is a bit annoying and bland at first, but does have some great banter and does get more interesting. Liam seems bland at first glance but is rather funny, just a shame he isn't developed more. Cora is boring and generic, essentially tje Jacob of this game. Vetra feels kind of out of place most of the time, perhaps feeling too much like she's trying to fill the shoes Garrus left but just feels like token character. Ultimately the team feels small and underdeveloped. Would be good to add a DLC character or two.

As for gameplay. It feels allot like the best parts of ME 1 mixed in with the best parts of ME 2 + 3. The Nomad is great improvement on the Mako. Curious that there aren't weapon upgrades for it. General combat is great and the ability mix and match abilities is great. Combat in gener is fun. Just a shame there isn't more variety in enemy types.

    Overall:
Mass Effect Andromeda has allot of flaws, and has allot of bumps to iron out. But that's just it, they're just bumps and Andromeda is still a great and fun game. It succeeds in separating itself from the original trilogy but needs work to garner the same level of praise. I am hopeful, as the groundwork is now laid out.

    Side Note:
Great ending! Wish ME 3 had one something like that.

Story: Starts off very slowly but picks up eventually. The main story for the game is not as good as the original mass effect but the branches of the story are very good especially the character background stories. This is a game of exploration and it really feels as such.

Gameplay: I LOVE the gameplay and combat of ME:A. As a person who absolutely loved the difficulty and strategy elements of ME:1 this game is a warm welcome back to the original. I am one of the few peoples who HATED what they did to ME in the change to ME2. Stripped of all complexity and changed to a shooter with a few powers thrown in. Gone are the days of pausing the game and positioning your allies and dictating their skills. You can't dictate what your allies use in combat and can only anticipate which honestly doesn't feel too bad. It feels more realistic than micro commands. Combat feels like a mixture of ME1 and ME3, As a person who enjoyed the RPG elements they have returned in folds. You can customize exactly how you want to play with stats and also adept gameplay has returned back to the days of ME1. Using adept powers feel powerful. I never played soilder route ever so I can't comment on the shooter mechanics which are so so.

Music: Honestly not as good as prior entries but acceptable space opera ambiance.

Controls: Takes time to get use to especially the auto cover which is frustrating at first but once you get used to it is fine.

Overall: As a person who greatly enjoyed the first mass effect game this is basically Original Mass effect 1.5. Exploration is the main key to this game as the explorable maps are HUGE. Took me 10 hours exploring just one of the main storyline maps and completing side quests. If you like space exploration with RPG elements, a good loot system and a strong crafting system this is the game for you.

After a few hours of Andromeda, I couldn't even bring myself to care enough to keep going. I didn’t care for the main characters whether I play as female or male, crew is completely unlikable and lame, story is uninspiring, to put it in simple terms: Chemistry didn't happen. There is nothing Mass Effect about Andromeda except in name and the "sci-fi" theme.
    Big disappointment.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is the Fallout 4 of the Mass Effect franchise. They spent so much time on the gameplay that they actually forgot to put some decent writing and characters in it as well. So instead of having a good story and sh*tty gameplay or good gameplay and a sh*tty story, it just has a mediocre story and mediocre gameplay, resulting in an over all forgettable experience.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is a massive disappointment. It stumbles in almost every department possible and is a chore to play. After going through 1/2 of the game I don't know why I continue playing it. Is it because I have gotten it as a birthday gift from my wife, or because I've invested so much time already and don't want to see it wasted?

After going through 1/2 of the game I don't know why I continue playing it. Is it because I have gotten it as a birthday gift from my wife, or because I've invested so much time already and don't want to see it wasted?

I'll start with saying I have loved every previous Mass Effect. Yes, third game's ending was disappointing but it was still a great game. I have especially loved how every piece of tech was explained in codex with serious respect to laws of physics. Yes, it was all made up but with intelligence and in a way that made it believable. I have appreciated it as a cosmology fan.

And here comes ME: A (whenever I use "AI' I mean 'Andromeda Initiative'). The tech used in this game would put Protheans, Reapers and almost everybody else to the shame. No need for mass relays, they are now installed on board (what about it being point to point tech?). AI has somehow acquired Geth telescopes that are able to see Andromeda Galaxy's systems that are 2 millions LY away in REAL TIME? Normandy was supposed to be astronomically expansive but somehow some agency supported by some multi-billionaire has built IN SECRECY a Citadel clone (just as huge) and four huge arc ships and sent them to Andromeda. They also have advanced Artificial Intelligences, some integrated into human brains. Black holes in ME: A cause lensing effect on objects between you and them (some new laws of physics right there).

Sweet mother of mercy, has nobody in New Bioware played any ME game before? I mean, I know it's sci fi but all of the things I have mentioned are not explained and beyond hardly believable. The explanations the writers have come up with are piss poor and are just mash ups of 'techy' and 'science' buzz words. Nothing is left of meaningful explanations from previous installments. This game would have been received much better if it had nothing to do with Mass Effect as it clearly doesn't want to play by Mass Effect's physics and science rules.

The story is non-existent. Whatever writing there is, it's so bad and disconnected from reality I won't even talk about it. Foster Addison is especially bad and I can't stand her, nobody would - I'll even go as far as saying people with such personality don't exist.

I also don't like how this game tries to push 'social agenda'. I'm only halfway through, but I have already seen transsexuals, gay technician, single sex families talking about adoption, a character with two mothers. That would really be alright if this game had more characters but this way, heterosexuals and heterosexual marriages are really in minority in this game or not AT ALL vocal. It's not the point however - in a game with such bad writing and story I'm pissed somebody spent so much time coming up with such meaningless arcs instead of working on better quests and story.

Going back to what is meaningful - story is so far horrible and boring. The game doesn't feel like Mass Effect AT ALL. Side quests are terribly bland and almost always come down to going somewhere and pressing TRIANGLE. It would be alright if they had some cool story behind them but its usually something along the lines: "Help us find ship parts - scan 10 ship parts spread on the map, kk? thx bye". Most of the time they don't have follow ups and you don't see any result of doing them or consequences. Dialogues are delivered with single emotion - both in voice and in animations (which are horrible, but you already know that).

Soundtrack is non-existent, literally. I have not yet heard a single track throughout my playtime (above 30 hours). Even main menu has some barely audible ambient.

Graphics as in models and shaders are okish. Animations are unbearable or simply non-existent.

The only redeeming qualities of this game are shooting mechanics and jet pack. Jet pack is almost the only thing carrying this game - it's super fun to use. If only inventory, research and crafting weren't such convoluted mess, I would love experimenting with more guns.

Mako, ekhem, Nomad is quite irritating. Has anybody playtested it? It's slow, jetpack barely lifts it off the ground and it has issues going up almost any hill (you have to switch it into different mode then, but it slows down considerably). Mako from ME1 feels like mobility demon compared to Nomad.

I would sum it all up this way: ME: A is a little below average game. I would enjoy more almost any other game. It's unforgivable that such monstrosity was dealt to ME franchise. I have thought that people might not like it, but me as ME fan would like it at least a bit. It's not true and don't try to convince yourself. Unless you get it for free, don't buy it - you will only damage your opinion about franchise. If you decide to play it, skip all side-quests, they are not worth it.

Apart from poor character dialogue, inconsistent character animations, an archaic and half-baked inventory management system, boring choices and consequences, uninspired new setting, and indefensible backdrop (Bioware placing their flagship title under a C team and putting all the talent in a greed-driven ploy to take on microtransaction cash via Anthem) ... this game has a serious problemApart from poor character dialogue, inconsistent character animations, an archaic and half-baked inventory management system, boring choices and consequences, uninspired new setting, and indefensible backdrop (Bioware placing their flagship title under a C team and putting all the talent in a greed-driven ploy to take on microtransaction cash via Anthem) ... this game has a serious problem with corrupting save files. I played this for twenty-two hours before I encountered finicky save files. If I load from the menu, I get stuck at the loading menu perpetually. If I try to load from autosaves sometimes, none of them will load. Now, I've run into my latest manual save corrupting.

Mass Effect 2 remains my favorite gaming experience. I replayed each of the original trilogy at least three times each. I love them so much. But I was turned away by this title's bad press for a whole year. Finally giving it a chance now, I am sorely disappointed. I keep having to convince myself to return to the last half hour or hour before the corrupted saves. I keep having to literally force myself awake during NPC dialogue and during the long drives in the Nomad between lame quest #1 and lame quest #2. I loved Dragon Age: Origins so much, but Inquisition was suuuuuch a drag with all of those soulless fetch quests and that's what we get here. Having to do the same ones again??

I might have given this a higher rating if EA hadn't declared that they're done with the title. I expect no patch. And when [read: "if"] I get to the end and discover what all the fuss is about this missing Quarian Ark?? Why would I want to do this to myself? Please do not support this developer. Zeschuk and Muzyka are gone. The days of Jade Empire and KotOR and DA:O are sooo far behind us.

I am a Bioware supporter and I am a longtime and huge fan of this series even after the way Mass Effect 3 ended. Andromeda is not a bad game, its not a good game either. The sites, the exploration and the graphics are where the goods are in this game. The characters however, are hit-and-miss as I found Jaal, PeeBee, Cora and Drack to be the most interesting per say. Liam, Vetra, and the countless members of the initiative that you run into bring little to nothing to the table outside of combat. I would almost compare Liam to a Jacob Taylor, boring to chat with but OK when it comes to Combat and it almost seems like they tried to make Vetra like Garrus but even at her best, she pales in comparison. The writing is also really bad, probably the worst in the series but to be fair this game was headed by Mac Walters, the guy who wrote the ending of Mass Effect 3 (where 150-200 hours of gameplay, choices, decisions come to fruition) in 10 minutes. The game takes almost no risk, carefully dodging anything related to Mass Effect 3's ending or Commander Shepard. Ryder does enough though his voice acting is in need of drastic improvements going forward. You get the vibe, especially with male Ryder that he isn't taking any of this seriously and its just hard to get behind him/her as a character when they don't bring much to the table. The main enemy, The Kett are the laziest attempt at a villian I've seen in a while. Its almost as if they took The Collectors from Mass Effect 2, threw in some of the Reaper traits in regards to the harvesting and made them look like weird Collector knockoffs. The game as a whole carries no weight, no feel, you don't get the sense that this could lead to something bigger when in comparison you knew that in the original Mass Effect you knew there was a bigger threat out there than the Geth and Saren. Its a hallow shell of everything that makes Mass Effect so good and so beloved. All in all, Andromeda is solid or an OK game but it serves as another example of EA's involvement with Bioware destroying the quality of these games in comparison to what Mass Effect 1-3 were. This game is an ambitious but lazy, hallow and almost soulless entry into the series. Expand

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]
