    This game is horrible.

55 hours in, and I still can't find a reason to care. The game is just so poorly written and buggy on so many different levels that it breaks the 4th wall so hard that I yell in frustration and turn the game off. What a travesty. Bioware Montreal, what the hell were you thinking? 0/10 for completely dashed hopes of a wonderful mass effect experience TWICE.

People with too high expectations from the previous series and complaints about bugs that will be ironed out. The game is solid, combat is fun, characters aren't as great as previous series but too many people are comparing the 2 separate series characters which are entirely different. This is a new series in Mass Effect, time to look at it with new eyes.

The core game-play, character skill tree, and shear size of the world make this game fun. The story isn't bad, but it definitely targets a sci-fi audience. A lot of jokes and dialogue are more technically thought out and implementation of the characters and side quests is more realistic than most RPGs. To find a worthwhile side quest you have to read through terminal logs and emails to see what the minor characters are actually thinking, and then follow their bread crumbs to start the quest.

The game is only grindy if you let it be. Pick what weapons you want to build and what kind of loadout you want, so that you don't waste any resources. The whole premise of the game is based around being short on resources and having to acquire everything you need to gain upgrades (kind of like a survival game).

I wish that it had the level of writing and facial animation as witcher 3, but I understand they may not have had the money or technical expertise on their team to do this so they played to the strengths of their dev team. The voice acting was a strong point imo, but occasionally the writing fails the characters.

9/10 would be 10/10 if it weren't for the lack of polish, and 11/10 if it had witcher 3 writing and animation.

This game should not be receiving the negativity it is getting whatsoever. One of the main complaints are character creation; is it limited? Yes,..but so were all other Mass Effect games before this one. All prior titles were extremely slim for your personal avatar creation... the amount of "Special Snowflakeness", for a lack of a better term, nowadays makes me shudder... "I can't make my character look like the WAY I WANT".. so what? Technically you are 'Ryder" and before, you were "Shepard" with an added first name of yours. In all seriousness, they should have just ditched the character creator and made people play the protagonist - unchanged.

Mind you, I am playing on a i7 w/ GTX 1080 system on PC, and I have not experienced any texture, object, or NPC popping in. Are the facial animations a little weird sometimes? Sure. But again, were they great, perfect and wonderful in the MEs before? NOPE! In fact, old ME had some extremely odd facial animations, without much emotion to it, so I don't know were people take the sentiment from that the newer facial animations, and lip-sync look worse than the previous titles.

Is the story a little flat? Sure, but it is by no means terrible as people seem to make it. Obviously it is a re-hash of everything that has been there before, and done before. Don't expect to be blown away here. But, the story is still very entertaining, especially if you take your time with it. It seems that people nowadays don't want to take things slow, and just rush-rush-rush through their games. Side-quests, logs, books, audio-journals etc... you should take your time to read, and listen. They all contribute to build this new world that is remarkably different from other ME games before.

I really enjoy the new setting & approach to combat-gameplay. If you played Dragon Age-Inquisition you can draw a lot of parallels here. Base building, scouting, resource gathering etc, sending strike-teams on missions, scan, survey and more. The worlds, environments and character models (main characters) created for this game are beautiful. Let's not forget that you have a completely different job here, .. no longer are you a N7 spectre special operative, but a pathfinder. You are an explorer. And on that note the game does everything right in my opinion.

Take the game for what it is. Try not to compare it to the older titles too much, because it IS majorly different and enjoy it for that!

Oh, and one last thing. It cracks me up how many people are complaining about the writing of the game, when they have no idea what actually goes into the scripting and story-composition to begin with. Similar to people who complain about a Movie's cinematography..., and know absolutely nothing about it... (Just a personally ticks me off)

I will say that there isn't a threat nearly as ominous as the Reapers, so you don't get the constant sense of urgency you did in the Trilogy. Overall though I believe that it's a solid entry into the series. The people complaining about this game were probably just fans of the more action oriented gameplay of 2 and 3. However, I must take points off for the terrible soft cover system. It makes taking cover tricky, and it's very easy to come out of cover in a firefight. Also Losing the ability to actually control your squad members is a bummer also. However, you can have them direct their attacks. Lastly this game glitchy. It certainly needed more time for polish.

I even grew attached to Sarah Ryder. I loved her personality and she felt very real and personable. The gameplay was also very fun and addicting. Boosting around enemies, dodging, and shooting feels amazing in this game. The combat is fast, fluid, and overall very solid. The controls feel great too. Everything is responsive and tight. Using the jet pack to climb structures and dash around is a blast. The exploration is also very fun. I love exploring the huge planets and finding enemy bases and caves. Also finding side quests on each planet makes exploration rewarding, especially since side quests award some nice experience points and other rewards. Even the side quests are mostly interesting. They add a lot of lore to the game and make you care more about the characters. Even the fetch quests and monster hunts are interesting because they usually have some story element to them that adds to the lore in some way. Some are better than others, but for once, the side quests are well worth doing, unlike in Dragon Age Inquisition. Overall this is a fantastic game, marred by technical issues. Sure the story might not be as exciting as the original trilogy, but it offers something new. This story of discovery and uncertainty is exciting in its own right. Even the villain is memorable. Throw away your ideas of what a Bioware story should be and you should enjoy all the stories in this game. Even the writing didn't bother me much. It was usually pretty snarky and at the least, entertaining. Please people give this game a chance. Even if you have to wait until the patches are out, at least try it. Expand

The overall atmosphere in the game is so good: the music, the sounds, the landscapes, the voice acting by your squad mates. It's all gravy. You'll want to keep playing. You'll want to explore.

Also, Scott Ryder's voice actor sounds like the same actor that does Nathan Drake's voice in Uncharted.

This is a good game with major flaws. Fortunately the combat and rover exploration portion of the game-play is quite good and represents the majority of the game. Everyone knows animations are hilariously bad, and I'll get to that later.

    Biggest negatives are:
    1. huge lack of music in the game, and key signature moments (say becoming a Spectre in ME1, or getting the Normandy) -- the equivalents in ME4 are very brief casual affairs with no music. This is very disappointing for me, and even the memorable space exploration music is so subdued and ambient, you have to crank the sliders to even hear it.
    2. The space exploration, while pretty, transitions take too long, aren't skipable, and there is very little of interest. Very half-baked and incomplete. Sometimes you find minerals or a derelict ship/satellite. Scanning planets is briefer than the ME2 system, only because there is literally only 0 or 1 anomalies per planet (mostly 0). Feels empty.
    3. Character/Animation system. Looks like Bioware moved from the expensive motion captured method to procedural animations. The characters are a real step back, character generation is limited. We're talking worse than Skyrim here. Eyes looks largely flat and dead, and when the lead character smiles she looks like Jack Nicholson in the Shining.
    4. Crafting, research, scanning -- it seems to be a lot of work to do everything needed to research and craft items, and by the time you are able to do so, you end up looting superior items and not needing to craft at all. Still I'm still in the first quarter of the game. Feels like crafting is to fill gaps, but the pacing feels bad and difficult in the beginning, possibly due to the overwhelming amount of choice. So I'm saving it for when I need it.

Overall the game is fun and engaging, but there are several parts of the game that feel undercooked. While animations are genuinely pretty bad, I can overlook some of that. But I'd say if Bioware is listening, music and space exploration needs more work and balancing. Maybe more planets that you can rover on.

My review was taken down for stating that the male character looks like your typical "man" of today, emasculated and queer looking. Everyone else is focusing on how ugly the women are and that does not get taken down. The real thing that they don't want you to realize and wake up from is that men should not look like the main male character from this game.

Cringey sex scenes but alright romance. Pretty much Mass Effect 1 with tighter gameplay, but released in a much more competitive market. If the masterpiece that was Witcher 3 hadn't come out, this game would probably be much higher rated.

Andromeda reminds me a lot of the original Mass Effect. It is a solid game with great ideas and promise, but it comes up a little short on some fronts. The primary difference is that Mass Effect (1) introduced us to this whole new universe, and Andromeda is just a new galaxy within that universe.

Yes, facial animations aren't great but they don't ruin the game. Game-play is incredibly fun and the new jump boost takes it to a whole new level. My biotic can now get up close and personal and quickly boost away to get back to cover before getting destroyed. Multiplayer is still great (some issues linking to single player on occasion, but not too bad). The story is decent so far, but nothing groundbreaking. However, the focus that YOU are the alien is a feeling I enjoy very much. Planetary exploring is also very fun and satisfying. Some missions can be monotonous, but there are enough options that you can change things up pretty easily.

Overall, I give this game an 8. However, the level of enjoyment I receive while playing feels like a 10. Give this game an honest chance, and try not to dwell on the bad things you may have read. Having tunnel vision on one or two flaws can make you blind to the beauty around it.

Reading through the user written reviews, the most common thing I have seen is "this doesn't feel like a Mass Effect game," followed closely by "this isn't the game Mass Effect fans have been waiting for."

I've also seen a lot of 0 and 1 scores that seem to be based on nothing but pure spite. Now being a little over 8 hours into the game, I am more convinced that a lot of the reactions are due to people building this up in their own minds.

Now granted, some of the criticisms are very legitimate. While I disagree that "these characters obviously had to leave the Milky Way because they suffer from some horrible disease that make them ugly and walk funny," I have seen more of the movement issues people are complaining about.

I've read others, though, that indicate to me that the person just didn't seem to be paying attention to the story and had their own story that they wanted to see play out. They didn't get that, so they have decided to chuck their toys out of the stroller and cry. That being said:

My Score: 6.5/10, rounded to 7

Areas where I agree with the criticism:

    1) Graphics issues: the facial expressions are a bit strange at times. They do, however, tend to elicit a chuckle at times. However, I find the complaints that they are "broken" hyperbolic.

    2) Movement: This is mainly an issue in the cut scenes, but the characters don't seem to move fluidly. It's a very mechanical way of moving about, like they are all androids playing at being human, and not doing it well.

    3) Sub-quests: After Witcher 3, it is difficult to sit through an endless loop of "fetch this widget," or "clear out this area" that has no real impact other than experience farming. A couple of them seem to have decisions that you are TOLD will have an impact, but the only impact I've seen is to the amount of experience my character has.

    4) Soundtrack: It's not bad, but it isn't good either. It is just sort of there.

    Now some areas of disagreement:

    1) Story: I think the most common criticism's boil down to "Ryder isn't Shepard." Umm... duh. In Mass Effect, Shepard was already an experienced warrior who knew who he was. Your only real influence over him was making him a paragon or rogue. Ryder is unsure of himself. He has been thrust into a position of authority even HE wonders if he actually deserves and had the fate of the entire Milky Way contingent placed upon him. As a huge fan of "coming of age" stories, I like seeing this.

    2) Dialogue wheel: I like that you are given some more nuanced options, though a bit miffed that in too many cases, it only you the "emotional" response or the "logical" response. The answers, though, fir very much in with how I perceive Ryder to be. He is a young man living under his father's shadow. So many times, you meet people that joined the expedition because of your father.

    3) Sidekicks: The obligatory "one of each type" is present. However, I like the fact that they are voiced well and aren't afraid to hint OR blatantly TELL Ryder that they disagree with him.

    4) Writing: I've seen a LOT of complaints about the writing, and I really have to disagree with this criticism. Are there some cringeworthy lines? Absolutely, especially when Ryder is trying too hard. Kind of like a kid who is TRYING to play grown up and making a mistake because he lacks experience. Which is exactly what he is. This is not ME2, with a team composed of the best of the best of the best.

***SMALL SPOILER: You learn this early in the game***

General Observation: Many of the criticisms I've seen seem to indicate that the person wasn't paying a lot of attention to the narrative playing out. Everyone in a position of power on the Nexus WAS NOT INTENDED TO DO THE JOB THEY ARE DOING. The upper command was killed either by the encounter with the scourge or during the uprising. Alex Ryder dies on the first world he explores.

EVERYONE has been thrust into a position of power for which they are not ready. They are stumbling along, trying to do they best they can. Some are obviously in over their heads, while others are rising to the challenge.

    ***END SPOILER***

Many people seem to be expecting some sort of continuation of Shepard, or for him to feature a bit more in this title. However, they seem to be forgetting that when the arks left the Milky Way Galaxy, Shepard was in the middle of the events of Mass Effect 2.

The game has me wanting to trudge on further into the story and the worlds but it in no way has me mesmerized of likes of great RPGs like the other MEs and Bethesda games.

I haven't noticed the animations issues too much, although I don't pay as much attention to those as others might and I find myself cutting the through the boring, droning dialog. One thing many of the reviews have spot on is the writing is very poor. Not sure what happened but writing is a cornerstone of any RPG and this is full of sophomoric one-liners and lacks character and story development, seriousness and sophistication. Critical people die and every one looks on as if nothing happened. The characters appear young, younger than prior installments, so maybe they are supposed to be wonder teens or something and this explains the lack of interesting dialog. But it's bad. You feel like you are missing nothing by clicking the space bar.

The characters and NPCs are god awful ugly, I mean maybe the ugliest I have ever seen rendered in a game. I don;t know if they have poor artists, bad tools, or its the political correctness gone wild that some talk about but there is nothing to look at in this game. If you are enticed by the warnings of nudity and strong sexual content look elsewhere as there is nobody here at all, male or female, that you'd want to see naked. If this is political correctness I don't know what they are trying to prove. I don't look like eye candy hollywood stars/model but I certainly like to look at them and don't feel devalued because pretty people happen to be in my video game.

I like the combat, however the first aliens you come across look like something out of Dragon Age and not a sci fi.

I never spend much time with character creation but for those that do, they really dumbed it down, it looks you get the choice of a head, that's it!

I'll re-post when I get through more of the game but have some bad feelings about it so far.

Of course, there are pluses. The fighting became interesting. But this is the only plus. But this advantage does not interest me.

But apart from that, what really saddens me is that this IS a good game, I'm actually enjoying it as much as I enjoyed the previous Mass Effects. The characters have a huge potential, their personalities are similar to the ones on the original trilogy and every one of them has their humorous winks. Combat is delicious, flawless, runs very smooth, same as performance (I'm playing it high with a 970)
From my humble point of view, the community is raging like a 5 year old that didn't get the exact same toy that he wanted for Christmas. Pretty sad. For me, this game doesn't deserve the bad reviews it's getting, those only show an immature community.

However, there are small issues with the game like bugs, glitches, but the four main issues with this game that seriously needs to be fixed. Or Mass Effect Andromeda will turn and stay from a space adventure game into a meme game.
    1. Of course, facial animations. It's no joke facial animations look like lifeless plastic characters. Most of the time these characters look dead and lack any emotion in the game at all. Also, on some occasions not only do the faces look off but, the lip synching is bad as well on occasions. It can sometimes remind me of the terrifying GTA Online character lip-synching.
    2. The romance is broken...let me explain. In this game, the romance system is divided into heterosexual, which is the opposite sex and homosexual, which is of the same sex. I'm not kidding when I say that the difference of the two when romancing a character is disturbing. For instance, most of the heterosexual scenes feature characters stripping down naked and getting the best sex scenes. However, a HUGE (not all) part of the gay romances feature kissing a couple of times, and the screen fades to black, and that's it. When I saw this, I was extremely pissed off cause I thought Bioware was LGBTQ friendly and yet they pull a stunt like this and can't show scenes of the gay or lesbian scenes without it fading to black. It's like Bioware is incompetently lazy, or they were embarrassed to do it.
    3. The writing on the game is average. But, because these characters are so plasticky and lack any emotion at all, it makes the writing even worse. On some occasions when you're talking to characters and it's supposed to be a heartfelt moment, it breaks that immersion because you can't believe it because they don't look it.
    4. This is probably one of my most offensive things I do not like about Bioware at all, and that is hiring people who put their beliefs into a game. Bioware was recently accused of making bad facial animations on females so they can be de-sexualized. Due to this, many fans of series were outraged because while Bioware created a beautiful looking male Scott Ryder, and the female Sara Ryder took a hard blow. Not only does she not resemble her face mode Jayde Rossi, but it seems a ton more women in the game look positively revolting to watch. Putting your beliefs into a game is extremely dangerous because you will end up losing a ton of customers which is exactly what happened. Not only that but apparently Bioware hired a highly white-hating racist that makes white people know he hates them; and yet he/was a designer at Bioware. Which was probably the reason Bioware's facial animation was so bad.

Other than those issues I believe Mass Effect Andromeda is an enjoyable game once it starts going. I hope and pray that the BioWare team didn't blow the chance for a sequel and will learn from their mistakes when another Mass Effect game comes. I hope there is a direct sequel to these characters because these characters need to be redeemed from the unfortunate mess up from this game.

Talking with companions and their loyalty missions have seen a good improvement. The flow of combat and power use has also been greatly improved from predecessors. Pros:

Graphics are really good given the size of this game. I do think they could have spent a little more time one the characters faces and customization options. However, once you get your ship and get out in the world the graphics really look good. I'm not sure why so many people are talking about the animations, they really not that bad.

Soundtrack: Loving the soundtrack for this game. It fits the setting and brings the mood in for this sci-fi RPG adventure.

Story: Not bad, I'm not sure why so many are hating the story. It's not that bad, in fact I think it's better than ME3. Once you go to your first planet, the story really gets better.

    Cons:

Character customization could have been better

Some of the animations could have been better as well as some of the textures.

Some voice acting moments just felt plain and lacked emotion.

Overall, I think a few patches could fix some of the game moments. I would recommend this game to anyone that liked the previous Mass Effect titles. I don't think it's as good as ME2 but I like the game so far. There are tons of content in this game for 60 dollars. It does take some time to get to it but if your looking for a game to get lost in. This is one of them.

Also, I've read some of the fellow reviewers on here and they haven't even played the game. They are just ranting. There is no way this game deserves anything less than a 5. This game has so much to offer and do, it's a shame that so many are just rating this game 0's just because.

BUT to reassure anyone who is here for the story I am enjoying it immensely. It's classic science fiction which seems to be building into one heck of a space opera kind of tale.

The character creator is just as bad as the first series, so if you want to enjoy the adventures of ugly Shepard (or in this case ugly Ryder) go make a character with it otherwise use the default. It is well crafted and suits who the characters are. This has never been a strong point of the series and not exactly the driving force behind this type of game.

The game does have bugs, yes it sure does but those will vanish with a patch or two. That's all in my opinion that drags the score down for me. Though some of these are definitely engine bugs because I remember running into similar issues in DA:I.

In the end is this game worth it? Yes!
It's easy to be a toxic reviewer and there seem to be a lot of those on here. I'd disregard anyone who uses crude and negative language without actually explaining themselves. I'd also disregard anyone who reviewed the game one day one of release because I'm 50 hours in and only 30% done the story. :)

    Performance:

This is probably the most talked about issue with the game so I'll deal with it first. It's a PROBLEM. The game suffers in many ways from technical glitches with animation, sound, quests, game crashes and more. It can look fairly decent at times but definitely not anything to be excited about. HDR implementation also seems to be a bit lacking but that's an emerging technology so i won't fault them for that. Frame rates are all over the place. Drops are frequent (on a standard PS4) and annoying.

    Gameplay

This is the most well crafted part of the game. Barring aforementioned frame drops, combat is fast and the increased mobility and verticality of jump jets makes you wonder why you couldn't do this all along. No, seriously, why couldn't you? Though the almost draconian reduction in team control has me wondering if the current developers of Mass Effect know what they are doing (yes i know it's still "Bioware", but no it's NOT the same people). Vehicle control feels adequate though I'm confounded by the lack of any offensive capabilities with the Nomad when you acquire it fairly early in the game. Many other parts though seem to be there only to frustrate the player, from unnecessary backtracking to turn in quests, just the worst inventory management, to the complete waste of time scanning the planets you can't land on are. These and many more design choices aren't player friendly and clearly don't come from an experienced team.

    Story

This is where the game takes a huge hit. Mass Effect Andromeda casts you as a Pathfinder for the Andromeda initiative. This ultimately boils down to you, once again, being the savior of everyone you know and love. Also you have a sentient AI embedded in your brain named Sam. So as Master Chief...I mean one of the Ryder twins you are tasked with finding and securing a home for hundreds of thousands of people. Which apparently involves a lot of murder, but whadaya gonna do? Unfortunately for the player much of this is told with a cringe worthy script and barely half baked ideas. Many encounters left me with the reoccurring thought "what the hell just happened??" and very much not in a good way. This is of course ignoring the stilted animations and 'please stop looking at my soul like a bon bon' eyeballs that everyone seems to have. Many have said "it gets better" I have, however, NOT found this to be the case. The further into the dull, uninteresting, me too story I've gotten the less I understand what the hell EA was thinking (aside from sheer avarice) releasing this travesty.

    Sound

It has some, except when it doesn't. Yup, if you fancy multiplayer, it may very well decide that your PS4's sound card should now **** the bed. Because it will. Frequently. Meaning no game sound, no dashboard sound and any party chat you're in will sound like it's been possessed by an underwater electric demon. 2017 folks. Welcome to EA of the future.

    Summary

Mass Effect Andromeda had tremendous potential but falls short in nearly every conceivable way. Fans and newcomers alike will be disappointed with what EA and Bioware have produced here. We have had several great titles released already this year, setting a high bar. ME:A falls far short of all of those and more importantly of itself.

I really question how people can justify anything under a 5 on this game. I understand that it may not be as good as the first installments but come on guys. This has enough of the ingredients to enjoy regardless of whether you're playing it for the first time or you're a seasoned vet. Keyboard warriors in full effect with this one.

So what's wrong with the game?It has lots of problems, but the most important is that It lacks soul and it lacks love. The things that the trilogy had and dragon origins had, while inquisition and Adromeda don't have.It feels like the games development was just a job that had to be done.

Bioware is done. It's another company now, it's just the name that's the same. The same thing applies to this game compared to the trilogy.Sad but true.

What is very good imo is that 2017 had the best start as far as gaming is conserned since many a year.Persona 5,Nioh, Nier Automata, Horizon dawn, Breath of the wild..These are rare gems. Very very strong opening for 2017, hope that this continuous, the industry was plugged by playing safe, take no risks ,no innovation,no love games like Andromeda.

Whatever great games are released though, mass effect will always remain the series that a developed the strongest emotional attachment to.

How are so many people giving this such a bad rating? I concede, the human animations and writing are sub par, but so what? The combat and gameplay are excellent, and the open world is gorgeous. And I'm sure over time people have forgotten all the flaws with the previous installments. But honestly, this game does not deserve a zero, that's absurd.

I'd be willing to bet even the people giving it zeroes actually like this game. Unfortunately people are morons, and I guess they were expecting an immortal game blessed by the tip of God's penis. Instead, because there are a couple flaws like facial animations to latch onto, trolling this game is the "cool" thing to do. Grrr EA, how dare you make a really good game and not the world's most awesomest game ever! Zeroes for you!

Long story short: Ignore the trolls. If you're on the fence, just wait for the price to drop, but I definitely think it's worth picking up at some point.

This is my first review, because I am so frustrated with this peace of **** right now... I heard somewhere that Bioware said they got influenced by Witcher 3. Well, I can't notice that anywhere in the game... I really liked ME 1-3, well written and interesting story, fun to play, played through the whole series and loved it, except ME3:s ending :)

Well, I can't notice that anywhere in the game... I really liked ME 1-3, well written and interesting story, fun to play, played through the whole series and loved it, except ME3:s ending :)

Bought ME:A on PS4. Don't know how it runs on PC but on the PS4 it's crap. As soon as combat starts it lags alot, the FPS seems to drop remarkably, this almost alone makes the game unplayable for me. It's now patch 1.06 and the animations are still terrible. Im no "gameexpert" and usually don't care so much for the graphics, but in this game it's so bad so even I notice. The lighting sucks, like one part of the characters face is bright as hell and the other is dark. I haven't finished the game but so far the story is really uninteresting and the dialogue seems to sometimes been written by a 12-year old. I don't even know if I'm able to finish this ****.

They said they were inspired by Witcher 3, what a **** lie... Well, why do they still have quests like find beacon on 5 different locations and so on like an MMO? Why have this piece of **** quests in a SP game? Who wants to run around in a SP-world and do this? Farming minerals in absurdum.

And the countless bugs! Characters that are invisible when you talk to them, you are in combat all the time on the map so you cant fast travel and talk to NPC:s.

    So to sum it up:
the story and the sidequests almost all sucks, no where near the quality in W3 they aimed for.
bad FPS (PS4) which destroys the only thing that have been improved in the game; the combat.
graphics, like the lighting and the lack of details and love in the world.
in an rpg like this you need to have good animations, as it is now it sucks so hard you get distracted.
dialogue is sometimes so bad and childish it's like a comedy, cant laugh though because I've spent 70$.
MMO-quests (as in WoW) like collect 4 spacecrapthings on a map and get some XP is totally unfun.

Maybe the combat and the graphics runs better on PC but the core of the game is still bad. You can put makeup on a pig, but it's still a pig. Though, the game is not a 1/10, some parts of the story is fine, the combatsystem and effects are ok.

Thanks alot Bioware and EA for destroying the series!

But not until, I learnt that Casey Hudson (who directed the trilogy) left the game with a few other senior staff who developed the trilogy (e.g. Preston Watamanuk- lead designer, David Falkner - lead programmer, Mac Walters- lead writer). At that time I thought, OH MY GOD, the director(s) of the new team has to be very very careful in designing Andromeda. Very likely that they will be people who are inexperienced of making AAA games or they simply cannot handle big projects like this Mass Effect reboot. They may think they can, but that doesn't mean they actually can. Most important, after 3 mass effect games, fans have built a certain expectation, high hopes if you like.

My worries have come true. Andromeda is a disappointment, especially, it is a game trying to reboot the AAA series. I am a big fan of the original mass effect series. Firstly, it is because I enjoy exploring different galaxies, meeting different species, learn about their characters, conflicts and politics. Secondly, during that 40-50 hour gameplay (per game), I could establish a deep emotional connection, pretty much, with most of the characters. I didn't reply the series, and the last time I played ME3 was more than 5 years ago but the story, the characters and, of course, the crap endings are all still pretty much in my head.

The most frustration point is Andromeda has so many potential and opportunities to be a superb, or even the best, highest ranked game ever. The fact that the game designer thought of exploring a new galaxy could mean many new species, new politics, new wars, new personalities, new characters, new conflicts. But they all are missed by the new development team!! Yes, you can explore new planets. Nevertheless, the new open world maps are big to be BIG, full of empty spaces and repeat buildings and structures and the side missions are all pretty much the same in all 4 planets. Boring and tedious, a well known problem in other RPG games. Due to poor writing, the characters are all more like passers-by, no emotions, no love, no connection. The combat is great (with super bio-power and tech), but you can't even customise your teammates! Don't even mention about facial animations, even mass effect 1 is better than Andromeda. I thought, I was playing a 15-year game but with HD resolution. The story isn't too bad actually, but the story missions are repetitive. All these issues mentioned above would have never been missed by an experienced development team. Sadly, the best talents (created the trilogy) left Bioware, left EA and it is difficult or nearly impossible to find a replacement for them. Not only they knew what they were doing and they got the experience but I admire their teamwork spirit in making the trilogy. The great Mass Effect is likely to be history without the original development team members.

I have played all 3 previous mass effect games, and have over 60 hours in MEA. Not to mention decades of gaming under my belt across every platform out there. I'm picky about what I spend my very few valuable hours on. I will very often stop playing a game if I get bored.

MEA is flawed as so many have pointed out and has a lot of small bugs that are certainly a bit disappointing. But to say they have an extreme negative impact on the overall game experience would be incorrect.

I have actually enjoyed my time in Andromeda very much and continue to go back for more. The combat and movement mechanics are a significant upgrade over the previous games and the planets are gorgeous and diverse.

The story is actually pretty engaging and is getting better. There are plenty of fetch quests, with some much more fun than others, but I enjoy the variety and the rewards are decent. I also think the quest management system and map are very well executed, so you never feel lost or unsure where to go next.

I will summarize that MEA is a very good sci-fi action-RPG in it's own right. If you are looking for the continued adventures of Shepard and Co in the Milky Way, you will not find it here. If you are looking at a fresh new adventure in the Mass Effect universe, I definitely recommend it.

Edit: I have finally completed the game and can say with full authority that this game is very very good. The story is solid in its own right and the combat mechanics are light years (pun not intended) ahead of the previous games.

This game kind of assumes you'll be familiar with them anyway in the sense that it gets you used to the combat for which it offers relatively few tutorials or other information.

That was why Mass Effect 3 was so hated by many because your choices didn't matter at the end. It was the same. It seems like that with this game. It doesn't matter how much I play, I don't feel like any choices make a difference to the story line. I always like the Paragon and Renegade system which allowed you to make choices if you was good, or bad, enough to make. Now you just give cookie cutter remarks to choices already made. Unfortunately BioWare has gone so far from what made Mass Effect 2 and amazing game and what made Mass Effect 3 good (excluding the ending), to the point that I had to give this rating. Unless BioWare goes back to these formulas that made the previous games great, I will not be coming back to BioWare. Expand

From the lack of options for character creation, to the slow moving story, this game seems very rushed. I am a very big fan of Mass Effect 1-3, but this barely compares. Not a fan, would not recommend.

Story and characters are on par with Sonic the Hedgehog fanfictions written by edgy 11-year-olds, and is dragged out horribly with mindless MMO kind of quests, which could be acceptable maybe in 2003.
Also, the game likes to **** itself and drop from 60 FPS anywhere to 10 FPS during dialogues and cutscenes with close-ups on faces.
Oh, and the best part? I can't play the game with subtitles in its spoken language due to Origin restrictions on GAME KEYS, not accounts. Apparently, if I wanted to have english subtitles available, I should've bought the game from a retailer in a country where english is native. Good to know now!
A well deserved zero. Suits who approved release of the game in this state should be fired and forever banned from working in entertainment industry.

Forget about the technical problems. The game is worse than average. Indie RPGS, action RPGS, Sci-fi _____ (insert whatever game) are better than this. Pointless dialogs, shoved in. Uninteresting characters, boring quests, boring crew, boring galaxy. The villain is a joke. Immersion: scraping paint from a rusty bucket is more immersive and fun.

Most of these 0-5 arej ust troll reviews so don't trust them. For me its a 7.5 (8 if they fix the graphics and glitches, hell I'd go further if the dlc is good) but I understand if people go down to a 6 though.

Story: So to start the review off we'll discuss the story in general, I really enjoy that sense of confusion and disarray you feel when first arriving in Andromeda, it makes the player really feel like they're stepping foot into something completely alien and not understood. then as you come to know the two new species of aliens, The Kett, and The Angara, I like the idea of the Angara referring to YOU as the aliens, it's a perspective I don't think I've ever seen in a sci-fi video game before. And that leads into the distrust the Angara feel for the player and the rest of the Initiative species, this is because of the on going conflict between the Kett and Angara. This Space Nazi versus the defenders type of narrative feels so realistic! I really love how the minor details of the Angara slowly beginning to trust and even respect you as you improve relations is shown.

Romancing and Crew Relations: So this is where some of my gripes with this game begin, I often feel like my fellow crew-mates have a lack of emotion and dialogue at times I feel they should be saying something, BioWare did an amazing job in the Shepard Trilogies of making your crew feel like real people with real personalities, but I feel like at this moment in time the characters are lacking in interactivity. The positive I have to say is that I personal choice for Romance, was me, a male Ryder and Vetra Nyx, I absolutely adore what has been done with the relationship so far, I really feel attached to her and feel like she loves me, just my only complaint is that I feel like again your romantic partner is very scripted and fake during gameplay, and at times it almost feels as if she's completely forgotten that you're in a romantic relationship. luckily I have to say that I am very eager to see what more I and Vetra have ahead of us, I'm actually hooked!

Gameplay: I was around during day one and the first week of the games release, everyone knows how every game always has a rough start with minor bugs and... oh god don't make me bring up the hideous facial expressions, but in the end it's safe for me to say that I feel like this games combat system is very fun to play with, the loot system is well designed, and the customization has a satisfying amount of options available, however I want to mention the vast majority of the armor available is god awful and looks like crap on my character. The game plays like a Mass Effect game except for the jump jets and Nomad with open world aspects, and I must say the worlds do have some sense of liveliness to them, but I do believe there is plenty of growing room to make those worlds even better!

In conclusion all of the hate on this game is seriously mind boggling to me, oh and I don't care about the Multiplayer, I have never purchased a Mass Effect for it's Multiplayer, so it won't affect my score, Mass Effect Andromeda is a great game!, and I can only see it getting better and better, roll out those DLCs BioWare, you already know I'll buy them.

The Tempest (the ship) is just as capable as the Normandy, and while your crew isn't quite as memorable as the ME3 crew, they're still pretty dang fun to hang around.

Bioware would be well advised to hire talented and experienced writers and video game voice actors in the future (their absence is felt here), but giving this game a 4 is not realistic, even if it's not as good as The Witcher 3 or even Mass Effect 3 by comparison.

Overall, this game is worth playing.

The voice-acting is pretty mediocre, especially when compare to people that did tremendous job in previous ME games such as Michael Beattie, Keith David, Seth Green, Jennifer Hale, Brandon Keener, Martin Sheen and Mark Meer.
That being said, space exploration is pretty boring, the galaxy map is a chore to navigate and the glitches and bugs that are a NO-NO for a triple A studio.

The music is uninspiring, there's no Clint Mansell, Jack Wall or even Sam Hulick, it doesn't even come close to the previous Mass Effect. One of the things i mostly liked about Mass Effect was the music, and Andromeda fails terribly at accomplishing a decent soundtrack.

Then we have generic enemies, some harbinger pimp-like trying to run the galaxy as he sees fits, but it falls flat, because instead of being scary and creepy, it's hilariously ridiculous.
At least in the previous games there was a sense of urgency, an impending doom and constant threat of death... and don't even get me started on the ending, it makes ME3 ending looks like a masterful piece of art.

Then moving on to the next topic, we have this constant and cringe-worthy sense of humour between characters, the unnecessary jokes and useless dialogues that makes the game look like a sitcom. 0 drama or tension at all.

As for the Multiplayer, it's just useless, us true ME fans couldn't care less about the MP and i get the feeling they rushed the single player campaign just to focus on the MP.

I'm truly disappointed and i'm glad i decided to step back in my pre-order and cancel it on time.
The SJW pandering and the liberal agenda is also one of the biggest problems this game has, it has been taken over by people that shoehorned personal views and political ideologies in game.

All in all, a forgettable experience and wouldn't recommend it unless it's $15 or $20 at best. Don't fall for the hype, this will never be a Mass Effect game.

It's frustrating, i wanted this game to be good, i've waited 5 years and this is what we get. I'm sad disappointed and angry at the same time.

Technically and artistically, it's a gigantic feat.

For now, the storytelling doesn't have the gravitas or the intensity of ME2 or 3, and that's the only reason why I don't give it a full score. But the premises are different: Shepard was a leader and a veteran already at the beginning of the story, while Scott is a young (man or woman), and the whole tone of the story reflects this difference. Imagine a school trip that lasts for 600 years, and takes you to a new galaxy. This was the Andromeda Initiative, for the protagonist, at the setup.

Commenters may like the game or not, but to give it a score of 0 (zero???) or even 2 or 3 means, in my opinion, not to give value and credit where it's due and I suspect at least some of it is due to hate towards Bioware and its political choices.

In reference to the animations - the alien animations looks stellar, I think there might be a little uncanny valley going on with the humans - aside from stilted animations and some glitches that have been meme'd already, it's not that bad. Similar to DA:I and other bioware games, in my opinion.

The graphics actually look very, very good - especially on PC. I recently finished DA:I and I feel like they learned their lessons in some regards with this game, I actually care about learning more about the planets I land on. I care about the side quests FAR more than I did in DA:I.

I've wanted, for 5 years now - a game that lets me explore with my Turian, Asari, Krogan and Salarian buddy's. I'm a little disappointed that they don't have Qarians out of the gate, but maybe later - or DLC. However, this game has given me what I wanted. It delivered the promise to me, anyways. Its actually FAR more similar to 1 than 2 and 3 of the original trilogy - which is welcome.

While it's not the god game of the century that people thought it would be, it's a solid entry in the series and I look forward to more adventures in this new galaxy. I would give it an honest 9/10, but because there are people on here giving is 0's for no logical reason (seriously, have you even played the game?) I will give this game a 10 from me, which I don't do very often, in fact - I rarely review games on public forums - but this game deserves my support.

While the original trilogy is my favorite game series, it lacked the ability to explore the Milky Way. Yes the story was incredible and it sucked you in. But lets be honest, while I very much enjoyed the first Mass Effect it wasn't an incredible game. The revealing of Sovereign and the truth and existence of the Reapers is the only thing from the first game that I really enjoyed. The combat and leveling system was tiring, the "exploration" of planets was boring and drab. While Mass Effect 2 & 3 developed the series into a story driven action shooter the franchise needed something new. The ability to explore planets a more was something I wanted in the first three games rather than "scanning planets" to upgrade the Normandy and find resources.

ME:Andromeda is breaking new ground. I didn't expect the critics or most gamers to love it or embrace it. Gaming culture seems to want to find the flaws and poke holes and troll everything. Lets face it, most people are looking for something to complain about. Andromeda feels like a Mass Effect game. It's new in its own way and that's exactly what I was hoping for instead of recycling the same formula over and over again like the Uncharted, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed and Halo series. All of those series lost their appeal at about the 3rd game and nothing new pulled me in and kept me wanting to come back, it was just more of the same and Mass Effect was on its way there too.

Is Andromeda a perfect game? No, none of the Mass Effect games have been perfect. The facial animations are off but compared to other new games that are receiving so much praise like Horizon: Zero Dawn I don't see much of a difference. So many times I've been running around with Aloy and it looks incredibly unnatural. The same for cut-scenes where body movements and facial expressions look off. But lets remember, they are games, graphics have come as far as they can and it's incredible when you look at games 15-20 years ago. Andromeda is beautiful, especially on my 4k TV.

The combat is new and refreshing, the R&D is new and deeper than any other Mass Effect game, the game feels huge and expansive. Something I had hoped for the original trilogy but it never lived up to. The game gives you more freedom than the previous 3 without it being so open it's aimless and pointless. There is a fine line and Bioware is looking for it, have they found it, not quite but they are getting close.

Give Andromeda a chance, have an open mind. I fully expect the next installment to improve just like ME2 did. If you go into a game expecting it to be bad, then you'll hate it. Plain and simple. If you don't like change stick to the franchises that don't take risks and just recycle everything but don't bash a game because it's not perfect and different. The market will become stagnant if no one tries anything new, and lets be honest, for the past couple of years it has started to stagnate.

Bioware has never made a horrible game. All of their games have had strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons. So has every other game ever made. Some games have engrossing stories, some have incredible action, some are beautiful but no game is perfect. Andromeda is setting up the franchise to expand and grow and it will improve just as ME2 did. I have not been disappointed after waiting 5 years for this game. I look forward to the next installment and playing this game again and again just as I've played the first 3.

Let me tackle the bad first. So that we have done that.
The character generation is a joke. Period. While they done a pretty good job at it with Dragon Age Inquisition, BioWare has completely missed it in this game. Not a single moment do you have the idea that you are playing with a character that you created all by yourself.

The character facial animations missed the mark completely. Expressions are too overdone. Take it a step back and I certainly hope that they will be toned down a little bit. It is a serious story that is being told, but it just doesn't come across like it. And if BioWare would simply update the textures of the eyes, I think the characters would look a lot less cartoony.

The setting doesn't really make sense. I still don't get why Andromeda is chosen for the new place to settle human life, while we have the whole Milky Way. Now, true, I haven't finished the game yet, who knows this is explained in the story - but right now; it sounds like overkill to populate another galaxy while there are enough planets in our own.

But to be honest, that is where I am with the 'bad'. The writing is often mentioned. Sure, the quality varies a lot, maybe more than other BioWare games. But I didn't find it so much of a problem. I don't think it is actually that bad.

It is a bit weird that after playing a strong character like Shepard for so many hours, that Ryder feels simply too much a newbie. That is a game design choice that clearly states that we are going to push this character to greatness all by ourselves, and not have a complete history dumped on us right from the beginning. I did not enjoy my character so much right from the start... but grew to like her a lot.

    The good.

I love the music. It is new, and still feels like a 90's sci-fi soundtrack in every good way.

The planet design is fantastic. There is a lot of attention to detail in the visuals here. Which makes it weird; the planets are so realistic, which makes it stand in contrast to the characters.

The game-play is pretty awesome. Sure, the interface in the menus is not that well designed as it has been done before by BioWare, but the in-game interface is great. The fighting is a real challenge, especially when the enemy is swarming you from all sides. The fighting never feels overwhelming though.

The game is big, and sure there is a lot of filler, which is exactly just that; you don't have to follow up on it. But if you are a person who wants to do everything, well, that is what you can do. Now, true, you can do filler a lot better if you just take a look at the Witcher 3 - which did a marvellous job in creating excellent filler material.
The size of the game is in no way a bad thing here. It really is about discovering new areas, and that feeling is well portrayed.
Still, if they kept it in the Milky Way, it would have made more sense.

I do have the feeling that BioWare has been force-fed the Frostbite engine, as EA has been doing with most of their studios. And I don't get why. Personally, although I do enjoy the large open-world like areas of both ME:A and DA:I - I think this type of engine would have worked better as a new IP. Not as a sequel to Dragon Age or Mass Effect.

But all in all, this is not a bad game at all, but get through the beginning - get out to your first real planet: EOS and once you have been driving around, start solving some puzzles and get a bit more story-line fed - the feeling of a real Mass Effect game starts to get to you. But until that time, yes, you will have to get used to a couple of changes. Some bad, most of them good.

But this is a game you would like to play - there is, after all - a complete galaxy to explore.

It's perhaps the biggest and most expensive to produce 7/10 game there is. After patches, that is, because before 1.06 it was unplayable. Story is slow and mediocre, combat is repetitive and kind of tedious, there's definitely too much pointless running around (Kadara and the elevator, FFS). In general it's a decent game, but it's much, much, much below expectations.

Don't let the harshness of critics stop you from giving this game a try. There are certainly some issues with graphics and bugs, as well as some weirdness with the way some characters talk, but this is still a very entertaining title.

I don't know critics are being so overly harsh about. I've been playing the game for four days now and it continues to draw my interest. I suggest you

Really have enjoyed the game. I don't understand the negativity it has received at all. People keep citing facial animations. Mass Effect has never been known for "great" animations.

I don't see this game being less than an 8.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
