    I could use many words to define Mass Effect Andromeda, but I can summarize it in: Simply Mass Effect. Thanks Bioware for coming back to become a star of a space opera.
    The animations are not good, but that can not cover that we are facing a very good game. This is Mass Effect and breathes from the first to the last moment. Perfect 10/10

    I tried to like the game but just could not stomach it. This is from a guy who played ME1, 2, & 3 multiple times. Andromeda has creepy looking faces, "even" lighting when in-doors, odd animations, and the dialog is just ... meh. After 2 days of playing I didn't "care" about any of the characters. Luckily, an EA chat agent did give me a refund. This game is a lackluster mess. Expand

    This game in a nutshell is disappointing. Everyone knows about the terrible animation. But Its also the game play that at first 3hrs is fun, quickly dulls. For a $19 game that wouldn't be a problem, but for $60? AI is terrible. Controls are Ok. Don't go in expecting the witcher 3 kind of open world. Its mostly empty spaces, with little details.

    Someone pointed out that its like dragon age but with space. Some merit to that. And that's not a positive. Game had great potential. But when you realize that the original dav team did NOT make this, but the DLC team are the ones that made it, you kinda get why this game got a 74 critic review.

    Very good and MASSIVE game.
    40 hours, 30% total progress and I'm not even bored yet.
    I've created custom male character, so I have no issues with animations.

    Not truly a Mass Effect game, but good game in ME setting. My score: solid 8/10

    let me first say, this isnt going to be a review mindlessly bashing the game, but im not going to white knight for it either. let me be frank, this game has serious issues. the pop ins, goofy facial animations, and all manner of awkward glitches occur. and if thats not enough, the character creation is just... bad. honestly worse than the 1st game... but with that being said, does thislet me first say, this isnt going to be a review mindlessly bashing the game, but im not going to white knight for it either. let me be frank, this game has serious issues. the pop ins, goofy facial animations, and all manner of awkward glitches occur. and if thats not enough, the character creation is just... bad. honestly worse than the 1st game... but with that being said, does this game deserve a user rating of 3.7? no.

    the combat in this game is addictive, and quite fun, the exploration is also enjoyable. the only way you could rate this game a 3.7 (or lower) is by completely ignoring all the good aspects, and solely focusing on the negative. is this game an 8/10? no. it has too many issues to get a high rating imo. is this game worth full price in its current state? probably not. but if a patch comes out fixing the issues that i previously mentioned, i might just change my opinion on that.

    in conclusion, the game has serious issues that are hard to ignore but the gameplay itself is enjoyable, i would say maybe give it a chance once a few patches have been released.

    (and if you were wondering yes you can definitely see that the people who made this game had a political agenda they wanted to push, but its really not as bad as some are making it out to be)

    I don't usually write reviews but I've been a mass effect fan all the way since the first one and I feel that this latest iteration of my beloved franchise deserves one.

    Firstly, Id like to get the reason I scored it extremely low out of the way. In terms of the game content and quality I'd rate Andromeda around the 4 maybe even 5 out of 10, you can see glimpses of a good game hidden here. So why the zero score? To be honest its to counteract the biased scores that hardcore fans have been giving this game. I totally understand where their coming from, no one likes people trashing on stuff they like its natural. However I hope as true fans of the series you can see that this franchise deserves so much more and that scoring Andromeda anything beyond a 6 is an exaggeration and only serves to downplay the franchise and present to people that mass effect fans have low standards.

    Bluntly put as consumers we deserved so much more then an unfinished and unpolished game riddled with bugs and technical issues (I've crashed quite a number of times) of which unfortunately is the group Andromeda is in. With that out of the way let me address the cons of this game so new comers and old fans that haven't pre-order yet can know what exactly their jumping into.

    Right of the bat you're treated to some of the most horrendous character designs and animations that make u paused and wonder if they transferred this particular part of the game creation to some shady third party. The contrast in quality between your characters and the level is striking with emotionless faces being the norm in almost every conversation, not a soothing thought when mass effect highly prides itself in conversations and character buildup. Speaking of character buildup its very weak, at least in comparison to previous mass effects. Everyone seems too willing to be your pawn and despite bioware clear attempt to introduce varied personalities, none of them brought a sense of companionship instead feeling very artificial and forced.

    Gameplay wise Andromeda gun fights are fun despite the AI occasional suicidal nature. Its clear from the start though that Bioware focused more on the shooter elements then the RPG side. The game is much more fast pace and hectic then previous iterations and this might put some old time fans off. The removal of locking you to a class is a good improvement and helps more people experience different classes as opposed to starting all over, you can also mix skills between classes.

    In conclusion, I really can't recommend this game to anyone. Sure the fights can be fun, the levels can look amazing. However the cons makes this a game worth passing. If you're a sci-fi junkie or/and mass effect fan like me, then I'd suggest you wait till bioware comes and fix the glaring issues plaguing the game. Ultimately this score reflects my opinion that a game should never be released in this state.

    What a turd. They got Wrex's name wrong, as well as Garrus's sex of all things. And you can shag the Illusive Man's daughter? Is that supposed to be a joke? Why can't you shag your sibling instead... on second thoughts it's probably best that you can't because they didn't implement putting a bag over their heads to hide their stupid ass faces.

    I really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours in now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this game without some major fixes). From funky animations, homely looking uninteresting character, to a questionable story and boring repetitive gameplay. To make matters worse, the different parts of the game don't even mesh real well with one another; it's like a whole bunch of different people worked on different parts of the game and failed to ever communicate with one another. It has left the game at launch to be one big dysfunctional mess.

    Starting out it goes wrong real quick. The default characters are certainly nothing to write home about. Male Ryder is salvageable, but Female Ryder looks plain bad. Attempting to fix it in the CC is no easy task either. You cannot modify the default faces and the pre-set CC faces are one step above abominations. One you decide upon a face, again another challenge presents itself in the form of a very (think 2002) simple CC, there aren't many options available and whatever you come up with will always resemble the pre-set face.

    The poorly implemented animations hit you almost immediately, and continue throughout. From odd facial expression to no expression at all, lifeless hands, strange walking behavior, and the biggest offender, poor lip-syncing to the dialogue, it plain out doesn't look good. It fails to suspend disbelief and for a game based on so much dialogue is difficult to get past.

    Aside from animations, graphically the game holds up no mind-blowing or spectacular, but by no means bad. The landscaping is nice and much of the game looks good enough to immerse yourself in, the problem here is the characters stick out rather badly. They are cartoonish, waxy, and in some cases downright inhumanly ugly. The aliens naturally look better, mostly because there isn't a frame of reference for exactly "how" they should look, the humans are simply ridiculous. Some of them look like they were taken strait out of The Old Republic and just had new textures slapped on them.

    Gameplay is okay at points and boring at others. The combat is familiar and largely unchanged from ME3, aside from the addition of the jet pack. The Nomad is okay to drive for about 10 minutes but quickly starts feeling more like a family van on a road trip than an APC. The lack of weapons was a terrible mistake and after awhile just getting in and out to fight things becomes a chore. The original devs dumped it for a reason, it should have stayed in the garage. The mini-games/puzzles are horrendously boring/frustrating and mining for things, we'll I'm just not going to mine (really what was wrong with the orbital probe?) Missions are at best mildly entertaining and at worst mindless tedium, too much fetch filler and pointless dead-ends.

    The story, at least to the 20ish hour mark is less than stellar. It takes a long time to get going and once it does, it feels more like the buildup to an aborted launch than an actual liftoff. It doesn't have the urgency or charm of the original series and it doesn't help that it is being played out by largely uninspired characters. The main antagonist seems more like a speed bump instead of that giant imposing stop sign that makes you take pause at what your are up against.

    The developers it seems were out to make a game of a grand scope and scale and in doing so failed to see the little things that passed right by the wide angle lens they were using to see the game with. Mass Effect was never about having vast landscapes to explore or tons of mindless things to do. It was about the story and characters, and the interaction of those two that made Mass Effect special. By attempting to make such a grand scale game they lost sight of that and ended up with a grand mess. What would have been wrong with simply making a Mass Effect game? Why try to turn it into something it is not, something that other games do so much better? Hopefully with time they can iron out and fix much of this, it's just unfortunate that they chose to go down a path that attempts to make Mass Effect just another sandbox game instead of narrative masterpiece.

    The hatred for this game is more about jumping on the "hate train", and little to do with the games own merits. You will find that the majority of negative reviews focus mainly on 3 issues; the animations, bugs and lacklustre story.

    While this instalment of the series certainly does suffer from these issues, the game is still hardly deserving of such ridiculously low scores. Especially since this game has been improved upon in many other areas. The combat, game size, graphical fidelity, sound and weapon/armour modifications, have all improved.

    But none of that seems to matter because the "faces are weird"........ so it deserves a "1". Give me a break. There are so many games released with bugs and bad animations; this game is not the first, and certainly won't be the last. And I'm not saying that this should be an acceptable practice; only that ME;A is getting crucified for it when so many other games, of the same calibre or less, get a "pass" of a 5, 6 or even higher of a rating. This should tell you that these are nothing more than "hate train" reviews.

    Yes, this game is lacking in areas, but all games do, albeit some more than others. There are even design choices they've made in the game I had wished they'd done differently. However, overall, I find it fun and engrossing, despite it's flaws and short-comings.

    In my opinion, ME;A is far from a masterpiece, but also far from a terrible game.

    I was skeptical about this game because the ending of ME3 ruined the entire trilogy. I was so disheartened that I never play ME since I finished ME3. However, Andromeda's story is even worse right in the very beginning. The game was rushed so I tempered my expectation. I actually don't mind the graphical glitches because these issues can be patched eventually. But the story is so bad that I feel torn apart, even in the first hour. I was just speechless, after the first hour of play through, after three years waiting. I don't think I will ever want to play a mass effect game again.
    This is kind of the game that should never been released. Andromeda offers nothing innovative. A mediocre game has no value of existing.

    Sadly, ME:A is objectively mediocre at best in those departments. The environmental graphics are stunning, but the characters look cartoony and out of place, especially with the terrible animations. The gameplay is decent, not perfect but not bad either. It feels a lot like ME1's gameplay but faster and more action-packed. Sadly the game has plenty of glitches and bugs, mostly of graphical nature but in general the game feels very rough around the edges. Performance-wise, the game is also rather poorly optimized. You need a beast of a machine to play this game on 'ultra' while honestly it doesn't look better than The Witcher 3 or Dragon Age: Inquisition (which both had much less extreme hardware requirements).

    If we look at the open-world exploration aspect of ME:A, there's much left to be desired there too. The world look graphically stunning, but the things to do feel like busywork and things get pretty repetitive and can sometimes feel like a grind. This is especially obvious after having played The Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild, a game that really set a new standard for open-world games and really managed to make open-world exploration fun! ME:A just falls kinda short in that aspect compared to Zelda BoTW.

    Then there's the writing, which is a bit more of a subjective thing (some people love BioWare's writing, others hate it), but even so, some of the dialogue feels objectively awkward and out of place, with sometimes rather questionable delivery. Several times I felt "wow, a real person would never say that" or "a real person would never say it that way". I have some objections with the main story too, but I won't be going into that here. I will say however that in my opinion ME:A has the worst main story in any Mass Effect game to date. The story feels like a rip-off from DA:I and not as well thought out.

It's frustrating to see the quality in the game be lost amidst the rough portions. I am really enjoying the feel of the game, the combat, the planet exploration, the codex reading, and the "talkie techie" stuff in the game. But I can't defend the poor animation choices and poor human character design, thinner plot, and rough dialogue. Thankfully for me, those issues have not persuaded me to abandon the game because they are not always present - and sometimes they actually work well. Please don't think it's all bad. Rarely is anything so black and white as that. My advice is that when the price is right for you, give it a shot and decide for yourself. You may find that the rough draft is still worth reading. thought it would be better for their reputation to ship an unfinished game.

I guess what I am getting at is that sometimes when I am playing this game it feels like a very large portion of the game was made by amateurs. The writing is hit or miss, the facial animations can look really messed up at times, and the gun play is still a little off for my liking. Overall this game kind of just feels lazily made. Expand

    I could go on and on about the flaws with this game and why these flaws matter and how Bioware/EA royally screwed the pooch here and how there is no system in this entire game that isn't without some sort of major flaw. But here's the thing. When you're actually playing the game...when you're not busy staring at a loading screen or a transition screen or rolling your eyes at the god awful animation/voice acting/writing/etc, you're liking having fun.

    And that's what's important, right? Fun? That's why we play video games? To have fun? You WILL have fun with this game. Whether it's you + 3 friends getting some coop multiplayer going or you out alone (cause your AI companions have died in the first 3 seconds of combat...again) against the hordes in single player, you will almost certainly be having a really really good time.

    In fact, you'll like be having a 7.5/10 sort of good time. If I had to compare MEA to another game, I'd compare it to Fallout 4. It was horribly disappointing for a lot of the diehard fans, there were a LOT of serious problems, but, at the end of the day, it was still a fun game worth the purchase.

    So if it's a 7.5/10 sort of game, why am I giving it a 4/10? Why am I writing a negative review? Well, two reasons. The first is that, despite their response since launch (which has been quite good), Bioware and EA behaved AWFULLY before launch. Some of the devs behind this game have acted in a way that would have gotten others in their field fired in a heartbeat. Truly awful behavior and truly reprehensible actions towards their paying customers and long time fan base.

    But more importantly, the second reason is that there is a sizable group of Bioware fans that absolutely will not hear ANY criticism of this game or Bioware as a company no matter how legit or reasonable said criticism is. Even the slightest break from the hive mind of "Perfect game 11/10!" is met with hate and scorn. It's **** disgusting. These people give gamers in general a bad name and they are 100% responsible for the state of the industry and **** like MEA. They are the reason this game is so subpar, because EA/Bioware knew they could farm out the fourth game in their biggest franchise to some B team that's never produced a full game before and no matter what quality the game ended up being, there would be enough of this type of fan to lap it up and defend the game regardless of criticism that it'd be a success.

    So yeah, 7.5/10 if you're JUST looking at the gameplay. 4/10 when you look at the bigger picture, everything included.

    Decent, if generic, sci-fi shooter wrapped in a creepy Mass Effect skin.

    This is the game where EA decided to cash out on the Mass Effect brand by shoveling out the bare minimum they thought they could get away with. Mass Effect has unquestionably lost its standing as a top echelon franchise.

    Not amazing, not bad. Somewhere in the 'meh its okay' range. Faces and animations are a little off but the overall size and variety of the universe and gameplay mechanics give a good gameplay experience overall. As long as you can look past weird facial expressions you can enjoy it.

    Sure, there are some graphical flat faces and I have even seen an NPC in T-pose but these are so minor that giving it a bad name for it doesn't make sense. There are instead other issues that should be handled first but let's talk about these later.

    The story starts out interesting enough. A bit weird and unprofessional I would say, but what it lacks there it certainly makes up for in its continuation. I will not spoil anything but let us just say the more I play the more I want to continue. Voice acting is okay. Some characters better than others. The amount of content is huuuge. I normally plays very thoroughly but I have the sensation that my life is not long enough to get stuck exploring in this game.

    The improvements that should be focused on instead of facial animations is the lag some players experience in multiplayer and the connection issues that has popped up. It seems to be a rather demanding game on that front. The UI could be improved as there are no scroll indicators in the menu (which made me confused where they had put the subtitle toggle) and some other minor things making the menus and UI systems somewhat non-intuitive and confusing.

    Apart from these I have yet to find what the fuss is about. It is a great game in a neat package with loads of content for the Mass Effect-fan who wants to explore a vast universe. Read the codex to get the true depth of it all (maybe not ALL of it because it feels longer than the Song of Fire and Ice series). They really made an effort on placing this in the timeline and a good story.

When it comes to sci-fi I'm not particularly fond of the dark and bleak atmosphere of those those game. Mass Effect Andromeda seems to go in the opposite direction.

    The story is one of optimism and discovery rather than extinction and doom. Even the interiors of ships are different. Where the Normandy was all black and orange, the ships in Andromeda are white and blue giving them a clean and sleek sci-fi look, which I like. I personally found the story and most dialogue to be interesting despite a few moments of incredibly bad writing. These moments are cringe-worthy to be sure, but when it shines, it shines brightly.

    Unlike most Bioware games, the combat is definitely the best part of this game, and this is from someone who doesn't really like shooters. There are a lot of ways to customize your character's combat abilities and you can change up your roles so if you find you don't like one role, you don't have to worry about starting a new character to try out another. The combat is fast and fun and allows you to mix in gun play, melee, and biotics (space magic) to sow chaos across the battlefield and make your enemies cry like babies. This is somewhat surprising considering the lead combat designer is a massive white-hating racist. I guess talent and being a decent person do not need to go together.

    The environments are also quite beautiful and diverse ranging from jungles to deserts to icy snow-covered tundras. Tearing across them in my not-Mako was pretty fun, though it quickly becomes clear that they are really just empty albeit beautiful set pieces.

    The game does have a number of issues that have been pointed out by many others. The character animations are often awkward and janky, which is par for the coarse from a Bioware game. The facial animations are where the most laughs will come from. Some range from robotic to downright bizarre, but always gave me a good chuckle. Many may find this immersion breaking, but I've always been able to compartmentalize these sorts of things from my immersion, so it wasn't really an issue for me. Luckily, I have not encountered any game breaking bugs during my play-through.

    The side-quest structure is also nothing to write home about, with them often resembling MMO fetch quests. Fortunately, while not very interesting, these quests do give at least a sense of progression toward the goal of colonizing the galaxy.

    All in all, the game speaks more of what could have been. It's wasted potential is glaringly obvious even to those who never played the original trilogy. The game ultimately feels rushed and it is apparent that Bioware did not hire the best to work on this game, settling on the merely average. The Mass Effect legacy deserves better than this as do its fans. It is merely an average game that objectively deserves a 5/10 but I gave it a 6 simply because of the personal enjoyment I squeezed out of it. Perhaps next time, Bioware will focus on hiring and retaining the best people for the job rather then hiring to meet diversity quotas. After all, diversity for diversity's sake does not a good game make.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Should have called it Mess Defect: Gays in Space.

    The Good:

    - The combat is fairly decent and should have been the core of the game instead of travel cutscene simulator.
    - Space Sudoku - fun diversion, should have been used more.
    - Overarching story idea and intricacy - the actual idea of the story is fairly decent, and quests branching off gives the illusion of a less linear game.

    The Bad:

    - Pretty much everything else
    - Particularly the character writing that has been clearly pieced together by a social justice whining millennial.

    The Ugly:

    - All female characters who have more than 2 lines.
    - There are significant animation problems, but they are a lesser concern when placed next to bigger problems such as the pathetic writing, and terrible game design decisions.
    - Female Ryder is particularly shambolic, do yourself a favour and play as Male Ryder, who is generally alright.

    Expect to spend your time in this game as follows:

    25% - tabbed out reading websites while the game plods through travel cutscenes as a result of the most abhorrent game design decision this side of the year 2000.
    10% - spamming spacebar to bypass as much of the torrid writing as quickly as possible.
    5% - right clicking things then left clicking them while in space
    5% - jumping on stuff and pressing buttons
    5% - combat
    10% - driving around in your car and ignoring anything that isnt a forward station or a quest marker as it is irrelevant.
    5% - navigating the worst UI/Menu system known to mankind.
    1% - playing Space Sudoku
    4% - Being forced to unnecessarily run from area to area to hand in quests.
    10% - running around speaking to NPCs over and over as the quest marker system is broken and it is the only way to be sure you have picked everything up/handed it in.
    5% - opening terminals and either pressing spacebar or marking everything as read.
    10% - Scanning things
    0% - Pursuing romance options as the characters are either all gay or have been hit repeatedly by the fugly stick.
    5% - trying to work out how to create a white custom character, realising that you actually cant, and then giving up and using one of the defaults.

    In Bioware games, your team are always an important feature, as well as what they wish to do with their private parts, here is who you get to carry through the course of the game on your ship:

    "Active" Team (the characters who go on missions)

    - SAM - Asexual disembodied robot who lives in your head.
    - Peebee - chubby bisexual Asari with the mental acuity and behaviour of a petulant teenager.
    - Cora - Human female biotic, has a lesbian haircut but appears to be straight. Behaves like a 16 year old girl who likes to pretend they are grown up.
    - Liam - Straight guy (but here's the twist, hes black, because gotta have the minority factor). Likes to make stupid decisions and is all about morale.
    - Jaal - Beta male pink vagina shaped space alien who is all about the feels, is straight despite his favourite colour.
    - Drack - Krogan who doesnt give a damn about much of anything as far as I can tell.
    - Vetra - Female bisexual Garrus, except only about 10% as interesting/entertaining.

    "Inactive" Team (they live on your ship)

    - Suvi - Lesbian Religious Scottish Scientist/Navigator/Something - Kallo - Straight male Salarian pilot, he gets the least lines and involvement in the story. - Lexi - Asari doctor, spurns your advances due to not being fugly. Bisexual - Gil - Chief engineer and king of the gays. In summary - do yourself a favour and don't inflict this game on yourself, unless you are into staring at your computer while nothing happens, or pursuing badly written gay imaginary space aliens.

Time to move on! If you want a repeat of ME1-3, play the old game and don't destroy a perfectly good game because you didn't get "The Return of the Shepard".

    Is the game perfect? No, of course not. An ever more demanding audience will obviously point at some bugs and glitches. Is it game breaking? No. Also, Bioware has been quick to bring some patches so kudos to them for that.

    The story: I like it. It is space exploration. You are the alien in another galaxy so can't just go gun-ho on every one. The squad team is nice and even if I have my favourites, I don't have any that I'd want to throw in the airlock. Some people try to compare a story developed over three games vs one and to point the obvious: it is a different story, different characters, different feel so stop comparing and enjoy for what it is: a nice game that doesn't try to take itself too seriously.

    The combat system is great: you have a lot of skills to chose from and even if you can develop your favourite build, you are not tied to it and can develop more skills to try something different or even completely respec. Combat is also very fluid and really comes to life in the multiplayer. I have spent many hours on the mp with three friends and still not getting bored because we can swap characters (and their skills) to fight differently.

    I'm certainly happy with my purchase. I don't pretend to say it's a perfect game but it gives hours of entertainment and replayability.

Apparently, I was wrong. Andromeda is a terrible game that falls flat in almost all areas. One of these would be the story. One of the biggest praises I see about the original trilogy is that it the games have incredible stories, while Andromeda's feels like it was thrown together last minute. None of the characters managed to interest me for extended periods of time, and most of them were really generic, bland, lifeless beings with nothing special about them. This is especially conveyed through the game's facial animations, that I won't talk about because you don't need me to tell you about it. It also didn't help that the characters were voiced by some of the most talentless people in the industry, not including Natalie Dormer and Kumail Nanjiani. However, a lot of games have been able to push aside a flawed story with incredible gameplay. So has Andromeda done that? Well, no, not really. The combat is extremely dull and not very fleshed out, and fighting the same enemies over and over again didn't make it better. Also, for some reason, BioWare decided that it would be a glorious idea to make the game open world. This didn't help the game, either, and actually hurt it in some aspects. For starters, the poor world design, in terms of structure and layout or the map, was repeated constantly on every planet I came across. I barely saw a change in an overall world, and the fact that the maps were very limited in where you could go when the game was advertised to be all about the freedom of the player really crippled my experience with the game. Traversing this travesty of a game map is also a pain in the ass, as the Nomad can barely go up a slightly steep hill without you having to switch into 6 wheel mode, and the customisation is way too limited and unimagined. But enough about the main game, let's discuss the multiplayer. It's not good. On a technical level, I'd compare it to Assassin's Creed Unity levels of functionality. Matchmaking is almost instantaneous, but there are constant song bugs and frame drops that seemed to happen every match, at least in my experience. In addition to that, there's only two game modes, neither of which are worth your time. Also, because it's published by EA, the multiplayer is loaded with microtransactions. The only good thing I could say about this game is that the customisation in the single player, in terms of armour and weapons, is pretty spot on, but nothing else besides that. In conclusion, Mass Effect Andromeda is the most boring, monotonous and overall awful AAA game I've played since The Division. Please don't buy this game, and please, BioWare, stop trying to be SJWs and make an enjoyable game. Expand

Mass Effect Andromeda is a massively ambitious game that doesn’t hit every mark it tries to and there are some truly baffling and terrible design decisions but it is in no way even half as bad as some have claimed.

    Unfortunately the very first step of the game is also one of the most disappointing. There really is no excuse here. 5 or 6 years development time and we have been given a truly awful character creator. It is massively limited by not allowing the player to actually create a face like Fallout 4 does for example, but simply provides around 10 increasingly terrible looking presets for the player to choose which they can then only change some dimensions and positions on. For a game considered to have strong RPG elements this is of course very damaging. What is a welcome idea is that the player is able to edit their characters sibling as well to dictate their in game appearance which in turn, generates what their father, the original Ryder looks like. But of course, this good idea is also stifled by the hugely simplistic creator.

    Not long after this crushing disappointment and confusion as to how any dev could actually sign off on this creator and believe it is ok, the game opens very well in my opinion. In a throwback to the original ME, the player has a brief intro to their situation in deep space and are then quickly thrust onto a planet which turns out to be very hostile. This introduces the player to the much improved and enjoyable combat system, one of the squad mates and a taste of the, pretty stunning environments the player can expect from the rest of the game.

    After that the game properly opens up and really does get better and better as you go through it. As I have mentioned the planets and environments are beautiful but unfortunately are not matched by the character models with human characters in particular being very disappointing and lacking in detail. Out of the many negative claims about the game prior to release, the dead eyes of human characters is one that was very true, a real shame given that some of the alien characters look great.

    This, regrettably, brings me onto one of the worst, most bizarre design decisions/omissions I have ever seen. So whilst the crafting system is decent, essentially you are only ever crafting gear for yourself as Bioware has taken the very strange decision not to allow players to gear squad mates AT ALL. Quite unbelievable that a game in any series can regress this far considering it was something that you could do in the original ME. Yes they also strangely limited choices in the follow up OT games but now there is nothing at all. Not allowing the equipping of squad mates is just baffling, and it is hard to see any reasoning behind a decision to limit the player in this way. Personally I had hoped not only to be able to equip them, but to be actually able to edit them in game as well, so my disappointment was confounded by having no options whatsoever here.

    In a lot of ways it’s like the devs seem to have assumed that any sort of micromanagement, whether regarding squad mates or planets, is a bad thing. I would wholeheartedly disagree with that and would take some micromanagement over what we have been given. For a game such as MEA it adds control and diverse experiences for each player.

    However unlikely, I hope that some of the most glaring issues are somehow fixed or enhanced with future patches. For now all the issues in the game do unfortunately pull it down from being great but happily not quite to the point of completely ruining it.

    It’s much closer than I would have liked but I think the good points just about outweighing the bad. I understand why many have been left disappointed as expectations were very high. I am in the same boat and have been left disappointed and frustrated at many aspects of the game. However focusing on the strong points of MEA has allowed me to enjoy my time with it a lot, and with aforementioned future fixes/enhancements I hope for, along with some sizeable DLC, MEA could still be great. For now, it is a solid 7/10.

Combat is fast and fluid (though I do miss being able to use ALL of my powers and specify what each AI should do), exploration is streamlined and multiplayer is still a blast (but dang the loot system is incredibly sparse with upgrades). The Loyalty Missions were all the best stories in the games and some I would argue were essential to feeling an attachment to the main narrative at all. Progression with Profiles and the Nexus were welcome additions and kept me interested and involved. Relationships were dumbed down too far and easier to intentionally get right or wrong. Multiple trophies were bugged and some ridiculous checkpoints made for just a couple frustrations, but overall this game was fun to just play. Expand

    MEA, which I just spend a massive 78 hours in (about as long as the three other titles put together) definitely has it's flaws. Rather than drag out a wordy review, I just thought I'd list the pros and cons:

    CONS
    - still a bit buggy, despite multiple patches.
    - some of the narrative skips a bit - I found myself thinking I must have missed something
    - there's not the gravity of the first games - and allthough I played for a long time, there didn't seem to be the same connection to the NPCs
    - it could get a little repetitive in some ways - some of the smaller missions were a little underwhelming.
    PROS
    - massive improvement with the patches- why couldn't they have put it out like version 1.10?
    - characters do grow on you, and some that I thought I would find annoying were actually my favourites.
    - some of the stories (esp some of the side missions) are absolutely classic ME. Funny, tense, spectacular.
    - the main story does build to something pretty impressive by the end.
    - the planets look amazing.
    - the combat is far and away better than any of the other games.

    Anyway, I'm glad I played it now. I'm a bit diisappointed there won't be more to explore now the DLC has been cancelled.

    To put it bluntly, Andromeda is not interesting and is extremely shallow. This is a shell of a game built around exploration with the occasional Mass Effect reference dropped in just so they can make the gamebox worthy of the Mass Effect name. Everything about this game screams that it was rushed, it is very poorly designed, lack of engaging narrative, removal of key elements from previous titles, make this game a huge chore. I would rather do laundry for 8 hours a day every day of the year than play this game. This game is not an RPG, you'd expect 5 years of development would have expanded on the great things from the original series, but no, they really set themselves back.

    Exploring planets: Interesting with the first planet, extremely repetitive after that. Driving is great as long as it has a purpose, but there is no purpose. Unfortunately, there is little variation to each planet when you break it down. Each planet is filled with the same boring enemy, same boring geometry, same boring fetch quests, all of which have no real direction. Don't bother with outposts, skip it, like 90% of the content.

    Quests: Side quests are a joke, literally every quest is a go here, now go there, now drive back there, scan this and now go drive back to the original spot. Toss in the fact that some side quests have you do that across multiple planets, you will want to shoot yourself after the 20th side quest. Quest tracking is also terrible, lack of way-points for some, and the way the quest journal has been organized is a slap in the face to modern RPGs. Your reward for side-quests, some dialogue that is skippable and experience points. The side quests lack any real weight or even story, they were tossed into the game because the designers felt they needed to fill these planets with time consuming tasks, thinking that bigger meant better. It doesn't. Loyalty missions are a joke, making the player travel from planet to planet scanning objects is a terrible way to introduce interesting story elements. Skip them.

    Main Story: Is there a main story? The Kett are boring to say the least and the Remnant are a complete after thought. The narrative pacing is so slow you often forget what is happening and end up not caring because you are too focused on clearing one of the many side tasks you have. There are a few cool cutscenes, but that is it. The main story clocks in around 15 - 17 hours.

    Remnant: Architecture is cool, the vaults are great, but nothing is ever really fleshed out. Locations marked on your map are only marked because there is a container with some goods, literally no other value.

    Multiplayer is garbage.

    Research/Development would have been cool if it wasn't so messy, how many options do we need for the same gun. Seriously, customization is cool. but Jesus, do I really need to research the same weapon five times? I stopped caring about research after the first 20 hours.

    Dialogue is pointless and unrewarding, no paragon/renegade system make conversation dull. Your decisions hold no real consequences. Relationships are very generic, listening to conversation is like watching a sloth run a marathon. Skip most of it.

    Combat is ok, the jump pack is cool, but the big open environments hurt more than help. Mass Effect made it's name on close combat interior fights, with cover, all that is gone. Whatever you loved about combat was taken out, the power wheel. squad control, etc.

    Character design and animation is very bad. Alien design is abysmal and lacks any real depth.

    It's not good and doesn't deserve to share the Mass Effect name. Honestly, no game should make me want to go back and play something that is 5 years older. Go looks at videos of ME3 and tell me that it doesn't look like it blows Anrdomeda out of the water.

    I'd type more, but my soul died a little playing this game and I do not want to relive any of those moments.

    Mass Effect Andromeda is yet another game released in the recent months that made me question myself if my playing computer games is actually a form of the Stockholm Syndrome, a sentiment from the past I cling to, without any actual joy.

    I won't even start with the technical issues, everyone knows what went wrong here. But go past the uninteresting premise, the lackluster protagonist and their equally bland companions, ignore the writing on the level of a medicore fanfiction and the wasted potential of the story which goes nowhere near to the original trilogy - basically take no heed in any Bioware staples, and you will have a game which seems like something experimental that was released before (yes, before) an already not-so-perfect Dragon Age Inquisition, which so desperately wants to be a very typical free-to-play MMO with no multiplayer option, full of dull fetch quests, vast and empty spaces and absolutely no reason to play beyond the 21-hour final mission mark.

    I have absolutely no idea what happened here (save for the multi-corporation mess which seem to gradually strangle every good franchise as soon as it gets a few dollars above a certain threshold), but what suprises me the most are the user reviews giving this mess of a product a score higher than 7. I just can't understand this, understanding as I usually am. By doing this we, players, give the gamedevs premission to continue producing worse and worse games. Please. Stop.

    (My score is a bit higher than it should be due to the multiplayer matches, which are the only aspect of this game which is not broken. If you don't care about the multiplayer, feel free to substract 2 points from the score.)

    I will be honest, i wasn't a fan of the side quests. I gave up on the game when i reached the second planet and had to fetch lost cargo from a crashed ship. I expected to run over grab it and return it but upon opening the mini map a was presented with around 10 parts that i needed to find. This is the worst kind of padding in video games. Its just mind numbing filler content that feels odd when you are in a race against time to find a new home for the human race. But that's a problem that features in 90% of games now days.

    Gripes aside though, everything else is very mass effect. Talk to Party members in between missions to find out more of there past. Maybe romance one of them if it takes your fancy. hand quests in at the new version of the citadel. Its a fine game, its just a bit ...... Samey.

    I got a fair bit of enjoyment out of the multiplayer though. Weirdly, i think this is the strongest part of the game ( being the part i enjoyed most )

    If you are in the mood for a space opera, pick it up. its a perfectly serviceable game. However, if you want a game in which to develop meaningful relationships with your party and explore broad themes in the main plot then i suggest you pick up the infinitely superior Persona 5.

    Story wise, it's pretty weak, with every battle encounter being exactly the same no matter what you're fighting. It feels like Destiny in that regard, and it's sad when ME1 felt more diverse than Andromeda's fights. The story also has an extremely lazy way of avoiding all the choices you make in ME3. I mean literally your choices in ME3 matter more than they do in this game.

    The singular alien race we meet in Andromeda acts and behaves almost exactly like humans. Almost every single character is actually hideous to look at from dumb braided shaved hair to fish lips (in a sad attempt at political correctness maybe? I'm not sure, even the Asari are ugly) to the point where the female Turian was the only creature I wanted to romance, and every Turian looks exactly the same. There are some interesting characters but none have nearly the attachment you immediately gain to any of the people in the original games, which hopefully means future Mass Effect games (if any) avoid the people who wrote this game at all costs.

    Other stupid decisions like no true open world, Assassin's Creed style collectibles (can we stop doing this and naming it open world?), literal Windows Explorer style folder menus, obvious catering to consoles when playing on PC, difficulty being completely trivial after you get Version 3 of any weapon or armor, and just a load of other minor "did they even play this game" annoyances that add up to a frustrating experience. ME3 was unbelievably smooth for a third person game, but Andromeda decided to take 50 steps backwards in usability and not getting stuck on invisible rocks. They also somehow managed to make a vehicle worse than the Mako. I know BIoware is capable of great things, but Andromeda is basically another Dragon Age 2.

    Even after the patch, the game doesn't feel different. I didn't care about the bad animations, I didn't care about a lot of the graphical issues, ME1 has all of those but everything else still makes it a great game. Unfortunately the only thing that would make this game good is pretending it never happened.

    Andromeda has most of what you've come to expect from previous ME games: great overall story about humankind exploring the universe and new worlds; meeting and learning about new aliens all with the conflict you'd expect of different cultures with different aspirations; deep dives into the lives of your teammates, their backgrounds, challenges and how they've come to be who and where they are at the time of this story; & actual fun gameplay action that's better than the original trilogy. This game is enjoyable & better than most similar games.

    DON'T let online trolls that trashed the game before patches ruin it for you by not giving this a go yourself. And even before the fixes, the story & action surpassed the bugs that superficial users let influence their reviews. The original ME trilogy set a high standard to live up to. Is this game Mass Effect 2, the platinum standard model of games of these genres? No, but it's arguably close because some areas are better (seamless combat controls) while yes, some other areas come up short (like 99% of other games you'd compare to ME2). Andromeda 2 could have a shot at equaling ME2. Here's hoping EA make the sequel because there's a lot of fans out there very much looking forward to more from this series in the future.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I used to be a bioware fan but probably not anymore after I bought Andromeda. I played every game they produced, but characters are just simply getting more and more ugly. I don't understand why but I can't bear play any ugly characters especially the female ones. I didn't throw away this game disc because I was hoping one day they will beautify the issue but it seems they don't, so bye bye Andromeda and I wouldn't buy any bioware games before I see the characters in the future. But when I forced myself to ignore this things everything changed. I realaized that Andromeda plot is really good idea, and actually it is super beautiful, actually Andromeda is what I expected from No Man's Sky - amazing bright space exploration. Planets are really lovely, graphics and art direction is top (except face animation), characters are not comparable to ME1-2, but there're some fun to, especially Drack is very interesting - from his main story to his comments through the game. And during completing the main quest I realized that the plot is pretty OK, many questins, but the one who wrote it definitely knows the game and loves what his doing. This game is more like an introduction to the new galaxy, not super rich story. And again - it is super beautiful space exploration. Also in the end of the game I really loved the combat system, it's really god after you try to understand it. Actually EA release tehre new title Anthem especially on the Andromeda combat system.
    PS. Of course it's not comparable to the ME1-2, but they really did a great job, stop trying compare this games, just replay entire trilogy if you want "old good ME" :)

The one redeeming feature is the world art (not the level design); the art team have done a reasonably good job of making pretty vistas. Everything else, however, is extremely disappointing. It's very sad to see Bioware fall as far as it has. The signs of this company going in the wrong direction have been apparent since Dragon Age: Origins, but as a long time fan this is the nail in the coffin.

    Either Bioware needs to seriously reconsider who it's employing and why, or they're heading the way of previous studios who have been consumed by Electronic Arts. Rest in peace, Bioware. Say 'Hi' to Bullfrog, Maxis, Westwood, Dreamworks Interactive, Phenomic, Blackbox and Pandemic for me.

Ever since the ending of ME3 turned half of the community into alt-right extremists, it seems a lot of gamers are simply programmed to believe Bioware can do nothing right. My favorite complaint is people calling Mass Effect Andromeda a spacefaring Dragon Age Inquisition, intending it as an insult, but seeming to forget that DAI won game of the year in 2014. Several of the user reviews appear to be written by people who didn't even play the game, as they reference "issues" I don't recognize from this game at all. A zero score? Really? "This is not a Mass Effect game"? Please!

    This isn't surprising. All over the internet for months, if not years, I've seen hundreds of people swearing they'll never buy a Bioware game again, or prejudging Andromeda, etc. etc. In short, there appeared to be a lot of people who couldn't wait for the game to come out just so they could take a big dump all over it, without ever giving it a fair chance. Reading these comments here, the vitriol is so palpable that it's clear many writers are basing their reviews on pure politics and knee-jerk hating. Everyone is free to voice their opinions, of course, but let's stick with honest opinions that are formed on the actual qualities of the game, and leave our prejudices to the side.

    For my part, I'm about 30 or so hours into the game and really enjoying it. There are some frustrations. The user interface is not as intuitive as the previous trilogy and the game is complicated. Comparisons with some aspects of MMOs are not out of line. However, so far it all makes the universe seem wonderfully expansive and real. All those planets in the first Mass Effect game that I wanted to land on and drive around on and explore, but couldn't? Now I can. All the Cerberus and merc bases that looked the same? There's huge variety here. This game actually fleshes those planets out.

    One thing about another game I loved, Witcher 3, is that it could be quite dark. When Geralt encountered desparate people, they were truly desperate. The game was dark. Bioware games are generally more optimistic. Even if you played a pure renegade Shepard, there was always a certain humor and light to things. I wouldn't mind more darkness. I think I've only touched the surface of Andromeda so far, so perhaps I'll see hints of it, but knowing Bioware, I doubt it. Darkness in a story makes the lightness seem so much brighter (a big reason most fans love the Citadel DLC so much).

    But dark or not, the story so far is engaging and there are so many characters, so many quests, that I feel like I'm going to be living in Andromeda a long time. For me, that's a good thing. And I like how the multiplayer ties in with the single player.

    The complaints about the facial animations...look, it's the Frostbite engine, the same engine that was used in Dragon Age Inquisition. DAI had the same facial animations, the same character movements, etc. It's good and bad. But let's face it: the Mass Effect games were NEVER cutting edge in terms of gameplay, graphics, or anything technical. Bioware creates worlds that you want to spend time in. They feel real. Mass Effect Andromeda is that in spades. And the voice acting more than makes up for the occasionally odd facial animation, most of which are perfectly fine.

    As for the "fetch quests," most of these missions are of the same quality as the side quests in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which justifiably won Game of the Year in 2015. Witcher 3 is similarly huge. It's true that some of Andromeda's missions are a bit tedious (scan X number of these, etc.), but so were many of Witcher 3's missions. Also true of both games? Much of that is simply not required for anyone who just wants to focus on the main story. If you're a completionist and still hating it, then you should not have been interested in these games. After all, Bioware has been saying for months that Andromeda is the biggest game they've created yet.

    As some have said, really this game takes us back to the first Mass Effect. It's hard to scale back from Reapers and Shepard, I know, but I think it's off to a fabulous start and I can't wait to see more.

After playing a lot of Mass Effect Andromeda I can safely judge the game. Although I did enjoy the combat, the story, and loot system, and many of the missions- there are flaws I should point out.

    The good
    - Story is decent
    - Characters could be A LOT worse
    - Combat is AWESOME, by the far the best in the series
    - Open worlds look great and are a lot of fun to play around in
    - The game sometime shows great mass effect moments
    - Loving the loot system

    The bad
    - The series lore has greatly suffered
    - Characters are far cry from the original games
    - Antagonist sucks
    - Open world design kills any chance of a really strong story
    - So many bugs and glitches

    1. The lore: I love the lore of Mass Effect- it is what made the original games so special. The multiple species and cultures, the myriad of political issues- and how you fit in to it all really sold the experience. ME.A lacks that great lore present in the older games. Much of the lore is just thrown out! For instance- the first Korgan you meet (the highest ranking Krogan on the "nexus") is female. Anyone who knows about the Krogan knows that they are way overprotective of their woman and thus you only ever see one, it's their culture. And that is thrown to the wind here. That's not the worst though, The worst part is everything is gone- no more hanar, quarians, geth, drell or otherwise. Instead we get the 3 council races, humans, krogans, and 2 boring new species. So while all the "important" species are there all the little extra lore bit are just gone forever. This all leads to the game feeling less grand and expansive than it should.

    2. The animations- I think they are actually worse than in ME.3 and that's saying something.

    3. Glitches and bugs- the world is half baked at best. I've never seen such an unfinished game.

    4. The story- Although I like the story it is still a pale comparison to the originals. The originals were often not open world at all or only had some slight open world features. This allowed Bioware to focus on writing and story and it paid off for them. In the orig games you got tight, exciting, and well crafted missions- Here you get the classic main story wall of "I don't trust you until you do 5 fetch quests" and then you get a a good well crafted mission. Even though the open world is great to look at and fun to play in- it all comes at the cost of a strong story. Personally I would rather have a great story than big open worlds.

    5: Characters: None of the characters are bad, but none are great either. There is no Garrus, Tali, or Wrex level characters here. Everyone is passable and somewhat interesting- but they lack originality and diversity. Don't get me wrong they have TONS physical and sexual diversity (I get it Bioware) but no diversity in personality types.

    6. The setting: I think Andromeda could have been a great setting but they don't use it at all so it isn't. They added and ENTIRE galaxy to the lore but only add 2 species? No political drama, no crazy new tech, no great new lore, or big huge choices- nope just 1 bad guy species and 1 good guy species and the two are at war and that is it. I would have rather seen them stay in the milky way and continue to story past 3, or even do a prequel. At least with the milky way we get the established lore we all love.

    Conclusion: It is clear what bioware did here. They focused their efforts on a big and breathe taking open world, and great combat at the expense of story telling, good mission design, and great lore. Mass Effect never had the best combat or great big open worlds- it had a great story, great characters, and awesome lore. Bioware has taken what was once weak and risen it up to greatness while letting what was already great wither and die. I hope this isn't the end for Mass Effect but I am guessing it will be. A sad day for gaming

    I really enjoy playing ME:A and still do. I'm gonna be honest with you guys, I haven't finished the game yet, yea ikr. But I got a kid, I can't play more than a few hours a day. The dialouge and animations are retardet, I'm not dissagreeing with you guys, but it's not worth calling the game unplayable and throwing the game out the window because of that. The story is great so far, it's mysteries and I constantly wanna know what comes next.

    There's a lot to take in when you jump into the game. There's a lot of story and new things you have to try to understand. But you catch on quick. The combat is fun and there's manay options to choose from when choosing your prefered combat style.

Sure, the animations are sometimes cringy and we all know the "My face is tired" line, but what's with all the hate y'all? Female Ryder has great voice acting and I'm enjoying her goofiness, I chuckled more than once. Party banter - I would just want more of it!! Sure, not all the companions are equally interesting, but that was the case in the previous series as well. Do you guys remember Jacob from ME2? No? Barely? Thought so. You can't expect to care for new chars the same you cared for chars whose story arc extended over a whole trilogy. The story so far is top of the notch mysterious, I can't wait to know more about the remnants and their uber-tech.
    Everyone's saying Witcher 3 blah blah, but it appears no one remembers that Witcher had its own fetch quests "Bring me some verbane" type. Game is good, characters are solid, I would give it a super deserved 9. But I'm giving 10 to help with the scores cause 4.6 is just not fair. Will come back to this after I've finished the whole game. Now go play and stop hating on something only cause you think it's cool to do so.

The story sucks, the conversations are so sale, the menu system is an absolute nightmare, and the control of the character is just terrible. I was duped into dropping full price on this and will just trade it in with a loss. Those reviews are read by critics are biased. At least Mafia III was playable and had its moments. The only moment this game will have is being thrown in the trash. Expand

    Have been playing for about 60 hours now. It becomes better and better.
    CONS:
    - CC is worse than in ME1. Srsly, why so many dumb tattoos and eyeliners, I want to change eyebrows; - most of the time face animations are REALLY weird, even comparing to previous ME games; - by the goddess, why all asari, including such important characters as Lexi, are clones????; - no minimap; - just a

    CONS:
    - CC is worse than in ME1. Srsly, why so many dumb tattoos and eyeliners, I want to change eyebrows;
    - most of the time face animations are REALLY weird, even comparing to previous ME games;
    - by the goddess, why all asari, including such important characters as Lexi, are clones????;
    - no minimap;
    - just a few really renegade answer choices;
    - sometimes dialogs are quite meaningless and full of "typical blockbuster" lines;
    - can't say about the whole story, but for now in general plot is trivial;
    - angara seem trivial as well;
    - need to go "deeper" to see great sides of game.

    PROS:
    - all animations (except facial, obviously) are nice and reminding of the trilogy (oh, that Shepard dance);
    - non-main missions and quest lines are soo exciting! Haven't got all that tedious colonisation stuff as expected!;
    - loyalty missions are AWESOME! 11/10 And there's not only one quest for each companion!;
    - lots of interesting conversations and interactions - with companions (especially!) and other NPCs;
    - romances with thrilling story beyond the Tempest ;з
    - beautiful landscapes, beautiful design;
    - Nomad can climb everywhere. No ****
    - Tempest is magnificent. Those views... The crew isn't stuck in one room, no more loadings;
    - jetpack is just PERFECT;
    - dynamic fights, never getting bored;
    - attention to the details is really incredible;
    - easter eggs!;

    and what is the most important - I feel that is Mass Effect game. At some episodes I've even been forgetting that I'm playing not as Shepard, but as Ryder.

    Haters gonna hate. The herd instinct is powerfull indeed.

    It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

    While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

    A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
