It's not fair to write a review without playing the game, but I don't think I can continue. I'd rather play Horizon or Wildlands again than keep going through this sesspool. I feel bad for those lazy ass devs, they are going to get hauled over the coals for this flop. Our local store has zero launch marketing. I though I had the launch date wrong. I'm taking it back to swap for pretty much anything else. Probably put a pre-order on prey or pickup dishonoured 2. Expand

When playing on any difficulty higher than normal the enemies become bullet spunges. The fun part is that they're still overly aggresive and just keep walking towards you while insta-blasting your shields. As the AI of your allies is about as good as having a twig to back you up, you're mostly fighting alone. This meens you'll be seeing a lot of checkpoints.

Yes, checkpoints.... And they're at some unbelievable poor places. I can't count all the times I had to go over the same four or five minutes or walking/driving to get back to the point I was. When I got there I basically got shot down by an overwhelming amount of enemies yet again. This is just the most lazy kind of combat design I've seen in years. Add to that faults that should have not been close to a released game like enemies moving through objects (still being able to hit you, but not vice verse) and mistakes the average steam greenlight developer would even cringe at.

If you're thinking of buying this game for the gameplay: leave it.
If you're thinking of buying this game for the graphics: hahahahahahahaha, nope.
If you're thinking of buying this game for the story: look elsewhere.

It's a shame that the ME title got put onto this dirthole of a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have some good things to say. I also have some not-so-nice things to say.

Overall, I have fun playing Andromeda, and that's the big question I tend to ask myself before I play a game: Will I have fun? Yes, Andromeda is fun... but is it as fun as the Shepard trilogy? Eh... I'm conflicted, but mostly, I can't say it is. Good.... but not fantastic. If I was to give the Shepard trilogy 10/10 (and I would), this would be 8.

I'll first go into my negative issues, then my positives.

    CONS:
    1. The main story's basic idea-- traveling to Andromeda and settling there-- isn't a bad one. In fact, I was excited for the great Milky Way pilgrims. I also loved learning about the angara. The problem is the villain. He's basically Corypheus, another Big Bad who's evil for the sake of being evil. I knew from the moment I met him, I'd beat him by the end by sacrificing nothing whatsoever. It was pointless to see him as a threat. And just like in Dragon Age Inquisition (which Bioware promised this game is nothing like), he wants you because you have a power he doesn't. This is all sounding familiar, and I'm kind of bored of it by now.
With that said... after I concluded the story, I was smiling when talking to my crew, and I felt proud of my accomplishment. Even if it felt very feasible before I did it.

    2. The lack of seriousness in conversation. Shepard's Mass Effect had an impact because of its cinematic drama. Now every character acts like a smug, college-grad D-bag, from the School of Nathan Drake. I HATE that smartass attitude, and it makes me want to punch every person who talks like it. It made me like the characters A LOT less.

    3. Not a big fan of the combat. It's not bad... but it's not as fun as ME3's (in my opinion). I played an Infiltrator in all three MEs, and loved it. ME3 especially, thanks to slow-mo targeting. That slow-mo targeting doesn't exist in Andromeda, and made sniping COMPLETE HELL, because enemies move CONSTANTLY. Without bullet time and "concentration" mods, sniping isn't nearly as fun as it used to be. As you're aiming, you're getting rained on by bullets and can die in an instant. Even with tactical cloak, it can be annoying. I miss ME3 Infiltrator. I also hate the cover system. In the snap-to-cover system in original games, I at least knew I was IN cover.

    4. I usually play a gay male character. There was only one guy to romance, and we didn't even get a sex scene. It faded to black. Kind of insulting, to be honest. I read "hip gyrating" and "moaning" was in this game. Guess that's for the straight people only.

    5. Animations aren't great. They aren't the worst I've ever seen either, and I think their terribleness was highly over-exaggerated-- but they still look "off". The weird thing was, the animations suddenly, out of completely f***ing nowhere, became AWESOME in the final story mission. Everyone moved more fluidly, including Ryder. it really threw me off my guard. I couldn't even pay attention to the dialogue because I was so amazed. Why didn't the rest of the game look like that? I saw that and said "that's what I want!"

    PROS:
    1. Exploration. I loved this a lot more than the main story. I loved it so much that I saved it until after the main story. In fact, I went through the main story looking forward to the exploration. It was worth it.

    2. The new race, angara, and their history. Jaal is by far the best character in this whole game, and I loved getting to know him. I took him on almost every mission.

    3. Conversation options based on personality. At first, I hated the idea of being rid of Paragon/Renegade. Now, I really like the change. People aren't black and white. Neither should Ryder be. You can still do "d**k-ish" things, just in different ways.

    4. A lot more skills and abilities than the previous games. One thing I love in RPGs is experimenting with options, and man does Andromeda have a lot of those, skill-wise. I can literally be any kind of Pathfinder I want. I recently made myself a construct-obsessed engineer who carries a really big f**king gun.

    5. Loyalty missions making a comeback. I love those. Even if they don't feel as impacting as ones in the past.

    6. It wasn't overly long. This is a complaint for some, but I hate 100+ hour games, because it lowers replay value. I never replayed DAI because it was just too damn long.

    7. There's a lot of stuff to do. I mean a LOT. Maybe even too much.

    8. The vaults are f**king awesome.

Overall, I do really like Andromeda, a lot. But I can't say I love it yet. They left options open for future sequels and DLC, and honestly, I'm more excited about those and what comes in the future than I was at completing the main story. I want to see how my choices carry out later on. If they have me excited for that, then they did make me invested, and that's all I ask. The game is definitely not bad enough to warrant a "zero out of ten."

Since Im playing this on PS4 it lags like hell specially those over rendered CGI background lighting, texture everything else is unpleasant the only thing enjoyable is the gameplay though its pretty much like a basic TPS shooter game with jumping jetpack joyride feel of the game. Though nothing is innovative when I say nothing is innovative nothing is new! and from my perspective that the game isn't developed by BIoware but by some interns who got their idea from potatoes because your Pathfinder looks like a potato specially Sarah Ryder. Alright! less ranting and more to technicalities of the game.

Graphics in this game is very bad indeed its really bad that makes my eyes experienced a low stance katana katana slash from William. Its poorly designed that you won't admire it. In Final Fantasy XV despite of its under developed game play and customization the graphics are really top notched.

Gameplay is the same nothing is innovative if they call jet pack is something innovative then you guys are wrong jet pack feature is already seen in various shooter games and oh dashing mid air looks cool? I bought a game with nothing new Metal Gear Solid V is even better than this.

Story is by far the worst in the Mass Effect Trilogy heck its even worst than Nioh. Dialogues are poorly written that it makes the character sounds like a Persona high school student even the narrative in the cutscenes, In comparison to a Yoko Taro story telling this is rubbish like how many team does Bioware/EA has to write a story?

This isn't worth $60 I suggest if you love RPG specialist JRPG's wait for Persona 5 you'll be wasting your time in playing this game

I couldn't get far on the first planet after running into the aliens as the game engine would completely wonk out on random slopes and initiate that hilarious foot shuffle thing that stops you from moving. This along with the absurd auto saving interval meant I was replaying large sections every time I died from game bugs.

As a result, being an Adept biotic now is boring as all hell. In a battle, your companions move erratically and bizarrely, coupled with their incredible inability to do almost anything useful you will find yourself wondering why the hell Bioware even bothered. You're not a commander anymore — you're a god damn chump with two lame-ass AI following you. So combat, in the end, kind of ruined too.

It's impressive that beauty of the galaxy is incorporated, but beauty of creatures and species is not. Why force me to be a hideous, awkward af squeeb face, no matter how much I tweak in character creation? Surely beauty of the face must still exist in the future. Or at least give me some in-game backstory or reason as to why every human looks like a troglodyte, grease baboon with antithetical emotional responses. In each dialogue interaction, I'm either laughing or just creeped the **** out. How is it that with more money, resources, and time, the characters are worse than 10 years ago? No one on the team cross-referenced and said "Oh **** it was better before..."?

The game is a spit in the face of all Mass Effect fans. I felt masochistic playing it, a weird sense of self-torture and empty promise. Waste of money. ****ING REGRET buying it. EA can suck it.

I have enjoyed aspects of the game and nowhere near the level I would of expected. Many areas are without proper polish and the formula doesn't seem to have improved. At one point I am looking at an image of the universe that is flat (obvious skybox), poor detail and ruins the atmosphere; this sums up the game..

Some of the missions, or I should say MOST of them are shallow and boring. The side quests, which are usually the bread and butter for RPG games, are hollow and lifeless. Some of the side quests are outright ridiculous and unacceptable for an RPG in 2017. One of them had me speak to an Angaran women who was upset because her sister was missing, Literally ten feet down the path and you find the body of her sister, scan it, then return to the women and she says oh I told her not to work alone. Mission Completed. Really? Is that what Bioware considers a side quest to be? World of Warcraft had side quests with more content and that's saying A LOT.

The primary gameplay loop is going to planets, improve the living conditions so it can be settled on, and that's it. The first planet was good even though the overall design was boring and empty. It had a sense of purpose. But that feeling you get from exploration and seeing things for the first time quickly wanes and is totally gone after the first planet. All the planets are approached in the same way, you go to these underground vaults, (which by the way all look and feel identical), do these terrible puzzle mini games, and interact with computer consoles by holding E. Its sad that the main plot point in the game, the ancient technology vaults, were copy pasted throughout all the planets. They even recycle the voice overs from Ryder and your allies. Always the same lines for every vault, "ok, remenant vault. Lets see if we can get this place running." Then at the end: "That never gets any less terrifying." I mean couldn't they have recorded like two extra lines so its not the same stuff over and over and blatantly lazy?

Everything feels hollow in the game, even the rich Mass Effect mythos. The previous games all had such personality in the galaxy and alien races, that wonderful charm and intrigue that Bioware was once capable of producing. But in Andromeda, not even your team mates are interesting. The team banter during gameplay is GONE. The conversations that your team would have, during and outside of combat. Instead you get LITERALLY two, or maybe three different lines that they repeat like clockwork, every five minutes. Its a HUGE turn off for me, and it just seems lazy. Hearing "I wonder if the Angara would let us train with them?" over and over from Cora makes me not even want to have her come with me when I go out on missions. It just constantly pulls you out of the immersion and highlights how lifeless and hollow your team is. I'm not sure how Bioware could have gone backwards like that, considering even the first Mass Effect had better design in so many different aspects, but its sad.

A lot of people are upset because there is really not much technical advancement from the original ME games. I mean they have had so long since the last one, what like six years? Its baffling and hard to understand how or why this game is less impressive than ME:2 or 3. I am so disappointed, this was supposed to be a classic, like Witcher 3. But just another rare miss, another game with great potential that falls short of greatness. But that doesn't mean this game isn't fun or entertaining. I was expecting to be addicted and in love with it, sadly, I boot it up and can only stand playing it for a few hours a day, and then I'm sick of it. Ill finish it, but I'm at the point where I feel like I'm just trying to get my moneys worth and playing it is almost forced. There are a lot of great moments, but many bland moments in between those few good ones. Critics bashed the beginning of the game but I actually LOVED the beginning and thought it was amazing, it lost steam after the first planet. Heres to hoping that Bioware can bring ME series back to greatness. Or maybe its time to ditch the series and move onto a new IP.

I've played all 3 and I knew with a different development team that this game isn't going to compare. So my standards aren't set so high. Think of it as Dragon Age: Inquisition in space. Here's my breakdown:

    Pros
    - Combat is exciting and faster pace with the introduction of the jump pack and dodge ability
    - Large planet sandboxes with interesting terrain.
    - Single Player and Multi Player trophies are combined (Don't play MP? You can get their trophies by completing certain SP tasks and vice versa).
    - Large array of Weapon/armor customisation and development and Mods.
    - The Nomad Land Rover is fun to drive
    - They bring back Horde Mode from ME 3 and also Strike Teams

    Cons
    - Facial animations are crap
    - Squad mate NPCs are forgettable and have no strong link with Protagonist
    - The cover system in combat sucks and you pay dearly with it (same style they use with Ghost Recon: Wildlands)
    - Resource gathering on planets is boring and most of the time unrewarding (you spend a minute flying to a planet and finding out you get fk all)
    - The Tempest is tiny compared to the Normandy. Doesn't feel alive.
    - Glitches and bugs everywhere (most are pretty funny)

Overall, 6. I seriously hope they learn from all these bad reviews,

The gameplay features are poorly translated from previous games in what feels like a soul-less attempt to win over former fans. They never even address the third game which was one of the worst cliff-hangers in gaming history.

The only reason I'm rating this game above a 0 is that I was able to sit through it in it's entirety and the game is playable. Buggy, boring, bland, and soul-less, but playable.

This game had a massive budget and took five years to produce. This is nothing more than pathetic. Don't play this game and don't give EA games your money if this is the type of product they produce.

Individually speaking, this was the biggest disappointment of ANY series. It's not even the horrible animations, poor dialogues, lack of any emotional connection to the characters; the main thing wrong with this Mass Effect is the fact the missions are boring, nothing really happens. It's a very cheap spin-off.

I tried really hard to finish the game, just to make my money worth something, but unfortunately i couldn't

And this could have been simply overlooked if the game had a good design, if the animations were at LEAST decent, if the writing wasn't just horrendous and if the game did not have more glitches than Mass Effect 1 that came out in 2007, but no. It's not. It's as horrible as the news about it are, if not worse

Ultimately, BioWare has failed completely. I dont know if this is because EA owns them and EA has failed to make a good game in awhile or why, but this game had so much potential and it failed. Just wait till all that not free DLC is released, which may make this game decent.

The story is uninteresting, the main villain does not have a brutal feel that everything is at stake if he wins. The combat has a punch but after the 10th same wave of enemies it also feels a selfless grind. Enemy types are very few, also if you see them from a distance their moves are stuttered (probably a bad design choice). Today I uninstalled it, and I am not sure if I will ever install it again. Andromeda is not worthy of being called a Mass Effect game. It does the series a disservice by being just mediocre and 'just passable' in every single aspect. This game is not something one would expect from the pioneers and innovators of the cinematic storytelling genre who used to set the bar. It fails to live up to Bioware's previous releases, let alone surpass them.

-Story is weak and generic, with badly spaced, disjointed narrative. Big chunks of the Mass effect lore has been conveniently swept under the rug, and retcons are everywhere.

-Protagonist portrayal- they tried to borrow the 'personality' concept from Dragon Age 2 where your character could be diplomatic, agressive or sarcastic. Only this time around the character can be 'casual
, ' professional', 'logical' or ' emotional'. Big problem with that? They all amount to same thing, with a very slight variation. Your character won't tell anyone to 'shove off', even if the situation truly warrants it. He/She will put up with anyone's **** politely, no matter the personality path you choosing. There is no confrontational options, neither with npc, quest givers, or your companions.

-Characters (usually the studio's strength) are bland and uninspired. That they unloading their whole story upfront, instead of developing over time just highlights the problem. You don't get to learn anything nuanced about their character, there simply isn't anything they won't tell you the first couple times you talk to them.

-Combat is horrible: they went from real time with pause and full squad control to controlling your own character only with super minimal ability load out (3 abilities at a time with convoluted profile switching is a crime). Your squad are just bots who tag along and do their own thing.

-Exploration - the vistas are the only positive thing about this game. The quest that tied to the exploration however can be summed up by scan, scan, scan some more and fetch ad naseum. Oh, and repeat exactly same thing on the next planet. If you thought Dragon Age inquisition had it bad with filler quests, prepare for something even worse.

-Music score - minimalistic where present, absent in most of the scenes. A big let down compared to epic scores of their previous games.

-Graphics - planetary visuals are the only good thing about it. Character detailing suffered a MAJOR step back from ME2 and ME3. There is one SINGLE asari head that's shared across the whole asari population, same with Salarians. Turians look like someone forgot to give them facial texture, nevermind the colony markings. I guess the Krogan look the least offensive out of the bunch, and that's not saying much. They looked better in ME2 and 3, just as did all other alien species. Humans took a beating too, btw. It's not just the aliens.

Game Issues: Inability to save during priority missions. Horrendous animations. Gamebreaking bugs. Recycled alien life, bosses and puzzles from planet to planet. Characters referencing events that have not happened yet, often spoiling the story. Banter glitches where the whole party is silent for the duration of 2 planets and then exploding with banter only to go mute again the next planet around.

I do not recommend this game to anyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Right out of the front gate, Andromeda has one glaring issue: the character generator. It's disgustingly limited, and all of the starting templates are as unattractive as they can possibly be, which makes the limitations that much more infuriating. Dragon Age Inquisition had the option to not only change the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth, but it also gave you a "sculpting" option that made it very easy to customize the character. Andromeda has none of that, limiting you to being able to change the "size" of the eyes, nose, and mouth, but not the shape. This means you have to pick whichever ugly template is the least ugly and try to work with it to make it attractive, which is a chore to say the least.

The next problem comes in with writing and character development. Halfway through the game I had a realization that left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't give a crap about any of the characters except for Alec Ryder, Jaal, and Vetra. I didn't even care about Ryder. And this comes down to terrible writing. The characters are, for the most part, cardboard. Vetra and Jaal were the only members of your team that were even remotely relatable, and even that fell short because the dialogue for almost all of the characters is cringy at best, and straight up awful at worst. And that terrible dialogue carries into the romances, making them either too brief or unbearably cheesy.

The next major problem Andromeda has is the tedious nature of the game. Everything from the conversations with your crew to the side quests and the gathering are teeth-grindly tedious. In Bioware's other games, I would look forward to chatting with my crew, but in Andromeda, the dialogue problems and the cardboard personalities make the conversations a chore. Speaking of chores, the side quests are nothing short of that. Every area of the game has very MMO-like side quests that have you running around the planets doing a bunch of random things for people that are, in no way, helpful to the story and feel like padding. It was almost as if Bioware shoved all of these quests in and said, "Here, load the game up with sidequests so that players will be so busy doing them that they won't notice how lazy we were with this game!" But the final and most annoying tedium comes in with exploring planets and gathering resources. When you enter a new system, there are several planets and anomalies you can find, which is fine. What ISN'T fine is how LONG it takes to approach the new system and the planets. Every time you click on a system or a planet, there is an unskippable sequence of your ship slowly (and I mean SLOWLY) approaching said planet or system. That makes something that should take a few minutes take up to half an hour.

I won't go into the graphical problems because everyone has hammered that in, but suffice it to say that all of those complaints are well-founded, along with several other major issues that make the game unplayable in certain places. Whole quest chains that cannot be done because you can't talk to the person who starts it. Parts of a quest that don't trigger properly and make the quest unbeatable. Then there's the dialogue issues where dialogue just doesn't play. If this were a low-budget game, these issues may be excusable, but this game cost 40 million dollars to make, so there is NO excuse.

Now to what the game did right: the combat and the Alec Ryder story. As many problems as the game has, I can't deny that it's a freaking blast to play. The combat is smooth, the customization of the powers is great, and the boss battles are some of best I've ever seen. They are just challenging enough to be fun and leave you satisfied when you finally win. The only gripe I have is the fact that you can only have 3 abilities active at a time, which limits how much you're able to take advantage of the customization. This is only a small problem, however.

Now on to Alec Ryder. In this player's humble opinion, HE should have been the main character. His story about trying to save his wife's life is, perhaps, one of the most interesting things about the game, and he is one of the only truly three-dimensional characters. A whole game could have been made around Alec traveling the galaxy trying like hell to find what he needs to save his wife. It wouldn't have been anything HUGE like destroying the Reapers, but it would have been a relatable story, especially with how human Alec feels in comparison to the cardboard characters in Andromeda.

All in all, I'd give this game a 4/10 because SOME things did work, but the few things that do work do NOT make up for the severe shortcomings of the rest of the game.

For those considering whether to buy this game or not, I would say....
To the first critique: I haven't played prior ME games so I can't give a fair comparison. BUT, if you like games with massive open worlds, a well executed action-rpg combat system, plentiful romance options, and a Dragon Age-like dialogue system, you will most likely have fun with this.
To the second critique: I haven't seen a lot of bugs with the updates.
To the third type of neg reviewer: Get over your entitlement. A game does not deserve a low score because it fails to reflect your prejudices.

This game should not be missed. If you haven't played it yet, go get it.

Bashing Mass Effect Andromeda is really stupid and so hot right now. Those virgins should get their **** together. Remember how everyone was sooo pissed that Mass Effect 2 was not the same like Mass Effect 1? That it was more action packed and there was no space for exploration? Well guess what, Andromeda is the true succesor to the first game. You are again exploring the unknown and this time it suits your character better, because he/she is not a **** legendary Commander Shepard but a young visionary. I would bet that the haters are mostly casuals who consider themselfs fanboys because they played last two games cuz Mass Effect 1 was so old and obsolete for them. They are now hating that the world is more open than in the sequels. I'm so satisfied with the game that I can't think about anything else. They combined the true sci-fi feel and great combat from sequels to one amazing game!

The animations are quite funny but it's Mass Effect for fu*ks sake! Funny shepard animation bugs were a huge memes! I'm playing on ultra and I only got stucked between crates once. Not a single walk/run animation bug ever, no dissapearing NPCs etc. Characters are great. They have a young feel and legit reasons to travel so far away. Peebee is funny, clever ADHD asari which is kinda cute. Hating this game because its trying to be SJW? Well guess what. The game is set in future which means that if humanity does not consume itself and everything will be nice and utopistic this is what modern culture and society will look like, well minus the aliens. Mass Effect was always trying to look like reality. That this could actually happen. Unlike Star Wars which just is (or was) Mass Effect was always trying to be sciency and had explanation about everything.

There is a lot of hate for the first mission. Well I get it. Everything happend so fast and the amount of information is quite overwhelming to a newcomer but a player familiar with Mass Effect it should be just fine. To be honest, first mission in Mass Effect 1, tha infamous Eden Prime is really similar. You are attacked by mindless husks created by spikes that impales human? Dont tell me that the first time you played Mass Effect it was not overwhelming. I spent countless hours reading the codex. A lot of information is still in a Codex which is a trademark for Mass Effect games. Everything is nicely writen and only thing I miss is that the Codex isn't dubbed. That voice was just amazing!

The longer you play the game gets better and better. Scaning is amazing and I just love to explore and read all new information. Its funny to bash this aspect of the game because in Witcher you are using your Witcher senses for everything. You could think that you should use your witcher senses to wipe your witcher arse.. Don't get me wrong, Witcher 3 was and is amazing. One of the best, but it was bugged as well and it did not get this amount of hate. If the wticher was made by EA the situation would be same belive me.

Combat system is so much fun and the multiplayer got more exciting! Cover system works well and jump jet is really cool. Multiplayer matches got shorter which is good. Those last 3 waves in Mass Effect 3 were just too much. Multiplayer is also harder. In the first match I got rekt on bronze. You cant no longer just hold your ground. Which is good and bad. Well you still kinda can but its much much harder to do it. You need to move around or you are ****

All and all this game is one of the best sci-fi games and a great start for a trilogy. Don't listen to the bashing reviews and make your own statement. And finally end the bashing hate train. If you could not get over Mass Effect 3 (which in extended cut was really good, end to an era of Shepard) ending than perhaps you should move with your life. Hating the game over its animation or just bacuse its SJW, more like first game or that our lovely characters got left behing is so **** stupid. Get your **** together virgins!

This means that facial animation, dialogue, morality and difficult choices play the core vital role. The 5 yr development should have focused on those parts and not multiplayer/micro-transactions/combat and environmental aesthetics. Yes those are nice to have but this is a MASS EFFECT an RPG genre game and not some shooter/instagram vista photo-op game. Morality and choice also should have played a role as it will deepen and make the characters more likeable.

    who says that.. dialogue please!
The fetch side quest is just terrible i would love it if they took a little bit of consideration crafting it weaving through a mini story and not just some go here and get me x number of stuff.
I never felt that i needed to take any of my crew mate in certain maps. I remember back in mass effect 2, i was torn in choosing who to bring in a mission because it was a Krogan planet but here. Meh same crew from start to finish. no reason to change. i try to be a douche bag to them but no reaction wtf? where are the tough choices with reason and weight. Everything feels rushed why to compete with horizon, zelda, nioh, nier? IF that is the reason for not delaying this massive project then i pity the dev teams. Just a delay for another 3months to polish things would have made this a real gem.

People are saying animations can be patched well stfu have you worked in animation? do you know how hard to do the whole thing again? it doesn't solve in a patch update it requires either an overhaul of the entire game.

This long rant is because i value the work BioWare has given its gamers but this game is not upon their standards nor worthy of the Mass Effect franchise. This should have been another IP instead.

That is what made me quit playing the dragon age INQ, it just kept GOING with VERY little story progression, and if you did a side mission/quest it would rope you into side dungeons/events you COULD NOT LEAVE without spending another hour or something in them. Sure ME1-2-3 did that kind of thing, but it was FAR more linear with FAR more choices and impacts while this style of open world only results in a FEW choices mattering and any of those choices only effect what a few chars say to you not their entire character. IE in ME1-2-3 and dragon age 1-2 you could make someone hate you or disrespect them and it would effect their combat skills or unlock/lock skills, in this, just, nothing, they change a few key words of dialog.

They also severally limited gameplay in terms of combat this time. No letting you use health-kits like in ME1-2-3, having to find ammo from crates in preset spots with only 4 ammo reloads, each gun takes up a refill so if you restock 2 guns with ammo 2 of the 4 refills are used, instead of dropped ammo from enemies.

Limited use of abilities by saying it uses a power cell, weapons start out SUPER weak unless you have difficulty set down, you can't rez a teammate from a distance because you have to run up to them out of cover and hold to rez, your limited to ONLY 3 ABILITIES unless you hot-swap to another PRESET set of abilities which then sets those new abilities on a COOL-DOWN when swapped to even if your abilities were fully ready. IE see dropship dropping tons of grunts, swap to AOE power set as you enter combat, OOOPS to bad, you now have to wait 30-40 seconds to use your abilities now....

And don't get me started on the animations. I just replayed through the series and watched others stream it on twitch A LOT recently. The fact they could not import/adapt even just the facial motions etc from the first 3 games is VERY sad. I mean wasn't Dragon Age INQ using the same engine? Could they not use the same assets/code for facial animations? Those were at-least far better and it was in the same engine with likely only SOME code needing to be redone to get it to fit on the models right.

Overall I am giving it a lower score of 5 until the issues are fixed. As which point I will redo my review.

Bioware did a total betray, after leading the game industry in progressiveness. The gameplay is alright, but they also seemed to screw over pure biotic/tech players as there are a million different guns and only 3 ability slots. Sure you can switch your loadout, but then they all go on cooldown and it really messes up the flow of action. The cryo perks are mostly about crafting which is mostly about weapons, so once again, it's all about non-tech/biotic builds. Also the plot...The whole "youre the only one who can save the world so special everyone follows you" trope was fun for one, maybe two games, but it's boring now, The story itself doesn't seem very original, making me roll my eyes more times than feel any sense of wonder. Oh okay, now you can also slide/rocket jump into and out of cover, but essentially it is the same. The gun is still the meat and bones of this title and with a budget of 40.000.000 dollars this shouldn't be the case. Another bugbear of this is the ever slow retardation of the dialogue system. There's the wheel, which now uses even less words and instead uses little symbols and keywords.

    This deserves no Mass Affection.

    I keep it short:

ME1, ME2, ME3 are about story, characters, species and relations between the latter two.

ME Andromeda tries to be the same, but it also includes new gameplay layers due to its focus on an outdated openworld concept. The result: It fails at both ME's core elements (see above) and at being a great openworld game.

    Sad, but true.

The pros of the game are the vast amount of content, gorgeously crafted planets, fun exploration and very fun shooting/combat mechanics. The cons as most have pointed out are the poor cut scene animations and in some instances worse dialogue than the previous M.E. games though some of the dialogue is excellent and some is poor, so it's a mixed bag that overall ends of being pretty decent. Another con is the clunky UI at times as well, Bioware made doing simple things a bit too difficult in certain instances (like crafting and the quest layout), but because there is so much to do and so much going on in the game it is somewhat understandable. The male Ryder animations seem to be better than the female Ryder for some strange reason. The graphics of the worlds in the game are absolutely incredible, you will find yourself admiring the beauty and vastness of the planets often if you are like me (this is something I did in M.E. 2 and 3 as well, but with the advanced technology nowadays this game obviously blows them away on that level). There are certainly a lot of things to like about the game and I think if you are a die-hard RPG fan who loves huge games with tons of content and an intriguing premise, as well as people who love sci-fi in general I would certainly recommend the game to you. Content, fun factor, and exploration are far more important elements of RPG's than graphics and cut scene animations so because the game nails the important parts of an RPG I feel the game deserves a good rating. The cut scene animations aren't that bad either, they end of being pretty mediocre, which is unfortunate but they truly don't take away from the insane amount of fun to be had exploring a brand new galaxy and the very compelling narrative ( I mean, come on, starting a civilization on a different galaxy, that's pretty cool)! In addition, the game is an absolute masterpiece of leftist 3rd wave intersectional feminist propoganda. It is absolutely full of leftist propaganda. There is an absurd number of homosexuals and "trans" on a COLONIZATION mission to another galaxy. They, in the most cringy way possible, managed to insert the "respect my pronouns" (male/female/neutral) **** into the game and retconned Asari lore in the process.

The "exiles" are clearly the libertarian/conservative minded people; and are implied to be mentally impaired and suffering from neurological disorders that makes them dislike and reject the technocratic/progressive/state/government control of the Nexus who "plays God." You can even "fix" the exiles with medicine to make them less "violent" and rejecting of the "rightful authorities."

The game is a travesty. Bioware is filled with SJW's, people unqualified for their jobs, and are more concerned with creating liberal/leftist propaganda than art.

RPG's are my thing. I've played near every one that has ever come out, from single player to multiplayer to MMO; WoW, FF14, ESO, Everquest, SWG, LoTR Online, Elder Scrolls, and so on and so forth.

Don't buy Mass Effect Andromeda. Go buy The Witcher III, or replay it and do the DLC if you haven't. Do not buy Mass Effect Andromeda. Bioware needs to be punished for this travesty and for pissing on the gaming community for making leftist propaganda filled with horrible bugs and crap animation instead of trying to make ART like CDPR, Bethesda (TES III), and some other companies have in the past and present.

Sure the game has a little wonky animations here or there but I would say wonky animations took up 2 minutes out of my 50 hour play through. For the vast majority of the game it is completely UNNOTICEABLE, and there are A LOT of animation moments that really make the characters feel human, and I can't say I have ever felt that in a game before even the OT. Now I will admit a lot of these moments come well after 20 hours, but those moments are beautiful nonetheless. A lot of the critics have said that crew mates really make the game shine and I completely agree most definitely the best part of this game. I played a character that didn't take herself too seriously, and it felt like I was playing ME 3's Citadel DLC for a while. I would like to remind people that the writing in that DLC was pretty juvenile with hilariously stupid one liners and didnt really take itself all that seriously. This game has the exact same appeal, and left me with a lot of moments of where I had a good laugh. This game feels significantly less serious than the other games, and you really need to go into this game with a different mentality than you had for the OT, and just enjoy the ride. However, I do have some complaints scanning wasn't really annoying, but getting lost in vaults was. Many people were saying combat was amazing and personally I thought it was ok at best. For some reason guns don't feel like they had any weight behind them and I played a shot gun playthrough. Then there were some really BS quests that everyone should feel ok to ignore. But all in all, I really feel like the devs tried so hard to listen to many of the former games complaints, and make something they could be proud of. Exploration was fun and there was so many moments that left me like "Holy crap this game is gorgeous", also it was interesting how just about everyone had some kind of story going. The ending was badass; it left me smiling like an idiot, because it was pretty heartwarming. Then they created these awesome characters and beautiful worlds to frame it all. I was heartbroken when I saw the animation videos and original critic reviews and was really close to cancelling my pre-order. After beating it, I'm so happy I didn't cancel, because while I can't say that it's amazing, it has a lot of great elements to make it a good game. Expand

If you can work through that, tho, the game opens up into a gorgeous, sprawling world to explore and populate. The people you meet are not your BFF right away. You aren't a tested and respected N7, like Shepard was. Ryder is an unproven kid with an unasked for mission. Much of the "leadership" sees you as a pawn, or a tool, or a weapon, or an idiot. Ryder has to figure out the path to success, and that path is messy and complicated and incredibly fun.

The main quest is good--not great, but good enough to hang a story on. The real meat of MEA is the relentless fight for survival, respect and influence. Sometimes, I was reminded me of early Elder Scrolls games. Yeah, sure, you're the Chosen One, but can you walk from one town to the next without being killed by the enemy, or eaten by local fauna, or humiliated by a petty politician?

The paragon/renegade dichotomy is gone, replaced with a much more nuanced system, which I quite liked. The voice acting is, as always with BioWare, good to high quality. The writing overall was pretty good, if occasionally uneven. (Never terrible, and occasionally sublime.)

Personally, I found the game to be worth the time and money, and I'm very glad I powered through the first few cruddy hours. After that, I thoroughly enjoyed the game and have become as attached to it as I was to the OT.

Can also recommend playing as an Adept, wich is immensely badass compared to the regular soldier that many people seem to go for, the combat is excellent and the gameplay doesnt have many bugs at all.

Absolutely worth the money I spent on it, I had a blast!

What have you done to this wonderful franchise? My heart is bleeding...
ME: Andromeda is a disappointment in relation the the trilogy, which was simply a masterpiece.

I can't understand how someone could give this game more than a 6/10

I'm guessing the hatred here might stem from the overall game not measuring up to the unrealistic hype and pacing of the previous installments, the lack of Shepard or a Shepard-like main character, the fact that this game does little to tie itself to the original trilogy, and possibly people still upset over the ending of ME:3 and won't accept anything short of perfection now from Bioware.

I'm about 6hrs in so far and I'm enjoying it despite the glitches which I feel confident will be fixed over time. The story is interesting, some of the characters are well written and offset the terrible ones, which in my experience so far have just been limited to minor characters (I'm looking mainly at Addison here).

The gameplay itself is good, especially the fact you can now profile your skills and switch between them, no reason to start the game over from scratch if you'd rather focus on biotics instead of tech for instance. The research and crafting is interesting, especially how it breaks down tech from the Milky Way and that from Andromeda. If you've played the previous ME games you'll recognize a lot of the weapons, which I thought was a cool touch.

My biggest gripe so far are some of the side quests. I detest fetch quests or pointless running from one side of a map to another just to talk to one npc. But honestly this is a trap that virtually every RPG can't seem to avoid, other than the Witcher 3, but that game is the gold standard of RPGs now.

Overall I'd say this game is a solid 8 with potential to rise as high as a 9 depending on how I feel at the end of playing it. It certainly isn't a 4.4. There are a lot of truly bad games out there that should be rated that low, this isn't one of them. Aliens: Colonial Marines comes to mind.

Not a single character even remotely as memorable as garrus, Tali wrex, or even the forgettable Ashley.

The only place where this game isn't abysmal is gameplay. The controls are actually pretty fluid. To bad the awful enemy AI ruins it. No where is this as apparent as in multiplayer where enemies literally try to stand on you. Just walking towards your location without regard for their own safety. And on the subject of multiplayer, enemies are in some cases immune to damage, can shoot through walls and their bullets literally follow you around corners. Instead of having them aim or even reloading, they just constantly hit you with a locked on string of bullets and Lazer beams that follow you while jumping and dashing, never actually missing.

This is the biggest piece of **** I've ever played. The single player is tied to multiplayer, which is designed to be almost unplayable if you don't drop $100 on micritransactions first. Bravo.

This is one of the most boring and disappointing games I've played and I loved the Mass Effect franchise.

You really have to force yourself to keep interested in this game,

It also looks like Bioware went out of there way to make the female characters unattractive, not sure what they were trying to accomplish.

Mass Effect Andromeda present itself as a re-imagination of the beloved series which tries to capture discovery aspect of ME1 and character-driven epic-plot from ME2. But unfortunately it fails in almost every aspect of it.

To begin with I'd say that MEA has the best environment among all of Mass Effects games. Planets looks exotic, interesting to explore and distinct from each other.

And that's all the good stuff.
On the other note, we were told by Bioware Montreal that we can expect ME2 level of characters and deep, intriguing, exciting interaction with them like it was in ME2. And on that front it is a complete bust. Protagonists and their crew are straightforward, awkward and rather ludicrous (not even accounting for facial animation).
The other part of bad character writing and plot itself is lackluster warped dialog wheel, where you don't even have binary paragon/renegade option. Rather, in most cases it has only one option divided into two just for an illusion of options.
But that's just ruined core values of the series, somehow MEA manages to turn cinematic-single player RPG into mediocre MMO. Forget about epic stories of curing genophage, chasing villains and saving planets. Now you are a Pathfinder - Sudoku-solver, space-plumber, bug-collector and fungus-scanner and of course in order to complete all these collect-fetch quests you have to travel all over the map on the Nomad, clunky ground car.
And now the funniest part - even praised by many reviewers combat system actually looks like 5th wheel in a car. Here is the thing - designers of MEA just without thinking pasted on jump-jets onto ME3 combat system, where you can survive without a cover just a few seconds. And more than that, many of ME3 skills were ground based (charge, nova, shockware) which requires target to be on or slightly above the ground. And everything would be fine in MEA to, but many species are flying, so your skill can't do damage to them. These things turns brilliant ME3 combat into "cheap Chinese clone".
Overall it feels and plays like mediocre clone of greatest game series.

P.s. Just to mention it, there is also many of technical issues like: Facial animation, technically bad UI (which again looks like a mediocre copy of ME3 UI) , frame drops, audio clipping, p2p multiplayer and many more.

I personally don't think these detract from the experience too much. I have found the combat to be great fun and the multiplayer to be pretty strong. The characters abilities have been much improved from the previous games, biotics actually seem powerful now! I'm 15 hours in so can't comment on the story too much, as I haven't seen much of it.

My biggest problem with the game are awful design decisions. For example, if I want to change my loadout (including what armour I wear) I have to do it in a room just off the bridge of the Tempest (Ryder's ship), or as I deploy on a mission; if I want to change the colour of the armour , I have to go to her quarters on the Tempest... It's a minor annoyance that can become extremely aggravating, especially when you combine it with things like pressing one button to open a menu and another to close it.

Not sure where all the zero scores are coming from, the game works and looks good for the most part which should earn at least a point or two! It's certainly not the disappointment that Dragon Age Inquisition was.

Edit: I'm now about thirty hours in and I have reduced the score a bit more. The locations remind me a lot of dragon age inquisition, they don't feel like open worlds to explore (for example you are in space suits that can resist radiation and poisonous gases but not go in water?). You can die from falling from height (despite having a jet pack AND despite it happening in one of the opening cut scenes, during which Ryder uses said jet pack to prevent death), areas just feel like an arbitrary are that has been built for a few fetch quests. The pockets of kett or remnant held areas are fortifications that you can attack, however the areas around them are often completely open providing you with no cover and them all the cover they need. The land vehicle has no weapons, which makes it a load of arse and you can't run people over, so you are forced into full frontal assaults (unless you have the tactical cloak)... The more I play, the more these spurious design decisions show their faces and reduce my enjoyment. Almost every mission requires you to scan something, oh look a meteorite, let's scan it, now it makes aliens attack, lets hold Y to stop that happening. "Hello pathfinder..." How do you know I am a pathfinder? You are an alien race I have only just encountered for the first time an hour ago, on a different planet and you are a prisoner of the Kett?

Combat is till generally fun though very easy, even on insanity, will it keep me playing long enough to finish? I doubt it but we shall see.

second edit: Sudoku to unlock terminals!?! Radiation or cold to limit your exploration?!? An omni-tool on your wrist that can interface with alien technology, turn into a melee weapon and conjure automated turrets... But I have to go back to my cabin and desktop computer to get my emails or send out strike teams!!!! What the **** were the designers thinking, I can check my emails on my mobile phone!!! The design decisions in this game work against it in every way. Imagine that Friends episode, where Monica declares "the rules control the fun" except here they don't control, they limit. It's getting tiresome, I'm really struggling to give a flying **** about the story because of so many of the awful game mechanics. The more I play, the more I see of Dragon Age Inquisition and the more I dislike it

Score reduced to 5, after 31 hours.

Mass Effect Andromeda is not at all a bad game or in my experience, as broken as some would leave you to believe. It will really depend on the player and what he or she can tolerate and what they can’t. The one thing that can’t be fixed would be it’s writing. Mass Effect Andromeda puts you in a new galaxy with new planets, but fails to match the wonder and excitement of discovery by making characters say the WORST possible things at the WORST possible times. This is a very effective way of taking the player out of the “moment” only to realize they are playing a video game. Then there are the dialogue options. I get that the paragon and renegade system might be “too Shepard” but nevertheless that system added depth and weight to each choice as well as consequence. In MA: Andromeda you will usually have 3 or 4 options varying from rational, emotional, or sarcastic. The problem is you can pretty much choose whatever you want but everything still plays out the same. This seems like it will make the player not care at all about what they say, which is a HUGE part of the Mass Effect series, and in my opinion what made Mass Effect Mass Effect. On the other hand I think the combat will be what saves this game. It’s fun, fluid and with the large amount of biotics, combat can be tailored to any play style. Enemies are quite challenging. I, as well as other reviewers from what I have seen have died a few times just on the tutorial planet. When it comes down to it Mass Effect Andromeda is nowhere near the greatness of the original trilogy and can unfortunately will probably be compared to being the “Phantom Menace” of the Mass Effect saga. If you are a long time Mass Effect fan looking for a evolution of the Mass Effect series this is not where you want to look. However, if all you need is more Mass Effect, Mass Effect Andromeda will be totally adequate. Expand

You can also fall through the ground at many places in the world which shows just horrible polish. Those are just bugs and could be fixed but the worst part is the interaction between characters. The dialogue is worse than a Mexican Soap Opera and facial animations are literally inhuman and unnatural. It's like they had some heavily autistic animator animate these characters based on his own understanding of how humans should interact.

Aside from the unnatural facial animations the faces of the characters are also very ugly and unnatural which compounds the problems when combined with the bad diaologue. I actually looked up the real actors and actresses that they modeled these characters off of and the actresses were far prettier in real life which tells me they either messed up or made them uglier on purpose for some arcane purpose.

I would've rated this game 4/10 if it were some small independent developer and it cost 19.99 instead of 59.99. But since this is supposed to be a AAA title from one of the largest developers in the industry it's totally unacceptable and it get's a 0.

What genre first comes to mind when you think of the original Mass Effect (2 and 3 to a lesser extent)? RPG. This is not. This is Mass Effect: Battlefront. The decisions you make feel petty in the grand scheme of things and you cannot control your squad mates in any meaningful way. This feels more like a single player shooter MMO with some RPG elements thrown in.

If it is trying to be an RPG, characters, story, and dialog are paramount. All fall flat here. RPG players live in a post-Undertale society and expect intelligent, emotional writing. This feels as though it was oriented towards elementary and highschoolers, which seems strange for a mature-rated game. You are supposed to feel immersed in an RPG - you are supposed to embody the protagonist. Regardless of what gender you choose, you feel like a fool with the logic, choices, and writing in the game. I really kept wondering if anyone on the writing team had ever stepped foot in a university. If you are working for one of the most beloved RPG gaming companies, you should be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your field. This feels as though BioWare hired temps or used an evolutionary algorithm to write this. Think of the most cliché game or movie you have seen, this is what you get here.

Graphics; where do I begin? Again, if you are hired by a "prestigious" company like BioWare to make games, you should be an SME in your field. This game is littered with wonky looking characters and models. This game looks outdated for Mass Effect 1. The human models are anthropomorphically inaccurate. The humans seem more similar to australopithecine rather than homo-sapiens-sapiens. We live in a post-Witcher 3 world, we as Millennial and younger consumers would rather have you take your time and make an incredible game than try to rush (not sure how five years is rushed) something to market. The cultural landscape has changed, we are not Baby-Boomers or gen-Xer's trying to keep up with the Joneses, we prefer quality over quantity.

If you are looking for an average shooter with some decent scenery, I still would not recommend this. EA and BioWare do not live in a vacuum; they have to compete in the market with other companies whom have made much better RPG shooters (Borderlands, for example). I would not recommend supporting BioWare or its publisher (meaning, do not spend your hard-earned cash on their products) until they can make a competent game.

Since Mass Effect 2 and 3, BioWare made the decision to move away from what had been their primary demographic, RPG players, to more mainstream individuals that prefer generic shooters, sports, and action games - and this even lets them down. Nothing special to see here in any form. Save your money for a company and a game that deserves your support, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, Nier Automata, or Persona 5.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.
