Overall, I think it is a good game. The gameplay is the best in a Mass Effect game yet, but its thin paper characters and unsubstantial plot don’t let this game excel as great, and more importantly, as a remarkable Mass Effect.

Second: The open world element is just a huge disappointment. Bioware gave us a huge map with nothing to do. The maps are beautiful, but kind of the same. Big maps with some side quests and main quests and looooooooooooooong walks of nothingness.
Third: The combat system is the greatest things about the game. They've improved it so much in comparison to the other games in the series. It's more fluid this time around.
Fourth: I hate the Mako. I hated it on ME 1 and I hate it now.
Fifth: The graphics are good. The whole game is gorgeous and that's something a Mass Effect game must have. Beautiful places everywhere, whether it's a desert planet, a night-club or a ship.
Sixth: The music and the sounds are good, but those things in ME 2 and 3 were better.
Seventh: The romance and friendship factor is good.
Final note: Even though the game launched with horrendous facial animations and bugs and the story not being that interesting, the game succeeds to keep the player going for it's Mass Effect feel, with different worlds for you to go and races for you to meet.

I know little of the Mass Effect universe, but this game allowed me to play regardless, as it did not center itself on the idea of knowing the past installments.

The combat was fun, and the ability to level up and gain new powers was engaging, there were however some parts I wish were more fleshed out.

Characters seemed bland in parts, not knowing their background much or the part in their role, felt a disconnection between them, that's not all of them, but some did feel as if they were there for the hell of it.

In any game i'm all about the narrative and this game slightly disappointed me, it was lackluster and had a sort of sense in direction, but heavily focused on either building outposts or saving captives, the sense of the mysterious monoliths was interesting but that is the only strength I feel from the story.

If I was BioWare, this is what improvements should be made, have a more condensed map, not so many planets, this is what made it feel over exhausted, I feel that a smaller collection of planets would have suited better, another improvement would be making characters more interesting, maybe have a small cut scene of their life when you meet them and have those points reflected in the game, might make is easier to be sympathetic if they say died during a mission.

Overall, this game has some good elements, but the story and characters don't push this enough, and with the vast open worlds it makes it harder to digest.

There's a long list of poorly done thing about the game.
Starting with the characters, they are far worse than the characters of the original trilogy, way less memorable, some of them annoying and pointless to the story. Your crew (and other characters as well) is just a world's 'cultural' parade. Being a tanned, redhead, religious, lesbian scientist with Finnish name, Arabic surname and super thick Scottish accent will not make you an interesting character! The poor voice acting of Ryder, the protagonist, finishes the remains of the characters' hypothetical charm. Also, a 'Slavic' character speaks C2 English with thick-ašš "Russian" accent while pronouncing his name completely wrong. I'm tipping my hat.
Secondly, the graphics. They're fine but what's wrong with the faces! They look terrible and completely soulless like in many Frostbite games. What's worse, it's their face expressions and eye movement. Taken straight from the PS2 era.
Thirdly, the AI and combat are totally broken. It's just unloading clips and spamming super powers to finally kill those dumb enemies.
Andromeda follows up to M3's trend - decisions don't affect the story. Nevertheless, the story itself isn't that bad. The missions and bossfights keep repeating. At least the levels are much bigger than in the older games.
I'm a Mass Effect fan and I can say with a clear conscience this the worst Mass Effect game.
I, somehow, drowned 50 hours in this game. It kept me playing, worked on stable fps but I feel like 7/10 is rather a very generous score.

I was going to give this game an 8 of 10. There are performance issues throughout the whole game and even though these days I'd taken them for granted, I think they were stronger in this game. There are performance issues throughout the whole game and even though these days I'd taken them for granted, I think they were stronger in this game. So, like many people pointed out, the fans of this beloved franchise, after waiting for a while deserved a better treatment in my humble opinion. However, I think I have to be fair, I noted that in the nearly 70h of my playthrough, the game, surprisingly, didn't crash, not even once. There are many big games, I won't give out names, that though ran better than this one they would crash, I could think of more than one example. Thus, I take my hat off to Bioware/EA and raise this game's grade to 9 instead of 8.

Bottom line: The current build is playable. Though I feel sorry for those who paid full price on release, I think that if you're into Sci-Fi like Star Wars and stuff and really like core RPGs, as it's not hard to find this game on sale, this is a must buy.

DISCLAIMER: The text above is very biased both negatively (1) and positively (2). (1): the author followed the overwhelmingly negative reception for this game at launch, this certainly influenced his experience with this game. (2): this game is literally like a dream come true for the author. While watching the BG series (I won't say the name of this series here, you probably never heard of it, despite being one of my favorites), the author couldn't stop thinking about playing a game that would be like that. Of course, that are pure shooters out there that come close to it, but the author's favorite genre is still RPG, so, in total honesty, the author have desired to play an RPG out of BG and this game goes much beyond what the author had wished. So, it is just natural that the author would fall in love with this game, and we all know that love is blind ...

Bottom line: Is there only one bottom line? Because I'm making a second one. I had a blast with this game, I brought all my characters to level 41 and achieved a full viability for all the planets, there's even a golden trophy for that. Ok, I didn't do it for the trophy, I was moved by that which should be the true motivation of any authentic gamer: the fun of it and it alone :-) This is an RPG and its real fun to play the role of ADAM.

Game has its downs, but it is seriously really fun to play. Story is quiet interesting, game play is good. Of course it has one of the worst face animations of the decade, but does it really matters? I don't get people who rate it 1 or 0, it is stupid.

Intensely bland, ham-dashed gameplay with poor balance, unreliable servers, and a janky campaign. Even three and a half years after release it's still a dumpster fire of glitches and instability. The ONLY redeeming factors are a few supporting characters. That's it.

I m featuring an unpopular opinion here but I liked the game a lot. I never played a Mass Effect game before and wanted to try out when it was on a 5 bucks sale. I give it a 8/10 because it really immersed me into the sci fi plot which I did not expect at all and I feel like the team really put some effort into the world and its details.

Performance had minor issues on my PS4 Pro SSD but mostly some cutscenes had some issues, the gameplay itself felt fine. Loading times were also okay. I feel that the visuals were really nice. Some things like hair and face mimicks are an issue which the game is famous for but I dont think it deserves the bash, at least at the latest patch version the game is absolutely fine for me.

The gun play is smooth. I really enjoyed all the weapons and how they felt, also the customizations are not bad. After all I think the game even is too big and gets pretty repetitive at some point which made me focus back on the main story. Still main mission and bits of sidetracking made me go for around 21hrs and they were enjoyable. Artwork is good and the cutscenes are fine with some minor issues here and there.

For 5 bucks I think this was absolutely worth the try despite all the bad critics. I really enjoyed the game as a sci fi fan.

They didn't. Now, to be fair, the game has been updated and had bug fixes so my experience may differ greatly from others who bought the game on release or in its first year. It is safe to say the game is in a better place and in my humble opinion, extremely fun, with a big galaxy to explore in single player along with a robust co-op multiplayer.

    What I hate:
.AI companions are for the most part left to their own devices with you only being able to tell them where to go during firefights.
.Sometimes the characters hair look so terrible, as well as the textures for them.
    .No PVP in multiplayer.
    .Lack of new aliens.
.No Paragon or Renegade options (I think, have to go further)

    What I love:
    .BIG UNIVERSE!
    .Fun combat.
.Awesome Multiplayer that anyone with a love for co-op survival/hero shooters sort of games will enjoy.
    .Great story so far
    .The Nomad vehicle is FUN.
.Customizing your characters, vehicle and weapons.
    .Fun cast of characters.
.You do not have to pay for anything with real money in multiplayer now. You want something? Play the co-op and make those credits.

I would recommend this to anyone with a love for Open World games, exploration, third person shooters or a love for sci-fi. It really gets to much hate, game is fun!

I tried to play Andromeda again just a couple weeks ago but couldn't find any motivation so I quit after I arrived at the first big main planet.
There are only a few characters I did like and care for.
All Asari look the same except for one or two.
    The combat is good.
The graphics are up to date.
The story is okay but the main missions are mostly the same just with a different planet setting.

Almost like the made for TV film equivalent of what was at one time an awesome masterpiece of a blockbuster. Even the combat is that basic bullet sponge exchange.

Honestly can't recommend spending any time with this game from what I've played so far. Although it may be worth experiencing for under $10. I guess it just follows that trend of once great licenses dropping the ball this decade.

Update review - having just finished the game 50+ hours later I would avoid this game. It is so unbelievably repetitive and boring. You spend hours and hours driving around empty planets on meaningless and disjointed side quests. This game is so boring it has actually put me off gaming. Technically it looks great but its empty and hollow. 30 % of it was enjoyable 70% dull and I mean dull. Do not be tempted to play this as you will finish very very disappointed. Recently I played the original metroid on the NES and I was hooked for 15 hours straight and that game is over 30 years old because it was fun to play. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a disaster. Bought this really cheap once all the patches were released to give it a try. First step, try and make a female Ryder that actually looked like her facial model instead of that horrifying thing they made as default. The character creation was a pile of poodoo to work with, cruddy sliders but finally managed to make her and her brother look good enough to look at for a gameplay.

The scanner is one of the worst additions to the game ever, you literally have to use it in every area you walk through to find data pieces, codex and story mission info, you can't find it or access it without it. Jetpacks are stupid, it's only included because it's inevitable that you'll be stuck in different parts of the map and need it to get out.

I read that the game was initially supposed to be Papa Ryder as the main character. At least that would have made sense as he was an N7 and had the proper training to lead this motley expedition as Pathfinder. When he dies, in no way should the Ryder kid be the next up to take over, you're literally just on this trip because you're traveling with your father as a family not because you've had special training to take over. He had a second in command, who had every right to be angry that kid Ryder took over as Pathfinder because you're completely incompetent in comparison!

The people are still ugly to look at, actually found a hideous troll looking lady on the bridge of the ship and was ready to start making a scrapbook for the most horrifyingly looking people that I could find in the game. There is no background noises on the ship or on the planet or any ambient music, it's so eerie to wander in the utter silence and not even have your people talking. The worst part is that I'm pretty sure I could take any ugly looking animations if only there was a really good story to move me along but guess what? There's not even that. It's not even semi-decent where I could play through the end and be like well that was worth one playthrough. Nope, I kept falling asleep during this game and felt nothing pushing me to finish.

It makes me angry that Bioware was destroyed in such a way. Anyone who thinks that Mass Effect isn't dead and there's still hope is kidding themselves. EA wouldn't even allow DLC to be released for this game and shut down the whole studio who was working on it. What does that tell you? Avoid this game if you value your time and energy.

While exploring the desert planet with red trees, I found myself having some fun but that was short lived and the pretty visuals didn't hold up over time as you have to drive so far from A to B and there is little to do in between of any interest. I recommend a good skip and replay the old mass effects. Expand

A decent game that, technical issues aside, mostly suffers from the comparison to the "gaming-royalty" level trilogy that came before it. Andromeda is not amazing or truly impressive in any way but it is a good side-story in the Mass Effect universe.

While the Shepard trilogy was about the end of all things threat, Andromeda sets a tone for a beginning in all fronts, worth of an adventure. The combat gameplay was hard to get used at first (Bioware should stop to try to use this prime-detonator gameplay, it only works well on a turn based or co-op gameplay), but once I found a style that I enjoyed (vanguard with that shield reflecting shots matched with stealth asari sword kills and superhero melee landings) it fealt good! The sidequests are unexciting and only there for level up, if I knewn that I would have skipped them all together and focused on the priority and relationship ones. Finally, nomad is a great plus, with useful upgrades worth pursuing it. All and all, I hope to see a sequence for Andromeda! Expand

2021 review: So, I recently decided to do another playthrough on PS4 before diving into MA Legendary Edition. I didn't play MA 1-3, so this was a fresh start for me.

I cannot understand why it got such a bad rating? I feel like a lot of these reviews here are not genuine and purely based on hate due to the launch, the hate on Bioware in general or because it was different to what they expected after MA 1-3. But that's not fair.

A lot has been extensively covered, so I'll make it really short. This is what I liked about MA: Andromeda:

    - The beautiful environment. I mean, the worlds are truly breathtaking.
    - The RPG system - it is a roleplay game, with many impactful choices to be made. And you see a great change in every single world you discover and progress through.
    - The gameplay is really nice and skilltree extensive; I love that you can customise your own playstyle and it's fun to blast through enemy lines.
    - Questing is fun and none of the quests felt repetitive or boring
    - The characters, including their loyalty missions, are epic. Some more so than others, but overall I had a great time with them and their interactions between each other.
    - The voiceovers are excellent
    - The story was compelling from start to finish, with some goosebump moments. Unfortunately many questions were left unanswered because they decided to abandon MA: Andromeda for Anthem (lol).

I mean...what do you want more from an RPG? It's pure entertainment, with a solid story and characters. I enjoyed it just as much as playing through DA: Inquisition (if we leave out the DLC).
The facial animations might have been a mess on launch, but they are decent now. Some cutscenes might still be a wonky, but the majority was fine. I didn't encounter any visual bugs or gamebreaking bugs whatsoever at this point.

Sure, it's not a Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2, but it's still very worth playing - especially now. If you like RPGs and science fiction, it's a must to check out.

Yes shonky facial animations and boring dialogue deserve the flack they received but it is far from game breaking. Enjoyable gameplay, a wealth of missions, interesting exploration and a great story have me hooked!

Yes it is different from ME 1-3, but different doesn't mean bad. I like their new approach - exploring and colonize a new galaxy. The story was quite okay and I very much liked the idea of making a planet inhabitable again. I really grew close to the characters especially Drack, Jaal, PeeBee and Cora. The jetbag is a good improvement. On the bad side one must mention the (after years of time for improvements) still aweful looking facial animations. Especially the eye movement is it what ruins their expressions. The dialogues are often very weird and sometimes super creepy when flirting. There is too less main content and too much go-there-and-do-this-really-uninteresting-thing sidequests. It's a pity they didn't include a day-night cycle for the planets. Plants and other ornamental objects mostly have no physical structure you can touch, you slide right trough them like a ghost (I remember Mass Effect 2 already had a bump-into-things mechanic). Generelly the main character never touches things when you interact with something, he just taps on his multitool - this is lazy programming. Not to mention the huge amount of bugs and even some game crashes, I played this game 2021 on a PS5 - I am scared to think about how it must have been at realese date. EA really messed this up as usual but I love the Mass Effect universe so much that it was enough to like the game. In total I enjoyed playing and I think a Part 2 really could save this story. There are so many open questions I want a answer to: Where comes the Scourge from? Who killed Jien Garson and why? Will Tann try to become a autocratic ruler? Expand

The Mass Effect trilogy was one of gaming's finest entries. Bioware, in creating Commander Shepard and his memorable allies in an iconic war against an alien species threatening to destroy all life, took a massive risk in creating a new Mass Effect game outside of the original trilogy. If I had picked up this game, having not played the original titles, and it was simply named "Andromeda",The Mass Effect trilogy was one of gaming's finest entries. Bioware, in creating Commander Shepard and his memorable allies in an iconic war against an alien species threatening to destroy all life, took a massive risk in creating a new Mass Effect game outside of the original trilogy. If I had picked up this game, having not played the original titles, and it was simply named "Andromeda", would that change how I viewed the games strengths and shortcomings? Possibly. During the 30 hours I spent in Andromeda, I attempted to play it, ignorant to the ties it had with one of the greatest game series of all time.

Andromeda is a big game. Its scale is enormous, but it fails to utilise this with anything particularly meaningful outside of the main questline. Lazy dialogue marrs contextually significant conversations, poor facial animations mean conversing with other humans feels a bit of a chore sometimes, and a strange lack of music or ambience in its hub areas means large parts of the game genuinely feel devoid of life. Poorly developed enemies mean there is no real feeling of threat other than in combat, and Andromeda unfortunately tells a lot more than it shows through characters' choices and actions. Andromeda also suffers greatly from lacks in sub-context, subtlety and nuance. You play as a good guy, and there are characters that will help you stop the bad guy. This is fine, if there are multiple layers around it. There aren't really with Andromeda.

Positives? Combat. Combat is genuinely fun and fluid, and the many customisable options mean that taking on hordes of enemies never feels like a job. Andromeda has beautiful, vast environments that you can traverse on foot or the Nomad (Mass Effect's multi-terrain vehicle). Exploring these gorgeous worlds is fun, and hopping out of the Nomad to kick some baddies butts before getting back in and driving off to complete side quests is mostly satisfying. Andromeda just fails to connect this to anything particularly interesting.

Part of the original Mass Effect trilogy's strengths were in its wonderfully realised characters, and the loyalty missions which enabled you to build meaningful relationships with them. Fortunately, Andromeda's cast of characters is good, and getting to know your allies, as well as assisting them in their character driven missions is a real joy. You can form romantic partnerships with some of your crew, and there's some genuinely heartwarming moments if you invest yourself.

The main issue with Andromeda it never becomes better than "good". At its worst, it's average. At its best, it's fun. It's a game that will give you hours of entertainment, exploring beautiful & dangerous alien worlds, and killing its inhabitants. Andromeda is just far too static and slow the rest of the time. RPGs have evolved, and side quests are no longer acceptable if they all involve travelling from point A to point B, killing or finding something then returning. Conversations should not feel skippable, and villains must have either some charisma, or a genuine reason for existing other than being another obstacle. There has to be tension; threat. Unfortunately Andromeda does nothing to really elevate itself above being an enjoyable space opera.

Mass Effect is back! With a proper open world Universe similar to the original, with a much improved combat system. Mass Effect is as fun as ever.

Andromeda is truly underrated. We are given 1st ever scenarios such as 1st contact situations and as well as colonizing new worlds! Ryder is a new unestablished character that we put our mark in. The supporting cast is also solid. Highly

Playable but dissapointing. Boring characters without depth and the proganist just doesn't make you feel anything compared to the great Shepard.

The main villian wasn't intimidating, new species encountered were mostly bland. Mission design wasn't on par with the previous games. the promised exploration was pretty meh. But it gets combat right on so many levels. Mobility, abilities, firepower all make you feel like a super hero. Expand

Mass Effect: Andromeda is one of the most disappointing games I have ever played. This was the last thing Bioware needed after the divisive reception of Mass Effect 3. This was the last thing Bioware needed after the divisive reception of Mass Effect 3. It was a game that was looking to make good on the original vision of the first Mass Effect game, running on cutting-edge new technology, and featuring a whole new cast of characters for players to potentially fall in love with. Despite having some genuinely good ideas and moments, it does not live up to the standards set by the original trilogy. A lot of this game's issues can be explained by its hellish development cycle, but it doesn't help make the game rise any further than average.

ME: A's biggest problem lies within its story and characters. A large scale number of humans travel all the way to the Andromeda galaxy, only to discover that their potential new homes are under the threat of a race of beings called the Kett. As Ryder, you set out to explore the galaxy with a rag-tag group of misfits to create habitable new worlds for people to colonize while also dealing with this new threat. It's story overall feels like a retread of the original Mass Effect, complete with similar plot points, cast of characters and a heavily predictable twist ripped straight out of Mass Effect 2. It makes the game lack its own real identity and just feels like a far less interesting version of the first game. The cinematography takes a considerable nose dive as well, whether it be from the uninteresting way standard conversations are shot to the general technical issues. Of course, there were the infamous character animations which caused this game to get memed into oblivion, and while those moments were hilarious, once they were patched they didn't fix the issues with its overall presentation. The new characters you come across don't leave much of a lasting impression either, save for a select few. Add to that the fact that the game often forgets about technology and lore set in place by the previous games and that your overall choices do not have any greater effect on the narrative (there sure as hell will never be a sequel to this). Even Mass Effect 3 was more impacted by your choices than this. To be completely fair, though, There are a few genuinely fun moments sprinkled throughout the game and a few of the characters like Drack, Jaal and Liam did win me over. The environments in this game can also look downright beautiful. Sadly, they don't make up for an underwhelming narrative.

How about the gameplay itself? Well, I can certainly say that it is the best part of the game, but not without its own issues. The core shooting mechanics are, quite honestly, the best feeling in the franchise. Clearly the most amount of attention went into the movement and gunplay. It feels and sounds great, and there's a solid selection of weapons to be had. You also have access to every character class and their special abilities right from the get-go, and you can also save these classes and abilities as shortcuts. However, I personally never utilized these shortcuts since I tended to stick with a winning combination that can absolutely decimate everything in my path. It's like getting the Crissaegrim in Symphony of the Night. As soon as you are given the best possible means of winning, there is absolutely no more reason to experiment. Unfortunately, the side missions found on each of the planets are not nearly as interesting, and many of them suffer from the same problem as most Ubisoft titles: a bunch of the same busy work scattered about to fill out the map make it seem like there is a substantial amount of content. This game also sees the return of vehicle exploration since ME1 (Hammerhead from ME2 doesn't count). Thankfully, unlike the Mako from ME1, the Nomad here is very fun to maneuver around in. You can also mine for resources on the ground like in ME2 and 3, but its far less important this time around.

As a Mass Effect game, it is by far the weakest of the series. On its own merits, its decent open world game with some solid shooting and a mediocre story. It's a massive disappointment to many long time fans such as myself, and it doesn't leave me with much hope for a future game (should there ever be one). I only have this game for the sake of owning it as a Mass Effect fan. Everyone else would do best to ignore it and just play the original trilogy instead.

I love Mass Effect so that is why I so hate this game. It is doing everything wrong. Story is boring, characters are very deep. Please back to Original trilogy and do something there.

This game is the biggest miss of this generation. I am a huge fan of the Mass Effect Trilogy (I even love ME3 without restrictions). This game pales in comparison. It is competent enough, and probably doesn't deserve all the hate it got, but the story is so forgetful (I barely remember any story beat one year after playing it, while I still remember all major beats from the trilogy). This game is the biggest miss of this generation. Apart from the story, the combat, side missions, and visuals are so generic. The soundtrack is forgettable.
It is not the WORST GAME EVER by any means, and I recommend people check it out.

The game can be fun at times. It seems as if the game was written by middle schoolers. laughable and corny characters. The open world is not too bad. The action, upgrades and experimenting with builds is definitely where this game shines. The romances are piss poor hands down worst part of the game and absolutely unnecessary .

Combat and world building is excellent, facial animations and storytelling not so much.

I played this on the PS5 and the input lag makes the game borderline unplayable unfortunately (unlike the Legendary Edition which is smooth). It’s a shame because the game looks great and the combat should be brilliant (massive upgrade from ME1/2/3), but it’s input lag breaks the experience. We’re it

The story isn't the greatest writing ever but did enjoy the monolith angle. Just playing it to earn the achievements on a different console at this point.

It is certainly not the worst RPG in the world, but as far as Mass Effect goes this is just not it. The first 3 left big shoes to fill, with ME2 being an absolute gem of a game; but this felt rushed and uninspired completely. If you have played the first 3 games, definitely still give Andromeda a play through. If for nothing else, you can get the achievements and say that you have played every Mass Effect game.

Fingers crossed it gets a lot better if another is made.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]
