The game's uninspired and boringly repetitive combat system combined with a pointless loot system, manage to make even a cast as diverse as the Avengers feel samey. Unfortunately the story isn't much better. The developer's focus has clearly been less on making an interesting game and a lot more on creating a ridiculously greedy monetization system and a tasteless advertising platform.

One of my biggest gripes with super hero games...what is the fascination with developers always designing these games where the characters start out either without their powers or underpowered?! If it’s an origins game, that would be different. But this story takes place where their powers should be intact right from the start. They’re the Avengers for Christ sake! Meaning they’re already established!

Aside from that, I am in total agreement with the bad reviews so I won’t rehash what’s already been pointed out. Only reason I tried this out was it was a free gift from one of the game’s sponsors.

I don't know why people are angry over optional micro transactions that you don't need to get and they also need money for the free story and characters they will add. There are some glitches but none game breaking. The only thing i understand people being angry about is spiderman because that is ****

There are some great moments with some of the other Avengers and their respective story lines, but the main story is mostly a snoozefest and doesn't really draw the player in, save for a few moments here and there. But Ms Marvel's narrative is clear it stays focused enough to earn a 5/10.

    Protagonist: 5/10
Ms Marvel just does not cut it. She's full of the cheesiest quips that add absolutely nothing to the experience and she has the most boring super powers where you're literally just spamming the same button over and over to attack. Out of all the characters, she was by far the least fun to play as.

    Characters/Interactions: 6/10
Aside from Ms Marvel (and maybe Hulk too), the rest of the Avengers were actually a blast to play as, Iron Man being my definite favorite. Flying around using Tony's blasters and lasers was the most fun I had playing this game. Black Widow was awesome too with her dual-pistols and impressive melee combat. Cap's shield was pretty fun to throw around for a bit. Thor was not bad, but no different than playing as Kratos in GoW. Almost every attack was the same, the only difference being that Thor can fly. And playing as Hulk was basically just jumping in and spamming the attack button over and over. zzzzzzzzzz

    Villain: 3/10
    BORRRRING

    Editing/Cutscenes: 8/10
There are actually some pretty cool action sequences throughout this game. The ones that stand out are the Golden Gate scene at the beginning and some of the final battles towards the end of the game.

    Gameplay: 5/10
Like I said above, playing as Iron Man was a lot of fun. The rest of the game? Ehhhhhhh not so much. The gameplay just mostly felt like a watered-down version of Marvel's Spider-Man. Where Spider-Man excelled in its gameplay (which was excellent all around), Avengers really fails. The combat feels clunky, the finishers are unimpressive, and it just doesn't flow as smoothly as you'd like it to. And don't even get me started on the looting. It might be the most pointless looting system I've seen in years.

Just make it an Iron Man game and lets call it good. ;)

    Overall Score: 5.5/ 10

-The game should be called Kamal Khan, since she is the only thing the game focuses on and NOT the Avengers.
-The game play feels clunky and button-mashy' from the start all the way to the finish and never has that fluid, smooth, organic feel to it.
-Instead of using movie rights or anything Marvel has ties to they used different actors and faces to mash-up the best similarity they could come up with for the characters and it didn't work well. Like, at all.
-The story all the way through the game including the side quests feels like a rollercoaster that eventually falls flat.
-The visuals can be great at times but dont really hold the game up with its lackluster elements.
-The music flows really well however, the soundtrack I found very fitting.
-The additional content felt forced filled with ads and not very exciting to work towards.
-The combat system felt highly flawed, enemies felt overpowered at times and the heroes felt quite literally the opposite.
-The gear not changing appearances was also highly frustrating.
-The fact alone I had to force myself through the 12+ hours of this game was agonizing,

On top of that the campaign is repetitive with such a basic story it’s just meh. The acting of the characters is the only thing to make the game bearable. Also the loot progression and unlocks is so bad. You can get a total of 64 credits a week. To unlock you’re hero card it requires 200 credits total. So you’d have to work for three weeks and a couple days just to fill up one hero card. The paywall is ridiculous they are super shady. On top of all that the cosmetics are trash buckets. I love marvel to death but they gave the keys to crystal dynamics and they dropped the ball so hard. Cosmetics you’re pretty much grinding for are reskins I mean for **** sake you have a rogue gallery of Avengers hero’s and instead of including iconic outfits they just decide let’s make the same outfit with just different colors and charge a **** ton of money to unlock them otherwise you gotta grind for a year to get everything. It’s a joke this game is trash and the only reason I’m giving it a 5 is because it has some fun gameplay elements. Graphics are no where near as good as say final fantasy 7 remake or last of us 2. Nobody wants a game as a service Marvel game. We just want fun single player experiences like Spider Man for PS4. I hope Marvel learns from this and they let a better developer make a GOOD game. Had the studios simply focused their efforts on making this a linear single player experience with a better fleshed out combat system, this game could've been on par with the likes of Insomniac's Spider-Man and Batman Arkham quadrilogy. But instead they decided to go for a half baked, unfinished cashgrab live service game that needed at least another year's worth of development.

But it still feels like there are levels and scenes missing. It was nice to frame the story around Ms. Marvel and introduce her to people who haven't read her comics, but even with her front and center, I feel like they didn't show enough of her life before her journey begins. You're also not given a lot of time to breathe between missions and a lot of them end very abruptly. It shocks me because Square Enix has been so good at this with their Tomb Raider games, but Avengers feels like a cheaper unfinished knockoff despite its massive IP.

I would say the singleplayer took a generous 8 hours to complete, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone else beats it in 6 hours or less. Only about half of those missions feel necessary and thoughtfully composed with cinematic moments, while the others feel like storyless missions you'd play in multiplayer. That honestly really disappoints me because I remember articles stating it would take 18-20 hours to complete.

I will continue and try the multiplayer because I did enjoy leveling up my favorite characters. The combat is definitely repetitive, but I do like the fight animations, learning new moves, and stringing everything together against multiple enemy-types at once. It's not particularly deep gameplay, but all I really expected was an Ultimate Alliance style game except with a Spider-Man/ Arkham series aesthetic. My only major disappointment with the gameplay is that playing Hulk is a completely miserable experience. I could feel a difference and even some advantages with each hero, while Hulk just feels like an unsatisfying and ineffective button-mash. Black Widow doesn't even have powers but I feel like I kill things twice as fast with her.

I do have fun playing it because I love the Marvel Universe so much. All the easter eggs were really cool and I always enjoy seeing new interpretations of the characters. But if I view this game objectively, it's definitely mediocre at best and downright bad in some places. I encountered a lot of framerate issues and glitches that made me restart the game several times. I get that this happens with a lot of triple-A games at release, but it feels more jarring in a game where the content is pretty barebones. I'll probably max out Black Widow, Cap, and Thor because they're my favorite to play as, but after that, I'll set the game down until more characters and stories are added.

I think that for anyone who is indifferent about the Marvel Universe or to the Super Hero genre as a whole, this game will be one of those that you will pick up, play for 5 to 10 hours and then you will forget about it.

Having said that, I do believe that despite it's many flaws, the people who consume this type of stuff on the regular (the Marvel fans who watched every movie, the people who collect tons of comics, the audience that follows Marvel the same way the Star Wars's audience follows that universe), those people will try their best to like this game and they will succeed in doing so.

If you are willing to give this game a chance, despite the occasional crash, the somewhat clanky gameplay, the not so great optimization or the destiny like grind, believe me that this game can be very fun!
If you are able to enjoy it with friends, than the experience becomes even better.

Despite it's lows, the character development in this game can really make you enjoy the characters a lot more... Together with the voice acting from some of the best in the business and a story telling that can really get you immersed, in conjunction with the despite clunky but still fun gameplay and the promise from the developers to bring even more, if you are willing to oversee it's flaws you can really have some good moments in this game.

The gameplay is not easy... It is not hardcore either, but the casual Joe will have some trouble grasping the fighting patterns. In a way, it feels kinda like a Batman game except you are not so safe whenever you are doing your moves. It can be simple to understand, but it will require some experience fighting with every different Avenger and against all the enemy types (especially when they all jump on you at the same time).

In the end of the day, I truly believe this is the best representation these characters have ever had in videogame form. Not only by the way they look, but also by they way they sound and by the way you control them. Each character truly feels unique and hopefully the characters to come will be as fun.

    [EDIT REVIEW]

The game's crashing bugs have been fixed and I give props to SQUARE ENIX for the fast act in patching this up. I have finished the campaign and it is amazing. Even though it is very short it is filled with amazing moments that looked and felt like I was in a movie. I enjoyed each of the voice actors even though some are better than others (for example: Bruce and Kamala) There are still tons of things the developers need to tackle in order to make this game more enjoyable. Once you get to the end game and you start doing repetitive missions for better gear and power everything starts to get boring very fast. The open world missions are a not enjoyable as you have to jump or fly your way to the objective. The surroundings feel dead unless a random group of enemies show up. The gear is by far my biggest let down in this game. In my opinion it is ANTHEM level bad. I still have not gotten the exotic gears but I have already gotten golden gear and I just do not feel any difference. I love the foundation of Marvel's Avengers but it needs a lot of work and fast response in order to stay alive and not die. PLEASE PLEASE ADD CROSS PLAY. If you are an Avengers fan I totally recommend this game if not I would wait for a sale. At this time Marvel's Avengers is a 7.5/10.

    [ORIGINAL REVIEW]

I am trying really hard to enjoy this game and it just keeps crashing on me. It has crashed already 3 times in the middle or at the end of a mission and it is really annoying. The campaign so far is very enjoyable. Hopefully they fix this bugs ASAP. Will edit this review once I progress more into the game.

Now that I'm 18, why does the game look so bad in graphics? I didn't like the game and it's not optimized, the constant fps jumps. Fights of the same character, well, that's how it surprised me... Played 10h and deleted

    Pros:
    + decent campaign
+ good variety on heroes controls and skills
    + great iron man controls

    Cons:
    - buggy
    - poor performance on base PS4
    - poor enemy variety
    - horrible level design
    - gear doesn't affect looks
    - game as a service is incredibly boring

I played the ps5 version. And I didn't think that I would like it at all, but if we leave the online part of the game aside, the story part was really enjoyable for me, although it was not at the first level, but it was the best game of the avenger series. In short, I can't believe that I enjoyed this disappointing game so much!

A lot of bugs, micro transactions, repetitive maps, and a base loot completely unnecessary. Crystal Dynamics doesn’t understand what an Avengers game has a to be. I MUST SAY THAT I WILL HAVE TO STAY WITH THE THOUGHT OF WHAT THIS GAME COULD HAVE BEEN

The campaign is a fun and good story that kept me interested in the game. Each hero feels different but also the same. There are a lot of microtransactions for skins but they are optional.

I'm gonna be honest if this game didn't have Marvel superhero's then everyone would agree it was trash and not worth a $60 purchase. When I played the beta I got sick looking at all that lag with the frames constantly cutting out every 2 seconds,. It was just explosions everywhere and you didn't even know what you were punching. Another concern I had for this game was all I had to do was push square hundred times for the enemies to get destroyed. It's so repetitive and boring. The gameplay is an overall mess. I watched the story on youtube and honestly it's a low-tier MCU movie that makes no sense. The music is fine and I guess some of the actors did fine. This game is a flop and deserves to fail in every way. We the gamers don't want live service games because there so garbage when they release. Ghost of Tsushima does it better than so many games and that game focuses on a single player. People save your money and buy another game please. Expand

I feel like the game will continue to improve. Addition after more time. Loot system is horrible, I am really getting sick of gear score level gating. Super heroes don't feel like super heroes. The dialog is so bad that it could be used in a classroom.

Hulk surprisingly is weak at times he's like the brute characters of the game. Black widow is the characters that use guns and melee. Once you upgrade her she gets lots more powerful with the high caliber weapon doing lots of damage. Ms.Marvel is like Mr.Fantastic where she can stretch and swing and being the main character in the story mode. Iron man is that one character where you should probably stay in the air lots of the time because the other characters asides from thor can't really get that much hits off of the flying characters. Thor is kinda like iron man but overpowered he's really strong with his lighting powers. Mjolnir hits hard and pins enemies down. But after the story, there are many missions to do in the online mode, and thats really fun grinding each character so you get them to the max is fun. But does get super repetitive like some missions get repeated and they just put (revisited) besides its name so you might think it's new but it really is not. And there are many glitches. The marketplace is like the item shop of this game with overpriced cosmetics that are not even that good at all but asides from the bad stuff that they should fix. the game is really fun and interesting and I would recommend to anyone looking to play a new game. Now the DLC, We already talk about Spiderman but now I'm gonna talk about the others now. The DLC characters have been a leak in past a month ago and the heroes are gonna be Kate Bishop (Daughter of Hawkeye) War Machine (Iron man's Great Friend) and She-Hulk (cousin of Hulk) which I'm excited of all them and this why you gonna love playing them better Than Spiderman
Kate Bishop: now Kate is the daughter of hawkeye if you see in the endgame in the movie now Kate is already trained by his Dad so he can shoot a bow in the enemies and can shoot rope of his bow and can go up from there and do combat moves like Hawkeye.
War Machine: Now War machine is the friend of Iron man and Is like him. now War Machine can use his armor of Iron man but Unlike iron man, War machine can use more weapons including shooting rockets, use a sniper, and a minigun.
She-Hulk: Now She-Hulk is a cousin of the hulk that use his gamma radiation on her, Unlike The Hulk, She-Hulk can be stronger, more powerful, more medium-size compared with the size of The Hulk.
That's all the characters for the Avengers game I know it's sad to play Avengers without spiderman but it will be cool with 3 new superheroes than spiderman for Xbox and PC Players maybe one day we can have spiderman as the new playable Character For Xbox and PC

I've only got about 6 hours into the main story and I would feel comfortable saying that the game is Good (better than OK but not Great). There are a lot of justifiable comparisons to Anthem at release but all in all this is a much netter product. The story and character models are excellent, but combat feels very hit or miss in terms of its fluidity in a given mission.

I had quite high hopes as I loaded up Avengers for the first time, I had enjoyed the beta but hoped that there would be still a lot more to find out, and while there isn’t as much variety as I would like, the campaign is so much fun and definitely has replay-ability.

The game has one of the best beginnings of a game I’ve ever played. You are introduced to a young Kamala and have to find comics through out all the hustle and bustle of the A-day celebrations, now while I know this doesn’t sound to exciting, but what makes this such a good opening is Kamala, she is such a fangirl and personifies what everyone would act like in that situation. It makes the introduction to all the avengers so much cooler as Kamala loses her mind as they each talk to her. This is a thing that carries through the entire game and always makes you as a player think ‘Wow, I’m playing as the Avengers!’

Once this sequence has finished and you have played the A-Day mission from the Beta, is where I start to have issues with the first few hours of this game. The first hour of this game shows exactly how good this game can be with the quick transitions between characters and the awesome character relationship with the endless one liners and quips throughout the early missions. Then it strips it all away and gives you Kamala and Bruce, it’s disappointing that all of that potential is stripped away and you are given arguably the worst of the Avengers to spend the longest with.

This is the part where the game becomes a bit confusing because it’s clear that these style of missions, that are essentially capture the flags or destroy the objectives, it’s clear it is trying t gear you up for the multiplayer but you’re playing the campaign. It’s difficult because it’s clear they want to try and please as many people as possible but by doing so it never really commits to anything. The beginning of this game and the end of this campaign are as good as Marvel’s Spider-Man. It is story focused, great combat mind-blowing experience, but in the middle it tries to ween you into the multiplayer aspect which for me was rather annoying as I was trying to play the campaign not the multiplayer.

Besides the minor detour in the middle part of the campaign and the fairly frequent performance issues, which I wasn’t overly concerned by as most of this game is going to be on next gen consoles anyway, this is a really good game it’s going to take time to see how the game as a service part will perform but I will definitely play this campaign again on PS5.

I will do a separate review for the Avengers Initiative, the long term part of the game, a little further down the line as it’s difficult to see where it is going a week after launch,

Sure missions can get repetitive and the game is, at this very moment filled with quite a lot of bugs, ranging from technical issues, audio bugs and also quite a few frustrating game breaking glitches. Nevertheless, this game features an interesting 10-12 hours long campaign with an entirely new villain. It also has over 50 missions that you can play with friends or solo and a great variety of heroes to choose. It surely can fall on the repetitive side of things with the basic mechanics, but the gameplay gets more and more Interesting with each character as you progress with them. The game also feature a descent amount of cosmetic items; including very amazing skins, nameplate and emotes. I would agree with the fact that it’s a shame the gear don’t affect your look, you mist instead farm units, gather blueprints or simply buy cosmetics through the in game micro transactions. Yet again, I found myself enjoying this game the most while playing with friends. My verdict? You should definitely get this game if you are a marvel fan and if you have a squad ready to hop in with you. Don’t be scare to come across bugs and glitches cause you will and let the narrative experience drive you forward as you develop and get attach to each character! It surely isn’t for everyone, but I think this game has a lot of future potential with Kate Bishop and hawkeye on the way and future dlcs being 100% free! Expand

Despite the beta, I chose to give this game a second chance. I really wanted to like it, but aside from a few single player moments, it's tough to find many redeeming qualities.

The gear and items you collect throughout the game are supposed to keep you coming back, but it honestly feels like a bunch of busywork. From the vendors, to missions, multiple currencies, and menus, it's all

It gets a three for being an Avengers game and that's about it, that's where it stops. This game's character models and voice acting is gross. I expected more, game lacks meat and feels un-innovative. The equipment doesn't make sense, I know it's been used a million times but honestly a robust skill tree would've been better.

Good game. Beautiful game in 4k really. Fun.
    But,
Why hulk doesn't broke shield with slight attack (just for Hulk would be a good and fun idea ) ? This is hulk... the incredible and indestructible hulk.
No mini map. Where are my team mate when i play with ?

Holy frame drop. The prelude is great, but that's it. Don't expect any content as interesting as prelude for the rest of the game.

Destiny fans rejoice, there is a new game for you!

That is my best example I can give to describe this game. It has grinding, reusable content and an endless hamster ring. Let’s begin with the Positive! The story is a lot of fun. It’s engaging and well told. I enjoy how the hero’s banter. I really enjoy the depth of combat. Let’s go deeper into that now. You’re going to see a lot

Let’s go deeper into that now. You’re going to see a lot of critics saying the combat is button mashing and I have to say, at the beginning it can be, but it doesn’t last long. Hear me out, yes you do your basic light to heavy finishers, but once you start unlocking more perks combat goes to a new level. You’ll start mixing in stuns and long range and it just starts to flow like Spider-Man PS4. I like the loot. Simply because you can really make some awesome builds. Really make them your own. Now the bad! Cons. [link omitted per site policy]

It goes deep into the micro transactions. There are a lot and they are greedy.
The loot. Yes I’m contradicting myself. I hate that the loot is only for stats. The best thing about any RPG is getting new gear and seeing how it looks and that’s not here. This is because they want to sell you skins and everything they can. Lastly it’s like Destiny. It’s a loot grind. The missions you’ll be playing over and over again. In conclusion, I do enjoy this game. The combat is a lot fun. The build possibilities are great. But I hate the micro transactions. I also hate that you can only level up the battle pass by completing quest. So you’re forced to play ass all the hero’s daily in order level up that battle pass. It really sucks.

If you enjoy destiny and looter shooters you’ll enjoy this. If you just want to play the story hold off until a sale.

This is not Marvel's Spider-Man or Batman Arkham. This is its own beast. The game was made to be played with friends. Every character has his own side story and abilities and the new character of Kamala Khan is in my opinion the best of the roster. The main problem of this game is in the repetitivness of the locations you visit. A lot of those short side missions is just recycled hallways from the campaign. Boss fights in the Villain Sector are also a bit weird. As of right now there are only two bosses (in multiplayer) and these boss fights are just 15 minute punching until they fall. I'm not talking about the campaign, boss fights in the campaign are a lot better. There are also some glitches that need fixing, I for example encountered two instances of being punched out of the world. But if they keep their promise and keep updatjng and stuffing the game with new heroes and new content, this game has the potential to be an Avengers game the franchise so badly deserves. Expand

$60,00 for a game with this much grinding and micro transactions?? It has good, although short story and nice gameplay. But that's it... Nothing else to show... Really repetitive and dull. I truly hope it gets better with the "free updates", but right now it's not worth the money and time

It's a looter shooter of the most basic kind. You have six slots for gear that upgrade 4 stats. Gears do not affect character models, as they want to sell cosmetics, and they don't have any variety or lore attached, so there is no option for individualism, you are just looking at bigger numbers. The few stats mean that you have no opportunity for builds, no varied strategies, and linear level design mean you are just brute forcing your way through the entire game. The gear system is just to create busy work in levels, to find chests. If they removed it entirely and you just got stronger as you levelled it would be just as effective but remove tedious menuing. They constantly bug you to upgrade and drops are very common, meaning an alarmingly large amount of the game is spent in menus.

The robots you fight are at exactly the wrong level. Too tough to get any cathartic sense of fighting through waves of fodder (you know, how it should feel to play the Hulk), too weak and lacking enough variety to be tactically interesting. You fight the same robots in the same environments, mission after mission, any pleasure quickly fades. The one highlight is fighting bosses, but these are few and far between.

There is a half decent sorry here, Kamala khan is a likeable enough audience POV character, and you can get engaged in the story, simple though it is. But it is not enough to make up for the pain of playing it.

Everything that is wrong with this game is a failure of game design. They allowed commercial pressures to come before a fun experience and it shows that no one cares about the end product. This is not a good idea executed badly; I can forgive that, often there is still something to be proud of. This was a set of unoriginal ideas executed to the bare minimum to meet a need for a revenue generator. I doubt anyone involved in this is proud of it.

I liked almost everything, what i didn’t like was: if you play with a character more then you play with others the only one who will get better stuff is the one you play with, i’ve seen lots of bugs (like hats walking on the ground alone) and graphics are good but sometime they get a bit strange (like characters talking without moving their mouths).

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
