I love the artstyle but am VERY disappointed with the lack of an engaging story, the extremely repetitive and stale missions and enemies, and the few planets you visit. In the COMPETITIVE mode, it is an even sadder story. You can not communicate at all to the competition or say "good game" between matches, and even more mind boggling - you can not even talk to your whole team unless they're on your friends list and you've added them to your squad as well. You heard me right - they thought it was a smart idea to create a competitive team game where you cannot communicate and coordinate with others, only your friends. So much for a connected game. The radar also shows you where every enemy is, all the time. So there is very little excitement and ambushing people in the competitive, and less challenge in the story mode. If other games follow this trend, say goodbye to teamwork, stealth tactics, and finding new friends in games. Expand

Each planet feels very empty with only randomly spawning enemies to fill in the spaces, sometimes a random event will spawn but those can take up to 2 hours and end in roughly 2 minutes...there's no way to communicate with the other people unless they are in your fireteam, no squad commands or nothing, dont come on Destiny looking to make any friends or play cooperatively, communicating with other players was not a priority in Bungie's pseudo MMO multiplayer shooter

We are still waiting for greatness, because Destiny just wasent it for me, we still have Bloodbourne but im still unimpressed by next gen

Some of the dumbest excuses but my only complaints with the game is the story isn't as good as I would've expected and that the Crucible reward system isn't very "rewarding" to players that do good, for instance I'd finish MVP in a match and get no rewards whatsoever yet someone will finish last and get 2 rare items -____- but these are minor complaints and I'm sure Bungie can and will sort them out, but either than that I strongly recommend Destiny, very deserving of a rating of 8. It's almost justified, too; regardless of your opinions on Halo or Call of Duty, they're both immensely successful franchises and a game by the developer of one and producer of another was bound to garner attention.

Unfortunately, living up to its own hype was a tall order for Destiny. It's graphically unimpressive, fails to innovate on any core features and relies on a particularly bland, uninspired plot to push the player through its core missions. The conspicuous absence of universe building outside of a brief setup dialogue close to the beginning of the game is disappointing in a game purporting to be an 'MMO' FPS.

However, it does have its merits. At its core, Destiny is a perfectly solid multiplayer shooter, bearing many resemblances to Borderlands and in some ways Defiance. It controls well, the open-world segments - though obscured as 'patrol missions' - are fun to roam around, enemies provide 'cause for concern' if only rarely actual challenge, and progression is smooth and reasonably rewarding.

Worth playing, but don't expect to meet your next Game of the Year.

As with most mainstream gaming fans, players seem incapable of providing an opinion between these extremes. Metacritic should just use an "Enjoy" or "Did not enjoy" rating system for user reviews, because people seem to be tragically incapable of providing honest, balanced, sane user reviews.

You'll have morons giving a 0 when they can't launch the game, or a 0 due to one small feature bothering them. That's not a 0 folks. You wait until you can play to review, and in the case of a single feature that irks you, you balance your score around that negative and the positives.

Stop embarrassing yourself and other gamers with these polarized extremes. Destiny isn't a 0, come on! It's certainly a baseline 6 or greater title, by any objective measure of recent game releases.

Look at some of these 0 scores. They come from people who gave 10 to the last Call of Duty and 0 to Grand Theft Auto V, or vice-versa. We're talking about people with chips on their shoulders, personal vendettas, zero perspective, or a chronic disability with communication.

Grow up. Destiny is easily a solid 7 for me, has improved to an 8 via more focused play with people on my Friend list, and it should easily give me my $60 worth over the next few months.

Stay open-minded, gamers. Knee-jerk scoring extremes are just embarassing - or outright lies. Consider some of these Destiny users that give 0 to the PS4 version and 10 to the Xbox One version - or the other way around. Why would you trust these people? People are so accustomed to vomiting opinions on the Internet with little-to-no perspective, fire and forget style, how can we expect to trust a subset of entertainment fans with notoriously small attention spans?

GAMERS, let's do better. Let's expose the dumb and review with proper balance and perspective. Help your fellow gamer instead of airing your dirty laundry with unintelligible emotional hang-ups.

C'mon, guys - make a mental checklist of your actual positives vs. negatives, and mold your score around that. I'm going to keep playing and evaluating, holding at 8/10 with future content additions in mind.

The less than stellar story is one thing, but the horribly repetitive patterns of deploying and guarding ghosts will wear you thin by the end of the game. In fact, given the games development time, I'd say the biggest disappointment is the lack of content readily available right out of the box. This is where Activision continues to insult and manipulate the gaming world via dlc releases, gouging additional money from careless users until the next big thing comes along. It's really sad to see this sort of thing happening with a Bungie title, but unfortunately that's what you will be getting into with Destiny. In terms of social aspects of the game, Destiny bears even more letdown. While Destiny was created to give off a large open world social/MMO vibe, Destiny is hardly social at all beyond the ability to walk up and randomly dance with someone. Unless players are in your fireteam or party, you actually cannot communicate with them at all. This completely contradicts any social affects that Bungie may have been going for, and is just extremely disappointing. All in all, this is NOT a bad game to play, however it falls well short of my personal expectations, especially coming from the group that created Halo. Nothing revolutionary here, just another shooter to eat away a few months of your time. Expand

I could maybe see the appeal of Destiny if you had friends to play with, but if you’re playing solo, it’s not a great experience. The game is gorgeous and the gameplay is solid (if a bit Halo-esque), but it feels like a grind after a couple dozen hours. I felt like I was doing the same thing over and over, but in a different locale. I traded it in before I owned it for a month.

The gameplay is disappointing. I think the majority of the missions are "Defend your moron ghost doing a hacky-thingy on the consoley-thingy while several waves of bullet sponges try to prevent you from doing so!". Even though the missions are repetitive, they really didn't bother me at all. I enjoyed them thoroughly. But sometimes if the mission is different from that, it can be more enjoyable.
The weapons and the PvP are VERY satisfying. The guns are meaty and just overall have a great feel to them. I honestly thought there could have been a larger variety to enemies, considering the massive budget and the huge hype. All there seems to be is fallen thingies and a few unimportant guys that you have to shoot and scoot.

But what makes up for all of those negativites are the AMAZING graphics. This game is VERY pretty. The cutscenes are absolutely BEAUTIFUL and well designed. Even during gameplay, you'll come along a beautiful sight that'll put you in awe. The soundtracks for this game, heard in the "SET DESTINATION" hub are just amazing. Sometimes I would just stop playing and listen to the music play on while I occupy myself. The universe itself is also amazing and very interesting,
There's also a great sense of accomplishment to being awarded some loot, or a rank up.
Those are my thoughts to the game, and PLEASE stop with the 0 spam. This game does not deserve it. Be reasonable and do not be extremely biased with your opinions.

I have to admit i am very disappointed with the story mode or lack there of. For a game that cost so much money to make they could have least focused on story. Instead your told to go to point A to B, kill enemies and retrieve some item. Each "mission" i never really understood why exactly i was doing this. the repetitiveness is something you notice pretty early on.

The game is beautiful and the locations made me want to explore, but with the lack of loot crates or hidden objects, all you find are enemies which made me ponder whether there was any point in exploring these locations at all.
I spend most of my time in the tower than in the open world, which shouldn't be right.

All my fun comes from the multiplayer, playing with friends is highly enjoyable, kills feel rewarding, movement is smooth and the customization of the characters and weapon upgrades is whats currently keeping me playing.

Its not a bad game by any means but it feels like there's just something missing.

Do I think Destiny is a bad game? No its ok, is not really all that bad, controls are outstanding the maps are full of really nice details and look beautiful, compared to other FPS style games this one rates high, but that's not all Destiny claimed to offer players. Destiny claimed to offer players a massive RPG style open world that expended over the planets, if claimed to offer us a game that we could play on for countless hours over a period expanding years, leaving us to explore our imagination and image the prospect of a truly ground breaking in a world we could explore and pick up countless side missions, at least that's what we was lead to believe, so despite been a decent FPS with nice maps, we are all disappointed with the lacking these extra ground breaking elements we where lead to believe Destiny would offer.

To sum it up, I was expecting a much more rewarding RPG style world worth exploring, where I could not only shoot my enemy's, like in any other FPS, but also discover tons of interesting loot, explore and discover more in depth lore, interact with friendly NPC to unlock new missions and sub story lines, like you would get from open world RPG games, this is where Destiny fails, anyone who was drawn into buying the game based on the assumption this is what the game had to offer is naturally going to be very disappointed because this side of the game is a non existent marketing joke that appears only to have been created by hype to sell more copies of the game as it strikes the interest of RPG players who in many cases may have no interest in a new FPS, and those players will be the most let down by this game, because destiny fails offer any of those things, the story when thrown at a RPG player is boring, the looting when thrown at an RPG player is unsatisfying, friendly NPC contact is non existent.

The open world is nothing more than a set number of different maps you have to select to be dropped into making the different planet aspect pointless, I honestly think that Pandora from Borderlands is a far better map of exploration than there entire Destiny universe, and there is this games biggest downfall, its not ground breaking as it claims Borderlands 1 and 2 both already gave us a ground breaking RPG/FPS game and although you could argue Destiny expanded slightly on that gene in some aspects as far as the tree levelling system goes and the inclusion of different combinations of body armour, its hardly anything I would call ground breaking, and thanks to its uninteresting story and lack of rewarding loot, if you class this game as the same category as the Borderlands franchise, then its not even the most enjoyable game in its gene.

I regret that most of the quest are "You're stuck, get rid of all the enemies to get out", side quests are like kill enemies to collect such or such item, you'll also be able to collect items for weapons upgrades but that's about it, so no brainstormer at Bungie. Overall the maps need more life, more NPCs and more varied side quest. It's beautiful but you want to see more.

The Gameplay is no different from any FPS. 3 Classes that unfortunately don't compliment each other (don't expect a Borderlands kind of coop where one char will specialize in healing and another be a tank one). It is unfortunate that right away you can't recognize a different class on the battle field. The rarity system works with colors much like Diablo or Borderlands. Their is weapons/armors upgrades available but only on the ones you're using. The skill three works kind of the same so if you want to upgrade your grenade skills you'll have to use your grenades, in a sens you'll upgrade your char the way you play. The loading time are very slow...

The Tower is where you'll get most of your quests, find merchants and kind of a hub to "meet" other players. Using the option menu you can invite them for a quest, check what they have on them but a chat option would have been nice. I started the first quests pretty much alone but as you keep leveling Destiny will look for available player to join you, so it's rare to be alone on a tough fight.

Overall I'm having fun with that game but to me it is still a Beta. So much emptiness in a lot of area, no faction to join, it's great in many aspects and frustrating in many others. Of course you'll get DLCs but the vanilla version lacks a lot of content and ideas to be the amazing game Bungie promised us.

P.S. What the heck with international Video game reviewer taking so long to put online their review, specially after Bungie warning everybody the day before that it would not be fare to make a first day review ? What does it differ from Diablo, FF, WoW and so on ? How much did you gave to everybody Bungie ? LOL

Let me get my biggest criticism out of the way first. Destiny's story is laughably bad. It is honestly one of the worst I've experienced in gaming, which is exacerbated by the voice acting, which feels phoned in and the actors, particularly Peter Dinklage, sound bored and disinterested. There is very rarely a reason for what you are doing that makes sense to the average player. Does this condemn the game to oblivion? Surprisingly, no. Destiny ticks all the boxes for me to hate it but has at its core meaty shooting mechanics, fun character customization, and exploration. The open world may not be as large as Borderlands but it is still quite fun to explore. The game also includes a PvP mode, which is a bit hit or miss. Gun and armor stats are normalized so that the level 5 has a chance of taking down the level 20. This works well. What doesn't work well is the level design. Firebase Delphi is excellent, but all the other maps either feel slightly too small or too big. The only reason I play PvP is to play with more than 3 players, the limit for fireteams in most PvE game modes. Shooting and looting is great fun. The game has the perfect balance of loot, making you work to find the good stuff. Some of the missions are repetitive but they change up the enemy types enough to keep it from becoming stale. All in all, Destiny is a fun, but flawed game. If you are giving it a 10 or a 1 solely based on your pathetic flame war, shame on you. Ignore hype from now on and learn to accept games for what they are. Expand

Destiny is a new type game. It is not right to call it an MMO or an FPS and comparing it in this way is wrong. From my play with it so far (just coming up to level 15) it feels like an FPS with extra widgets and applications added that draw inspiration from MMO style games. I also don't think you will find this much content available in the vast majority of FPS titles.

Personally, I think its a fantastic achievement, but lets go into more detail.

    Presentation
Nobody can claim that this isn't a beautiful game. The polish, from the environments to the finer details on the armour is magnificent and a sight to behold. There are some minor issues (different armour/weapons can bug on cutscenes) but otherwise the visuals are stunning

    Gameplay
This is where Destiny shines. It was to be expected from Bungie but every element of the gameplay is slick and engrossing. The controls are logical, animations are smooth and you feel in control of everything you do (getting on your vehicle is smooth as butter). There is a good variety of weapons (for an FPS game) and grenades/supercharge powers add tactical elements to combat. While there isn't anything new to the formula here, everything works perfectly and playing through Destiny has never felt like a chore.

    Story
Not the strongest point of Destiny. The story is pretty generic but interesting enough to keep you involved. It is let down ultimately by stale story missions, where they do become a bit repetitive after a while. It was also an odd choice to put so much of the story in "Grimoire cards" making them less accessible.

    Raids/Strikes/Exploring
On top of the 15 hour or so campaign there is also exploring the planet. This is interesting to an extent (high level bosses, loot) but it is mostly the same areas as the story mission. Raids and Strikes however are extremely fun. 3-6 teams must beat large hordes of enemies and difficult boss battle. Are they bullet sponges? Yes, but the difficulty is high enough to make it engaging and interesting.

    Difficulty
I think this is often overlooked when looking at this game. I have never felt overly comfortable at any point while playing the game. And I have died a lot during the strike/raid missions. This keeps it exciting and keeps you on your toes throughout playing the game

    Multiplayer
There are two parts to this. Firstly, you can play in fireteams doing any mission in the game, during any raid or just exploring. Destiny is immensely fun with a friend. Better still, if you have a higher level friend join, the enemies are made that bit tougher so not to overwhelm you but not to make it too easy for your friend

Secondly, the PvP. The crucible is a bit bare bones at the moment, and there are some balancing issues. Thus it is fun. So so fun. Because all the gameplay mechanics are so highly polished you can jump right in and have a ball. Does need to be fleshed out a bit more though.

    Other
    -The voice acting isn't perfect
-In my opinion, there is no Grind. Grinding implies effort and boredom. I have not felt this while playing this game
    -Overhyped

    Verdict
This is only the beginning of the Destiny journey. There is already a massive amount to do in the game, not to mention endless PvP and, if you don't focus too much on the few minor issues, you can have an incredible amount of fun. Ludicrous amounts of fun. And, ultimately, isn't that what we play video games for?

It has done an amazing job of combining the advanced mechanics of FPS games, with the loot and economy aspects of MMOs.

There are lots of people complaining out there after spending 100s of hours playing it. Think about it, if its that bad why have they played it for 100s of hours? And then they complain about having to spend a measly $20 every few months to play for hundreds of more hours. It is actually great value for money, and I will certainly be buying every expansion that comes out.

Destiny Is an example of a game where the concept art Is better than the final product. It just goes to show a published can pump in $500 million dollars and still come out with a crap game budget doesn't mean anything a disappointing let down.

Bunjie at their worst, such a shame after a good Halo series. Unfortunately a cash cow game. Worst game i can think of, with DLC thats over priced and overwrites previous effort and time.

Overall, it sucks. Here is why. The voice chat is extremely limited. I did not find this out until tonight. I thought voice chat in multiplayer was a given. It isn't multiplayer without communication. I feel like I'm playing with bots and no story. What good does it do to explore worlds if you can't talk to anybody?

This game is TERRIBLE. Beat it in 2 days and the multiplayer feels sluggish and the maps are a cluttered mess. It's not an MMO fps. There's no exploration. Borderlands did this the right way, Bungie = epic FAIL. Anybody who tells you differently is just mad b/c they wasted their money. Terrible story mode, not enough variety in multiplayer, horrible maps which is surprising coming from Bungie. Huge disappointment here. Save your money. Expand

Excellent videogame, just like the beta. It is really fun, if grinding is not for you and you don't like to explore maps and just go full story or pvp, this game is not for you.

This game has to go down in history as probably the most over hyped game in the history of the universe.

Dont wann waste anymore brain power on this pile of waste so here goes a quick as **** review.

The story sucks, nothing is explained, the combat is okay but all the weapons are the same, multiplayer is just not fun and last but not least this game is gonna die within 3 months period

On the first i found Destiny to be fun and well worth the price, but after 5-6 hours it becomes really repetetive and boring.Every mission is the same, only environments change, and enemy's are the 80% same. Mediocre shooter with interesting RPG concept.

Having reached level 20 I think I'm now able to reliably review the game.

The story leaves a lot to be desired but overall the gameplay is solid and fun. Implementing proper clan support and wider voice chat features is a must for Bungie, to shirk on these was arrogant and inexplicable. If this is implemented I'd change my review to an 8.

Destiny has some problems and it will NEVER sit alongside Star Wars, Lord of the Rings (don´t be so silly, Bungie)... But it´s a good game after all.

I didn't stick to all of the hype, I made my own opinion from what I saw during the beta, I enjoyed the beta, I'm enjoying the full game even more, its been one of the few games I've played from release day for a week, the other game being GTA V, I'm enjoying myself at the moment, and I will continue to enjoy this game for months to continue

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
