Great game, yes it hasn't changed much since MW2 but their is only one reason for this... Because MW2 was one of the best games ever. Uncharted 3 is pretty much the same as Uncharted 2 yet it gets incredible reviews and thats because you cant improve on perfection sometimes people. This is the same for MW3, they couldn't really improve it from MW2 more than they have.

Funny how when people dont like this game, you call us all BF3 fanboys. So what? What they are saying is true, this is just a garbage game. TERRIBLE GRAPHICS, TERRIBLE GAMEPLAY, STUPID CAMPAGIN.

Just face it you cod fanboys. Your getting the same stuff every year.

This is a great game! COD MW4 takes gaming to a whole new level. It's clear that the staff truly tried their hardest to make a game that is fun and influential to the world. They also talk about a really important problem in the world: Joseph Kony. He must be stopped! i'm at the last level, where you're in a remote location finding Kony, does anyone have a hint where he possibly could be????

MW3 is an awesome game with great graphics and a amazing story line. Sure it might not be as good as Black ops but it still is a big achievement. I enjoyed this game very much because of all these amazing things about it.

Loved the game! I've noticed that people have been giving it a pretty poor rating. While it does remind you of things you may have player earlier in the game. It is still a very great game, with nice weapons and plenty of suspense. Being a Call Of Duty, Killzone, and Battlefield fan I would have to say I had fun playing it and enjoyed the close combat shooting.

Hello, i like the game modern warfare 3 because you have so nice killstreak, you have so nice weapons, and of course THE MOAB! Everybody says that the killstreaks from black ops so **** nice are but the killstreaks from MW3 are so much nicer! You have in MW3 juggernaut, Opsprey Gunner, EMP, and so much more. That's why MW3 is better!

But as I massive fan of mw2 it doesn't mean the game should be deemed a ZERO? If you want a radically different shooter then look to a different franchise ....there are plenty around. Anyway now to my review ( multiplayer only ) . The game feel is pretty good as is the presentation. The weapons somehow dont feel as visceral as before and the sound isn't as apparent. Maybe this was to tone down sound whoring. Only time will tell. The different packages are good for different players and indeed different game modes. In game modes where death is quick and easy like FFA then support is great as you get to call in UAVS and such with regularity. It is a pain to see UAVS , Choppers and sentry guns flying in far too much but the game has several counter measures. Namely Counter UAV ( duh) or assassin. SAM turrets for those perky choppers as well as EMP grenades for the sentries. This goes along with the obvious counter measures employed in mw2. The game modes currently are far more extensive and feature my all time fave 'mosh pit'. 99% of the players still play TDM for some reason meaning I couldnt find a game in lonely old Taiwan. The weapons feel similar to mw2 and indeed drop people as quick as they would in mw2 (minus SP ) . The UMP so far seems even steadier than mw2 and the m4 is a solid weapon ( resembling the scar in mw2) . I havent yet unlocked all the extras like bouncing betties and claymore but suffice to say Im satisfied with the weaponry. The perks are solid enough and do what they should do . They offer a little help. It doesn't feel like they dominate the game. The levels so far feel a little clustered. There is a lot of tight alleys and some annoying abstacles. One level has a hole in the middle of it and people just kept getting stuck at weird angles. Id like to say there are better levels if you play larger game modes like Ground war or such. Anyway I'd give it an 8.5 if I could as I love it as a new version on mw2 . I can however see why people would be disappointed in its stationary stance on developing the franchise. Overall : Great but not genre shattering! Expand

Now that's over, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Or Call of Duty MW2 Part 2 to the haters. It was a given that this outing would pick up from the events of it's predecessor and it does exactly that with Nikolai flying the injured Soap and Captain Price to safety however that's short-lived because when chief antagonist Anatoliy Makarov resurfaces and with the world seemingly at war it doesn't take long for the twosome to get back in action. In all honesty the single player campaign is a continuation of MW2, so yes, it carries on the farfetched story but all the while entertaining you nonetheless. In terms of game play nothing major to report the shooting system has always worked and is arguably the best around when it comes to the FPS genre one of which leads to the demise of one of the MW franchise's most iconic characters however for me personally it didn't have the impact it should have especially giving how important a character this unfortunate individual was throughout the trilogy. Unfortunately the people at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer haven't addressed the length of the solo campaign which again comes in at the 6-7 mark and even more so they have failed to fix the ridiculous AI of enemies as they can amazingly waltz by your team-mates just to pop a round in your head! I was disappointed actually by the lack of new innovations in the game as i'd like to see CoD continue to move forward for e.g. a cover system would have been fresh however it doesn't prevent you from enjoying the ride. The one thing that MW3 does deliver on is it's action packed set-pieces and it does it better than any of it's rivals and in doing so it does engross you throughout whether it's a thrilling train-journey under the British Parliament, witnessing the destruction of the Big Apple or even the collapsing of the Eiffel Tower and that brings me to the visuals it's not close to competing with the very best such as Uncharted but it still does the business for Call of Duty. The one area where Infinity Ward and co continue to thrive upon and deliver the goods is the Online/Multiplayer. People had complaints about MW2 and I wasn't overly impressed by it but MW3 is redefined and plays a treat so be prepared to say goodbye to hours upon hours of your social life its addictive as ever. Again there's nothing new game mode wise the usual suspects online like Free-For-All, Team Death match and all the favourites that entertain us for hours on end are there again but now the guys at CoD have introduced Call of Duty Elite, is it a con for your money, probably but what it does is allows you to improve your game as well as compete in year round competitions for prizes and earn XP its not essential although i'd imagine a fair few might be purchasing it at some point. On top of that Spec-Ops returns for a second outing after it proved to be a success in MW2 and again it's a delight and gives the game plenty of life and to top it off thereâ Expand

Friends if you pick up Modern Warfare 3 for the story, or any Modern Warfare for the story, you will be sorely disappointed. The reason this game is great is because of the depth of the multiplayer. No other game comes close in terms of FPS multiplayer. You want a story line buy Metal Gear or Mass Effect. Online is the same as always, long, fun and progressive, but it is sort of the same as MW2 online, (except for the maps). Survivor mode is the highlight of the game for me, what is more fun than mowing down hundreds of enemies. On a map like resistance its quite a calm level where you just have fun killing people, (until wave 26 when you get like 3 juggernauts, 2 helicopters a ton of attack dogs and suicide bombers as well as the normal guys who are heavily armoured anyway). but on a map like lock down, you need to be on your toes as the enemies get harder quicker. Survivor mode is great fun and every map is great.

Special ops aren't as good as they were in MW2 but they are still good, i particularly like the stealth ones. but some missions are just a bit to hard and get annoying when you keep on dying, but still, the special are good.

Yes, it is similar to MW. Yes, a lot of the sounds are the same. Yes the game engine is the same. Forgive me, but why is this a bad thing??? The best quote i've found to describe this so far is as follows 'MW3 is evolution, not revolution.' They've taken a phenomenally popular/successful product and added more of the same. MORE. They didn't take this game and make it worse than MW2 so why give it such low review marks? Simple fact is if you enjoy MW or any fast paced online action agmes you're pick this up and love it. The game engine runs at a solid 60fps and looks incredibly smooth. Granted, in comparison to the graphics of Crysis2 or BF3 it's not up there. It looks better than MW2 (albeit marginally) and runs much faster than BF3, particularly on multiplayer (no screen tearing or other glitches that I've seen so far). The maps seem tighter encouraging more close quarters combat and it seems a little more frenetic; you dare not stay still in case someone blasts you from any and all angles. It's far superior to Black Ops which had a terrible multiplayer in my opinion. Then of course there's spec ops which, either on split screen or online, is fantastically fun to play. It's short, sharp with massive amounts of replayability and some great missions (MileHigh Jack in particular is a blast!) And then there's suvival mode. I read somewhere that this was an 'imitation of the Zombie's mode that falls flat'. I can't disagree more. I loved it, either in co-op or in single player. It's a new dimension to MW and is a welcome addition. There's a lot of replaybility as you level up and acquire different weapons, armour, air support, etc. MW3 is big, it's loud and it's all about the action. The entire package is huge; a 4 - 6 hour campaign with a massive online multiplayer plus 16 spec ops missions and a huge survival mode. I'm struggling to understand the 270 negative comments (at time of writing). For me, it's an essential purchase which represents excellent value and is THE multiplayer experience on console. SCORE: 9/10 - was going to give it 8 because the graphics aren't up there with the competitors but the size of the package puts this back up to the 9's for me. Expand

It is similar to the first two titles because they would be foolish to ruin a good thing by trying to reinvent the wheel (see: Madden).

The natural instinct is to compare this game to Battlefield 3 (due to similarity in game and release time) and I will be one to do so positively. My roommate plays Bf3 on the PC, and, it's true, it is an incredibly polished gem. On the PS3, though, it is slow (30fps), occasionally grainy, and the Frostbite 2 does not seem nearly as smart. MW3, on the other hand, is in its wheelhouse on PS3 with quick refresh, better blended high and lowlights, and better perspective in terms of scope. I own both and will play both, but MW3 will get the nod from me.

I'm reading a lot of reviews that fall prey to failed expectations, not failure to deliver a great game. Rather than whining about it, stop back over by your local GameStop and trade it in for Heavy Rain or Arkham City. You'll end up happier and I won't have to listen to your ill-conceived disappointment on PSN.

Thankfully it plays like an IW game, i know people were concerned about the giant **** storm that went down at IW but don't worry. Gameplay is more important than graphics, but I've got to admit I was expecting abit more of a tweak on the visuals, but it's only a minor complaint. Audio is spot on, weapons feel like they've got more kick to them. So...If you like MW2 you'll like this. People expecting something new, maybe opt for BF3. Or just buy both. Expand

Modern Warfare 3 is fast-paced FPS and really good game. I cant stand those BF3 FANBOYS giving game 0 or 1 LMAO dont observe on them. I have both bf3 and mw3 and there equally good even tough mw3 has little advantage for me. What also makes me laugh are again people saying that this is like DLC

SP is spectacular and breathtaking even tough its kinda short MP is good and balanced unlike black ops.
Spec ops and survival mode are new things(survival mode is) and there really funny and enjoyable.
All in all mw3 deserves IMO 9 because of short campaign and everything else is great.
Must buy for mw fans and for others who wants to have fun and be competative at the same time

This is a spectacular, fun war comic book. Battlefield 3 is like a boring Tom Clancy novel with very little merit. I struggled through that campaign over the course of a week. (nice graphics/sound/animation engine though).

This game is exactly as good as previous Infinity Ward Call of Duty games have been on release, perhaps better, only this time around there is a viable competitor, so the witch burners are out.

It is filled with intense action sequences, making players left speechless. The graphics engine is the same as the others, but this time it is more polished, and there is also destructible environments (Don't expect BF3 destruction). The sound is very good, along with the score and voice acting. Special Ops mode is similar to MW2s Spec Ops. Players are assigned objectives, such as rescue hostages, kill HVTs, recover data, etc. It is a great mode to play with a buddy, but some missions felt repetitive, possibly due to the fact I was playing them on Veteran, which was frustrating. Also, there is a new mode in Spec Ops where players fight off countless number of waves, just like zombies. Players can gain money by killing enemies and surviving waves. With the money that you earn, you can buy airstrikes, support squads, weapons, etc. It is fun for the first 10-15 waves, but starts to get a little old, just like most horde based modes. Multiplayer is what people would expect. It still has that Call of Duty feel, which there is nothing wrong with that. They kept the same formula and polished things that were problems in the past Call of Duty games. There are new modes, kill streaks and customization that will satisfy many players.

The overall experience is great. Yes there are some flaws like in every other game, but it does not make COD MW3 a terrible game. Some people just play online, which I think is a problem with the ratings. Do not make a review on a game when you have not played the full game. Also, it is not IW or Sledgehammers fault that stupid people ruin the experience. Don't blame them for something that they have no control of.

Firstly the campaign, the end of MW2's campaign was intense and epic and MW3's starts with this one left off and continues to get better and better from there, while sometimes it can get repetitive fighting wave after wave of enemies like most shooters this game makes up for that with their intense sequences and amazing set pieces. The stories well done and is a satisfying end to the trilogy running at about 5-6 hours on regular (easy, regular, hard and harder)

Spec Ops- This gametype was in MW2 it has much of the same in MW3 but this time they have added a new edition with a horde mode where you fight endless wave after wave of progressively harder enemies. For the people wondering this isn't much like the Zombie Mode from Black Ops because Zombies had it own theme, story, and Maps from the multiplayer where as MW3's horde mode doesn't. I'd compare it mor to Gears of War 3's Horde mode but in 1st person of course.

Multiplayer- This is really what your going to get your hours and moneys worth out of this game there are a few tweaks here and there to improve balancing but its pretty much the same formula as MW2 they have new ideas that have improved the gameplay like new game modes, perks and new ways to get killstreaks. However I'm disappointed they didn't use the good ideas Black ops had like their currency system because with that system no1 was at a disadvantage depending on what level they are and by not having currency they don't have wager matches any more either which I also liked. So the multiplayer is good and been very enjoyable. also I haven't come across any boosters or hackers yet so thats a plus.

Overall a great game and definitely one of the games to pick up this holiday

When you have been gaming for a few decenia like I have this is a very troubling development to observe and I hope it is one that will end soon, however I am fearful the opposite might actually be true and this is just the beginning of an actual movement of marketeers influencing kids into thinking they have but one choice when it comes to a certain type of game.

Every big release seems to be positioned opposite a different game of the same genre and even before they have been released a battle of words ensues on the internet as to whose game is better, more advanced or prettier and of course the ever present used-so-often-it-lost-all-its-meaning "fanboy" crops up in every other sentence.

What you guys need to realize is that you are not fighting your own battle, you are actively involved in the marketing of a product and are willfully doing the job someone normally gets paid to do. You are not living in world where you need to chose between drinks, books, games, etc. You do not live in an either/or world. You can drink Coke AND Pepsi, you can wear Levis AND Dockers, you can eat Big Macs AND Whoppers, you can read Harry Potter AND War and Peace, watch The Shield AND The Wire, you can play Dark Souls AND Skyrim, CoD AND BF, etc.

It is baffling to read 'reviews' on this site and at the same time be 100% certain the persons who wrote them did not play the game they're reviewing for 1 second but are actively repeating the same lines that have been said over and over again for hundreds of such 'reviews' in a row. The actual lines put into their mouths by the "other company" trying to outshine their competitors.
I want metacritic to reflect the opinion of people playing a game and providing me with insight into their experience again, just as it used to be. What I do not want is to read hundreds of nerd-rage fuelled marketing stooges supporting one developer or another not being aware that their fueling of the fire is actualy equivelant to putting money in their pockets.

    Stop it, now!

Look, it runs perfectly out of the box, you can play it on a laptop 3 years old or a top of the range pc. You can play it on 2 consoles that are approaching the end of their cycle perfectly. It has over the top voice acting, far fetched battle scenes and unrealistic combat. That's what COD is all bout. The comparisons to BF3 are boring and pointless. They both attack the Battle scenario completely different. Battlefield is what it is, a "battlefield". Tanks, planes, helicopter's, they haven't changed the formula since the first one. They are trying to push the technology but just read pc forums and see the problems people are having with it. GFX card companies struggling to get updated drivers out in order for you to achieve decent FPS. People with high end pc rigs having to enter BIOS and disable Hyper Threading to stop stuttering. That doesn't happen with the COD games, you hit play and it just runs. I bought them both and love them both but this constant comparison is just silly and and people hating because it's "More of the same" is equally as silly. After all, how far can they take the combat scenario? You want realism join the army. If you like COD games, just get it. What surprises me is reading the various forum postings about this title on quite a few sites, a surprising number of people pirated this title and STILL moan about it. Unbelievable. To sum up. Most of the posts on here are compete crap. Expand

The roots of this engine (though its probably been modified enough to call its own now) are from ID's masterpiece. Its fast, the netcode is great, it just works and it runs at smooth as silk frame rate.

Just enjoy it, its fun. Thats what COD is about, I don't have time to screw around with the details, I just want to plug it in, and kill **** The tactical side is there when I want it.

Great addition to the Call of Duty franchise. The balance to the multiplayer is perfect. There are no weapons or perks that I feel are overpowered. Rewards you for capturing objectives and not just camping. Matchmaking is fast.

MW3 is by far the better game when comparing it to BF3. Who wants to spawn, run for a few miles just to be sniped then have to do it all over again?! BOOORING. MW3 is fast paced action. And actually, it seems like there is less sniping in it than in BF3 this year. Go figure.

Multiplayer on Modern Warfare 3 will keep you going for years. There are loads of levels, you now have even more reason to spend time on it with leveling up guns to unlock perks, leveling yourself up to unlock guns etc. Plus the killstreaks have been changed so now you have both assault and support killstreaks. Support killstreaks keep track of your kills even after you die, so if your a low level it gives you an opportunity to contribute in someway towards your team.

Spec Ops, and Survival mode also add a lot of replayability to the game, with carefully constructed missions you can play with your friends online or split screen. Survival mode is for those who like zombies on the last game, i haven't yet played it but from reading reviews from game critics on the net, it's apparently the best addition to this years Modern Warfare 3. So go out and buy it!

Commando and One Man Army are gone. The perk structure is more balanced. Weapons upgrades are more vast, allowing you to add weapon proficiencies as well as attachments. The new killstreak system allows even average players to feel accomplished and contribute to the team by choosing the support strike package. There are daily and weekly challenges players can complete for more xp driven competitors. Like in Black Ops, shotguns can now only be used as primary weapons, no more shotgun snipers. There are some weapons from the last game that have returned, but there are tons of new weapons as well. The killstreaks are new and fun to use. Donning a juggernaut suit? There are gadgets from Black Ops as well, with the motion sensor and radar jammer. There are also the new EMP grenade and Bouncing Betty's.

This is a FPS, taking place in an imaginary modern day war setting. How many leaps and bounds can you make in this genre? You're going to have repetition in some aspects. There are going to be rehashed assault rifles, SMGs, and sniper rifles. Killstreaks are not new to the franchise either, but the new Strike Package system is a fresh twist.

On top of all of this you still have a campaign, spec-ops, and survival mode. Video games are 60$, that's just how it is. Even terrible games cost $60. Complaining about this much content costing the baseline price for current-gen video games is an invalid argument.

I love BF3, but I consider BF3 and MW3 different kinds of games. BF3 is a total war simulator, MW3 is more like an arcade style fast paced shooter. Both games provide vast amounts of entertainment in their own right. I play both games and I have a blast with both of them. People who dislike this game so much should spend their money elsewhere, and save their breaths.

Yes, modern warfare 3 is pretty much the same game as number 1 and 2 . Is that a bad thing? In a word, No! Modern warfare 3 is like playing a Michael Bay blockbuster. Michael Bay movies are generally pretty lame when it comes to story elements, but I still enjoy them because of the edge of your seat action. That is the exact same reason I love Modern Warfare. There are tons of moments that leave you on th edge of your seat. I've only played the first three missions, and each one of them had a moment that dropped my jaw entirely. Whether it was racing through a fleet of Russian battleships as they explode around you, or getting a first hand experience of a plane crash, I was blown away by these moments. Concerning multiplayer, I can tell you that it's a huge improvement over modern warfare 2. In mw2 you couldn't turn a corner without being vulnerable from six different directions. The new maps seem to be much more organized, while still maintaining the verticality of mw2. And the strike packages are a very welcome addition. I am by no means a pro at this. So to have the ability to still be a help to my team, despite my less than stellar kill-death ratio, helps those of us that don't always get the high scores. In closing, I'm sure I will be labled a fanboy, or accused of working for Activision, but I don't care. This is a good game, and people are showing their appalling ignorance by blasting it with these unbelievable review scores. The first modern warfare game was fun, and this one is too. Of course, if you are expecting something more Oscar-worthy, you obviously don't know the franchise very well. Overall, it was a lot of fun. The spec ops mode of MW2 has returned with some enhancements. Eat your heart out Zombies, because IW has conjured up the fun with survival mode. It's a wholly different experience when the enemies can shoot back. Multiplayer has a lot more depth with the addition of 2 new game modes, Kill Confirmed and Team Defender. The weapon leveling system is a nice touch, too. The matchmaking servers are still just as problematic as ever, although I'm not getting a lot of lag once I'm in a match. Most of the issue is with getting into the match to begin with. I've also had problems with getting separated when I'm playing online in a party with friends. Graphically, MW3 looks so much better than Black Ops. I didn't realize how much I missed the weather effects until I played through a rain storm on one of the maps. I won't say this is the prettiest game ever, but I did feel immersed in the game environment than with the last Call of Duty. For those who are complaining that IW is using the same engine from MW2 with no improvements, I have to disagree. These developers are obviously learning more about getting more out of the same game engine. Many game makers use the same game engine for multiple outings. It's like saying that the graphics can't have improved because it's still the same ol' PS3. I'm really enjoying Modern Warfare 3 and I can't wait to see what IW comes up with for DLC. Expand

Graphics are improved slightly, gameplay has been fixed from Modern Warfare 2, and the campaign is solid. Spec Ops is also a lot of fun. I give it a 9/10. Expand

I hope all of you haters gave Gears of War 3 horrible scores too. Both franchises are guilty of the same sins... perfecting what they are good at with the first installment of the series and not redesigning a winning formula.

MW3 is a step UP from MW2, especially with the new game types. The graphics are recycled but more refined. My only complaints with the game is the continued presence of quickscopers and the abundance of confined maps (which makes me miss maps like Array from Black Ops! lol).

Overall, if you loved MW2 you'll love MW3. If you are a Battlefield fanatic, go somewhere else. These are two entirely different styles of games to compare.

all the people that are voting negative, what you are doing is wrong! i bet you didn't even buy the game, so... why ruined for the rest?! If you want to vote buy it then say what you have to say.
For the game itself i play it for its multplayer because i really love this kind of multiplayer, the campaing i see it as a training ground to check all the weapons.

I love all the negative reviews! It would be much higher if everyone who is playing the game stopped to review the game on here. I am playing it and love it. A 2.3 average rating is a joke. This is much of the same with better balanced gameplay. Cod is renowned for its smooth solid gameplay and mw3 is no different. They have weighed up graphics and frames per second and have got this spot on. If it's not broken, don't fix it! Great addition to the cod franchise!!!

Honestly, I thought this entry was going to be weak, as I really enjoyed Black Ops and half of IW's staff had booked after the Zampella/West incident, but after picking it up, I am pleasantly surprised with how complete of a package it is. Sure, it may have a "been there and done that feel", but so do most summer blockbusters, and we still head to the theater, the only real complaint I have is that Activision is going to far with the damn map packs, sure they are trying to nickel and dime every player, but to try to pull a fast one with a game subscription, not a fan Activision, not a fan. Well I waited, went to the midnight release...and so far...I am really enjoying the game. Fine, its not as pretty as Battlefield 3, but its still fast and fun. I see people complaining about the lack of improvement of game mechanics...well I say if it aint broke why fix it. As far as the story being hard to follow....I had no trouble maybe people need to have their ADD addressed. The game play doesnt always fit my particular style but thats ok...I'll learn to run around like crazy haha, I'm sure I'll devise a strategy, its all about adapting folks. The characters in the game are memorable and Im glad to see how it all works out(when I get to the end that is haha) Oh and a game shouldnt be judged by mp alone, I judge it more on story mode personally, if it has a crap story then who cares. I refused to play Battlefield 2 for 8 months after I got it cause I hated the story. Medal of Honor= awesome and the same with the MW stories so far. Expand

Lets start with the cons. This game is not as good as Crysis 2. Lets just get that out of the way. Not a fan that in multi-player the 2 factions look the same. Pros. You war with someone in Spec Ops, around level 25 insistent friendship. 2ndly Gun on gun feels dang good. Single player has a lot of variety. It is a good rump. And there are no bugs that I can see, something I can not say about Crysis 2. Don't trust the Occupy-Metacritic-Crowd. Expand

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.

As a complete package, Modern Warfare 3 takes the cake. [Jan 2012, p.67]
