Undertale is an RPG that relies too much on story, likeable characters, and "Choosing not to fight". That's not always a bad thing, though. I haven't even played it, and I know everything already because so many people have spoiled it for me. Gameplay, from what I've seen, is split into 3 different timelines. Pacifist (Sparing everything unless you have to fight), Neutral (Spare monsters and bosses, if you want) and Genocide (Killing everything no matter what). The soundtrack is very good, I insist you have a listen (Only after playing the game, of course). The story itself, as I've already said, is something the game really relies on. In fact, the creator of the game insists you play it yourself before watching a playthrough of it. All in all, I insist you check it out, if it isn't already spoiled for you.

tl;dr: Good game, already spoiled for me, soundtrack is good, you don't have to fight the monsters to beat it, play it yourself, dont watch a playthrough until after playing it.

Overwhelming it's own technical simplicity with inventiveness and deep self-awareness, Undertale is perhaps the most creatively designed RPG (and maybe GAME) every.

Undertale? More like Underdeveloped, because of terrible characters, boring game play, badly paced story, an unlikable main character, and dull set pieces.

A game that, no matter how many times I play, I can never say that "I've seen it all" or that "I know it all", because it would be a huge lie. It has great replay ability and a bunch of endings. Some don't realize their actions matter until it's already too late. My friends in the Internet played it like Pokemon, and then regretted it. My friends at school outright refuse to play, watch someone else play it or even look it up because of the graphics. They don't know what they're missing. Fun fact, they compliment the music I usually listen to, which is from the soundtrack of the game. The fandom is also really entertaining. All the alternate universes people make, the comics and the fanart... Even fanmade songs. I think Undertale is one of those gems that only appear once every something years, and that everyone should give it a shot and try to see past the graphics. Definitely my favorite game ever in all platforms. Expand

So I began Undertale and the very first thing I took note of upon playing it is it's aesthetic. The overworld seems partially earthbound inspired, with largely flat plains of colour rather than the shaded detailed spritework of Eartbound's contemporaries like Chrono trigger and FFVI. However Undertale's art design is even more stripped down, areas being extremely monochromatic and flat.

After meeting one of the game's core characters I'm introduced to the combat system, and for me this is where the aesthetic began to break down. The visuals shift from a colourful if low fidelity environment to a stark black with minimalist orange text boxes, and enemies are 100% black and white. They also aren't entirely pixel art based, many of them bobbing their heads or moving about slickly, aspects of their portraits rotating and tweening. The inconsistency felt jarring as well as pointless.

However Undertale is less like a full RPG than it is a narratively driven game or "walking simulator" with some token RPG elements. The game is aggressively linear, with almost no diverging paths. At its core it's purely a rail roaded tour, a straight line that you can travel as quickly or as slowly as you like, your only real reward for exploring being the dialogue and flavour text of everything around you. And herein lies the first fault of the game in my opinion. much of the game's attempts at humour are purely to take jabs at otherwise established RPG conventions and mock them from the perspective of the in world characters. You can't sell things at a store because of course you can't it isn't a pawnshop and you're selling a used band aid. The innkeeper gives you a refund because you were only asleep for two minutes, puzzles are mechanisms specifically designed and calibrated by enemies as well as referred to as such, a jeer at ancient temples in adventure games being full of inexplicable block pushing and light reflecting sections. The game has a bad habit of finding one joke it likes and running it into the ground before adopting another and doing the same. A game that is primarily a comedy that fails to make me laugh due to repetition is an obvious hurdle to trip over, but I understand that some people found the game quite funny so perhaps I just have a different taste in comedy which is totally possible as I think Home Movies is hilarious.

About halfway through the entire game my friend who recommended the game to me asked me how I liked it. I'd told her I thought it was okay, the combat was good but felt like wasted potential and she said she thought I'd love it if I loved Earthbound.

And this is where I had to take a stand because Undertale has very little in common with Earthbound. It simply isn't good.

UnderTale is a video game that was released for the PC platform on Sep. 15th, 2015 by Toby Fox. There are many aspects to UnderTale and before I reach my final conclusion, I want to cover those subjects.

Developer: Toby Fox is a fantastic developer, who takes the often obsessive (and even toxic) fanbase in stride. A great example of an indie developer, Toby hasn't appeared to sell out (yet), limiting and restricting the amount of offical UnderTale merchandise. While every store on the face of the Earth may carry Five Nights at Freddy's merchandise, Toby tends to be much more selective on who can sell his product.

Programming: A well programmed game, during the time I spent with UnderTale, at no time did I experience any bugs or crashes (that weren't intended by the developer).

Mechanics: UnderTale is a "bullet hell" stylized RPG in which the player will have to physically dodge enemy attacks while being confined to a box. During this phase, players move a red heart, which represents your "soul". While your attack is a fairly standard JRPG turn based attack, enemy attacks tend to be much lengthier and involve dodging bullets and memorizing attack patterns.

While this combat mechanic will start off feeling fresh and unique, by the time you finally finished the game, you'll be glad you are done with it's combat system. Often times, Boss Fights revolve around a marathon, in which you will not even be able to FINISH the fight until the enemy says everything they need to say, which can be frustrating at times, most bosses have a trick you need to figure out to defeat them, very few of them are straight forward fights.

Community: This is most likely one of my most biggest complaints with the game (next to the story). UnderTale has managed to collect some of the most obsessive, often times toxic fans in almost any fandom I have come across. Managing to collect the attention of furries, sexually confused individuals and SJWs, frothing, foaming at the mouths the fandom will defend the game to any end, often verbally eviscerating anyone who has anything remotely negative to say about UnderTale.

This is possibly one of the worst fandoms I have ever seen, ranking right next to Five Nights at Freddy's. Most users seeing I didn't rate UnderTale a solid 10 out of 10 will most likely rate this review as "unhelpful" without even reading the entire review.

Story: I will try not to spoil the game in this part of the review. Simply put, you are a child who has fallen underground, it is now your objective to make your way through the underground, trying to find your way home. As you progress through the game, you'll quickly discover that not everything happening here is quite as it appears to be. The underground has problems of it's own and you can take it upon yourself to try and solve these problems.

The story of UnderTale, while unique is possibly, one of the biggest issues I have with the game. Themes such as love, friendship and dedication are drilled into your head constantly.

You will also be judged based on your behavior while playing the game, which is what my problem is with the story. Kill any enemies and you'll be judged for it. The game acts as if any enemy deaths, no matter what, are a violation of the underground's citizens, completely ignoring the fact most (if not all) monsters are trying to either capture you or kill you.

I find it ironic, even asinine, that the game expects you to lay down your life for creatures, all who have an agenda that revolves around capturing or killing you. Very few of the relationships that you'll forge feel genuine in any extent. For a story about love, understanding and friendship, I found it hard to ever feel a real connection for any of the characters, let alone care about them.

The story is branching, there are three major branches in the game, all which will make changes to the game worth seeing. There are lesser branches to the game, but the content that changed is so minescual it isn't worth the effort of another play through. For these minor changes I suggest just using YouTube.

Conclusion: At the end of the day, Undertale is absolutely a game that is worth your time playing, rough spots and community aside. The game is short enough that you can fit a play through (or even multiple ones) in a day. The price is reasonable and I think supporting a developer such as Toby Fox is enough incentive itself to purchase the game.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

This is a game that *needs to be a game* to tell the story the way it's intended. It uses the medium to its advantage in crafting the narrative. It would lose a lot in translation to a book or movie. It's funny, sad, thoughtful, and heartfelt. Every character is brilliantly written. Gameplay is fun and very different from most other RPGs.

I mean, you could argue something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings is over hyped, but that doesn't stop them from being pretty damn good. I'm also royally pissed that they gave game of the year to freaking Rocket League instead of this game. That feels a bit like the Oscars snubbing Singing In The Rain.

Now, I'm not interested in convincing any of you that this game isn't overrated (its not) because if that's how you feel, I probably can't change your mind. But I am concerned that some of y'all have been told that there's a right way to play this game. That you have to get the good ending to have a fun time. That is a lie. Play the game however the hell you like, and you will have fun. It's impossible for you to get the worst ending without trying too. Making mistakes is part of the experience and part of the power in the story. And if your told that you have to get it right the first time, then yeah, you'll probably be a little bit annoyed at the game. And that's no way to go about your free time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Undertale is a very good game in so many ways. First of all, the game is a satire to all the Rpg's out there. How? This game puts you into a more "real" world. If you play any Rpg, you would mostly encounter the "bad guy" with all his evil intentions and nothing but cold blood running through his veins and only destruction/power/etc. as his objective. But as you play
Undertale, you realize that this game is VERY different. In Undertale you are indeed fighting against "enemies", but if you pay attention, a bit of attention only, you'll realize that your "enemies" are actually good and they have pretty good motives to what they're doing. For example, Asgore, the so portrayed "Final Boss". When you face him, you get to know his story and the reason of why he is trying to kill you. Which are overall good reasons, I mean freedom for your race is a good reason in my opinion. Of course this argument leaves Flowie out, that **** is devil himself(and if you ask why I say him and not her, is because Flowie is in reality Asriel Dreemurr).
Another reason why this game is so good, is how even though has only 2 voices in the whole game(excluding abc_123_a), the feelings it gets to transmit, and how well the characters express themselves is stunningly beautiful. The first time I played, I murdered Undyne, I regreted in the instant she started giving her final monologue as she was slowly dying, how she slowly attacked me, just made me want to go back and prevent it (the same with Toriel).
In a game that looks like Undertale, I was waiting a gameplay similar to FF, Pokemon, or something similar. But as I advanced into the game, the way in which each character has his own way of attacking and how YOU evade the incoming attacks, is just revolutionary. I mean, Undertale is a game where you can win the whole game without actually losing a single hp point(that takes some skill). A game where you interact directly in how you attack(or don't), on how you survive, and it takes ONLY skill to do so, brings such a new way of playing that is so satisfying to the player.
And last but not least, the way it brakes the 4th wall, is amazing. If you play Undertale more than once, and replay it differently to the way you did the 1st time, it won't take long to see that the texts and the game do not "speak" in the perspective of the character, but rather in the perspective of the player. Seeing things such as "I've already seen her die" or how flowy/chara/sans talk to you and tell you about how you reset the game, just brakes the forth barrier in such a way that I've never seen before. And don't get me in how Toby Fox placed the abc_123_a for all the "easter egg seekers" out there.
I hope I've given good reasons to play Undertale, or rather, why I liked so much this game. Greetings and goodbye, hope this review fills you with DETERMINATION

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a game! It takes real, I mean REAL talent to even get something like a 9 on my list. Yes, I know, I have Minecraft, Super Mario Maker, at the time of this review, a 9 as well, and The Incredibles at a 10, but that doesn't matter, what matters now is the game.

I came into this game blind with no expectations whatsoever. Now, just to warn you, I have only fully played through the game once. I have attempted to replay it, but I decided not to finish it because the dialogue wasn't changed enough in the other endings enough to really give it that much replay value TO ME that is which is why I don't consider that a flaw because the replay value in this game is optional, according to the player.

The game is not without it's flaws. The weird looking little boy that always praised Undyne needed more character depth and a less abrupt finish to his existence in the game. I always felt that he could have been used as a turning pont in any of the endings and was cast out as nothing. Another thing that was wrong were the blue signs on the wall (especially during the Undyne arc) that told you about the history of humans and monsters that was either: told at the intro, or told by characters, especially toward the end. There are also certain treasures and secrets that are so obscure, that you have no motivation to find out any information about them. Especially at the beginning of the game, there are certain hints from signs or characters about a random statement that I expected to be remembered for an oncoming puzzle, but I got a little angry when they just turned out to me meaningless jokes most of the time.

On the contrary, there are soooooooo many pros in the game. The humor was great and unique for an RPG. Storytelling was fantastic, I was enticed in every single moment offered at me. The CHARACTERS, the characters were SO well done. I liked something about every character in the game, an accomplishment not many can pull off. Some people found the gameplay boring and uninspired, but I didn't. I loved the gameplay, it was unique and so fun that I kept playing against the same bosses over and over again, even when they take 10 tries to beat (Asgore, I'm looking at you). The music is what drove the game inside the game. It made the atmosphere and the OST was PHENOMENAL. It either made me somber, nostalgic, or pumped at the right moments, possibly the best soundtrack of the decade. With that being said, the best thing about the game had to do with me in reality.

I got the neutral ending of the game. Not that that mattered anyways, I felt like a shameless/selfish monster when I was through with my first playthrough.

I got the neutral ending only because I didn't kill the gelatin creatures, the Whimsuns, or Asgore. THAT'S IT. That means I killed Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton, Muffet, and everyone else. The first three were REALLY regretful, especially Papyrus. I found out he was innocent when his death was just, like his life, a joke, and it hit me harder than for most players. Anyways, when I decided to spare Asgore, I thought all of the killing I did could somehow be forgiven by Sans and especially Alphys (Favorite character of the game, I had a really odd crush on her by the end). BUT NOPE, all hope for anything dies out, and you don't really know what happens to your character, but I didn't care about my character anymore because I hated him/myself.

That's why I praise this game so much in that aspect; it's to give you a strong feeling of yourself. Doesn't matter what feeling, but something that makes you alive. Not many video games claim that achievement.

The game design itself is unique, since nowadays, you won't really be expecting a 8-16 bit game to be one of the most popular games of the current decade. Undertale was based on Earthbound, a game created by Nintendo in the 1990s. The EarthBound references in Undertale are a bit heavy, but most people think its fine. I also love how there are 3 different routes, and how it's ultimately the players decision, to kill, or not to kill.

Undertale is worth your 10 bucks. That's all I have to say.

Undertale is a kind of game that is surprising in its depth. I persisted, playing an hour here and there. Once I had beaten Undyne and around about the time of Mettaton's arrival, I started getting into it. By the time I met Asgore, my tune had changed. I understood what the fuss was about. The emotional payload pierced me, and I thought, actually this is very good.

I can't say it's a great game, because I didn't really enjoy playing most of it, but I have to say, it's great when it finally engages. There's a lot in it that missed with me more than hit.

Constantly holds your attention and occasionally surprises/betrays your emotions with twists. It’s a story game that is about humans and monsters, Frisk/your character fell down a hole underground and ends up finding friendly and evil monsters.

Undertale’s graphics fit the game pretty well! It meant to be like a old like game, with the pixels and moving very little. There are some animations like when you're in Undyne’s house and Papyrus jumps out the window. The background music is very peaceful and can turn intense VERY fast. My favorite music is the snowden music because it's peaceful and calming.

I fell in love with the story line in Undertale and not just that, EVERYTHING! The music, characters, sound effects, and more! Everything they did just fits the character so well. For example, Flowy! Flowy looks like a nice kind flower but on the inside he is a evil monster. He tries everything to get Frisk to kill every monster, but other monsters persuade you to take the better path! You can take the good path or the evil path, What will YOU choose?

Undertale was, without a doubt, the game I heard the most about in 2015. It was praised as being the pinnacle of storytelling and a new and exciting game that surpasses all others that year. I... disagree, and before the hate comes rolling in, allow me to explain myself.
First off, the games pacing. Undertale keeps great pacing for most of the game, and is exciting and well driven by its characters. However, the games pace slows to a grinding halt in the third act, when your thrown into a volcano and get stopped every 5 seconds by a "lol so nerdy" scientist. THIS SECTION DESTROYS THE PACING. This game has so many amazing scenes and set pieces, and comes crashing down at this one spot.

Next, the characters. I wont lie, this game has so amazing character development. Characters are complex, interesting, and well made. My biggest complaint comes in undyne, a fish women who, after I fought, crawled away. I shrugged this off but after completing the game and looking up videos found this character has a whole side quest, completely unknown to me that in order to find required you to backtrack to a specific village and have a conversation with.

Speaking of side quests, they seem oddly out of place in a game like this. A game like this feels like it should be alot more focused and the characters should be more involved. This is done fantastically with the skeletons, but all other characters seem to lack this focus. I didn't look for side quests when I played, and I ended up missing a couple of interesting areas.

Now for the game play. Its oddly enough a bullet hell, and works fairly well as one. the morality system is well made, but can be confusing in certain fights that require a very specific pattern in order to succeed, and some that you don't know if you need to keep talking to or if there is another solution to the problem (undyne and toriel come to mind). Its a good system though, and the morality system is very interesting.

I wont say much about the music. It is without a doubt the best part of the game. lots of memorable tracks that are either cozy and fitting, or well suited for the boss battles. easily a 10/10 soundtrack.

It feels shallow to say a game is bad because of the hype, but I do think the hype has taken a lot away from undertale. If you mention you plan to play it you will get a detailed map from the fanbase on what route to take, where to walk, how to spend your money, etc, etc. This game will be a lot better in a couple of years when hype has gone down and people can play the game blind.

In conclusion, expect a game that does a great job at making the characters, has a fun combat scheme that would get boring if the game lasted longer than it does, and a soundtrack that makes you remember how good retro music can be. Its by no means bad, but try not to buy too much into the hype. Besides, it wasn't event the best rpg maker game of 2015 (Lisa)

This game (for all intents and purposes a passion project of a single developer) takes the classic RPG experience and scrutinizes everything about it. Every character archetype and every game mechanic that you'd expect to see in a classic RPG title is picked apart and flipped head-over-heels, sometimes subtly, but often in mindbogglingly creative ways.

Everything in the game feels purposeful and inspired; no lame fetch quests, grinding or other filler content here. The story itself is relatively short, likely spanning only single-digit hours, but the branching story, the multiple endings and the creative deconstruction of the SAVE/LOAD mechanic makes for a lot of replay value. Though the bulk of the story is laid out for the player over the course of a few main routes, there's also a lot of hidden content beneath the surface. If you want to know everything the game has to tell you without consulting a wiki, it's going to take some serious digging.

I was one of the lucky few who got to play this game before it came to its ridiculously large popularity. I didn't get anything spoiled for me. I did not know anything of what to expect in this game, other than that I would be trying to not kill anyone in the game, seeing as it was one of its selling points. I did not know anything about the characters I'd meet, and the surprising amount of depth to the game. I did not know the experience that I would be in for.

And honestly, that's really the best way to play this game.

Doing so brings us back to the old days before everything was on the internet in 5 minutes, where there were never any surprises anymore, where every new game we played as kid was like a new adventure for us, filled with wonder and amazement, wondering what was going to happen next or what else we could do in those games.

    CONTROL/MECHANICS = 9
I do not like Role-Playing Games. Walking Simulator games are validly criticized for having all the interactivity of pressing the "Play" button on a DVD, an experience that could be faithfully recreated by watching a full-length playthrough on Youtube (with branching extra Youtube videos to click on if you make alternate choices in the game). By that standard, RPG's are sequences of Youtube videos where you must roll dice to see if you get to watch the next video or must restart and roll again. All of the "gameplay" is accomplished internally by the RPG's random number generator, your nigh-omnipotent gaming PC wasted rendering what is essentially a card game with a coat of paint over it. I remember playing Final Fantasy on the original NES and thinking that the lack of gameplay was a concession to the limitations of the hardware against rendering more action, and that the RPG style of game would die out in future generations, and to this day I still can't believe I was wrong about that.
Fortunately, Undertale is not an RPG. The core gameplay is moving your character's heart icon out of the way of enemy attacks, like a Bullet Hell shooter where you can't shoot back, to avoid taking damage. Cleverly, each enemy type has different but character-specific attack patterns to learn and adapt to.
In between each defense, you have the option of either attacking or talking to the enemy. Talking is kind of like a conversation puzzle where you try and figure out which of the options is having the right effect, until the enemy is willing to surrender on request.
Attacking is, frankly, disappointing, the same timer minigame every time, pressing "Z" when the line crosses the exact center, like the field goal mechanic in "NFL Blitz 2001". You'll try it a few times, then give up because the conversation tactic is more interesting. Even the Mario RPG series had several attack patterns you could try.
There are also a few puzzles in the overworld which are nice distractions.

    PRESENTATION = 7
The game is rendered in NES-style graphics, with references to alot of games I never played (again, not an RPG fan). It works, but it would have worked better with modern graphics. There are 2D physics in some of the puzzles.
The plot is really excellent, very self-aware and genuinely cognizant of the failings of similar types of games (i.e., it mocks tutorials sort of like "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon"). Disappointingly, and annoyingly, none of the dialogue is voiced. This game was made in 2015, not 1985, and “homage” only goes so far in excusing the failures of having an insufficient development budget.

    DESIGN = 7
The game is linear, but stays engaging throughout its 6 hour runtime, largely because the enemy attack patterns changed, but also because I could never quite predict what would happen next.
Attacking enemies, however, suffers from the major flaw that if you befriend enemies through conversation, you only get money to buy healing items; but to keep attacking the progressively higher-level enemies without missing, you need to level up, which can only be done through the violent option. So you can't switch back and forth, which inevitably funnels you towards the talking option and the nonviolent ending.
But, overall, Undertale earns its 9 for staying fun and providing a unique experience with entertaining dialogue. It might have gotten a perfect 10 if it hadn’t chained its presentation to the 1980s and if there were more minigames for attacking the enemies.

I don't have the words to describe how amazing Undertale is. The music, the characters, the story... it's all so perfectly crafted. I personally like the bullet hell mechanics in combat, but even if you don't, I still feel that it's worth playing just for the story.

I guess I can see why people like this game so much, but personally I have found most parts either boring or frustrating. I received Undertale as a surprise Christmas present from my brother, whose only comment on the game was that it's "really good". I received Undertale as a surprise Christmas present from my brother, whose only comment on the game was that it's "really good". Other than his two-word review, I knew absolutely nothing about the game or the high praise it received from most reviewers and players.

This is probably the best way to experience a game like Undertale, as much of its WOW Factor supposedly relies on the story and how the player interacts with the game's world or characters. Whether heart-breaking or hilarious, most of these parts are well executed. The major problem is that the bulk of the game, puzzle solving and RPG elements, tend to be awfully boring and repetitive. Puzzles which take place outside of battle are very uninspired and mostly seem to be a case of trial and error, or repeating a certain pattern. Those which do occur in battle sequences are funny at first, but quickly wore thin when I realised I had to repeat the same process several times depending on which enemy I encountered. I have not even been able to force myself to complete one play through. Some people may say that I since I haven't completed the game I shouldn't be writing a review, but if the game truly bored me to the point at which I no longer want to play it, then I regard that as a serious problem.

Undertale is quite short, so I've heard, but since player choices influence the story, several different endings and outcomes can arise from in-game decisions. While this may seem like a good idea on paper and works well in other games, for me it just created a sense of constant paranoia. The game constantly usurps common assumptions and tropes of the RPG-genre, and this sometimes works to humorous effect. However, that also means it is not clear which decisions will influence the play-through, which decisions won't, and which decisions actually have a required answer/action in order for the story to progress. Of course, it would be easier if it were possible to predict the consequences of your actions, but in a fantasy, convention-defying world such as the one presented in Undertale, doing so is extremely difficult. But! If I make a mistake, then surely I can just reload my old save file, and start the section over, right? Wrong! Undertale actually remembers if you reload your file in some cases, so whether you like it or not, you may be stuck with the adverse effects of a previous mis-click or accidental push of a button for the entirety of your playthrough. All-in-all I found this choice-making aspect of the game very flawed and more frustrating than enjoyable.

That is not to say Undertale is all bad, not in any sense, and '6' is not a bad score. The music is absolutely superb. Although, I found the retro style graphics and music clash with pieces that are more orchestral. The game really does ooze atmosphere despite its graphical style. Furthermore, regular enemy encounters are great fun the first time around, and most of the Boss Battles are so ingeniously hilarious or touching that I would still recommend you give the Undertale a try. It really does show some innovative game design, and the interactions with the main cast of characters are the most enjoyable part of the Undertale for me. Unfortunately, it is the dull process of getting to the good parts that takes up most of the game. I also find the game's story and pacing to be very slow, which is fine if the game play is fun, but it most cases it just isn't. Furthermore, once you've figured out the trick to beating a certain boss or enemy, having to repeat the process if you die can feel very repetitive. Not every joke or fourth-wall breaking effect is funny and sometimes rub off as rather annoying. The level of importance or outcome of different decisions is never really clear until it's too late, and in my opinion this takes away most of the fun that should have come from these segments.

Overall, Undertale is a great, but seriously flawed, game that I would recommend to fans of RPGs. As someone who loved Chrono Trigger, a superb RPG with multiple endings, and also story-driven games like Ace Attorney, I'm disappointed I don't love this game as well. Unfortunately, for me, Undertale's gameplay is rather lacklustre is most parts, and there are not enough occasions when the game is engaging or fun. Maybe it suits you down to the ground like the hundreds of others who gave this game 10/10, just be aware it might not be for everyone

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Undertale is charming, to boot, with likable characters and entertaining slapstick, but it's also emotionally controlling. That being said, it's not perfect.

There are two main choices that appear when you encounter an enemy: Fight and Mercy. I guess this is what most call the 'gimmick,' of Undertale. Depending on which you choose, your ending will be dramatically changed. Choosing to fight and grind is frowned upon by the fanbase, and even the characters in the game. If you choose to kill every encountered enemy, and even hunt them down just for experience, you will get the Genocide ending. It's just as it sounds. You kill everything, villages are evacuated, and Gold, the world's currency, is useless because even the shops are abandoned. You are treated horribly, and to put it bluntly, just like a mass murderer.

But then there's the Pacifist route. You get a lighthearted feel, jokes, puzzles, and make a few weird friends along the way. To get the Pacifist ending you have to somehow spare every monster you run into, often by flirting, and you'll be rewarded by what fans call the 'True ending.' This is the best ending, by far, because you, along with your friends, return to the surface.

There are a few negatives though, as a few characters aren't ideal. The best characters in my opinion are the goat family and the skelebros. The graphics can't compare with the average games, though, but it fits the feel better than 3D graphics would. Depending on what kind of person you are, the comedy might be cringy and unfunny, and the OST might be repetitive to you. But really, it's all subjective.

If you're looking for a different game with decent characters, by all means, get it. 10$ really isn't all that much compared to loads of other games like this one.

The biggest problem with the puzzles is that they were all set up in such a way that you needed a hint to solve them, but once you read the hint (which is always sitting conveniently next to the puzzle) the solution was obvious. In all but one or two of the Legend of Zelda games, the puzzles were either just laid of in front of you for you to figure out, or if there was ever any kind of hint or unknown solution, you had to explore further to find it. Perhaps it is unfair to compare two games of different genres, but the point is that there was nothing interesting let alone captivating about the puzzles. All they did was make the game slightly longer.

The story carries the game along with the level of control the player has over the story. Without the ability to choose how you want the story to go, this game would be bland. With that aspect, it is above average, but that's about it.

I heard the buzz I saw the screenshots and I thought "this game must really be something because these graphics don't do anything for me." Not that good graphics are necessary but I didn't even like the art style. Yellow Simpsons-esque character with a terrible haircut and a pink and blue stripped shirt? ehhh. Not that good graphics are necessary but I didn't even like the art style. Yellow Simpsons-esque character with a terrible haircut and a pink and blue stripped shirt? ehhh. So I played the game and the strangest thing happened. I found myself liking my little terrible style kid protagonist. I liked the enemies. I liked the characters. The game charmed me and usually a large part of a games charm is it's graphical style. This game charmed me solely with its personality. Great writting, great inventive use of interacting with the world, and with so little graphics the game is able to convey emotion and tone so well it amazes me.

Gameplay wise it plays like a jrpg except when an enemy attacks you have a little 5 second mini game that allows you to dodge it and the mini games change a lot never becoming stagnant and predictable. You also can talk to your enemies down from fighting. You can run the game through without killing anybody and I suggest you do actually because the characters are so great and there is so much to see with them alive. There are puzzles which really are just a way of slowing your progression down a tad bit to extend the game.

I highly recommend this game. I honestly thought this game would be another critically hyped game that is good not great but due to it's uniqueness gets more praise than it deserves. This is not one of those games. It is truly a masterpiece of a game.

Undertale is absolutely unique. It's a RPG masterpiece full of weird characters and a moving message.

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
