Toby Fox has developed an instant classic that not only has fantastic characters, but also an interesting story and multiple different ways to play that'll definitely keep players coming back. It'll make you both laugh and cry and the best possible ways. Not to mention it has some of the best gaming music of the generation.

Games like Undertale make you feel like you exist, and invite you to think of others as a complex living being like you, rather than just numbers.

    Pros:
    - Every character (enemies included) feels unique and important. No generic goblins or shopkeepers you usually get from normal RPGs.
    - The narrative is impressive. There are so many conflicts surrounding everything it feels touchable.
    - The music is amazing. It really adds to all situations.
    - All good games are all about the player. Undertale is a good game.

    Cons:
    - Gameplay-wise, you feel weightless in some battles, specially some boss battles. Some are just about re-choosing the same option, reading through the enemy's dialog and enduring the battle.
    - Some visuals aren't pleasant (it's more understandable considering this is a work from a single person, but it's still a fact).

Every character is special in undertake there not gimmicky they all can bounce off each other whether it's sans making jokes at papyrus expense whether it's papyrus wanting to be in the royal guard and undyne wanting to keep him out of harms way and when the characters die it feels real very early have I come close to crying in a video game but I'm not going to act like this game is better then it is the graphics are good at best it could probably be run on a toaster with enough optimization and tweaking if they wanted to but this game is amazing that soundtrack though it complls you into the current situation after you always feel terrible after you kill someone in undertale even if there not a main character in my gaming experience never have I ever felt genuinely like trash when I kill a little frog In a video game you can tell each character even side characters has a genuine life and freinds and a personality there is never a flat. Character that doesent have some sortve belief you can explain most of the characters personalitys in a couple of seconds because of how simple the characters are even more advanced characters can be explained easily in a couple of seconds besides chara which is bassicly the player your the one who is making these decisions your the one controlling the character making these decisions it's almost as if every life you take your character is doing against there will and they provide a reason for you respawning known as resetting little things like that gives games like undertale more life and its hardware compatibility is insane that's what I meant when I said you could run undertale on a toaster But one problem with the game is the run time the run time of this game is almost tragic with being able to complete all routes of the game in less then 15 hours while taking my time and I'd say 2 hours of that was from fighting sans and that leads to another pro the boss fights are acctually hard and aren't easy you feel accomplished once you beat the genocide route but somehow seemlessly they make it more rewarding to complete the pacifist route even though that's the easiest version of the game there's no hard or easy mode it's just an adventure and I know everyone is so tired of the "it's an immersive adventure" type of phrase but it's the truth the graphics aren't bad acctually because of the art style it meshes well with the world and makes it infinitely more enjoyable for me At the end of the day this game will not knock anyone's socks off but it's so great to just relax of course you will never be able to relax when your in a boss fight but just sit down with your keyboard and mouse and enjoy the ride this game set up so many things to worry about I just gave up on keeping track I just decided you know what Toby fox? Take me where you want to go because attempting to keep track of all the potential interactions and scenarios is a idiotic move your meant to just sit there and enjoy tha dang ride because there are so many different things I have not touched the surface of the surface of details in this game in the average review but I hope I painted a picture for how amazing a creation Toby fox made Expand

The game is filled with so much charm & character and takes such a unique approach to the RPG format, which made me fall in love with it. I don't think I've found a single game which has made me feel how Undertale made me feel when I finished playing through it; it really is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of game.

Undertale is more than a typical JRPG game. Even though, its not only an "JRPG". It has "Puzzle, Adventure, Rpg, JRPG, Action" and more genres on it. So; from ARK players to GTA V players, every body can find something good on it. It has like 7-8-9 gameplay hours minimum. Think now; you are playing a in 10 hour finishing game, and there is more than "6" boss fights. Game never repeats it self, so boss fights nevers bores you because of that. What more is you can thing 10 hours is a short gameplay time for an RPG game, but epic story makes you full. And there is like 7, or 8 different endings and that makes the gameplay time about 70 hours. Undertale will make you cry, Undertale will make you laugh. I maded a stupid thing, and played this game in this summer. I was kinda bored and got awayed from the games, and camed back like one year ago. I was dont knowing why I passed away for a little, but Undertale reminded me why: Because i was bored of seeing the same things again and again. With undertale, i reminded how its feels like to play an "Art", like Half-life. It has a lowerprice on steam. So you should get it now and play. You will not lose a thing.

So; is there nothing bad about this game? Yes there is:

    • Like i said, it has so many different genres on it, but if you dont like even one of them, you can get bored because every single genre has a big part in the game. This is the disadvantage of having this much genre in one game. I had that problem in puzzles, i dont like and cant do puzzles even in games so that little puzzles tooked a little bit more time.

    • Game sometimes gets pyscho. Exactly "Flowey". When you saw flowey boss fight(good ending, after last boss fight-boss fight) after that lovely world; trust me, you can scare a little bit.

Thats my thoughts about "Undertale". I hope it could help you..

The style and the characters/dialogues are fairly childish (JRPG-style, basically, although a lot of games in that genre also try to be more mature). The plot is imaginative enough overall, though.

When my little brother told me about this game, I'll admit I was a bit skeptical about the premise at first. A gamer's first instinct is to defeat anybody threatening them in a game, after all. (Like real life, lol.)

But I watched a Let's Play on YouTube and eventually played it, and I gotta say:
This game holds the honor of being the first game to ever make me cry.
Not to mention that it's a fantastic game that is worthy of the all the accolades it gets by fans, critics and other game companies.
    "Why?" You may ask.
Well, let's break down every aspect of the game, shall we?

    Plot And Storyline
This game has a deceptively simple plot and two basic paths that connect it.
You play a child who has fallen into a deep underground cave that is full of monsters, from talking dogs and goatlike monsters to skeletons, spiders, ghosts and other quirky denizens of the caverns.
Do you decide to befriend them, and help them out on the Pacifist run? Or do you slaughter all of them in the Genocide route, and lay waste to all your supposed adversaries?
The choice is yours, but the consequences could be dire.
This premise is actually clever, with both heartwarming and heartbreaking plot points and a wonderful, zany cast of characters to get to know.

    Gameplay
Though a simple turn-based RPG, it has a surprisingly deep gameplay style.
Sure, you can kill everything standing in your way, but you have the choice to go through the game without killing anyone, instead befriending the lovable characters.

    Graphics
This pixelart game may be done in styles similar to both 8-bit and 16-bit games, but both the environment and characters inhabiting it are delightfully created and exude their varied personalities.

    Sound Design
Toby Fox happened to create a game with a wonderful soundtrack. From the epic tracks like "Spear Of Justice", "ASGORE" and this games rendition of Toby Fox's "Megalovania", to the humorous "Bonetrousle" and to the heartbreaking song "Undertale", this game has a soundtrack that is hard to top.

    In Short
This game has made me laugh, get shocked, and even holds the honor of being the first game to ever make me cry.
It has wonderful, quirky and lovable characters like Sans and Papyrus, Asgore and Toriel and many others that have me praise this game and Toby Fox himself.

    My Rating
Now like most game reviewers, I have a rating system from 1 to 10.
However, that similarity is where it ends.
Unlike other game reviewers, I have a rating system that's backwards.
That means that 1 is actually the best, while 10 is really the worst.
It's kinda like racing: You want to finish first, but don't want to finish last.

    Final Thoughts
This game is a wonderful, beautiful game that has many secrets and surprises in store, and is jam-packed with emotion.
From the cast of characters to the music and everything else, this game is the definition of empathy and storytelling for PC, PS4, XBONE and Switch.
Rating: 1/10 (1 being the best.)

Main review: This game is a masterpiece, some people bash on it for the pixelated graphics, but I honestly love them. The gameplay is also amazing, the fights blend in perfectly with the story, can be funny, or can reveal lore about characters, and they're fun as hell. Characters: this is the best part of the game, every character is can be either charming, funny, or down to earth, there some characters that are all 3 of these (sans, asriel), this game has some of the best if not the best characters in gaming history. Story: the main goal of the game is simple: get out of the wacky world known as the underground. But the story gets way more complicated as you go, you learn about the past of the monsters, their intentions, and you learn about tragedies. Something else is that there is 3 main paths, the neutral, pacifist, and genocide. If you finish all 3 paths, you will know just about everything in the game. I was going to give it an 8 because of the community, but I refrained because that's not the developer's fault.

Aging: Generally, this game aged well, but the thing is it's not replayable when you finish every path, but I understand this game was a 1-time experience. Finally, the sequel, eh, not as good, but ok.

While its gameplay mechanisms are unique, creative, and solid enough for the first few playthroughs, they are significantly flawed, and their flaws compromise the overall gameplay and replayability. Still, I recommend this game to anyone who loves a good story and is not too obsessed with replayability and the sort.
Below is a more detailed analysis.

    Positives:
+ An overall light-hearted story about love, peace and forgiveness. More mature and disturbing aspects also exist, making the game more interesting.
    + Fleshed-out and lovable characters
+ The music is awesome, especially for people who grew up playing old video games.
+ Your moral choices affect the story, and you can choose your ending.
+ The pacing of the story is just all right
    + Controls are fluid
+ The combat mechanism is quite refreshing and creative
+ A lot of easter eggs that contribute to world-building.
+ As of now, I haven't found anything sloppy or unreasonable with worldbuilding. Most situations ingame are reasonable.
+ Interesting details (such as dialogue) that gives a deeper understanding about the motives of certain characters (I won't spoil this part)

    Negatives:
    - Combat is a bit too easy. The bullet hell is overly simplified and not really interesting enough. There is also a lack of higher difficulty modes, forcing those looking for a challenge onto the darker routes (which is why I quit playing). This is not good for the game's replayability.
    - The theme of mercy and pacifism gradually loses its charm gameplay-wise. Each enemy can be spared by a set method, and after you figure it out, all you need to do is to repeat what you did again and again. It is fun for the first time, but after maybe 2 playthroughs, it becomes pretty bland and robs you of any incentive to spare NPCs. This impacts the game's replayability.

    Neutral Aspects:
~ The visual style is unique and quirky, and quite simplified. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing.
~ A lot of content left intentionally unexplained. Good for fan speculations and fanmade content, but perhaps a little bit confusing......?

    Overall:
Solid and worth its price, and wonderful for the first few runs until you get the perfect ending. The mechanisms are sufficient to support the game. The flaws, while significant, are not likely to impact players who simply want to enjoy the story.

    Maybe the best RPG ever.

To be honest, there are no words high enough to praise Undertale.

It breakes the trope of many RPGs that violence is the only way out. It's not. Violence is the worst possible way to interact with your surroundings, you think you are gaining LOVE that way, but you are not gaining Love. Making friends is far more important and if you do not know that, just buy this game and learn your lesson.

In conclusion, it is a charming and short $5 made by one guy. It is very basic, but quite creative. Let me be clear though, this thing is not as amazing as some weird fans are making it to be. Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Celeste TRUMP this game. Sonic Mania Plus for $20 is 10/10/ I cannot emphasize this enough, Undertale is a nice $5 game.

Firstly, the plot of the game is not deep. It's just a rollercoaster of twists and fourth wall breaks. Characters in this game are plain and idiotic. And humor is stupid. Very stupid. If you came here for plot, you're in wrong way. It's just an absurd comedy with simple kindergarten moral "Don't Kill".
Second, this game is too childilsh. Sometimes Undertale tries to become "serious" or "scary". This game is too weird for me. Most of time is oversweet melodrama, but if you play at Genocide route, this game become into edgy horror.
Also this game gives to player illusion of non-linearity. All variability is just choosing to play as angelic pretty child or juvenile maniac. There are no challenging moral dilemmas, especially after you learned about the conditions for reaching the endings. This game is very linear.
And yeah, graphics. Undertale's pixel-art is terrible even for Indie games. There are so many SNES games with beautiful pixel-art like Chrono Trigger or Tales of Phantasia. Just look at Hyper Light Drifter. This game is also created in Game Maker Studio and it have breathtaking visual art. And where's optimization? Why this game is run only on 4:3?
Well, the game's music is the only thing, that makes this game good. I liked Asgore's theme much.
This review if just my opinion. If you like the game, then I will not blame you. It's just an overhyped game with terrible fanbase of 14 year old schoolgirls.

After finishing chapter one of Deltarune, I thought to jump back on to my old favorite for a while [Undertale]. Regret soon followed. Sans is very annoying and not creative in his puns, and I love dad joke puns like the ones Sans is known for and reading them they didn't make me laugh or cringe, they made me angry because they are constant and doesn't provide any detail. The story is boring, and the three routs [Neutral, Peaceful, Genocide] are creative sure but like, who cares? This game lost its appeal on me after playing actually good games with story that dragged me in. Undertale is simply a garbage game, with a weak story, with at best semi-likable characters, and in total just okay music and bad graphics. I love pixel graphics, don't get me wrong. I love pixelation over 3 dimensional figures. [Insert Japanese porn joke here]. But the issue is that the graphics are dull, overly smooth in most areas, too bright and colorful, it hurts to look at this game sometimes. Undynes house is one of those too colorful ones, so is the lab [TOO MUCH YELLOW/LIGHT BLUE MIX.] Sometimes [for example sans secret room] it is just not that great or rewarding. Photoshop Flowey [or Omega Flowey] doesn't fit in, it sure is fun to battle him [more on the battles later] but his graphics are so badly put together [like real photoshops [this was a joke, laugh]] that it took away from the game. It was fine on its own but the graphics Flowey has here are so bad that it was not worth it anymore. The characters were tiring to deal with. Toriel is annoying and over caring [which i know is her character but like, I don't feel bad for killing her anymore]. Sans is annoying with his puns, Papyrus is also very annoying to read because of the **** way he talks, Undyne is meh, Alphys makes my head hurt when I talk to her, Mettaton [In all forms including Ex, Neo, Overworld] just no. Flowey is an awful villain, should have killed us one shot if they were trying. Asgore literally doesn't live long enough to like or hate him,

So I should talk about the one good thing, the thing that makes it a 4.
The battle system. That saves this game from a 0. I would just not be writing this review on this garbage game and hope it just ceases to exist soon except the battle system is genius. If you read/heard reviews of Undertale you will know this is the games strong point that most people love. It is easy yet difficult, creative, and just overall makes this game almost mediocre on its own. If you do plan on playing Undertale and you haven't yet, ignore the story and jump right into battle, it really is what makes the game actually somewhat worth while.

    GAMEPLAY ( 7 out of 10 )
The combat system is innovative, varied and frequently challenging but lacks depth and winning a tough battle is much more about eye-finger coordination than strategy or creative thinking. The puzzles are somewhat clever but there are very few of them in the game and the level designs aren't the most impressive or diverse, particularly in the tedious first half of the game. When you encounter a monster, you can do certain actions (including “Check”, “Console”, “Talk”, “Complement”, “Joke”, “Hug”, “Flirt”, etc…) besides fighting and you can even choose to “Spare” him, which only works after you do certain actions or when the monster is weakened enough. This is an interesting system and it's much more fun and less repetitive than simply attacking the monsters. But with some monsters, including all the bosses, the “Spare” option sometimes doesn't work the same way than with regular monsters or doesn't work at all, and the game only gives you a small clue about this in the beginning and never reinforces it after that.

To “Spare” a monster doesn't reward you with any EXP points (only with coins), so if you don't kill any monster your character will remain weak and with low HP throughout the entire game. It doesn't make any sense to me that you earn EXP points for killing the monsters and not earn any for winning the battles without killing them, and it only makes the game more frustrating in the process. To “Talk” and “Spare” monsters starts out as a more compelling course of action then simply killing them, but because your character’s HP remains low and the monsters become stronger as you advance in the game and never show you any mercy (they will always try to kill you if you don't spare them, even if you don't attack them), the result will probably be an increase in “Game Over” screens per hour. This eventually forces you to backtrack a little to buy more health items. In conclusion, the only incentive to continue not killing any monster after the first few hours of the game is to see how that affects the story and the ending.

If you kill one of the bosses the game will probably punish you by becoming increasingly hard and mind-numbing and making the final boss battle almost impossible to beat – at least the boss that I killed had that consequence – which is extremely unfair and anti-climactic, particularly because the game doesn't give you any clue about this. Also, it’s impossible to go back to before your last save point because you can't have more than one save file, which is another incomprehensible and dated aspect that adds more frustration – if this is the price to pay for a few speech lines alluding to what you did in previous lives and playthroughs and other so called “4th wall destruction” elements present in the game, it's not worth it in my humble opinion. In other words, the choice to be a pacifist or a murderer appears to be just an illusion of choice, since the game never gives you any chance to redeem yourself.

The controls are simple enough to be enjoyable to play with a keyboard and it's also compatible with non-Microsoft gamepads.

    STORY ( 7 out of 10 )
Character speeches and narrative lines are well written – some of them are genuinely funny and a handful are truly thought provoking. The characters themselves are odd and have unique personalities, although throughout the game none of them is developed to the point of becoming completely three dimensional. The plot is mysterious and different enough and has some heart, and it's impressive how the game remembers what you did and how some of your actions affect the tone of the story and its characters' behaviors, but at the same time it's incoherent and doesn't seem to have a very well-defined vision of what it wants to transmit to the player. I couldn’t beat the final boss and thus haven’t seen any version of the story finale.

    VISUALS ( 6 out of 10 )
“Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery EP” has a much more beautiful pixel art design then this game and there are a few times when it's not perfectly clear what's happening on screen, which hurts the gameplay.

    SOUND ( 7 out of 10 )
The music is enjoyable, its tone always fits the game seamlessly, but the sound effects are just awful.

    VALUE ( 9 out of 10 )
The game lasts between 7-11 hours, depending on how you play and how many times you die in the game. That's a great amount considering the low price, despite the fact that after I finished the game I didn't want to replay it, even knowing there was still new dialog to be read and multiple endings to be unlocked.

    FINAL SCORE ( 7.0 out of 10 )
An innovative, somewhat clever, enjoyable, simplistic and half-the-time frustrating 2D RPG that lacks depth and coherence.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Played it on the year of its release and really enjoyed it. However it is not without its flaws.

The best thing about it is the music; lovely pieces that became instant memes because of how catchy and "video-gamey" they were.

    [spoilers ahead]
Story comes next. It is interesting enough to catch your attention, and the game design deviates from classical RPG on purpuse in order to make you get focused on narrative and dialogue - for an example: there are side-quests and instances where you can deviate from the route to 'complete' the game, but while in most other RPGs the side-quests reward you with special equipment, weapons, abilities etc., in Undertale you get funny cutscenes and dialogue as rewards.

The story itself is simple, charming but lacks some depth and complexity. At most, it hits you with some "im14andthisisdeep" moments. 4th wall-breaking is more of an easy gimmick than something truly original or smart.

Graphic design could have been better. Some characters feel clunky and rushed; devs could have done a better job in this regard.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a hard decision, Undertale is a fun game that is really fun to play, however there is some flaws that affect my decision. Firstly the biggest problem, the message; you know when the trailer for Undertale came out it said "the friendly RPG where no one has to die" it should of really said "The RPG where no one should die or else SUFFER FOREVER IN THE FLAMING PITS OF HELL" because this game will shove the message down your THROUGHT. Another problem is doing genocide, it's nearly impossible to play it because all you do is grind, it's really hard to do in the core, oh god don't get me started on the core; I had to "reset" 5 TIMES before I could progress. Plus the style isn't my cup of tea. Sure, it's really nice; however I feel like it's overly simplistic. But there is one problem...one problem that really gets me mad about this game...its community. Most of the Community is really awful, so awful in fact that many people judge this game based of its fandom, That's just awful. What about the music? Please be warned as it is catchy and addictive.
The gameplay is fairly simple and is focused about the concept of skill-based combat that is not a combat at all. Nothing special but good enought to keep you engaged while you enjoy the great story.
To sum it up - great game and you should play it. I'm going to eat my spaghetti now.

Toby Fox brings new life to the archetype of classic RPG games with this amazing game. It combines witty humor with deep meta-critical storytelling. The authentic soundtrack will absolutely give you thrills.

UNDERTALE is a satire of conventional RPGs that brings multiple laughs while simultaneously offering a story that challenges a player's perspective on characters in a video game and RPGs games as a whole.

The excellent music, art design and story however is held back by it's simple gameplay that while intriguing at first seems to fall short of its potential.

I know that popular games at some point get a lot of backlash for just being popular, but this games gets trashed waaay to much, and it's a really good game even though it's not the most extraordinary game ever mad. The world is really lineal and inconsistent in therms of desing and the game mechanics although a great concept are extrempley basic.

Undertale may be one of the greatest marvels in video game history, it has some of the most relatable, funniest and likeable characters in any game seen by the lieks of humans, it has some of the best music most of us have ever heard, it makes you want to listen to it on repeat for decades turning on centuries, it has a very unique combat style, and it utilizes very clever techniques toUndertale may be one of the greatest marvels in video game history, it has some of the most relatable, funniest and likeable characters in any game seen by the lieks of humans, it has some of the best music most of us have ever heard, it makes you want to listen to it on repeat for decades turning on centuries, it has a very unique combat style, and it utilizes very clever techniques to relate back to the player and to break the 4th wall. Especially considering the fact that the game was made by one person and is in 2D it is a masterpiece, and may be one of the best games ever made, in my opion at least. Expand

What a humour, the best I ve ever seen in games. There are so many incredible scenes and many hints to other games or movies. This is on such a high level, that I would so much give this game a 10/10. Toby, you gave me so much joy, through your humour, thank you so much.
The soundtrack is so good, even with such low quality. Where I heard Quiet Water the first time, I stopped playing,

The soundtrack is so good, even with such low quality. Where I heard Quiet Water the first time, I stopped playing, wow.

But there are 2 big weaknesses: First of all, the gameplay is too simple. The minigames for attacking and defending are great ideas and there are many abbreviations with nice ideas, but still there should be more complex elements in the whole game. I guess the jrpg system is the problem. The many dialogs and long paths were annoying also. Yes, sometimes I had troubles to motivate to continue to play because of that, especially in the end. So for sure I didnt want to play this game again to sse the other endings.
And second: The graphic is about 30 years old. Where is the problem to implement a graphic for example like in Secret of Mana?

Overall: -> There are 2 elements, that are such extremely high level, on art level. But 2 elements are destroying so much.

I think this game will always be relevant! The plot is very pleased. Worked characters about this now and let's talk. The characters are very ardent when you end the genocide ending then you just cannot believe that you could kill your favorite characters with your own hands. And the next plus of this game is that there are many endings to them 3 - Neutral, Genocide, True pacifist.

In my opinion this is the perfect game!
P.S. (Many haters say that the game is bad only because of its community and graphics. Well, for the first time the game cannot spoil the community because it is single in dota 2 and cs: go yes it can-be. As for graphics, one person created it first I can not argue he could create better graphics, but think about what games he was inspired and then you will understand everything! Have a nice day)

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
