Undertale, a game where no one has to die.
why is this game so highly rated?
It's unique, it's different, it gives you, the player a choice that would affect the entire game,
seriously, the game remembers all of your actions, even when you reset the entire game.
I don't understand why @blubberguts would rate this game 0 when he/she said he/she only played this game for a few minutes.

Im going to keep this short because I dont feel like delving too much into it but this has been the first game in ages to strike such an emotional cord with me. Everything from the writing, the dialogue and the OST are stellar. I haven't been this emotionally invested in a game in a long long time. In a sea of AAA games with no creativity left, this game is a wonderful breath of fresh air. I know I'm being incredibly vague and general but the dialogue and interactions you have with each character are incredibly cleverly written. If you like games that take your actions into account well Undertale is great for that. Everything your character does potentially can impact the story and how characters interact with you.

Its a good game. Good combat system. Not gonna lie, its not the BEST game I have ever played, but it deserves a 10. Only reason there are bad ratings are that theres people that think old graphics and gameplay make it bad. (also theres people with multiple acounts saying there review got deleted when the creators cant even delete reviews, 10/10 )

This game is a reminder of what's possible for an indie game. It demonstrated a lot of wit in its design, though its antique graphics and control scheme are still a detriment, though no more can be expected from an indie developer with such limited resources. A very interesting game to say the least with a lot of content and replay value.

It is not like other games where you try to perform an action with an expected result, and are disappointed in the lack of developer foresight, rather this game does the opposite and exceeds expected design and foresight by meeting and beating my expectations every time I raised the bar. Every time I explored the game, I learned something else that was actually relevant and had meaning, rather than small details of little consequence. I can't spoil the game too much but I can say that writing, audio and narrative of the game are worth the price of admission. While I do criticize the graphical choices (having no idea whether to stick with black and white or go full color for some sequences) and the bullet-hell game-play (especially without a controller), the game offered characters that had genuine traits and flaws, humorous writing filled with meta-references and subversion of typical cliches, a soundtrack that blends with the narrative for great effect, and a conclusion that leaves the player with the satisfaction of completing the experience.
This is a game that can bring tears due to the writing and music blending together with game-play that works due to the player being immersed in the game.

If there is a game to buy this year, Undertale should be one of them (unless you are not looking for RPGs or bullet-hell games). One tip, keep the game's main tag-line in mind.

(For Anime haters; i probably would not be surprised to see you dislike a handful of characters, and i totally understand.)

I have not had an emotionally evoking game like this in a very long time; the last i can remember feeling this way about the game was through another indie game, "To the moon", and i can say that both are very masterfully crafted with story in mind.

My one Gripe with this game is that ultimately it is far too easy. I have heard talks about a "Hard Mode" being in the works by the developer, but even some of the tougher fights were easy enough to figure out and didn't take up too much of my time.

I'm going to make this very blunt ; The soundtrack of this game is some of the best i've heard in years. I can only think of a handful of songs that are not exceptional. Definitely the best retro soundtrack we've had in years.

If you're looking for a RPG with solid writing, outside the box thinking, and the best retro soundtrack in years, i highly recommend picking up this game.

An incredible game that (if played spoiler free) can take you back to the era of your life getting new games from your parents that you've never heard about and having a blast playing them, the joy of playing a game for the first time as a kid. Fans of the Mother series, quirky humor found often in webcomics, and bullet hell games should have a blast with this title.

    -Pros-
Great Aesthetic that blends styles from the SNES/Genesis Era.
Good characters that you can get attached to easily due to how likable they are.
Amazing Soundtrack that has a lot of varied tracks.
    Good active combat system.
Removes the sentiment that a Pacifist playthrough is a novel concept in games.
The game will always keep track of your actions even if you reset and start a new run, making every choice matter.
The mechanics are a part of the narrative.
A good story even if it does get a bit confusing unless you play through a No Mercy run.
No Mercy runs permanently affects the game.
Toby is a white adorable dog.
    Temmie.
    Papyrus 12/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I shall preface this review with "I DON'T EVEN LIKE RPGS." Keep that it mind. Undertale is frankly a one-of-a-kind experience. Its storytelling is powerful and the paper-thinness of the fourth wall is amazingly creative. You'll grow to know and understand each and every character in the game (my favourite being Mettaton, as yours should be too) as you progress. For replay value, the game can be played two different ways, each of which has its own challenges. You can decide to NOT kill any monster you come across, which requires some outside thinking to end each conflict peacefully, or you can decide to go down the Genocide route which actually showcases the game's characters at their best - y'know, as they all join together to try to stop you killing the entire world, you monster. Overall, it's worth playing the game to see BOTH of these experiences - the Genocide ending gives fantastic battles, the most epic tracks in the OST and a subtle "TAKE THAT, **** at streamers (invaluable, really) while the Pacifist ending is the more... stomachable route with many genuinely funny moments and... a skeleton-dating sim. A game that's completely taken over my thoughts, conversations, dreams, and nightmares even after beating it, and one that's going to linger in my mind and change how I see and play everything else for years to come.

For those who form hate mobs over spoilers, I'll be dropping a few hints of the nature of the game in this review, but I'll avoid talking about anything plot-related. You owe it to yourself to find out what all the fuss is about, and it's probably best to dive in without any spoilers, or even clues on what to expect, so read ahead with caution.

Simply put, this is one of the most consistently funny, touching, surprising, shocking, charming, unpredictable, disturbing and overall memorable games made in years. It's ambitious but simple in design, taking basic, old-school mechanics and twisting them around a little to make it its own unique thing. That alone would make it worth a visit for nostalgic rpg fans, but where it goes so much further is in the way it bends and then utterly shatters its own rules, creating a colourful, branching story that's compelling enough on the surface and then outright mind-bending as you delve deeper into its layered meta-narrative. While I hesitate to even hint at anything that might spoil it, I'll at least say that this game has both made me laugh and terrified me more than anything else has in a long time.

While there's a lot to enjoy for anyone who likes games, the ideal target audience is an experienced gamer who's been playing since the NES/SNES era, given the partial reliance on nostalgia for some of its charm. It's a game that's very self-aware and fully indulges itself in pointing out its own use of gaming tropes and cliches, but it's a lot more clever than just calling them silly and moving in. The deconstruction of games and the common gamer is a central theme to the overall plot and it has a lot to say about you, the player, and how you you play it. These moments range from clever little meta-jokes to sheer horror over your actions and creates an unsettling sense of overall paranoia whenever you do anything.

The breakdown of so many common aspects of RPGs and games in general work so well because they're not just jokes, but central plot devices and everything in-universe works on its own even with all the meta twists going on. It's not just a matter of pointing to a gaming cliche and going "hey look guys isn't this dumb" but it's actually a very effectively analytical breakdown of games and why we play them. But before you dismiss it as a pretentious "art" game, it also happens to be a very well-written and funny game that hardly takes itself seriously in the slightest despite it all.

That a game can be so whimsical and funny on the surface and so clever and mind-bending beneath really just makes it a success on every single level. Much like many other landmark indie titles of the past, I can picture this one having a lot of influence on titles to come, but nothing could ever truly capture what this one accomplished again. It's a once-in-a-generation kind of game and you won't ever play anything like it again. While I hate to rush to such conclusions as calling it my favourite game ever so soon after completing it, that was my immediate first instinct upon reaching the ending I was shooting for.

    So play it. And remember:

Many of the people who love Undertale will find it tickles their nostalgia bone just as much geek culture.

Pros: The game content is mostly balanced. Most of the difficulty in the game comes from intentionally wanting to have a bad time with it. Most of the game can be played in a single play-through, with additional endings available after completing the game once.

Negatives: Some jokes waste too much time to get to the punchline, the game also hasn't learned from some of the most hated mechanics that have been abandoned in newer games (eg invisible random battles, long cutscenes that can't be skipped, and "dead end"'s caused by early mistakes.)

That said the negatives are small enough to not make players want to quit the game. Most of the negative information about the games comes players expecting Earthbound and getting something more punishing like Mario+Luigi defending actions if it were a danmaku (bullethell) game.

The story writing is clever, light hearted, fun and never comes across as preachy. I was having so much fun and becoming so immersed, that I let my guard down, and suddenly realized that I genuinely cared about the characters, and I cared about consequences of my choices. The game often stays in my thoughts long after I've finished playing for the day.

Undertale is advertised as an "RPG where you don't have to destroy anyone", but Undertale is not a game about tiptoeing through the tulips with your newly made friends. There are difficult, grim decisions that you need to make, and some of the consequences can't be undone EVER, even by deleting or restarting the game. There were also times that the game made a complete 180 when I wasn't expecting it and left me feeling very disturbed, unsettled, and just saying "Wow". We've become so accustomed and desensitized to all the usual video game tropes, that it's hard for a new game to evoke this kind of emotion. I give Undertale lots of credit for being able to do this so well, with so little (small file size, simple graphics, and being mostly created by one person).

Like most games, you are in control of a character, but Undertale often breaks the 4th wall and also acknowledges YOU (the player) as another character in the game. Undertale may not be the first game to do this, but it's one of the best.

There are lots of secrets, sub plots and interesting variations to discover. Lots of replayability potential. This is an RPG, but there is no grinding, back-tracking, or wasting time. Every moment was designed to be enjoyable or purposeful. Toby has taken the RPG genre, deconstructed it, and created something very unique and fresh here. There was so much thought and depth put into this game, it's unbelievable that this was created mostly just by one person.

Also need to mention that the soundtrack is fantastic. There are something like 77 quality songs in the Undertale OST, so the music never gets stale. I read somewhere that Toby would write the music first and then create a scene/level for the game to match the music. This really helps with the continuity/immersion/mood of the game.

There's already a lot of hype about this game, but I don't care; I just had too much damn fun playing it. This is easily now my favorite game this year. I hope that you get to enjoy it too.

Wasn't sure what to make of it initially. I was kind of annoyed by the increasing number of ravenous fans, but I decided I'd try it anyway.

Not 20 minutes into the game, it had me in tears. I was blubbering like a little kid. Undertale is the most heartfelt game I've ever experienced. It's fun from a gamer perspective, but I was not expecting such an emotional rollercoaster.

    I was not ready.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Undertale was a brilliant game for me. It's been a while since I bothered to spend my money on a new game, and I'm glad that this was the one I chose.

The story is emotional and incredibly deep. I don't plan to spoil anything here, but if you're looking for a JRPG with a neat storyline, this one should blow your expectations; and the fact that there's more to the plot than just the story (its confusing, but once you figure it out it turns out there's much more than first meets the eye).

Obviously the fact that you didn't have to destroy anyone, as advertised, made Undertale special. It had its own unique spot in the JRPG world; or at least, thats the way I've seen it - perhaps someone with more fond knowledge of that game type will be able to disagree with me.

But what truly made me want to write this review was that this game makes you feel for every action you make. Sometimes it's actually better to look up the result of an action you're unsure of, at least the way I see it, as long as you try to not spoil the plot for yourself at all. But for every decision in this game (except two of them - this game was tough), I decided on my own what I had to do and wanted to do, and every time I got the outcome I was looking for.

You are rewarded for your determination. Just remember that you should always go for what you think is right.

(Also, dogs. I don't think I'll ever look at a dog the same way.)

That being said, this game has a great cast of lovable characters who each still have their flaws and missteps (except Papyrus, Papyrus is damn near perfect) fantastic music that anyone can appreciate but will especially get 8-bit fans excited, unique battle system that essentially is where you decide what ending you will get and wonderful little meta nuggets and fourth wall breaking features done in the best way possible. It's Metal Gear Solid 2 levels of meta at times, and one part in particular goes even beyond that...And the part I adore the most, it's a complete package. Almost every question you can ask can be answered by some part in the game, it's been a long time since a game offered such a tight, held together story in my memory.

The tone of this game is somewhat weird. There's a sad story behind everything: a child lost in a world full of monsters, but at the same time, there's the realization that there's more to it than that. Every character has its own story, its own strengths and flaws, and the music and graphics provide the perfect atmosphere for them to develop.

Then there's the unexpected. Boy are you in for something. Or not. I really don't want to spoil anything, but just know you will find much, much more than what you think.

So… Where do I begin? I don’t really know. I think this task is, well, impossible. How do I do this game justice? What exactly can I say that will influence you as a reader to comprehend Undertale, and what the game is in its essence?
I do not know. I don’t even think I can. However, I am determined to make an attempt.

    The Story
Rarely have I ever played a game that cared so deeply about making your choices matter. Every step of the journey, every interaction and action towards other characters - it all influences the story. There are so many endings to Undertale depending on how you play the game that it’s actually somewhat… Well, hard to comprehend. The time invested into making every choice matter is astonishing and something to be admired. The attention to details is sublime, and at no point do the player find him- or herself lost in the plot. That said does not mean the game cannot frustrate or confuse you, because it does… But in all the right and completely new ways.
I’ll be honest with you, I can’t let go of this game’s story. I have had dreams about it for three nights in a row. If that doesn’t mean that this game got to me, I will never know what will. It’s rare that you find a game that grabs and emotionally invests you so heavily into its world and atmosphere. Undertale is one of those games. And the reason the storyline is so captivating is quite obvious…

    The Characters
I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun getting to know characters. Every single character you meet, from the main characters to minor roles and nameless NPC’s, are all introduced so incredibly well. With witty remarks and hilarious interactions, Undertale introduces characters fluently in a masterful fashion that is truly an art in itself. Humor is a strong factor throughout the entire game, but that doesn’t mean the game doesn’t take itself serious, because it certainly does. Not many games has as serious consequences as Undertale has. If you kill someone in the cleverly constructed turn-based combat system, there’s no going back. That character dies, and there’s no way to change it back. However, this again goes to show how deeply devoted this game is towards player choice. The player can go through the entire game without killing a single person, if he or she decides to do so. The power of the world is entirely in the hands of the player, and with it lies the fate of the characters as well.

    The World
With all the power invested with the player, Toby Fox serves the entire world of Undertale on a silver platter for you to do with as you please. But the world – and the game – reacts to the outcome you choose for it. One of the most interesting interactions is how the world and its characters truly resets, when you reset the game. The world of Undertale isn’t just a regular game world – it’s reality to its inhabitants. What you do is reflected. Resetting the game is no longer just a reset to play the game again: It whipes out every characters memory and resets it to square one. And if you do things differently, skip through dialogue like you know what they’re going to say, the characters become suspicious and act in a different way towards you. The game lives, so to speak. Yeah, I told you the game took itself seriously.
And that’s what’s so fascinating about Undertale. It’s not just another very brilliantly designed and incredibly atmospheric game. It has a soul. Undertale is a game with a soul. It is a living world in itself, a world that you alter to your wish, but also leaves you as a player responsible for your actions. Let it be known that I love this game and its characters and the world very dearly, but… I will not play it again, and I will tell you why.

The game is over for me. I ended it just the way I wanted it to. To me, the way I ended my playthrough, I wouldn’t want it any other way, and I wouldn’t want to reset the world or the characters. It’s perfect just the way it is, even though I already miss it, and so, I will leave you with these final words to attempt to fully grasp the essence of Undertale:

This is a serious game. This is a silly game.
This is a funny game. This is a scary game.
This game made me laugh. It made me cry.
It made me hate. It made me love.
It made me feel powerful, and yet I have never felt more powerless.
    But most of all…
This game filled me with determination, and I hope it will do so for you too.

Thank you for reading. And thank you Toby Fox, for this astonishing masterpiece of a game.

The only reason I even gave this a go was because I have two friendsI have never understood why it's always the average games that explode. Flappy Bird, Five Nights at Freddy's, and now this. Yeah, I'm not going to make very many friends with this one. But let it be known I do not think this is a bad game. I just think it could have been so much more. To be fair, I've never liked RPGs. The only reason I even gave this a go was because I have two friends who are enamoured with it. So I was pretty hesitant to try it out. Lo and behold, I didn't think much of it. I did see it through to the end, though.

One of the game's main draws is that you're able to choose either a "Pacifist Route", or a "Genocide Route"; either using the ACT command to pacify foes through simply talking to them, or using the FIGHT command to slaughter foes. I knew about this going in and as such I was ready to do a Genocide Route because I figured I'd have more fun that way... until I learned that the Genocide Route involves near-constant grinding as one is required to defeat every monster in a given area. After learning this I was particularly soured and ended up just clearing through the game only fighting enemies I encountered naturally, which the game considers a "Neutral Route". Sure, the clue was in the title, but after seeing that the Pacifist Route involves no grinding whatsoever it's hard not to feel jealous. And no, I'm not going back to play through the entire game as a Pacifist just to skip grinding, that would be silly. to do on a game I don't like.

Its "heartwarming" characters I found more irritating than charming (with the possible exception of Sans and Papyrus). Its "unique" gameplay I felt was an unstable mash of an RPG and a "bullet hell" shooter that demanded the use of a controller due to constant spikes in difficulty. The story was clichéd with most of the "twists" being fairly predictable (there's one in particular that doesn't even affect one if they are playing on the Genocide Route), and the humor was hit-and-miss, most of which being references or "random" humor, both of which I despise.
There's also nostalgic pandering to other quirky RPG games, such as Earthbound and... yeah, that's about it. I have a feeling the reason most people like this game so much is because it follows in Earthbound's steps so much you may as well just call it a sequel with a frustrating bullet hell game attached.

That being said, the soundtrack is phenomenal, with many varied genres and styles. I've added a lot of the songs to my music playlist on YouTube, because holy hell, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a soundtrack nearly as much as this one.

In short, if you like RPGs, give it a go. I have a feeling this is just a game that wasn't for me, and that's fine. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go build a bunker. This game has a fanbase that's mostly rooted in tumblr, and God knows they're all nutters over there.

Why is this game so popular?? The story is not very engaging, and the combat system is a interesting concept but gets old very quickly. Yeah you can make decisions, but if that's the type of game your looking for there are many better choices out there. I watched a full playthrough, and i can safely say this game is nothing more than slightly above average at best.

From the demo, it was okay. Then I played the game and it completely blew my mind. All of the positive reviews are not a scam, nor is there sketchy business going on. Undertale is honestly a beautiful game with memorable characters, even down to the most minor ones.

The most unique part of this game is that if you have the option of either defeating an enemy, or sympathizing with it and letting Toriel take care of it. That may seem like a stupid idea, but you get different endings depending on whether you attacked enemies or went through the game as a Pacifist. The writing, the characters, the story, the gameplay, the boss battles, everything about this game is executed so well. Many AAA games today work so hard to make a game immersive, charming and overall perfect; while I won't point fingers, Undertale is the true definition of perfect. There isn't a single thing that I can say bad about this game, it's seriously that good. The only nit-picks I have are minor, and I don't think they're worth talking about. If you are thinking about buying this game, my answer is an absolute yes. 9.99 is the perfect amount for this work of art.

    Undertale gets a 10/10.

Just play this game, Since I dont want to spoil much I cant tell you how much this game is worth the prize that Toby is asking. I'll tell you one thing: If the game makes you not want to hurt final boss, and instead tell him that you wont fight him and later give him a hug, it has done a good job. Easily a competitor for the best game of 2015 and Best Indie game of 2015.

Nothing much else to say, just that all the 10/10 reviews are legit. This game is seriously the best written game in many many years. Anyone denying that is trying to be a gaming hipster, while also attacking fans of the games as hipsters as well. Hilarious. Get the game, you won't be disappointed, unless you're deliberately trying to be.

Undertale is probably the only game I could ever consider a 10/10. It's gameplay is simple yet unique, but it's story is far deeper than anything I've seen in a video game. It's an absolute masterpiece and without a doubt my all time favorite game, I love it and I hope you love it too.

P.S.: To those of you claiming reviews have been deleted, IF they have been deleted (which is unlikely), its not because there is some massive conspiracy revolving around making a horrible game look good. Its likely because you broke one or more of Metacritic's rules on posting reviews.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was quite disappointed with this game, unfortunately. Going in from hearing the hype, I was expecting some deeply complex game with a world you could explore and very fleshed out characters (especially NPCs who aren't even major ones like the game's fandom seem to love)

    1. For an RPG, it's very short. Aside from attack/act/item/mercy, the game almost feels like a non-RPG. Which I guess is the point since it IS a deconstruction, but still.

    2. I found the puzzles in the game to be very lackluster and rather tacked-on. They really don't require any effort at all to solve.

    3. The gameplay is hit-or-miss: you'll either love the bullet hell-inspired combat system or loathe it immensely. I found some of them to be fun, but others to be extremely frustrating. Undertale is certainly not Touhou levels of complexity with these segments but it's not 'entry-level'/beginner friendly, either. I'd recommend checking out some gameplay on places like youtube first to see if this is your thing or not for the more complex parts.

    4. The humour will either be the best thing ever to you, or grate on your nerves. I found some characters surprisingly annoying when I doubt I should have.

    5. The game's world feels very small, cramped and claustrophobic, which is strange considering the backdrops in some
areas suggest otherwise (such as in the second area of the game.) The 'town' area is mostly one long corridor. It all feels a bit lazy and lifeless, which is a shame because the art has some charm that isn't properly utilized because of this 'series of corridors' design choice. If the creator ever makes a sequel or any other games along this vein, it'd be wonderful to see more of the world; we're given a brief view, it feels, but nothing that really drew me in. For you it could be different.

    6. NPCs outside of major ones and shopkeepers are very, very flat and undeveloped. So undeveloped that many have static sprites and resemble cardboard cutouts simply pasted onto the map. It's a huge shame because the creator went to the effort of making non-encounter NPCs have original sprites.

    7. A lot of the major NPCs, for me, were hard to get attached to because you're not given enough time to learn about them or see a lot of development outside of standard 'going from hating you to loving you' depending on the outcome of your fight with them respectively. The sudden change from hostility to wanting to be besties with you is rather grating. Undyne averted this, but even then, befriending her is a short affair that kind of stops as soon as it starts, which I found disappointing, as it feels forced. This aspect feels rushed, which is such a shame.
The game's final boss definitely has a tragic aspect to him, but because there is hardly much build up or mention of this character until the last few moments, we hardly get a chance to know him. So much potential for more that is again sadly underutilized. It would have been nice to have lengthened the game more and put in more moments to really get to know these characters better, as it stands it just doesn't feel long enough.

    8. The music is pretty solid but some tracks do feel a tiny bit inconsistent but for the most part the music is a treat to listen to and very catchy.

Closing thoughts: Whilst I don't consider it perfect, it's passable, although the replay value for the game depends on how frustrating or tedious you find the gameplay and how bearable you find the characters. If you're not into bullet hell games with characters that sound like 14 year old attention-seekers from sites like deviantArt and tumblr, I'd consider giving it a pass. If you can move past these issues you might get something valuable out of it.

So for this, I give a 5/10, only because I feel it's a game you'll either come away satisfied with, or dissatisfied with.
Whilst is definitely shows it's ambitions clearly, I didn't find this game to be mind-blowingly innovative, nor setting any new standards for the RPG genre or indie scene.

I had no idea upon buying the game that it could even get as dark as it does during a no-mercy run. It's really saying something when a good portion of players refuse to play through the 'evil' side of the game because they can't bear to see the characters suffer. This game makes you feel real, tangible shame for your actions, often by breaking the fourth wall.

It's better than Earthbound, which has a lot of grind and the jokes get a bit boring (and then the game is a bit weird at the end - still like Earthbound though). In Undertale, the makers continually screw with you and your expectations built from the history of RPGs, which is awesome. I couldn't try playing another MMO without thinking about this game.

The negatives seem to be about simple puzzles - they miss the point - the puzzles were just a navigation, a way point. This is not a game about nostalgia but about challenging your expectations. In a way, your game play will also give you a reflection of yourself. Other negs: the trailer tells you a superficial (but necessarily superficial) view of the game. The graphics are simple, but you get used to them. A good book is not based on its typeface, and a good game shouldn't be based on graphics.
