If you don't fall in love with the wonderfully fleshed out characters, the fun music that comes with each boss, the ability to play as a pacifist or mass murderer, the humor displayed in every piece of dialogue, or the touching story about this human that the monsters need to be free and their adventures through the underground, then maybe this isn't the game for you. This game has things for anyone to enjoy from challenging attack dodging to puzzle solving to the NPC conversations. Before I bought the game I thought it looked quite simplistic, but the game goes far deeper than I would have thought. Each character has a unique and interesting story. Even the enemies and bosses have stories and backgrounds (Except for Jerry, no one likes Jerry. Poor Jerry). I cannot get enough of this game. I haven't even finished it yet but it has already blown my expectations. This game is a fun adventure that everyone, whether human or monster, deserves to enjoy. Expand

As a lifelong gamer, I have experienced gaming highs and lows. I have played games and made me jump out of my chair and exclaim "AWESOME" and games that made me weep like a child. Games have become an important part of who I am and I can say without reservation that Undertale is a game like no other.

I'm honestly against a lot of indie games nowadays. Mostly because they're all the same thing. 8 or 16-bit graphics, and some sort of RPG where you're stuck somewhere. But god damn is Undertale isn't one of the best games I've ever played in my life.

After the art style caught my interest I decided to buy this game on a whim. I'm glad that I did not read up on the game before playing it because the less you know about Undertale before going in the more you will be able to appreciate the gameplay and writing it throws at you.

The game is very much it's own thing and is a fresh take on the turn based RPG and adventure game genre.

The game is very much it's own thing and is a fresh take on the turn based RPG and adventure game genre. Where action commands in combat has been used before, Undertale takes it up another notch and creates something entirely unique to itself for solid (and sometimes humorous) encounters with the monsters you face. Never before have I played a game where the non-violent approach has been this fun.

The world of Undertale has a colorful cast of personalities. The main cast has a lot of layers to them, and it really feels like your choices matter as to how you decide to interact with them. Groan-inducing, chuckle-worthy, tear-jerking, genuinely terrifying; the characters made me fall in love with them time and time again. It is worth noting that some jokes and references require familiarity with internet subculture though.

The overworld is not very big, but the game fleshes out locations nicely and it feels like almost every screen is memorable in its own way. Despite that, it can be a slog to walk through areas to make sure you have seen everything there is to see. There are some fast travel options, but there are at least three other places that could have benefited from similar functions to backtrack from dead-ends and what-not.

In the grand scheme of things, the game delivers a fulfilling experience where there is a lot to discover about both the geography and population of the small world it creates. Your actions have genuine consequences that radically differ from one another, something that feels rare in games these days. There are points where it feels like corners had to be cut (like a certain boss fight in one of the paths) but they are hard not to forgive when the rest of the experience is so complete.

Stellar game, one of the best I've ever played.

When trying to describe Undertale, the word "lovely" comes to mind a lot. If you fancy retro RPGs and all things lovely, you'll love this game. If playing something that can be described as lovely sounds absolutely horrid to you (so in other words if you're a total killjoy in life), you'll probably not enjoy this game so much.

...Just play it already, will you?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying: this game had no right, NO RIGHT, to be as good as it was. It released the same month as several major AAA releases, sold for only $10, and this is what you got. It had no right, it just waltzed right in, barely even noticed among these other AAA giants... and then blew my expectations out of the water. Not to say I had expectations, but what this game gave me was an experience I will never, ever forget as long as I live.

So Undertale is an RPG in the same vein as Earthbound, in fact many parallels can be drawn to the Mother series such as the art style and mood of the setting. But anyway it's an RPG where you play as a child that fell into an underground world populated by monsters who were driven underground many years ago by humans. But not all of these monsters want to kill you, in fact many of them are quite amiable and have their own lovable personalities, but then that's where the main mechanic of the game comes into play: you can either kill or spare these creatures. I never thought I would say this, but there legitimately is a "wrong" way to play this game in my opinion, if you play any way other than full pacifist route then you are cheating yourself out of the greatest video game experience I have ever felt. Going the aptly named "genocide" route, while an option, I feel will rob you of its intended themes: friendship, awful jokes, and how nobody is beyond redemption, no matter what.

Combat revolves around either taking turns attacking "enemies" (if you wish to do the genocide route), while dodging their attacks by a wario-ware esque bullet hell minigame, or interacting with them to defeat them by...other means (for the pacifist route). Truth is the writing in this game is actually funny. Granted people find different things funny but this game got me laughing the whole way through (when it wasn't making me cry my eyes out). And that's the other thing: this game knows when to be funny, it knows when to be creepy, or when to be dramatic and it knows how to do all of those things very well.

The soundtrack, like the game itself, had NO... RIGHT... to be as good as it is. Although they are simple 8 bit tunes for the most part, with some special effects at just the right moments in the game, the soundtrack is just phenomenally well done, and I frequently catch myself humming some of the delightful tunes you will hear throughout the game.

Where do I even start with the story? As mentioned before you can either choose to kill enemies or "spare" them, going through the game without killing a single character grants you access to what I can only describe as the most fulfilling, intense, heartwarming and adrenaline pumping final boss battle I have ever witnessed in a video game to date. And I've pretty much played all of them, trust me on that one. The visuals mixing with the highly emotional and dynamic music along with the heartwarming dialogue really, really impressed me, and opened up entire new avenues for interacting with the player's emotions through the story. I simply cannot stress enough that if you are a gamer, this is something you NEED to experience at least once. The following conclusion is so heartwarming, if you don't at least choke up a bit, then you have a heart of steel... and I envy you!

The retro style graphics might be turn off for many gamers, particularly with the prevalence of half-hearted indie games flooding the market, toting "retro graphics", but although Undertale uses these visuals as well, it does try some interesting effects and after a little while, you tend to forget about how simple the visuals can look at times.

I shouldn't be giving this game a 10/10 because no game is literally perfect in every way, but since I can't give it a 9.9 I'll round it up to 10 because this game deserves it. It deserves every bit of praise it gets, and it deserves to be remembered for years to come, if not for its wonderful story that tugs at all the right heart strings, then for being an undoubtedly pure video game experience, crafted with love and meticulous attention to detail the likes of which only show up once in a very, very long time.

This game doesn't fit in those? It's more a narratively driven game game.
People say this game is 5-7 hours long, but they forget the fact that the game doesn't end at the endings.. The game is bigger than itself. It's all just a matter of interpretation. So don't google up this and just buy it because knowing more may just hurt you. The music is fantastic. The graphics are clever, the gameplay is variate, the story is one of the best.
This one is on the best games that I have played in the recent years.. And could easily win against all the AAA titles that have been released this year so far. Undertale knows very well when to joke and make you cry. It also knows everything.

I feel like Undertale is such a game, while nothing entirely new it presents a fresh set of mechanics and ties them together in a unique way while telling a story that's compfortable somewhere between Earthbound and My Little Pony. And let's be entirely honest here, if someone had asked be if that could work out, i would had lughed at him then got a cup of tea to spat it in the persons face and then laughed some more. But in the end, Undertale turned out to remain in my personal Top list of RPGs right next to Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore. And that's quite something to archive out of nowhere.

Undertale can give you quite a few of different experiences. It can either be a joyful comedy or get dark pretty fast. If you can get over the retro graphics and you're into the things mentioned above, then this game might be for you.

For the introspective soul, this is a title that will both warm your heart and keep you up at night. It will make you laugh, it might make you cry, but most importantly, it will make you think.

Some of the reviews here seem to be from people who have never played games in this style before, which is fine, it definately will not catch for everyone, and is very much a nod to classic RPG's. If you are expecting the wonderful world of the Witcher 3, and the complex combat mechanics of Mass Effect, then look elsewhere. This is an adventure to be had when you want to chill out.

Undertale takes everything wrong with traditional JRPGs (bloating, grinding, mind numbing combat that relies heavily on pressing the same button over and over until special enemies or bosses come around) and turns them on their heads. I'd have scored this higher if they'd brought the premise of the game into 2015 with an updated graphic style and a few compelling twists on the genre, but it by and large does not.

It takes Earthbound elements and turns them into an entirely different thing. It has fantastic writing, fantastic music, amazing storyline, and it will make you rethink the way you play games.
Trust me, after you've finished it, you will never see an RPG the same way again. And you'll want to replay it. Over, and over, and

And you'll want to replay it. Over, and over, and over again. Because every little thing you do has a different outcome. Even stuff like saving and going back and redoing something, the game has flavor text for that. The sheer amount of thought that went into this game is amazing.

And the ending... OH MAN, THE ENDING...

...just play it. If for nothing else, for the story. You can always choose to ignore stuff and get right to the point, if you want. I'm not sure I'd recommend that, but then again... it's your choice. That's kind of a theme here, I don't know if you noticed.

One of the best games I've ever played. It's up there with Mass Effect 2 and Dishonoured. I haven't stopped listening to the soundtrack since I played it.

Frankly, it's clear some of these reviews are coming from people who simply want to be contrarian. Pretty petty.

I didn't cry while playing this game, but I damn well teared up. The game feels like a throwback to games I grew up with. I almost felt like an enthused child again. There is much love put into this game. It breaks the fourth wall from the start, and it doesn't stop.

I still ended up feeling hollow when it was over. I wanted more, but I suppose all good things must come to an end.

The downsides can be that the game can be very hard and frustrating, and solutions are sometimes so obscured that they don't feel like an option. It sometimes sort of tells you that you cannot do a thing, and the solution is to do just that thing. But in the end, those things are all worth it.

Modern Earthbound, probably the greatest RPG of the decade. Perhaps the art might not be your style, but give the game (or the demo!) ten minutes of your time, if you're not too tired from laughing, you'll have yourself a great game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This essay is as non-spoiler-y as possible until a paragraph later on. I'll let you know before hand if you want to keep your experience garden fresh.
It's very strange for me to be writing a legitimate review on just about any game, but I feel that Undertale is an exception to the rule in the fact that although it is extremely flawed, the parts that make up the whole are incredibly charming and amazing in more ways than a rational human being should imagine.

Mechanically, it's really not the most amazing thing in the world. When you break it down, the fighting system is entirely timing based and the mercy system a more intuitive version of the part-time barista minigame in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. But where it shines is how exactly it uses this admittedly bland system to make many fights their own little events. The best example I can give without being too spoiler-y is one of the main boss battles, in which you're confronted by someone who's been chasing your tail for quite a while, but you manage to escape every time. How do you win peacefully against this rather determined figure? By running away of course!

The story, to be honest, is very weird and sometimes a bit convoluted. A few plot points hinge on smaller details, and unless you're meticulous, you might just miss them. It is rather amusing, however, and if you can keep up you're in for one hell of a ride. The best part about the story is, again, how it twists itself to fit the situation. It remembers everything you do. If you think I'm joking, I'm not. It remembers if you accidentally hurt someone and tried to go back so you didn't do it again. It remembers if you lied to someone, how you reacted, IF you hurt someone...

If anything shines directly and without remorse, it's the artistic presentation in three mediums; the writing, the art, and the music. Every character is a /character/. If you fight them, their fighting animation is unique to them and them alone. Their speech patterns are never shared unless they're more minor NPCs, and every major character has a personalized Bebebese they say with their lines. But even minor characters have some serious personality, such as the odd Vegetoid or the Temmies. Settings are, indeed, settings. The look and feel of each area, from the Ruins to Hotland, varies drastically. You can feel the freezing cold or sweltering heat, the water spraying onto the rocks or even the eerie silence of a hopeless city. The music made me cry. No, seriously. Near the end of the game I was bawling like a child, and I cried again the day after completing it. The music is just gorgeous.

But if there's anything I want to praise louder than anything is the tone of the entire experience. For reference, my first run was Pre-Pacifist and my second was True, so I got the fluffy end of the stick. For those of you taking the No Mercy run first, you will not have the same experience. In fact your experience will be drastically different and could reshape the entire game for you, and that's part of what I like about it. The game, as I experienced it, is one of becoming more than the sum of yourself. I know it sounds weird but hear me out.

Here's where the spoilers kick in, so skip this if you don't want to be spoiled.

At the end of the True Pacifist run, you have to fight someone in particular who not only sucked up six of the seven human souls needed to break the barrier, but literally every monster soul in the entirety of the caverns. You cannot beat this boss with violence. Your attacks always miss him and his defense is infinity. What you can do is hope and dream with all your essence that you can persevere, and eventually you discover even this was not enough. You cannot defeat this boss on your own. Instead, you reach out to your friends souls, the ones that you made along the way, and free them. Each of them are just as you remember from before, but it is only after you remind them that what they were is not all they can be, and that you can be a part of them, that they truly snap out of their trance. Finally, then, you can reach out to the one who took them in the first place, and ask him if you can be a part of him too. It's an amazing, touching, epic moment, and it spoke to the small, afraid ten year old me inside that was still making these mistakes. It hit me right there.

Spoilers over!

If this was any other game, without its charm and compassion to do something just a bit different, Undertale would be mediocre at best. The music and art save it from being trash, and the characters would bump up the experience, but the combat and story would still be a slog. As it is, however, Undertale is what it strives to teach; you can make those mistakes. You are greater than the sum of your parts. Remember those who taught you that, and you will go far in life.

Or you can just kill everyone and have a really bad time. Your choice, really.

If you possess any measure of empathy or compassion to connect with the games you play, this game will pay back your emotional investment in its world and characters back a thousandfold.

But even if you don't, and play games like a detached sociopath plays with a box of toys, deriving joy by tearing apart what others have lovingly built, it has you covered as well, you lucky devils.

The graphics, although unusual seeming at first, really begin to grow on you as you continue playing, to the point where now, I can't even imagine any other way it could have been done.
The music is excellent, wonderfully composed, like the game itself, running the spectrum of joyful mirth, fierce conflict, and beautiful despair.
The gameplay is innovative and well balanced. Going the non-combat route is absolutely recommended if you are interested in game design.

It may be one of the best uses for 10 dollars right now. Period.

I would say it's more profound than its idol, EarthBound, and I would say the story's more meta elements are certainly clever and fun to mess with, but it probably won't change your life. And it doesn't need to. It just needs to be an inventive and unique experience.

I really don't have any complaints about this game. I just like it all.

It's chock-filled with likable, memerable and friendly characters. Characters you'd wish were real, characters you wish you could just jump right into that world and hug and stay with.

It may be hard to believe such a statement when the graphics of this game are so simplistic, don't ever let the graphics of this game take you away from it.

The music is quite akin to that of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and what's more is that it uses the main theme in over songs just like PMD too. The music plays an absolutely ginormous role in this game, and for those of you that have been to the location that plays the song 'Undertale', yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Throat closes up even listening to it while writing this.

The game is quite short, you could finish it in a day. But it's not the length of the game that matters, it's the experience. It's the experience you yourself as a person, as an individual, as a player and as a character in the world of Undertale, that is what matters. This game will suck you in, this game will make you laugh, this game will make you cry, this game will make you think, and most importanly this game will teach you that fighting is not always the answer.

This game needs attention, it needs to be noticed by all those who enjoy games, it's beautiful. It's easily indie game of the year in my opinion, and is my absolute 100% game of the year.

Play Undertale. You won't regret it.

There is very little you can say about this game without spoiling anything. But I'll give the basic rundown.

+AMAZING finger-snapping soundtrack that blends 8 bit and 16 bit MIDI of the past with the recorded instrumentals of today, to create something nostalgic yet fresh and never-before-heard.
+Well-written, witty dialogue and likeable characters.
+Deep, extremely meta storyline that will tear you apart guaranteed.
+Sweet, dark, and funny.
+Simple graphics that belie the true nature of the game.
+Innovative hybrid gameplay where your actions will have consequences, even across playthroughs.
+Chock-full of secrets that nobody's found yet as of this writing, much more to see past the main story if you have the patience to find it.
+Hella replay value.
+Nightmare fuel!!
And if you care about this stuff...
+Canon lesbian couple.
+Canon gender-neutral protagonist.

-Rather short, a playthrough can take 4-6 hours.
-One path is rather tedious, but the lore it contains is worth it IMHO.
-You will never want to leave.

I always said to people that Mass Effect is my favourite game of all time. It now has very strong competition. If not the world's most perfect game, it's definitely worth considering when the time comes to pick the year's best.

This game really surprised me, I did not hear of this game before its release and I really did not think I would enjoy it. I never really liked RPG type games but this game is absolutely astonishing and has brought a amazing take on the RPG genre. Before you read more about this game you should really play it first because it WILL change your perception on games and maybe even life itself. Its got beautifully simple retro graphics and one of the best sound tracks I've ever heard in my life (Even though it is just chiptune music).

The fighting mechanic is what really sets this game apart since you don't have to murder anybody and the world around you will change in a variety of different ways which will leave you feeling guilty or proud of yourself. The game also has an un-necessary amount of detail, almost everything in the game world has a few lines written about it when you interact with it.

This game is absolutely full of moments will will leave you in tears and laughing for a long time, and will change your playstyle for all other games. It has the best replay value I have ever seen in a game and it will leave you hooked for a long time, forcing you to try and find all the little secrets the game has. This game puts ALL other AAA games to shame and is made by an indie developer with 1/1000th of a budget that a normal developer has, and still manages to blow them out of the water.

Toby Fox clearly understands what makes a RPG great, and understands the many flaws that the genre harbors and channeled all that knowledge into Undertale.

The theme the game carries is being a 'friendly RPG' where killing is totally unnecessary and your choice alone. It's a theme that's more than just conventional and runs deep into the core, and works absolutely wonderfully and results in extremely great encounters and dialogue.

Nothing in Undertale feels like a drag. Everything has been put into the game for very specific purposes, and it almost feels like Toby Fox thought of every possible outcome when working on the game. It's mind blowing.

It sounds like I'm just nerding out and gushing about the game, but it really is that fantastic. The flaws that I have are purely nitpicks and do nothing to ruin what the game pushes forward. NPCs could look more lively and I would've loved to see more of the world it presents, amongst other things. All just little tiny nitpicks.

The sad thing is, talking about many of the things that make Undertale the fantastic game it is would require spoiling the experience itself. However, to put it in short... I don't believe I'll ever be able to play another RPG the same way again after experiencing Undertale.

That doesn't change what this game did right though, and it does enough right that it should be a must play title for anyone that enjoys adventure or JRPG titles.

This game possesses more creativity than any AAA title out there, whether in dialogue, story, game play or even detail. A living testament the quality of the game is in its substance, and not in the graphics. A clear case of game of the year, and a breath of fresh air: actual effort and heart placed in a game.

A friendly advice. go play the game blind. Don't spoil yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay. first off, I have to say that while I recommend this game, I didn't liked it as much as other people do. The reasons are lying in details. So I will do like this: Point out the game srongest points for people who have not played it aand my personal net picks for people who have played it. By no means I think this game is overrated or not so good (after all, not each game is capable of curing deppresion or change your life) , but there are some points that I would like to talk about. Here we go.
+ Combat is very original. I really liked negotation system in shin megami tensei series, but this gamee has one of the best interpritaions of it.
+ The cast is memomerable and likeable, also there is a lot of character development.
+ Jokes are very very funny and original as well.
+ Replay value is very high
+ Boss battles are super fun and origignal. Too bad that tere are no boss rush mode.
+ Replay Value is high, although it depends from your position towards the game's message
+ Exploration and backtraking are rewarding, wich is good because I really like to backtrack if some of the location design has changed later on
+ I personally think that game is not that short, because you really should try to rush it throught to complete it in 6 hours.
+ While I persinally think that it is hared to listen soundtrack outside of the game, it's awesome and fitting to any moments.
In fact, there are a lot more positive points, but these are done their best to catch an eye

Now let's talk about things that I personally dislike. There is high chance that you will not notice them, but I have.
- The game really likes to strip your choices at some points, especially toward your cell. I found the telephone number of some monster but the game tells me "You decided not to call". Royal Scientist upgraded it so that I now connected to the social net, but I can't use It! There are only 3 characters I can call, wich is Toriel, Papyrus and Undyne. To make matters worse, Toriel will be available only at the very begining and the very end, while Papyrus and Undyne are united into pair so I can call them oonly at once, and, basically, they are only characters who can provide moral support.
- Silent protagonist. There are a lot of moments where I wanted to see his reaction, but alas.
- The story gets really really confusing towards the end.
- 4th wall breaking moments are confusing as well.
- I have not cried at all. Yes, there were moments of sadness, but because game so likes to throw jokes on you, at some points it hard to tell, whenether it wants to make you cry or laught or scared.
- Lore is unecessary complicated
- True ending.
Now let's talk about last aspect more detailed.
1) While other people during the final battle were crying, I personally almost commited suicide with facepalm. Who ever thought that fusing Flowey and Asriel into one character was a good idea? I was shouting like Konstantin Stanislavski "I don't believe it!" Asriel was presented as a mild and likeble character but Flowey is just opposite. And there is a very bad explanation about Asriel's changing of attitude. I can't take it seriously.
2) So, everyone is having fun while Asriel doomed with eternal punishment? Okay, I understand that I can not save him, but why the hell I can not at least make other characters pay there respect for it? And I don't care that it will broke their hearts, just let me do that, game!!!
3) A lot of plot holes are risen because of that ending. Why Asgore and Toriel have not ralised how evil was their adopted human son? How the body of their (by the way, why everyone refering to Chara/Frisk "They" and not "Him"?) is mystically warps form the village to coffin to ruins? Why Chara's soul decided to corrupt Frisk and not other fallen humans? Is Frisk is so special? Or what?
If you dont't agree with me, feel free to bash me with dislikes, but I was have to spoke all the thoughts that I had in mind.

Anyway, again: If you have not played this game -- I can safely recommend it to you. Like all others.

I have to state that i rather prefer role playing games that are a lot more visual. I have not grown up in the old computer days with NES or Atari - so i do not feel the nostalgia or so when encountering those games.

Now - the most important part of a RPG is most certainly the characters and their story - and the game delivers ... very well! I do not know how it works - but there are games where you instantly feel a connection to the characters ... you actually instantly kind of "like" them - and care for them. (even the evil ones) ... and then there are games where you simply never feel the connection (and of course there is the in-between).

Untertale ... well... for some reason i instantly liked the setting and character(s) - even if they are presented in utmost ugliness.

Here is also where i draw the line. It may sound (and might actually be) superficially - but i do not think that the art-style is beneficial for the game. I can see the game made in a low res art-style ... but not in Atari 2600 era style - but rather a low res VGA style. So it seems like the art team was simply not able to provide.
Visuals are an important part of a RPG - which is kind of a visual novel with more interaction than what nowadays goes for "visual novel" i guess. So .. great character(s), great story - and an easy 10/10 ... but for ME ... the presentation brings it down a significant notch. (on the basis of a low budget game that is ... if it was a AAA title - even the story would not be a 10/10 - cause i expect more complexity from such a budget)

The battles, such as they are, combine some of my favorite features of both the Mother and Shin Megami games (chatting, rather than just immediately brawling, with humorously designed weirdos and outcasts).

The game's key selling point is its gentle kindheartedness. It has a sort of quirky sentimentality that it earns through your interactions with the bizarre denizens of the game world, but which is also buffeted by the beautiful soundtrack and soft, simple visuals. There is also the general goofiness, which I wouldn't say is side-splitting hilarity, but which made me smile and just generally feel good. I'd recommend this game to fans of Studio Ghibli and the Mother series, but try it yourself of course (as with anything, liking one does not necessitate liking the others). For what it's worth, I thought this game was touching, memorable, and a lot of fun to play through.

I know I'll be getting MGSV and Fallout 4 before the end of the year, and I have no doubts that Xenoblade Chronicles X will wow me, but I'm overjoyed that I spent a weekend with this beautiful little gem that I'll no doubt return to time and again.

It's a nice game, interesting breaks in the fourth wall. But ultimately a shallow universe of twists in convention and narrative tricks. I wouldn't be pointing these out if it wasn't for the overwhelmingly positive reviews it has gotten so far. I think we need a few more level-headed reviewers to bring the score down to something a bit more reasonable.

I worry that I will overhype this. I went in blind, not knowing too much, and the experience was all the richer for it - so please, go play Undertale and experience it for yourself. If you have, then read on for my full impression.

--

This game has moved me like no game ever before it, even those few I hold precious to me - this game is at once nostalgic yet unrelentingly modern, culturally a product of our times but with the trappings of older games at first glance. I desperately want to replay it, yet the game itself leaves me in a such a state I'm not sure I can. It has been several days since I completed it, and it still holds a ludicrously powerful emotional sway over me, something incredibly uncharacteristic for me. It's genuinely overwhelming, to the point I can't write this review as an analytical or objective thing - it's a moving work. It'll challenge your notions of what constitutes a game. It's genuinely funny and genuinely sad. It's a piece of art that surpasses anything I could have dreamt of. At times it is languid and calm, at times rapid and exciting - it dabbles with reference humour, but never indulges in it. It pulls no cheap tricks besides music - and if music to inspire the emotions is cheating, then this game cheats extraordinarily well.

I can't carry on right now, so I'm just going to throw this 'review' out there as it is - an emotional impression of the game by someone left enraptured, blissed and devastated by it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know people are gushing about the atmosphere, charm, humor, etc. And this game has it in spades, as well rocking music and great visuals. I think that's been sufficiently emphasized already.

But the thing is the game can be picked the f*** apart. Whenever I think it's just a generic (though well executed) plot development or world element, even with the ending, if I explored a bit, looked for all the item descriptions, interactions, endings, gameplay variations, how and when you save your game, you find a whole bunch of **** about the background story, subtle character details, the nature of the world and how it relates to the game itself reminiscent of Elder Scroll's Chim, or Homestuck (which for obvious reasons I imagine is a more direct inspiration). IT's all stuff you enjoy finding more than having it blatantly presented to you- and the innocent, whimsical and whacky veneer just makes it that much cooler that this stuff is at its core.

Regarding the morality system, even though the "true ending" is
the one that absolutely ideal morally, all the mixed endings have those aforementioned small details that still make them worth playing, or at least reading about/watching to give a little bit more depth. And they all relate to each other in world as well- [spoilers] basically time travel. And while this isn't a totally original concept for games dealing with saves/newgames, and there aren't nearly as many little tidbits regarding this overarching story, it's some of the more interesting stuff, as it relates back to a single trio and a mysterious force, that one can gradually trace back to a large portion of the games happenings, as well as the nature of an unexpectedly judicial entity throughout all of them, with enough digging.

But the biggest impact is what is essentially the alternate route, genocide- note: IMO you should DEFINITELY do this after getting the true ending. It has drastically more difficult bosses (I don't think you should play Undertale if gameplay is a HUGE priority for you, it's more of a sum of it's parts kind of game. But if you are looking for a challenge from this game, definitely aim for this route at some point-note, it's not necessarily just killing every enemy you see). A lot of plot points won't make sense. The persistent save that allows the "timeline overarching" story elements will permanently alter the true end (in a small, but significant way)- but most of all the effect of doing it after playing through the world as you know it once was makes the impact that much greater.
I don't want' to spoil the effect, but the route essentially does what very few games, let alone simpler indie ones, accomplish- being entirely evil does not feel like failing to be the games hero. It feels like successfully being the apocalypse. And this route is incorporated seamlessly, not only into the worlds lore, but also back to the aforementioned three central figures. And the difference in tone is so well and subtly executed it actually made me queasy, which in this case is a plus.

This is pretty long, but I really wanted to capture some of the really unique, but not immediately evident qualities of this game, b/c a lot of people are essentially writing it off as tumblr/meme circle jerking. And I sort of know what's provoking this reaction, as it does lie very heavily in that area of the internet tone/humor spectrum, and these tropes are very often abused or self absorbed mutations passed around a la the circle jerk that spawns them. But let's not pretend that all communities and all individuals aren't capable of doing that with any kind of humor/tone, nor that there aren't legitimately GOOD ways of executing and presenting these qualities that inspired the abuse to begin with.

But even disregarding kneejerk reactions towards the lingering scent of your "outgroup"- know that people who like games, classic games, niche games, are playing this because it has a certain substance to it, that if not objectively good, or even something you enjoy, is at least something that you appreciate it exists. This guy put in work, he didn't advertise himself or blatantly appeal to a key audience. This game is crafted. Not necessarily for you, and therefore there will be those who dislike it, and those who don't have positive experiences. That's to be expected.

It's not a cash in. That's outright ignorant. To those who say it is a failure of x-genre, or y-precedent, it more often than not is trying to be x or y. By my interpretation anyway.
That's my response too most extremely negative reviews.

As for the positive ones- they might be a bit too glowing, to the point where they start to lack credibility, and play into the whole "it's just a dumb fad" perception many detractors have. But they do come from a place I agree with. It's a good game. It's been a while since I've gotten so into one, not because it's necessarily deeper than the rest, but b/c its simplicity draws you in unexpectedly.

Undertale is an amazing game, one which a variety of different players would enjoy. It has a strong Earthbound vibe, with its combination of surreal, quirky humor and heart-crushing moments.

The main gimmick of the game is it is a turn-based RPG where you do not need to kill anyone. Every monster, including bosses, can be spared. This has a direct impact on the story. Whether you kill

Whether you kill everyone or no one gives you an entirely different gameplay experience. This doubles the length of the game, which allows it to have a decent length.

The graphics have that nice retro feel, the story is amazing, the cast of characters is superb, and the gameplay is good and unique for a turn-based RPG. All of this, made on a budget that could at the most buy a ham sandwich. Truly a testament that money does not create a perfect game.

No joke, the most heart warming and wrenching experience I have ever had with a video game. After finishing it, it stayed with me. I even bought this game for a few people I don't know just so that they might experience it for themselves. It is hard to go in depth about the game without spoiling anything and this review is aimed at those who are thinking about picking this up, so JUST DO IT! Great game play, enough variation and charm to keep you interested through and through, wonderful story that will leave you in tears whether its from laughing or deciding to chop onions while playing. Seriously, I'm not REALLY crying. Jokes aside, prepare yourself for the experience of a lifetime. Do yourself a favour and play this game. Tell your friends, and then play it with them. Its a story worth experiencing 100 times. Expand

Never do I feel that there is a wasted moment in Undertale. Not in the writing, characters, etc.

Never.

This game is so undeniably pure, that you just have to stop and admire it.

It does not have anything to say on the state of modern video games. It did not invent meta references. It doesn't even try to be heartfelt or touching.

The Stanley Parable deconstructed gameplay mechanics and the nature of player decisions in a far more meaningful way.
Spec Ops: The Line had more to say and contemplate on senseless killing than a genocide run of Undertale.
To The Moon ACTUALLY explored themes like love, loss, joy and sentimentality.
Braid provides a much deeper analysis of gameplay tropes and philosophy.

Yet these are things reviewers are claiming Undertale has in spades. Normally when I dislike a critically acclaimed game, I can at least appreciate why people loved it, I just can't seem wrap my head around this one, it all feels like some social experiment or joke that I'm not in on. It doesn't help that negative reviews are being downvoted and deleted.

If you're wondering about the folks who gave this game zero - Take a look at their review history. That should tell you what you need to know.

As for the game... you won't regret it. It's full of so much charm, heart and life. It will endear itself to you without you even being aware, until it's got you by the heartstrings.

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
