This game is the pinnacle of open world gaming. So many fleshed out factions. The game economy is engrossing and well thought out as well. I remember 3rd person basically being immersion breaking in Morrowind. Because your character looked like it was moonwalking. LOL. In Starfield The Lipsyncing is great and in 3rd person your character is firmly planted to the ground and perfectly positioned. To finally make 1st and 3rd person options equally viable ways to play. From the first mission on Kreet I was hooked absorbing all the environmental storytelling about the Terrormorph. And then joining the Vanguard and getting an Aliens 3 styled Quest right from the start. The game is incredible. Todd Howard and his fantastic team really made the game of a generation. And I thank them for it. Expand

Starfield is one of the few games that immerses you in a unique environment. Comparing it to Starcitizen or No mans Sky is unfair, starfield has a different atmosphere and mechanics. It is an excellent game. I've been playing it for 83 hours and it's very addictive.

Bethesda is back to what they do best, making wonderful game worlds for people to do there thing in. I wanted to be slick talking space cowboy and I have been able to do that more than I was expecting!

The game does have issues, such as the map and UI being trash and performance needing improvement, but everything else is top notch. This is my second favorite game of the year for 2023, behind Baldurs Gate 3.

Have played 52 hours of Starfield so far and LOVE IT! Bethesda is back baby!

If you'd like to play a videogame where you have fun, playing a Bethesda game is one of best bets, and Starfield is now the best Bethesda game (although Oblivion will always have a special place in my heart). If you prefer to have Sony spend millions in motion capture to hide the fact that the gameplay in most of their games, the only thing that should actually matter, is just not fun... fine, go play that, just leave the reviews alone.

A lot of great fun exploring, shooting on the ground, and shooting in space. It has an amazing starship builder tool to build your unique spaceship.

    Pros:
    • The game is huge, I'm typically finishing games within 100 hours, but I'm 120 hours in and still barely explored the game.
    • Great side quests that feel like main quests.
    • Great selection of weapons.
    • Impactful skills that help me to focus on exploration rather than shooting everything.
    • Powerful custom spaceship builder.
    • Amazing sound and music, I mean it's so good I keep music in the background for my work.
    • Interesting sci-fi story with space explorers, space pirates, political struggle, aliens, and artifacts.

    Cons:
    • Graphics look dated on the console, like 4 years dated.
    • Characters don't have depth to them.
    • A lot of recycled content in different locations.
    • Too many loading screens and loading is slow even on fast SSD.

    1. Offensively substandard performance for graphics that look at least 10 years out of date 2. 2. Overt political agendas in a futuristic world that just happen to identically match political agendas currently being pushed in the modern day. This is not how you immerse players in a mysterious futuristic world. This is how you pull them back into reality and break their immersion.

    3. Insultingly poorly implemented AI that doesn't react at all when you point a weapon or shoot near it.

    4. Clunky, intern-level dialog that seems like it was written to appeal to 11 year olds living in the early 90's.

    5. Boilerplate-level questing. It genuinely seems like the developers were given an strong directive to intentionally avoid entertaining the player.

    6. New game plus means playing the game 10 more times except without caring about drops because you already have the best stuff. Except you don't even have a compelling reason to play through the game even once.

A lot of people have spent years deciding they're in love with this extremely mediocre, bland, soulless game and are currently in a state of severe cognitive dissonance.

This game is completely and utterly devoid of the sense of magic and wonder that makes games like Baldur's Gate 3 overwhelmingly eclipse it in sales and review scores. Corporations need to start learning that real profitability comes from respecting their customers instead of intentionally misleading them.

Starfield is possibly the most disappointing game of this generation. It doesn't know what it wants to be a space sim or an rpg, as a result what you get is a small version of superior titles. Not to mention the horrible facial animations, and empty worlds. The only redeeming factor is you can basically play it for $1 on Gamepass.

the game isn't optimized, they've deliberately worsened NVIDIA's GPU performances because Microsoft has a deal with AMD so in turn my 4070TI (which can run other, much better looking games at Ultra everything with RT 4K) can't even break 100 FPS at 1080p, even with DLSS mods (which again they've cut out of the game because it is NVIDIA tech) i'm getting a mid experience fidelity wise.the game isn't optimized, they've deliberately worsened NVIDIA's GPU performances because Microsoft has a deal with AMD so in turn my 4070TI (which can run other, much better looking games at Ultra everything with RT 4K) can't even break 100 FPS at 1080p, even with DLSS mods (which again they've cut out of the game because it is NVIDIA tech) i'm getting a mid experience fidelity wise.

as for the actual game, it is a Bethesda game, it is the same stagnant gameplay loops with some bells and whistles attached.

as someone who admittedly likes Bethesda games i have to say that this space frontier setting doesn't lend itself well to the Bethesda gameplay loop because most of the world is instanced into hubs rather than a seamless open world experience.

for instance in Skyrim we all know that "see that mountain? you can walk over there" trope, in Starfield that same mountain is behind an invisible wall and you need to fast travel there, there are no more landmarks that dot the horizon, all the handcrafted content are in fact copy pasted POI's that you'll find on every planet, all the magic is gone because they've went and procedurally generated everything.

i give this a 0 just because of what it represents: complacency and laziness, "there are over 1000 planets for you to explore!" wow, 1000 planets filled with literally nothing, what a fun premise for a game, please make TES6 just one open world map filled with crafted content and leave the procedurally generated stuff to NMS, please and thank you.

The only downside I can find so far is that the game lacks in performance. You need a really good GPU/CPU to have acceptable fps. A DLSS mod did make it more playable for me and I'm almost always around 60 fps outdoors and 90 fps indoors. It would however be nice if they implement DLSS natively.
I'm sure they will improve performance over time, so for me so far it is a solid 9/10 game, If they improve performance, it will be a 10/10

The game is definitely not a 1-5 rating, nothing it does is absolutely awful, it's just the not much it does is particularly great and many people are disappointed with that and, as usual with the internet, this creates extreme reactions of either massively underrating the game or being defensive and overrating it.

Many peoples defense of the game is that there is so much you can do, whilst this is definitely true the inevitable retort to that is that not much of it is particularly well done. Whilst a few things Stand out amongst the rest, such as ship building which does have flaws but you may find yourself spending a massive chunk of your time on, much of the game falls flat. Generic and underwhelming combat, uncomfortable uncanny valley NPC interactions making the average voice acting and pretty vanilla personalities feel even worse and a slow to start storyline that you can tell is aiming to make the game feel large but largely falls flat not helped by one of the most strangely implemented fast travel systems I've ever come across? For a game that sold itself partly on the idea of exploration and immersion the decision to give the ability at times to travel from the very deepest part of an enemy lair on an obscure planet in a far out solar system to sometimes the front door of the quest giver on a planet light years away at the touch of a button and one loading screen seems wildly at odds with the experience I thought the developers were trying to create. This leaves one of the key parts of the game, space exploration, navigation and combat feeling quite disjointed and half baked.

In my 25 hours so far of trying to stick with the game after being repeatedly told it gets better, sometimes rather patronisingly by some more vehement defenders of the game that seem to think people not enjoying the first 12 hours is their problem and that they're somehow not entitled to an opinion until they enjoy the game, my overall experience can be best described as underwhelmed. Starfield feels like it got so lost on offering options that it forgot to make many of them memorable or Unique. Many people pinned some massive hopes on the game and the fact that's it playable and not a terrible experience seems enough for them to very strongly and rather arrogantly defend the game causing people who are dissatisfied or who were overhyped to strongly overreact and over critique the game. Whilst the game may gradually improve and become a better experience thanks to modders I don't feel this should really influence the rating of the game as it's sets a strange precedent for game designers and their decision making, therefore landing the game at 7.5 for me after a slow start that does get better with time and experience.

Edit: I'm now at the 36 hour mark and I'm done. I tried to stick with it, I tried switching up what I was doing every time I got really bored but the game is just so poorly paced whenever you try following any of the quests and the writing genuinely seems to get worse. It did get a little better in the middle of my experience but then it dropped off even more, I just find myself bored and frustrated so no I know the game is not for me... Dropped my score by one point as I feel if the game were really a 7 I could at least bring myself to finish the main story.

Doing my part to fight off the typical Bethesda Bashers.

It’s an amazing game, it requires a bit of maturity to appreciate it as it’s not over the top like a lot of games now a days.

If you go in looking for faults you will find them, but if you can move past those there is a galaxy of incredible content

generic looter shooter and souless rpg where space, the ship and planets are visual or cosmetic rather than actual fleshed out content. Next gen was marketed, next gen pricing was applied but last gen content was delivered. More time spent in loadingscreens, inventory management and fast travel menu's than actual engaging ship and exploration gameplay.

Starfield is likely Bethesda's best game since Oblivion. However, it has some issues like performance issues on PCs, no DLSS support, and no surface vehicles. During my 100 hours of playtime, I only found 4 minor bugs. The typical Bethesda jank is still present, such as NPCs walking in your face during a dialogue scene. The gunplay is by far Bethesda's best. Although the loading screens are common, they only take 1-2 seconds, so they are not a big issue. Furthermore, not being able to fly down to the surface of a planet is not a significant drawback because you would get nothing from it - I say this as someone who has put over 150 hours in No Man's Sky and about 30 hours in Star Citizen.

The exploration in Starfield is quite unique compared to other Bethesda games. It's hard to explain, but the game's exploration is more vertical than horizontal. You will either love it or hate it. Unlike other Bethesda games, where you might see something in the distance and go to it, in Starfield, it's different. I enjoyed the main story more than any past Bethesda game, and I've played everything from Morrowind to Fallout 4. Starfield is more of an RPG than Fallout 4, but less of an RPG than Morrowind or Baulders Gate 3.

TLDR: It's a good game if you like Bethesda RPGs and space, have a good PC, and are willing to pay $70 for a game. But it's not GOTY or as good of an RPG as Baulders Gate 3.

Bethesda had the chance to craft a masterpiece, but...

-Game Engine: Just another patch. Same bugs, same emotionless faces, same camera angles... A part of me feels like I'm replaying Fallout 4/Skyrim but with spaceships. -AI: An "artificial intelligence" where the "intelligence" part is notably missing. -Difficulty: When you ramp up the game's difficulty, all you get is enemies

-AI: An "artificial intelligence" where the "intelligence" part is notably missing.

-Difficulty: When you ramp up the game's difficulty, all you get is enemies with more health that turn into bullet sponges.

-Spaceships: Extremely simplistic spaceship combat, plus you can't travel freely. This makes spaceship customization wholly irrelevant and merely cosmetic.

-Content: Many entirely empty planets, and yes, I understand it's a game set in space, which is mostly void... but above all, it's a game. And a game with so much empty content is a mediocre game. Period.

-Narrative: Nothing standout. Characters lack charisma.

    - Technical Aspects: Poor optimization. No native HDR support. No native DLSS support. No Ray Tracing. Technically, it's like a 2010 Indie game.

Despite everything, the game is enjoyable, and I'm having a good time playing it. However, I can't turn a blind eye to Bethesda's laziness and complacency.

I also saw a couple of professional reviews that said some worrying things , about the game failing to be a proper Bethesda game , due to how many planets , they weren’t filled with content , but also failing to be a No man’s sky due to everything being behind loading screen.

I’m glad to report they were wrong.

It’s a Bethesda game through and through.
You’ll be bombarded , by such a high volume of side quests , and side quests between the side quests , that you’ll explore a lot of what this universe has to offer (and it has A LOT to offer) without even noticing.

There is such a massive amount of handcrafted content , and planet locations…That you’ll really see no reason (or have no time) to spend 20 minutes running on a straight line to see if there are invisible walls somewhere.

On my 68 hours of gameplay , I haven’t once stumbled upon this infamous invisible walls , and I have been exploring a lot.

I’m not saying they aren’t there , I’m saying that the only way you will break your “immersion” on starfield , is if you are looking for it. Lookign for flaws , trying to look behind the curtain.

I repeat I’m 68 hours in and i feel I have barely scratched the surface.

I haven’t even got serious with the mining stuff.

Starfield has achieved to scratch 2 big itches simultaneously for me:

I have been wanting an space game.
And I have been wanting a Bethesda game.

And starfield is good at both things.

-Jumping on a rocky moon with low gravity , watching the stars and galaxies above you and suddenly see the gas giant with its huge rings appear above the Horizon, while starfield’s amazing soundtrack sounds in the background? Check.

-Having space fights , or boarding enemy spaceships and taking control of them? Check

-finding abandoned space stations/casinos/research facilities etc floating outside random planets , docking to them and having amazing 0 gravity fights with pirates or spacers or whatever is inside them?

-Rol playing whoever you want to be and However you want to be and create your own story like only Bethesda games let you? Check

Having a gazillion side quests , well written , original and non-repetitive ? Check

    Amazing atmosphere and story? Check

Good side characters and voice acting? Check

    Good graphics? Check

    Good ship creating and customization?
    Check check check

And most importantly, am I having a lot of fun and about to end this review without spell checking it Because I want to jump back into starfield?
    Check!

Having played 30+ hours so far I'm loving the game. I've hardly completed any of the main quest and just seem to end up doing random events and quests. Look at the clock and it's already 2am and where did the time go? I have feeling the game will just get better with time. I'm already running a few QoL mods from nexus which have really improved the experience for me.

I only expect the game to get better from here with support from the developer and community mods to enhance the game further. This could easily be a 9/10 or 10/10 later down the line.

Yes, there are some limitations on flight and you cannot fly directly to planets (like NMS) but I'd rather have this and a brief loading screen than empty planets with nothing to do on them. I've rather enjoyed the fast travel as a way to keep the action going rather than spending hours of my time just getting to my needed destinations.

Gunplay is surprisingly enjoyable for a Bethesda game and space combat has also been fun. Ship building takes it to the next level. I'm looking forward to sinking many more hours into this game.

Best space game ever made so far! This is what Star Citizen promises us to be, minus the tedious "sim" part of planetary landings.

I like the game a lot; it is fun and very engaging. It is not perfect; there are a lot of glitches, and planet exploration is not that good.

I have an RTX 3070 & a AMD 9 3900XT and the game runs fine for me. I'm level 33 now and have run into some bugs in the later parts of the game but all in all it's the best game I've played in years.

Starfield has its flaws, but it's a pretty good game. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is awesome so far, and the freedom to explore a vast universe is impressive. It's like Fallout, but in space!

It's a great game that suffers from outdated engine and terrible optimization on PC, with the CEO of the Bethesda just saiyng "upgrade your hardware" instead of fixing the problem. It feels like a beta version.

So I have waited for a long time for this game. Is there things that can be improved absolutely. The story is great, and the game is not near as buggy. I do wish there was less loading, but no different than Skyrim. Please don't listen to reviews of people who have never touched this masterpiece.

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
