    It's clear Bethesda do not evolve or improve at all, my hype for the next Elder Scrolls died with Starfield. Starfield also made it clear that Bethesda needs to take the creation engine 2 behind the barn and shoot it. Too many limitations and you will find the same bugs from previous titles in Starfield.

    Quick recap:
    Performance = Bad
    AI = Bad
    MainStory = Bad (booooring)
    Sidequests = 50/50 Ok/Bad
    Combat = Ok (but underwhelming)
    Sound = Ok (but underhwelming)
    Music = Good
    Immersion = Bad

    There is some ok to good parts in the game but overall very mediocre i would rate this 6/10. I wish modders wouldn't help Bethesda so they actually had to care about there own products in the future. Bethesda didn't even add FOV-slider or DLSS.

    Alright. I made a Metacritic account just to review this game. I want to start off by saying that I am playing on PC. I am using a 3060ti and a Ryzen 5 5600. Thats a fairly moderate combination, handles almost anything at high settings, 1080p or 1440p 60fps+. With that out of the way, this game is horribly optimized for PC. With that out of the way, this game is horribly optimized for PC. The performance is less than stellar, to say the least. There's some really strange choices made, like the fact that the game doesn't support exclusive full-screen or DLSS natively. Also, this game has crashed on me countless times. Visually the settings are pretty solid but there's not really that "woah..." moment you get like when you leave the prison in Oblivion. Texture work is good. Lighting and shadows are just fine. Overall the game feels far too graphically basic to be as demanding as it is. The character creation is fine. You can't make any super dumb, silly, jenky, oblong, green-skinned, freaks like you can in most other Bethesda games. That's a disservice to the experience in my opinion. Making those crazy created characters are part of the Bethesda charm and there really isn't much of that charm in Starfield.

    Starfield is simply not fun. I don't find the world or story interesting. NPCs feel lifeless and add nothing of substance to the game. In Skyrim and Oblivion, most NPCs are named individuals that go to work and have conversations with each other and often drop little hints of stuff you can go do in the game. In Starfield, there's countless times where I'd press E to speak to an NPC and they'd say "I'm sorry I'm busy". They're all nameless and so obviously lifeless NPCs and it's so uninteresting. When playing this game, I wish I was playing other games. I think about how I could be playing Oblivion or Skyrim or Fallout New Vegas, games with worlds that feel *real* and detailed. I think about how I'm also playing through one of the best RPGs I've ever played, Baldur's Gate 3. I often want to close my game and play that instead. Traversing this game is uninteresting.
    The idea that nearly all traversal is done through menus is absolutely unbelievable. They touted these giant worlds and this sprawling universe, but they all feel so disconnected? I so badly wanted to fly from one planet to another and actually land directly on that planets surface without having to go into a menu to do so. This is not an open world game. It has cities and strongholds that sit in their own little area and you have to use a menu to go to them, you can't walk from a city to an outpost. When you land in an area, that isn't a huge city, there's a small circle in which you can explore, after that it locks you into that small area. Want to explore more of the planet you're on? Go into a menu and land somewhere else on the planet. Flying in space is actually kind of fun, it's unfortunate that you can't really do much with it, it doesn't get you anywhere.

    Speaking of flying in space, the ship combat is kind of enjoyable, I don't completely hate it or anything. It's just that it gets boring and repetitive after the first few times you do it, it makes you not really want to do it anymore. Gun combat isn't awful either! I enjoy the gun combat! It feels good, it feels better than any Bethesda-developed game with guns. Comparing the combat in this game to Fallout 76, for example, the combat here is definitely more enjoyable. It's a shame that the early game enemies aren't cool by any means. It's all weird alien bug creatures and space-pirates.

    The one time in this game where I actually got excited and happy is when I was walking in New Atlantis and the adoring fan appeared! It was actually nice to see the little guy again, as annoying as he can be. The voice acting in this game is really good, the performances are great. The actors did a great job!

    Final thoughts:
    Starfield is bland and uninteresting and doesn't live up to the hype. I have un-installed it and will not be finishing it any time soon. I am doubtful that they will release any super meaningful updates, but if they do, maybe I'll check it out. If Cyberpunk got "fixed" maybe this game can too. If you want a good Bethesda game, play one of the classics we all know and love again. If you want a new sprawling RPG that is fun and let's you explore and do almost anything you want, play Baldur's Gate 3. If you want a good space game play No Man's Sky. I would be severely upset and would be filing for a refund if I paid the full-price of $69.99 USD for this release. Thankfully I only paid 16 dolars due to its Gamepass day-one integration. Would not recommend.

Starfield managed to delight and to surprise, even the main story is Bethesda's best one yet. Also, the vistas are hauntingly beautiful. I love Fallout 4 and Skyrim, but this is not a good game.

    This would have been a decent game in 2010 with regards to animation, graphics, story length, the little to no interface+display customization, bugs and so on. This is like Outer Worlds x Skyrim x ME: Andromeda, only worse in all categories. Anyone with a sane mind will not say this is better in any single way than Andromeda

    This would have been a decent game in 2010 with regards to animation, graphics, story length, the little to no interface+display customization, bugs and so on. This is like Outer Worlds x Skyrim x ME: Andromeda, only worse in all categories. Anyone with a sane mind will not say this is better in any single way than Andromeda which is now 6 years old. Those games appear to be 10 years apart, they almost are, just the wrong way around. Outer Worlds too is like 4-5 years old now, not a single thing in this game beats that, and that game had it fair share of problems.

    Imagine publishing a game they have used this much time on, resources, past achievements, money, huge studio and you forget to add brightness and gamma sliders??
    You forget to add a field of view slider, something games in 2008 had, it would literally take them 5 minutes to implement it and enhance the experience for all players by a lot and those who suffer from motion sickness will actually be able to play.
    You forget that almost all people want to play this in fullscreen with optional DLSS, free to choose HDAO/TXAA/SMAA and hopefully have a game this bad looking above 60 fps on a 4070tix13600k, but thats just too much to ask so we'll keep it windowed borderless running 50 fps and a medium/high/ultra slider instead different methods of anti-aliasing.
    Their most notorious problem is their garbage engines and carry weight / running stamina which makes a game made for hoarding absolute torture. They probably had this problem with FO3 in 2008 and every other game since, how can they not learn?

    Keep in mind that farming ores on planets is useless, you will never use the materials, they will weigh too much to carry, keep in mind that exploring planets is useless, there are close to zero if not zero npcs there and you have to run massive lengths most of the time over encumbered, not able to sprint for more than 3 seconds of the time and maybe you're lucky enough to have a talent in jetpacks with so bad physics it's actually better to leave it behind because of the weight, only to find an empty cave with materials you cant carry or an abandoned base full of loot weighing too much to carry. The combat system is as stiff and broken as Skyrim, FO4, there is nothing different at all. The weapons feel awful, all of the 20+ different I have tried. Oh and the main city looks disgusting.

    I have looked forward to this game for probably 3 years and what I got is an old looking, unpolished, perhaps too vast, empty, soulless, stiff, disappointing intro, tons of too long waiting animations, the wierdest mix of characters I have ever seen, 300 years ahead in time a colony that escaped earth is still talking with indian, african and east asian accents when speaking english which would obviously be the main language for hundreds of years (Hogwarts Legacy all over again), full of bugs, incredibly rough/uneven gameplay, garbage animation and graphics for an incredibly steep price and wait time. This should have been labeled as an Alpha project and cost 20-30 usd at most. It reminds me a lot of Fallout 76 only on a much larger scale and with npcs, sometimes.

    This game is Fallout 4, an 8 year old game only set in space. The flora, fauna and rock/shaders on planets are actually at times worse than FO4, at least there are modders that upscale the textures and fix the mountains of problems there, which we can only hope for in the future here.

    Hm, I wonder what I actually like about it. The dialogue scene close ups with people can be good, the idea of the game in space is good, but that's just in theory. The character customization was decent, some of the armor can look decent, some textures indoors can look good. Those who designed for example the landscape on a planet vs inside a building must be so far apart in talent it's mind boggling.

    Of course Meta Critic gives this game like 8-9-10/10 "incredible space journey, game of the year" though when the community reviews comes out tomorrow I'm sure we're looking at 4-5/10 depending how biased and realistic/optimistic you are.

    Will force myself to try it some more but not really enjoying any of it so far.

    I am NOT going to review the technical side of the game. It's not perfect, but, that said...it is by far the BEST Bethesda release I have played in my lifetime.

    Starfield is great. Simple. If you loved Skyrim, Fallout 4 you will love this. It's right there. The whole space aspect is more of a backdrop than a core mechanic. But it works (For me) and I am having the best time

    The best way to describe it is: 'It's Fallout 4 in Space" Basicly.

    I have had NO gamebreaking bugs. Game runs at a solid 40-50 FPS on my RTX3070. Is that perfect? hell no. BUt its playable. And I am certain that future patches and optimizations will bring that number up further.

    Lore is non existent in the outer worlds, when you clean an enemy outpost in other games there's always the story of how they ended up there, here it's just clean->loot and that's it. Creatures are not interesting at all. All the super complex mechanisms to research, craft, mod etc it's an overkill and useless at the end.

    But the truth is, the only way I could sum up my experience with Starfield is: BORING. Playing it feels like a chore for me, I can't wait to stop. I found myself creating the most creative excuses to avoid playing this game.
    If I could, I would return this game 10/10.

    P.S. FORGOT TO SAY: It's unplayable without NVIDIA Filters tool. Everything looks so green and gamma is so offset that it makes you wonder what's wrong with their developers monitors. You have to tweak your own filters in order to make this game look normal. Is this normal for a 2023 AAA game?

    starfield, bethesda's next gen game, the bethesda product with the longest years of development, let's start by talking about the graphics, the first thing that catches the eye, the environments are carefully constructed, with good design and good graphic quality, the character models are ok, not bad enough to bother but certainly far from being good, but now we come to one of the greatstarfield, bethesda's next gen game, the bethesda product with the longest years of development, let's start by talking about the graphics, the first thing that catches the eye, the environments are carefully constructed, with good design and good graphic quality, the character models are ok, not bad enough to bother but certainly far from being good, but now we come to one of the great sore points of the work, the facial animations, the characters are as expressive as a stone, sometimes they are so not very expressive that they become almost disturbing, this low quality ruins the experience, I wasn't able to get attached to anyone and scenes that could have been exciting were only boring or ridiculous, to this we add a complete lack of cutscenes and direction during the dialogues it doesn't improve the situation, the game lacks some graphic details that would serve to increase immersion, which is essential in games like this, the vegetation is poorly made, it doesn't interact with the player or with his actions and in general it's not very convincing , the physics of the water is identical to that of Skyrim and is truly unwatchable, the environmental destructibility is non-existent and the effects are old
    the ai, the enemies are not very reactive and are rarely a real threat and the companions sabotage you by only annoying you,
    shooting in a city will have no repercussions, no one will wonder what is happening and the police will stay still, but if you steal a bowl they will come and give you a fine,
    the shooting does its job, it's a step forward compared to the fallout,
    melee combat, on the other hand, is not satisfying and the spongy nature of the enemies is felt too much
    exploration, perhaps the most controversial thing in the game, the planets are separated by a loading, many are procedurally generated, others are not, the problem is that you find yourself changing planets too often, you spend more time in the menus than in the planets, and even the main planets, in addition to the cities, are essentially plains with some plants and animals but without anything truly unique, at most a few outposts which however reuse the same 2 assets in an almost ridiculous way, space exploration is useless and not very stimulating, you hardly find yourself exploring space and this also makes the creation of the ship superfluous, the game is a continuous rapid journey and loading between one city and another, even small things such as loading to enter internal areas are obsolete today,
    longevity, the strong point of the game, hundreds of planets, quests and a lot of things to do, the problem with Starfield is that it does a lot of things but doesn't do anything really well, I don't see how this game is next gen and I don't understand how Todd Howard can say this game is well optimized on pc, you need a 2080ti to play the game at stable 60 FPS at 1080p, it's ridicolous how such a old game need such a hardware, and the graphics option are terrible, no texture quality, no gamma, no FPS lock, this game is honestly disappointing in almost every way

    I wanted to like this game, but after 20 hours, I'm just bored. It's not "bad", it's dull. As cold and lifeless as space itself.
    A lot of people say "it gets better 12 hours in", and not only should that justify suffering through 12 hours of slow-paced, repetitive gameplay, it's also not true.

    A lot of people say "it gets better 12 hours in", and not only should that justify suffering through 12 hours of slow-paced, repetitive gameplay, it's also not true.

    Starfield sorely lacks that "oh **** moment, like fighting dragons in Skyrim, or Fallout 4's opening mission where you jump off a building in power armour and fight a Deathclaw. All there is so far is repetitive fetch quests, exploring the same handful of locations, and dull NPCs that drone on for far too long.

    It starts really slow. 10 minutes of walking through a mine, touching an "Artifact" (yes, that's all they're called, no originality here) to get a 2001: A Space Odyssey-style vision, then you make your character. After that, you fight some pirates, get given a ship, go through a decent ship tutorial, then you're introduced to the core gameplay loop - land on a planet, scan some rocks, plants, and wildlife, find a crater, abandoned mine, or outpost, kill some human enemies (it is ALWAYS the same human enemies btw), loot what you can with your paltry carry weight limit, and repeat.

    The gunplay hasn't changed since Fallout 4, and it doesn't have something like VATS to mitigate the clunkiness. Space flight is underwhelming - it's a glorified combat arena, if that. Fast travel is mandatory. Exploration is incredibly dull - once you've seen one abandoned mine, you've quite literally seen them all, both inside and out. Remember those random planets in the first Mass Effect that were squares of terrain with a handful of points of interest dotted about? That's planets in Starfield, only you have to walk for several minutes to get anywhere. I'd kill for a vehicle to cut out the monotony.

    I've done a fair amount of the main quest, got my hands on some of the powers, which are similar to Skyrim's shouts, only you can't organically find them out in the world like you could in Skyrim - you have to find an artifact, talk to someone, get sent off to a random planet, THEN you can find the power. That whole process is just walking from one place to another, by the way. No epic boss fights or anything like that.

    Enemy variety is laughable. In 20+ hours I've fought precisely 3 enemy types on the ground - humans (the most common), and 2 types of robot. Enemy AI is a joke - they'll stand there and let you empty your clip into them before reacting, or better yet, they'll run away. They love running away. There is alien wildlife, but you have to instigate the fight, and they're basically the equivalent of mole rats or brahmin from Fallout in terms of actually fighting them. Pretty bland, and space combat's not much better - once you've done the tutorial fight, you've seen everything space combat has to offer.

    The UI is atrocious. Navigating menus shouldn't be this slow and clunky. I shouldn't have to cycle between three inventories (trader's, mine, and my ship's) to buy and sell - especially when it was all on one screen in Bethesda's previous games. There are no actual maps, making navigation frustrating. Why can't I eat a food item instead of picking it up first when Fallout 76 let you do it? You know something's wrong when Fallout 76 has better quality of life features...

    But the questing's good, right? Wrong. I'm currently on the 7th quest for a faction. They have all been fetch quests where I've had to go to another building or planet, walk up to a crate or desk or computer, press a button, and that's it. This faction is supposed to be all about corporate espionage, and Bethesda managed to make even that boring as hell. The most interesting quest for this faction was the first one where I had to ORDER COFFEE. Why was it interesting? Because someone tried to kill me. I shot him once and that was it. The rest have involved no interaction with other NPCs at all. This is in Neon, by the way - the cyberpunk-looking city - and it genuinely feels like I'm playing a really ****ty version of Cyberpunk 2077. That would make Akila a ****ty Fallout, I guess...

    I can't help but feel like I'm playing a different game to everyone else, because so many people claim to be having a blast with this game. I don't understand what they're finding so fun about it. I'm just bored. I'd rather go back to Skyrim or Fallout 4.

    Oh, and it's crashed 11 times for me, so far. And don't believe the lie that is "it's Bethesda's least-buggy game". It's second only to Fallout 76 in how buggy it is. There's a bug that stops the main quest progressing, for crying out loud!

    The only positive is that the ship builder, despite being clunky, is really good. Shame you can't do much with the ships.

    Like I said, I wanted to enjoy Starfield. It just doesn't want me to enjoy it. I genuinely wonder if I'm playing a different game to everyone else who claims to be loving it. I want to play whatever version of Starfield they're playing.

    Unfinished and unoptimized Game. Sci-Fi aspects of the game are a joke. Performance is a joke. But the biggest joke of all is the blatant unoptimization of everything. But whatever we select, barely provides any difference and we are flooded with new status outcomes and have only one way – accept the offer to fly to our "new friends".

    Then all these loading screens: it's flow, it got broken every minute or two. Space lives in a different world, land lives in another, quests are mostly unrelated to anything and battles are there mostly to grind some resources (because weapons don't have any impact on enemies, except damage numbers).

    And visually it's somehow not as good as games from the 2014-2016 era, even huge open-world games all with better reflections, proper lighting, better skin and hair shaders, and consistent color balance (instead of washed-out blacks and overlit whites).

    And I don't blame Creation Engine, the interiors, and dark areas are exceptionally good-looking. They could at least achieve some proper color correction for SDR and HDR, and as you may've seen in Atlantis, they washed out the image instead.

    Combine it with 40FPS in big cities (on RTX 3000 with FSR!) and you'll understand what feels off for many players here. Several folks saying it's GOTY are probably been in cryostasis for the last 15-20 years.

    So Starfield, frankly I did not have particularly big expectations but even I got disappointed.

    While the production design and ground combat is fine ( the former I quite like, the later being an improved version of Fallout 4), everything else in the game feels dated, clunky or really barebones.

    To star off, the cities in Starfield don't really feel lived in. Whatever cities in Skyrim or Fallout were, they were believable. What BGS did is simply transport that system into the future and it doesn't really feel it fits. You sell most of the loot on a automated kiosk. Stores are far apart and difficult to find, combined with the fact there is no proper map of the cities. New Atlantis in particular feels like a weird sci fi set rather than an actual city. Akilla city on the other hand seem like a proper Fallout settlement that isn't made out of crap.

    Anyway, the big ad for the game was exploration. Honestly, all the exploration in Starfield is just a worse version of NMS. You run around a quite big map on which 99% looks exactly the same field with the same assets. It is fine the first couple of times, but after you do it twice, it is the exact same thing over and over. It is fine for a tertiary side activity but it cannot be considered anything significant in the main game.

    Biggest gripe is the bare bones of the whole space component. It is one big fast travel system disguised with animation sequence loading screens. In fact, you don't have to see space at all (apart from a few quests). You can simply fast travel everywhere. Space combat is pretty bland. Weapons are very similar apart from flavour text. Ballistics are exactly the same as lasers, except they do more hull instead of shield damage. There is no ammo, ballistic and missile systems rely on reactor power. Essentially everything is just a different type of lasers.

    Ship customization is cool, but once you play around with it, apart from making cool ships, it is actually quite simplistic mechanically. Wide, but quite shallow. Combined with not having any actual space flight (apart from an instance next to the planets), and the whole thing feels like Mass Effect, except characters, dialogues and cut scenes were miles better in that 15 years old game.

    Most of the activities in game are locked behind a skill, which means that you can't really have (until really late game) interesting custom ships, big outposts and/or custom weapons/armor. You can't customize your weapons at all until you put a skill point in it, even basic mods are behind the skill wall.

    The dialogues system/presentation is back to 2011 Skyrim style. Dead on, flat angle head talking to you. Quest are not particularly interesting and from what I've seen in my 25hrs, no particularly creative or with numerous possible outcome, although I am sure there will be some like it. Main quest is pretty bland, as usual for BGS, as are the characters with a few exception which only shine because everyone else is so much worse. Frankly, the robot Vasco is one of the better ones.

    A lot more can be said, but frankly, the game is 'just' an iteration of Fallout4. And in 2023 it feels dated and clunky, but I expected BGS would have improved over time. Alas, they have not.

    The game also suffers from myriad of tech issues. From poor performance to bugs, it is all there. Not as bad as previous BGS releases, but still unacceptably bad.

    If it had no glaring tech issues and bugs, the game is a good 7, may even reach 7.5 with DLC and mods (that will try to fix horrible designs). With its deceiving marketing and overall bland and shallow gameplay, I give it 6/10 .

    An ok game and huge wasted opportunity to make a game to last years.

    Free advice, wait a few years and buy the complete edition with all DLCs after 2-3 years.

Weirdly enough, many people like to say that this is a Bethesda game, but what this actually translates to is a game that never evolved past 2011, a game that is a quarter-mile wide and an inch deep.

    It has one of the most boring storylines I've ever played, with many characters having almost no personality, to the point where it feels forced rather than a well-designed story.

    There's very minimal exploration with an abundance of loading screens, something you would expect from a 2013 game, not a 2023 game. The exploration, if you can call it that, involves running from point of interest to point of interest, with a nearly barren planet on 90% of every planet you come across. To add to this, the points of interest are all copy-paste, with very little variety.

    The ship building is arguably one of the most talked-about aspects of the game, but unfortunately, the ship building serves no purpose, as there's no exploration beyond going from loading screen to loading screen.

    The gunplay is by far the best part of Starfield, but unfortunately, even its best part is average for 2023 standards. They managed to program basic gunplay into the game, which is nice, but beyond that, it's just nice gunplay with a very procedurally generated loop system and very lackluster AI.

    In conclusion, my review stands: if you're interested in playing Skyrim made 10 years later with very few improvements and essentially a space reskin, then Starfield is the game for you. On the other hand, if you value your money and want to play something more modern, I would highly advise against picking up this game, as it has nothing redeemable about it besides being a "Bethesda game."

    Such a meh game. Can’t even fly down to planets, so much for a space game where planets r just flat picture boxes. Zones on planets have boundaries so it’s not explorable. Just another tod Howard lies game.

    the construction of the ship gives vent to one's creativity, obviously with some limitations. to conclude, the game is excellent, there is nothing wrong with it except a few small bugs, but nothing that ruins the experience. the negative ratings come from people who probably haven't even tried the game and get carried away by the rumors. boycotting a game like this just because it's exclusive just makes them clowns.

    I've been gaming for about 25 years, but this is my first BGS game and I really didn't expect to love it as much as I do. There are some bugs and performance issues but they really don't detract from the experience in any major way. I can easily recommend this game to anyone, just make sure you set aside some time to really get lost in it.

    I cannot recommend this game right now, don’t waste your money on it @ full price.

    It baffles me how Bethesda can screw up this much, this could have been a GOTY.

    --> The bad

    Let’s start with the obvious: the game is full of bugs, not “Skyrim launch” level of bugs but a lot of bugs nevertheless. A game of this magnitude is expected to have them, but please don’t go on the media bragging about having “so few bugs”. They are common, they are everywhere, from visual bugs to quest bugs, even whole ship fleets missing that prevent you to move on with your quest (fixed after game restart).

    Second, the game has KOTOR (2003) space travel mechanics. With so many examples on the market (Elite Dangerous, NMS, etc.) it’s amazing how they couldn’t implement an in/out atmosphere landing. It’s just cut scenes all over the place: for landing, for docking, even riding the freaking metro. You cannot fly on the planet surface, you cannot fly into the planet, all you can do is a cut-scene here, a cut-scene there. Want to move around and explore the planet? Get ready to run marathons. No ground vehicles, no flying, just running - you’ll obviously end up just fast traveling everywhere. And the loadings… They are fast on NVME’s, but almost every door, everything you do is a freaking loading screen that cuts the immersion.

    Third, they screwed up big on the map, inventory & management. Moving items from your character to the companion requires about 5/6 actions, one of them being to open a dialogue with them. They did it right on Fallout and Skyrim, no excuses here. The map is a huge mess, I’m 30+ hours in and still doesn’t feel right, it’s not intuitive, it’s confusing, lacks consistency and the game has no minimap.

    Moving on, space combat is “ok”, a hugely simplified version of Elite Dangerous combat/ship maneuverability, still, more satisfying than the shooting mechanics on ground. Speaking of it, the weapons feel & effects are hugely unsatisfying. Nothing wrong with the weapons stats, types, etc., there is a lot of gun variety, they simply couldn’t do what (for example) Battlebit did, a game made by half-a-dozen friends where the weapons just feel amazing. NPC AI is a joke, the game feels way too easy on normal and the NPC intelligence doesn’t scale with it. Be ready to deal with bugged enemies aiming at the ground, hiding in plain sight or aliens running indefinitely into walls.

    The RPG side of it is Fallout 4 level of fail, you don’t have freedom to do anything out of the rulebook. Try to shoot shop people? Immortal. Try to shoot anything that’s not a pure enemy or random generated outpost, bullets don’t affect them. Dialogue options? Vague and weak. Persuasion mechanics are a mess, all feels superficial like a big roller-coaster ride.

    Last but not least, the performance. I can’t complain here because thankfully I have a really good setup, but folks that aren’t this fortunately will have a shock with the game lack of optimization. And it’s not like you’ll find the best graphics ever, not even close. The textures are outdated, the face animations too, the game doesn’t even stretch its legs to scale with GPU/CPU power. I’m running everything on ultra @ 1440p and the game only uses 5GB of VRAM, so much untapped power. Graphics aren’t that important, but it’s the cherry on the top of everything I just stated.

    --> The good

    The soundtrack is amazing, Interstellar meets 2001 Space Odyssey, a pleasure to listen to it on max volume.
    Awesome quest variety and factions.
    Game is stable, never had a single crash.
    The crafting / ship customization is awesome.
    The feel of the game overall is “ok”, I’m getting immersed in the story, but I just get kicked out of it every 5 minutes because of the things stated above.

    --> Conclusion

    Bethesda left the hard work to the modders. A 200+ million project, hundreds of people working on it, a veteran studio with all the funding they could have asked for, it’s like they f***ed up on purpose and I’m mad about it because Bethesda did a lot of my favorite games, ever, and I used to LOVE this company. So – many – rookie – mistakes.

    Personally, I think they were graphically held-back by the Xbox Series S, since it is a Xbox/PC exclusive they had to make it work on that damn calculator (and we can see the results). Also, the game is 100% a console port, there are no native PC mechanics, which aren’t that difficult to implement on a single-player game…

    The game is “ok” but could have been a masterpiece and it makes me mad because of the lost opportunity. Perhaps one day it will, when everything is just properly refined. Just wait for the price to drop, wait for the patches to fix everything, wait for the godsend modders to do their magic.

    Get a grip, Todd

    You know, thinking about it… take a couple things away and this game’s core gameplay loop would be possible in the 90s. So, GOTY 1999.

    Terribly animated faces kills any entertainment from the dialogue, and inspires a feeling of loneliness.
    Horrible enemy AI makes combat stupidly easy, I mean… I’ve actually found myself laughing during some of the combat sequences, perhaps some of the fans of the game will explain it as a planet specific thing where a lack of oxygen is causing the enemies to act more irregularly?

    Basically, the core problem for me is the gameplay loop. It literally feels like a point and click adventure (hence 1999 GOTY). Loading screen, click, loading screen, click, loading screen, maybe walk a little (ooooo! exciting!) oh… loading screen, click, loading screen, walk, dialogue… with ‘tired faces’

    Two things I have enjoyed however, the persuasion system is quite interesting - though I feel the dialogue options don’t really stack well. There could have been more work put in to make the persuasion conversation flow better.

    And the music is good, love the jingle when you level up. But first time I did level up, during combat, I found myself almost embarrassed by the jingle’s attempt to inspire excitement, considering how much I was cringing already.

    Concluding, the game is definitely not worth full price, considering what amazing developments in RPGs we’ve seen in 2023. But as part of the Xbox game pass, give it a shot.

There are some good moments with the excellent sound and music but i just don't want to launch this game anymore...Another game overestimated by mainstream media...

    Putting aside the glaring wokeness of having preferred pronouns, the vast majority of humanity being multiracial for some reason, with white people, and especially white men, being extremely rare, and most positions of power being held by women, the game has other issues as well.

    Such as the AI lacking the I, the character models being super ugly, reminding of Oblivion, the game being a chain of loading screens as the universe is not actually open, it's just a huge amount of cells, each with their own loading screen.

    But above all, the game is just...BORING! It's not Skyrim in space, it's Fallout 4 in space, except that unlike Fallout 4, it doesn't even have a popular franchise to stand on.

    Wokeness is always ignored by the players if the game is good. Hell, Baldur's Gate 3 is pretty woke and no one cares because the game is so damn good. But Starfield is not a good game, it's a mediocre game at best, so of course the wokeness sticks out like a sore thumb.

    It's...a game. It's nothing memorable nor interesting, it's a soulless corporate product made to squeeze money out of the sheep.
    And if anyone thinks it's a contender for the GOTY award, then they're just pathologically delusional.

    Haters aren’t even getting the facts right. This is a worse release than 2077 because at least 2077 had a perfect 3D engine? Come on, 2077 did not even have collision physics on vehicles when it first came out. Starfield, for Todd’s completely blown up ambition, even made very realistic physics for spaceships’ space travels - then the game does not use it at all, because it used jumps + loading screens all the time.

    As for graphics, Bethesda clearly has a management problem. The game is obviously broken down into different sections and some workers made very low res assets and scenes, while others made absolutely beautiful places. This problem is everywhere in this game. Some aspects of the game are top-notch, even groundbreaking, but others, like optimization for PC, are completely messed up.

    The main problem about Starfield is that Bethesda tried to make more than one game. Starfield is two or three games put in one, therefore the scope blew up. It’s a RPG plus space exploration plus base building. Deep down the reason why Todd Howard tried to put three games into one, I think, is that he envisioned an “ultimate space sandbox”, like how he said TES6 would be the ultimate fantasy world sandbox. He wanted to build a vivid world of his imaginary early space colonization era. Then that’s the problem - people’s lives in such an era will be extremely diversified. There is no way one game from 2023 can encompass them all. At least there will be some people living the settlements/cities, some people to settle on new stars, and some people to explore new stars.

    Hence the game had the exact same three main gameplay styles: RPG (cities and faction quests + “open world” exploration in cities), base building and space exploration. Bethesda could only bring the RPG part to near-perfection.

    Bethesda continue to pursue their own engine in favour of significantly more advanced game engines that next gen games are being developed on.

    Graphics animations should not be prioritised over gameplay, gameplay is by far the most important quality in any game. But, the gameplay in starfield is slow, the combat is subpar compared to most modern FPS games, and the story line is lacking any depth or intrigue.

    Add to this the anti-competitive Xbox exclusiveness that Todd Howard tried to excuse by saying it allowed them to be hyper focused on a single platform. Which in reality is complete rubbish, this wasn't a game design choice, this was purely an anti-competitive commercial choice by Xbox executives that wanted to try and increase their market share.

I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

    In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
