This game is exactly what I expected from Bethesda, it's expansive, detailed and has endless dynamics to explore as you would expect from an RPG.

Having said that the UX to move around planets and systems could potentially be more intuitive / easier to use which is probably one of the things that annoys me the most.

    Great game overall!

Looks great, music fantastic, so far no bugs, love adding mods to make it even better, runs fantastic in my pc at max/ultra settings, high frame rate up to 144fps at some scenes, lowest 95fps. Well done Bethesda!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Currently, I am 40 hours in and completed maybe 5 main quests. I am on my way to becoming a Freestar Ranger. The game sucks you in, just like any other Bethesda game. It is very good at distracting you, especially when you avoid fast traveling.
This part of the game is a 9!
The things Starfield does really well are the Quests, the world building - every city is different and feels like a small world, the ship and outpost building, and the companions are so much better than in Fallout 4 and I actually care about them, Space combat is super fun as soon as you level your ship.

    This part is a 5!
But there are things that definitely need to be better. The maps are horrible, the UI is bad, and the optimization for lower-end PCs is bad. I am not affected by that, but I empathise with the players affected. They should use a different engine for their games.

Another thing I have to address are claims and criticisms about the game, that are not really honest.

    1. The planets are lifeless and boring: Yes, that was intended and said the whole time. Howard said a year ago on Lex Friedman, that most planets will be lifeless, just like in real life.

    2. The life on the planets is always the same: That is just not true. I am 40 hours in and yet have not seen animals double.

    3. Space travel is not seeming less, NMS already did this nearly ten years ago, so why can't they do it?:
First of all. That, also, was clear a long time ago. Every player who read a bit about Starfield knew, that you can't manually land in Starfield. Now the travel between planets is so big, that it would take days to travel manually. That is pretty realistic, but nobody would do that, and it shows how absurd this point is.

Now to the point of comparing it to NMS:
Pretty easy, NMS does not have a lot of story, objects, in general, handcrafted content the player can interact with. The planets are pretty impressively generated procedurally. But as a long-time NMS player, the planets in NMS have no biomes, not a lot of diversity, and are mostly also pretty empty. Starfield has much more to focus on than the planet generation, which is still pretty good. The planets look amazing and the systems they are in also.

The criticism confuses me sometimes. The game gets criticized for being not realistic enough and it is not the real world just different boxes xyz, but when it does something realistic, like empty planets or huge space in actual space, then it's boring.

So all in all. I really like the game. It has major flaws I pointed out that should be fixed. But then again, Bethesda is the only one who does games this big and this good. Starfield will be a 100+ hour game for me and for you if you like Bethesda games.

    1. The game was never marketed as a Star Citizen-like (or "scam citizen," given the recent controversies). Bethesda has denied this information many times (hello, defamation).

    1. The game was never marketed as a Star Citizen-like (or "scam citizen," given the recent controversies). Bethesda has denied this information many times (hello, defamation).
    2. Bethesda never claimed that spaceship combat would be like Elite Dangerous (another fantasy of pseudo-fans) (P.S.: ED is also struggling, and I say that as someone with thousands of hours in the game and an FC with enough credits to last 3 years without logging in :D).
    3. Comparing Baldur's Gate 3 to Starfield is quite "mad." BG3 is a true role-playing game with card, whereas games like The Elder Scrolls, etc., are not role-playing games in the true sense.
    4. Criticizing the cities is acceptable depending on how you play. However, comparing it to Ubisoft, where the cities are ultimately very simplistic (lots of copy-pasting, etc.), well, that argument is only somewhat valid.
    5. Bad graphics? We must not have played the same game. You claim to be playing on ultra settings and know how to run the game on full ultra? I'm curious about your PC specs because few people can run it properly on full ULTRA.
    6. As for piloting, I would like to point out that there are some tricks, similar to ED, for quickly maneuvering your ship up and down, etc. But if you don't know them, you can't really compare it to Elite Dangerous because you probably haven't done Thargoid combat, PvP, bounty hunting, etc., at all.
    7. Regarding companions, they wear a default suit in HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS, just as you can hide your suit in your inventory in breathable/non-hostile environments. (I get the impression that you haven't actually played the game).
    8. As for your claim of being a "hiker," even though we can't verify this information, and it's an argument from authority, ALL Bethesda games were like this, without a map, even TESO. Does that make them bad games? No. Does your complaint potentially reveal a dependency? Yes.
    9. Resources and skills are a non-issue.
9a. Resources: You can easily buy them without any problem.
9b. Skills: In Elite Dangerous (since you like this example), you couldn't directly pilot a Federal Corvette and have it from the start, so ED is also a bad game. It's consistent not to have access to everything right from the beginning.
9c. Modding weapons/suits: You do research to unlock new crafting methods, etc.
9d. Ships: Do you need resources to build your ship? No, only credits, which are quickly earned (another proof that you haven't really played the game).
9e. Outposts: Allow you to automate resource farming, saving you some credits, and are very user-friendly.
    10. Regarding the quests, they have a very interesting background. If we listen to you, three-quarters of the games have terrible missions ^^' (your bias is showing).
    11. Unfortunately, your bias is quite evident.
    12. They never claimed that the game would resemble No Man's Sky, etc. They have denied this many times.

    Stop acting like Peter Molyneux.

I only played about 2 mainquests but have been enjoying the the faction quests a lot and you get good rewards for completing them. The gripes with this game are minimal to me, i kinda dont like the fast traveling but i also dont want to sit in a ship for hours traveling to complete a quest. The game runs well on my series S, barely any frame drops, i crash occasionally but im sure a uodate will fix it. The soundtrack to this game is amazing also. I recommend a playthrough if you like looter shooters and 1st person RPG games. Also they should update the AI and some of the physics as they are kinda stale but either way the game is still pretty fun for me.

One more thing. the overwhelming amount of negative reviews confuses the hell out of me. it seems like people went in expecting a completely different game from the one that was announced and promised. if they wanted what No mans sky offered they should play that one. or star citizen. this is a single-player Bethesda game.

The things I will say that are unfortunate about the game is alottt of loading screens but thier super fast so that's a plus, the barren plantes are little boring at times and the structures you find on them need to be more diverse since you get alot of the same types. Beautiful graphics, very good gameplay including shooting mechanics: weapons details are very nice, I loved the digital counters, the scenarios color pallets can be weird for some.

The first planet won´t be breathtaking but it shows the potential of the engine chosen for the game.

The spaceship first encounter is ok for people that played StarWars games but nothing new or revolutionary but it does its job.

Music and effects are very good, you clearly see their investment in that area, but that the other ones does not have it, but that(using headphones) just shines since the very start of the game.

This is a game that, if you want to enjoy its full potential and the view of its creators, you need to take your time into it. It is a RPG, not a shooter, even though it has its elements, but it keeps following the Bethesda RPG formula.

In short, take your time to play it, enjoy, do not rush, chat a lot with the NPCS, confront some pirates and other evil or not characters(depending of your choices you can be the enemy!) and explore and discover other life forms and, if you have the time, build your own base and customize your ship.

    Over and out.

With no level cap you can do anything you want in the game because you can unlock every perk on the same character which is one best choices bethesda made in my opinion.
I am planning to 100% this game, this includes 100% surveying every planet, unlocking all perks and completing every single mission.

The exclusion of ground vehicles can be a hindrance sometimes, however a fully upgraded boostpack (perk) really helps in traversing great lengths, even when overencumbered.
Would i like to see certain ground vehicles? Yes.

With my new setup even loading screens only take a second, this game runs perfectly.
Crashes never happen and i play between 5-10 hours non stop.

Only thing im missing that i do see in alot of different space rpgs is the intelligent alien lifeforms, whom have their own civilization, technology etc.
However i do believe the first DLC to contain those based on the name.

There are flaws, the performance of the game on some PCs is astoundingly bad, and in many ways unacceptable. But when experiencing the game for what it is, it shines through. The quest lines are excellent and exciting, the cities are fun and content rich, feeling more alive and vibrant than cities in past Bethesda games. The ship customization is nearly limitless (to its detriment in some ways.)

A majority of the criticism floating around is about either performance (which is acceptable, why rate a game well if it’s unplayable) or about very minor complaints that have no impact on the overall experience. If you enjoy Bethesda’s open world sandbox style of RPG, you will enjoy this one quite a lot. At the end of the day, Bethesda games are what they are. No matter what lies Todd Howard tries to sell you about the formula evolving, you know what you are getting into, and the only way you won’t enjoy this is if you have lofty and unrealistic expectations because of the marketing strategy. The game for what it is, is excellent.

It's certainly not a game for everyone, but it's worth thinking about why the user ratings here are so different from the reviews on Steam. It's because there you need to play for a certain amount of time to be able to evaluate it, while here the rating is dragged down both by hate and by players who barely gave the game a chance. So I decide to check it by myself and guess what, the game was gloriuous in most ways, people associate exploration with infinites worlds (most empty), in this case u can explore, live in the way u want, choose ur type of gameplay and take ur own decisions, every interaction surprise you in a way that only a experienced gamer can realize, but not everything it's perfect, u find a lot of bugs and errors that can affect the immersion, the game its optimized but they are losing some ways to make it better. Conclusion: If you wanna know the truth about this game, give it a try, don't follow tendencies just to be cool, get it on your gamepass or console, and if u play on pc take a look on the requirements!!! The gameplay is fun, the quests feel like they have a purpose, even the obligatory delivery quests. The combat is fast-paced and action-packed. If you like a huge open RPG game and you're tired of post-apocalyptic or medieval fantasy types and are more into the sci-fi genre, you'll probably really like this game. Customization of the ship is a huge plus and you can spend hours just doing that. The first few hours the game are difficult because of its scale and vastness, where most games have you on a very specific track that eventually starts to broaden out after the first mission this game throws you into a situation where you can do whatever you want and deciding is hard. Do I stick with the main storyline? Do I take my ship out for a spin and see what's out there? Do I join the plethora of factions? If it weren't for some of the videos I would have been lost. The cons of the game are more about some of its mechanics. They're definitely not deal breakers at least for me but you can't help but feel a little bit deceived with the marketing. Navigating between wherever you are, your ship, other planets and even towns is not a straightforward as you would think. Plus there are loading screens were in previews and trailers you never saw them so it was a bit of a surprise to see that there are a lot of loading screens to transition you from one point to another. Again this is not a deal breaker just was not expected and I've pretty much adapted to it though it would have been nice to have more seamless transitions I chalk this up to more of technical challenges of making a game of this scale. Visuals though very impressive in a lot of ways, still have areas where it feels a little last generation. It's a very mixed bag but overall the quality and scale and look is quite impressive especially materials for clothing the ships and the overall detail of interiors while external details planets, forest areas or other outside graphics such as walking through a city range from looking a little sparse to exceptionally detailed. It's not fair to compare it to something like cyberpunk for multiple reasons though those comparisons will pop into your head. They are two very different types of games and cyberpunk bill exquisitely detailed is still just one very large city and not a thousand planets and I couldn't even imagine trying to get that level of detail on a scale this large it probably would have taken even longer by a few years and technology to catch up to implement that sort of scale. And this is coming from somebody who works both in the gaming and film animation CG industry. All in all I'm very pleased with it and it is sucked way more time out of my day since I got it than I thought it would and I'm almost afraid of how much time it's going to put in but I know I'm going to enjoy it as I've enjoyed the first hours of playing once I got past the what am I doing where should I go. Again I can't stress enough looking at a few videos for things I wish I had known and a general breakdown because the tutorials are not that intuitive and they definitely don't deep dive. You have the feeling that you've been put into the Olympics and someone tossed you in the water expecting you to compete without telling you how to swim. Last but not least I'm playing on both my Xbox series x and on a very very powerful PC. The lack of DLSS included is preposterous but at least some very ambitious modders have put them up so that you can utilize them. The game plays very well on the series x and you don't notice the much debated 30 frames per second because of how consistently smooth it is and the type of game it is. Visually The game of course will look better on a PC depending on your hardware setup and your resolution. I'm running it on an overclocked 3090 TI RTX and I'm enjoying it. Much sharper and detailed but you will either need the DLSS mod depending on what your hardware is and what resolution you plan on using. For me personally running a 1080p with a higher pixel per inch on a color calibrated monitor running at 60 hz looks fantastic but I know that some people must have the 4K and for that you will have to use DLSS if you want some pretty significant and clean FPS. That's all, love the game and plan on spending countless hours in it Hope you enjoy! Expand

Most negative reviews will rant on about how this game does that better, leave them to their echochamber, enjoy the game, there is so much love and creativity in this game, so much detail and care put into every aspect, are there flaws? Oh yes, so many, far from a perfect release, but I'm 46 hours deep of playing nothing but starfield and I can say I love every inch of this game, the story, the world, the guns, it's all so immersive.

This game is a slow burn, but it rewards you for playing, 46 hours and I'm still finding new guns and armors to play with, new factions to converse with, i even improved the aspect I hated the most, the ship combat, by experimenting and building my very own giant disk of doom.

It's not perfect, not even close, but it's not the nightmare people say, try it, if you don't like it, then it's not your cup of tea, but those of us enjoying the stars are having the time of our lives.

The game is quite entertaining; the exploration is good with many activities to do, and the combat is a lot of fun. There are some things that could be improved, for example, I would prefer to have more control over the spaceship and make the journeys more manual and less fast travel, something like No Man's Sky.

Unconventional to the likes of previous titles like Skyrim and Fallout 3, there isn’t a famous “step out moment” but rather a slow crescendo into what ends up being one of the deepest narrative driven experiences I’ve had in years. In that way, Starfield feels almost a retro experience. The interactions and gameplay reminds me of Oblivion, the way persuasion checks work to the dialogue and story progression. Though the fast-travel between planets and locations seem kinda immersion-breaking sometimes, the universe is full of unique places, cities and biomes - so it's worth it every loading screen, which is like 3-5 seconds maximum, so I don't know why people are complaining so much.

It's also fascinating to land on a random planet or moon and see what's out there. Every time you make a landing, the zone is rather huge - no point to travel over 1000m when most planets are pretty much desolate. There's usually four or so landmarks or destinations every time you land, giving you plenty of things to explore while you spend time scanning the environment for plant and animal life, as well as resources for your outpost.

I'd say it's definitely one of Bethesda's best, considering their sordid past of bug-ridden release. Though, they could use some QoL and just a little bug fixing after the initial release. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you have Gamepass and if you're on the fence, maybe wait for a couple patches or a sale to buy - unless you're as excited as I was to play.

    5. Companions are useless for helping you in a fight, The only use is to romance, and carry your cargo, I gave Sarah my best weapon (Minigun) (with ammo) and she does not kill anybody, I kill everybody....
    6. I got Stuck at Dialog, Sarah talks to me about barret paying for repairs and wake, and never says anything after first dialog. And everytime I'm in the ship she automatically starts dialog, and get me stuck, So i had to disable her.

I belive this game will only get better with age (mods/patches/expansions), and if you are on the verge, it might be better to wait until bugs are fixed, and more and even better mods and dlc is out. It is a good game in it's own right, but I was expecting more tbh.

The main complaint I have is with the writing. While the overall story is compelling enough, and some of the side-missions are very nearly brilliant, dialogue can be clunky or even cringe-worthy, perhaps most especially with companions who are part of Constellation. They're all so . . . bland and nice, and are prone to gush awkwardly over how awesome it is to be with the main character.

(Perhaps they took inspiration from the Adoring Fan?)

    I would rate Starfield 8/10.

Not a masterpiece, but still a pretty fun game with a lot to do and see. Optimization definitely needs a bit of work but the story and gunplay makes up for it in spades. It's not gonna be for everyone, but if you're a fan of Bethesda games, you owe it to yourself to at least give Starfield a shot.

This game is divisive as I thought it would be, but the amount of "0" scores I see reflect how narrow minded and shallow people are. At first the game can be confusing, with the various menys and interfaces but it takes time to get used to it and i recommend everyone to have patience with this game and give it a chance. It looks beautiful, runs smoothly and is absolutely VAST in size.
I end up giving it a fairly high rating after playing for several days, the intro is quite boring tho so get past that

Bethesda has taken everything they have learned from their previous RPG's and refined it in Starfield. The level of Role-Play available is great. The sheer amount of quests and things to find is great. Planet exploration could have been handled better. Maybe cut the number of planets to add more unique things to those remaining planets? I know they are going for a more "realistic" depiction of space. Which in fact has mostly barren rock/ice planets. But I recognize it can be tedious. Starfield has the best gunplay of any Bethesda game. All these assumptions that some people had the game would be. Has no one learned from Cyberpunk? Excepting too much from a game will always end in disappointment. Can we pull back, take a breath, and be fair to the game? Expand

During my 100 hours of playtime, I only found 4 minor bugs. The typical Bethesda jank is still present, such as NPCs walking in your face during a dialogue scene. The gunplay is by far Bethesda's best. Although the loading screens are common, they only take 1-2 seconds, so they are not a big issue. Furthermore, not being able to fly down to the surface of a planet is not a significant drawback because you would get nothing from it - I say this as someone who has put over 150 hours in No Man's Sky and about 30 hours in Star Citizen.

The exploration in Starfield is quite unique compared to other Bethesda games. It's hard to explain, but the game's exploration is more vertical than horizontal. You will either love it or hate it. Unlike other Bethesda games, where you might see something in the distance and go to it, in Starfield, it's different. I enjoyed the main story more than any past Bethesda game, and I've played everything from Morrowind to Fallout 4. Starfield is more of an RPG than Fallout 4, but less of an RPG than Morrowind or Baulders Gate 3.

TLDR: It's a good game if you like Bethesda RPGs and space, have a good PC, and are willing to pay $70 for a game. But it's not GOTY or as good of an RPG as Baulders Gate 3.

It took me well over 10hrs to get my bearings and figure things out before I actually started enjoying the game. But once I did I can't put the game down now. It's a ridiculously big game with what might be an infinite replayability. There are a few gripes, crafting is kinda meh. And there are so many items you need for it with very rudimentary ways to track those items. It makes it difficult. In the end you have to just loot everything and fill up your very limited inventory and hope you got the correct items.

Of course there's normal Bethesda bugs. Nothing game breaking. Just a bit of weird physics and npc legs getting stuck in doors and stuff.

Runs over 60fps on high settings at 1440p on my 3070ti, and 50-60fps at ultra settings.

Bottom line, if you like Bethesda games then you'll like this one...after you play for a little while. So get in there, learn how the star map works, learn how to build a ship and you'll be having a blast in no time.

Up to try any genre of games and sometimes I find something new that I didn't think I'd like. I own a PC (built by me), Xbox, PlayStation and a Switch. I prefer PlayStation due to their focus on narrative games. For scoring, I’ll be using the GameInformer review scale and of course influenced by my personal opinions.

    (8) Very Good. Innovative, but perhaps not the right choice for everyone. This score indicates that there are many good things to be had, but arguably so.

Upon writing , I have 50 hours of play time on Steam and 15 hours on Xbox. During my first 20 hours of playing, I was not a happy camper. I was getting annoyed with the constant loading screens, and the constant walking on worlds that had repeated content in the procedurally generated worlds. For example I kept on seeing the same cave, mine, animals, plants, and/or, outpost setup that these knew planets I was visiting didn't seem very different from each other. I ended up not letting myself go to random planets and started to only follow the main mission and side missions and I started liking the game a lot more and wanted to keep going. The handcrafted parts of the game was a breath of fresh air to me and turned my initial worry about the game around. I enjoy the space flight but wish we could travel to other planets manually, I get not being able to enter planets without a cutscene but I was expecting to be able to fly in space more than just specific areas. You pretty much have to fast travel everywhere and it ruins the journey for me. Of course, I wouldn't want to manually go everywhere all the time but here and there I would. I haven't ran into any major bugs and the miner ones I did run into would just be enemies glitching into the ground slightly and the characters not looking at you in conversation. Basically, I'm enjoying the story and side stories but besides how many planets there are, the outpost building, and ship building, this game is on par with the Mass Effect Series and most of those games were from two generations ago that accomplished most of the same things. I don't think this game is a masterpiece but it's worth the time to play.

Here you can spend hours building your ship, hours crafting and arranging furniture in your home, hours mining resources and exploring planets, trading, transporting contraband, fighting on ships, stealing things, hiring companions, improving guns and spacesuits, cooking, helping random passersby, play your role and receive dissatisfaction or approval from others, complete quests in different ways. You can do literally anything!
I started the game late in the evening and it didn’t let me go until the morning, you really feel the atmosphere of space here, and the side quests are like small stories inside this world. After the first story quest, I came across some completely random additional quest and this line of quests told me the whole story of the conspiracy and took me 6-8 hours to complete it, and then it became more and more interesting to play. It was really fun, I don't understand why some people think the game is boring. It's definitely not a game for everyone, but it's a good, worthwhile game in the classic Bethesda style.
The game had every chance to become a hit and personally my favorite for many years, if not for one thing, the optimization here is truly terrible. The picture is nice and beautiful, but I would like to have 1080p 60 fps on my RTX 4060, and not ~30-45 :D I could only start playing comfortably at 60-80 frames with a DLSS mod. It’s very sad that the optimization was taken care of by enthusiasts and not by Bethesda.

Bethesda definitely added a lot on top of their previous product, as they do each time.

Bethesda definitely added a lot on top of their previous product, as they do each time. Character models, quests and the open world interaction are a lot more in depth than each previous title made, the vastness of randomly generated worlds really puts things in perspective and I can't imagine the mods that will come.

    Things that I liked:
    - Constellation: I loved the concept of a diverse group of people secluded from society, set to explore the deepest and farthest points in the systems. Feels like the best fit for the story.
    - Ship building: I've already spent hours trying out combinations, I'm sure mods will take this to the ROOF.
    - World depth, factions: I want to say that the world of Starfield feels a lot more immersive and in-depth than the previous games made by BGS. Factions have very characteristic and are fun to delve into.

What I took out points for is:
    - Lack of orbital cruise: there could really be some sort of cinematic loading screens while exiting or entering a planet's orbit, with ability to fly in it with our ship.
    - Lack of player control during landing and take-off: explains itself, wish we could manually land and take-off from anywhere we wanted.
    - Tedious walking: I get that distance and travel should be a thing in space to make it feel like it's space but we seriously don't need it on foot. Wish there were ground vehicles like offroad bikes or something.
    - Tedious navigation: I get that the user could not use fast travel but with the lack of a detailed flight model, the only interaction/gameplay in space is just fast traveling into a new system for a ship scan for 10 seconds before opening the map to select a place to land to. Why are the ships then? Wish we were forced to at least sit through the jumps for 10-15 seconds to give a sense of distance and travel.

There's tons of potential for plenty of mods when the Creation Kit will be available, I'm looking forward to them. It's definitely a bigger "level-up" from Fallout 4 than what Fallout 4 was after Skyrim but unrealistic expectations led to this hate wagon on here. It's definitely well above average of a game but what I criticized above definitely doesn't put this title in the GOTY category for me.

Although I have full faith in the modding community so, we'll see. I'll be having fun playing until then.

Bethesda's long awaited new universe is a polarizing marvel. It fails in places very important to some and insignificant to others.

The engine which powers Bethesda games provides many technical limitations, but it is also the source of Bethesda's immense ability to create living persistent worlds. Your enjoyment of Starfield is reliant on which you prioritize.

Unfortunately, those technical limitations, cracks in the experience, which in past titles were so easily airbrushed away, are now as wide and deep as canyons. They are glaring indictments of Bethesda's inability to move engines. Bethesda has so much time and effort invested in their jalopy of an engine it would mean a disastrous loss of productivity to switch at this point.

That being said, the design choices that hurt the most seem informed by technical limitation. I do not understand for the life of me why in-menu fast-travel is so prominent in a game centered around space ships. I understand the need to remove the void of travel to provide a tighter narrative experience, but space sims have had warp drives since the 80s, Starfield has warp (grav) drives. That, IS your fast travel system. Menu travel makes a universe of 100s of planets feel as small as Skyrim.

Bethesda's RPGs have historically had terrible menus so it stands to reason that the their games feel the best when you are out of them for long stretches. Unfortunately, Starfield is their most menu heavy game to date. Half the game is played in menus. I understand that releasing on consoles creates limitations, such as requiring annoying lists of equipment, but why, when playing on a keyboard, are the keys that have similar functions different depending on what I'm doing? Its an unintuitive and frustrating mess.

Starfield excels at many things. The scope of the content is massive. Its easy to b-line it through the main storyline and treat the other quests as "side-quests", but they are anything but. These are fully voice acted narratives that take you around the galaxy and feel like Starfield launched with built in DLC. The writing is rough in areas, but never outwrite bad and the characters are complex and deep.

Ship building is well implemented, not being too restrictive or complex, while still feeling like there is some engineering complexity to conquer. It would have been great if exotic ship part blueprints were found as loot or just more parts in general, but the feature is a highlight, regardless.

Combat is, what you would expect from an RPG shooter. Bullet sponge slogs or insignificant short scuffles. Rarely can they find the sweet spot. The savior here is the weapon design, which are both pleasing and interesting. The AI does an admirable job while in combat, but falls back on decades old design of AI "Amnesia". Stay hidden for long enough, and they will go about their day, like you didn't just murder half of them 30 seconds ago.

In many ways Bethesda RPGs are platforms on which to build your own experience; playing how you want, modding how you please, changing what you don't like, and adding more of that which you do. The promise of community improvements and content goes a long way with some, and means little to others.

Its easy to fault Starfield. The Bethesda formula and trademark Bethesda jank are getting stale. The limitation of the technology are on full display. The content is deep in odd places and shallow where it often counts the most. Starfield is the best Bethesda RPG since Morrowind, but games are in a different place. Bethesda's inability to grow in the right direction, means Starfield falls short of reaching the stars.

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
